    Description: This book is the first Finnish-language collection of research on superdiversity. At the core of the book is the growing migration to Finland since the turn of the 1990s and its numerous effects on Finnish society. The interdisciplinary examination of superdiversity is important at the current moment: Finland as a society has reached the point where certain social categories, such as ethnic background, country of birth, mother tongue or gender, are not necessarily sufficient to understand the increased diversity and its consequences. The book consists of a comprehensive introduction to the topic and thirteen chapters. In Finland, research on superdiversity is carried out especially in critical sociolinguistics and applied language studies, education, cultural studies, social sciences, and urban studies. Therefore, these disciplines are strongly represented in the collection, and the chapters approach a variety of topics including refugees’ mental health, experiences of multilingual families, the diversity of education and working life, discursive practices in social media, issues of urban planning and pro-asylum activism.

Odnoszą się do wypowiedzi wspomnieniowych, auto- i biograficznych, świadectw, tekstów politycznych, prawnych czy „świeckich hagiografii” tworzonych oddolnie. W polu ich zainteresowań mieszczą się także procesy społeczne i zbiorowa pamięć oraz formy mentalności społecznej. Odwołują się do zasobów antropologii politycznej zainteresowanej tożsamościami zbiorowymi, narracjami kulturowymi, znaczeniem i interpretacją symboli, budujących metafory i wyobrażenia, toposy. Przyświeca nam idea, że pamięć jest polityczna, a to, jak o niej myślimy, mówimy i ją tworzymy, jest zagadnieniem politycznym, objawiającym się w tekstach i praktykach kulturowych, których herstoria jest przykładem, a które stanowią mobilizujące uprawomocnienie zbiorowych wizji wspólnoty.

    Description: Michael Agricola’s main work is the New Testament, published in 1548, a magnificent quarto volume of 700 pages with a hundred woodcuts. The basic text used was the Greek text published by Erasmus, Erasmus’ Latin translation, the Vulgate, the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible from 1541. The 450 marginal glosses come from the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible. In his translation, Agricola distinguished “the Holy Spirit’s own words,” i.e. H. the Bible text, the prefaces and marginal glosses, which were only intended to provide “clearer understanding”. The word of God is much more valuable than the word of man, so that the translator was closely tied to the text. A free translation was out of the question, let alone consciously improving the text. He was able to proceed more freely with the prefaces and marginal glosses. Most of the time he translated verbatim, but did not shy away from omissions, additions and changes when he deemed them appropriate. In this critical edition, Agricola’s marginal glosses on the New Testament are printed in parallel with their sources.

    Description: The biography of Margaret Darling Kilpinen (1896–1965) represents the fields of music history and women’s studies. It brings forth a woman who is of pliable but also strong character. She was active for over four decades in the musical life of Finland. What kind of professional role, combining performing and pedagogical work, was she able to build for herself? She was the wife of a well-known, strong-willed composer who had many ties to Germany, and also the mother of a daughter. How was she able to keep up her own artistry? The book deals with Margaret’s role as a solo and lied pianist, her long career as a pedagogue in the Sibelius Academy and as a harpsichord player with a part in the rise of old music in Finland in the 1930s. There is also the microhistorical angle: While looking at Margaret as a person and her life, general tendencies and attitudes among the cultural circles of Finland of her time are revealed. The main source material for the book, which is available for use for the very first time, has been the correspondence between Yrjö and Margaret Kilpinen.

    Description: The book approaches the history of Finnish development cooperation through the experiences of development aid workers. At its core is a small group of Finns (experts and officials from different fields) who have worked with international development aid in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Their memories and experiences, together with diverse archival material offer an interesting window into the world of development (cooperation), or “Aidland”, from the 1960s to the turn of the millennium. The research focuses on the personal motives and experiences of Finnish aid workers from the 1960s to the 2000s. The book offers perspectives on the historical construction of Aidland since the 1940s and on the gradual integration of Finland and the Finns into its structures. It describes the mindset of the first two generations of aid workers and the factors that made them interested in developing countries. The book follows their education, their first contacts with Aidland, adaptation to work and conditions, returning home and the challenges that come with it. The study gives the reader a view of the power positions, hierarchies and contradictions in Aidland and development cooperation, which at times led Finns to reassess their motives and justify to themselves the meaningfulness of the entire undertaking. Through their experiences, the book also deals with the less-known side of development cooperation, such as corruption, prejudices, and opposition to development projects, as well as their occasionally unwanted consequences in partner/recipient countries. It also sheds light on the effects of the Aidland experience on an individual’s worldview and identity. The book is an academic study suitable for a wide audience, from university students to ordinary readers interested in development cooperation. The book helps to understand both the history of development and the construction of multi-level connections of Finnish society with the countries of the Global South. It is therefore also ideally suited for readers interested in the development of Finland’s internationalization in the late twentieth century. For its part, the book contributes to wider public debates on development cooperation.

    Description: The monograph by Grzegorz Grochowski documents insightful reflection on the current state of the field of the genre order of discourse, especially literary taxonomies. These orders are seen from the perspective of various methodological orders of the last few decades, developed in the area of postmodern literary studies. The conclusions emerging from these are examined from the angle of analytical utility of selected solutions. The study is successful at depicting the current state of the debates on the theory of literature and the dynamics of phenomena observed in the field of contemporary literature. It combines an in-depth theoretical analysis with sophisticated interpretations of the texts. Therefore, it skilfully transports theoretical discussions on to a concrete level.     Description: Participatory approaches and co-research are increasingly employed in the current moment for exploring barriers to equality. Co-research treats research participants as experts in their own lives and as equal research partners. Research conducted with this orientation is based on research problems drafted by the research participants themselves from their aspirations regarding the research process and an active partnership that considers the interests of all parties involved. Participatory methods are used in co-research, particularly for the purpose of deepening the contextualisation of research knowledge about structurally vulnerable or subordinated groups and to challenge the power positions associated with traditional research designs. In co-research, the role of the people involved in the research is more central than in more traditional research. One of the key principles of co-research is that co-investigators (a) can participate in various roles, (b) have the opportunity to participate in different phases of the research according to their own interests and resources, and (c) co-investigators' participation can take many forms, including differences in intensity. The idea is to provide more people with opportunities to contribute to the knowledge production about themselves and their communities from their respective perspectives and interests. Co-research is also seen as an opportunity to improve the relevance and usefulness of scientific knowledge. It aims to genuinely increase interaction and openness and extend science's societal responsibility. In this book, we approach co-research as a means to promote social justice, as an action with a societal impact contributor to social impact and as a means to promote the societal responsibility of science. We discuss and evaluate the ideals of the co-research process concerning the everyday challenges and practices in research. Above all, we offer the knowledge and experience generated by our own projects to support those planning or already implementing co-research projects.

    Description: If the artworld is a battlefield of meanings, the fortunes of discourse did not favour avant-garde art in Finland in the 1910s. The latest trends, introduced by German and Russian artists in three pioneering exhibitions in Helsinki in 1914 and 1916, were dismissed by the Finnish press as foolish and unworthy. This book researches the contemporary reactions and contents of these exhibitions. The works shown in Helsinki included masterpieces from artists such as Chagall, Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Marc, Münter and Rozanova. Today these works can be found in the collections of leading museums in Europe, Russia and the USA. From the Finnish perspective, the turndown in the 1910s proved effective and irreversible. Never again have the local collections had similar opportunities to make a purchase. The rejection of radical international developments and emphasis on narrow nationalistic views left Finnish art lagging behind. This trend was already apparent in 1917 in St. Petersburg, where the Finnish artists were celebrated but their paintings deemed sombre and superannuated.

    Description: This volume looks at the Finnish-German military alliance (1941–1944) as a translation zone – a multilingual network of military, administrative and civilian encounters that was held together by linguistically versed soldiers and civilians acting as interpreters and translators. It focuses on interpreters and liaison officers of the Finnish Liaison Staff in Rovaniemi, who were assigned to the staffs of the German army units with the task of maintaining communication between the two armies and assisting German troops in their daily matters. Furthermore, attention is paid to Finnish civilians, especially women whose language skills made them candidates for a range of mediation tasks in the German units. The reconstruction of military interpreters’ and liaison officers’ tasks and mediation agency between the two military cultures is based on their war-time weekly reports, whereas the civilian interpreters’ experiences are drawn from a variety of autobiographical accounts, including interviews.

    Description: Mechthild of Hackeborn represents medieval mysticism. Her Revelations were written down in the 1290s in Helfta, Germany. The oldest surviving versions are in Latin, but in the Middle Ages, the Revelations were translated at least into Dutch, English, Swedish, and German. The text was translated into Swedish in 1469 by Jöns Budde, a Bridgettine brother from Naantali. Budde made few omissions but many additions in the text, mainly explanations to meet the needs of the Bridgettine sisters. Budde’s translation is faithful to the original text, and he made few mistakes. My Finnish translation of the text follows Budde’s version where possible. However, Budde translated an abridged version that omitted some chapters, and the only surviving copy of Budde’s translation is incomplete. I have therefore translated the missing sections from Latin and incorporated them in the text. My translation also includes editorial comments on the language, the contents, and the historical and theological contexts of the Revelations.

    Description: Through an intelligent and sharp description of the Irvine School of Critical Theory, Ewa Bobrowska’s book significantly expands the knowledge about post-structuralist critical thinking that has dominated the Western humanities in the last quarter of a century. While the achievements of Derrida, Lyotard, Iser, as well as Jameson, Joseph Hillis Miller, Greenblatt, and Dominick LaCapra are well known in Polish critical thought, the interdisciplinary project called the Irvine School has not yet been systematically and competently described. . . . The unusual dispositions of the author, who is an English philologist, philosopher, art historian, and an active artist, allow her to carry out all dimensions of the analysis, including critical discourse, philosophical reasoning, and an intellectual examination of a work of art. Ewa Bobrowska’s book can be read in several ways: as a guide to contemporary (mainly American) art that requires participation, and as a guide to contemporary (mainly postmodern) philosophy while visualising some, even very abstract, statements. These two diverse fields of contemporary art discourse and philosophy meet in this work and illuminate each other, giving the reader an extraordinary opportunity to understand the contemporary world of images and ideas. What is particularly worth emphasising is the part of the work that refers to ethical threads: it shows a little-known part of contemporary philosophy and, at the same time, the author’s extraordinary sensitivity.     Description: Politeness is a key means by which we maintain interpersonal relationships. This book is the first comprehensive study of politeness in Finnish. Based on linguistic and pragmatic research, the book spans three parts. The first part is theoretical and historical, summarising three waves of politeness research, describing politeness as a cultural and historical phenomenon. The second part is empirical, providing an example of the study of im/politeness from outsiders’ perspectives—that, is French people living in Finland and Finns living or having lived in France. The focus group discussions ranged from definitions of politeness and differences of behaviour, to learning and teaching as well as to changes to politeness norms within society. The third part summarises the conclusions and offers an epilogue. This reader-friendly book includes exercises and recommended readings, and is welcomed by researchers and students working on politeness and, more broadly, relational work.

