Beschreibung: Device-to-device (D2D) communications are expected to offload cellular networks and enhance public safety. In addition to the capability of direct communication between devices, the capability of delivering data over multihops in an ad hoc manner by autonomous decision of each device is highly desired to expand application areas of D2D communications. To address this issue, we propose a fast and energy efficient D2D multihop routing method using the geographic locations of nodes. To expedite data delivery while saving transmission powers of nodes, we devise the next hop selection method considering the congestion levels of potential next hops. In addition, we devise a detour scheme to move around a routing hole that is encountered when a node cannot find a neighbor that is closer to the destination of a packet than itself. We also propose management procedures so that each node acquires the locations of destinations and its neighboring nodes. Through extensive simulations, we validate the proposed method by comparing the performance of the proposed method with those of maximum progress method (MaxP), cost over progress method (CoP), and congestion-aware forwarder selection method (CAFS). Even though the number of hops obtained by the proposed method is larger than those obtained by MaxP and CAFS, our method is superior to them in terms of the probability of successfully delivering packets to destinations and total amount of energy consumption. We also show that our method can reduce end-to-end delay considerably compared with CoP.

Beschreibung: It is a great challenge for wireless sensor network to provide enough information for targets localization due to the limits on application environment and its nature, such as energy, communication, and sensing precision. In this paper, a multiple targets localization algorithm with sparse information (MTLSI) was proposed using compressive sensing theory, which can provide targets position with incomplete or sparse localization information. It does not depend on extra hardware measurements. Only targets number detected by sensors is needed in the algorithm. The monitoring region was divided into a plurality of small grids. Sensors and targets are randomly dropped in grids. Targets position information is defined as a sparse vector; the number of targets detected by sensor nodes is expressed as the product of measurement matrix, sparse matrix, and sparse vector in compressive sensing theory. Targets are localized with the sparse signal reconstruction. In order to investigate MTLSI performance, BP and OMP are applied to recover targets localization. Simulation results show that MTLSI can provide satisfied targets localization in wireless sensor networks application with less data bits transmission compared to multiple targets localization using compressive sensing based on received signal strengths (MTLCS-RSS), which has the same computation complexity as MTLIS.

Beschreibung: In distributed sensing systems with constrained communication capabilities, sensors’ noisy measurements must be quantized locally before transmitting to the fusion centre. When the same parameter is observed by a number of sensors, the local quantization rules must be jointly designed to optimize a global objective function. In this work we jointly design the local quantizers by maximizing the mutual information as the optimization criterion, so that the quantized measurements carry the most information about the unknown parameter. A low-complexity iterative approach is suggested for finding the local quantization rules. Using the mutual information as the design criterion, we can easily integrate the effect of communication channels in the design and consequently design channel-aware quantization rules. We observe that the optimal design depends on both the measurement and channel noises. Moreover, our algorithm can be used to design quantizers that can be deployed in different applications. We demonstrate the success of our technique through simulating estimation and detection applications, where our method achieves estimation and detection errors as low as when designing for those special purposes.

Beschreibung: A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), characterized as being self-organizing and multihop, consists of a large number of low-power and low-cost nodes. The cooperation among nodes is the foundation for WSNs to achieve the desired functionalities, such as the delivery or forwarding of packets. However, due to the limited resources such as energy, computational availability, and communication capabilities, there may exist some selfish nodes that refuse to cooperate with others. If the critical masses of nodes do not cooperate in the network, the network would not be able to operate to achieve its functional requirements. To resolve the problem above, we introduce a Win-Stay, Lose-Likely-Shift (WSLLS) approach into a Prisoner’s Dilemma (PD) game framework, and it applies a utility-based function, which is a linear combination of one player’s payoff and its neighbors’ in a game, to evaluate a player’s (i.e., node) performance for a game. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach performs well in stimulating cooperation in different settings under a certain condition with limited information, regardless of the static topologies types of WSNs, initial proportion of cooperation, and the average number of neighbors.

Beschreibung: Energy saving is often achieved via “squeezing” other application-sensitive Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as delay and throughput. Accordingly, energy-saving methods must consider those QoS parameters. In this paper, we survey the most recent work on energy efficiency in WSNs and we discuss the impacts of these methods on the QoS provided. Moreover, we propose a novel divide-and-conquer procedure to deal with the trade-off between energy consumption and other QoS parameters. The idea is to tackle a certain source of energy consumption to minimize the drawn energy. Subsequently, this energy-saving method is refined to consider other service qualities. To support the correctness of our claim, three energy-saving methods, taking the QoS issues into consideration, are given as examples. The first method exploits a so-called Fuzzy transform for shrinking the wireless traffic with highly precise lossy data compression. In the second method, the sensing module is targeted by employing reliable virtual sensors. Such sensors compensate the unavailability of main energy-hungry sensors during sleep periods. The third method exploits a self-adaptive mechanism to improve the QoS parameters via deliberately reducing the lifetime below the maximum time and exploiting design-time knowledge.

Beschreibung: Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) obtain the information of the physical world and impact the environment through many different kinds of devices. Usually, devices with different wireless technologies communicate with each other and the external networks through gateways placed in the working area. Different kinds of devices in a CPS may not operate with each other for their own benefit, and the competition will be more intense between different kinds of devices. They will contend for bandwidth of gateways to increase their throughput and avoid transmission delay. In this paper, we formulate this gateway selection situation as a noncooperative game. We investigate the actions of devices when they change their gateway and the result of devices’ competition. We first give a bandwidth allocation model of gateways and propose a distributed algorithm for clients of gateway selection in order to increase the total bandwidth of their own kind. Then we investigate the migration trends of clients, and three theorems about the condition when clients stop migrating are given. We propose examples of gateway selection game with and without Nash Equilibrium. At last section, we give simulation results of gateway selection game.

Beschreibung: Various protocols have been proposed in the area of wireless sensor networks in order to achieve network-wide time synchronization. A large number of proposed protocols in the literature employ a message passing mechanism to make sensor node clocks tick in unison. In this paper, we first classify Message Passing based Time Synchronization (MPTS) protocols and then analyze them based on different metrics. The classification is based on the following three criteria: structure formation of the network affected by the synchronization protocol, frequency of synchronization process (synchronization interval), and synchronization message overhead. Proposed protocols are analyzed and evaluated from different perspectives based on available data. A comparison table of the reviewed protocols is presented according to the evaluation metrics. Finally, some potential methods will be proposed to improve the synchronization process.

