    Description: This book is the first Finnish-language collection of research on superdiversity. At the core of the book is the growing migration to Finland since the turn of the 1990s and its numerous effects on Finnish society. The interdisciplinary examination of superdiversity is important at the current moment: Finland as a society has reached the point where certain social categories, such as ethnic background, country of birth, mother tongue or gender, are not necessarily sufficient to understand the increased diversity and its consequences. The book consists of a comprehensive introduction to the topic and thirteen chapters. In Finland, research on superdiversity is carried out especially in critical sociolinguistics and applied language studies, education, cultural studies, social sciences, and urban studies. Therefore, these disciplines are strongly represented in the collection, and the chapters approach a variety of topics including refugees’ mental health, experiences of multilingual families, the diversity of education and working life, discursive practices in social media, issues of urban planning and pro-asylum activism.

    Description: In this book, five experienced Nordic L1-didactitians and teacher educators search for their professional roots as pupils, students, teachers, teacher educators, managers and researchers over a period of fifty years. In the form of the scientific essay, various historical professional struggles and processes that may lie behind this professionalisation are examined, partly from a critical perspective: Academisation, theorising, didacticisation, textualisation, and internationalisation, especially within first language (L1), L1 didactics and L1 didactic research. Documentation and discussion of the complex relationship between institutionalised academic operations and personal and collective knowledge development nevertheless constitute a main line in the presentation. The L1 subjects in which the descriptions are anchored are Danish, Finnish Swedish, Norwegian and Swedish. The contributions provide personal, experience-based, historical representations of the development contextualized with the narrators' own research in the field as well as descriptions of general development trends within schools, education, and society. A framing chapter provides methodological and theoretical premises for the texts and a concluding chapter analyses the content of and discusses the outcome of the essays. The book is aimed at anyone who is interested in the development of professional teacher training on a Nordic basis, especially native language and subject didactics. Although Per-Olof Erixon and Sigmund Ongstad are editors, the book has been created in close collaboration with the other contributors, Sven-Erik Hansén, Ellen Krogh, and Jon Smidt.
    Description: I denne boka søker fem erfarne, nordiske morsmålsdidaktikere og lærerutdannere sine faglige røtter som elever, studenter, lærere, lærerutdannere, ledere og forskere over en femtiårsperiode. I det vitenskapelige essayets form undersøkes ulike historiske fagkamper og prosesser som kan ligge bak denne profesjonaliseringen, dels i et kritisk perspektiv: Akademisering, teoretisering, didaktisering, tekstualisering og internasjonalisering, spesielt innen morsmål (L1), morsmålsdidaktikk og morsmålsdidaktisk forskning, men også fagdidaktisk forskning.     Description: An increasing number of preschool teachers have a master's degree, and in Norway, employing preschool teachers with a master’s-level education is a stated political objective. In both Norway and Denmark, there is growing demand for greater expertise in preschool and more career options for preschool teachers and educators. Thus, there is also a need for greater understanding about the impact of academic knowledge on preschool pedagogical practice. In this anthology, new empirical knowledge is presented on how master's-level competence is applied practically within the preschool context, and how academic knowledge is found relevant in practice. The empirical material that forms the basis of this anthology is qualitative interviews with master's-educated teachers in Norwegian and Danish preschools as well as a survey sent to all preschools in Norway. The anthology is also based on historical material and documents that highlight the rise of specialized education in general and master's education in particular. The book stems from the research project “Preschool master in practice”, a collaborative project between researchers at one Danish and two Norwegian educational institutions: VIA University College in Århus, Oslo Metropolitan University, and the University of South-Eastern Norway. The aim of the project has been to increase understanding of how master’s-educated preschool teachers’ feel their particular expertise is put to use, and how their expertise benefits the preschool and creates opportunities within the sector.
    Description: Stadig flere barnehagelærere har masterutdanning. I Norge er det også en uttalt politisk ambisjon om at det skal ansettes flere masterutdannede barnehagelærere i barnehagen. Både i Norge og Danmark ser vi en økende etterspørsel etter mer kompetanse i barnehagen og flere karriereveier for barnehagelærere og pedagoger. Dermed blir det også behov for mer kunnskap om hva som skjer i møtet mellom akademisk kunnskap og barnehagefaglig pedagogisk praksis. I denne antologien presenteres ny empirisk kunnskap om hvordan kompetanse på masternivå anvendes i barnehagen, og hvordan akademisk kunnskap gis relevans for barnehagens praksis. Det empiriske materialet som ligger til grunn for antologien, er kvalitative intervjuer med masterutdannede barnehagelærere i norske og danske barnehager og en spørreundersøkelse sendt ut til alle norske barnehager. Antologien er også basert på historisk materiale og dokumenter som synliggjør framveksten av videreutdanninger generelt og masterutdanning spesielt. Bokutgivelsen springer ut av forskningsprosjektet «Barnehagefaglig master i praksis», som er et samarbeidsprosjekt mellom forskere ved én dansk og to norske utdanningsinstitusjoner, henholdsvis VIA University College i Århus, OsloMet – storbyuniversitetet og Universitetet i Sørøst-Norge. Målet med prosjektet har vært å utvide kunnskapen om hvordan barnehagelærere med barnehagefaglig masterutdanning erfarer at deres kompetanse blir anvendt, og om hvordan kompetansen kommer barnehagen til gode og gis muligheter i sektoren.

    Description: The biography of Margaret Darling Kilpinen (1896–1965) represents the fields of music history and women’s studies. It brings forth a woman who is of pliable but also strong character. She was active for over four decades in the musical life of Finland. What kind of professional role, combining performing and pedagogical work, was she able to build for herself? She was the wife of a well-known, strong-willed composer who had many ties to Germany, and also the mother of a daughter. How was she able to keep up her own artistry? The book deals with Margaret’s role as a solo and lied pianist, her long career as a pedagogue in the Sibelius Academy and as a harpsichord player with a part in the rise of old music in Finland in the 1930s. There is also the microhistorical angle: While looking at Margaret as a person and her life, general tendencies and attitudes among the cultural circles of Finland of her time are revealed. The main source material for the book, which is available for use for the very first time, has been the correspondence between Yrjö and Margaret Kilpinen.

    Description: Michael Agricola’s main work is the New Testament, published in 1548, a magnificent quarto volume of 700 pages with a hundred woodcuts. The basic text used was the Greek text published by Erasmus, Erasmus’ Latin translation, the Vulgate, the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible from 1541. The 450 marginal glosses come from the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible. In his translation, Agricola distinguished “the Holy Spirit’s own words,” i.e. H. the Bible text, the prefaces and marginal glosses, which were only intended to provide “clearer understanding”. The word of God is much more valuable than the word of man, so that the translator was closely tied to the text. A free translation was out of the question, let alone consciously improving the text. He was able to proceed more freely with the prefaces and marginal glosses. Most of the time he translated verbatim, but did not shy away from omissions, additions and changes when he deemed them appropriate. In this critical edition, Agricola’s marginal glosses on the New Testament are printed in parallel with their sources.

    Description: The book approaches the history of Finnish development cooperation through the experiences of development aid workers. At its core is a small group of Finns (experts and officials from different fields) who have worked with international development aid in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Their memories and experiences, together with diverse archival material offer an interesting window into the world of development (cooperation), or “Aidland”, from the 1960s to the turn of the millennium. The research focuses on the personal motives and experiences of Finnish aid workers from the 1960s to the 2000s. The book offers perspectives on the historical construction of Aidland since the 1940s and on the gradual integration of Finland and the Finns into its structures. It describes the mindset of the first two generations of aid workers and the factors that made them interested in developing countries. The book follows their education, their first contacts with Aidland, adaptation to work and conditions, returning home and the challenges that come with it. The study gives the reader a view of the power positions, hierarchies and contradictions in Aidland and development cooperation, which at times led Finns to reassess their motives and justify to themselves the meaningfulness of the entire undertaking. Through their experiences, the book also deals with the less-known side of development cooperation, such as corruption, prejudices, and opposition to development projects, as well as their occasionally unwanted consequences in partner/recipient countries. It also sheds light on the effects of the Aidland experience on an individual’s worldview and identity. The book is an academic study suitable for a wide audience, from university students to ordinary readers interested in development cooperation. The book helps to understand both the history of development and the construction of multi-level connections of Finnish society with the countries of the Global South. It is therefore also ideally suited for readers interested in the development of Finland’s internationalization in the late twentieth century. For its part, the book contributes to wider public debates on development cooperation.

    Description: This volume looks at the Finnish-German military alliance (1941–1944) as a translation zone – a multilingual network of military, administrative and civilian encounters that was held together by linguistically versed soldiers and civilians acting as interpreters and translators. It focuses on interpreters and liaison officers of the Finnish Liaison Staff in Rovaniemi, who were assigned to the staffs of the German army units with the task of maintaining communication between the two armies and assisting German troops in their daily matters. Furthermore, attention is paid to Finnish civilians, especially women whose language skills made them candidates for a range of mediation tasks in the German units. The reconstruction of military interpreters’ and liaison officers’ tasks and mediation agency between the two military cultures is based on their war-time weekly reports, whereas the civilian interpreters’ experiences are drawn from a variety of autobiographical accounts, including interviews.

    Description: Mechthild of Hackeborn represents medieval mysticism. Her Revelations were written down in the 1290s in Helfta, Germany. The oldest surviving versions are in Latin, but in the Middle Ages, the Revelations were translated at least into Dutch, English, Swedish, and German. The text was translated into Swedish in 1469 by Jöns Budde, a Bridgettine brother from Naantali. Budde made few omissions but many additions in the text, mainly explanations to meet the needs of the Bridgettine sisters. Budde’s translation is faithful to the original text, and he made few mistakes. My Finnish translation of the text follows Budde’s version where possible. However, Budde translated an abridged version that omitted some chapters, and the only surviving copy of Budde’s translation is incomplete. I have therefore translated the missing sections from Latin and incorporated them in the text. My translation also includes editorial comments on the language, the contents, and the historical and theological contexts of the Revelations.

    Description: Die Teilung Schleswigs nach Volksabstimmungen im Jahre 1920 hatte langfristige Folgen nördlich und südlich der neuen Grenze. Viele wurden durch Agitation und Abstimmung tief beeindruckt, sogar die Archive des Gebiets mussten geteilt werden. Nordschleswig wurde als ein Teil des Königreichs Dänemarks einverleibt. Diese wurde von einem nordschleswigschen Ministerium vorbereitet und kam bei der Konstruktion der Grenze sowie in Schule und Kirche zum Ausdruck. Die deutsche Minderheit widersetzte sich der Integration und während der Krisenjahre entstanden extreme politische Bewegungen. Diese Folgen werden in diesem Buch thematisiert, das ein Ergebnis einer deutsch-dänischen Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein und dem Rigsarkivet Aabenraa mit dem Studienzentrum für die Geschichte Schleswigs ist.