    Description: The book addresses the problem of the influence of copyright law on modern modes of functioning and understanding of literature. This problem is situated in a context of Law and Literature studies and in particular within the cultural studies of copyright, which are summarised in chapter one. The history of copyright law and related literary discussions is recapitulated in chapter two. In the next chapters, the analysis is focused on literary discussions in which copyright law is a directly posed problem, or it is indicated only as context. Particular attention is paid to: philological genealogical research (and texts by Wacław Borowy and John Livingstone Lowes); discussion surrounding T.S. Eliot’s poem ‘The Waste Land’; the debate provoked by Karol Irzykowski’s article ‘Plagiatowy charakter przełomów literackich w Polsce’ [‘The Plagiarising Character of Literary Breakthroughs in Poland’]; analysis of copyright law in the writings of Jacques Derrida and in the novel Muza dalekich podróży [The Muse of Long-Distance Travels] by Teodor Parnicki; finally, anthologies Future of Copyright published at the beginning of the twenty-first century in Poland. In the last chapter, the analysed problems are situated in the context of the debate on the commodification of literature in capitalist societies.

    Description: The book presents the biographies and work lists of 126 Finnish women composers born between 1784 and 1909. Based on large-scale archival research, it is the first comprehensive historical account of Finnish women composers and their cultural heritage. The authors draw on feminist music history and the sociohistorical approach to find out who these women were, what kind of music they wrote, and how their careers reflected European cultural and social history. The treatise highlights the influence of girls’ schools, women’s suffrage movements and other socio-political developments on the musical culture of women. Concepts such as “composer”, “woman” and “Finnish” were assumed to be open and inclusive throughout the research, in terms of both musical style and diversity in cultural background. In concentrating on music-making by women, the book opens up radically new vistas on Finland’s music and cultural history, and it rectifies previous erroneous conceptions about women’s composership and their artistic work. In short, it exposes the richness in the sonic and intellectual heritage of Finnish women composers, as well as its significance in society today.

    Description: Culture as a Verb is a book on what I call new humanities of a wide and vastly varied orientation, direction, turns, and simply interests, interconnecting in opposition to the principles of contemporary theory of humanistic cognition. For, if contemporary knowledge is presented as bodiless, impersonal, static, external and neutral (unengaged), then the new humanities inquiries are led on the basis of different principles: embodied knowledge, personalised (participating), actively-acting (intervening cognitively), penetrating the research field and situated (engaged). This is a very significant change . . . With it, we go from a culture of disinterested observation, founded on the myth of the contemplative view of the whole external world, to a real culture of participative action, reconciled with perspectivity and the fragmentary nature of cognitive actions of a subject, who forges a path to reality, from within and by their own actions.

    Description: This book is the first monograph concerned with a feminist reading of Polish contemporary poetry to utilise tools of affective methodologies. It seeks to establish the extent to which affects contribute to the process of collective forms of existence. The book’s main thesis assumes affects to be the triggers of action, particularly of critically modifying established narratives about emotive histories of societies which include the allotment of the capacity to feel in order to coercively classify the actors and actresses of collective life. Poetry, as a very particular instance of those various affective machineries, becomes yet another version of collective memory. Poetical representations, acting in synergy with transformations of the contemporary subject, operate on three levels: firstly, by reproducing normative images of womanhood in its relations with surroundings, secondly, by disturbing the said images through an, often critical, reformulating of them, or thirdly, by becoming postulated variants of those transformations. The semantic dominants one can find in recent women’s poetry that, at the same time, constitute a portion of the broader symbolic feminine capital being a unified construct edifying the social discourses, pertain to the category of disease/illness, seeing, trauma and shame, the affective work, love, migration, and community.

    Description: The author identifies selected aspects of the history of attention and exposes the peculiar relation between philosophy and literature against this background. The task of describing the world, not finished by phenomenology, is taken up by attentive poetry: it can complete the project of portraying the visible world, while keeping the rules of perceptive faith, but also being mindful of the constraints of language at the same time. After breaking contact between word and object, the poet becomes the one who brings the spirit of mankind closer to the world. In the context of twentieth-century dilemmas and projections, attention turns out to be not only a simple consequence of a certain aesthetic choice, but instead, choosing attention gains a crucial importance, rendering it a tool of re-vindicating the lost reality. Attentive poetry, that is such poetry, which does not allow itself to get carried away with language in whichever direction, but tames its anarchy, and does not accept a finished world, rejecting the temptation of relying on easy knowledge, is complemented by attentive reflection in this study: a reflection which is not prone to putting too much faith in the exclusivity of its own accomplishments.     Description: It is generally recognized that in early modern society, the position of the church and clergy was very central. As many historians have stated over the decades, the church and state were closely connected and their power structures and ideologies supported each other. However, when studying the social and public role of the church and clergy, it soon becomes quite clear how pervasive this phenomenon was. The church not only created but also maintained and acted as a part of international, national, and local communities, structures, and cultures that connected people regardless of their social status and gender. The church was a spiritual, administrative, and social institution and experience environment, whose tasks, scope, and meanings changed and intertwined with the development, needs, and requirements of society. In this book, we investigate from different perspectives the motives and different means by which the church and clergy came to play a significant part in early modern society. In this volume, the church is considered both as an administrative institution and as a social space and cultural structure. Hence, we do not focus on the history of theology or doctrinal questions. Instead, we consider the social and public roles and meanings of the church. The church as such is understood in this book as transnational, a strong national and local institution, and also a space and structure. The church had its own institutionalized place in society and its activities and rights were defined by law (Church law 1696, the Law of the Swedish kingdom 1734) and by the decrees given by the Royal Majesty. The church had its own archbishop-led administrative organization under the Royal Majesty and it worked in close cooperation with the Crown administration and county governors. In this volume, we understand the clergy as church servants, a trained and appointed professional group, a separate estate (social class), and also as a wide social network constructed by their families. The approach of this book is social science history. In other words, the book examines the church and the clergy as an integral part of society and the individual communities who lived in the current Finnish territory during the early modern era. The topic is examined on the basis of three conceptual themes reflecting important new areas of research in the study of the social significance of the church and clergy: (1) the clergy and family as part of the community, (2) the church as a jointly built space, and (3) the church as an arena for interaction, knowledge, and politics. We approach this multidimensionality using different research questions, sources, methods, and theoretical approaches. The volume focuses on the 17th to 19th centuries, but many of the church and clergy-related phenomena are much older, and some of them extend to the present, so the articles also move beyond this time frame.

    Description: The Centre Party of Finland was represented in almost all cabinets for decades, and it often held the post of prime minister during the reign of President Urho Kekkonen. When Kekkonen’s deteriorating health forced him to resign in 1981, the Centre Party, formerly the Agrarian Union, was in front of the crisis. The party was deeply divided along the lines of who would be the best candidate to succeed Kekkonen. The schism had prevailed for years, and contemporaries suspected the party would split up or at least lose its dominant position in Finnish politics. Besides, the numbers of core supporters making up the party, agrarians, were constantly diminishing. In addition, the Finnish party system was in a state of flux. The Finnish People’s Democratic League was in a deep downward spiral, while the Conservative Party’s support was ascendant. The power struggle between the three ‘big’ parties, the Centre Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Conservative Party, was fierce. The study describes and analyses how the Center Party survived the challenges it faced. How was the cohesion of the party rebuilt and maintained? How did the Centre Party manage to survive the inter-party contests and end up being the strongest party in the elections of 1991? The study is firmly based on source material from the party organization of the Centre Party and other relevant political actors, such as President Mauno Koivisto. The book provides new information on both Finnish domestic and foreign politics and the power struggles among the parties and leading political figures.

    Description: In Part I, Ryszard Nycz formulates an opinion on the topical specifics of the humanities’ studies; the opinion is rooted in the traditions of the discipline (literary studies), the ability of its influential orientation (intertextual poetics), as well as the writings of T. W. Adorno, one of the most astute philosophers and researchers of modern culture. In Part II, the author drafts a modified formula for carrying out the theory of literature, the aim of which is to avoid not merely its marginalisation, but its breaking-up (and the assigning of it to anthropology and/or cultural studies in particular). In Part III, the author endeavours to delineate the tasks of literary criticism, exposed to challenges generated by the changes in the function and status of national literature, models of identity, and in the relationships between the global and local dimension of contemporary culture. In Part IV, case studies are used to critically test the traditional view of the solely-applied character of interpretation against theory. The last part, ‘Literature: A Reading of a Letter’, acts as a summary. In it, the author depicts a concept of literature precisely as poetics of experience, as well as drafting a sketch of the theory of its understanding. As part of this theory, in the entirety of the practices and procedures of getting to know it, the author distinguishes three separate (in some aspects) tasks: spontaneous understanding, intellectually rigorous interpretation, and the experience of reading.

