Description: Results are provided for corrosion tests of steel specimens with coatings of different compositions, prepared by surfacing under the action of a laser beam. Data are provided for weight loss of specimens coated with highly alloyed corrosion-resistant and tool steels, tin bronze, and alloys based on nickel and cobalt. The pH of working solutions is 3.1–9.0. the nature of corrosion damage and specimen transverse section structure are described. Research shows that use of protective coatings based on steel and on nonferrous metals may considerably reduce breakdown of objects manufactured from structural steels. The most marked reduction in weight loss due to corrosion develops for a coating based on cobalt (up to 82 %). Alloys based on nickel and highly alloyed steels SS316L and SS410L showed an increase in corrosion resistance from 38 to 43 %. Description: Experimental data on radon entrapment in the adsorbers of the thorough-purification unit of the krypton– xenon mixture producing plant KhROM-3 are reported. The possibility of monitoring radon content in the atmospheric air in the region of operation of this plant is shown. The radon concentration at two facilities in Ukraine is found to differ significantly. Calculations show that it is possible to remove radon from the primary krypton concentrate (PKC) at the stage of its purification from the combustion products, which will allow one to enhance the effectiveness of radiation safety at the krypton–xenon mixture producing plant. The data derived can be applied to other plants of this type that have an adsorption purification unit. Description: During crevice corrosion of steel 12Kh18N10T, local activation may arise as a result of pitting formation close to the mouth of a crevice by the action of ion-activators or as a result of depassivation of individual areas (spotting) within the depth of a crevice due to acidification of crevice solution by hydrolysis products. Activation of steel within a crevice by a chloride pitting mechanisms is most probable at normal temperature in aerated solutions, and by a spotting depassivation mechanism at elevated temperature in deaerated solutions. Description: This paper reports the results of investigations of an adsorption cassette consisting of a compact capacious element with a developed adsorption layer in the form of a packet of eight layers of carbon cloth of the trademark KUT-M pressed between box-shaped perforated aluminum substrates. The evacuation parameters of the cassette are determined. It is found that the operating absorption capacity is 1.7–2 times higher than the adsorption capacity of the cassette determined under isothermal conditions. It is experimentally demonstrated that the adsorbent in the cassette is effectively protected by a cylindrical shield with one-way entry which cools the elements and a face disk-like shield. Description: Mass transfer from the volume of medium within a crevice and conversely is of considerable importance for crevice corrosion. A device is used based on a system of two horizontal coaxial disks, one of which (specimen with an annular crevice) is stationary, and the second (counter disk) rotates. This makes it possible to control hydrodynamic conditions around the stationary disk surface and evaluate quantitatively the rate of convective-diffusion mass transfer towards its surface. Data are obtained for the distribution of liquid flow rate over the depth of a crevice with a prescribed counter disk rotation frequency. It is shown that with an increase in crevice width the more critical value of cathodic process rate at a surface within a crevice remains constant, in spite of an increase in solution convective restoration intensity within a crevice. Under natural convection condition within the volume of solution oxygen distribution over the depth of a crevice is very uneven, and this may lead to occurrence of differential aeration pairs. With induced convection within solution around the mouth of a crevice, the cathodic process of oxygen renewal penetrates into the depth of a crevice and is distributed more uniformly over the surface within a crevice. Description: A method is proposed, and local thermal fluxes around the circumference of water-wall tubes in tube furnaces are analyzed. The method is based on the zonal approach to description of radiational and complex heat exchange and statistical modeling of radiation for the purpose of determining local generalized slopes. The method of calculation and results of analysis of the local heat-release rate of tubes in reaction furnaces with double-daylight one- and two-tier tube water walls assume scientific and practical significance for design of this type of equipment. Description: A solution is presented for the problem of thermoelasticity of a thick-wall hollow cylindrical structure fashioned from foam polyurethane with an outer layer of basalt plastic. A method is proposed for determination of the temperature field across the section, which is based on solution of a nonlinear heat-conduction equation. The influence exerted by temperature on the magnitude of the specific heat conduction and elastic modulus, which takes into account the material’s heterogeneity, is indicated. A partial-linearization scheme using Kirchhoff transforms is proposed on the basis of solution of a linear equation with variable coefficients, and a successive-approximation scheme based on the