Learning Through Food and Meals in Primary School takes a look at school meal programs in Denmark, Sweden and Norway with the objective of providing educators and teacher-education students an understanding of school meals from public health and nutritional perspectives, as well as a sense of the potential for teaching through school meals. Thematically, the chapters range from studies of different school meal initiatives to analyses of the social, democratic, and pedagogical significance of school meals.     Description: Politeness is a key means by which we maintain interpersonal relationships. This book is the first comprehensive study of politeness in Finnish. Based on linguistic and pragmatic research, the book spans three parts. The first part is theoretical and historical, summarising three waves of politeness research, describing politeness as a cultural and historical phenomenon. The second part is empirical, providing an example of the study of im/politeness from outsiders’ perspectives—that, is French people living in Finland and Finns living or having lived in France. The focus group discussions ranged from definitions of politeness and differences of behaviour, to learning and teaching as well as to changes to politeness norms within society. The third part summarises the conclusions and offers an epilogue. This reader-friendly book includes exercises and recommended readings, and is welcomed by researchers and students working on politeness and, more broadly, relational work.

    Description: The book presents the biographies and work lists of 126 Finnish women composers born between 1784 and 1909. Based on large-scale archival research, it is the first comprehensive historical account of Finnish women composers and their cultural heritage. The authors draw on feminist music history and the sociohistorical approach to find out who these women were, what kind of music they wrote, and how their careers reflected European cultural and social history. The treatise highlights the influence of girls’ schools, women’s suffrage movements and other socio-political developments on the musical culture of women. Concepts such as “composer”, “woman” and “Finnish” were assumed to be open and inclusive throughout the research, in terms of both musical style and diversity in cultural background. In concentrating on music-making by women, the book opens up radically new vistas on Finland’s music and cultural history, and it rectifies previous erroneous conceptions about women’s composership and their artistic work. In short, it exposes the richness in the sonic and intellectual heritage of Finnish women composers, as well as its significance in society today.

    Description: It is generally recognized that in early modern society, the position of the church and clergy was very central. As many historians have stated over the decades, the church and state were closely connected and their power structures and ideologies supported each other. However, when studying the social and public role of the church and clergy, it soon becomes quite clear how pervasive this phenomenon was. The church not only created but also maintained and acted as a part of international, national, and local communities, structures, and cultures that connected people regardless of their social status and gender. The church was a spiritual, administrative, and social institution and experience environment, whose tasks, scope, and meanings changed and intertwined with the development, needs, and requirements of society. In this book, we investigate from different perspectives the motives and different means by which the church and clergy came to play a significant part in early modern society. In this volume, the church is considered both as an administrative institution and as a social space and cultural structure. Hence, we do not focus on the history of theology or doctrinal questions. Instead, we consider the social and public roles and meanings of the church. The church as such is understood in this book as transnational, a strong national and local institution, and also a space and structure. The church had its own institutionalized place in society and its activities and rights were defined by law (Church law 1696, the Law of the Swedish kingdom 1734) and by the decrees given by the Royal Majesty. The church had its own archbishop-led administrative organization under the Royal Majesty and it worked in close cooperation with the Crown administration and county governors. In this volume, we understand the clergy as church servants, a trained and appointed professional group, a separate estate (social class), and also as a wide social network constructed by their families. The approach of this book is social science history. In other words, the book examines the church and the clergy as an integral part of society and the individual communities who lived in the current Finnish territory during the early modern era. The topic is examined on the basis of three conceptual themes reflecting important new areas of research in the study of the social significance of the church and clergy: (1) the clergy and family as part of the community, (2) the church as a jointly built space, and (3) the church as an arena for interaction, knowledge, and politics. We approach this multidimensionality using different research questions, sources, methods, and theoretical approaches. The volume focuses on the 17th to 19th centuries, but many of the church and clergy-related phenomena are much older, and some of them extend to the present, so the articles also move beyond this time frame.

    Description: The Centre Party of Finland was represented in almost all cabinets for decades, and it often held the post of prime minister during the reign of President Urho Kekkonen. When Kekkonen’s deteriorating health forced him to resign in 1981, the Centre Party, formerly the Agrarian Union, was in front of the crisis. The party was deeply divided along the lines of who would be the best candidate to succeed Kekkonen. The schism had prevailed for years, and contemporaries suspected the party would split up or at least lose its dominant position in Finnish politics. Besides, the numbers of core supporters making up the party, agrarians, were constantly diminishing. In addition, the Finnish party system was in a state of flux. The Finnish People’s Democratic League was in a deep downward spiral, while the Conservative Party’s support was ascendant. The power struggle between the three ‘big’ parties, the Centre Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Conservative Party, was fierce. The study describes and analyses how the Center Party survived the challenges it faced. How was the cohesion of the party rebuilt and maintained? How did the Centre Party manage to survive the inter-party contests and end up being the strongest party in the elections of 1991? The study is firmly based on source material from the party organization of the Centre Party and other relevant political actors, such as President Mauno Koivisto. The book provides new information on both Finnish domestic and foreign politics and the power struggles among the parties and leading political figures.

Der er flere elever, der har svært ved at læse, og for de svageste læsere er det endnu sværere end tidligere. Andelen af dygtige læsere er den samme som i tidligere undersøgelser, men næsten 25 procent af de danske 4.-klasseelever kan hverken fortolke, læse mellem linjerne eller læse kildekritisk.Samtidig er elevernes læseglæde faldet, og Danmark er – sammen med Norge – det land i hele undersøgelsen, som har færrest elever, der rigtig godt kan lide at læse. Flere elever har lav tiltro til deres egen læseforståelse, og både eleverne og deres forældre læser sjældnere i deres fritid.Danske elevers læsekompetence i 4. klasse præsenterer resultaterne af PIRLS 2021-undersøgelsen og fortæller om undersøgelsens baggrund og formål samt om udviklingen i elevernes læsekompetence fra 2006 og til i dag.     Description: Participatory approaches and co-research are increasingly employed in the current moment for exploring barriers to equality. Co-research treats research participants as experts in their own lives and as equal research partners. Research conducted with this orientation is based on research problems drafted by the research participants themselves from their aspirations regarding the research process and an active partnership that considers the interests of all parties involved. Participatory methods are used in co-research, particularly for the purpose of deepening the contextualisation of research knowledge about structurally vulnerable or subordinated groups and to challenge the power positions associated with traditional research designs. In co-research, the role of the people involved in the research is more central than in more traditional research. One of the key principles of co-research is that co-investigators (a) can participate in various roles, (b) have the opportunity to participate in different phases of the research according to their own interests and resources, and (c) co-investigators' participation can take many forms, including differences in intensity. The idea is to provide more people with opportunities to contribute to the knowledge production about themselves and their communities from their respective perspectives and interests. Co-research is also seen as an opportunity to improve the relevance and usefulness of scientific knowledge. It aims to genuinely increase interaction and openness and extend science's societal responsibility. In this book, we approach co-research as a means to promote social justice, as an action with a societal impact contributor to social impact and as a means to promote the societal responsibility of science. We discuss and evaluate the ideals of the co-research process concerning the everyday challenges and practices in research. Above all, we offer the knowledge and experience generated by our own projects to support those planning or already implementing co-research projects.

    Description: If the artworld is a battlefield of meanings, the fortunes of discourse did not favour avant-garde art in Finland in the 1910s. The latest trends, introduced by German and Russian artists in three pioneering exhibitions in Helsinki in 1914 and 1916, were dismissed by the Finnish press as foolish and unworthy. This book researches the contemporary reactions and contents of these exhibitions. The works shown in Helsinki included masterpieces from artists such as Chagall, Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Marc, Münter and Rozanova. Today these works can be found in the collections of leading museums in Europe, Russia and the USA. From the Finnish perspective, the turndown in the 1910s proved effective and irreversible. Never again have the local collections had similar opportunities to make a purchase. The rejection of radical international developments and emphasis on narrow nationalistic views left Finnish art lagging behind. This trend was already apparent in 1917 in St. Petersburg, where the Finnish artists were celebrated but their paintings deemed sombre and superannuated.

    Description: Accessibility to art and cultural activities is a topic with increasing attention. Most municipalities in the Scandinavian countries have kulturskoler (extra curricular schools of music and performing arts) that offer training and experiences in – and through – art and culture subjects for children and young people. But the users of these institutions are not representative for the society around them. The majority of the children and young people who actually use the kulturskole come from middle-class homes and have well-educated parents. There is therefore an increasing and absolutely necessary attention in the municipalities on how kulturskoler can reach new target groups, ensure more fair representation and develop as institutions being inclusive forces in the local community. The development project ""Kulturskolen as an inclusive force in the local community (KIL)"" had this focus. In this anthology, there are nine independent peer-reviewed research articles with topics that are relevant for those municipalities wanting to develop their potential as inclusive forces further. The book is suitable for both researchers, students or teachers associated with the didactic field of art, but also kulturskole leaders, elementary school teachers and others who are interested in how the kulturskole can function as an inclusive force in the local community

Men kulturskoleelevene avspeiler ikke samfunnet rundt, for størstedelen av de barn og unge som faktisk bruker kulturskolene kommer fra middelklassehjem og har godt utdannede foreldre. Det er derfor et økende og helt nødvendig søkelys på hvordan kulturskolene kan nå nye målgrupper og sikre en bedre representasjon. Utviklingsprosjektet Kulturskolen som inkluderende kraft i lokalsamfunnet (KIL) hadde dette søkelyset. I denne antologien finnes ni selvstendige fagfellevurderte forskningsartikler med tematikk som er relevant for å kunne utvikle dette potensialet videre.     Description: Alex Matson (1888–1972) is an important Finnish literary critic and essayist, whose literary reviews and collections of essays have made a vital contribution to the development of Finland's postwar literary generation. Born in Finland as the son of a sailor, Matson moved as a young child with his family to Hull in England, where he went to school. In the 1910s, he moved back to Finland, where he at first established himself as painter associated with the expressionist November Group, an important Finnish artistic movement at the time. In the interbellum, he moved from fine arts to literature. In the 1920s and 1930s, he published several novels, but more important was his work as transmitter of international literary ideas to Finland. Together with his first wife, Kersti Bergroth, he edited the literary journal Sininen kirja (""The Blue Book""; 1927–1930), which was inspired by the writings of John Middleton Murry and Katherine Mansfield. Sininen kirja is the most international literary journal in Finnish history to date and introduced Finland to the most significant modernist writers of the first half of the 20th century (Gottfried Benn, Jean Cocteau, Alfred Döblin, T. S. Eliot, Aldous Huxley, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Paul Valéry, Virginia Woolf). During the Second World War, Matson worked for the State Communications Agency, which was responsible for disseminating relevant information about Finland to other nations and for informing Finns of relevant developments abroad. It was also tasked with studying the prevailing mood among the population in Finland. In Matson's unpublished wartime diaries, one can see the first symptoms of a shift in Finnish culture away from Germany and towards Anglo-Saxon culture. From the 1940s onwards, Matson recommended new English and American novels as a part of his work as reader for Finnish publishing houses, and he also translated works by Joyce, Hemingway and Steinbeck. With the help of a network of international literary critics, Matson became acquainted with New Criticism, which he introduced to Finland before it became established among academic researchers. He was often critical of academic literary studies, but his seminal essay works Romaanitaide (""On the Prose Novel""; 1947), John Steinbeck (1948), Kaksi mestaria (""Two Masters"", on Tolstoy and Dostoevsky; 1950) as well as his impressive conversational skills were instrumental in introducing knowledge about the principles of the prose novel to several authors (including Väinö Linna, Lauri Viita, and Hannu Salama), and contributed to their views of literature. Matson emphasized the importance of reading and understanding high-quality literature for the wellbeing of society.

