    Beschreibung: The monograph by Grzegorz Grochowski documents insightful reflection on the current state of the field of the genre order of discourse, especially literary taxonomies. These orders are seen from the perspective of various methodological orders of the last few decades, developed in the area of postmodern literary studies. The conclusions emerging from these are examined from the angle of analytical utility of selected solutions. The study is successful at depicting the current state of the debates on the theory of literature and the dynamics of phenomena observed in the field of contemporary literature. It combines an in-depth theoretical analysis with sophisticated interpretations of the texts. Therefore, it skilfully transports theoretical discussions on to a concrete level. It also demonstrates that literature has a meaning not only against the backdrop of language and genological norm, that its dynamics require a return into the chaos of social life (rejected by structuralism).     Beschreibung: The book addresses the problem of the influence of copyright law on modern modes of functioning and understanding of literature. This problem is situated in a context of Law and Literature studies and in particular within the cultural studies of copyright, which are summarised in chapter one. The history of copyright law and related literary discussions is recapitulated in chapter two. In the next chapters, the analysis is focused on literary discussions in which copyright law is a directly posed problem, or it is indicated only as context. Particular attention is paid to: philological genealogical research (and texts by Wacław Borowy and John Livingstone Lowes); discussion surrounding T.S. Eliot’s poem ‘The Waste Land’; the debate provoked by Karol Irzykowski’s article ‘Plagiatowy charakter przełomów literackich w Polsce’ [‘The Plagiarising Character of Literary Breakthroughs in Poland’]; analysis of copyright law in the writings of Jacques Derrida and in the novel Muza dalekich podróży [The Muse of Long-Distance Travels] by Teodor Parnicki; finally, anthologies Future of Copyright published at the beginning of the twenty-first century in Poland. In the last chapter, the analysed problems are situated in the context of the debate on the commodification of literature in capitalist societies.

    Beschreibung: Culture as a Verb is a book on what I call new humanities of a wide and vastly varied orientation, direction, turns, and simply interests, interconnecting in opposition to the principles of contemporary theory of humanistic cognition. For, if contemporary knowledge is presented as bodiless, impersonal, static, external and neutral (unengaged), then the new humanities inquiries are led on the basis of different principles: embodied knowledge, personalised (participating), actively-acting (intervening cognitively), penetrating the research field and situated (engaged). This is a very significant change . . . With it, we go from a culture of disinterested observation, founded on the myth of the contemplative view of the whole external world, to a real culture of participative action, reconciled with perspectivity and the fragmentary nature of cognitive actions of a subject, who forges a path to reality, from within and by their own actions.

    Beschreibung: This book is the first monograph concerned with a feminist reading of Polish contemporary poetry to utilise tools of affective methodologies. It seeks to establish the extent to which affects contribute to the process of collective forms of existence. The book’s main thesis assumes affects to be the triggers of action, particularly of critically modifying established narratives about emotive histories of societies which include the allotment of the capacity to feel in order to coercively classify the actors and actresses of collective life. Poetry, as a very particular instance of those various affective machineries, becomes yet another version of collective memory. Poetical representations, acting in synergy with transformations of the contemporary subject, operate on three levels: firstly, by reproducing normative images of womanhood in its relations with surroundings, secondly, by disturbing the said images through an, often critical, reformulating of them, or thirdly, by becoming postulated variants of those transformations. The semantic dominants one can find in recent women’s poetry that, at the same time, constitute a portion of the broader symbolic feminine capital being a unified construct edifying the social discourses, pertain to the category of disease/illness, seeing, trauma and shame, the affective work, love, migration, and community.

