Description: New, wide-range reference equations for the thermal conductivity of ethene and propene as a function of temperature and density are presented. The equations are based in part upon a body of experimental data that have been critically assessed for internal consistency and for agreement with theory whenever possible. For ethene, we estimate the uncertainty (at the 95% confidence level) for the thermal conductivity from 110 to 520 K at pressures up to 200 MPa to be 5% for the compressed liquid and supercritical phases. For the low-pressure gas phase (to 0.1 MPa) over the temperature range 270–680 K, the estimated uncertainty is 4%. The correlation is valid from 110 to 680 K and up to 200 MPa, but it behaves in a physically reasonable manner down to the triple point and may be used at pressures up to 300 MPa, although the uncertainty will be larger in regions where experimental data were unavailable. In the case of propene, data are much more limited. We estimate the uncertainty for the thermal conductivity of propene from 180 to 625 K at pressures up to 50 MPa to be 5% for the gas, liquid, and supercritical phases. The correlation is valid from 180 to 625 K and up to 50 MPa, but it behaves in a physically reasonable manner down to the triple point and may be used at pressures up to 100 MPa, although the uncertainty will be larger in regions where experimental data were unavailable. For both fluids, uncertainties in the critical region are much larger, since the thermal conductivity approaches infinity at the critical point and is very sensitive to small changes in density.

Description: A compendium of phase change enthalpies published in 2010 is updated to include the period 1880–2015. Phase change enthalpies including fusion, vaporization, and sublimation enthalpies are included for organic, organometallic, and a few inorganic compounds. Part 1 of this compendium includes organic compounds from C 1 to C 10 . Part 2 of this compendium, to be published separately, will include organic and organometallic compounds from C 11 to C 192 . Sufficient data are presently available to permit thermodynamic cycles to be constructed as an independent means of evaluating the reliability of the data. Temperature adjustments of phase change enthalpies from the temperature of measurement to the standard reference temperature, T = 298.15 K, and a protocol for doing so are briefly discussed.

Description: The mutual solubilities and related liquid–liquid equilibria for 11 ternary systems of C 1 –C 3 alcohols with aromatic hydrocarbons and water are exhaustively and critically reviewed. Reports of experimental determination of solubility that appeared in the primary literature prior to the end of 2012 are compiled. For nine systems, sufficient data are available (two or more independent determinations) to allow critical evaluation. All new data are expressed as mass percent and mole fraction as well as the originally reported units. In addition to the standard evaluation criteria used throughout the Solubility Data Series, an additional criterion was used for each of the evaluated systems. These systems include one binary miscibility gap in the hydrocarbon + water subsystem. The binary tie lines were compared with the recommended values published previously.

Description: In previous papers, we have proposed specific correlations to reproduce the surface tension values for several sets of fluids and for wide ranges of temperatures. In this paper, we focus our attention on organic fatty (aliphatic, carboxylic, and polyfunctional) acids. We have taken into account the available data and values in the DIPPR and DETHERM databases and also Wohlfarth and Wohlfarth’s (1997) book. In some cases we have also considered new data published elsewhere. All the data and values have been carefully filtered and subsequently fitted with the use of the model currently implemented in NIST’s REFPROP program, calculating two or four adjustable coefficients for each fluid. As a result, we propose recommended correlations for 99 acids, providing mean absolute percentage deviations below 1.6% in all cases.

Description: We have set up and manually curated a dataset containing experimental information on the impact of amino acid substitutions in a protein on its thermal stability. It consists of a repository of experimentally measured melting temperatures ( T m ) and their changes upon point mutations (Δ T m ) for proteins having a well-resolved x-ray structure. This high-quality dataset is designed for being used for the training or benchmarking of in silico thermal stability prediction methods. It also reports other experimentally measured thermodynamic quantities when available, i.e., the folding enthalpy (Δ H ) and heat capacity (Δ C P ) of the wild type proteins and their changes upon mutations (ΔΔ H and ΔΔ C P ), as well as the change in folding free energy (ΔΔ G ) at a reference temperature. These data are analyzed in view of improving our insights into the correlation between thermal and thermodynamic stabilities, the asymmetry between the number of stabilizing and destabilizing mutations, and the difference in stabilization potential of thermostable versus mesostable proteins.

Description: A new correlation for the viscosity of meta -xylene is presented. The correlation is based upon a body of experimental data that has been critically assessed for internal consistency and for agreement with theory. It is applicable in the temperature range from 273 to 673 K at pressures up to 200 MPa. The overall uncertainty of the proposed correlation, estimated as the combined expanded uncertainty with a coverage factor of 2, varies from 1% for the viscosity at atmospheric pressure to 5% for the highest temperatures and pressures of interest. Tables of the viscosity, generated by the relevant equations, at selected temperatures and pressures, and along the saturation line, are provided.

Description: This paper contains new, representative reference equations for the thermal conductivity of carbon dioxide. The equations are based in part upon a body of experimental data that has been critically assessed for internal consistency and for agreement with theory whenever possible. In the case of the dilute-gas thermal conductivity, we incorporated recent theoretical calculations to extend the temperature range of the experimental data. Moreover, in the critical region, the experimentally observed enhancement of the thermal conductivity is well represented by theoretically based equations containing just one adjustable parameter. The correlation is applicable for the temperature range from the triple point to 1100 K and pressures up to 200 MPa. The overall uncertainty (at the 95% confidence level) of the proposed correlation varies depending on the state point from a low of 1% at very low pressures below 0.1 MPa between 300 and 700 K, to 5% at the higher pressures of the range of validity.