Beschreibung: We investigate the problem of tracking mobile targets in wireless sensor networks. We propose an advanced auxiliary delayed-weight particle filter algorithm (ADWPF). We make a deep study on the evolvement of particles and formally define the tree-like structure relationship among particles based on observations. Most importantly, we add some auxiliary particles to these structures formed by sampled particles in order to obtain more efficient structures. Based on the newly tree-like structures formed by auxiliary particles and sampled particles, we design a well efficient delayed-weight algorithm with linear computation cost. Experiment results demonstrate that our algorithm can greatly improve the tracking accuracy of a mobile target, compared with bootstrap filter, auxiliary particle filter, and another delayed-weight particle filter.

Beschreibung: The sparsity problem of user-item matrix is a major obstacle to improve the accuracy of the traditional collaborative filtering systems, and, meanwhile, it is also responsible for cold-start problem in the collaborative filtering approaches. In this paper, a three-tier network Architecture, which includes user relationship network, item similarity network, and user-item relationship network, is constructed using comprehensive data among the user-item matrix and the social networks. Based on this framework, a Regression Model Recommendation Approach (RMRA) is established to calculate the correlation score between the test user and test item. The correlation score is used to predict the test user preference for the test item. The RMRA mines the potential information among both social networks and user-item matrix to improve the recommendation accuracy and ease the cold-start problem. We conduct experiment based on KDD 2012 real data set. The result indicates that our algorithm performs superiorly compared to traditional collaborative filtering algorithm.

Beschreibung: We investigate the physical-layer security of a wireless sensor network comprised of a source-destination pair, multiple decode-and-forward (DF) relays, and an eavesdropper. When the relays forward the source signal to the destination, they should dissipate certain power for driving their physical circuits (e.g., amplifiers and filters), in addition to the transmit power required for emitting radio signals. However, no existing work considers the circuit power when exploiting relays for enhancing the wireless security against eavesdropping. We thus propose the relay-selection based cooperative beamforming framework, where partial relays are selected to forward the source signal in a beamforming manner. We present two relay-selection strategies, namely, the exponential-complexity exhaustive search and linear-complexity relay ordering. For comparison purposes, we also evaluate the conventional all-relay based and best-relay based beamforming schemes, where all relays or only the best one is selected to assist the source-destination transmission. It is shown that the proposed beamforming schemes significantly outperform the conventional all-relay and best-relay based beamforming schemes in terms of secrecy capacity. Additionally, the relay-ordering based beamforming scheme almost achieves the same secrecy capacity as the exhaustive-search method, but with a reduced computational complexity.

Beschreibung: For the purpose of balancing energy consumption of nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs for short), a type of energy hole avoiding method based on synchronization of nodes in adjacent annuluses (SNAA for short) is proposed in this paper. The circular network is divided into virtual annuluses with the same width. Nodes are deployed nonuniformly and their number increases in geometric progression from the outer annuluses to the inner ones which could effectively reduce the work load on nodes near the center. Moreover, each node could find its optimal parent by considering the residual energy of each candidate as well as the distance between the two nodes in adjacent annuluses. And on the basis of synchronization of nodes between adjacent annuluses during their transmitting and receiving phases, a sleep scheduling strategy is also proposed to further reduce the energy consumption of nodes in idle listening mode. Simulation results show that SNAA has a superior performance on energy consumption balance compared to the algorithm proposed (Liu et al., 2013; Wu et al., 2008) and it could also mitigate the energy hole problem in WSNs.

Beschreibung: Swarm Intelligence (SI) observes the collective behavior of social insects and other animal societies. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is one of the popular algorithms in SI. In the last decade, several routing protocols based on ACO algorithm have been developed for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Such routing protocols are very flexible in distributed system but generate a lot of additional traffic and thus increase communication overhead. This paper proposes a new routing protocol reducing the overhead to provide energy efficiency. The proposed protocol adopts not only the foraging behavior of ant colony but also the trail-using behavior which has never been adopted in routing. By employing the behaviors, the protocol establishes and manages the routing trails energy efficiently in the whole network. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol has low communication overhead and reduces up to 55% energy consumption compared to the existing ACO algorithm.

Beschreibung: Sensor web systems, cyber-physical systems, and the so-called Internet of Things are concepts that share a set of common characteristics. The nature of such systems is highly dynamic and very heterogeneous and issues such as interoperability, energy consumption, or resource management must be properly managed to ensure the operation of the applications within the required quality of service level. In this context, base technologies such as component based software engineering or Service Oriented Architecture can play a central role. Model driven development and middleware technologies also aid in the design, development, and operation of such systems. This paper presents a middleware solution that provides runtime support for the complete lifecycle management of a system consisting of several concurrent applications running over a set of distributed infrastructure nodes. The middleware builds up on top of a general purpose component model and is driven by a quality of service aware self-configuration algorithm that provides stateful reconfiguration capabilities in face of both internal (application triggered) and external (application unaware) reconfiguration events. The platform has been deployed over an automated warehouse supervision system that serves as a case study.

Beschreibung: As massive distributed sensor devices are integrated into Internet for Internet of things (IoT) and generate tremendous data from simple measurement to rich multimedia information, wireless cellular networks like LTE are enforced to deploy more small cells to accommodate data from the countless IoT devices. In 3GPP Rel-12 specification, dual connectivity helps deploying the small cell eNBs by separating a control and data plane to a macro and small cell, respectively. The dual connectivity also improves per-user throughput and mobility robustness. Meanwhile, dynamic TDD configuration in the Rel-12 can enhance radio resource utilization of TDD-based small cells even though intercell interference can be worse than legacy static configuration within a small cell cluster. In this paper, we propose a heterogeneous cellular IoT network architecture using the aforementioned two small cell features, as well as scheduling algorithms for load balancing in the dual connectivity and for dynamic TDD configuration to mitigate interference in the small cell cluster. We evaluate proposed algorithms using LTE system level simulator and show that our approach improves network throughput.

Beschreibung: An undersampling technique appropriate for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) that can be implemented with low complexity hardware is presented. The OFDM receiver can operate in undersampling mode, 75% of the time. One of the advantages of the proposed scheme is the reduction down to the half of the power consumed by the Analog Digital Converter (ADC) and the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The FFT memory requirements for sample storage can also be reduced and its operating speed can be increased. Simulations were performed for two Quadrature Amplitude Modulation orders (16-QAM and 32-QAM), two options for the FFT size (1024 and 4096), two alternative input symbol structures for the inverse FFT (IFFT), and several sparseness levels and samples substitution options. The Symbol Error Rate (SER) and image reconstruction examples are used to show that a full reconstruction or a very low error can be achieved. Although the proposed undersampling method is evaluated for wired channel, it can also be used without any modification to wireless Single Input Single Output (SISO) systems (with an expected SER degradation). It can also be used with Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems when an appropriate arrangement of the IFFT input symbols is adopted.