finite-element method is employed. Description: Today, a large number of direct-flow gate valves with a single slide plate are used in the petroleum industry, and, in particular, for oil and gas recovery. Moreover, the service life of well-head equipment in Russia may attain many tens of years. In this respect, modernization of these gate valves for the purpose of extending their service life and lengthen their inter-repair period is urgent. The tendency currently exists to broaden use of gate valves with a stationary spindle; however, the assigned running time to loss of serviceability of the sliding couple is not always realized. The following modernized gate valve has been designed: with an extensible spindle, and with no opposing rod; and, a special mechanical drive is developed. The gate valve developed permits a significant increase in running time to failure of the gate and packing gland; an appreciable reduction in the control force; and, retention of ease of use at the series-production level. Modernization of the gate valve makes it possible to extend the inter-repair interval and running time to failure, and reduce the control force. Description: Physicochemical and biological conversion in heterogeneous gas–liquid systems is used increasingly in different production processes. Dispersion in a gas–liquid system is used for creating various interphase surfaces, providing high intensity heat and mass transfer. Dispersion of gases in production equipment is accomplished by different types of dispersers (pneumatic, mechanical, etc.). In resolving the problem of creating material for effective gas dispersers, it is necessary to consider that as a rule these materials will be used at elevated temperature, in corrosive media, and also under conditions of the action of corrosive gases upon them. A material that today answers all these requirements is porous permeable ceramic. Results are presented in this article for creation of porous permeable ceramic material, its properties, technology for creating fine-bubble gas dispersers are studied, and these dispersers are tested in gas-liquid reactors in various branches of industry. Description: Theoretical mechanics methods are used to find reaction in bends of a pipeline due to the action of liquid flow centrifugal forces. The results obtained in special cases agree with results obtained both by a theorem for the change in amount of movement and sidelong elastic impact. In contrast to existing procedures, the method proposed makes it possible to find the point of application of resultant centrifugal forces in a pipeline bend, which it is necessary to know for correct placement of pipeline supports for the purpose of increasing its fatigue strength. Description: Results are presented for a computational analysis performed to determine the most favorable diameters of the high-temperature section of the flue pipe in crude heaters with an intermediate heat-transfer medium. It is demonstrated that economically suitable diameters for the flue pipe are limited by the minimum value for which the working expression was obtained in the study. It is also indicated that ring-vortex generators placed in the high-temperature section of the flue pipe for intensification of convective heat exchange are technically and economically expedient. Description: A concept of methodological recommendations for estimating service life for designing, fabricating, and appraising safety of industrial equipment is proposed. The degree of wear, which characterizes the change in safety (strength) margins of components, parts, and units (assemblies) in the process of their operation, is taken as the generalized parameter. The concept solves the problem of estimating the full, residual, calculated (permissible) service life of industrial equipment that does not have backup (standby) components. Description: A mathematical model is proposed for the cooling of a smooth extruded polymeric pipe; this model makes it possible to determine the temperature field of the pipe without use of the coefficient of heat transfer from its surface to the cooling water. Results of numerical modeling are obtained for limiting alternate schemes of convective cooling of the pipe in a water bath, when the water within the bath is stationary, and moving together with the pipe. The model makes it possible to determine the length of the cooling bath to achieve the required temperature distribution throughout the wall thickness of the pipe, or (for a bath of a certain length) calculate the temperature field over the wall thickness of the pipe where it emerges from the bath. Description: Under conditions precluding induced removal of corrosion products from local damage, the effect of movement of sodium chloride solution on pitting corrosion of stainless steel at 20–80°C is considered. In order to create controllable hydrodynamic conditions, a device is used based on a system of two disks, one of which (working specimen) is stationary, and rotation of the second disk provides solution movement. It is shown that with an increase in medium movement rate the occurrence of pitting is made more difficult. The greatest effect on a change in hydrodynamic conditions is observed in dilute solutions. The degree of the activating effect of temperature on pitting formation may be markedly different (especially in dilute chloride solutions) in relation to the temperature level of the