    Description: Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire during the years 1808–1917. At this time nationalism as well as other ideologies reached Finland from Europe, which strengthened the willingness to change both in society and on a governmental level. The Fennoman movement, which was a movement focusing both on language and on nationalism, became the core of the Finnish self-perception. The goal was to define Finland as a coherent and separate country in relation to its neighbouring countries. Collecting folk poems and learning to know one’s home country became essential. People saw the Kalevala poems as a way to understand and define the Finnish identity and the history of the Finnish people. Especially young people with a background in academia were intrigued by these ideas. University students collected poems all over the Grand Duchy of Finland as well as in the Russian part of Carelia, in Sweden, Norway and in Ingria. Students who collected these folk poems also wrote travelogues about their travels and all this material was handed over to The Finnish Literature Society. These documents are unique and there has not been much research done on them, especially with the focus on how the young academic generation during the age of autonomy defined their home country, their national self-perception, themselves and the commoners living in the rural parts of the country. This book reviews travelogues written by one hundred university students who travelled in the country collecting folk poems during 1836–1917. The book offers insight into how the students described Finland and what it meant to be Finnish. Travelogues can be defined as a sort of hybrid of texts. They consist of a mixture of letters, journals, biographical texts and travel books. Consequently, the image that the students depict of Finland is in this study based upon research perspectives and methods used in textual research, oral history and travel literature. The travelogues written by students previously evoked the interest of researchers who mainly studied certain traits of poem collectors, tradition bearers or poems. However, the travelogues contain plenty of information about the lives of the people who lived in the areas where the poems were collected. The descriptions of Finland in the travelogues do not represent the “real” 19th century Finland, but instead it is a story written and created by university students. The characteristics that are presented in The Land of Hope are based on how the intelligentsia perceived “real” Finnishness as opposed to the uneducated commoners living in the rural parts of the country. The most notable themes in the travelogues are the state and the future of the society and of being Finnish. Another theme is the otherization of those who were uneducated commoners. These themes describe the fears and hopes that university students had about Finland. They also show us that the travelogues were ideological texts about Finland and Finnishness that united the collectors of folk poetry. This book studies the collection of folk poetry in the context of the ideologies during the age of autonomy and it explains what the collection of poems meant and who were involved in it. Furthermore, the book gives an insight into the possibilities to pursue academic studies and it also presents the most essential sources of students’ knowledge about Finland at that point of time.

The book is structured around three topical perspectives. The first part deals with the question of social mobility. Empirical research topics include examples of achieving prestigious fields of education and the inheritance of the most prestigious professions, connections of class position to education through the educational experiences of working-class-based business students, and the ways in which academic world encounters with working-class culture in the university work of working-class and academically educated women. The second part of the book examines education as a form of capital defining the life course and social class. Topics covered include the connections of life stage of adolescence and class position, Bourdieusian analysis of educational choices and class positions, and opportunities for on-the-job learning and self-development in accordance with the class position of wage earners. The third part focuses on the education system and its structures. The dynamics of education and reproduction are analysed by using as empirical research objects the cross-generational reproduction of social relations in the curricula of basic education, the meaning of the language used in school as cultural capital, and the links between class position and perspectives that promote the raising of the age of compulsory education.

    Description: The nineteenth century has been called an age of monuments. In some places even one piece made a difference. This book is a study of the intellectual background and physical making of Finland’s first public sculpture, the statue of Professor Henrik Gabriel Porthan by Carl Eneas Sjöstrand. The idealised but sombre Porthan was born under the influence of German neoclassicism. Development on the project was slow but sure. The Swedish artist had to be supported over three years while he was putting together his first monumental piece in Munich and Rome, after which came another three years wait before the cast arrived to Finland. The bronze sculpture, commissioned by the Finnish Literary Society and raised by public subscriptions from people of all classes, was unveiled in the city of Turku in September 1864. Finns took some pride in the fact that, unlike other nations that had raised monuments to kings and generals, here the first place was given to a scholar. In this study Sjöstrand’s pioneering bronze is placed in a wider context and compared with works by his precursors and contemporaries in the international sculptor colony of Rome.

The book discusses the novels of Katja Kettu, Sofi Oksanen, Elina Hirvonen and Emmi Itäranta, where historical and collective traumas meet stories of personal vulnerability. Traumatic Memory in Contemporary Prose Fiction addresses war traumas and marks left by terrorism, colonialism, domestic violence and sexual violence, and analyses the aspects of ecological trauma and future threats.     Description: In the current digital media environment, legacy newspapers and their readers are often regarded as obsolete. For media executives and many journalists, the future of news is exclusively digital. Given the economic uncertainties facing the industry, news producers’ eyes are focused on audience metrics and their capacity to shed light on readers' preferences. This book sets out to analyse news reading from the perspective of the audience. Employing interviews as well as the so called obsläs method, it examines how readers of two Finnish regional newspapers, Hämeen Sanomat and Karjalainen, navigate in three distinct architectures of the newspaper: printed, digital replica and online news application. The assumption underlying the analysis is that each of these user interfaces favour somewhat differing reading protocols and routines. The empirical analysis responds to the big question pondered by editors and publishers: Where are the readers? It appears that most of the participants of the study tended to move from one architecture to another depending on their contextual and situational needs. In this comparison, the strengths of a printed newspaper seemed evident for many, while the balance between the pros and cons of the digital environment was more mixed. In addition to reporting the findings of the empirical audience study, this book evaluates the future of newspapers in the context of economic statistics and media policies. While the newspaper business in Finland struggles with increasing costs and volatility of income, it may well rely on the robust newspaper reading culture among the Finnish reading public.

    Description: Nothing exceptional happened in front of the youth association building in Kalajoki on 9 September 1953. There was a minor confrontation between regional police forces and local youth, but hundreds of similar events happened in small municipalities across Finland. The event took about ten minutes, nobody was seriously hurt, and collective feelings quickly calmed down. However, after extensive investigations, the regional prosecutor thought otherwise and prosecuted half a dozen local men for rebellion against the state in January 1954. The district court agreed. The municipality was shocked, and the Finnish society was taken by surprise. The case ended up in Supreme Court. This book analyses why and how the last rebellion in the history of Finland occurred in a tiny municipality on the west coast of Finland. The analysis is based on historical microsociology that integrates the insights of microhistory and microsociology into event structure analysis and collective memory studies.

    Description: Matti Kurikka (1863–1915) is a multi-dimensional and controversial character in Finnish history. He was a playwright, a journalist, a socialist, and a theosophist, as well as a speaker for sexual emancipation and women's rights. Kurikka was born in Ingria, and his activities spanned not only Finland, but also Australia and North America, in both of which he led utopian communities. This biographical study explores Kurikka as a literary and political figure and a builder of utopias, whose life opens fascinating views on the societal and cultural currents of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book critically re-evaluates earlier research on Kurikka and highlights forgotten phases of his life by using new source materials found in three continents. The sources include digitized newspapers and periodicals, Kurikka's plays and non-fictional books, oral history, and political cartoons.

    Description: Finnish psychiatric practice has been heavily based on institutionalization, and mental hospitals have played important cultural and historical roles in Finland. Our multidisciplinary research focuses on the bodily, spatial, affective, and multisensory aspects of the memories of patients, relatives, staff, and their children. The memories were collected and archived in the Finnish Literature Society in 2014–2015. These 92 written pieces cover the period from the 1930s to the 2010s. They reflect significant changes in Finnish psychiatry and provide crucial insights into the various meanings of mental hospitals in people’s lives, and the social and cultural forces that shape attitudes to and ideas about mental health problems, psychiatric care, and service users today. Drawing on our backgrounds in history, artistic research, and visual, cultural and literary studies, we provide new ways of reading and interpreting the memories and experiences in psychiatry. The study discusses memory, mental hospitals as lived spaces, the history of Finnish psychiatry and the relation between the memories of the different groups of writers. The chapters approach memories from the perspectives of affects and atmospheres, violence and abuse, everyday life at the hospital in the 1930s, feelings of fear and safety in the memories of the children of the staff, and the historically and culturally contingent tensions between hospitals and homes.

    Description: Finnish Lapland is a historical borderland of Finnish and Sámi cultures. Such a region offers various social-political identifications for people to choose: people may see it possible to identify as Finnish, Laplanders, Lappish or Sámi, for instance. However, the choices have social and political limits, and some identifications are more contested than others. The book examines the processes of identifications in the middle parts of Lapland, just south of the region defined as Sámi homeland in Finland. While the study reveals differences and nuances in people’s thinking, it also shows that there is a recognizable sense of shared cultural specifity around the region. Lapland is conceptualized as an extraordinary place with unusual nature and history, characterized by particular livelihoods (such as reindeer herding) and lively cultural interaction. The book concludes that while Lapland is extraordinary as a historical dwelling region of indigenous Sámi, it may be politically significant to recognize it as a unique borderland of cultures with features of its own.

    Description: Narrative After Postmodernism takes a critical and practical look at the cultural theories of what comes after postmodernism or the postmodern. Alongside contemporary literary authors, the anthology studies diverse contemporary textual phenomena from TV shows to online fan theories and survivalist blogs. The essays compiled in this anthology tentatively apply the theories of the post-postmodern to contemporary texts to see how they might open up for analysis within their new theoretical frameworks or challenge them.The introduction, co-written by all the authors of this volume, introduces the most influential theories of post-postmodernism and contextualizes them within broader intellectual trends of the early 21st Century. The three essays comprising the first part of the volume discuss some of the theories of the postmodern in relation to contemporary works that seem to challenge them. Yet they also strive to clarify and sharpen some of the ideas proposed in the theories of the post-postmodern.The second part of the volume aims to show that it is not only the contemporary texts that move beyond the postmodern – the ways of reading literature and interpreting artworks in different media are also changing. The essays in the second part of the volume inquire about the effects of the contemporary literary culture on the methods of interpretation and ways of reading.