Beschreibung: Energy-efficient data aggregation is important for underwater acoustic sensor networks due to its energy constrained character. In this paper, we propose a kind of energy-efficient data aggregation scheme to reduce communication cost and to prolong network lifetime based on distributed compressed sensing theory. First, we introduce a distributed compressed sensing model for a cluster-based underwater acoustic sensor network in which spatial and temporal correlations are both considered. Second, two schemes, namely, BUTM-DCS (block upper triangular matrix DCS) and BDM-DCS (block diagonal matrix DCS), are proposed based on the design of observation matrix with strictly restricted isometric property. Both schemes take multihop underwater acoustic communication cost into account. Finally, a distributed compressed sensing reconstruction algorithm, DCS-SOMP (Simultaneous Orthogonal Matching Pursuit for DCS), is adopted to recover raw sensor readings at the fusion center. We performed simulation experiments on both the synthesized and real sensor readings. The results demonstrate that the new data aggregation schemes can reduce energy cost by more than 95 percent compared with conventional data aggregation schemes when the cluster number is 20.

Beschreibung: Aiming at the synthesis process through the ethylene polymerization by virtue of fluidized bed reactors, this paper proposed a different approach for agglomeration monitoring and early alarming in polymerization reaction with Gaussian test of wavelet packet entropies from low-frequency audible acoustic signals. In comparison to high-frequency acoustic emission signals, audible acoustic signals can reduce the signal bandwidth, simplify the signal processing circuit, facilitate the real-time measurement, and fault detection. Compared with the approach based on regression modeling and pattern recognition, this approach can overcome the defects of false alarm and missing alarm caused by inadequate samples and weak generalization capability of diagnosis model and is easy to be implemented. Experiments in a pilot plant have verified the effectiveness of the approach, and earlier warning could be realized compared with the existing approaches on the production apparatus (material level detection and temperature measurement).

Beschreibung: Sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks are deployed to observe the surroundings for some phenomenon of interest. The fundamental issue in observing such environments is the area coverage which reflects how well the region is monitored. The nonuniform sensor nodes distribution in a certain region caused by random deployment might lead to coverage holes/gaps in the network. One of the solutions to improve area coverage after initial deployment is by sensor nodes mobility. However, the main challenge in this approach is how to increase area coverage with the least energy consumption. This research work aims to improve area coverage with minimal energy consumption and faster convergence rate. The Edge Based Centroid (EBC) algorithm is presented to improve the area coverage with faster convergence rate in a distributed network. The simulation based performance evaluations of the proposed algorithms are carried out in terms of area coverage, convergence rate, and energy efficiency. Compared to the existing works, EBC improved area coverage with faster convergence. It is concluded that the proposed algorithm has improved area coverage with faster convergence and minimal energy consumption.

Beschreibung: In multisink wireless sensor networks, synchronized data collection among multiple sinks is a significant and challenging task. In this paper, we propose an unbalanced threshold based distributed data collection scheme to reconstruct the synchronized sensed data of the whole sensor network in all sinks. The proposed scheme includes the unbalanced threshold based distributed top- query algorithm and the distributed iterative hard thresholding algorithm. By computing unbalanced thresholds and pruning unnecessary element exchanging, each sink can synchronize the top- aggregated values efficiently via the unbalanced threshold based distributed top- query algorithm. After that, the synchronized sensed data of the whole sensor network can be reconstructed through the distributed iterative hard thresholding algorithm in a distributed and cooperative manner. We show through experiments that the proposed scheme can reduce the interaction times and decrease the number of transmitted data and that of computed data compared to the existing schemes while maintaining the similar data reconstruction accuracy. The communication and computational performances of the proposed scheme are also analyzed in detail in the paper.

Beschreibung: Network coding has been confirmed as a potential technology to improve performance of wireless mesh networks (WMNs); network coding has great advantages for sensor networks like minimization of communication needed to collect sensor data and error recovery. A few network coding aware routings have been proposed. However, these mechanisms detect coding opportunities through local traffic pattern checking, which hardly obtains optimal routes. This paper proposes a Distributed Dynamic Memetic Algorithm Based Coding Aware Routing (DDMCAR) for wireless mesh networks, which employs memetic algorithm to optimize routes and coding opportunities. This paper proposes an improvement over GCAR algorithm by employing memetic algorithm and also meme sharing among nodes to increase the chance of finding optimal solution and continuous monitoring and update of meme fitness to achieve a dynamic tracking of network conditions, and finally using most fit memes for load balancing elevating congestion. Through simulations on randomly generated wireless mesh networks, DDMCAR is to be shown to find optimal routes within a short time and achieve more improvements than GCAR.

Beschreibung: The advent of the Internet of things (IoT) is changing the way how we interact with the physical world. However, the current Internet suffers from exponential increase in bandwidth demand. In order to resolve the bandwidth issue, we can consider aerial networks by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or the so-called drones for establishing a three-dimensional mobile network in an ad hoc manner. By deploying a network from the sky, we can use the otherwise idle wireless medium and high mobility free from ground obstacles. Aerial networks are especially effective for supporting the temporary surge of population as well as disaster areas because building an additional network infrastructure requires extensive time. In this paper, we propose an efficient handover mechanism for aerial networks in the three-dimensional space, which significantly differs from the conventional two-dimensional schemes. The proposed scheme adjusts the height of a drone and the distance between the drones. To this end, we use the seamless handover success probability and the false handover initiation probability in order to evaluate the optimal coverage decision algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed scheme is the first attempt for resolving handover of net-drones in the three-dimensional space.

Beschreibung: Information-Centric Networking advocates ubiquitous in-network caching to enhance content distribution. Nonsafety application in vehicular communications is emerging beyond the initial safety application. However, content distribution based on TCP/IP Internet service in vehicular networks suffers from typical issue of low delivery ratio in urban environments, where high buildings block or attenuate the radio propagation as well as short radio coverage range. In order to solve this issue to deliver proximity marketing files, in this paper we propose in-network caching scheme in vehicular networks in accordance with traffic features, in which every vehicle is treated as either a subscriber to request a file or as a cache node to supply other nodes so as to accelerate file transmission effectively. Cache strategy of leave copy everywhere is uncoordinated and distributed, which fits the random and dynamic vehicular network. The performance evaluation is carried out by comparing the proposed scheme with the legacy solution of TCP/IP based scheme using simulation tools of OMNeT++ and Veins and SUMO, which is supplied with real-world urban map associated with random but reasonable traffic routes generated by our designed software for every vehicle. The simulation results validate the proposed scheme in four aspects: robustness resisting obstacle buildings, reliability and scalability in different traffic loads, low utilization ratios of RSUs and Internet resource, and efficiency of cache functions.