    Description: In recent decades, the focus of Folklore Studies has shifted from analysing the products of oral traditions as texts to examining the ways in which people use and produce these items, and the areas of study have broadened to include vernacular cultures and genres in diverse verbal and material forms. As evident from the introduction and twelve chapters of this collection, these interests are today shared by several disciplines that cooperate in the area of cultural studies.     Description: In her book, Katarzyna Liszka provides the reader with a clearly outlined map of the main sides of the debate on the ‘division of labour of memory’ after the Holocaust, examines the arguments, which are used in this dispute, together with an analysis of ethical implications, which, according to the author, have a fundamental significance for the majority of Jewish thinkers taking a stance in this debate. This angle, with the focus on the plural ‘ethics of memory’ in the beginning of the work, allows the author to connect various idioms of philosophy, theology and sociology of the twentieth century, as complementary elements of reflection framed as a way of remembering. In this perspective, the subsequent notional mediations, corrections of approaches taken by Hannah Arendt, Avishai Margalit, or Zygmunt Bauman, become an indirect proof of the crystallisation, not only of the aforementioned community of memory work, but also of the transformation of ethical and legal categories related to the issue of the community of universal ethics, which the author writes about in the conclusion of her work, with reference to the reflections of Natan Sznaider and Daniel Levi. Different kinds of cultural transitions and migrant traditions are connected with transnationality. Studying the multilingualism of literary texts or diverse cultural identities, transnationality is a prolific angle. In the 102nd Yearbook of the Kalevala Society Foundation, the topics cover for example migration and return migration, material things crossing borders, and places of music culture. At a more theoretical level we are asking how studying transnationality enriches the disciplines with roots in the national sciences.

    Description: Alex Matson (1888–1972) is an important Finnish literary critic and essayist, whose literary reviews and collections of essays have made a vital contribution to the development of Finland's postwar literary generation. Born in Finland as the son of a sailor, Matson moved as a young child with his family to Hull in England, where he went to school. In the 1910s, he moved back to Finland, where he at first established himself as painter associated with the expressionist November Group, an important Finnish artistic movement at the time. In the interbellum, he moved from fine arts to literature. In the 1920s and 1930s, he published several novels, but more important was his work as transmitter of international literary ideas to Finland. Together with his first wife, Kersti Bergroth, he edited the literary journal Sininen kirja (""The Blue Book""; 1927–1930), which was inspired by the writings of John Middleton Murry and Katherine Mansfield. Sininen kirja is the most international literary journal in Finnish history to date and introduced Finland to the most significant modernist writers of the first half of the 20th century (Gottfried Benn, Jean Cocteau, Alfred Döblin, T. S. Eliot, Aldous Huxley, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Paul Valéry, Virginia Woolf). During the Second World War, Matson worked for the State Communications Agency, which was responsible for disseminating relevant information about Finland to other nations and for informing Finns of relevant developments abroad. It was also tasked with studying the prevailing mood among the population in Finland. In Matson's unpublished wartime diaries, one can see the first symptoms of a shift in Finnish culture away from Germany and towards Anglo-Saxon culture. From the 1940s onwards, Matson recommended new English and American novels as a part of his work as reader for Finnish publishing houses, and he also translated works by Joyce, Hemingway and Steinbeck. With the help of a network of international literary critics, Matson became acquainted with New Criticism, which he introduced to Finland before it became established among academic researchers. He was often critical of academic literary studies, but his seminal essay works Romaanitaide (""On the Prose Novel""; 1947), John Steinbeck (1948), Kaksi mestaria (""Two Masters"", on Tolstoy and Dostoevsky; 1950) as well as his impressive conversational skills were instrumental in introducing knowledge about the principles of the prose novel to several authors (including Väinö Linna, Lauri Viita, and Hannu Salama), and contributed to their views of literature. Matson emphasized the importance of reading and understanding high-quality literature for the wellbeing of society.

    Description: Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire during the years 1808–1917. At this time nationalism as well as other ideologies reached Finland from Europe, which strengthened the willingness to change both in society and on a governmental level. The Fennoman movement, which was a movement focusing both on language and on nationalism, became the core of the Finnish self-perception. The goal was to define Finland as a coherent and separate country in relation to its neighbouring countries. Collecting folk poems and learning to know one’s home country became essential. People saw the Kalevala poems as a way to understand and define the Finnish identity and the history of the Finnish people. Especially young people with a background in academia were intrigued by these ideas. University students collected poems all over the Grand Duchy of Finland as well as in the Russian part of Carelia, in Sweden, Norway and in Ingria. Students who collected these folk poems also wrote travelogues about their travels and all this material was handed over to The Finnish Literature Society. These documents are unique and there has not been much research done on them, especially with the focus on how the young academic generation during the age of autonomy defined their home country, their national self-perception, themselves and the commoners living in the rural parts of the country. This book reviews travelogues written by one hundred university students who travelled in the country collecting folk poems during 1836–1917. The book offers insight into how the students described Finland and what it meant to be Finnish. Travelogues can be defined as a sort of hybrid of texts. They consist of a mixture of letters, journals, biographical texts and travel books. Consequently, the image that the students depict of Finland is in this study based upon research perspectives and methods used in textual research, oral history and travel literature. The travelogues written by students previously evoked the interest of researchers who mainly studied certain traits of poem collectors, tradition bearers or poems. However, the travelogues contain plenty of information about the lives of the people who lived in the areas where the poems were collected. The descriptions of Finland in the travelogues do not represent the “real” 19th century Finland, but instead it is a story written and created by university students. The characteristics that are presented in The Land of Hope are based on how the intelligentsia perceived “real” Finnishness as opposed to the uneducated commoners living in the rural parts of the country. The most notable themes in the travelogues are the state and the future of the society and of being Finnish. Another theme is the otherization of those who were uneducated commoners. These themes describe the fears and hopes that university students had about Finland. They also show us that the travelogues were ideological texts about Finland and Finnishness that united the collectors of folk poetry. This book studies the collection of folk poetry in the context of the ideologies during the age of autonomy and it explains what the collection of poems meant and who were involved in it. Furthermore, the book gives an insight into the possibilities to pursue academic studies and it also presents the most essential sources of students’ knowledge about Finland at that point of time.

    Description: The nine articles in this edited volume [Education and Social Class] scrutinise the class question within the Finnish education system, as a hidden, lived and experienced phenomenon, entwined with power. The book is structured around three topical perspectives. The first part deals with the question of social mobility. Empirical research topics include examples of achieving prestigious fields of education and the inheritance of the most prestigious professions, connections of class position to education through the educational experiences of working-class-based business students, and the ways in which academic world encounters with working-class culture in the university work of working-class and academically educated women. The second part of the book examines education as a form of capital defining the life course and social class. Topics covered include the connections of life stage of adolescence and class position, Bourdieusian analysis of educational choices and class positions, and opportunities for on-the-job learning and self-development in accordance with the class position of wage earners. The third part focuses on the education system and its structures. The dynamics of education and reproduction are analysed by using as empirical research objects the cross-generational reproduction of social relations in the curricula of basic education, the meaning of the language used in school as cultural capital, and the links between class position and perspectives that promote the raising of the age of compulsory education.

    Description: The theoretical weakness of history of art and the cognitive inefficiency of studies on visual culture cause images to remain a challenge for us. Iconophilia is an alternative perspective, within which they are (finally) taken seriously. The history of iconophilia in French humanities (in pictorial semiology in particular) serves the purpose of drafting the proposed future of the thought on images. It is not about a traditional presentation of the history of the notion of an image, but about reflecting on the various strategies of understanding images in the humanities, the effect of which is theory.     Description: This volume comprises texts created on the basis of three-fold meetings: the first kind were constituted by lectures led by invited guests, representing various fields and areas of research, which, in some necessary simplification, can be divided into historiography (Ewa Domańska), philosophy (Agata Bielik-Robson), literary and memory studies (Michael Rothberg), and philosophy of literature (Michał Paweł Markowski). The lectures were accompanied by workshops, whose leaders present their texts in the second part of the work, and the third part is made up of notes from panel talks. As per the nature of these types of sessions, they present themselves as highly intense (various meetings from morning until evening), as well as showing the unavoidable variety in outlooks, which is one of the major advantages of such events. Another advantage is a slightly more ‘personalist’ encounter, not so much with text, but with the figure of an author, and thus also with the personality of a researcher. What became the idea bringing all these activities together was memory, understood and treated in very different ways. The variety of starting points and views on the forms and places of the functioning of memory then transformed itself into an abundance of experiences of the ‘originators’ and the richness of feelings (also of those imprinting themselves in memory) of the ‘receivers’.

    Description: The nineteenth century has been called an age of monuments. In some places even one piece made a difference. This book is a study of the intellectual background and physical making of Finland’s first public sculpture, the statue of Professor Henrik Gabriel Porthan by Carl Eneas Sjöstrand. The idealised but sombre Porthan was born under the influence of German neoclassicism. Development on the project was slow but sure. The Swedish artist had to be supported over three years while he was putting together his first monumental piece in Munich and Rome, after which came another three years wait before the cast arrived to Finland. The bronze sculpture, commissioned by the Finnish Literary Society and raised by public subscriptions from people of all classes, was unveiled in the city of Turku in September 1864. Finns took some pride in the fact that, unlike other nations that had raised monuments to kings and generals, here the first place was given to a scholar. In this study Sjöstrand’s pioneering bronze is placed in a wider context and compared with works by his precursors and contemporaries in the international sculptor colony of Rome.

    Description: Alongside Bentham the guardian of the weak and the subordinate, sensitive to other’s suffering and deeply engaged in the fight for a better future and a more just legal system, there also exists a Bentham the unmitigated demiurge, with uncontrollable ambitions, incessantly creating soulless and authoritarian worlds of control and discipline. There is much that would suggest the English philosopher was pushed towards authoritarianism by the striving to provide a sense of security to the landed classes, and by fear of phenomena such as panic and social unrest. At the same time, as work on specific projects progressed, the noble impulses which often underpin them became weak, and they were replaced, under the influence of perfectionist fears and passions, by the thirst for complete control and total discipline.     Description: This is the first study to examine Finnish trauma fiction in detail. The book discusses the novels of Katja Kettu, Sofi Oksanen, Elina Hirvonen and Emmi Itäranta, where historical and collective traumas meet stories of personal vulnerability. Traumatic Memory in Contemporary Prose Fiction addresses war traumas and marks left by terrorism, colonialism, domestic violence and sexual violence, and analyses the aspects of ecological trauma and future threats. The study combines the latest discussions on cultural memory studies and trauma theory with critical perspectives offered by feminist criticism and research in transnationalism.     Description: We will be following the departure of cinema ‘towards virtuality’ (towards new ways of creating, understanding and existence of cinema in the times of transformations of media technology) primarily from the perspective of selected artistic practices of three artists: Peter Greenaway (who often repeats the argument about the ‘death’ of traditional cinema and the birth of new ways of depiction), Lynn Hershman Leeson (American artist of the ‘wider cinema’) and Mike Figgis, who reflected on various types of cinematic image and the cinema of the digital age in his autothematic films. The authors will also discuss cinema in the wider context of cultural reflection. Questions on the ‘virtualisation’ of culture will require an attempt at defining the notion of ‘virtuality’, and a tracing of its journey through different levels of cultural discourses, as well as linking it back to the analysed works. Towards Virtuality… is a book about cinema (its creators, works and characters), steeped in technological, philosophical, scientific and, more generally, cultural transformations of modernity.

