Description: Voltaire is one of the few European authors of the 18th century to have dealt with Korea. In this study, we first propose to highlight, through an analysis of all of his work, the texts in which he mentioned Korea and how this country is represented there. We will then try to identify his documentary sources, and we will focus mainly on how the author created stories from historical elements. Our survey also aims to understand Voltaire’s attitude to the historical-philosophical and dramatic genres, and to better understand his conception of these two genres.

Description: This chapter takes a hanging scroll by Shiba Kōkan (1747–1818) as a starting point to explore the emotional response of individuals and communities from distant cultures and places in the face of disasters, in particular earthquakes and fires. Images of disasters, and how they were dealt with, travelled through time and space, begging the question as to what role transcultural entanglements played in these responses.

Description: This chapter presents a new tun in the research project Multilingual Cultural Heritage Lexicon that consists in extending the LBC French corpus through a sub-corpus on Bologna and the Emilia-Romagna region (BER). After presenting the two projects connected with the LBC corpus (UniCittà 2019-2021 and UniVOCittà – ongoing), Zotti presents the BER sub-corpus from a quantitative and qualitative point of view reflecting on its role ans its complementarity for the description of the artistic terminology in the LBC comparable monolingual corpus. Zotti concludes by showcasing the applications and results of the corpus-driven approach and its potential for inferring linguistic knowledge when it comes to (diastratic and diatopic) synonymy, suggesting new strategies for the translation of cultural-specific items.

Description: This chapter focuses on the role of corpora, in particular the LBC corpus (Lessico dei Beni Culturali), in the training of (future) translators. First, a variety of teaching methodologies, such as «task», «Learners’ Bilingual Lexicography/Terminography», «Corpus-Based/ Data-Driven Learning», and «strategic competence» will be re-examined, taking into account the use of corpora at all stages of translators’ training. The article will then illustrate a case study involving two translation classes focusing on architecture and art history (including Gothic and Renaissance art). These have led to the writing of a bilingual glossary (Portuguese-French and French-Portuguese), a collaborative and ongoing project for students in translation.

Description: The contributions gathered in this book are from the eponymous international symposium held in Paris in 2019. They discuss the relationship that drawing, design and the project, understood here as a triad, have with the transformation of places. Drawing on a range of disciplines - architecture, urban planning, landscape design, geography and the visual arts - the authors explore the practices and tools adopted in the processes of representing and reconfiguring open spaces, and in the development of spatial projects for newly emerging territories. More specifically, the authors examine the role and future of drawing and non-discursive representation in contemporary socio-spatial transition processes.

Description: This article explores the conditions under which alum production has developed in the Western Mediterranean, in the second half of the fifteenth century. In two decades, between about 1460 and 1480, several important production sites have appeared in the Italian peninsula or in the Iberian peninsula. They have provided European industries and crafts with quality alum, and they quickly overshadowed sources of supply, that had previously prevailed in Anatolia or the Aegean Sea. The article discusses the useful knowledge mobilized to facilitate this growth, in particular, the techniques used and the players involved in this changeover.

Description: Baudelaire et Wagner. “The intellectual name of love is interest”, wrote Thomas Mann in his Considerations of an apolitical man (1915-1918). The interest, he specifies, "implies an emotional state that is nothing less than lukewarm", which "far exceeds in violence that of admiration'". It is not then in the panegyric, but in "malicious, even hateful" criticism, and in particular in the pamphlet (on condition "that it is spiritual and a product of passion") that this interest is found to be satisfied. The loving challenge that Thomas Mann issued at Wagner during the war is an answer, if possible, to Baudelaire's intention.

Description: Leningrad under siege (1941-1944) appears to be a privileged context to study the perception of the Enemy by the Soviet people. The diaries kept by hundreds of exhausted and starved Leningraders allow an in-depth study of the terminology used by ordinary citizens to name the Germans (between fascism and internationalism) who bombed the city almost daily. It refines our understanding of the effectiveness of the Soviet propaganda, and thus contributes to a broader reflection on the mechanisms of internalization and deconstruction of the official discourse, and its influence on the popular language.

Description: This book is conceived with the desire to dialogue with the southern shore of the Mediterranean Sea about some great current challenges in the fields of urban design and territorial planning. In this perspective, the authors identify six themes at the basis of the Italian disciplinary tradition, from which to extract suggestions for future projects. Some specific strategies emerge: the structuring role of the non-artificialized open space; the ordering function of the collective public space; the centrality of public action in the governance of transformations; the importance of multidisciplinary and integrated approach to problems; the heritage intended as a living repository of ideas for the project. Finally, the evocation of a limit between anthropogenic and natural factors that gives measure and dimension to our world.

