Description: 〈h3〉Abstract〈/h3〉 〈p〉We report on continuous-wave and pulsed laser characteristics of Yb:Y〈sub〉2〈/sub〉O〈sub〉3〈/sub〉 transparent ceramic at cryogenic temperatures. A VBG stabilized pump diode emitting at 976 nm which matches with the zero-phonon line of the gain media was employed. At 100 K, a maximum continuous-wave output power of 12 W, around three times than that of 300 K and a slope efficiency of 54.4%, 2.4 times than that of 300 K was achieved using an output coupler transmission of 50% with respect to incident power. In passive Q-switched regime, using a Cr:YAG saturable absorber with an initial transmission of 85%, a maximum energy of 0.46 mJ per pulse was obtained with a peak power of 1.64 kW at a repetition rate of 19.6 kHz.〈/p〉

Description: 〈h3〉Abstract〈/h3〉 〈p〉Laser-induced incandescence at high-repetition rates can in principle be used to resolve the temporal evolution of soot processes. The intrusive character of this technique, however, requires due care of historical effects associated with multiple exposures of individual soot particles to laser light. On the other hand, repetitive heating and cooling opens up an independent, acoustic detection channel. We illustrate a photo-acoustic soot volume fraction measurement, and show that the comparison to simultaneously recorded laser-induced incandescence provides qualitative information on soot growth. Experiments are performed on a propane-fueled, co-flow stabilized diffusion flame, and signals are collected at varying heights above the burner deck. Results show a clear correlation between the laser-induced incandescence and photo-acoustic signals; small deviations are interpreted as a qualitative indicator for the particle size.〈/p〉

Description: 〈h3〉Abstract〈/h3〉 〈p〉It was found that SnO addition widens the emission spectrum of Bi:GeO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 glass and shifts it in the short-wavelength direction. This emission band overlaps the spectral gap at 1540–1600 nm where no laser action in Bi-activated materials has been obtained yet. The amplifiers covering this gap may be of great interest for telecommunication systems of the next generation. The changes in the spectra and in lifetimes give a reason to assume that a variety of new types of bismuth emission centers are formed in these glasses.〈/p〉

Description: 〈h3〉Abstract〈/h3〉 〈p〉Analytical formulas of the propagation parameters (including the angular width and propagation factor) of the Lommel–Gaussian beams in atmospheric turbulence are derived on the basis of extended Huygens–Fresnel integral and second-order moments of Wigner distribution function. Evolution properties of the propagation parameters of Lommel–Gaussian beams propagating in atmospheric turbulence are investigated numerically. The results show that the Lommel–Gaussian beams are less affected with smaller structure constant, as well as bigger orbital angular momentum quantum number, wavelength, and inner scale. Furthermore, the beam propagation is independent of the modulus of the asymmetry parameter. The results may be useful for the practical application of the Lommel–Gaussian beam in free space optical communications.〈/p〉

Description: 〈h3〉Abstract〈/h3〉 〈p〉Efficient passively Q-switched laser operation of Yb:LaCa〈sub〉4〈/sub〉O(BO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉)〈sub〉3〈/sub〉 crystal was realized at the long-wavelength region of 1071–1080 nm, with 2D Bi〈sub〉2〈/sub〉Te〈sub〉3〈/sub〉 topological insulator acting as saturable absorber. With an incident pump power of 6.89 W, 1.76 W of pulsed output power was generated at 140 kHz with a slope efficiency of 38%; the corresponding pulse energy, duration, and peak power were, respectively, 12.6 μJ, 288 ns, and 43.8 W.〈/p〉

Description: 〈h3〉Abstract〈/h3〉 〈p〉This work discusses the fabrication of a nickel phosphate [Ni〈sub〉3〈/sub〉(PO〈sub〉4〈/sub〉)〈sub〉2〈/sub〉]-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) thin film and its application as an optical modulator for the generation of Q-switched pulses in the C-band region. A 50 cm long erbium-doped fiber with absorption coefficients of 250 dB/m and 16 dB/m at 980 nm and 1530 nm respectively was used as the gain medium. The modulation depth, saturable intensity and non-saturable loss were measured to be 56.43%, 0.15 kW/cm〈sup〉2〈/sup〉 and 43.57%, respectively. Stable self-starting Q-switched pulses were observed at 1561.1 nm at an output power of 2.34 mW, a pulse width of 1.08 μs, and a repetition rate of 86.21 kHz, at the maximum pump power of 280.50 mW. The generated output was highly stable with a signal-to-noise ratio of 54.57 dB. The work undertaken has demonstrated the potential of Ni〈sub〉3〈/sub〉(PO〈sub〉4〈/sub〉)〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 nanoparticles as an optically active material due to its excellent nonlinear saturable absorption characteristics, which translates to good laser performance.〈/p〉