system. Description: In high-temperature reactors fabricated from alloy steels with an austenitic facing, contact pressure develops when the wall of the cylindrical shell is heated above 200°C in the zone where the built-up layer abuts the base metal due to the difference in their coefficients of linear expansion. A procedure is proposed for analysis of the contact pressure and evaluation of the cyclic strength of the housing and facing with consideration of the internal pressure and pressure within the zone of contact. As an example, results are presented for an R-201 reactor in a plant used for hydrotreating fuels. Calculations indicated that the allowable number of cycles for the facing is an order lower than that for the housing of the reactor. Description: The pattern of the radial deformation of an annular component (gasket) is examined during its axial loading. It is demonstrated that as the gasket deforms axially, its outside radius increases, and its inside radius remains essentially constant. Working expressions are derived for determination of the neutral radius, the increase in the outside radius, and the change in the inside radius during axial deformation of the gasket. A device was built to verify the working relationships obtained, and experiments substantiating their practical applicability were conducted. It is recommended that information on tolerances for the diametrical dimensions of the gaskets and annular groves for their seating be incorporated in regulatory materials. Description: A new nondestructive monitoring method is considered, i.e., a metal magnetic memory method, based on measuring the self-magnetization leakage field (SMLF) at the surface of test equipment. The method makes it possible to obtain the stressed state without considering structural changes. The magnetic memory effect is applied to the working areas of applied maximum loads during testing. The metal magnetic memory method does not have disadvantages compared with other monitoring methods, and makes it possible to recognize elastic deformation, the determine the plane of metal layer sliding, and also the area of fatigue crack development. Considering labor expenditure, it is possible to say that the metal magnetic memory method belongs to rapid methods. The main aim of the method is determination of the most critical areas and equipment having stress concentration. Description: Results of hydrodynamic analysis of vessels with a dual-tier open turbine mixer and four baffle partitions are presented. The velocity distributions obtained in these vessels are in good agreement with qualitative patterns known in the literature. A relationship is proposed for determination of the power factor in these vessels as a function of the diameter of the mixers and the distance between them. The effect of the distances between mixers and their diameter on the dissipation rate of kinetic energy is indicated. Content Type Journal Article Pages 1-6 DOI 10.1007/s10556-012-9555-x Authors A. Description: An effective tube with a diameter of 25.6 mm possessed terminal sections of smaller diameters (16.8 and 21.4 mm). When a steady film flow is realized in the terminal sections, only nonsteady regimes are possible primarily in the basic median section (pulsed regime or nonsteady film). Pressure losses related to the pulsed regime are determined by computational means using the principle of additivity on the basis of measured values of total pressure losses in the variable-diameter tube. Description: The energy of interaction of particles with dissimilar wettability (quartz, coal, and pyrite) and air bubbles in neutral and alkaline media are analyzed on the basis of the extended DLVO theory to assess the floatability of these minerals. It is established that for hydrophilic materials such as quartz, the formation of particle-bubble complexes (at both the primary, and also secondary potential minima) is impossible owing to existence of a high potential barrier and weak force of attraction. For coal and pyrite, the pattern of the potential curves (energy of interaction versus distance between particle and bubble) will depend largely on the pH of the medium: an increase in this parameter will lead to manifestation of a potential barrier (when pH ≈ 7.8 for coal, and pH ≈ 9.8 for pyrite), and to an increase in its height. This causes unstable flotation of the coal and pyrite even for relatively small changes in the surface potential, pH, and ionic composition of the medium. An increase in the effectiveness of flotation benefication of coal and pyrite can be achieved by hydrophobization of the minerals by reagents-collectors: the wetting angle is increased from 50–80° to 90–100°. In turn, the potential barrier is eliminated, the effect of the pH of the medium is neutralized, and stable attachment of particles of the minerals under consideration to air bubbles is ensured in the region of the secondary potential minimum. Analysis of the forces of particle-bubble interaction made it possible to determine the forces of adhesion and detachment. Computed values of the forces in question for an air-bubble/hydrophobized-pyrite-particles system are comparable to experimental values of the indicated forces for a similar system. The content of petroleum products in the petroleum sludge amounted to 20% of the mass of the sludge, the catalyst content was 5% of the mass of the mixture, the process was carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere, and the temperature of the process was 500°C. During the course of the experiments, the masses of the solid, liquid, and gaseous products were determined, and the gaseous mixture of pyrolysis products was also subjected to qualitative and quantitative analysis. The gaseous products were analyzed using gas chromatography in accordance with a method outlined in an external standard. Description: Within the chemical industry, and also in some other branches, there is extensive use of sulfuric acid solutions of different concentration and corrosiveness, containing metal ions of varied valency (Cu 2+ , Fe 3+ , Ni 2+ , Cr 3+ , etc.), which appear in a medium, for example, as a result of equipment corrosion, etc. In sulfuric acid media, corrosion can be uniform or local, i.e., pitting, spot corrosion, intercrystalline corrosion (ICC). Whereas uniform corrosion develops as a gradual reduction in the thickness of an original vessel, equipment, and machine component elements, whose corrosion rate may be calculated previously from existing data for the corrosion resistance of structural materials in specific production media, it is almost impossible to predict ICC development, and therefore in many cases it leads to sudden structural breakdown. In order to predict corrosion, it is recommended to use for article manufacture corrosion-resistant steels and alloys with alloying providing in sulfuric acid solutions resistance to uniform and local corrosion with the required heat treatment and monitoring for ICC resistance. Description: A method based on determination of integral values of local pressure losses associated with potential flow velocity of a fluid in a smooth slot seal channel is proposed for calculating radial forces in slot seals in a case where the axes of the shaft and housing bushing of the seal assembly are eccentric. It differs from the well-known Lomakin calculation method based on differential calculation of local losses in terms of the flow rate of the fluid through the seal assembly. The proposed method can be used to simplify solution of the problem and to enhance the accuracy of calculations. Description: Correctly selected gasket width for forced-type detachable sealed joint is one of the conditions of leak-tightness of the joint under the operating conditions at minimal material content of the joint itself. In this article, the calculation of the initial gasket width has been made more precise taking account of the real nature of radial deformation of the gasket upon axial loading. The calculating expression obtained has been used to determine the initial appropriate width of the gasket. Experiments have been carried out to study the conditions of radial deformation of the gasket. The experimental and calculated results are virtually congruent. The data reported in this article help disclose the real nature of gasket deformation in flanged joint, which allows one to remove errors from the calculating expressions used, determine the allowance for reducing the material content without impairing the leak-tightness of the flanged joint and the strength of its constituent elements, and select a more optimal flanged joint design. Description: Kinetic features are studied for biocatalytic conversion of a mixture of plant material and organic waste of plant origin. It is established that free amino acid formation in the course of biocatalytic conversion is described with sufficient accuracy by equations of formal chemical kinetics, and growth of microbial population is described by a classical Mono equation. Analysis of results in the course of kinetic simulation makes it possible to draw a conclusion about the complexity and multiplicity of free amino acid formation mechanisms, and also to carry out a series of laboratory tests for biocatalytic conversion. Description: The effect of laminar movement and heat transfer on the occurrence and development of stainless steel pitting is studied, using a device based on a system of two disks, one of which (working heat transfer specimen) is stationary, and rotation of a second disk providing solution movement. It is shown that the effect of heat transfer between metal and solution on pitting formation depends on metal temperature and heat flux direction. With a metal temperature of 50 °C under heat transfer conditions from metal to solution with an increase in temperature drop pitting corrosion potential increases, and under conditions of heat transfer from solution to metal it decreases. Presence of a heat flux in any direction through a metal–solution phase boundary facilitates the development of pits, but makes their repassivation difficult, and thereby deepens corrosion. Description: Technology is considered for compaction of solid domestic waste into large blocks, excluding subsequent stitching and binding with wire, in order to avoid arbitrary breakage during lifting and transport operations. As a result of calculation and theoretical studies, and laboratory experiments for determining the dependence of side pressure coefficient, static and dynamic coefficients of external friction due to compaction pressure, and also calculation of limiting state parameters, it is shown that the stated aim is achieved with compaction of solid domestic waste with a conical punch. Model blocks are obtained by experiment that have adequate strength during shipment and disposal at a landfill site.