Description: A new correlation for the viscosity of ortho -xylene ( o -xylene) is presented. The correlation is based upon a body of experimental data that has been critically assessed for internal consistency and for agreement with theory. It is applicable in the temperature range from 273 to 673 K at pressures up to 110 MPa. The overall uncertainty of the proposed correlation, estimated as the combined expanded uncertainty with a coverage factor of 2, varies from 1% for the viscosity at atmospheric pressure to 5% for the highest temperatures and pressures of interest. Tables of the viscosity generated by the relevant equations, at selected temperatures and pressures and along the saturation line, are provided.

Description: An empirical equation of state correlation is proposed for the Lennard-Jones model fluid. The equation in terms of the Helmholtz energy is based on a large molecular simulation data set and thermal virial coefficients. The underlying data set consists of directly simulated residual Helmholtz energy derivatives with respect to temperature and density in the canonical ensemble. Using these data introduces a new methodology for developing equations of state from molecular simulation. The correlation is valid for temperatures 0.5 〈 T / T c 〈 7 and pressures up to p / p c = 500. Extensive comparisons to simulation data from the literature are made. The accuracy and extrapolation behavior are better than for existing equations of state.

Description: A complete set of calculated vibration–rotation energies of 12 C 2 H 2 ( X ˜ 1 Σ g + ) is provided for all vibrational states up to 13 000 cm −1 and some at higher energies, with rotational ( J ) and vibrational angular momentum ( l ) quantum numbers such that 0 ≤ J ≤ 100 and 0 ≤ | l | ≤ 20, respectively. The calculation is performed using a global effective Hamiltonian and related spectroscopic constants from the literature [B. Amyay et al. , J. Mol. Spectrosc. 267 , 80 (2011)], based on the polyad model. The numerical values of all related polyad matrix elements are also provided. The model and equations for the Hamiltonian matrix elements are gathered. The experimental acetylene database used for determining the parameters is listed.

Description: Energy levels, wavelengths, lifetimes, and hyperfine structure constants for the isotopes of the first and second spectra of radium, Ra I and Ra II, have been compiled. Wavelengths and wavenumbers are tabulated for 226 Ra and for other Ra isotopes. Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure constants of even and odd-A isotopes of neutral radium atom and singly ionized radium are included. Experimental lifetimes of the states for both neutral and ionic Ra are also added, where available. The information is beneficial for present and future experiments aimed at different physics motivations using neutral Ra and singly ionized Ra.

Description: Most of the chemical elements have now been compressed close to or above 100 GPa (1 Mbar) pressure in diamond-anvil cells and the pressure–volume room-temperature isotherms have been measured. We collect these data and use simple lattice-dynamics models to reduce the isotherms to 0 K. We have extended the published work by making new diamond-anvil-cell measurements on Cr and Rh, and by conducting density-functional calculations on the elements Po, At, Rn, Fr, Ra, and Ac. The 0 K data are tabulated for all elements 1 ≤ Z ≤ 92 and 0 ≤ P ≤ 100 GPa. These data are useful for generating wide-range equation of state models and for studying the stability of chemical compounds at high pressure (“Megabar chemistry”). The tables presented here are intended to be reference thermodynamic tables for use in high-pressure research. Further experimental and theoretical work will be needed to extend the tables to higher pressure and to improve accuracy.

Description: Cross section data are reviewed for electron collisions with nitric oxide. Collision processes considered are total scattering, elastic scattering, momentum transfer, excitations of rotational, vibrational, and electronic states, ionization, and dissociative electron attachment. After a survey of the literature (up to the end of 2015), recommended values of the cross section are determined, as far as possible.

Description: This paper gives the 2014 self-consistent set of values of the constants and conversion factors of physics and chemistry recommended by the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA). These values are based on a least-squares adjustment that takes into account all data available up to 31 December 2014. Details of the data selection and methodology of the adjustment are described. The recommended values may also be found at http://physics.nist.gov/constants .

Description: A new viscosity formulation for propane, using the reference equation of state for its thermodynamic properties by Lemmon et al. [J. Chem. Eng. Data 54 , 3141 (2009)] and valid in the fluid region from the triple-point temperature to 650 K and pressures up to 100 MPa, is presented. At the beginning, a zero-density contribution and one for the critical enhancement, each based on the experimental data, were independently generated in parts. The higher-density contributions are correlated as a function of the reciprocal reduced temperature τ = T c / T and of the reduced density δ = ρ / ρ c ( T c —critical temperature, ρ c —critical density). The final formulation includes 17 coefficients inferred by applying a state-of-the-art linear optimization algorithm. The evaluation and choice of the primary data sets are detailed due to its importance. The viscosity at low pressures p ≤ 0.2 MPa is represented with an expanded uncertainty of 0.5% (coverage factor k = 2) for temperatures 273 ≤ T /K ≤ 625. The expanded uncertainty in the vapor phase at subcritical temperatures T ≥ 273 K as well as in the supercritical thermodynamic region T ≤ 423 K at pressures p ≤ 30 MPa is assumed to be 1.5%. In the near-critical region (1.001 〈 1/ τ 〈 1.010 and 0.8 〈 δ 〈 1.2), the expanded uncertainty increases with decreasing temperature up to 3.0%. It is further increased to 4.0% in regions of less reliable primary data sets and to 6.0% in ranges in which no primary data are available but the equation of state is valid. Tables of viscosity computed for the new formulation are given in an Appendix for the single-phase region, for the vapor–liquid phase boundary, and for the near-critical region.