    Description: Contrary to the secularism thesis of the 20th century, religion did not disappear from the Western experience. Rather, religiosity took on new forms, which emphasized individuality, experientiality, and corporeality, and highlighted lifestyle consumption. These new spiritualities came to be understood as the opposite of religiosity: people identified themselves as being not religious, but spiritual. The book examines new spiritualities as a concept, a phenomenon, and a subject of research. It introduces the history of the concept and the different past approaches in the research field, and discusses the diversity of the phenomenon of new spiritualities, especially in 21st century Finland, through various case studies. The book shows the multiple ways in which new spiritualities intertwine with different sectors of the society and blur spirituality’s boundary with religion, health care, art, and popular culture, for example. The book is the first book-length presentation in Finnish of the field of new spiritualities.

    Description: Sofi Oksanen is the most visible and widely discussed Finnish author of the 21st century, yet her novels have gained less attention than her public performances. This study shifts the focus from the author’s persona to her literary art, proposing to read Oksanen’s fiction from the methodological viewpoint of the rhetorical theory of narrative. Accordingly, Oksanen’s six novels published to date – Stalinin lehmät, Baby Jane, Puhdistus, Kun kyyhkyset katosivat, Norma, and Koirapuisto – are considered as examples of authorial rhetoric and ethics, as narrative and textual constructions, and as affective readerly experiences. Instead of only following the rhetorical theory’s emphasis on character, plot, and progression, however, the study develops a new kind of narrative rhetoric, which also pays attention to language and politics. In the study, Sofi Oksanen emerges as a feminist narrative artist, who employs fiction as a serious rhetorical resource in order to say something worthwhile about the past history as well as the contemporary world.

    Description: Human lives are crucially shaped by encounters of otherness – or, rather, various othernesses. This book explores the ethical challenge of developing an appropriate and respectful relation to other human beings by analyzing a number of historical and cultural cases of relating to the other. The topics range from barbarism, racist stereotypes, female rhetoric, and vampires to philosophical analyses of Finnish writers like Eino Leino and Väinö Linna, and from lyrical depictions of pain to an “antitheodicist” reflection on Primo Levi’s Holocaust writing. A chapter on what it means to take a critical distance to other human beings in the context of the covid-19 pandemic concludes the volume.     Description: This edited book is the third in a series of yearbooks that introduces the principles and applicability of the method of empathy-based stories. The book presents ten empirical studies which all use this method as a tool for data collection. In addition, the work examines the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories as a method and as part of qualitative research. The research articles in the book provide a current overview of the change in different work and operating environments. These environments include various educational institutions from elementary school to universities, social media, and human resource management. Studies examine the social inclusion, participation and agency of pupils, students, young people, and professionals, as well as the professional and ethical challenges of those working in new environments. The method of empathy-based stories is used to observe, for example, university students’ interpretations of involvement in the curriculum process, pupils' views on co-teaching, different forms of agency of young people who experience sexual harassment online, and the subjectivity of recruiters and the reasons for recruitment choices. Methodologically, the book focuses on the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories and considers the characteristics of the method among qualitative research methods. Reflecting on the research articles, the work discusses what kind of requirements and challenges the method poses for both the researcher and the respondents. The book provides guidelines for evaluating the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories, while participating also in a general discussion of the reliability, potential, and limitations of qualitative research. The book indicates how the method of empathy-based stories can be applied to a wide variety of research in different contexts. The strength of the method is its ability to utilize the respondents' imagination, thus providing the researchers with opportunities to find new perspectives and invent propositions.     Description: This collection of articles sheds light on the role of human language in interspecies interaction. The book shows that language is not necessarily what separates us from other creatures. It can also be seen as yet another dimension of human existence that is deeply rooted in our shared history and everyday life with other living beings. This volume contains six individual research articles, two short reviews, an opening introduction to the themes of the book, and an extensive, theoretical closing chapter. The studies draw on methodologies and theoretical approaches including conversation analysis and a cognitive, usage-based approach to grammatical constructions. The book further explores the interfaces of linguistics, biosemiotics, and posthumanism. The studies show how linguistic and interactional approaches can contribute to our understanding of how human and non-human animals communicate with each other during embodied activities, how human language users make sense of interspecies encounters in speaking to or about animals, and how human language is thereby impregnated by the presence of other species.     Description: This study explores the narration of existential feelings, or feelings of being in the world, in post-war Finnish prose fiction. The book presents five case studies which address modern individuals’ struggles in boundary situations of their lives. Rigorous readings of the works of Kerttu-Kaarina Suosalmi, Lassi Nummi, Marko Tapio, Tyyne Saastamoinen and Eeva-Liisa Manner all show the influence of French existentialism and its predecessors on post-war Finnish modernism for the first time in literary studies. The outsider figures and their experiences of the absurd, which have enticed the cultural imagination since ancient cults and the Book of Job, connect to the atmosphere of shared melancholy in post-war Finnish culture and society. The study participates in the rich contemporary debates on the effects of literature by focusing on less-discussed aspects of bodily feeling, affect, emotion and mood in late Finnish modernism. The book’s methodological contribution to narrative theory is that it combines a phenomenological analysis of reading with a rhetorical theory of narrative and politically informed, multidisciplinary emotion studies. The five case studies show how modernist outsider prose fiction in Finland resorts to irony, metafiction, allegory and the imaginative to generate ethically challenging narrative tension and an ambivalence of negative and positive emotion in readers. The opposing impulses of the aesthetic response produce an openness of interpretation. This openness provides us with the possibility of a more complex cultural understanding of emotion and ethics in the lives of strangers within literature and outside it.

    Description: Valco (1976–1980) was a state-owned company that manufactured cathode ray tubes for the television industry. The company’s scandalous failure has been widely identified as one of the largest investment errors in Finland’s economic history. This book is the first in-depth study of the roots, events, and consequences of that project. This study analyses Valco from a microhistorical perspective, looking at the numerous factors that led to its failure, from the company’s founding process to investigations after its demise. These events are linked to broader phenomena in economic and business history, such as the changing economic policy of the government and the emergence of global supply chains in the electronics industry. Valco is a significant single case with a concrete impact on Finland’s economic history. First, it changed the general perception of state-owned companies and, because of this, also more general perceptions of the role of the state in the economy. As a result, the initiative to develop the electronics industry was transferred to private companies such as Nokia. Second, Valco’s case revealed the problems of state ownership of companies in a very concrete way. Due to Valco’s failure, the objectives of state ownership were clarified, and the corporate governance system was modernised. In this way, Valco is linked to the modernization of Finnish state capitalism from the 1970s onwards.

In this book the text corpus in Kielipankki concerning Päätalo’s works is introduced to the readers, as well as the possibilities of digital text mining. This book includes scientific articles concerning the works of Kalle Päätalo. It also gives ideas for the research that can be carried out in the future. The authors of this book are researchers in the fields of history, linguistics and literature, respectively. The research results presented in this book speak for the fact that the Iijoki series is a significant source material for future research, for example from the point of view of oral history, language variation, metalanguage, swearing and the reader’s reception. The possibilities for future research seem to be quite plentiful.

    Description: In this book [titled Home, welfare work and vulnerability] the authors take the reader on welfare workers’ home visits to clients in need of support in their living. Welfare workers refer to professionals in health and social care who in the book are represented among others by social workers, social care workers and nurses. The main concepts of the book are home, welfare work and vulnerability and these are contemplated from different angles. Welfare work entails encountering people who are in vulnerable situations in the midst of their everyday lives. They may need support in coping with their mental health, with physical illnesses, with the challenges of achieving sobriety and recovery or perhaps with the difficulties accompanying old age. On the one hand their ability to act is limited and weak but on the other they have many kinds of strengths and resources. The book addresses a significant turning point in welfare services and work at which the objective is defined as the right of every individual to their own home and making living at home feasible for as long as possible. In the last fifty years or so many societal factors have made possible the dismantling of institutions, the reduction of places and the shortening of stays in institutions, the further development of care in the community, the construction of small residential and care facilities and most recently the further development of services to be taken into people’s homes. The last stage of this dismantling of institutions is referred to in the book as the “home turn”. As a societal change the home turn is complex – and that is how it is approached in the book. When one’s own home is the main place in which welfare policy and work are implemented, it is important to scrutinize more closely what actually occurs there and what special issues are connected to this given context. The book offers a timely point of view on the development of welfare services and the grass-root level welfare work done in the homes. It draws on interaction research based on ethnomethodology and human geography. Research data consist of recordings of home visits, researcher’s field diaries and interviews with clients and workers. The work includes both chapters providing conceptual and theoretical overviews and empirical research on the encounters between client and worker(s) on home visits. Welfare work accomplished in people’s homes entails many tensions and ethical issues which are analysed in the book and made visible through the means of research.

    Description: The book focuses on intangible and tangible heritage, language and vernacular religion of the Ingrians, Setos and Votes, three Finnic ethnic minorities sharing a long-standing identification with the Russian Orthodox faith. Written by 16 authors, the chapters are mainly based on nineteenth- and twentieth-century materials. The research history and collecting of folklore are also discussed.The historical area of the Ingrians and Votes is located in Ingria, adjacent to St. Petersburg, while the Setos have inhabited both sides of the border of southern Estonia and Russia. All three groups live on the borderline of the Eastern and Western Churches and cultural realms.Currently, the Ingrian and Votic languages are extremely endangered, while the Seto language has approximately 12,000 speakers. There is a high local interest in the maintenance and revitalisation of all three languages and cultural traditions.

    Description: The great change in European relations with Russia took place in 1478 when Muscovy replaced the trading Republic of Novgorod as a neighbor of Sweden, Livonia and Lithuania. Western Europe was since that year bordering to a bellicose great power with large resources causing dread. The feelings of dread caused by Russia with Czars like Ivan the Terrible became a standing theme in printed matter as well as politics and the image of Russia became very much similar to the image of Turkey, which threatened Europe from South-East. Various, usually rather negative, stereotype expressions characterized the vocabulary of the 16th century. The Peace of Stolbova in 1617 started a period of successive change. The era of Sweden as a Great Power led to growing knowledge about Russia in almost every respect, but it was still based on the already accepted stereotypes. They started, however, typically to seem more diluted and thin with time. The image of Russia as a threat was to a growing extent replaced by an image of a possibility. The perhaps most remarkable but rather unoriginal printed Swedish description of Russia of the era was Regni Muschovotici Sciographia, published by Petrus Petrejus. At the final stage of Sweden’s era as a great power there was a substantial widening but also polarization of the information on Russia. The Russian reform process during Tsar Peter I also began to influence the minds after the turn of the century in 1700. One of the principal describers of this process was Lars Johan Malm (Ehrenmalm), whose large manuscript about the power of the Russian Empire of that time, Några Anmärkningar Angående det Ryska Rijkets Nuvarande Macht from 1714, never reached the printers due to intervention from censors.

    Description: The present volume is a multidisciplinary collection of research articles exploring language use, language contact and multilingualism in the history of Turku, the first town in Finland, founded around the turn of the fourteenth century. Consisting of an introduction by the editors and nine case studies in the fields of linguistics, history, archeology, and literary and cultural studies, the volume participates in a wider discussion on multilingual communities while offering a closer look into linguistic encounters in Turku and its immediate vicinity. The volume covers the period from the Middle Ages (c. 1100–1500) to the latter half of the twentieth century. The case studies illustrate the wide array of languages, linguistic varieties and registers that the inhabitants and travellers used in their daily lives, the specific contexts in which certain languages were used, and the effects of these linguistic encounters at personal, social or institutional levels.