    Description: In the current digital media environment, legacy newspapers and their readers are often regarded as obsolete. For media executives and many journalists, the future of news is exclusively digital. Given the economic uncertainties facing the industry, news producers’ eyes are focused on audience metrics and their capacity to shed light on readers' preferences. This book sets out to analyse news reading from the perspective of the audience. Employing interviews as well as the so called obsläs method, it examines how readers of two Finnish regional newspapers, Hämeen Sanomat and Karjalainen, navigate in three distinct architectures of the newspaper: printed, digital replica and online news application. The assumption underlying the analysis is that each of these user interfaces favour somewhat differing reading protocols and routines. The empirical analysis responds to the big question pondered by editors and publishers: Where are the readers? It appears that most of the participants of the study tended to move from one architecture to another depending on their contextual and situational needs. In this comparison, the strengths of a printed newspaper seemed evident for many, while the balance between the pros and cons of the digital environment was more mixed. In addition to reporting the findings of the empirical audience study, this book evaluates the future of newspapers in the context of economic statistics and media policies. While the newspaper business in Finland struggles with increasing costs and volatility of income, it may well rely on the robust newspaper reading culture among the Finnish reading public.

This book includes scientific articles concerning the works of Kalle Päätalo. It also gives ideas for the research that can be carried out in the future. The authors of this book are researchers in the fields of history, linguistics and literature, respectively. The research results presented in this book speak for the fact that the Iijoki series is a significant source material for future research, for example from the point of view of oral history, language variation, metalanguage, swearing and the reader’s reception. The possibilities for future research seem to be quite plentiful.

    Description: In this book [titled Home, welfare work and vulnerability] the authors take the reader on welfare workers’ home visits to clients in need of support in their living. Welfare workers refer to professionals in health and social care who in the book are represented among others by social workers, social care workers and nurses. The main concepts of the book are home, welfare work and vulnerability and these are contemplated from different angles. Welfare work entails encountering people who are in vulnerable situations in the midst of their everyday lives. They may need support in coping with their mental health, with physical illnesses, with the challenges of achieving sobriety and recovery or perhaps with the difficulties accompanying old age. On the one hand their ability to act is limited and weak but on the other they have many kinds of strengths and resources. The book addresses a significant turning point in welfare services and work at which the objective is defined as the right of every individual to their own home and making living at home feasible for as long as possible. In the last fifty years or so many societal factors have made possible the dismantling of institutions, the reduction of places and the shortening of stays in institutions, the further development of care in the community, the construction of small residential and care facilities and most recently the further development of services to be taken into people’s homes. The last stage of this dismantling of institutions is referred to in the book as the “home turn”. As a societal change the home turn is complex – and that is how it is approached in the book. When one’s own home is the main place in which welfare policy and work are implemented, it is important to scrutinize more closely what actually occurs there and what special issues are connected to this given context. The book offers a timely point of view on the development of welfare services and the grass-root level welfare work done in the homes. It draws on interaction research based on ethnomethodology and human geography. Research data consist of recordings of home visits, researcher’s field diaries and interviews with clients and workers. The work includes both chapters providing conceptual and theoretical overviews and empirical research on the encounters between client and worker(s) on home visits. Welfare work accomplished in people’s homes entails many tensions and ethical issues which are analysed in the book and made visible through the means of research.

    Description: Nothing exceptional happened in front of the youth association building in Kalajoki on 9 September 1953. There was a minor confrontation between regional police forces and local youth, but hundreds of similar events happened in small municipalities across Finland. The event took about ten minutes, nobody was seriously hurt, and collective feelings quickly calmed down. However, after extensive investigations, the regional prosecutor thought otherwise and prosecuted half a dozen local men for rebellion against the state in January 1954. The district court agreed. The municipality was shocked, and the Finnish society was taken by surprise. The case ended up in Supreme Court. This book analyses why and how the last rebellion in the history of Finland occurred in a tiny municipality on the west coast of Finland. The analysis is based on historical microsociology that integrates the insights of microhistory and microsociology into event structure analysis and collective memory studies.

    Description: Matti Kurikka (1863–1915) is a multi-dimensional and controversial character in Finnish history. He was a playwright, a journalist, a socialist, and a theosophist, as well as a speaker for sexual emancipation and women's rights. Kurikka was born in Ingria, and his activities spanned not only Finland, but also Australia and North America, in both of which he led utopian communities. This biographical study explores Kurikka as a literary and political figure and a builder of utopias, whose life opens fascinating views on the societal and cultural currents of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book critically re-evaluates earlier research on Kurikka and highlights forgotten phases of his life by using new source materials found in three continents. The sources include digitized newspapers and periodicals, Kurikka's plays and non-fictional books, oral history, and political cartoons.

    Description: Finnish psychiatric practice has been heavily based on institutionalization, and mental hospitals have played important cultural and historical roles in Finland. Our multidisciplinary research focuses on the bodily, spatial, affective, and multisensory aspects of the memories of patients, relatives, staff, and their children. The memories were collected and archived in the Finnish Literature Society in 2014–2015. These 92 written pieces cover the period from the 1930s to the 2010s. They reflect significant changes in Finnish psychiatry and provide crucial insights into the various meanings of mental hospitals in people’s lives, and the social and cultural forces that shape attitudes to and ideas about mental health problems, psychiatric care, and service users today. Drawing on our backgrounds in history, artistic research, and visual, cultural and literary studies, we provide new ways of reading and interpreting the memories and experiences in psychiatry. The study discusses memory, mental hospitals as lived spaces, the history of Finnish psychiatry and the relation between the memories of the different groups of writers. The chapters approach memories from the perspectives of affects and atmospheres, violence and abuse, everyday life at the hospital in the 1930s, feelings of fear and safety in the memories of the children of the staff, and the historically and culturally contingent tensions between hospitals and homes.

    Description: Finnish Lapland is a historical borderland of Finnish and Sámi cultures. Such a region offers various social-political identifications for people to choose: people may see it possible to identify as Finnish, Laplanders, Lappish or Sámi, for instance. However, the choices have social and political limits, and some identifications are more contested than others. The book examines the processes of identifications in the middle parts of Lapland, just south of the region defined as Sámi homeland in Finland. While the study reveals differences and nuances in people’s thinking, it also shows that there is a recognizable sense of shared cultural specifity around the region. Lapland is conceptualized as an extraordinary place with unusual nature and history, characterized by particular livelihoods (such as reindeer herding) and lively cultural interaction. The book concludes that while Lapland is extraordinary as a historical dwelling region of indigenous Sámi, it may be politically significant to recognize it as a unique borderland of cultures with features of its own.

Alongside contemporary literary authors, the anthology studies diverse contemporary textual phenomena from TV shows to online fan theories and survivalist blogs. The essays compiled in this anthology tentatively apply the theories of the post-postmodern to contemporary texts to see how they might open up for analysis within their new theoretical frameworks or challenge them.The introduction, co-written by all the authors of this volume, introduces the most influential theories of post-postmodernism and contextualizes them within broader intellectual trends of the early 21st Century. The three essays comprising the first part of the volume discuss some of the theories of the postmodern in relation to contemporary works that seem to challenge them. Yet they also strive to clarify and sharpen some of the ideas proposed in the theories of the post-postmodern.The second part of the volume aims to show that it is not only the contemporary texts that move beyond the postmodern – the ways of reading literature and interpreting artworks in different media are also changing.     Description: Contrary to the secularism thesis of the 20th century, religion did not disappear from the Western experience. Rather, religiosity took on new forms, which emphasized individuality, experientiality, and corporeality, and highlighted lifestyle consumption. These new spiritualities came to be understood as the opposite of religiosity: people identified themselves as being not religious, but spiritual. The book examines new spiritualities as a concept, a phenomenon, and a subject of research. It introduces the history of the concept and the different past approaches in the research field, and discusses the diversity of the phenomenon of new spiritualities, especially in 21st century Finland, through various case studies. The book shows the multiple ways in which new spiritualities intertwine with different sectors of the society and blur spirituality’s boundary with religion, health care, art, and popular culture, for example. The book is the first book-length presentation in Finnish of the field of new spiritualities.

    Description: Sofi Oksanen is the most visible and widely discussed Finnish author of the 21st century, yet her novels have gained less attention than her public performances. This study shifts the focus from the author’s persona to her literary art, proposing to read Oksanen’s fiction from the methodological viewpoint of the rhetorical theory of narrative. Accordingly, Oksanen’s six novels published to date – Stalinin lehmät, Baby Jane, Puhdistus, Kun kyyhkyset katosivat, Norma, and Koirapuisto – are considered as examples of authorial rhetoric and ethics, as narrative and textual constructions, and as affective readerly experiences. Instead of only following the rhetorical theory’s emphasis on character, plot, and progression, however, the study develops a new kind of narrative rhetoric, which also pays attention to language and politics. In the study, Sofi Oksanen emerges as a feminist narrative artist, who employs fiction as a serious rhetorical resource in order to say something worthwhile about the past history as well as the contemporary world.

    Description: Human lives are crucially shaped by encounters of otherness – or, rather, various othernesses. This book explores the ethical challenge of developing an appropriate and respectful relation to other human beings by analyzing a number of historical and cultural cases of relating to the other. The topics range from barbarism, racist stereotypes, female rhetoric, and vampires to philosophical analyses of Finnish writers like Eino Leino and Väinö Linna, and from lyrical depictions of pain to an “antitheodicist” reflection on Primo Levi’s Holocaust writing. A chapter on what it means to take a critical distance to other human beings in the context of the covid-19 pandemic concludes the volume. The authors approach these diverse issues (which are all aspects of the same basic problem of understanding and acknowledging otherness) from the perspective of an interdisciplinary humanistic reflection integrating literary analysis and philosophical argumentation.