    Beschreibung: The author identifies selected aspects of the history of attention and exposes the peculiar relation between philosophy and literature against this background. The task of describing the world, not finished by phenomenology, is taken up by attentive poetry: it can complete the project of portraying the visible world, while keeping the rules of perceptive faith, but also being mindful of the constraints of language at the same time. After breaking contact between word and object, the poet becomes the one who brings the spirit of mankind closer to the world. In the context of twentieth-century dilemmas and projections, attention turns out to be not only a simple consequence of a certain aesthetic choice, but instead, choosing attention gains a crucial importance, rendering it a tool of re-vindicating the lost reality. Attentive poetry, that is such poetry, which does not allow itself to get carried away with language in whichever direction, but tames its anarchy, and does not accept a finished world, rejecting the temptation of relying on easy knowledge, is complemented by attentive reflection in this study: a reflection which is not prone to putting too much faith in the exclusivity of its own accomplishments.     Beschreibung: In Part I, Ryszard Nycz formulates an opinion on the topical specifics of the humanities’ studies; the opinion is rooted in the traditions of the discipline (literary studies), the ability of its influential orientation (intertextual poetics), as well as the writings of T. W. Adorno, one of the most astute philosophers and researchers of modern culture. In Part II, the author drafts a modified formula for carrying out the theory of literature, the aim of which is to avoid not merely its marginalisation, but its breaking-up (and the assigning of it to anthropology and/or cultural studies in particular). In Part III, the author endeavours to delineate the tasks of literary criticism, exposed to challenges generated by the changes in the function and status of national literature, models of identity, and in the relationships between the global and local dimension of contemporary culture. In Part IV, case studies are used to critically test the traditional view of the solely-applied character of interpretation against theory. The last part, ‘Literature: A Reading of a Letter’, acts as a summary. In it, the author depicts a concept of literature precisely as poetics of experience, as well as drafting a sketch of the theory of its understanding. As part of this theory, in the entirety of the practices and procedures of getting to know it, the author distinguishes three separate (in some aspects) tasks: spontaneous understanding, intellectually rigorous interpretation, and the experience of reading.

    Beschreibung: In her book, Katarzyna Liszka provides the reader with a clearly outlined map of the main sides of the debate on the ‘division of labour of memory’ after the Holocaust, examines the arguments, which are used in this dispute, together with an analysis of ethical implications, which, according to the author, have a fundamental significance for the majority of Jewish thinkers taking a stance in this debate. This angle, with the focus on the plural ‘ethics of memory’ in the beginning of the work, allows the author to connect various idioms of philosophy, theology and sociology of the twentieth century, as complementary elements of reflection framed as a way of remembering. In this perspective, the subsequent notional mediations, corrections of approaches taken by Hannah Arendt, Avishai Margalit, or Zygmunt Bauman, become an indirect proof of the crystallisation, not only of the aforementioned community of memory work, but also of the transformation of ethical and legal categories related to the issue of the community of universal ethics, which the author writes about in the conclusion of her work, with reference to the reflections of Natan Sznaider and Daniel Levi.     Beschreibung: This volume comprises texts created on the basis of three-fold meetings: the first kind were constituted by lectures led by invited guests, representing various fields and areas of research, which, in some necessary simplification, can be divided into historiography (Ewa Domańska), philosophy (Agata Bielik-Robson), literary and memory studies (Michael Rothberg), and philosophy of literature (Michał Paweł Markowski). The lectures were accompanied by workshops, whose leaders present their texts in the second part of the work, and the third part is made up of notes from panel talks. As per the nature of these types of sessions, they present themselves as highly intense (various meetings from morning until evening), as well as showing the unavoidable variety in outlooks, which is one of the major advantages of such events. Another advantage is a slightly more ‘personalist’ encounter, not so much with text, but with the figure of an author, and thus also with the personality of a researcher. What became the idea bringing all these activities together was memory, understood and treated in very different ways. The variety of starting points and views on the forms and places of the functioning of memory then transformed itself into an abundance of experiences of the ‘originators’ and the richness of feelings (also of those imprinting themselves in memory) of the ‘receivers’.