Description: Charles I of Anjou restored the counties according to the Norman system; his successors im- proved them and let them become a space of local power inside the the Royal districts, the gi- ustizierati. At the same time some aristocratic families consolidated themselves, like the Ruffo of Calabria, lords of Sinopoli, who obtained the comital title in 1334. The paper analyses two important records: the cartulario 1 and the cartulario 17, integrating them with all the availa- ble documents. The cartulario 17 contains platea dating from 1335, which includes one or two older texts written in Greek and translated into Latin. It is at the same time an inventory and a municipal statute. The cartulario 17 is the main source for studying the creation, composition and ruling of the county of Sinopoli, not to mention the various world of the subjects to the lords, according to their status (vassallus) or their possessions as freemen (burgenses). We have also suffeudatarii and other people depending on the baron, like the raccomandati.

Description: I. Repin’s “Ivan the Terrible and his son”, exhibited in 1885, in a very tense social and political context, sparked off fierce reactions. While the Itinerant painter Kramskoj is enthusiastic, the ge-neral-prosecutor of the Holy Synod, K. Pobedonoscev, finds the painting “simply repulsive”. In France a similar scandal was caused by Gericault’s “Raft of the Medusa” (1819). It represents the last instants of the martyrdom of the survivors of the Medusa’s shipwreck (1816). Repin’s painting, unlike that of Gericault, keeps on arousing a great hostility nowadays in conservative Russian circles.

Description: This research focuses on the d’Este cardinals’ diplomatic and religious actions and on their role as mediators between Italy and France. The objective is to uncover the geopolitical foundations of their actions whilst highlighting the different scales thereof. The presence of Ippolito II and Luigi d’Este is studied both in terms of their material presence and their participation in the political stakes of the time. Finally, by examining their modus operandi on the international scene, this study argues that a Catholic identity is emerging which is not heterodox for which crossing the mountains leads to readjustments in manners of expressing and representing the Catholic faith.

Description: The commentaries composed by the English theologian Nicholas Trevet at the beginning of the fourteenth century not only bear witness to his connections with Santa Maria Novella. They also testify to the importance of his contribution to the transfer of knowledge about Antiquity and the rebirth of antiquarianism in the Italian peninsula. This essay argues that Trevet’s Scholastic commentaries, presented as an expositio, met the need that Italian intellectuals had of a fuller understanding of classic literature, pagan mythology and Roman history.

Description: The identification of all the friars active in Santa Maria Novella on a regular basis or only temporarily is a puzzling issue, due to the high mobility of Dominican friars as well as the complexities of the internal organization of the convent. This contribution offers a schematic chronology of the Florentine Dominican convent of Santa Maria Novella between 1291 and 1319. For each year, the prior, the main lector, the lector of the Sentences, the students, and other friars active in the convent are listed, together with further information about the major events taking place at the convent.

Description: If the play, our device, had no other function than to project, "at some elevation", certain lacks of which we would hardly be aware, there can only be in the Letters, according to Mallarmé, a single essential act: to question the relationships that this device maintains with some internal state of ourselves. We believe, with the author of La Musique et les Lettres, that it is through the play of their often rival relationships that the arts can be understood and make us understand. This game, which never stops urging us, constantly asks us for new instruments for its implementation - or its staging.

Description: This article examines Remigio de’ Girolami’s treatise De modis rerum. This metaphysical treatise addresses all aspects of this discipline, which, in the footsteps of his master Thomas Aquinas, Remigio understands as an ontology. The investigation confirms the Thomistic orientation of Remigio’s philosophy but also highlights Remigio’s acute perception of the complex relationships between thought, language and reality. Thus, the author argues that this treatise proposes an innovative approach to metaphysics based on the study of the meanings of key notions of the discipline.

Description: This paper proposes a revision of Russian modernism’s politically-motivated chronology and geography through the integration of two academic subfields – modernist and exilic studies. Such an integrative approach allows us better to position Russian modernist culture vis-à-vis its western counterparts, returning our research subject to its original context in the larger, international modernist field. The paper will subsequently offer a tentative sketch of the aesthetic and philosophical premises of late Russian modernism against the backdrop of western modernist practices in the 1930s.