    Description: "The present case study investigates stress and recovery of the Danish national under- 20 ice hockey players during a training camp and the following World Championship. The aims were to track their stress-recovery states longitudinally, and to map their main sources of stress and recovery. Methods included a survey, qualitative interviews and a coach diary. Results showed well-balanced stress-recovery states during the entire period, and the athletes stated that this positively affected their well-being, and performance. The athletes’ perceived sources of stress and recovery were classified into organizational, social, personal and athletic, with the organizational decisions and strategies playing a major role in reducing unnecessary stress and providing a good setting for engaging in recovery. The results lead us to suggest that coaches and managers be very mindful of the potential influence of their decisions on the athletes’ stress and recovery when preparing training camps and participation in major competitions."
    Description: "I dette studie undersøgte vi de danske U-20 ishockeyspilleres stress og genopladning under en længerevarende træningslejr og det efterfølgende verdensmesterskab. Formålet var at følge udviklingen i spillernes stress-og genopladningsbalance samt at kortlægge deres oplevede kilder til stress og genopladning. Vi foretog dataindsamling via et spørgeskema, kvalitative interviews og en trænerdagbog. Resultaterne viste, at spillerne var i positiv stressgenopladningsbalance, hvilket i deres oplevelse havde en positiv indvirkning på deres trivsel og præstationer. Vi kunne inddele spillernes oplevede kilder til stress og genopladning i organisatoriske, sociale, personlige og sportslige, hvor beslutninger og strategier på organisatorisk niveau viste sig at spille en afgørende rolle i at reducere unødig stress og skabe gode rammer for genopladning. Med baggrund i resultaterne anbefaler vi, at trænere og sportschefer nøje overvejer, hvordan deres beslutninger og planlægning af træningslejre og konkurrencer potentielt har stor indflydelse på deres atleters stress og genopladning."

    Description: "In recent years there has been an increased focus on the importance of the environment for the development of elite athletes. In order to understand the factors that contribute to or limit an athlete’s sporting development, it is not enough to study only the individual but the whole environment in which the athlete develops. The purpose of this chapter is to investigate what characterizes a successful elite sport environment in Danish badminton. An elite sports environment that continuously manages to create senior results at the highest international level and win medals at the European championships, the World championships and the Olympics. The study was organized as a case study of the national elite sports center in Badminton Denmark (BD). Data was based on interviews with players, coaches and managers, observations on training and in competitions, meetings and analysis of documents. The environment was centered on self-understanding based on “us against the rest of the world” and a fundamental value in the environment was to create intelligent players while focusing on individual development through high training quality. The organizational culture was characterized by being: 1) a well documented, quality oriented and dialogue-based learning environment, 2) an environment with hard competition and 3) an environment with proximal role models."
    Description: "De seneste år har der været stigende fokus på miljøets betydning for udvikling af eliteidrætsudøvere. Det er sket ud fra en erkendelse af, at hvis man ønsker at forstå de faktorer, der medvirker til eller begrænser en udøvers sportslige udvikling, er det ikke nok kun at studere den enkelte atlet, men hele miljøet, som udøveren udvikler sig i. Formålet med dette kapitel er at undersøge, hvad der karakteriserer et succesfuldt eliteidrætsmiljø i dansk badminton, dvs. et eliteidrætsmiljø, der kontinuerligt formår at skabe seniorresultater på højeste internationale niveau og vinde medaljer ved EM, VM og OL. Undersøgelsen var et casestudie af eliteidrætsmiljøet i Badminton Danmark (BD). Der er indsamlet data fra interviews med spillere, trænere og ledere, observationer under træning og turneringer, interne møder og analyse af dokumenter. Miljøet var centreret omkring en selvforståelse baseret på ”os mod resten af verden”, og en grundlæggende værdi i miljøet var at skabe intelligente spillere og samtidig have fokus på individuel udvikling igennem høj træningskvalitet. Organisationskulturen var konstrueret som: 1) et veldokumenteret, kvalitetsorienteret og dialogbaseret læringsmiljø, 2) et miljø med hård intern konkurrence og 3) et miljø med nære rollemodeller."

    Description: "Tampere3 project, general knowledge, multicultural education, relocation of upper secondary school in a university campus, educational institution safety, wellbeing at work, successful recruitment process – these topics are discussed in eleven articles of this publication. The empirical data of these articles was collected during winter 2016-2017. Method of empathy based stories (MEBS) is a method for collecting qualitative data in which respondents write a story based on an orientation text, usually referred to as a frame story or a script. At least two different frame stories/scripts need to be formulated. MEBS data analysis is two-fold: firstly qualitative data analysis is based on the thematic framework of the research, furthermore the analysis imitates an empirical study and highlights the influence of the alteration of one factor in the frame story. MEBS has been utilized increasingly in various research fields in Finland since 1982. MEBS is in principle flexible and easy-to-use method, therefore it can be applied to explore a variety of research questions. The topics researched can be theoretically sophisticated and structured. They can be based on earlier research as well as to solve questions of more pragmatic nature. Despite the ostensible simplicity of using MEBS, many aspects need careful consideration and decisions need to be made especially in the data collection phase. So the last chapter of the publication concentrates on the formulation process of frame stories and data collection in an increasingly digitalized and diversified society. This publication is the first volume of the yearbook series introducing MEBS and research."
    Description: "Tampere3-hanke, yleissivistys, maahanmuuttajien koulutus, lukion siirto yliopistokampukselle, oppilaitosturvallisuus, työhyvinvointi, onnistunut rekrytointiprosessi... Näitä kaikkia aiheita käsitellään teoksen 11 tutkimusartikkelissa, joiden empiirinen aineisto on kerätty eläytymismenetelmällä talvella 2016­–2017. Eläytymismenetelmällä tarkoitetaan tiedonhankintamenetelmää, jossa vastaajat kirjoittavat kertomuksen tutkijan antaman, kehyskertomukseksi kutsutun orientaation perusteella. Kehyskertomuksia on aina vähintään kaksi erilaista ja aineisto analysoidaan kahteen kertaan: normaalina tutkimuksen tematiikasta kertovana laadullisena aineistona sekä kokeellisen tutkimuksen asetelmaa imitoiden ja pelkistäen sitä, mikä vastauksissa muuttuu, kun kehyskertomuksessa muutetaan yhtä keskeistä tekijää. Eläytymismenetelmää on käytetty eri tieteenaloilla yhä enenevissä määrin Suomessa vuodesta 1982 alkaen. Menetelmä sopii varsin monenlaisten tutkimusongelmien selvittämiseen joustavuutensa ja eräänlaisen kevytkäyttöisyytensä vuoksi. Aiheet voivat olla teoreettisesti jäsentyneitä ja aiemmasta tutkimuksesta ponnistavia mutta myös käytännön ongelmista inspiroituvia. Näennäisestä helppoudestaan huolimatta menetelmän käyttöön liittyy paljon pohdittavaa ja päätettävää erityisesti aineiston keräämisen vaiheessa. Eläytymismenetelmän käyttöä kehitetäänkin teoksen päättävässä menetelmäartikkelissa siitä näkökulmasta, miten menetelmälle keskeiset kehyskertomukset kannattaa muotoilla ja miten niiden avulla aineisto on kerättävissä digitalisoituvassa ja monikielistyvässä yhteiskunnassamme. Teos on ensimmäinen volyymi eläytymismenetelmää ja sillä toteutettavaa tutkimusta esittelevässä vuosikirjojen sarjassa. "

    Description: "Towards New Beginnings: Journalists’ Descriptions about Ruptures in Media Work This volume reveals a previously untold view on changes in media work in Finland. Finnish journalists relate their experiences of being made redundant or deciding to resign, and their views on their profession in a time of flux. The data are based on telephone surveys, in-depth interviews and journalists’ written accounts. Journalists are riddled with insecurity about their future. They feel they have borne the brunt of misplaced investments and the economic conjuncture, and their work motivation and creativity have suffered due to recurring layoffs in newsrooms. Support from employment authorities for finding a new job has also been practically non-existent, and coping with a career change has generated further stress and insecurity. However, journalists who have found new employment typically feel more comfortable in these jobs than in their former work. Career shifters have also been able to make use of their journalistic skills in their new jobs and identify themselves as journalists. The authors are from the Research Centre for Journalism, Media and Communication (COMET) at the University of Tampere, Finland. The study was funded by the Finnish Work Environment Fund and the Foundation for Promoting Journalistic Culture (JOKES). "
    Description: " Teos tarjoaa uutta, kokemusperäistä tietoa toimittajista mediatyön murroksessa. Suomalaiset journalismin tekijät kertovat kokemuksistaan ja näkemyksistään, kun oma työsuhde päättyy irtisanomiseen tai irtisanoutumiseen ja kun oma ammatti käy läpi merkittävää murrosvaihetta. Toimittajien kokemuksia yt-neuvotteluista, työttömyydestä ja uudelleentyöllistymisestä on koottu teosta varten puhelinkyselyllä, teemahaastatteluin sekä toimittajien laatimilla kirjoitelmilla. Tutkimuksen mukaan toimittajia jäytää epävarmuus tulevaisuudesta. Ammattikunta kokee joutuneensa virheinvestointien ja suhdanteiden sijaiskärsijäksi, ja työmotivaatio sekä luovuus ovat kärsineet toistuvien yt-kierrosten takia. Uuden työn löytäminen on jäänyt jokaisen omalle kontolle; työvoimaviranomaisilta ei ole herunut edes rohkaisua uuteen alkuun. Vanhasta työstä luopuminen ja uuteen sopeutuminen ovat kuormittaneet ja luoneet epävarmuutta esimerkiksi pärjäämisestä. Tutkimukseen haastatellut uudelleentyöllistyneet toimittajat kertoivat silti viihtyvänsä uudessa työssä paremmin kuin edellisessä työpaikassa. Vaikka toimittaja oli vaihtanut toiselle alalle, hän pystyi yhä hyödyntämään journalistista osaamistaan ja tuntemaan itsensä edelleen toimittajaksi. Teos on tarkoitettu paitsi tutkijoille ja opiskelijoille myös mediatyötä ja laajemminkin tietotyötä tekeville. Se sopii luettavaksi myös muille mediasta ja työelämästä kiinnostuneille. However, more essential for the future of the welfare state is its' social foundation, meaning people’s experiences of fairness, equality and reliability of the society as well as the welfare state's capability of taking care of the most vulnerable groups of people. A functional welfare state combines economic stability with the social foundation. However in the mid 2010s there are cracks in the social foundation of the welfare state . In this book the cracks of welfare state's social foundation are analysed from the perspective of dependency on social security. Especially the Finns' attitudes and political divisions, policies, the length of customership of last-resort social security, the functionality of service and income transfer systems, social segmentation created by breadlines and coping on the last-resort social security are observed. The book is meant for all interested in the condition and future of the welfare state. It is suitable as a textbook in universities and universities of applied sciences. The editor of the book, Juho Saari, is Professor in social and health policy at the University of Tampere and part-time Professor in welfare sociology at the University of Eastern Finland. Soon these encouraging views, however, turned completely opposite. Dismissing attitudes towards Kivi’s play were dominant until the 1960s when new theatre productions made its artistic merits worthy of consideration again. The critical edition of Karkurit gives a new and more versatile image of Aleksis Kivi as a playwright and helps to understand his tragedy in the light of the changing artistic ideals of different periods and generations. The edition contains a scholarly edited and richly annotated text of the tragedy’s first edition. Expert introductions by leading authorities illuminate the multidimensional dramaturgy of the play and reflect its relation to the European drama traditions and the socio-historical context of 19th-century Finland.     Description: Aberrations of Reason. Capitalist Rationality and its Critique in Juha Seppälä’s Novels Yhtiökumppanit (The Partners, 2002), Paholaisen haarukka (Devil’s Fork, 2008) and Mr. Smith (2012). Juha Seppälä’s early literary works, published in the 1980s and in the early 1990s, usually described spiritually lonely men who suffered from an existential loss of meaning and serious alienation problems in the modern world. After this, Seppälä turned to deal with the transformation of the Finnish way of life and its cultural base, until after the turn of the new millennium he began to critically judge society’s ongoing marketization process. This study analyses his capitalism-critical works, particularly his novels Yhtiökumppanit (The Partners, 2002), Paholaisen haarukka (Devil’s Fork, 2008) and Mr. Smith (2012). These works do not, primarily, consider contemporary market capitalism from a class perspective, although this sort of perspective is also included in them. They are, above all, critical of market capitalist rationality. According to Seppälä, the basic problem of modern economic profit-seeking lies in the fact that in its unchecked form it is largely indifferent with respect to existential, moral, social and ecological values and principles. Free market economy or market capitalism has, therefore, a destructive influence on individuals, communities and ecological systems. The novels at issue emphasize that due to this it is also, in a deeper sense, incapable of producing existentially meaningful ways of life.