    Beschreibung: Alongside Bentham the guardian of the weak and the subordinate, sensitive to other’s suffering and deeply engaged in the fight for a better future and a more just legal system, there also exists a Bentham the unmitigated demiurge, with uncontrollable ambitions, incessantly creating soulless and authoritarian worlds of control and discipline. There is much that would suggest the English philosopher was pushed towards authoritarianism by the striving to provide a sense of security to the landed classes, and by fear of phenomena such as panic and social unrest. At the same time, as work on specific projects progressed, the noble impulses which often underpin them became weak, and they were replaced, under the influence of perfectionist fears and passions, by the thirst for complete control and total discipline.     Beschreibung: We will be following the departure of cinema ‘towards virtuality’ (towards new ways of creating, understanding and existence of cinema in the times of transformations of media technology) primarily from the perspective of selected artistic practices of three artists: Peter Greenaway (who often repeats the argument about the ‘death’ of traditional cinema and the birth of new ways of depiction), Lynn Hershman Leeson (American artist of the ‘wider cinema’) and Mike Figgis, who reflected on various types of cinematic image and the cinema of the digital age in his autothematic films. The authors will also discuss cinema in the wider context of cultural reflection. Questions on the ‘virtualisation’ of culture will require an attempt at defining the notion of ‘virtuality’, and a tracing of its journey through different levels of cultural discourses, as well as linking it back to the analysed works. Towards Virtuality… is a book about cinema (its creators, works and characters), steeped in technological, philosophical, scientific and, more generally, cultural transformations of modernity.

    Beschreibung: The authors of the volume ('From May ’68 to November ’89: Transformations of the World, Literature, and Theory') intervene in the study of the student movement’s “rehearsal” for a world revolution and its afterlife in the 1980s and 1990s by addressing two hitherto neglected aspects – the literary and the peripheral. They consider the roles played by the (semi-)periphery of the modern world-system, on the one hand, and modernist literature and theory, on the other, in transforming the existing world order in the fields of culture, politics, economy, and everyday life. How were critical theory and neo-avant-garde literature in the world, in Slovenia, and in Yugoslavia intertwined with the student protest that advocated the transformation of the capitalist world-system and its socialist counterpart? The monograph focuses on the processes that connected the events of 1968 and 1989 in the social, literary, and theoretical spheres in the sign of continuity and turning points, and at the same time defined our contemporary world.

Sprašujejo se, katere vloge sta pri transformaciji obstoječe svetovne ureditve na področjih kulture, politike, gospodarstva in vsakdanjega življenja odigrali (pol)periferija modernega svetovnega-sistema na eni strani ter modernistična literatura in teorija na drugi. Kako sta bili kritična teorija in neoavantgardna literatura po svetu, na Slovenskem in v Jugoslaviji prepleteni s študentskim protestništvom, ki se je zavzemalo za transformacijo kapitalističnega svetovnega-sistema in njegove socialistične alternative? Monografija se posveča procesom, ki so na družbenem, literarnem in teoretskem področju povezali dogodke let 1968 in 1989 v znamenju kontinuitet in prelomov, obenem pa določili naš današnji svet.

    Beschreibung: In the years 1899–1901, Karel Štrekelj (1859–1912) held a course on Slovenian literature at the University of Graz. These are the first university lectures on Slovenian literature in the Slovenian language, published in two volumes. However, Štrekelj's history is more than this: it is a monumental, classically balanced synthesis of all the former knowledge of Slovenian literature, given against rich historical, social, and linguistic backgrounds.It is the first series of university lectures in the Slovenian language on the topic of Slovenian literature. The volumes of manuscript contain a complete overview of Slovenian literature from Brižinski spomeniki (The Freising Manuscripts) to Gregorčič. Štrekelj’s lectures are a landmark in the development of Slovenian studies, both from the point of view of university teaching and from the perspective of the fundamental works of Slovenian literary history.
    Beschreibung: Karel Štrekelj (1859–1912) je v slovenski humanistiki znamenit zlasti kot narodopisec in jezikoslovec, manj pa je znan kot literarni zgodovinar. Na univerzi v Gradcu pa je imel Štrekelj v štirih semestrih ob prelomu stoletja (1899–1901) predavanja o slovenski literaturi Zgodovina slovenskega slovstva I–IV. To je monumentalno, toda doslej skoraj neopaženo delo slovenske literarne zgodovine. Ohranjeno je v štirih rokopisnih zvezkih, ki skupaj obsegajo čez 1.200 strani skrbno napisanega besedila. Gre za prva univerzitetna predavanja o slovenski literaturi v slovenskem jeziku. Zvezki rokopisa vsebujejo popoln pregled slovenske književnosti od Brižinskih spomenikov do Gregorčiča. Štrekljeva predavanja so mejnik v razvoju slovenistike tako glede univerzitetnega poučevanja kakor z gledišča temeljnih del slovenske literarne zgodovine. Pričujoča znanstvena izdaja (zvezka I–II, od srednjega veka do razsvetljenstva) prinaša to obširno, dotlej najboljšo literarno zgodovino iz rokopisa v javnost – v počastitev stoletnice smrti Karla Štreklja, slovenskega filološkega klasika.