Description: The main object of this book is a manuscript preserved in Rome but composed in Florence in the middle of the fifteenth century, which transmits a text that is nearly unknown and highly original for at least three reasons. Firstly, the subject matter: a description of the Camaldoli hermitage at a time when this place was highly appreciated. Secondly, the discursive genre: the description of a built landscape, influenced both by humanist ekphrasis and by the tradition of medieval figurative exegesis. Finally, the dedicatee of the work, who is no less than Peter son of Cosimo dei Medici. The book successively examines the medieval and modern tradition of this little work, the identity of its author and the milieu of its production and first reception, and finally the details – some of them completely new – of the description of the Camaldolese hermitage and their textual and figurative tradition. It concludes with a critical edition of the work and the glosses with which it was enhanced in modern times. It is therefore a contribution not only to the history of an important Tuscan monastic centre, but also to that of the cultural and political networks of Tuscany in the second half of the fifteenth century, as well as to the knowledge of the textual and iconographic genres of landscape and monumental description, and finally, in a certain way, of modern Tuscan scholarship.

Description: The two major ports on the French Atlantic coast have many points in common, including the facilities of relations with their hinterland. But, in the sixteenth century, they had a very different destiny. Bordeaux was a passive port, waiting for the ships to load the products offered by its merchants (wine, pastel) and redistributing it in its hinterland. Rouen had to supply Paris and the Paris region, to bring raw materials for the Normandy industry and to look for outlets for its productions: this port therefore quickly turned to distant destinations where it could satisfy the needs of its economy.

Description: The four documents published for the first time in extenso are dedicated to the memorable events such as the last uprising of Strel’tsy, the two investigations organized by the authorities, and the execution of the culprits. The documents bring some new details about the rebellion, but they prove to be much more interesting from another point of view – that of the setting up of the image of the young tsar in the diplomatic documents of that time. In this sense, Paul Heins’ letters prepare the image of Piter the Great that will be created by the panegyrics of the tsar in the XVIIIth century.

Description: France was a country that had great agricultural potential and natural resources that allowed it to not be dependent on external markets, especially raw materials from the North. French ports, however, maintained close relations with the Baltic countries where they marketed many products and obtained supplies of naval stores and, depending on the economic situation, cereals. This paper proposes to revisit the French trade with the Baltic over a period of two centuries by using the Sound Toll Accounts whose entire data is now available to the research community. As we will see, several evidences are to be reconsidered.

Description: Soon after greeting the February revolution, Klyuev turns to an aesthetic of violence and disruption. In the poetic cycle Medny Kit (1918), the utopia of “peasant paradise” stems from the apocalyptic destruction of old Russia. While the poet contemplates the cyclicity of Russian history, the lyrical subject comes transfigured out of the “red” baptism, identifying himself simultaneously to Rasputin and Avvakum. As the cycle captures the brutal melody of the times, the lyric genre is pushed to its limit – polyphony, which announces the transition to narrative and epic poetry.

Description: The consumption of fabrics in 18th-Century Europe experienced a notable expansion - particularly in France, a major hub for the diffusion of clothing fashions across the continent. Driven by manufacturers and merchants, the supply of new product varieties has been highlighted in several French production areas. However, a general assessment of the scale and rates of product innovation in the market for fabrics has never been attempted. By varying the scales of analysis, from the statistics the French monarchy used to assess production in the various production areas to store inventories, we can try to estimate the secular movements of product innovation. Over the course of the 18th century, the market for medium or poor quality cloths appears to have been particularly dynamic: the proportion of new varieties at the end of the century approximated two-thirds of the stock. There was also a tendency to diversify the supply - which ended up making the "world of goods" difficult to read, many product innovations being present on the market only for a while.

Description: The present article aims to present Boccaccio’s Buccolicum carmen as a main work in his latin production, inspired by Vergil and his followers during the Middle Age. Through the allegorical path, focused on the shepherd’s environment, Boccaccio first defines a model of power embodied by the king-shepherd. Moreover, he tries to convert his readers, as well as himself, into a better way of life related to Vergil’s one and close to the eremitic model. By doing so, he accomplishes himself as a poeta-theologus, as exposed by Dante.