In the case of the dilute-gas thermal conductivity, a theoretically based correlation was adopted in order to extend the temperature range of the experimental data. In the critical region, the enhancement of the thermal conductivity is well represented by theoretically based equations containing just one adjustable parameter, estimated by a predictive scheme. The thermal-conductivity equations behave in a physically reasonable manner over a wide range of conditions that correspond to the range of validity of the most accurate equations of state for each fluid. The estimated uncertainties of the correlations are dependent on the availability of accurate experimental data for validation, and are different for each fluid, varying from 1% (at the 95% confidence level) for the liquid phase of iso -pentane over the temperature range 307 K 〈 T

Description: This paper contains new, representative reference equations for the viscosity of toluene. The equations are based in part upon a body of experimental data that have been critically assessed for internal consistency and for agreement with theory whenever possible. The correlations are valid from the triple point (178.0 K) to 675 K, and at pressures up to 500 MPa. The estimated uncertainty at a 95% confidence level varies depending on the region of temperature and pressure from a low of 0.3% for the low-density gas at temperatures from 305 to 640 K at pressures to 0.3 MPa (essentially the uncertainty of the best experimental data) to 0.7% for the saturated liquid at temperatures from 263 to 373 K, to 5% for the low-temperature liquid from 187 to 210 K at pressures to 15 MPa.

Description: Cross section data are compiled from the literature for electron collisions with methane (CH 4 ) molecules. Cross sections are collected and reviewed for total scattering, elastic scattering, momentum transfer, excitations of rotational and vibrational states, dissociation, ionization, and dissociative attachment. The data derived from swarm experiments are also considered. For each of these processes, the recommended values of the cross sections are presented. The literature has been surveyed through early 2014.

Description: The current situation in studies of lifetimes of excited rovibronic levels for the H 2 , D 2 , T 2 , HD, HT, and DT molecules is analyzed. All measured lifetime values (792 entries for 618 different vibro-rotational levels of 33 electronic states) reported in 61 publications before April 2015 are compiled and listed in tabular format together with an annotated bibliography. Experimental data are only available for the H 2 , HD, and D 2 molecules. The data collected in the present work show fragmentariness of experimental data. For the vast majority of the levels, the lifetime values were reported in one paper only and up to now are without independent experimental verification. A complete bibliography of publications concerning semiempirical determination and nonempirical calculations of the lifetimes is presented. Numerical results obtained in the framework of these two approaches are listed only in cases when experimental data are available. For more than half of the levels, the differences between measured and calculated values are three times higher than experimental errors. These discrepancies show necessity of more precise experimental and nonempirical studies. For some 79 rovibronic levels, our analysis makes it possible to propose certain set of recommended lifetime values.

Description: The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is one of the most precisely measured quantities in experimental particle physics. Its latest measurement at Brookhaven National Laboratory deviates from the Standard Model expectation by approximately 3.5 standard deviations. The goal of the new experiment, E989, now under construction at Fermilab, is a fourfold improvement in precision. Here, we discuss the details of the future measurement and its current status.

Description: In 2011, a discrepancy between the values of the Planck constant measured by counting Si atoms and by comparing mechanical and electrical powers prompted a review, among others, of the measurement of the spacing of 28 Si {220} lattice planes, either to confirm the measured value and its uncertainty or to identify errors. This exercise confirmed the result of the previous measurement and yields the additional value d 220 = 192 014 711.98(34) am having a reduced uncertainty.

Description: Positronium (Ps) is an ideal system for precision test of bound state quantum electrodynamics. The hyperfine splitting (HFS) of the ground state of Ps, which is one of the most precisely tested quantity, has a large discrepancy of 16 ppm (4.5 σ ) between previous experiments and theoretical calculation up to O ( α 3 ln α −1 ) and part of O ( α 3 ) corrections. A new experiment which reduces possible systematic uncertainties of Ps thermalization effect and nonuniformity of magnetic field was performed. It revealed that the Ps thermalization effect was as large as 10 ± 2 ppm. Treating the thermalization effect correctly, a new result of 203.3942 ± 0.0016(stat., 8.0 ppm) ± 0.0013(sys., 6.4 ppm) GHz was obtained. This result is consistent with theory within 1.1 σ , whereas it disfavors the previous experimental result by 2.6 σ . It shows that the Ps thermalization effect is crucial for precision measurement of HFS. Future prospects for improved precision are briefly discussed.

Description: A new representation of the viscosity for the fluid phase of ethane includes a zero-density correlation and a contribution for the critical enhancement, initially both developed separately, but based on experimental data. The higher-density contributions are correlated as a function of the reduced density δ = ρ / ρ c and of the reciprocal reduced temperature τ = T c / T ( ρ c —critical density and T c —critical temperature). The final formulation contains 14 coefficients obtained using a state-of-the-art linear optimization algorithm. The evaluation and choice of the selected primary data sets is reviewed, in particular with respect to the assessment used in earlier viscosity correlations. The new viscosity surface correlation makes use of the reference equation of state for the thermodynamic properties of ethane by Bücker and Wagner [J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data 35 , 205 (2006)] and is valid in the fluid region from the melting line to temperatures of 675 K and pressures of 100 MPa. The viscosity in the limit of zero density is described with an expanded uncertainty of 0.5% (coverage factor k = 2) for temperatures 290 〈 T /K 〈 625, increasing to 1.0% at temperatures down to 212 K. The uncertainty of the correlated values is 1.5% in the range 290 〈 T /K 〈 430 at pressures up to 30 MPa on the basis of recent measurements judged to be very reliable as well as 4.0% and 6.0% in further regions. The uncertainty in the near-critical region (1.001 〈 1/ τ 〈 1.010 and 0.8 〈 δ 〈 1.2) increases with decreasing temperature up to 3.0% considering the available reliable data. Tables of the viscosity calculated from the correlation are listed in an appendix for the single-phase region, for the vapor–liquid phase boundary, and for the near-critical region.