    Description: As the highest internal decision-making body within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, the General Synod began, from 1876, congregating in Turku every tenth, and then eventually, every fifth year. By the 1960s, this decision-making system was becoming unsatisfactory. An extensive project to answer to the general ideals of the era and to strengthen the efficiency and democracy of the Church administration was initiated. The reformed General Synod got underway in 1974 with biannual gatherings. It was a body consisting of 108 members, including lay representatives, clergymen and the bishops. The General Synod retained its right to decide on ecclesiastical books and continued to hold the sole right to make proposals regarding the Church Act. A new task was to decide on the budget of the entire Church organisation and to steer the activities of the Church as a whole. Additionally, the General Synod received the general authority to handle any issues related to faith and doctrine, such as ecumenical issues. The book Kansankirkko ristipaineessa (A national folk church under conflicting pressures) takes a close look at the General Synod representatives during the years 1974–2011 and clarifies who the members of the Synod were, how they were elected and what they achieved. The study examines which of these persons held the most power, and what types of coalitions stood out within the work of the General Synod. In addition, the book aims to provide a general overall picture of the General Synod in relation to the Church, economic life, legislation, theological dialogue and the media. The study examines how well the intentions that drove the reform of the General Synod were realised and whether the General Synod was actually progressing as slowly or as briskly as expressed by different observers at different times. Discussions surrounding female ordination, sexual ethics and ecclesiastical books indicate the position of the General Synod within an increasingly diversified society. During the first decade of the 2000s, the General Synod experienced a similar revolution in terms of values as it had when preparing the reform of the Synod around the turn of the 1960s and 70s. The Church began to find itself once again in a missionary situation.

    Description: "This book provides the reader with understanding of the phenomenon of silent resistance, collecting and presenting research on it. Regulating, governing or controlling human activity often generates open resistance, which has been studied from the points of view of democracy, civil disobedience or political activism, for example. However, power relations and conflicts can also involve another kind of resistance, which may not necessarily even be recognised as resistance at first. It can be called silent, passive, invisible or everyday resistance. Silent resistance is a way of the subjugated or otherwise marginalised to challenge the dominant rules or systems. Because it does not proclaim resistance but rather tries to stay out of publicity, it is risk-free and low-profile activity that is seemingly non-political – and you can get away with it. Silent resistance can take many different forms: it may appear, for example, as silence and grumbling, isolation, avoiding and hindering issues or shifting attention to something irrelevant. The importance of everyday resistance rises from the signals of small networks in a situation where open confrontation is not possible or desired, but total inactivity is not an option either. Moreover, silent resistance remaining in the margin cannot be considered separate from open resistance, but as an important part in the process of realising more open resistance. Although power relations serve as the event framework of the phenomenon, silent resistance is a weapon not only in the hands of the subjugated. Its tactics can also be used by those who hold power. With the articles in the book, the reader can follow the most diverse situations of silent resistance through both historical and contemporary events.     Description: The topic of the book is the incremental growth of linguistic knowledge from lexical to structural-cum-textual during the so-called later language development. Language mastery does not presuppose any acquaintance with prescriptive grammar but, instead, concerns the core of language which the so-called consensus principle applies to: the most frequent words and structures are mastered with certainty by everybody, but uncertainty increases as less frequent and more variable phenomena are taken into consideration. It is the goal of the study to make explicit the knowledge that is common to school children of different age groups, and to show how it develops both in its core and in its fringe areas. The mastery of less common aspects exhibits considerable statistical variation. The research embodies methodological pluralism insofar as it has been carried out by means both of the corpus method and the experimental method. Here experimental subsumes writing tasks, paper-and-pencil tests, and behavior under experimental conditions. The amount of participants native in Finnish varies from 300–2000. The book has a bipartite structure: mastery of meanings (Part I), and mastery of forms (Part II).

    Description: "Curriculum Studies (opetussuunnitelmatutkimus in Finnish) comprise an international, multidisciplinary academic approach to creating discursive spaces for restructuring of the historical, theoretical and organisational complexities and interdisciplinary intertwinements present in current education and curriculum practices. While critically registering the international trends, Curriculum Studies can provide an integrative and coordinative framework for national education policy making, curriculum reforms, teachers’ pre- and in-service education and the daily work of teachers. Curriculum Studies is an indispensable element in teacher education programs in order to expand the professional horizon of student teachers and make their tacit assumptions of education and teaching more explicit and articulate. The book consists of ten peer-reviewed articles, which are organised according to three main themes. The first theme, A history of Finnish curriculum theory, would render an effort to explicate and contextualise the historical trajectories embodied in today’s curriculum and education theories and ideals. The two traditional master narratives, the German-Scandinavian Bildung with the Anglo-American Curriculum, have provided the contested platform for Finnish education and curriculum theories and practices. The second theme – The conflicting nature of prevailing teacher education discourses and the need for their more comprehensive and contextualised articulation – serves to juxtapose the dilemma between academic expectations and the actual working conditions of teachers. The role of teacher education is considered vital to dealing with these tensions. Another purpose of the theme is an attempt to expand and complicate the intellectual horizon of the taken-for-granted conception of the curriculum. The third theme of the book, The teacher as a curriculum theorist and curriculum maker, examines how the teacher and the school are cross-pressured by the conflicting interests of school and teacher autonomy and external supervision and evaluation. In addition, the issues of educational leadership amid the ideological tensions of the curriculum and how this complex can be engaged with the role of the teacher is scrutinised to some extent. In particular, the focal point here is the 2014 Finnish basic education curriculum reform. At best, Curriculum Studies can render the institutional education more transparent, vertically by exposing its historical trajectories and horizontally by revealing its present circumstances and political affiliations. As an academic field, the intellectual ambition of Curriculum Studies is to increasingly become aware of the normative, political and knowledge/power dynamics of education under constant negotiation with all its intended and unintended consequences. "

Toisessa kirjan teemassa, Opettajankoulutuksen diskurssien jännitteisyys ja monipuolistaminen, puretaan dilemmoja, joissa koulutukseen kohdennetut akateemiset ja tieteelliset odotukset törmäävät opettajan työtodellisuuteen liittyviin vaatimuksiin. Opettajankoulutuksen rooli jännitteiden purkamisessa nähdään keskeisenä. Lisäksi tarkastelussa pyritään opetussuunnitelmadiskursseja monimutkaistamalla laajentamaan opetussuunnitelmaa koskevaa ymmärrystä. Kolmannessa kirjan teemassa, Opettaja opetussuunnitelman tulkitsijana ja toteuttajana, tarkastellaan koulun ja opettajan asemaa autonomian ja ulkoisen ohjauksen ristipaineessa sekä opettajaa pedagogisena johtajana ja opetussuunnitelman ideologisuutta tulkitsevana toimijana. Katse suunnataan myös vuoden 2014 perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelmauudistukseen. Opetussuunnitelmatutkimus tekee näkyväksi sen, miten institutionaalinen kasvatus on sekä historiallista että poliittista; se on arvosidonnaista, jännitteistä ja jatkuvan neuvottelun kohteena olevaa. Sitä koskevissa neuvotteluissa kaikilla päätöksillä ja ratkaisuilla on seurauksensa. "

In particular, the book discusses how cities were imagined through the prism provided by other cities, major events, as well as alternative pasts and futures. How –with admiration, indifference or contestation– did various urban actors engage with the city as a stage? The book paints a multifaceted picture of the history of urban events and town twinning, while at the same illustrating how students and travellers experienced cities such as Berlin, Rome, Helsinki, and Tampere. As for individual urban events, Stockholm’s General Art and Industrial Exposition of 1897, Helsinki’s 400th anniversary of 1950, and the Moscow Youth Festival of 1957 are all given their own chapter.