    Beschreibung: In the years 1899–1901,Karel Štrekelj (1859–1912) held a course on Slovenian literature at the University of Graz. These are the first university lectures on Slovenian literature in the Slovenian language, published in two volumes. However, Štrekelj's history is more than this: it is a monumental, classically balanced synthesis of all the former knowledge of Slovenian literature, given against rich historical, social, and linguistic backgrounds.The present book includes volumes three and four of Štrekelj’s manuscript in a historically faithful, critical and annotated copy. Štrekelj opens a surprisingly fresh, original view of the era of Prešeren and Bleiweis, as well as the period up to the end of the 19th century, focusing on a series of major and minor figures, some of whom are almost forgotten today. He presents this period, in which there was no lack of disputes and disagreements, from a higher perspective: he attempts to explain each individual in the light of his or her own endeavours in the historical period, and to demonstrate the essence of his or her contribution to Slovenian literature. In so doing, Karel Štrekelj stands high above not only the internal disputes of individual writers in Slovenian literature, but also the ideological battles that later literary historians admitted to their literary histories through wide open doors.
    Beschreibung: Karel Štrekelj (1859–1912) je imel na univerzi v Gradcu v letih 1899–1901 predavanja o slovenski literaturi. To so prva univerzitetna predavanja o slovenski književnosti v slovenskem jeziku. Hkrati je Štrekljeva Zgodovina več kot to: je monumentalna, klasično uravnotežena sinteza vse dotedanje vednosti o slovenskem slovstvu, podana na bogatem ozadju zgodovinskega, socialnega in zlasti jezikovnega razvoja. Ta knjiga prinaša III. in IV. del Štrekljevega rokopisa v historično zvestem, kritičnem in komentiranem prepisu. Štrekelj odpira v knjigi presenetljivo svež pogled na Prešernovo in Bleiweisovo dobo ter čas do izteka 19. stoletja z vrsto velikih in manjših, danes skoraj pozabljenih osebnosti. Čas, v katerem ni manjkalo sporov in nesoglasij, Štrekelj prikaže z višje perspektive: vsako osebnost skuša pojasniti v luči njenih lastnih prizadevanj v zgodovinskem času in prikazati bralcu, v čem je njen prispevek k slovenskemu slovstvu. S tem stoji Karel Štrekelj visoko nad notranjimi spori ne le posameznih pisateljev v naši književnosti, ampak tudi visoko nad ideološkimi boji, ki so jim poznejši literarni zgodovinarji odprli vrata v svoje literarne zgodovine.

    Beschreibung: In the last few decades, comparative literature has spread even to those parts of the world that it had not reached before. However, at the same time it has faced a crisis in its traditional centers across Europe and North America, which has shaken its conceptual premises, theoretical foundations, and methodological structure, affected its inclusion in university and scholarly institutions, and jeopardized its social status. The discipline responded to this fundamental change through increased self-awareness and a true flourishing of relevant production directed towards fundamental reflections on its identity, the current situation, its genesis, and possible future paths.
    Beschreibung: Monografski zbornik s prispevki 14 slovenskih in 10 tujih avtorjev analizira opus Antona Ocvirka, utemeljitelja primerjalne književnosti na Slovenskem, in ga postavlja v kontekst razvoja stroke doma in na tujem. Drugo problemsko težišče knjige je današnje stanje stroke po svetu, ki ga opredeljujejo prevrati v humanističnih vedah ter spremenljiva vloga literature v procesih globalizacije. Podrobneje so obravnavani problemi literarnega zgodovinopisja ter razmerja med primerjalno književnostjo in sorodnimi ali konkurenčnimi disciplinami. V današnji krizi primerjalne književnosti se kažejo možnosti za njeno prenavljanje in napovedujejo nove razvojne perspektive.