Description: 〈h3〉Abstract〈/h3〉 〈p〉In this paper, a novel structure with coupling hybrid graphene metamaterial, which can achieve a tunable EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency)-like effect in two perpendicular polarization directions is proposed. The structure is comprised of a vertical graphene strip and a pair of H-shape graphene strips, and the H-shape strips are placed alternately on both sides of vertical graphene strip. The EIT-like effects of the proposed structure are simulated and demonstrated using finite-difference time-domain method. The simulation results show that the proposed analogue can achieve dynamically tunable EIT-like effects not by re-fabricating the size of structure but by changing the Fermi level of graphene, furthermore, the above EIT-like effects can be realized in two perpendicular polarization directions. In addition, the mechanism of EIT-like effects and the impact of relaxation time on transparency windows are also demonstrated and analyzed. This work demonstrates a novel EIT-like phenomenon based on metamaterial and opens a new perspective in EIT effect applications.〈/p〉

Description: 〈h3〉Abstract〈/h3〉 〈p〉A two-color femtosecond pump beam (800 and 1200 nm) and a one-color femtosecond probe beam (267 nm) were focused into a hydrogen gas to generate high-order Raman sidebands in the spectral region of 172–343 nm. The efficiency of frequency conversion to neighboring Stokes/anti-Stokes emission was 18%. Simultaneously, vacuum-ultraviolet stimulated emission was observed at 154.2 nm with the assistance of four-wave Raman mixing. This observation was explained as a Lyman transition (〈em〉B〈/em〉 〈sup〉1〈/sup〉Σ〈span〉 〈sub〉u〈/sub〉 〈sup〉+〈/sup〉 〈/span〉 → 〈em〉X〈/em〉 〈sup〉1〈/sup〉Σ〈span〉 〈sub〉g〈/sub〉 〈sup〉+〈/sup〉 〈/span〉) of the hydrogen.〈/p〉

Description: 〈h3〉Abstract〈/h3〉 〈p〉An ultraviolet-visible laser absorption-scattering technique (UV-LAS) was developed for obtaining the evaporation characteristics of binary-component fuel spray. 〈em〉P〈/em〉-xylene and fluorobenzene were selected as the substitutes for low and high boiling points components, respectively, in a binary fuel spray. The molar absorption coefficients (MAC) of 〈em〉p〈/em〉-xylene and fluorobenzene at 266 nm wavelength were measured with relative uncertainty of 2.8% in a calibration system, which was designed to facilitate control of the mixture temperature and vapor concentration. UV-LAS was applied to a quantitative detection of vapor concentration distributions of each component in a binary-component fuel spray injected into a high-temperature and high-pressure constant volume chamber. A difference in spatial stratification of each component fuel in the spray due to their volatility difference was observed. An uncertainty estimation of UV-LAS for binary-component fuel spray was performed, and the results show that the maximum uncertainty is less than 9.8% in measurement of vapor mass.〈/p〉

Description: 〈h3〉Abstract〈/h3〉 〈p〉The innovative two-step passivation by octadecanethiol (ODT) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and the following silicon dioxide (SiO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉) deposition was used for the type-II InAs/GaSb superlattice photodetector. To understand the mechanism of passivation, the (100) GaSb surface covered with the ODT and, for comparison, with the biphenyl thiol (BPT), was characterized by the atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and contact angle analysis. The results of the study indicated the presence of the homogeneous both the ODT and the BPT monolayers; however, the ODT SAMs were more stable. Therefore, the ODT-based wet treatment was used in the two-step passivation resulting in a reduction of the dark current by one order of magnitude for passivated detector compared with an unpassivated device.〈/p〉