    Description: This study explores the narration of existential feelings, or feelings of being in the world, in post-war Finnish prose fiction. The book presents five case studies which address modern individuals’ struggles in boundary situations of their lives. Rigorous readings of the works of Kerttu-Kaarina Suosalmi, Lassi Nummi, Marko Tapio, Tyyne Saastamoinen and Eeva-Liisa Manner all show the influence of French existentialism and its predecessors on post-war Finnish modernism for the first time in literary studies. The outsider figures and their experiences of the absurd, which have enticed the cultural imagination since ancient cults and the Book of Job, connect to the atmosphere of shared melancholy in post-war Finnish culture and society. The study participates in the rich contemporary debates on the effects of literature by focusing on less-discussed aspects of bodily feeling, affect, emotion and mood in late Finnish modernism. The book’s methodological contribution to narrative theory is that it combines a phenomenological analysis of reading with a rhetorical theory of narrative and politically informed, multidisciplinary emotion studies. The five case studies show how modernist outsider prose fiction in Finland resorts to irony, metafiction, allegory and the imaginative to generate ethically challenging narrative tension and an ambivalence of negative and positive emotion in readers. The opposing impulses of the aesthetic response produce an openness of interpretation. This openness provides us with the possibility of a more complex cultural understanding of emotion and ethics in the lives of strangers within literature and outside it.

    Description: Valco (1976–1980) was a state-owned company that manufactured cathode ray tubes for the television industry. The company’s scandalous failure has been widely identified as one of the largest investment errors in Finland’s economic history. This book is the first in-depth study of the roots, events, and consequences of that project. This study analyses Valco from a microhistorical perspective, looking at the numerous factors that led to its failure, from the company’s founding process to investigations after its demise. These events are linked to broader phenomena in economic and business history, such as the changing economic policy of the government and the emergence of global supply chains in the electronics industry. Valco is a significant single case with a concrete impact on Finland’s economic history. First, it changed the general perception of state-owned companies and, because of this, also more general perceptions of the role of the state in the economy. As a result, the initiative to develop the electronics industry was transferred to private companies such as Nokia. Second, Valco’s case revealed the problems of state ownership of companies in a very concrete way. Due to Valco’s failure, the objectives of state ownership were clarified, and the corporate governance system was modernised. In this way, Valco is linked to the modernization of Finnish state capitalism from the 1970s onwards.

    Description: The book focuses on intangible and tangible heritage, language and vernacular religion of the Ingrians, Setos and Votes, three Finnic ethnic minorities sharing a long-standing identification with the Russian Orthodox faith. Written by 16 authors, the chapters are mainly based on nineteenth- and twentieth-century materials. The research history and collecting of folklore are also discussed.The historical area of the Ingrians and Votes is located in Ingria, adjacent to St. Petersburg, while the Setos have inhabited both sides of the border of southern Estonia and Russia. All three groups live on the borderline of the Eastern and Western Churches and cultural realms.Currently, the Ingrian and Votic languages are extremely endangered, while the Seto language has approximately 12,000 speakers. There is a high local interest in the maintenance and revitalisation of all three languages and cultural traditions.

    Description: The great change in European relations with Russia took place in 1478 when Muscovy replaced the trading Republic of Novgorod as a neighbor of Sweden, Livonia and Lithuania. Western Europe was since that year bordering to a bellicose great power with large resources causing dread. The feelings of dread caused by Russia with Czars like Ivan the Terrible became a standing theme in printed matter as well as politics and the image of Russia became very much similar to the image of Turkey, which threatened Europe from South-East. Various, usually rather negative, stereotype expressions characterized the vocabulary of the 16th century. The Peace of Stolbova in 1617 started a period of successive change. The era of Sweden as a Great Power led to growing knowledge about Russia in almost every respect, but it was still based on the already accepted stereotypes. They started, however, typically to seem more diluted and thin with time. The image of Russia as a threat was to a growing extent replaced by an image of a possibility. The perhaps most remarkable but rather unoriginal printed Swedish description of Russia of the era was Regni Muschovotici Sciographia, published by Petrus Petrejus. At the final stage of Sweden’s era as a great power there was a substantial widening but also polarization of the information on Russia. The Russian reform process during Tsar Peter I also began to influence the minds after the turn of the century in 1700. One of the principal describers of this process was Lars Johan Malm (Ehrenmalm), whose large manuscript about the power of the Russian Empire of that time, Några Anmärkningar Angående det Ryska Rijkets Nuvarande Macht from 1714, never reached the printers due to intervention from censors.

    Description: This edited book is the third in a series of yearbooks that introduces the principles and applicability of the method of empathy-based stories. The book presents ten empirical studies which all use this method as a tool for data collection. In addition, the work examines the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories as a method and as part of qualitative research. The research articles in the book provide a current overview of the change in different work and operating environments. These environments include various educational institutions from elementary school to universities, social media, and human resource management. Studies examine the social inclusion, participation and agency of pupils, students, young people, and professionals, as well as the professional and ethical challenges of those working in new environments. The method of empathy-based stories is used to observe, for example, university students’ interpretations of involvement in the curriculum process, pupils' views on co-teaching, different forms of agency of young people who experience sexual harassment online, and the subjectivity of recruiters and the reasons for recruitment choices. Methodologically, the book focuses on the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories and considers the characteristics of the method among qualitative research methods. Reflecting on the research articles, the work discusses what kind of requirements and challenges the method poses for both the researcher and the respondents. The book provides guidelines for evaluating the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories, while participating also in a general discussion of the reliability, potential, and limitations of qualitative research. The book indicates how the method of empathy-based stories can be applied to a wide variety of research in different contexts. The strength of the method is its ability to utilize the respondents' imagination, thus providing the researchers with opportunities to find new perspectives and invent propositions. The book also provides practical examples of how the method can be used in research.

    Description: This collection of articles sheds light on the role of human language in interspecies interaction. The book shows that language is not necessarily what separates us from other creatures. It can also be seen as yet another dimension of human existence that is deeply rooted in our shared history and everyday life with other living beings. This volume contains six individual research articles, two short reviews, an opening introduction to the themes of the book, and an extensive, theoretical closing chapter. The studies draw on methodologies and theoretical approaches including conversation analysis and a cognitive, usage-based approach to grammatical constructions. The book further explores the interfaces of linguistics, biosemiotics, and posthumanism. The studies show how linguistic and interactional approaches can contribute to our understanding of how human and non-human animals communicate with each other during embodied activities, how human language users make sense of interspecies encounters in speaking to or about animals, and how human language is thereby impregnated by the presence of other species. The individual research articles study, e.g., interaction with co-present animals, dialectal cow calls, parliamentary speeches, narratives of nature observation, and historical laws.

    Description: The present volume is a multidisciplinary collection of research articles exploring language use, language contact and multilingualism in the history of Turku, the first town in Finland, founded around the turn of the fourteenth century. Consisting of an introduction by the editors and nine case studies in the fields of linguistics, history, archeology, and literary and cultural studies, the volume participates in a wider discussion on multilingual communities while offering a closer look into linguistic encounters in Turku and its immediate vicinity. The volume covers the period from the Middle Ages (c. 1100–1500) to the latter half of the twentieth century. The case studies illustrate the wide array of languages, linguistic varieties and registers that the inhabitants and travellers used in their daily lives, the specific contexts in which certain languages were used, and the effects of these linguistic encounters at personal, social or institutional levels.

    Description: Starting from the discussion of the concepts of formality and informality, the paper first examines and analyzes empirical findings from a survey of German and Polish political advisors, lobbyists and experts on their perceptions of the access channels to politics and of politics to experts in Germany and Poland. Which access channels are chosen and why, how open are they, and what imbalances exist in access to experts and experts’ access to politics? A second section looks at the degree of formalization of advisory processes and access channels in both countries. In a third section, the focus is on interpretations of perceptions of access channels and degree of formalization and their implications for policy advice in Germany and Poland. The Polish sub-study finds a considerable gap between the perceptions of policy experts and lobbyists. While the former group enjoys a relatively high reputation in Poland, the reputation of lobbyists is much worse. In the German sample, the sharpness of the distinction between the reputation of lobbyists/interest representatives on the one hand and expert advisers on the other is less visible than in the Polish survey. The chapter concludes that political expert cultures in Poland and Germany are not congruent with regard to the perception of access channels and the play with formality and informality, but nevertheless show fundamental similarities – above all the fundamentally positive assessment of access channels to expertise. But below some very general similarities, the different perceptions of expert cultures begin to emerge. In both countries, a technocratic culture of expert advice is held in high esteem, but in Germany the assessment of interest-driven expert advice is perceived less negative than in Poland.
    Description: Wychodząc od omówienia pojęć formalności i nieformalności, w artykule najpierw analizowane są wyniki badania przeprowadzonego wśród niemieckich i polskich doradców politycznych, lobbystów i ekspertów w zakresie postrzegania kanałów ich dostępu do polityki oraz polityków do ekspertyzy w Niemczech i Polsce. Jakie kanały dostępu są wybierane i dlaczego, jak bardzo są one otwarte i jakie nierówności istnieją w dostępie polityków do ekspertów i ekspertów do polityki? Druga część tekstu poświęcona jest analizie stopnia sformalizowania procesów doradczych i kanałów dostępu w obu krajach. W trzeciej części skupiono się na interpretacji postrzegania kanałów dostępu i stopnia formalizacji oraz ich implikacji dla doradztwa politycznego w Niemczech i w Polsce. W polskim badaniu cząstkowym stwierdzono znaczny rozdźwięk między percepcją ekspertów ds. polityki a lobbystów. Podczas gdy ta pierwsza grupa cieszy się w Polsce stosunkowo wysoką reputacją, opinia o lobbystach jest znacznie gorsza. W próbie niemieckiej ostrość rozróżnienia między reputacją lobbystów/przedstawicieli grup interesu, z jednej strony, a doradców-ekspertów, z drugiej, jest mniej widoczna niż w badaniu polskim. Rozdział kończy się wnioskiem, że polityczne kultury eksperckie w Polsce i w Niemczech nie są zbieżne pod względem postrzegania kanałów dostępu oraz gry z formalnością i nieformalnością, niemniej jednak wykazują fundamentalne podobieństwa – przede wszystkim zasadniczo pozytywną ocenę kanałów dostępu do wiedzy eksperckiej.     Description: Classical approaches to policy advice envisage a clear division of roles between its providers and recipients, i.e. experts and politicians. However, this dualistic scheme is beginning to erode. In the concept of policy-oriented public advice, which this chapter takes as its starting point, an additional, distinct role is assigned to citizens. Using the heuristic of Römmele and Schober (2011), as well as examples from Germany and Poland, we argue that – under some conditions – ordinary citizens can help develop solutions to complex and ambiguous socio-political challenges. Citizen assemblies offer a methodology that can allow for articulation of citizens’ consultative voice, based on the principle of random selection of participants. The chapter includes a discussion of the characteristics of this format, presents their functions and the boundary conditions that should be met for the use of citizen assemblies to be purposeful and effective. Similarities and differences in the functioning of citizens’ assemblies in Poland and Germany are also presented, particularly regarding the advisory mandate of these bodies.
    Description: Klasyczne ujęcia doradztwa politycznego przewidują wyraźny podział ról między jego dostawcami a odbiorcami, tj. ekspertami a politykami. Ten dualistyczny schemat zaczyna jednak podlegać erozji. W koncepcji ukierunkowanego na politykę doradztwa społecznego, którą za punkt wyjścia obiera niniejszy rozdział, dodatkowa, odrębna rola przypada obywatelom. Posiłkując się heurystyką Römmele i Schobera (2011), jak również przykładami z Niemiec i Polski, stawiamy tezę, że zwykli obywatele mogą pomóc w wypracowaniu rozwiązań dla złożonych i niejednoznacznych wyzwań społeczno-politycznych. Metodyką, która – pod pewnymi warunkami – może pozwolić na artykulację głosu doradczego obywateli są panele obywatelskie, opierające się na zasadzie losowego doboru uczestników. Rozdział prezentuje cechy charakterystyczne tego formatu, omawia ich funkcje oraz warunki brzegowe, które powinny zostać spełnione, by zastosowanie paneli było celowe i skuteczne. Przedstawione są również podobieństwa i różnice w funkcjonowaniu paneli obywatelskich w Polsce i Niemczech, w szczególności w odniesieniu do doradczego mandatu tych gremiów.

