Description: Data science can be messy, with data scientists often starting with poor-quality or inconsistent data that must be cleaned up before it can be utilized to an organization's best advantage. Here, the author discusses artificial intelligence—in particular machine learning-technologies and how they can help or hinder organizations in curating the vast amounts of data such organizations have access to.

Description: This column evaluates blockchain’s roles in strengthening security in the Internet of Things (IoT). Key underlying mechanisms related to the blockchain–IoT security nexus are covered. From a security standpoint, the article highlights how blockchain-based solutions could be, in many aspects, superior to the current IoT ecosystem, which relies mainly on centralized cloud servers. Using practical applications and real-world examples, the article argues that blockchain’s decentralized nature is likely to result in a low susceptibility to manipulation and forgery by malicious participants. Special consideration is given to how blockchain-based identity and access management systems can address some of the key challenges associated with IoT security. The column provides a detailed analysis and description of blockchain’s roles in tracking the sources of insecurity in supply chains related to IoT devices. Using blockchain, it is also possible to contain an IoT security breach in a targeted way after it is discovered. The column also discusses and evaluates initiatives of organizations, interorganizational networks, and industries on the frontlines of blockchain.

Description: Academic advisors assist students in academic, professional, and personal matters. Successful advising increases applicant yield and student retention, improves graduation rates, and helps students meet educational goals. This work presents a cognitive advising system that answers questions related to a university and its programs. This system uses IBM Watson’s cognitive intelligence to identify the question category and then answer the question accordingly. To implement the system, the authors created a four-step systems development process. Their approach will be used as part of a Cognitive Computing in Business course that exposes student teams with diverse skills and backgrounds to both developing and deploying cognitive systems.

Description: Considerable buzz surrounds artificial intelligence, and, indeed, AI is all around us. As with any software-based technology, it is also prone to vulnerabilities. Here, the author examines how we determine whether AI is sufficiently reliable to do its job and how much we should trust its outcomes.

Description: Wireless communication plays a vital role in the operations of modern rail transportation. The characteristics of rapid train motion make the wireless spectrum environment unstable, discontinuous, and unpredictable. These uncertainties, coupled with inherent spectrum scarcity, result in inefficiencies in wireless communication. Applying cognitive radio in railway wireless communication systems is a cutting-edge research field. Most rail cognitive radio studies focus only on solving spectrum scarcity. The authors’ improved rail cognitive radio model uses a Bayesian network with numerous channel contextual features to probabilistically infer the likelihood of spectrum accessibility. This scheme provides a completely new way to solve the problem of low spectral efficiency of cognitive radio in rail transit.

Description: Enterprise cognitive computing (ECC) applications are generating a great deal of excitement for organizations. However, they have yet to demonstrate a business impact on a large scale. An important reason for this is a failure to understand how such applications can contribute to a company’s business objectives and the challenges associated with implementing them. In this article, the authors provide an overview of cognitive computing applications for the enterprise. In particular, they classify opportunities for developing ECC applications and describe challenges in implementing them. Their findings are based on a study of 51 ECC application initiatives across a broad range of industries in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. Given the lack of systematic descriptions regarding what is possible from ECC, this article should be valuable to researchers and practitioners in unpacking the black box of cognitive computing.