Description: There has been for a while a large discrepancy between the values of the proton charge radius measured by the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen and by other methods. It has already been clear that theory of muonic hydrogen is reliable at the level of this discrepancy and an error there cannot be a reason for the contradiction. Still the status of theory at the level of the uncertainty of the muonic-hydrogen experiment (which is two orders of magnitude below the discrepancy level) requires an additional clarification. Here, we revisit theory of the 2 p − 2 s Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen. We summarize all the theoretical contributions in order α 5 m , including pure quantum electrodynamics (QED) ones as well as those which involve the proton-structure effects. Certain enhanced higher-order effects are also discussed. We basically confirm former QED calculations of other authors, present a review of recent calculations of the proton-structure effects, and treat self-consistently higher-order proton-finite-size corrections. We also overview theory of the 2 p states. Eventually, we derive a value of the root-mean-square proton charge radius. It is found to be 0.840 29(55) fm, which is slightly different from that previously published in the literature (0.840 87(39) fm [Antognini et al. , Science 339 , 417 (2013)]).

Description: A new fundamental equation of state explicit in the Helmholtz energy is presented for 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane (R-245fa), based on recent experimental data for vapor pressures, densities, and sound speeds. The functional form uses Gaussian bell-shaped terms, according to recent trends in the development of accurate equations of state. The independent variables of the equation of state are temperature and density. The equation is valid for temperatures between the triple point (170.0 K) and 440 K, and for pressures up to 200 MPa. Estimated uncertainties in this range are 0.1% for vapor pressures, 0.1% for saturated liquid densities, 0.1% for liquid densities below 70 MPa, 0.2% for densities at higher pressures, 0.3% for vapor densities, 0.3% for liquid sound speeds, and 0.1% for vapor sound speeds. The uncertainties in the critical region are higher for all properties except vapor pressures. The equation shows reasonable extrapolation behavior at extremely low and high temperatures, and at high pressures.

Description: Over the past several years, considerable scientific and technical interest has been focused on accurate thermodynamic properties of fluid water covering part of the subcooled (metastable) region and the stable liquid from the melting line up to about 300 K and pressures up to several hundred MPa. Between 2000 and 2010, experimental density data were published whose accuracy was not completely clear. The scientific standard equation of state for fluid water, the IAPWS-95 formulation, was developed on the basis of experimental data for thermodynamic properties that were available by 1995. In this work, it is examined how IAPWS-95 behaves with respect to the experimental data published after 1995. This investigation is carried out for temperatures from 250 to 300 K and pressures up to 400 MPa. The starting point is the assessment of the current data situation. This was mainly performed on the basis of data for the density, expansivity, compressibility, and isobaric heat capacity, which were derived in 2015 from very accurate speed-of-sound data. Apart from experimental data and these derived data, property values calculated from the recently published equation of state for this region of Holten et al. (2014) were also used. As a result, the unclear data situation could be clarified, and uncertainty values could be estimated for the investigated properties. In the region described above, detailed comparisons show that IAPWS-95 is able to represent the latest experimental data for the density, expansivity, compressibility, speed of sound, and isobaric heat capacity to within the uncertainties given in the release on IAPWS-95. Since the release does not contain uncertainty estimates for expansivities and compressibilities, the statement relates to the error propagation of the given uncertainty in density. Due to the lack of experimental data for the isobaric heat capacity for pressures above 100 MPa, no uncertainty estimates are given in the release for this pressure range. Results of the investigation of IAPWS-95 concerning its behavior with regard to the isobaric heat capacity in the high-pressure low-temperature region are also presented. Comparisons with very accurate speed-of-sound data published in 2012 showed that the uncertainty estimates of IAPWS-95 in speed of sound could be decreased for temperatures from 283 to 473 K and pressures up to 400 MPa.

Description: The paper presents the current status of the theory of bound-electron g factor in highly charged ions. The calculations of the relativistic, quantum electrodynamics (QED), nuclear recoil, nuclear structure, and interelectronic-interaction corrections to the g factor are reviewed. Special attention is paid to tests of QED effects at strong coupling regime and determinations of the fundamental constants.

Description: In light of the proton radius puzzle, the discrepancy between measurements of the proton charge radius from muonic hydrogen and those from electronic hydrogen and electron–proton (e–p) scattering measurements, we re-examine the charge radius extractions from electron scattering measurements. We provide a recommended value for the proton root-mean-square charge radius, r E = 0.879 ± 0.011 fm, based on a global examination of elastic e–p scattering data. The uncertainties include contributions to account for tension between different data sets and inconsistencies between radii using different extraction procedures.

Description: In previous papers, some of us have proposed specific correlations to reproduce the surface tension values for several sets of fluids and for wide ranges of temperatures. In this paper, we focus our attention on refrigerants. In particular, we consider the data available for 86 refrigerant fluids using recent versions of the DIPPR and DETHERM databases and the book of Wohlfarth and Wohlfarth (1997) as main sources. In some cases, new data available have been added from other sources, with these data being appropriately selected. In some cases, two or more different trends of data were observed, and, where possible, the authors have considered only one of those trends. To fit the data finally considered, we used the same model as currently used in REFPROP program of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Two or four adjustable coefficients were needed for the refrigerants we studied. For three of these fluids, it was not possible to obtain an adequate fit to the selected data. We have therefore proposed correlations for 83 refrigerants, giving mean average percentage deviations below 2.7%.