    Beschreibung: This volume ('Johann Ludwig Schönleben (1618–1681): A description of his life and work') features the first fundamental research on Johann Ludwig Schönleben (1618–1681), an important Carniolan historian, preacher, theologian, and polymath, who despite his greatness and importance for the Slovenian and wider European environment has not yet been comprehensively studied. It presents his life in detail, explaining many aspects of his life that have been unknown or poorly known up to now. The biographical part is followed by an overview of Schönleben’s entire oeuvre, which includes all of his printed and manuscript writings discovered so far, either preserved or unpreserved. The last two chapters focus on Schönleben’s historiographic and rhetorical or preaching works, placing his most important printed works in these two areas at the forefront, but also taking into account his extensive manuscript material. This volume provides an evaluation of Schönleben as a historian and preacher, and draws attention to the important transitional role he played in these two areas (influencing the works of his successors Johann Weikhard von Valvasor, Johann Gregor Thalnitscher, Tobia Lionelli, and Jernej Basar).
    Beschreibung: Monografija prinaša prvo temeljno raziskavo o Janezu Ludviku Schönlebnu (1618–1681), pomembnem kranjskem zgodovinarju, pridigarju, teologu in polihistorju, ki kljub svoji veličini in pomembnosti za slovenski in širši evropski prostor do sedaj še ni bil deležen celostne obravnave. Podrobno predstavlja njegovo življenjsko pot in pojasnjuje mnoge vidike njegovega življenja, ki so bili doslej neznani ali slabo poznani. Biografskemu delu sledi pregled celotnega Schönlebnovega opusa, v katerem so zbrani vsi njegovi doslej odkriti natisnjeni in rokopisni, ohranjeni in neohranjeni spisi. Zadnja dva vsebinska sklopa monografije se osredotočata na Schönlebnov zgodovinopisni in govorniški ter pridigarski opus. V ospredju prikaza so njegova najpomembnejša natisnjena dela z omenjenih dveh področij, upoštevano pa je tudi obsežno rokopisno gradivo. Monografija prinaša oceno Schönlebna kot zgodovinarja in pridigarja ter opozarja na pomembno prehodno vlogo (J. V. Valvasor, J. G. Dolničar, J. Svetokriški, J. Basar), ki jo je odigral na obeh področjih.

    Beschreibung: World literature is always “glocalized.” Every national literature, every region, migration, and multicultural space has fashioned its own version of world literature. Consequently, many world literatures simultaneously exist within the single and unequal global literary system, “Slovenian” world literature being one of them. Based on Casanova’s and Moretti’s theories of the world literary system/space and, using a transdisciplinary approach, the collective volume explores the relationships between the world literary system and small or peripheral literary fields: the Slovenian, Estonian, Croatian, Luxembourgish, and Georgian. The authors of chapters are: César Domínguez, Bala Venkat Mani, Jernej Habjan, Katarina Molk, Jola Škulj, Morana Čale, Jüri Talvet, Jeanne Glesener, Liina Lukas, Irma Ratiani, Alen Širca, Matija Ogrin, Luka Vidmar, Darko Dolinar, Marko Juvan, Marijan Dović, Alenka Koron, Andraž Jež, and Jožica Jožef Beg.
    Beschreibung: Svetovna književnost je kot globalni pojav navzoča prek mnoštva lokalnih variant. Vsaka nacionalna literatura si je s knjižnim prometom, knjižnicami, prevodi, šolskim kanonom in repertoarjem referenčnih tujih del, ki so navdihovala domačo tradicijo, ustvarila svojo, specifično »glokalizirano« različico svetovne literature. Toda ta pluralnost je naddoločena z enotnim, a neenakim svetovnim literarnim sistemom, razpetim med središča in obrobja. Študije slovenskih in tujih avtorjev, zbrane v tej knjigi, razmerje slovenske književnosti do ideje in prakse svetovne literature prikazujejo v teoretskem in zgodovinskem kontekstu primerljivih književnosti Evrope, katerih sistemski položaj je obroben.