However, an individual without a community and socially shared learning processes is not an ideal for learning the skills for cooperation, creativity, or solving common problems. This book introduces the readers the perspective of identity development to learning processes, and particularly the questions of learning information literacy. The revised national school curriculum 2014 in Finland (implemented from Fall term 2016) emphasizes developing the students’ metaskills for learning.     Description: The ten articles in this edited volume examine the city of Varkaus as a small city struggling with structural change using historical documents as well as survey and interview data. The city of Varkaus, which has a long industrial history, has lost a large part of its industrial jobs in the first decades of this millennium and its population has fallen sharply in recent years. However, a survey of the adult population shows that the inhabitants of Varkaus are typically satisfied with their work, with their social relationships and their lives in general. Varkaus is seen as a safe and good living environment. A central element of well-being is couple relationship, as well as other social relationships. The lack of well-being often stems from unemployment, low income and feelings of not belonging to the place of residence. Young adults value their place of residence as well as their family relationships, but there are tensions in their life regarding work and income. The tranquility and proximity to nature of Varkaus are appreciated, but there are also many who long for more urban heartbeat in their hometown.
    Description: Tässä kymmenestä artikkelista koostuvassa kokoomateoksessa tarkastellaan Varkautta rakennemuutoksen kanssa kamppailevana pienenä kaupunkina historiallisia dokumentteja sekä vuosina 2016–2017 kerättyjä kysely- ja haastatteluaineistoa hyödyntäen. Pitkän teollisuushistorian omaava Varkauden kaupunki on tämän vuosituhannen ensimmäisinä vuosikymmeninä menettänyt suuren osan teollisista työpaikoistaan ja sen väestö on supistunut voimakkaasti. Kuitenkin koko aikuisväestöä edustava kysely kertoo, että varkautelaiset ovat tyypillisesti tyytyväisiä työhönsä, sosiaalisiin suhteisiinsa ja elämäänsä muutenkin. Varkaus nähdään turvallisena ja hyvän elämän puitteet tarjoavana asuinpaikkana. Hyvinvoinnin tärkeitä osatekijöitä ovat parisuhde ja muut sosiaaliset suhteet. Hyvinvoinnin puutteet liittyvät työttömyyteen, pienituloisuuteen sekä ulkopuolisuuden tunteisiin suhteessa asuinpaikkaan. Nuoret aikuiset arvostavat omaa asuinpaikkakuntaansa sekä perhe- ja sukulaisuussuhteitaan, mutta arkielämään liittyy jännitteitä työn ja toimeentulon osalta. Varkauden rauhallisuutta ja luonnonläheisyyttä arvostetaan, mutta monet toivoivat siltä myös enemmän kaupunkimaista sykettä.

    Description: With this publication, the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein and the Danish State Archives celebrate the 75th anniversary of the signing of the German-Danish Archives Agreement. As is already a tradition in German-Danish archival cooperation, this is done in German and Danish. All texts of the publication are therefore available in both languages.The former archivist Hans Kargaard Thomsen, Copenhagen, wrote a detailed report in the 1990s entitled "Arkivoverenskomsten med Tyskland 1933 og dens forhistorie" ("The Archives Agreement with Germany of 1933 and its Prehistory"). It forms the core of the publication. This is followed by guidelines on the use of archival material exchanged in 1936 under the agreement between Germany and Denmark. The archivists Malte Bischoff, Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein, and Hans Schultz Hansen, Landsarkivet for Sønderjylland, are the authors of these texts. The annex contains the wording of the German-Danish archive agreement.

    Description: Songs and writings: oral and literary cultures in early-modern Finland renews the understanding of exchange between the learned culture of clergymen and the culture of commoners, or “folk”. What happened when the Reformation changed the position of the oral vernacular language to literary and ecclesiastical, and when folk beliefs seem to have become an object for more intensive surveillance and correction? How did clergymen understand and use the versatile labels of popular belief, paganism, superstition and Catholic fermentation? Why did they choose particular song languages, poetic modes and melodies for their Lutheran hymns and literary poems, and why did they avoid oral poetics in certain contexts while accentuating it in others? How were the hagiographical traditions representing the international medieval literary or “great” tradition adapted to “small” folk traditions, and how did they persist and change after the Reformation? What happened to the cult of the Virgin Mary in local oral traditions? The first Finnish 16th-century reformers admired the new Germanic models of Lutheran congregational hymns and avoided the Finnic vernacular Kalevala-metre idiom, while their successors picked up many vernacular traits, most notably alliteration, in their ecclesiastical poetry and hymns. Over the following centuries, the new features introduced via new Lutheran hymns such as accentual metres, end-rhymes and strophic structures were infusing into oral folk poetry, although this took place also via secular oral and literary routes. On the other hand, seventeenth-century scholars cultivated a new academic interest in what they understood as “ancient Finnish poetry”. The book has an extensive English Summary for the international readership.

Tutkimuksen pääkysymyksiä ovat: Miksi jätevesien puhdistaminen on keskitetty vain yhteen puhdistamoon? Miksi Espoossa tehdään ylikunnallista yhteistyötä jätevesienpuhdistuksessa? Miten jätevesien puhdistusyhteistyö on alkanut ja muuttunut vuosien varrella? Miksi puhdistetaan naapurikuntien jätevesiä? Millaista keskustelua jätevedet ovat herättäneet menneisyydessä ja millaista tulevaisuutta koskevaa keskustelua niistä on käyty? Oikean strategian toteuttamisessa tarvitaan yhteistyötä ja osaavaa johtamista. Espoo on voinut historiassa käyttää omien resurssiensa lisäksi vesihuollossa myös naapurikuntien resursseja. Nyt tarkastelukohteena olevan jätevesienpuhdistuksen osalta tämä on tarkoittanut sitä, että naapurikunnat ovat maksaneet osansa ja osin enemmänkin kuin osansa jätevesiensä puhdistamisesta ja varsinkin Suomenojan jätevedenpuhdistamosta. Näiden lisäresurssien turvin historian saatossa kertyneet resurssit ovat mahdollistaneet nykyisen hyvän tilanteen pitkän tähtäimen strategisten päätösten avulla. Näistä strategisista päätöksistä yksi konkreettisin näyttö ovat jätevesiä koskevat sopimukset naapurikuntien kanssa. Sopimukset ja niiden takana olleet päätökset ovat hyvin kaukonäköisiä ja kaikkia osapuolia sitovia. Ne osaltaan mahdollistavat, että valittavana on ollut kehityspolkuja, joita kaikkialla ei ole ollut käytössä. Vuoden 2010 alusta alkaen Espoon vesihuolto on toiminut yhdessä pk-seudun organisaatiossa alueen muiden vesilaitosten kanssa, HSY:n organisaation alaisuudessa.

    Description: This book explores the media coverage of three prominent Finnish labor market cases in the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. It analyzes how this arena supported or undermined the power positions of each side and the reaching of the contract. The cases in study are the first proper general agreement in 1968 (Liinamaa 1) and the endeavors for so-called “social contract” by the Government of Esko Aho (1991) and Juha Sipilä (2015). The study identifies changes and continuities in the political discourses, in the ways of making validity claims in political argumentation, and in media/journalistic interventionism. These content analytical viewpoints illustrate the theoretical ideas about mediatization of politics presented in the book. By analyzing corporatist and pluralist aspects of decision making, the book opens a view in the relationships among labor market organizations, the Government, and the media in the three decades studied.

    Description: Discursive study of religion (DSR) has become an increasingly recognised and applied approach to the study of religion. It asks: What passes for ‘religion’ in society? How do different constructions of ‘religion’ affect other social spheres such as politics, law, and everyday life, and vice versa? In this collection, Finnish scholars—many of them internationally recognized authorities on the subject—discuss DSR’s theoretical underpinnings, map the variety of discursive approaches, and apply the approach to case studies of politics, spirituality, and history. The book can be used as a textbook for religion and method courses in various disciplines.

    Description: This collection of critical essays concentrates on the renowned Finnish collage novel Aperitiff ‒ avoin kaupunki (Aperitiff, Open City) by Kari Aronpuro in its three editions (1965, 1978, 2015). The essays provide a theoretically wide-ranging and up-to-date introduction to Aperitiff but also to collage and the collage novel more generally. Aperitiff is approached from the viewpoints of source materials; information, media technologies, and conceptualism; facsimiles as images of writing; methodological and thematic humour and comedy; Situationist reading strategies; realist and neorealist cinema; and Aperitiff‘s relation to the contemporary Finnish experimental novel, especially to Neuromaani by Jaakko Yli-Juonikas. The collection also reprints Aronpuro’s early essay on the reception of Aperitiff, and extracts from the typescript of the novel’s second edition.
    Description: Tämä artikkelikokoelma on laajin Kari Aronpuron Aperitiff – avoin kaupunki -romaanin kolmea versiota (1965, 1978, 2015) käsittelevä teos. Kokoelma tarjoaa teoreettisesti monipuolisen ja otteeltaan tuoreen johdatuksen paitsi Aperitiffiin myös yleisemmin kollaasiromaanin edelleen ajankohtaiseen lajiin ja kollaasin käsitteeseen. Antologian kirjoittajien valitsemat näkökulmat kertovat Aperitiffin moniaineksisuudesta, moniulotteisuudesta ja monitulkintaisuudesta. Artikkeleissa inventoidaan ja kartoitetaan Aperitiffin laajoja aineistoja sekä konkreettisten lainausten että laajemman intertekstuaalisuuden näkökulmista. Aperitiffia käsitellään myös informaation ja mediateknologioiden kautta. Samalla romaani kytketään suuntaukseen, joka on ollut keskeinen Kari Aronpurolle 2000-luvulla: kirjalliseen konseptualismiin, käsitteelliseen tai ”epäluovaan” kirjoittamiseen. Artikkeleissa keskitytään lisäksi tekstikollaasille oleelliseen menetelmään, tekotapaan tai tyyppiin: faksimileen. Samalla puretaan sanan ja kuvan käsiteparia analysoimalla kirjoituksen itsensä kuvallisuutta, tyypittelemällä tekstikollaaseja faksimilen näkökulmasta sekä ottamalla huomioon kirjan sivun teknologiaa. Aiheena on myös Aperitiffin huumori ja komiikka metodisten ja temaattisten tekijöiden yhteisvaikutuksena. Kollaasit, tekstilainaukset ja -luettelot sekä teoksen ontologialla leikittely ovat romaanin omalaatuisen huumorin rakennusaineita. Aperitiffia luetaan niin ikään urbaanin suunnistamisen ja harhailun näkökulmasta, erityisesti hyödyntämällä Kansainvälisiltä Situationisteilta peräisin olevia käsitteitä. Aperitiffia lähestytään myös kuvallisuuden, erityisesti elokuvallisuuden kautta ja tarkastellaan sen yhteyksiä realismin ja neorealismin traditioihin sekä ”todellisuuden” esittämiseen liittyviin diskursseihin. Aperitiffin pitkittäisvaikutuksia suomalaisessa kirjallisuudessa tutkitaan Jaakko Yli-Juonikkaan Neuromaani-romaanin (2012) kautta, teosten julkaisuajankohtia ja rakennusperiaatteita vertaillen. Tämän luennan valossa moniaineksisten avantgarde-romaanien poetiikka näyttäytyy edelleen erittäin elin- ja ilmaisuvoimaisena. Antologian liitteenä on myös arkistoharvinaisuuksia: pienoisessee, jossa Aronpuro ruotii tuoreeltaan (marraskuussa 1965) romaaninsa vastaanottoa ja kommentoi omaa teostaan, sekä otteita toisen painoksen (1978) lisämateriaalien käsikirjoitusliuskoista.