Beschreibung: Communication is a prerequisite for any form of social activity, including social networking. Nowadays, communication is not reserved only for humans, but machines can also communicate. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art technology in the area of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication by comparing the M2M concept with other related research paradigms such as Wireless Sensor Networks, Cyber-Physical Systems, Internet of Things, and Human-Agent Collectives. Furthermore, the paper analyses trends in the interconnecting of machines and identifies an evolutionary path in which future (smart) machines will form mostly or completely autonomous communities bonded through social connections. Such communities—machine social networks—will be formed dynamically, just like human connections, and based on the needs of machines, their context, and state of their environment. Finally, the paper outlines the current evolutionary stage and identifies key research challenges of machine social networking.

Beschreibung: Data gathering is one of the most important operations in many wireless sensor networks (WSNs) applications. In order to implement data gathering, a tree structure rooted at the sink is usually defined. In most wireless sensor networks, nodes are powered by batteries with limited energy. Prolonging network lifetime is a critical issue for WSNs. As a technique for signal processing, compressed sensing (CS) is being increasingly applied to wireless sensor networks for saving energy. Compressive sensing can reduce the number of data transmissions and balance the traffic load throughout networks. In this paper, we investigate data gathering in wireless sensor networks using CS and aim at constructing a maximum-lifetime data-gathering tree. The lifetime of the network is defined as the number of data-gathering rounds until the first node depletes its energy. Based on the hybrid-CS data-gathering model, we first construct an arbitrary data-gathering tree and then use the random switching decision and optimal parent node selecting strategy to adjust the load of the bottleneck node and prolong the network lifetime. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms several existing approaches in terms of network lifetime.

Beschreibung: Device-to-Device (D2D) communication enables devices in proximity to establish a wireless direct link. However, these devices may be severely constrained in terms of memory, CPU, and processing resources. Hence, a D2D communication with a constrained device implies new challenges as it does not have the resources required to be secured with standard cryptography. We propose lwAKE for class 0 devices (RFC 7228), which uses one-way cryptographic functions and zero-knowledge proofs to provide mutual authentication and a secure key establishment. We specify the protocol using the High Level Protocol Specification Language and then verify the security properties using the model checkers OFMC and CL-AtSe. The significance of the protocol stands in a key reuse for any successive authentication. Experimental results show that this shortened authentication mode reduces the computational load greatly.

Beschreibung: Following the recent increase in the interest in IoT (Internet of Things) environment, devices that provide various services are being developed. As the diversity, research is required for efficient management of these devices and enhanced security. Previous network environments tend to be dependent on network devices and have difficulties in active processing of variable traffic. Moreover, it is expected that new or variant attacks will increase as packets of various patterns are generated from numerous devices, and hence immense research effort is required in solving this problem. In order to address such problems, this study aims to investigate strategies for establishing a security framework for the configuration of a software-defined IoT environment and efficient provision of security services. Moreover, the service to reduce the overhead involved in security service provision is configured, and a simple test is conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed model.

Beschreibung: In dense wireless sensor network, we usually remove the unnecessary communication links by topology control in order to get an energy efficient routing. The channel environment becomes more complex, which results in difficulty to control topology under a mass node distribution according to the accurate interference model. This paper introduces the concept of a guard region, defined as the region around each receiver where interfering transmissions are inhibited to make the topology control. Based on the hard-core process in stochastic geometry, the scheduling of interfering node in guard region and the density of active sensors are achieved theoretically. Then we do the analysis of coverage of receiver; the interference around receiver is computed as main interference in guard region and secondary interference outside guard region. Finally, through Monte-Carlo simulation, the topology model based on guard region is proved to be correct and the influences on coverage under different parameters are analyzed.

Beschreibung: The Internet of Things (IoT) is involved in dealing with physical items, gadgets, vehicles, structures, and different things that are inserted into hardware, programming, sensors, and system availability, which empowers these items to gather and trade information. Improving extraction of sensor-based data for energy awareness and then annotating it and converting it into semantically enabled form for analyzing results with the use of improved tools and applications are the focus of this research. However, as the amount of real time data gets huge, it becomes difficult to track results when needed at once. Reconciliation of heterogeneous information sources into an interlinked data is a standout among the most pertinent difficulties for some learning based systems these days. This paper forms suitable elements by a methodology for adjustment of heterogeneous sensor-based Web assets, where different tools and applications like weather detection for self-observing and self-diagnostics use dispersed human specialists and learning. The proposed general model uses a capability of the Semantic Web innovation and concentrates on the part of a semantic adjustment of existing broadly utilized models of information representation to Resource Description Framework (RDF) based semantically rich arrangement. This work is valuable for sorting out and inquiry of the detecting information in the Internet of Things.

Beschreibung: Intruders detection is one of the very important applications in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Sometimes detecting intruders is not sufficient; distinguishing whether an intruder is legal or illegal is necessary. Since -barrier coverage is widely used in detecting intruders, a barrier construction algorithm is needed, which can not only detect an intruder but also judge an illegal intruder. An intruder is defined as illegal if and only if it crosses straightly through the monitored region from the special side to another side. On the contrary, it is a legal intruder. To detect an intruder and distinguish whether the intruder is legal or illegal, a strong -barrier coverage algorithm is proposed. The strong -barrier coverage is a local barrier constructing algorithm and can detect any intruder crossing the -barrier with a full probability. The strong -barrier coverage detects all intruders penetrating the annular region for times. What is more, the proposed strong -barrier algorithm can provide a reliable judgement on whether an intruder is legal or illegal, and the constructed -barrier coverage is different from the traditional one-way barrier coverage using binary barriers that are intersected but not overlapped. Some simulation tests show that the proposed algorithm can construct strong -barrier coverage very well.

Beschreibung: To enhance the efficiency of pavement roughness measurement and reduce the cost, an integrated and wireless transfer based measuring system was developed. The proposed system can obtain vehicles status and location data via wireless acceleration sensors and GPS, calculate the international roughness index (IRI) by power spectral density analysis, and provide reports automatically. This paper presents the architecture of the proposed system, consisting of data collector, car mounted terminal, and information platform. Two wireless communication systems (ZigBee and 3G modules) were utilized to transfer the data and construct network between the components. The information platform implemented an acceleration-IRI model to calculate IRI, and a GPS based distance algorithm was employed to segment the measured road per 1 km. The various results are saved in an Oracle database, displayed on the digital map and made available to the mobile terminal. Several field tests of the prototype system were conducted in Huzhou, Zhejiang province in China. The results show that, compared to the laser roughness testing method, the relative error of this proposed system is less than 10%, which verifies the accuracy, effectiveness, and reliability of the proposed measuring system.