Description: Theory of the isotope shift of the centroid energies of light few-electron atoms is reviewed. Numerical results are presented for the isotope shift of the 2 3 P -2 3 S and 2 1 S -2 3 S transition energies of 3 He and 4 He. By comparing theoretical predictions for the isotope shift with the experimental results, the difference of the squares of the nuclear charge radii of 3 He and 4 He, δR 2 , is determined with high accuracy.

Description: The most recent tabulations of nuclear magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments have been prepared and published by the Nuclear Data Section of the IAEA, Vienna [N. J. Stone, Report No. INDC(NDS)-0650 (2013); Report No. INDC(NDS)-0658 (2014)]. The first of these is a table of recommended quadrupole moments for all isotopes in which all experimental results are made consistent with a limited number of adopted standards for each element; the second is a combined listing of all measurements of both moments. Both tables cover all isotopes and energy levels. In this paper, the considerations relevant to the preparation of both tables are described, together with observations as to the importance and (where appropriate) application of necessary corrections to achieve the “best” values. Some discussion of experimental methods is included with emphasis on their precision. The aim of the published quadrupole moment table is to provide a standard reference in which the value given for each moment is the best available and for which full provenance is given. A table of recommended magnetic dipole moments is in preparation, with the same objective in view.

Description: We discuss the determination of electromagnetic form factors from the world data on electron–nucleus scattering for nuclei Z ≤ 3, with particular emphasis on the derivation of the moments required for comparison with measurements from electronic/muonic atoms and isotope shifts.

Description: This paper is a brief overview of the existing systematics on nuclear mean square charge radii, obtained by a combined analysis of data from different types of experiment. The various techniques yielding data on nuclear charge radii are summarized. Their specific feature complexities and the accuracy and precision of the obtained information are also discussed.

Description: This is the third part of the volume devoted to solubility data for the rare earth metal ( REM ) fluorides in water and in aqueous ternary and multicomponent systems. It covers experimental results of trivalent fluorides of Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu (so-called heavy lanthanides), since no quantitative data on solubilities of TbF 4 and YbF 2 (the most stable compounds at these valencies) are available. The related literature has been covered through the end of 2014. Compilations of all available papers with the solubility data are introduced for each REM fluoride with a corresponding critical evaluation. Every such assessment contains a collection of all solubility results in aqueous solution, a selection of suggested solubility data, a solubility equation, and a brief discussion of the multicomponent systems. Only simple fluorides (no complexes or double salts) are treated as the input substances in this report. General features of the systems, such as nature of the equilibrium solid phases, solubility as a function of temperature, influence of ionic strength, solution pH, mixed solvent medium on the solubility, quality of the solubility results, and the solubility as a function of REM atomic number, have already been presented in Part 1 of the volume.

Description: An additional value of the Avogadro constant was obtained by counting the atoms in isotopically enriched Si spheres. With respect to the previous determination, the spheres were etched and repolished to eliminate metal contaminations and to improve the roundness. In addition, all the input quantities—molar mass, lattice parameter, mass, and volume—were remeasured aiming at a smaller uncertainty. In order to make the values given in Andreas et al. [Metrologia 48 , S1 (2011)] and Azuma et al. [Metrologia 52 , 360 (2015)] usable for a least squares adjustment, we report about the estimate of their correlation.

Description: We present a brief overview of the presentations at the workshop on the determination of the fundamental constants (Eltville, 2015) and the contributions to the proceedings.

Description: Revised parameters for variable soft sphere (VSS) and Lennard-Jones (L-J) (6-12) models are presented for eight common gases in the temperature range 20–2200 K. The new parameters are based on a critical review of experimental measurements and ab-initio calculations of shear viscosity and self-diffusion coefficients. The optimized parameters are assessed relative to experimental measurements and ab-initio calculations of thermal conductivity. Results indicate most significant improvements for the VSS model occur when considering lighter gases where repulsive forces are more important. The agreement with transport property measurements for He gas extends to much higher temperatures using the revised parameters. The accuracy of the L-J model is more significantly improved when considering the heavier gases for which attractive forces are important over a wider temperature range.

Description: A new correlation for the viscosity of para -xylene ( p -xylene) is presented. The correlation is based upon a body of experimental data that has been critically assessed for internal consistency and for agreement with theory. It is applicable in the temperature range from the triple point to 673 K at pressures up to 110 MPa. The overall uncertainty of the proposed correlation, estimated as the combined expanded uncertainty with a coverage factor of 2, varies from 0.5% for the viscosity of the dilute gas to 5% for the highest temperatures and pressures of interest. Tables of the viscosity generated by the relevant equations, at selected temperatures and pressures and along the saturation line, are provided.

Description: A review of literature on enthalpies of formation and molar entropies for alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, hydroperoxides, and their associated radicals has been compiled and critically evaluated. By comparing literature values, the overall uncertainty in thermochemical properties of small hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons can be highlighted. In general, there is good agreement between heat of formation values in the literature for stable species; however, there is greater uncertainty in the values for radical species and for molar entropy values. Updated values for a group-additivity method for the estimation of thermochemical properties based on the evaluated literature data are proposed. The new values can be used to estimate thermochemical data for larger, combustion-relevant species for which no calculations or measurements currently exist, with increased confidence.