    Description: W ostatnich latach coraz większą uwagę zyskują wyzwania stojące przed europejskimi regionami związane ze zmianami strukturalnymi w kierunku zrównoważonego rozwoju. Łużyce, leżące na granicy Niemiec i Polski, doświadczają znacznej presji związanej z transformacją. Krajowe i europejskie programy finansowania, m.in. w ramach Europejskiego Zielonego Ładu, mają na celu łagodzenie skutków odchodzenia od wydobycia i konsumpcji węgla. Niedawno przyjęty unijny Mechanizm Sprawiedliwej Transformacji ma za zadanie wspieranie zrównoważonych zmian strukturalnych poprzez pomoc pracownikom i przyczynianie się do dywersyfikacji gospodarki w najbardziej dotkniętych obszarach. Niniejszy Policy Brief przedstawia trzy rekomendacje związane z wykorzystaniem funduszy UE w polsko-niemieckim obszarze granicznym w celu wspierania sprawiedliwej transformacji. Po pierwsze, fundusze udostępnione w ramach Mechanizmu powinny być wykorzystywane w porozumieniu z regionalnymi interesariuszami w Łużycach w celu uzupełnienia krajowych środków wsparcia. Dalsze programy finansowania ukierunkowane na różne obszary polityki publicznej powinny być wykorzystane w celu wzmocnienia spójności w całym regionie. W tym kontekście szczególnie interesujące są programy zarządzane centralnie przez Komisję Europejską (tzn. nie podlegające zarządzaniu dzielonemu z rządami krajowymi). Ściślejsza współpraca polityczna i gospodarcza, w połączeniu z głębszą wymianą doświadczeń, może przyspieszyć integrację regionalną i ukierunkować procesy przekształceń strukturalnych na osiągnięcie trwałych rezultatów. Użycie tych programów w obszarze granicznym obarczone jest jednak praktycznymi przeszkodami, które należy pokonać. Ponadto powyżej wymienione działania powinny być realizowane zgodne z celami zrównoważonego rozwoju (SDGs), przyczyniać się do osiągnięcia celu, jakim jest neutralność klimatyczna, a także do złagodzenia społecznych skutków transformacji strukturalnej na wszystkich poziomach.

    Description: “Channel Three will entertain you when television gets too serious”, the new entrant in Finland’s broadcast television announced proudly at its launch in 1986. Channel Three was the first fully commercial television channel in the Nordic countries, founded and owned by a group of odd bedfellows: the public broadcaster YLE, its long standing commercial companion MTV and a growing electronics giant Nokia. The plans to start a commercial TV station were first severely opposed by leading politicians, but it was finally approved as a means to fight back international satellite channels and the efforts of major newspaper companies to enter the television market. Drawing from media policy studies and based on archive documents, contemporary media coverage and interviews of the main actors, the book provides a thorough analysis of the stages of Channel Three, indicating how it, despite its short lifespan, contributed profoundly to the commercialization and marketization of television in Finland.

Ensimmäinen osa käsittelee kuntia sote-markkinoiden toimijoina ja hahmottelee uuden elinvoimakunnan toimintamallia. Toinen osa avaa osallisuuden ja asiakaslähtöisyyden teemoja osana palvelujen kehittämistä. Kolmannessa osassa tarkastellaan hankintoja ja erityisesti tulosperusteista hankintaa, joka on verraten uusi palvelujen hankintatapa. Neljäs osa haastaa lukijaa markkinoiden laajempaan tarkasteluun astetta filosofisemmin ja liberalistisemmin. Kokonaisuudessaan teos tarjoaa monipuolisen näkymän sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluihin sekä -markkinoihin. ALIS-hanke toteutettiin vuosina 2013–2016 ja se rahoitettiin Tekesin Innovaatiot sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluissa -ohjelmasta. Hankkeen kohdekaupunkeina olivat Jyväskylä, Tampere ja Turku."

    Description: "Tampere3 project, general knowledge, multicultural education, relocation of upper secondary school in a university campus, educational institution safety, wellbeing at work, successful recruitment process – these topics are discussed in eleven articles of this publication. The empirical data of these articles was collected during winter 2016-2017. Method of empathy based stories (MEBS) is a method for collecting qualitative data in which respondents write a story based on an orientation text, usually referred to as a frame story or a script. At least two different frame stories/scripts need to be formulated. MEBS data analysis is two-fold: firstly qualitative data analysis is based on the thematic framework of the research, furthermore the analysis imitates an empirical study and highlights the influence of the alteration of one factor in the frame story. MEBS has been utilized increasingly in various research fields in Finland since 1982. MEBS is in principle flexible and easy-to-use method, therefore it can be applied to explore a variety of research questions. The topics researched can be theoretically sophisticated and structured. They can be based on earlier research as well as to solve questions of more pragmatic nature. Despite the ostensible simplicity of using MEBS, many aspects need careful consideration and decisions need to be made especially in the data collection phase. So the last chapter of the publication concentrates on the formulation process of frame stories and data collection in an increasingly digitalized and diversified society. This publication is the first volume of the yearbook series introducing MEBS and research."

Näitä kaikkia aiheita käsitellään teoksen 11 tutkimusartikkelissa, joiden empiirinen aineisto on kerätty eläytymismenetelmällä talvella 2016­–2017. Eläytymismenetelmällä tarkoitetaan tiedonhankintamenetelmää, jossa vastaajat kirjoittavat kertomuksen tutkijan antaman, kehyskertomukseksi kutsutun orientaation perusteella. Kehyskertomuksia on aina vähintään kaksi erilaista ja aineisto analysoidaan kahteen kertaan: normaalina tutkimuksen tematiikasta kertovana laadullisena aineistona sekä kokeellisen tutkimuksen asetelmaa imitoiden ja pelkistäen sitä, mikä vastauksissa muuttuu, kun kehyskertomuksessa muutetaan yhtä keskeistä tekijää. Eläytymismenetelmää on käytetty eri tieteenaloilla yhä enenevissä määrin Suomessa vuodesta 1982 alkaen. Menetelmä sopii varsin monenlaisten tutkimusongelmien selvittämiseen joustavuutensa ja eräänlaisen kevytkäyttöisyytensä vuoksi. Näennäisestä helppoudestaan huolimatta menetelmän käyttöön liittyy paljon pohdittavaa ja päätettävää erityisesti aineiston keräämisen vaiheessa. Eläytymismenetelmän käyttöä kehitetäänkin teoksen päättävässä menetelmäartikkelissa siitä näkökulmasta, miten menetelmälle keskeiset kehyskertomukset kannattaa muotoilla ja miten niiden avulla aineisto on kerättävissä digitalisoituvassa ja monikielistyvässä yhteiskunnassamme.     Description: "Towards New Beginnings: Journalists’ Descriptions about Ruptures in Media Work This volume reveals a previously untold view on changes in media work in Finland. Finnish journalists relate their experiences of being made redundant or deciding to resign, and their views on their profession in a time of flux. The data are based on telephone surveys, in-depth interviews and journalists’ written accounts. Journalists are riddled with insecurity about their future. They feel they have borne the brunt of misplaced investments and the economic conjuncture, and their work motivation and creativity have suffered due to recurring layoffs in newsrooms. Support from employment authorities for finding a new job has also been practically non-existent, and coping with a career change has generated further stress and insecurity. However, journalists who have found new employment typically feel more comfortable in these jobs than in their former work. Career shifters have also been able to make use of their journalistic skills in their new jobs and identify themselves as journalists. The authors are from the Research Centre for Journalism, Media and Communication (COMET) at the University of Tampere, Finland. The study was funded by the Finnish Work Environment Fund and the Foundation for Promoting Journalistic Culture (JOKES). "