Beschreibung: In recent decades, the main data traffic of mobile communication is based on the RF technology. Even though the efficiency from optimization for utilization or reuse is applied, there is a limitation of increased traffic demand of RF communication. Visible light communication (VLC) is a new technology that can cooperate with RF to address this limitation. The standard for VLC was published in 2011 as IEEE 802.15.7, which defined the specifications for the MAC layer and the PHY layer. This standard was one of the first for this technology. The decoded operation from emitting light at the receiver in IEEE 802.15.7 is mainly based on the photodetector. However, with the development of image sensors (matrix of photodiodes) on smart devices, the amendment of IEEE 802.15.7 specification is considered. The extension will focus mainly on image sensor communications, named optical camera communications (OCC). In this paper, we analyze the performance of a camera communications system based on different types of image sensor architecture. Then, we suggest OCC-ID, a new application for broadcasting service using camera communications and the cloud model. The proposed architecture is a typical deployment scenario of camera communications.

Beschreibung: With the rapid development of WLAN infrastructure, fingerprint-based positioning using signal strength has become a promising localization solution in indoor space. Commonly fingerprint-based positioning methods face two challenges in large indoor space, one is floor recognition in large building with multifloor, and the other is signal strength variance due to heterogeneous devices and environmental factors. In this paper, we propose a novel two-stage positioning approach to address these challenges of fingerprint-based positioning methods in large indoor space. Firstly, we design a floor-level recognition feature based on WiFi access points and the RSS values to recognize floor. For solving the signal strength variance problem, we propose a new metric to capture the similarity of location fingerprints probability distribution using KL Divergence. To demonstrate the utility of our approach, we have performed comprehensive experiments in a large indoor building.

Beschreibung: Considering a nonregenerative untrusted relay network, we investigate three different secure transmission strategies, for example, noncooperative strategy, conventional amplify-and-forward (AF) strategy, and cooperative jamming (CJ) strategy. To thoroughly assess the secrecy performance achieved by the three strategies, we derive the closed-form expressions for the connection outage probability and secrecy outage probability regarding each strategy. Based on these expressions, the reliability and security tradeoff (RST) is examined to facilitate the design of the transmitting parameters. We then present the closed-form expression for the effective secrecy throughput (EST) and characterize the overall efficiency of these transmission strategies. Furthermore, we conduct the asymptotic analysis for the secrecy throughput, which enables us to determine the optimal transmission strategy under different scenarios. Our analytical and numerical results demonstrate that compared with the noncooperative and AF strategies, the CJ strategy possesses the best performance in terms of RST. Additionally, we also find that the EST performance of the AF strategy is nearly invariable when the quality of the second hop changes.

Beschreibung: As the technology of the Internet of Things (IoT) becomes more widely used in large-scale monitoring networks, this paper proposes an optimized obtaining strategy (OFS) for large-scale sensor monitoring networks. First, because of the large-scale features of sensor node network, this paper proposes a large-scale monitoring network area clustering optimization strategy. Second, based on the characteristics of regular changes in the sensed data in large-scale monitoring networks, this paper proposes a strategy for acquiring sensor data based on an adaptive frequency conversion. The OFS optimization strategy can prolong network lifetime, reduce the transmission bandwidth resources, and reduce average energy consumption of the cluster head and network energy consumption.

Beschreibung: This work describes an experimental study on the possibilities of harvesting energy from tree trunks in order to power sensor nodes for environmental monitoring, particularly in wild forests. As the trunk of a living tree can be divided into isothermal subvolumes, which are generally referred to as annual rings, and the trunk is a good heat storage material, depending on the tree dimensions and its species, it can potentially offer different temperature gradients according to the tree trunk depths. The hypothesis is to consider the application of this temperature gradient on the faces of a Peltier cell to obtain electrical energy. In order to evaluate this hypothesis, a wireless sensor network was developed for measuring internal temperature of trunks from different trees. The experimental results show that it is possible to obtain a sufficient temperature gradient to harvest energy from tree trunks. Additionally, it is also shown that it is possible to harvest thermal energy during the day and during the night while photovoltaic cell only works under sunlight.

Beschreibung: This paper presents characteristics of the Frame Error Rate versus Signal to Noise Ratio obtained from Smart Lighting LV network. These characteristics are the results of carrying out many field-trials in three locations. During the one-year tests period lighting systems evolved from the traditional, gas-discharge not individually dimmable system to LED or gas-discharge Smart Lighting system controlled with the use of PLC technology every lamp individually. A different influence of the frame length on the characteristic for the gas-discharge and LED LV networks led to examining the bit errors distribution. The bit errors distribution characteristics of the narrowband PLC transmission over the Smart Metering LV network are also presented in this paper. All the presented data in this work are the results of the long time field-trials, which were verified in the lab conditions.

Beschreibung: This paper presents an integrated modeling method providing superior Quality of Service (QoS) for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) which is suitable for smart distribution grid (SDG) communication. Traditional QoS model based on IEEE802.15.4 protocol cannot meet the communication requirements of multipriority data in smart distribution grid. In order to meet the specification of power system communication, a new QoS-enabled medium access control (MAC) model based on unfair competition channel access mechanism (UCCAM) is developed in this paper. The proposed model can ensure that the communication system of WSN provides different Qualities of Service for different priority data. According to different requirements for the communication time, the data of SDG are divided into three types: high priority, middle priority, and low priority data. The state transition of buffering queue data in node is described by a three-dimensional Markov chain model. Delay time, effective throughput rate, and channel collision rate models are developed, respectively, to evaluate communication performance of WSN applied in smart distribution grid. The simulation results show that the proposed model can provide different Qualities of Service for different priority data and is more efficient than the IEEE802.15.4e standard and the traditional methods.

Beschreibung: Employing user access patterns to develop a prefetching scheme can effectively improve system I/O performance and reduce user access latency. For massive spatiotemporal data, traditional pattern mining methods fail to directly reflect the spatiotemporal correlation and transition rules of user access, resulting in poor prefetching performance. This paper proposed a prefetching scheme based on spatial-temporal attribute prediction, named STAP. It maps the history of user access requests to the spatiotemporal attribute domain by analyzing the characteristics of spatiotemporal data in a smart city. According to the spatial locality and time stationarity of user access, correlation analysis is performed and variation rules are identified for the history of user access requests. Further, the STAP scheme mines the user access patterns and constructs a predictive function to predict the user’s next access request. Experimental results show that the prefetching scheme is simple yet effective; it achieves a prediction accuracy of 84.3% for access requests and reduces the average data access response time by 44.71% compared with the nonprefetching scheme.