Description: A detailed examination of issues associated with proton radius extractions from elastic electron–proton scattering experiments is presented. Sources of systematic uncertainty and model dependence in the extractions are discussed, with an emphasis on how these may impact the proton charge and magnetic radii. A comparison of recent Mainz data to previous world data is presented, highlighting the difference in treatment of systematic uncertainties as well as tension between different data sets. We find several issues that suggest that larger uncertainties than previously quoted may be appropriate, but do not find any corrections which would resolve the proton radius puzzle.

Description: The history of estimation of the heliocentric gravitational constant is given. Initially the value of GM ⊙ was based on the mean period of motion of the Earth around the Sun, then on estimation of the value of the astronomical unit, and finally the modern value of GM ⊙ is determined with the extraordinarily high accuracy, GM ⊙ = 132 712 440 042 ± 10 (km 3 /s 2 ), while fitting ephemerides to high-precision radar observations.

Description: In previous papers, we have proposed specific correlations to reproduce the surface tension values for several sets of fluids and for wide ranges of temperatures. In this paper, we focus our attention on alcohols and consider the available data for 152 fluids grouped into five families. We use the most recent versions of the DIPPR and DETHERM databases and also Wohlfarth and Wohlfarth’s (1997) book as our main sources of data. In some cases we have also considered new data. All the data have been carefully filtered in order to discard those that are in clear disagreement with most of the available data for the same fluid. In some cases, two or more different data sets versus temperature trends were observed, and where possible we considered only one of these trends. To fit the finally selected data, we used the model currently implemented in National Institute of Standards and Technology’s refprop program, calculating two, four, or six adjustable coefficients for each fluid. As a result, we proposed recommended correlations for 147 alcohols, providing mean average percentage deviations below 1.7% for each fluid, with only two exceptions: 1,2-butanediol (2.77%) and benzyl alcohol (3.20%).

Description: Theoretical energy levels of the n = 1 and n = 2 states of hydrogen-like atoms with the nuclear charge numbers 1 ≤ Z ≤ 110 are tabulated. The tabulation is based on ab initio quantum electrodynamics calculations performed to all orders in the nuclear binding strength parameter Zα , where α is the fine structure constant. Theoretical errors due to various effects are critically examined and estimated.

Description: We report the latest advances in the Doppler-free spectroscopy of the 1S–3S transition in hydrogen. A new continuous ultra-violet source has been developed and delivers a power level of 15 mW. With this setup, the statistical uncertainty on the 1S–3S transition frequency measurement is 2.2 kHz. Combined with the 1S–2S frequency, absolute accuracy at that level would significantly enlighten the proton radius puzzle .

Description: For many decades, improvements in both theory and experiment of the fine structure of the n = 2 triplet P levels of helium have allowed for an increasingly precise determination of the fine-structure constant. Recently, it has been observed that quantum-mechanical interference between neighboring resonances can cause significant shifts, even if such neighboring resonances are separated by thousands of natural widths. The shifts depend in detail on the experimental method used for the measurement, as well as the specific experimental parameters employed. Here, we review how these shifts apply for the most precise measurements of the helium 2 3 P fine-structure intervals.

Description: A comprehensive review of the thermodynamic properties of the oxide compounds of the lanthanide and actinide elements is presented. The available literature data for the solid, liquid, and gaseous state have been analysed and recommended values are presented. In case experimental data are missing, estimates have been made based on the trends in the two series, which are extensively discussed.

Description: An analysis is presented of measured and calculated cross sections for inner-shell ionization by electron impact. We describe the essentials of classical and semiclassical models and of quantum approximations for computing ionization cross sections. The emphasis is on the recent formulation of the distorted-wave Born approximation by Bote and Salvat [Phys. Rev. A77, 042701 (2008)] that has been used to generate an extensive database of cross sections for the ionization of the K shell and the L and M subshells of all elements from hydrogen to einsteinium ( Z = 1 to Z = 99) by electrons and positrons with kinetic energies up to 1 GeV. We describe a systematic method for evaluating cross sections for emission of x rays and Auger electrons based on atomic transition probabilities from the Evaluated Atomic Data Library of Perkins et al. [Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, UCRL-ID-50400, 1991]. We made an extensive comparison of measured K-shell, L-subshell, and M-subshell ionization cross sections and of Lα x-ray production cross sections with the corresponding calculated cross sections. We identified elements for which there were at least three (for K shells) or two (for L and M subshells) mutually consistent sets of cross-section measurements and for which the cross sections varied with energy as expected by theory. The overall average root-mean-square deviation between the measured and calculated cross sections was 10.9% and the overall average deviation was −2.5%. This degree of agreement between measured and calculated ionization and x-ray production cross sections was considered to be very satisfactory given the difficulties of these measurements.

Description: Solubility data are compiled and reviewed for 33 nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs dissolved in neat organic solvents and in well-defined binary and ternary organic solvents. The compiled solubility data were retrieved primarily from the chemical and pharmaceutical literature covering the period from 1980 to the beginning of 2014.

Description: World utilization of deuterium is anticipated to increase with the rise of fusion-energy machines such as ITER and NIF. We present a new fundamental equation of state for the thermodynamic properties of fluid deuterium. Differences between thermodynamic properties of orthodeuterium, normal deuterium, and paradeuterium are described. Separate ideal-gas functions were fitted for these separable forms together with a single real-fluid residual function. The equation of state is valid from the melting line to a maximum pressure of 2000 MPa and an upper temperature limit of 600 K, corresponding to available experimental measurements. The uncertainty in predicted density is 0.5% over the valid temperature range and pressures up to 300 MPa. The uncertainties of vapor pressures and saturated liquid densities are 2% and 3%, respectively, while speed-of-sound values are accurate to within 1% in the liquid phase.