Suomalaiset journalismin tekijät kertovat kokemuksistaan ja näkemyksistään, kun oma työsuhde päättyy irtisanomiseen tai irtisanoutumiseen ja kun oma ammatti käy läpi merkittävää murrosvaihetta. Toimittajien kokemuksia yt-neuvotteluista, työttömyydestä ja uudelleentyöllistymisestä on koottu teosta varten puhelinkyselyllä, teemahaastatteluin sekä toimittajien laatimilla kirjoitelmilla. Tutkimuksen mukaan toimittajia jäytää epävarmuus tulevaisuudesta. Ammattikunta kokee joutuneensa virheinvestointien ja suhdanteiden sijaiskärsijäksi, ja työmotivaatio sekä luovuus ovat kärsineet toistuvien yt-kierrosten takia. Uuden työn löytäminen on jäänyt jokaisen omalle kontolle; työvoimaviranomaisilta ei ole herunut edes rohkaisua uuteen alkuun. Vanhasta työstä luopuminen ja uuteen sopeutuminen ovat kuormittaneet ja luoneet epävarmuutta esimerkiksi pärjäämisestä. Tutkimukseen haastatellut uudelleentyöllistyneet toimittajat kertoivat silti viihtyvänsä uudessa työssä paremmin kuin edellisessä työpaikassa. Vaikka toimittaja oli vaihtanut toiselle alalle, hän pystyi yhä hyödyntämään journalistista osaamistaan ja tuntemaan itsensä edelleen toimittajaksi. Especially the Finns' attitudes and political divisions, policies, the length of customership of last-resort social security, the functionality of service and income transfer systems, social segmentation created by breadlines and coping on the last-resort social security are observed. The book is meant for all interested in the condition and future of the welfare state. It is suitable as a textbook in universities and universities of applied sciences. The editor of the book, Juho Saari, is Professor in social and health policy at the University of Tampere and part-time Professor in welfare sociology at the University of Eastern Finland. Kuitenkin keskeisempää hyvinvointivaltion tulevaisuudelle on sen sosiaalinen perusta, eli ihmisten kokemukset yhteiskunnan reiluudesta, tasa-arvoisuudesta ja luotettavuudesta sekä hyvinvointivaltion kyky kantaa vastuu kaikkein haavoittuvimmassa asemassa olevista ryhmistä. Toimiva hyvinvointivaltio sovittaa yhteen taloudellisen kestävyyden ja sosiaalisen perustan. Kuitenkin 2010-luvun puolivälin hyvinvointivaltion sosiaalisessa perustassa on halkeamia. Tässä teoksessa analysoidaan hyvinvointivaltion sosiaalisen perustan halkeamia ja murroksia sosiaaliturvariippuvuuden näkökulmasta. Erityisesti tarkastelemme siihen liittyviä suomalaisten asenteita ja poliittisia jakolinjoja, politiikkalinjauksia, viimesijaisen turvan asiakkuuksien kestoa, palvelu- ja tulonsiirtojärjestelmien toimivuutta, leipäjonojen luomia yhteiskunnallisia jakolinjoja ja ihmisten selviytymistä viimesijaisella turvalla.     Description: "When Aleksis Kivi’s (1834–1872) Finnish tragedy Karkurit (‘The Escapees’) was originally published in 1867 it was considered better than his two former plays, the Kalevalaic tragedy Kullervo (1864) and the comedy Nummisuutarit (‘Heath Cobblers’, 1864). Soon these encouraging views, however, turned completely opposite. Dismissing attitudes towards Kivi’s play were dominant until the 1960s when new theatre productions made its artistic merits worthy of consideration again. The critical edition of Karkurit gives a new and more versatile image of Aleksis Kivi as a playwright and helps to understand his tragedy in the light of the changing artistic ideals of different periods and generations. Expert introductions by leading authorities illuminate the multidimensional dramaturgy of the play and reflect its relation to the European drama traditions and the socio-historical context of 19th-century Finland. In addition, the introductory articles analyse Kivi’s pioneering blank verse dialogues and discuss how Karkurit was published and performed from the 19th century up to the present day.     Description: Aberrations of Reason. Capitalist Rationality and its Critique in Juha Seppälä’s Novels Yhtiökumppanit (The Partners, 2002), Paholaisen haarukka (Devil’s Fork, 2008) and Mr. Smith (2012). Juha Seppälä’s early literary works, published in the 1980s and in the early 1990s, usually described spiritually lonely men who suffered from an existential loss of meaning and serious alienation problems in the modern world. After this, Seppälä turned to deal with the transformation of the Finnish way of life and its cultural base, until after the turn of the new millennium he began to critically judge society’s ongoing marketization process. This study analyses his capitalism-critical works, particularly his novels Yhtiökumppanit (The Partners, 2002), Paholaisen haarukka (Devil’s Fork, 2008) and Mr. Smith (2012). These works do not, primarily, consider contemporary market capitalism from a class perspective, although this sort of perspective is also included in them. They are, above all, critical of market capitalist rationality. According to Seppälä, the basic problem of modern economic profit-seeking lies in the fact that in its unchecked form it is largely indifferent with respect to existential, moral, social and ecological values and principles. Free market economy or market capitalism has, therefore, a destructive influence on individuals, communities and ecological systems. The novels at issue emphasize that due to this it is also, in a deeper sense, incapable of producing existentially meaningful ways of life.

    Description: The ten articles in this edited volume examine the city of Varkaus as a small city struggling with structural change using historical documents as well as survey and interview data. The city of Varkaus, which has a long industrial history, has lost a large part of its industrial jobs in the first decades of this millennium and its population has fallen sharply in recent years. However, a survey of the adult population shows that the inhabitants of Varkaus are typically satisfied with their work, with their social relationships and their lives in general. Varkaus is seen as a safe and good living environment. A central element of well-being is couple relationship, as well as other social relationships. The lack of well-being often stems from unemployment, low income and feelings of not belonging to the place of residence. Young adults value their place of residence as well as their family relationships, but there are tensions in their life regarding work and income. The tranquility and proximity to nature of Varkaus are appreciated, but there are also many who long for more urban heartbeat in their hometown.
    Description: Tässä kymmenestä artikkelista koostuvassa kokoomateoksessa tarkastellaan Varkautta rakennemuutoksen kanssa kamppailevana pienenä kaupunkina historiallisia dokumentteja sekä vuosina 2016–2017 kerättyjä kysely- ja haastatteluaineistoa hyödyntäen. Pitkän teollisuushistorian omaava Varkauden kaupunki on tämän vuosituhannen ensimmäisinä vuosikymmeninä menettänyt suuren osan teollisista työpaikoistaan ja sen väestö on supistunut voimakkaasti. Kuitenkin koko aikuisväestöä edustava kysely kertoo, että varkautelaiset ovat tyypillisesti tyytyväisiä työhönsä, sosiaalisiin suhteisiinsa ja elämäänsä muutenkin. Varkaus nähdään turvallisena ja hyvän elämän puitteet tarjoavana asuinpaikkana. Hyvinvoinnin tärkeitä osatekijöitä ovat parisuhde ja muut sosiaaliset suhteet. Hyvinvoinnin puutteet liittyvät työttömyyteen, pienituloisuuteen sekä ulkopuolisuuden tunteisiin suhteessa asuinpaikkaan. Nuoret aikuiset arvostavat omaa asuinpaikkakuntaansa sekä perhe- ja sukulaisuussuhteitaan, mutta arkielämään liittyy jännitteitä työn ja toimeentulon osalta. Varkauden rauhallisuutta ja luonnonläheisyyttä arvostetaan, mutta monet toivoivat siltä myös enemmän kaupunkimaista sykettä.

    Description: Songs and writings: oral and literary cultures in early-modern Finland renews the understanding of exchange between the learned culture of clergymen and the culture of commoners, or “folk”. What happened when the Reformation changed the position of the oral vernacular language to literary and ecclesiastical, and when folk beliefs seem to have become an object for more intensive surveillance and correction? How did clergymen understand and use the versatile labels of popular belief, paganism, superstition and Catholic fermentation? Why did they choose particular song languages, poetic modes and melodies for their Lutheran hymns and literary poems, and why did they avoid oral poetics in certain contexts while accentuating it in others? How were the hagiographical traditions representing the international medieval literary or “great” tradition adapted to “small” folk traditions, and how did they persist and change after the Reformation? What happened to the cult of the Virgin Mary in local oral traditions? The first Finnish 16th-century reformers admired the new Germanic models of Lutheran congregational hymns and avoided the Finnic vernacular Kalevala-metre idiom, while their successors picked up many vernacular traits, most notably alliteration, in their ecclesiastical poetry and hymns. Over the following centuries, the new features introduced via new Lutheran hymns such as accentual metres, end-rhymes and strophic structures were infusing into oral folk poetry, although this took place also via secular oral and literary routes. On the other hand, seventeenth-century scholars cultivated a new academic interest in what they understood as “ancient Finnish poetry”. The book has an extensive English Summary for the international readership.

Miten jätevesien puhdistusyhteistyö on alkanut ja muuttunut vuosien varrella? Miksi puhdistetaan naapurikuntien jätevesiä? Millaista keskustelua jätevedet ovat herättäneet menneisyydessä ja millaista tulevaisuutta koskevaa keskustelua niistä on käyty? Oikean strategian toteuttamisessa tarvitaan yhteistyötä ja osaavaa johtamista. Espoo on voinut historiassa käyttää omien resurssiensa lisäksi vesihuollossa myös naapurikuntien resursseja. Nyt tarkastelukohteena olevan jätevesienpuhdistuksen osalta tämä on tarkoittanut sitä, että naapurikunnat ovat maksaneet osansa ja osin enemmänkin kuin osansa jätevesiensä puhdistamisesta ja varsinkin Suomenojan jätevedenpuhdistamosta. Näiden lisäresurssien turvin historian saatossa kertyneet resurssit ovat mahdollistaneet nykyisen hyvän tilanteen pitkän tähtäimen strategisten päätösten avulla. Näistä strategisista päätöksistä yksi konkreettisin näyttö ovat jätevesiä koskevat sopimukset naapurikuntien kanssa. Sopimukset ja niiden takana olleet päätökset ovat hyvin kaukonäköisiä ja kaikkia osapuolia sitovia. Ne osaltaan mahdollistavat, että valittavana on ollut kehityspolkuja, joita kaikkialla ei ole ollut käytössä. Vuoden 2010 alusta alkaen Espoon vesihuolto on toiminut yhdessä pk-seudun organisaatiossa alueen muiden vesilaitosten kanssa, HSY:n organisaation alaisuudessa.

    Description: This book explores the media coverage of three prominent Finnish labor market cases in the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. It analyzes how this arena supported or undermined the power positions of each side and the reaching of the contract. The cases in study are the first proper general agreement in 1968 (Liinamaa 1) and the endeavors for so-called “social contract” by the Government of Esko Aho (1991) and Juha Sipilä (2015). The study identifies changes and continuities in the political discourses, in the ways of making validity claims in political argumentation, and in media/journalistic interventionism. These content analytical viewpoints illustrate the theoretical ideas about mediatization of politics presented in the book. By analyzing corporatist and pluralist aspects of decision making, the book opens a view in the relationships among labor market organizations, the Government, and the media in the three decades studied.