Beschreibung: ABE provides a good way for access controlling in cloud computing. However, in many application scenarios, access policies for encryption also should be protected since they may directly contain sensitive information. For example, in smart grid, the access policies may contain the private information about underlying data, data owner or the data recipients, and disclosing some sensitive access policies could result in negative publicity, or loss of market revenue. In this paper, we present a CP-ABE scheme with hidden policy from Waters efficient construction. In our scheme, the access policy is hidden by using the composite order bilinear groups and can be expressed with LSSS. Our scheme is proved CPA secure under four statics assumptions.

Beschreibung: With the application of Internet of Things and services to manufacturing, the fourth stage of industrialization, referred to as Industrie 4.0, is believed to be approaching. For Industrie 4.0 to come true, it is essential to implement the horizontal integration of inter-corporation value network, the end-to-end integration of engineering value chain, and the vertical integration of factory inside. In this paper, we focus on the vertical integration to implement flexible and reconfigurable smart factory. We first propose a brief framework that incorporates industrial wireless networks, cloud, and fixed or mobile terminals with smart artifacts such as machines, products, and conveyors. Then, we elaborate the operational mechanism from the perspective of control engineering, that is, the smart artifacts form a self-organized system which is assisted with the feedback and coordination blocks that are implemented on the cloud and based on the big data analytics. In addition, we outline the main technical features and beneficial outcomes and present a detailed design scheme. We conclude that the smart factory of Industrie 4.0 is achievable by extensively applying the existing enabling technologies while actively coping with the technical challenges.

Beschreibung: With the increasing requirement of localization services in indoor environment, indoor localization techniques have drawn a lot of attention. In recent years, fingerprinting localization techniques have been proved to be effective in indoor localization tasks. Due to the complexity and variability of indoor environment, some traditional geometric localization techniques based on time of arrival (TOA), received signal strength (RSS), or direction of arrival (DOA) may cause big position errors. Unlike common geometric localization methods, fingerprinting localization techniques estimate the position of target by creating a pattern matching model or regression model for the measurement. Therefore, a suitable learning model is the key of a fingerprinting location system. This paper presents a fingerprinting based localization technique using deep belief network (DBN) and ultrawideband (UWB) signals in an office environment. Some location-dependent parameters extracted from channel impulse response (CIR) are used as signatures to build the fingerprinting database. The construction of DBN which is based on the fingerprinting database is also discussed in this paper. Experiment results show that, with appropriate fingerprinting database and model structure, the location system can get desired accuracy.

Beschreibung: In heterogeneous scenarios, nodes greatly differ with respect to their capabilities and mobility patterns. Moreover, episodic connectivity in opportunistic networks further aggravates the problem of finding a suitable next-hop to obviate unnecessary utilization of network resources. In this paper, we present a Multiattribute Routing Scheme (MARS) based on “Simple Multiattribute Rating Technique” (SMART) that collects samples of vital information about a node’s different characteristics. This stochastic picture of a node behavior in multiple dimensions is then effectively employed in calculating its next-hop fitness. We also devise a method based on learning rules of neural networks which dynamically determines relative importance of each dimension to maximize next-hop utility of a node. With simulations, using synthetic and real mobility traces against well-known utility-based schemes, we show that MARS can achieve better delivery ratios despite introducing limited redundancy within the network.

Beschreibung: Technology has recently been developed which offers an excellent opportunity to design systems with the ability to help people in their own houses. In particular, assisting elderly people in their environments is something that can significantly improve their quality of life. However, helping elderly people outside their usual environment is also necessary, to help them to carry out daily tasks like shopping. In this paper we present a person-following shopping cart assistance robot, capable of helping elderly people to carry products in a supermarket. First of all, the paper presents a survey of related systems that perform this task, using different approaches, such as attachable modules and computer vision. After that, the paper describes in detail the proposed system and its main features. The cart uses ultrasonic sensors and radio signals to provide a simple and effective person localization and following method. Moreover, the cart can be connected to a portable device like a smartphone or tablet, thus providing ease of use to the end user. The prototype has been tested in a grocery store, while simulations have been done to analyse its scalability in larger spaces where multiple robots could coexist.

Beschreibung: With the rapid development in mobile Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), it has become very essential to focus on the efficiency in performance of small sensing nodes operating in WSNs. While designing a routing protocol for mobile sensor nodes, the quality parameters like end-to-end delays and routing overhead are always considered. Moreover, the nodes in wirelessly connected mobile networks consume considerable power on routing more than other functionalities. Any modification in a standard routing protocol can also affect routing overhead, end-to-end delays, and energy consumption of nodes. In this paper a new hybrid routing protocol, named as State-Aware Link Maintenance Approach (SALMA), is introduced which is based on Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) and Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocols. The work also focuses on the activeness of nodes in the network operations and defines three states of nodes, that is, white, gray, and black. The work concludes that the proposed protocol gives improvements in some quality of service metrics like lower delay than DSR, lower routing overhead than OLSR, and lesser energy consumption by the network nodes.

Beschreibung: Rare events detection is one of the main applications in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and is currently a central concern of a vast literature. Compressed Sensing (CS) theory has been proved to be quite adapted to this objective. Although this is not the first work on applying CS to sparse events detection in WSN, it is the first to highly justify the validity of the targets detection and counting problem formulation. In order to enhance the CS recovery capacity in WSN, this work considers an approach based on a coherence reduction of the sensing matrix premised on the transmitted power control (PC). Simulation results prove that, under the constraint of equal power consumption, the detection and counting performance is improved when the proposed power control scheme is employed compared to the case without PC.

Beschreibung: To combat severe intersymbol interference incurred by multipath propagation of sound waves in the underwater acoustic environment, we introduce an iterative equalization and decoding scheme by iteratively exchanging soft information between a low-density parity check (LDPC) decoder and a decision feedback equalizer. We apply extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts to analyze performance of LDPC codes over the acoustic multipath channel. Furthermore, using differential evolution technique, we develop an EXIT-aided method to optimize LDPC codes for the underwater acoustic channel. Design examples are presented for two different realizations of the underwater acoustic channel that are generated by an acoustic ray tracing model. Computer simulations show that the optimized LDPC codes outperform its regular counterpart or Turbo codes under the same coding rate and block length, with gains of 1.0 and 0.8 dB, respectively, at the bit error rate of 10−5.