    Beschreibung: The book deals with the correspondence of Žiga Zois Baron Edelstein, the most important Enlightenment-era patron and mentor of Slovenian poets, writers, and scholars. The first part of the book defines the position of Zois’ correspondence within the history and the genre of the letter. The second part examines its importance for Slavic national revivals. Zois’ network at the end of the 18th and in the beginning of the 19th centuries linked into Enlightenment-era Republic of Letters the greatest intellectuals of the Central Europe and the Balkans. With the centers in Ljubljana and Vienna it did not only instructed Slovenian writers and scholars, but also supported all Slavic cultural nationalisms in Austrian empire.
    Beschreibung: Knjiga se ukvarja s pomenom korespondence Žige Zoisa za razvoj narodnih prerodov Slovencev in Slovanov. Baronova pisemska mreža je na koncu 18. in na začetku 19. stoletja v razsvetljensko literarno republiko povezala največje duhove srednje Evrope in Balkana. Z vozliščema v Ljubljani in na Dunaju ni usmerjala le slovenskih literatov in jezikoslovcev, temveč poganjala tudi druge slovanske kulturne nacionalizme na območju avstrijskega cesarstva.

    Beschreibung: Koron’s monograph explores a vast field of theory – occassionally called post-classical narratology – from the historical-developmental and the systematic or theoretical-methodological perspectives. The first part of the book treats the theoretical preliminaries, basic concepts, terminological questions, delimitations of the research subject, and the definitions of narrative. The second part outlines the history of narrative theories, divided into several phases, and the formation of its concepts. The third part discusses Slovenian contributions to the field and compares them to the international state of research. The fourth part examines the applicability of contemporary narratological approaches to concrete texts. It treats the concept of omniscient narration, aspects of narratology of drama and the phenomenon of narrativity in the plays of Dušan Jovanović (1939–), the development of gendered narratology, the introduction of narratological concepts in autobiographies and concludes the discussion with entering the interdisciplinary field of historiographical narratology.
    Beschreibung: Knjiga se razvejanega področja, za katerega je v rabi tudi termin postklasična naratologija, loteva iz dveh literarnovednih perspektiv: historično razvojne in sistematske ali teoretično metodološke. Tako zajame pojav, ki v slovenski literarni vedi doslej še ni bil obravnavan na ta način in v takem obsegu in se pri tem osredotoči na verbalne pripovedi. Prvi del knjige se ukvarja s teoretskimi preliminarijami, vpeljavo temeljnih pojmov in terminološkimi vprašanji, določitvijo predmeta raziskovanja in definicijami pripovedi. Drugi del sledi zgodovini teorij pripovedi in oblikovanju njenega pojmovnega instrumentarija skozi več razvojnih faz. Tretji del pregleda slovenske dosežke in jih primerja z razvojem mednarodnih raziskav. Četrti del pa preverja aplikabilnost sodobnih pripovednoteoretskih teženj ob konkretnem gradivu. Obravnava koncept vsevednega pripovedovanja, vidike naratologije drame in pojav pripovednosti v dramatiki Dušana Jovanovića, razvoj naratologije družbenih spolov, vpeljavo pripovednoteoretskih kategorij v raziskovanje avtobiografij in zaokroži razpravljanje z vstopom na interdisciplinarno področje t. i. historiografske naratologije.

    Beschreibung: This monograph deals with theoretical and historical aspects of the position of the writer in Slovenia from the end of 18th century, when literature started to differentiate itself from other systems and form an autonomous social system, to the situation in which the writer finds himself at the beginning of the 21st century.
    Beschreibung: V knjigi se mladi, a že uveljavljeni literarni teoretik in zgodovinar Marijan Dović loti teme, ki na prvi pogled zveni »iztrošeno«, na inovativen, mestoma tudi provokativen način. Razvoja pisatelja ne zasleduje skozi biografsko ali tekstualno optiko, temveč težišče premakne in raje sledi evoluciji literarnega sistema in njegove avtonomije, pisatelja kot literarnega proizvajalca pa postavi v okvir medijskih, distribucijskih in komunikacijskih mehanizmov, ki omogočajo različne strukturne pozicije znotraj sistema, akumulacijo simbolnega kapitala ter zavzemanje položajev, ki krmilijo konsekracijo in kanonizacijo. Ob tem sproti zariše historiat pisateljskih modelov in mehanizme, ki so zaznamovali razvoj percepcij pisateljeve družbene pozicije, na koncu pa revidira znano tezo o slovenskem kulturnem sindromu.