Description: This work presents an assessment of solubility data for rare earth metal fluorides (generally of trivalent metals and of CeF 4 ) in water and in aqueous ternary systems. Reports of experimental determination of solubility that appeared in the primary literature prior to the middle of 2012 are included. For seven systems, sufficient data (two or more independent desterminations) for critical evaluation are available. All data are expressed as mass percent and mole fraction as well as the originally reported units. In addition to the standard evaluation criteria used throughout the Solubility Data Series, two additional criteria were used for each of the evaluated systems. These systems include two binary miscibility gaps in the alcohol + water and hydrocarbon + water subsystems. The binary tie lines were compared with the recommended values published previously and with values obtained with a predictive NRTL model.

Description: Accurate correlations are given for the temperature dependence of the surface tension of 37 fluids included in NIST's REFPROP program. The surface tension of these fluids was not included in the most recent version of this program, V9.12. A set of data was constructed for each of these fluids by including principally the values given in the DIPPR, DETHERM, and TDE databases and Wohlfarth and Wohlfarth's book. For some fluids, other available sources of data were added in order to obtain adequate sets. The correlation expression used is the same as used for other fluids in REFPROP. For 31 fluids it was enough to use two adjustable coefficients, whereas four coefficients were needed for the other 6 fluids. For 19 fluids, the mean average percentage deviation was below 1%, and for another 16 it ranged from 1% to 2%.

Description: This paper contains new, representative reference equations for the viscosity of benzene. The equations are based in part upon a body of experimental data that has been critically assessed for internal consistency and for agreement with theory whenever possible. The correlation is valid from the triple point (278.647 K) to 675 K, and at pressures up to 300 MPa, with the exception of temperatures lower than 350 K where the pressure is restricted to 200 MPa. For the liquid phase, at temperatures from 288 to 373 K at pressures up to 80 MPa, we estimate the uncertainty (at a 95% confidence level) to be 1.8%, increasing to 3.4% at 200 MPa, and 5% at pressures up to the correlation maximum. For the liquid at temperatures from 373 to 523 K, the uncertainty is 2.7% at pressures from saturation to 50 MPa, rising to 3.6% at 300 MPa. For temperatures above 523 K, we estimate the uncertainty in the liquid phase to be 5%. The uncertainty for the low-density fluid phase at temperatures from 305 to 640 K and pressures to 0.3 MPa is estimated to be 0.2%.

The correlation is valid from the triple point (182.55 K) to 600 K, and at pressures up to 248 MPa. The estimated uncertainty at a 95% confidence level is 3.5% over the whole range (with the exception of the near-critical region). Along the saturated liquid curve, the estimated uncertainty is 1% below 292 K, 0.6% in the region from 292 to 346 K, rising to 2% between 346 and 363 K, and 0.3% for the low-density gas at temperatures from 317 to 600 K and pressures to 0.3 MPa.

For this volume, the literature was covered from 1981 to 2009 with some papers from 2010. Some earlier papers missed in the 1981 volume are included. Interest in the solubility of oxygen and of ozone continues to be high. The solubility of oxygen in water at low pressure seems well established, but more work is needed on the solubility of oxygen in water at high pressure and high temperature. There is now a wealth of salt-effect data on the solubility in aqueous salt solutions, but some glaring discrepancies still exist. Little has been done on salt effects at high pressure and high temperature. The solubility data of oxygen in hydrocarbons seem sparse. The solubility of oxygen in alcohols through C 5 seems well established. Between the 1981 volume and this volume, there are solubility data in over 70 fluorocarbons and fluorocarbon compounds with O, H, S, and N. A new area is the solubility of oxygen in ionic liquids, which are becoming increasingly important as replacement solvents for volatile organic solvents. Information on the solubility of ozone in water, aqueous solutions and organic liquids has also been updated.

Description: An equation of state is presented for the thermodynamic properties of cold and supercooled water. It is valid for temperatures from the homogeneous ice nucleation temperature up to 300 K and for pressures up to 400 MPa, and can be extrapolated up to 1000 MPa. The equation of state is compared with experimental data for the density, expansion coefficient, isothermal compressibility, speed of sound, and heat capacity. Estimates for the accuracy of the equation are given. The melting curve of ice I is calculated from the phase-equilibrium condition between the proposed equation and an existing equation of state for ice I.

Description: An equation of state for cyclohexane has been developed using the Helmholtz energy as the fundamental property with independent variables of density and temperature. Multi-property fitting technology was used to fit the equation of state to data for pρT , heat capacities, sound speeds, virial coefficients, vapor pressures, and saturated densities. The equation of state was developed to conform to the Maxwell criteria for two-phase vapor-liquid equilibrium states, and is valid from the triple-point temperature to 700 K, with pressures up to 250 MPa and densities up to 10.3 mol dm −3 . In general, the uncertainties ( k = 2, indicating a level of confidence of 95%) in density for the equation of state are 0.1% (liquid and vapor) up to 500 K, and 0.2% above 500 K, with higher uncertainties within the critical region. Between 283 and 473 K with pressures lower than 30 MPa, the uncertainty is as low as 0.03% in density in the liquid phase. The uncertainties in the speed of sound are 0.2% between 283 and 323 K in the liquid, and 1% elsewhere. Other uncertainties are 0.05% in vapor pressure and 2% in heat capacities. The behavior of the equation of state is reasonable within the region of validity and at higher and lower temperatures and pressures. A detailed analysis has been performed in this article.