Beschreibung: Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTNs) have been attracting great interest from research community, where data communication naturally does not require contemporaneous end-to-end connectivity. Although they are suffering from a large variation of network topology, numerous previous routing protocols proposed for DTNs still make effort to qualify delivery potential, via network topology information. Geographic routing is an alternative, conceptually, by relying on the geographic information instead of topological information. In the literature, since this technique branch has not been extensively investigated in DTNs, our paper identifies the motivation and challenges for applying geographic routing in DTNs with the state of the art. Also, we highlight the future research directions for this branch.

Beschreibung: Network reliability of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is difficult to be evaluated because of its complexity, multistates, and dynamic characteristics. To satisfy the user’s need of reliability evaluation for network transmission we propose some evaluation models and a dynamical evaluation framework. The evaluation models are mission-oriented and based on transmission paths (uplink and downlink). The dynamic evaluation framework can be on-demand customized and it will be autoupdated once the communication environment changes or the nodes fail. Finally, we simulated clustered and mesh WSNs with NS-2. Simulation result shows that the proposed evaluation framework was effective and accurate.

Beschreibung: This paper proposes different low-level microarchitectural designs and frameworks for real-time monitoring and efficient control of on-chip sensor network for field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The main goals are to design low power, low-cost, and highly accurate monitoring and control mechanism using autonomous sensor agents and to dynamically reconfigure control of on-chip sensor networks by FPGAs. By collecting dynamic and real-time monitoring parameters such as voltage and temperature, the system becomes self-aware and is able to improve the utilization of FPGA resources and power consumption. The FPGA synthesis, place and route, and implementation were performed for the proposed design. The results after synthesis and implementation show a significant low usage of FPGA logic resources and efficient power consumption of all on-chip sensor components compared with previous approaches. Furthermore, the experimental results from the FPGA-measured on-chip sensor readings show high precision and accuracy in the measured voltage and temperature. Setting the dynamic reconfiguration refresh time at 1000 ms produces highly accurate FPGA-measured on-chip sensor readings compared with those at 100 and 500 ms. The proposed design technique and framework will assist network engineers and system designers by providing flexible and efficient real-time monitoring and control design of large and complex on-chip sensor networks and remote-sensing applications.

Beschreibung: In the body sensor networks (BSN), sensor nodes transmit data to remote receiving terminal via sink node. During the process of data aggregation, interference and self-similar character of wireless business have significant influence on traffic queue performance of sink node. To balance traffic quality of service (QoS) requirement and system present available resource and decide optimum resource distribution project. Hence, a complex function of sink node cache length, distributed channel rate and packet loss probability, and queue delay is built in this paper. Based on the function, by combining multiple target optimizing method and considering joint constraint of queue delay and packet loss probability, we proposed an admission control method based on traffic aggregation QoS constraint. In a BSN consisting of a large amount of sensor nodes, by admission control of sink node, reasonable acceptance of new nodes, and distribution sink node resource, the method we proposed can meet needs of important parameters in WSN design.

Beschreibung: Currently, many services benefit greatly from the availability of accurate tracking. Tracking in wireless sensor networks remains a challenging issue. Most tracking methods often require a large number of anchors and do not take advantage of potential localization information, leading to poor accuracy. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a Novel Monte Carlo-based Tracking (NMCT) algorithm with area-based and neighbor-based filtering, which fully extracts the proximity information embedded in the neighborhood sensing. We describe the entire system design in detail and conduct extensive simulations. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the typical schemes under a wide range of conditions.

Beschreibung: Multipath routing is an alternative routing technique, which uses redundant paths to deliver data from source to destination. Compared to single path routing protocols, it can address reliability, delay, and energy consumption issues. Thus, multipath routing is a potential technique to overcome the long propagation delay and adverse link condition in underwater environment. However, there are still some problems in multipath routing. For example, the multiple paths may interfere with each other and arouse large end-to-end delay difference amongst multiple paths. This paper proposes a novel multipath routing structure and a conflict-free algorithm based on TDMA scheme. The forwarding nodes are selected based on the propagation delay and location information. This special multiple routing structure not only can ensure parallel multiple transmission without collision, but also can get a small end-to-end delay difference amongst multiple paths. Simulation results show that the multipath routing scheme proposed in this paper outperforms the traditional strategy.

Beschreibung: An innovative paradigm named Cooperative Cognitive Maritime Cyber Physical Systems (CCMCPSs) is developed to achieve high-speed and low-cost communication services. The analysis of the available white space at sea, as well as the framework, is presented. Specifically, a bilevel game with two stages of PUs-to-SUs (primary users to secondary users) and SUs-to-SUs is proposed, to address the resource allocation issue of Decode-and-Forward (DF) relay mode with maximal-ratio combining (MRC) receiving mode in destination. Stackelberg game with priority is employed between PU and SUs, while a symmetrical system model is considered among SUs-to-SUs. The game theoretic procedure that converges to Nash equilibrium based on the utility and payoff function is illustrated. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed strategy could effectively increase the throughput as well as the payoffs of the system.

Beschreibung: Combinatorial auction is a popular approach for resource allocation in cloud computing. One of the challenges in resource allocation is that QoS (Quality of Service) constraints are satisfied and provider’s profit is maximized. In order to increase the profit, the penalty cost for SLA (Service Level Agreement) violations needs to be reduced. We consider execution time constraint as SLA constraint in combinatorial auction system. In the system, we determine winners at each bidding round according to the job’s urgency based on execution time deadline, in order to efficiently allocate resources and reduce the penalty cost. To analyze the performance of our mechanism, we compare the provider’s profit and success rate of job completion with conventional mechanism using real workload data.

Beschreibung: The present work focuses on predicting users’ next place of visit using their past tweets. We hypothesize that tweets of the person have predictive power on his location and therefore can be used to predict his next place of visit. This problem is important for location based advertising and recommender based services. To predict the next place of visit, we calculate the probabilities of visiting different types of places using bank of binary classifiers and Markov models. More specifically, we train bank of binary classifiers on past tweets and calculated the probabilities of visiting next places. Since bank of binary classifiers is based on a bag-of-words model, to account for time of last visited place and place itself, we built Markov models for different time duration to calculate probabilities of visiting next place. Empirical evaluation shows that by combining the probabilities obtained from bank of binary classifiers and Markov models the accuracy of predicting next place increased from 65% to 80%.