Aperitiffin pitkittäisvaikutuksia suomalaisessa kirjallisuudessa tutkitaan Jaakko Yli-Juonikkaan Neuromaani-romaanin (2012) kautta, teosten julkaisuajankohtia ja rakennusperiaatteita vertaillen. Tämän luennan valossa moniaineksisten avantgarde-romaanien poetiikka näyttäytyy edelleen erittäin elin- ja ilmaisuvoimaisena. Antologian liitteenä on myös arkistoharvinaisuuksia: pienoisessee, jossa Aronpuro ruotii tuoreeltaan (marraskuussa 1965) romaaninsa vastaanottoa ja kommentoi omaa teostaan, sekä otteita toisen painoksen (1978) lisämateriaalien käsikirjoitusliuskoista.

    Description: Social and the ecological welfare should be taken as the main aim of all politics. This is the message of this book titled The Enchantment of Social Policy. Basic social security system needs to be rebuilt and grounded on the universal basic income that everyone can top up by participating to the society in different ways. Universal basic income can be seen as a mean to recognize all valuable participation to for example voluntary work or care of elderly people. In conditions of high unemployment, this kind of universalistic social security would weaken the nexus between employment and welfare. It would promote a society and culture that is less dependent on the exploitation of natural resources. This book describes building blocks that are needed to reconstitute the enchantment of social policy – the utopian that we should collectively pursue.

Tällainen sosiaaliturva ottaisi lähtökohdakseen uuden ihmisarvon ja loisi luonnonvaroja säilyttävää ja niukkaan materian käyttöön perustuvaa kulttuuria ja taloutta. Sosiaalipolitiikalla olisi tällaisessa politiikassa aktiivinen ja yhteiskunnan taloudellista ja sosiaalista kehitystä vauhdittava rooli, ja kansalaiset olisi kutsuttu hyvinvoinnin aktiivisiksi tekijöiksi.

    Description: Nurses have been recruited to Finland from the Philippines since 2008. Although the numbers are relatively low, the phenomenon is new and has thus given rise to a manifold societal debate. It has been questioned, whether the international recruitment of nurses is an ethically and economically sustainable solution to the shortage of nursing staff in Finland. This publication serves as a forum where various agents in the international recruitment processes can get their voice to be heard. A multi-perspective approach is used to enable researchers to provide a fair, equivalent and empirically-validated illustration of the causes and consequences of international recruitment processes.

    Description: The focus of this research is on Finland’s role in Soviet Union’s calculation of its foreign policy between 1920 and 1930. This was the first decade of both Finnish independence and of Soviet power in Russia. This book answers questions about the objectives of Soviet foreign policy in Finland, on the contacts used by the Soviet legation to obtain information, and on how well the Soviets understood Finland’s objectives. People interested in Finland and in Russian perspectives with regards to foreign policy and neighbouring countries will find much new in this book because it relies on formerly unpublished Russian archival material to form the basis for charting Soviet objectives in Finland. The book shows that the Soviets primarily observed Finland in a larger regional context along with other states on its borders in the Baltic Sea region. The global objectives of the revolution and the Soviet Union, but also the domestic political situation in both countries, are reflected on this framework. The period was characterized by forced collectivization in the Soviet Union and, in Finland, by the rise of the right-wing Lapua Movement that emerged at the onset of the Great Depression, laying the foundations for the most severe crisis in the relations during 1929–1930 when the issues surrounding these events destabilized simultaneously the society and political decision-making in both countries.

    Description: This book [Mediatized power and the return of the political] describes Finnish decision-makers’ relationship with the media. It is based on surveys in 2009 and 2019. In 2009 there were 419 and in 2019 484 respondents, all of them having an influential position in some of the eight societal sectors covered in the study. The results show a moderate change from a consensus-oriented and networking decision-making culture towards a more ideologic and power-based way of negotiating. However, it seems that this has not affected how open or transparent the negotiation-processes are or how prone the decision-makers are to leak confidential information. The decision-makers’ relationship with media publicity has become more professional and strategic. The results point to an increased role of social media in communications management while the role of the news media seems to be diminishing. Even though the decision-makers view publicity as an even more risky and strategic arena of political struggle than they did before, they also seem now acknowledge more clearly the rational aspects of journalism. The self-reported role of media publicity as a source of personal authority has somewhat diminished while there seems to be no change in how prone the decision-makers think they are for the impacts of media publicity.

    Description: "Encounters, breaks and bonds: a study of the mother work in the Supermammat peer group This study explores a peer group for mothers, which is presented by the pseudonym Supermammat. The group is a third sector agent, which has served mothers and their children almost three decades. In the Supermammat group mothers get opportunity for carrying out functional programme, taking their children to organized childcare, sharing peer support and receiving professional aid. In addition to weekly meetings, outings, camps and other recreational activities are organized in the group. The aim of the operation is to support motherhood. The objective of the study is to describe practices of supporting mothers in the operation of the Supermammat group. The objective is approached by treating group’s history, current operation and principles directing it together with workers and their job towards supporting mothers participating in the operation of the Supermammat group. However, the study par excellence gives voice to people for whom the group has established. It’s most central aim is to tell what kind of meaning the operation of the group has for mothers. This is ethnographically executed case study, which starting point is to explore restricted research subject by utilizing different perspectives and datas. The core data consists of interviews of mothers participated in the operation of the Supermammat group (N=23) and fieldnotes gathered during participant observation. In addition, interviews of persons worked on the group (N=11) are included in the data. The data gathered is supplemented by the documents from the operation of the group. Research findings indicate that the operation of the group has turned more professional and functionally more various in the course of time. The operation consists of many elements, reaches dozens of mothers annually and requires contribution of several agents. Participating in the operation gets it’s meaning as encounters, breaks and bonds. The group gives an opportunity for encounters forming both peer support and professional aid. At the same time, it constructs a chance of withdrawing from everyday life by producing breaks to mother’s routines. In addition, participating in the operation of the Supermammat group gives space for constructing an affinity, various relationships and connections fastened on the group. "

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on kuvata käytäntöjä, joilla Supermammojen toiminnassa tuetaan siihen osallistuvia äitejä. Tavoitteeseen vastataan tarkastelemalla ryhmän historiaa, tämänhetkistä toimintaa ja sitä ohjaavia periaatteita sekä työntekijöitä ja tehtäviä, joita he toteuttavat Supermammojen toimintaan osallistuvien äitien tukemiseksi. Ennen kaikkea tutkimus kuitenkin antaa äänen ihmisille, joita varten Supermammojen ryhmä on perustettu. Sen keskeisin päämäärä on kertoa, millainen merkitys ryhmän toiminnalla on siihen osallistuneille äideille. Kyseessä on etnografisesti toteutettu tapaustutkimus, jonka lähtökohtana on rajatun tutkimuskohteen tarkastelu erilaisia näkökulmia ja aineistoja hyödyntäen. Keskeisin osa aineistoa ovat Supermammojen toimintaan osallistuneiden äitien haastattelut (N=23) ja osallistuvan havainnoinnin perusteella kirjatut kenttämuistiinpanot. Aineistoon kuuluu myös ryhmässä työskennelleiden henkilöiden haastatteluja (N=11) ja Supermammojen toiminnasta tuotettuja dokumentteja. Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, että Supermammojen toiminta on ajan kuluessa muuttunut paitsi professionaalisemmaksi myös toiminnallisesti moninaisemmaksi. Toiminta koostuu monista elementeistä, tavoittaa vuosittain kymmeniä äitejä ja vaatii toteutuakseen useiden toimijoiden työpanosta.     Description: Societal impact is an integral part of academic research today and researchers are expected to share their findings with research participants. Efforts to develop scientific research and science communication from one-way communication towards different forms of co-creation where the researcher and research participants produce knowledge and negotiate about its meaning and applicability through joint actions are in great demand. For the researcher, such developments have brought a new kind of access into the world of research participants and also novel reflections on one’s professional knowledge and identity and their boundaries. This book focuses on the human and social sciences and draws particular attention to the diverse encounters that occur between researchers and research participants at all stages of the research process when studying human subjects and activities. The book presents case studies of applied conversation analysis in a variety of professional contexts. The aim of the book is to shed light on the practices, possibilities, and challenges of applied research within the conversation analytic framework where the research participants’ authentic social situations become the target of the researcher’s detailed analysis. The articles of the book investigate social interaction in occupational health care, mental health rehabilitation, elderly care, welfare education, theatre rehearsals, social circus, military organization, software development, and workplace community break taking. These articles represent applied conversation analysis in different ways. The results of the research have been used in some of the articles, for example, in developing the professional practices of the workplace community whereas in some other articles the whole study has been undertaken collaboratively between researchers and professionals. Each article is divided into two parts: a conventional research report that analyses the patterns of social interaction in a particular professional setting is followed by a story where the authors reflect on how their study originated, how it progressed, and what kinds of encounters and choices it involved. The stories highlighting reciprocal interactions of the researcher and the research participants across the research process bring forth various voices and perspectives that conventionally are not considered as part of the research report. The book brings important information not only on the interactional phenomena examined in the articles but also on the diverse issues of conducting and applying research in professional contexts. It also discusses the practices and definitions of applied conversation analysis within the broader framework of applied research, universities’ third mission, and forms of knowledge and expertise in contemporary society.

    Description: " Voting advice applications (VAA) have supported Finnish voters for over 20 years in their voting decisions in general elections. Most Finnish VAAs are planned and provided by the media, and they are based on matching opinions of individual candidates with an individual VAA users before elections. Nowadays, in Finland, VAAs are important for almost all age groups. Among the youngest voters VAAs are viewed as the most important source of information to support voting decisions. The book provides up-to-date and comprehensive picture over the role and significance of VAAs in the Finnish political system and in the political communication arena. Research topics deal also with VAA journalism and how candidates perceive VAAs. Research data and data materials in use are wide-ranging. They range from survey data sets to questions of VAAs and from interviews of candidates and VAA producers to media content about VAAs. Theoretical research questions are mostly related to the democratic value of VAAs. This perspective is central also in the end of the book, which opens possible future pathways for the VAAs."