Description: The existing fundamental equation for ethanol demonstrates undesirable behavior in several areas and especially in the critical region. In addition, new experimental data have become available in the open literature since the publication of the current correlation. The development of a new fundamental equation for ethanol, in the form of Helmholtz energy as a function of temperature and density, is presented. New, nonlinear fitting techniques, along with the new experimental data, are shown to improve the behavior of the fundamental equation. Ancillary equations are developed, including equations for vapor pressure, saturated liquid density, saturated vapor density, and ideal gas heat capacity. Both the fundamental and ancillary equations are compared to experimental data. The fundamental equation can compute densities to within ±0.2%, heat capacities to within ±1%–2%, and speed of sound to within ±1%. Values of the vapor pressure and saturated vapor densities are represented to within ±1% at temperatures of 300 K and above, while saturated liquid densities are represented to within ±0.3% at temperatures of 200 K and above. The uncertainty of all properties is higher in the critical region and near the triple point. The equation is valid for pressures up to 280 MPa and temperatures from 160 to 650 K.

Description: This paper contains new, representative reference equations for the thermal conductivity of o- xylene, m -xylene, p -xylene, and ethylbenzene. The equations are based in part upon a body of experimental data that has been critically assessed for internal consistency and for agreement with theory whenever possible. In the case of the dilute-gas thermal conductivity, a theoretically based correlation was adopted in order to extend the temperature range of the experimental data. Moreover, in the critical region, the experimentally observed enhancement of the thermal conductivity is well represented by theoretically based equations containing just one adjustable parameter. All four correlations are applicable for the temperature range from the triple point of each fluid to 700 K, and an upper pressure limit determined by the maximum density limit for the equation of state used to provide density. At the upper temperature limit of 700 K, the maximum pressure was 200 MPa for m -xylene and p -xylene, but 60 and 70 MPa for ethylbenzene and o -xylene, respectively. At lower temperatures, the maximum pressure is lower. The overall uncertainty (at the 95% confidence level) of the correlations of the thermal conductivity of o- , m -, p -xylene, and ethylbenzene, over their range of applicability, varies for each fluid. For o -xylene, we estimate the uncertainty for liquid and supercritical densities for temperatures from the triple point to 400 K to be 2.6%, and 4% at higher temperatures, and in the dilute-gas region we estimate the uncertainty to be 2%. For m -xylene, the estimated uncertainty for liquid and supercritical densities at temperatures from the triple point to 375 K is 3.6%, and 5% at higher temperatures, and 6% for the dilute gas. For p -xylene, the estimated uncertainty for liquid and supercritical densities at temperatures from the triple point to 700 K is 3.6%, and 2.5% for the dilute gas. Finally, for ethylbenzene the estimated uncertainty for liquid and supercritical densities at temperatures from the triple point to 400 K is 2.8%, and 2.5% in the dilute-gas region. Uncertainties in the critical region for all four fluids are much larger, since the thermal conductivity approaches infinity at the critical point and is very sensitive to small changes in density.

Description: New measurements and a reference correlation for the surface tension of seawater at atmospheric pressure are presented in this paper. Surface tension of seawater was measured across a salinity range of 20 ⩽ S ⩽ 131 g/kg and a temperature range of 1 ⩽ t ⩽ 92 °C at atmospheric pressure using the Wilhelmy plate method. The uncertainty within measurements varied from 0.18 to 0.37 mN/m with the average uncertainty being 0.22 mN/m. The experimental procedures were validated with tests conducted on ACS reagent grade water and aqueous sodium chloride solutions. Literature data and present measurements were evaluated and a reference correlation was developed expressing surface tension of seawater as a function of temperature and salinity. The average absolute percentage deviation between measurements and the correlation was 0.19% while the maximum deviation was 0.60%.

The estimated uncertainty at a 95% confidence level is 3.5% over the whole range (with the exception of the near-critical region). Along the saturated liquid curve, the estimated uncertainty is 1% below 292 K, 0.6% in the region from 292 to 346 K, rising to 2% between 346 and 363 K, and 0.3% for the low-density gas at temperatures from 317 to 600 K and pressures to 0.3 MPa.

Description: This paper presents new reference correlations for both the density and viscosity of squalane at high pressure. These correlations are based on critically evaluated experimental data taken from the literature. In the case of the density, the correlation, based on the Tait equation, is valid from 273 to 473 K at pressures to 200 MPa. At 0.1 MPa, it has an average absolute deviation of 0.03%, a bias of −0.01%, and an expanded uncertainty (at the 95% confidence level) of 0.06%. Over the whole range of pressures, the density correlation has an average absolute deviation of 0.05%, a bias of −0.004%, and an expanded uncertainty (at the 95% confidence level) of 0.18%. In the case of the viscosity, two correlations are presented, one a function of density and temperature, based on the Assael-Dymond model, and the other a function of temperature and pressure, based on a modified Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation. The former is slightly superior to the latter at high temperatures (above 410 K), whereas the reverse is true at low temperatures, where the viscosity is strongly temperature dependent. In the temperature range from 320 to 473 K at pressures to 200 MPa, the first correlation has an average absolute deviation of 1.41%, a bias of −0.09%, and an expanded uncertainty (at the 95% confidence level) of 3%. Below 320 K, deviations from the present scheme rise to a maximum of 20%. In the temperature range from 278 to 473 K at pressures to 200 MPa, the second viscosity correlation has an average absolute deviation of 1.7%, a bias of −0.04%, and an expanded uncertainty (at the 95% confidence level) of 4.75%.