Beschreibung: Demand response (DR) is a major contributor to grid stabilization during peak times. As the scope and functions of DR increase, DR participation of residential customers has attracted great attention. The main issue of DR design for the residential sector is to build an integrated network for exchange of DR signals between the utility operator and home users who want to participate in DR services at various locations. In this paper, we introduce an automated residential DR model based on advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) network. The internationally recognized standard protocol, known as the open automated demand response version 2.0 (OpenADR 2.0), is applied to realize a fully automated DR (ADR). In order to utilize existing AMI devices as ADR resources, the smart meter is modified while retaining current structure and functions, and various ADR devices are developed based on OpenADR 2.0 protocol. Simulation and demonstration tests are conducted to confirm conformance of the protocol and to verify load variations of home appliances under our ADR model. Beschreibung: RFID is one of the most prominent identification schemes in the field of pervasive systems. Nonline of sight capability makes RFID systems much better choice than its contended systems (such as barcode, magnetic tape, etc.). Since the RFID uses wireless channel for communication with its associated devices, there should be some optimal encryption methods to secure the communicating data from adversaries. Several researchers have proposed ultralightweight mutual authentication protocols (UMAPs) to secure the RFID systems in cost effective manner. Unfortunately most of the previously proposed UMAPs are later found to be vulnerable against various desynchronization, Denial of Service (DoS), traceability, and full disclosure attacks. In this paper, we present a more sophisticated UMAP to provide Strong Authentication and Strong Integrity (SASI) using recursive hash function. The proposed protocol incorporates only simple bitwise logical operators XOR, Rot, and nontriangular function (recursive hash) in its design, which can be efficiently implemented with a low cost passive RFID tag. The performance analysis of the protocol proves the conformation of the proposed protocol with EPC-C1G2 passive tags. In addition to privacy and security, small chip area (miniaturization) is another design constraint (which is mandatory requirement for a protocol to be considered as ultralightweight authentication protocol). We have also proposed and implemented the efficient hardware design of the proposed protocol for EPC-C1G2 tags. Both the FPGA and ASIC implementation flows have been adopted. The FPGA flow is primarily used to validate the functionality of the proposed hardware design whereas ASIC flow (using TSMC 0.35 μm library) is used to validate the gate count. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first FPGA and ASIC implementation of any ultralightweight RFID authentication protocol.

Beschreibung: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been deployed for many applications of target detection, such as intrusion detection and wildlife protection. In these applications, the first step is to detect whether the target is present or not. However, most of the existing work uses the “simple disk model” as signal model, which may not capture the sensing environment. In this work, we utilize a more realistic signal model to describe sensing process of sensors. On the other hand, the “majority rule” is widely used to make the final decision, which may not obtain the true judgment. To this end, we utilize a more realistic signal model and also use a probabilistic decision model to make the final decision. Moreover, we propose a probabilistic detection algorithm in which all sensors’ local measurement values are fully used. This algorithm does not need any artificial threshold compared with traditional algorithms. It makes the most of spatiotemporal information to obtain the final decision. For the spatial perspective, sensors are distributed in different locations cooperating with each other. Meanwhile, for the temporal perspective, multiround subdecisions are fused. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by extensive simulation results, which show high detection probabilities and low false alarm probabilities.

Beschreibung: This work proposes a comprehensive combinational algorithm for sensor layout to solve the problem that unreasonable sensor layout affects the effectiveness of data selection and reduces the accuracy of monitoring system in healthy monitoring system of wind turbine blade structure. This algorithm integrates the advantages of kinetic energy method, effective independence method, modal assurance criterion (MAC), and many other optimal methods. In order to avoid information redundancy caused by partial concentration of test spots, Euclidean distance was introduced as the iteration condition of algorithm. Finite element simulation and experimental results show that the layout obtained by this method is beneficial to improving signal-to-noise ratio and can maximize the crossing angle between target vibration modes. Therefore, relatively complete characteristics of actual wind turbine blade structure can be obtained.

Beschreibung: Urban road travel time is an important parameter to reflect the traffic flow state. Besides, it is one of the important parameters for the traffic management department to formulate guidance measures, provide traffic information service, and improve the efficiency of the detectors group. Therefore, it is crucial to improve the forecast accuracy of travel time in traffic management practice. Based on the analysis of the change-point and the ARIMA model, this paper constructs a model for the massive data collected by loop detectors to forecast travel time parameters. Firstly, the preprocessing algorithm for the data of loop detectors is given, and the calculating model of the travel time is studied. Secondly, a change-point detection algorithm is designed to classify the sequence of large number of travel time data items into several patterns. Then, this paper establishes a forecast model to forecast travel time in different patterns using the improved ARIMA model. At last, the model is verified by simulation and the verification results of several groups of examples show that the model has high accuracy and practicality.

Beschreibung: We present a Markovian decision process (MDP) framework for multihop wireless sensor networks (MHWSNs) to bound the network performance of both energy constrained (EC) networks and energy harvesting (EH) networks, both with and without relay cooperation. The model provides the fundamental performance limit that a MHWSN can theoretically achieve, under the general constraints from medium access control, routing, and energy harvesting. We observe that the analyses for EC and EH networks fall into two branches of MDP theory, which are finite-horizon process and infinite-horizon process, respectively. The performance metrics for EC and EH networks are different. For EC networks, an appropriate metric is the network lifetime; for EH networks, an appropriate metric is, for example, the network throughput. To efficiently solve the models with high dimension, for the EC networks, we propose a novel computational algorithm by taking advantage of the stochastic shortest path structure of the problem; for the EH networks, we propose a dual linear programming based algorithm by considering the sparsity of the transition matrix. Under the unified MDP framework, numerical results demonstrate the advantages of cooperation for the optimal performance, in both EC and EH networks.

Beschreibung: Sharp increase of video traffic is expected to account for the majority of traffic in future 5G networks. This paper introduces the SELFNET 5G project and describes the video streaming use case that will be used to demonstrate the self-optimising capabilities of SELFNET’s autonomic network management framework. SELFNET’s framework will provide an advanced self-organizing network (SON) underpinned by seamless integration of Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and network intelligence. The self-optimisation video streaming use case is going beyond traditional quality of service approaches to network management. A set of monitoring and analysis components will facilitate a user-oriented, quality of experience (QoE) and energy-aware approach. Firstly, novel SON-Sensors will monitor both traditional network state metrics and new video and energy related metrics. The combination of these low level metrics provides highly innovative health of network (HoN) composite metrics. HoN composite metrics are processed via autonomous decisions not only maintaining but also proactively optimising users’ video QoE while minimising the end-to-end energy consumption of the 5G network. This contribution provided a detailed technical overview of this ambitious use case.