Description: The issue of villages and neighborhoods at risk of abandonment is a common topic in many Mediterranean regions and is considered as a strategic point of the new European policies. The progressive abandonment of inland areas, with phenomena of emigration and fragmentation of cultural heritage, is a common trend in countries characterized by economic underdevelopment. This leads to the decay of architectural artifacts and buildings and problems with land management. Some aspects of this issue are also found in several urban areas. The goal of this research work is collecting international debates, discussions, opinions and comparisons concerning the analysis, study, surveys, diagnoses and graphical rendering of architectural heritage and landscape as well as demo-ethno-anthropological witnesses, typological-constructive stratifications, materials and technologies of traditional and vernacular constructions of historic buildings.

Description: Since the reign of Juan II and especially Queen Isabel I of Castile, we have found that silk fabrics had displaced expensive dyed wool cloths from the first place, at least among the privileged groups. At the same time, a very fine linen fabric, the holanda spread in a spectacular way, at least in the case of the House of Isabel I, especially as body linen and household line. In this article, we discuss how these changes could be transmitted downwards through some examples of different social groups - nobility, townspeople, peasants - considering the economic and social limitations that would have been relevant in its diffusion.

Description: The article compares some of the so-called Hippocratic treatises and Aristotle’s Physics, Meteorologics, Ethics and Politics, on what would define a human community, if not a nation. It shows a common absence of the notions of climate and environment but a close way of conceiving the physical continuity between the outside world (immediate or more distant) and the inside of living bodies. Then, the external conditions (seasons, temperatures, nature of the soil) similarly determine the complexions and characters of the populations that experience them. Divergences occur due to the determinism of the external conditions on politics. The Hippocratic treaties do not recognise this, unlike Aristotle, except that the Stagirite excludes from this determinism the Greek City and the virtues, including the civic virtue of justice.

Description: This article describes the activity of a network of Corsican merchants and sailors active in the Western Mediterranean between the sixteenth and the seventeenth century, in particular in Tunis, Marseille, Leghorn and the areas of Corsica under Genoa’s rule. Based on early-seventeenth-century factums and memorials, and notary deeds and documents from the archives of the Record’s Office of the French Consulate in Tunis, this essay describes how several families of Corsican merchants – some naturalised French in Marseille, some converted to Islam in Tunis – were part of the political and economic elites of the Mediterranean area.

Description: At the turn of the fourteenth century (1295-1301), the Florentine Dominican Remigio de’ Girolami produced a collection of essential texts connected to events in Florentine politics that present the testimony of a well-informed intellectual directly involved in the Communal crises. This article proposes to analyze, as a case study, the influence of Remigio’s five sermons on Florentine communal life. His preaching in reaction to the crises shaking Florence happened in dialogue with the institutions and citizens of the Commune. It bears witness to the interactions between Santa Maria Novella and the city of Florence and contributes to the development of the political philosophy of its time.

Description: Dedicated to the medina in the Mediterranean space, this book is essentially based on detailed historical and photographic research into the characteristics of city design and its evolution, as well as some case studies from direct experience. The main objective of the present study consists of its documentary and evocative value, without forgetting the analysis of the multiple architectural spaces with monumental complexes of extraordinary cultural importance arranged according to precise hierarchies and specific uses. The research summarises the different experiences from this immense Arab-Muslim architectural heritage and its urban evolution. These aspects are expressed both by the large number of case studies (from Cordoba to Palermo, passing through Fez, Séfrou, Marrakech and Tunis) as well as by the quality of the built spaces as a whole. The several contributions show an urban framework that is still legible and significant, consisting of grids of houses with forms, structures and functions that show a concentration of spaces, places and monuments stratified over time and developed in the Mediterranean countries, producing extremely diverse situations.

Description: This article analyses the dynamic role of Justice in Dante’s Comedy. As the judge of his Otherworld, Dante establishes harsh punishments for the sinners in his Inferno. Moreover, he attacks their earthly fame in a way similar to what he experienced as an exile condemned to death by his Commune. Dante also defines the lighter penitences which torture the souls of his Purgatorio. Finally, Dante’s Justice shines alive in his Paradiso, first in the sky of Mercury and then, at its apotheosis, in the sky of Jupiter, when the eagle an-wers Dante the Pilgrim’s difficult questions about the salvation of pagan souls. As the eagle points out, even the blessed souls do not know the names of all the saved ones, and this remark should invite mortals to restrain from judging their peers. A similar message seems to be at the very heart of Aquinas’ speech in the sky of the Sun.