    Description: Social and the ecological welfare should be taken as the main aim of all politics. This is the message of this book titled The Enchantment of Social Policy. Basic social security system needs to be rebuilt and grounded on the universal basic income that everyone can top up by participating to the society in different ways. Universal basic income can be seen as a mean to recognize all valuable participation to for example voluntary work or care of elderly people. In conditions of high unemployment, this kind of universalistic social security would weaken the nexus between employment and welfare. It would promote a society and culture that is less dependent on the exploitation of natural resources. This book describes building blocks that are needed to reconstitute the enchantment of social policy – the utopian that we should collectively pursue.
    Description: Sosiaalipolitiikan Lumon kirjoittajilla on viesti. Mielestämme politiikan keskeiseksi tavoitteeksi tulisi asettaa sosiaalinen ja ekologinen hyvinvointi. Tätä tavoitetta kohti tulisi kulkea universalismin periaattein ja kansalaisten perusturva, oli sitten kyse työllisistä tai työttömistä, nuorista tai iäkkäistä, kantaväestöstä tai maahanmuuttajista, tulisi rakentaa kaikille yhtäläisen perustulon pohjalle. Tätä perusturvaa jokainen voisi täydentää ansiotuloilla ja omaehtoisella, sosiaaliturvassa kompensoitavalla osallistumisella yhteiskunnalliseen työhön kuten vapaaehtoistyöhön, harrastusryhmien ohjaamiseen, omaisen tai lasten hoivaan. Tämä antaisi arvon monenlaiselle hyödylliselle toimelle, joka nyt jää yhteiskunnassa tunnistamatta. Tällainen sosiaaliturva ottaisi lähtökohdakseen uuden ihmisarvon ja loisi luonnonvaroja säilyttävää ja niukkaan materian käyttöön perustuvaa kulttuuria ja taloutta. Sosiaalipolitiikalla olisi tällaisessa politiikassa aktiivinen ja yhteiskunnan taloudellista ja sosiaalista kehitystä vauhdittava rooli, ja kansalaiset olisi kutsuttu hyvinvoinnin aktiivisiksi tekijöiksi.

    Description: Nurses have been recruited to Finland from the Philippines since 2008. Although the numbers are relatively low, the phenomenon is new and has thus given rise to a manifold societal debate. It has been questioned, whether the international recruitment of nurses is an ethically and economically sustainable solution to the shortage of nursing staff in Finland. This publication serves as a forum where various agents in the international recruitment processes can get their voice to be heard. A multi-perspective approach is used to enable researchers to provide a fair, equivalent and empirically-validated illustration of the causes and consequences of international recruitment processes.
    Description: Suomeen on rekrytoitu vuodesta 2008 lähtien sairaanhoitajia Filippiineiltä. Määrät eivät ole suuria, mutta koska ilmiö on suhteellisen uusi, toiminta on herättänyt vilkasta yhteiskunnallista keskustelua puolesta ja vastaan. Kriittisissä puheenvuoroissa on kyseenalaistettu paitsi toiminnan eettisyys myös taloudellinen kannattavuus. Tässä julkaisussa filippiiniläishoitajien rekrytointia tarkastellaan kansainvälisen rekrytointiprosessin eri osapuolten näkökulmista. Erilaisten näkökulmien yhdistämisellä pyritään muodostamaan mahdollisimman tasapuolinen, tutkimustietoon perustuva kokonaiskuva kansainvälisen rekrytoinnin syistä ja seurauksista.

    Description: The focus of this research is on Finland’s role in Soviet Union’s calculation of its foreign policy between 1920 and 1930. This was the first decade of both Finnish independence and of Soviet power in Russia. This book answers questions about the objectives of Soviet foreign policy in Finland, on the contacts used by the Soviet legation to obtain information, and on how well the Soviets understood Finland’s objectives. People interested in Finland and in Russian perspectives with regards to foreign policy and neighbouring countries will find much new in this book because it relies on formerly unpublished Russian archival material to form the basis for charting Soviet objectives in Finland. The book shows that the Soviets primarily observed Finland in a larger regional context along with other states on its borders in the Baltic Sea region. The global objectives of the revolution and the Soviet Union, but also the domestic political situation in both countries, are reflected on this framework. The period was characterized by forced collectivization in the Soviet Union and, in Finland, by the rise of the right-wing Lapua Movement that emerged at the onset of the Great Depression, laying the foundations for the most severe crisis in the relations during 1929–1930 when the issues surrounding these events destabilized simultaneously the society and political decision-making in both countries.

    Description: "The overall purpose of this study was to examine how a transformative and community psychological approach could affect a socially challenged neighbourhood and participants´ perceptions of involvement (young boys, 12–16 years). A social research experiment lasting 2 years was co-created between researchers, practitioners and participants. A multi-method approach was used to ensure that thorough and socially robust knowledge was produced. Methods used included questionnaires, interviews, fieldwork and observations. Although several notable results emerged throughout the intervention period, the most important results were related to the significance of the overall approach regarding these results. Despite the challenges faced by researchers, when engaging youth at the margins of society in a co-creation process, the approach seemed valuable. Giving the participants the possibility to engage themselves, through empowerment initiatives, seems to be a confounding reason for the success of the project. Hence, this article will focus upon the benefits of using a community psychological approach when working with exercise psychology in a socially deprived community."
    Description: "Det overordnede formål med dette studie var at undersøge, hvordan en handlingsrettet og community psykologisk tilgang påvirkede et socialt udsat boligområde og deltagernes opfattelse af sig selv og hinanden (unge drenge, 12–16 år). I den forbindelse blev der samskabt (co-created) et socialt eksperiment over en toårig periode imellem forsker, praktikere og deltagere. En multi-method tilgang blev anvendt for at sikre socialt robust viden. Metoderne omfattede spørgeskemaer, interviews, feltarbejde og observationer. Gennem interventionsperioden blev der rapporteret flere resultater på baggrund af projektet, men vigtigst synes at være den community psykologiske tilgangs betydning for disse resultater. Den valgte tilgang kan anses for at have været det centrale fundament for projektets succes i forhold til at engagere unge drenge på kanten af samfundet i en fælles skabelsesproces. I denne artikel fokuseres på fordelene ved at benytte en community psykologisk tilgang, når man ønsker at arbejde med idrætspsykologi i et socialt udsat boligområde."

    Description: Helsingin vedet 1800-luvun lopusta 2000-luvulle -tutkimus antaa yleiskuvan vesihuollon pitkästä kehityksestä ja ihmisen ja eri vesien suhteesta Helsingissä. Tässä kirjassa annetaan myös tietoa Suomen jätevedenpuhdistuksen historian monista vaiheista keskittyen Helsinkiin sekä perehdytään siihen, mitä vesi merkitsi ja miten siihen suhtauduttiin eri aikoina. Kirjassa perehdytään muun muassa Vantaanjoen ristiriitaiseen, mutta keskeiseen rooliin sekä viemärinä että raakavesilähteenä, saastumattoman ja riittävän raakavesivesilähteen löytämiseksi tehtyihin varhaisiin pohjavesitutkimuksiin, ulosteongelman ratkaisuun sekä Päijänteen ottamiseen raakavesilähteeksi. Teos taustoittaa viemäröinnin ja jätevesienpuhdistuksen historiaa koko Euroopan mittakaavassa tuhansien vuosien takaa. Erityisesti perehdytään Suomessa tehtyihin ratkaisuihin ja syvällisemmin Helsingin viemäröinnin varhaisiin vaiheisiin ja jätevedenpuhdistuksen alkutaipaleeseen. Keskeiseksi nousevat kysymykset, mitä toimia toteutettiin kun tavoitteeksi otettiin vesistöjen puhdistuminen, miten nämä toimenpiteet ovat vaikuttaneet asukkaiden elämään ja ympäristön tilaan. Lisäksi pohditaan mitkä ovat tulevaisuuden haasteet vesihuollon ammattilaisten näkökulmasta katsottuna.

    Description: “Channel Three will entertain you when television gets too serious”, the new entrant in Finland’s broadcast television announced proudly at its launch in 1986. Channel Three was the first fully commercial television channel in the Nordic countries, founded and owned by a group of odd bedfellows: the public broadcaster YLE, its long standing commercial companion MTV and a growing electronics giant Nokia. The plans to start a commercial TV station were first severely opposed by leading politicians, but it was finally approved as a means to fight back international satellite channels and the efforts of major newspaper companies to enter the television market. Drawing from media policy studies and based on archive documents, contemporary media coverage and interviews of the main actors, the book provides a thorough analysis of the stages of Channel Three, indicating how it, despite its short lifespan, contributed profoundly to the commercialization and marketization of television in Finland.

Soundscapes related to time, place and the everyday shape our perception of the present and the past. Sounds can be pleasant and beautiful, pacing the day or year, annoying, boring and everything in between. The theme of transforming soundscapes combines the research essays in the publication. The essays draw from various disciplines and methodologies: media studies, anthropological field work and sensory observation, textual analysis and close reading, folkloristics, archeoacoustics and music studies.     Description: This book [Mediatized power and the return of the political] describes Finnish decision-makers’ relationship with the media. It is based on surveys in 2009 and 2019. In 2009 there were 419 and in 2019 484 respondents, all of them having an influential position in some of the eight societal sectors covered in the study. The results show a moderate change from a consensus-oriented and networking decision-making culture towards a more ideologic and power-based way of negotiating. However, it seems that this has not affected how open or transparent the negotiation-processes are or how prone the decision-makers are to leak confidential information. The decision-makers’ relationship with media publicity has become more professional and strategic. The results point to an increased role of social media in communications management while the role of the news media seems to be diminishing. Even though the decision-makers view publicity as an even more risky and strategic arena of political struggle than they did before, they also seem now acknowledge more clearly the rational aspects of journalism. The self-reported role of media publicity as a source of personal authority has somewhat diminished while there seems to be no change in how prone the decision-makers think they are for the impacts of media publicity.

    Description: "Encounters, breaks and bonds: a study of the mother work in the Supermammat peer group This study explores a peer group for mothers, which is presented by the pseudonym Supermammat. The group is a third sector agent, which has served mothers and their children almost three decades. In the Supermammat group mothers get opportunity for carrying out functional programme, taking their children to organized childcare, sharing peer support and receiving professional aid. In addition to weekly meetings, outings, camps and other recreational activities are organized in the group. The aim of the operation is to support motherhood. The objective of the study is to describe practices of supporting mothers in the operation of the Supermammat group. The objective is approached by treating group’s history, current operation and principles directing it together with workers and their job towards supporting mothers participating in the operation of the Supermammat group. However, the study par excellence gives voice to people for whom the group has established. It’s most central aim is to tell what kind of meaning the operation of the group has for mothers. This is ethnographically executed case study, which starting point is to explore restricted research subject by utilizing different perspectives and datas. The core data consists of interviews of mothers participated in the operation of the Supermammat group (N=23) and fieldnotes gathered during participant observation. In addition, interviews of persons worked on the group (N=11) are included in the data. The data gathered is supplemented by the documents from the operation of the group. Research findings indicate that the operation of the group has turned more professional and functionally more various in the course of time. The operation consists of many elements, reaches dozens of mothers annually and requires contribution of several agents. Participating in the operation gets it’s meaning as encounters, breaks and bonds. The group gives an opportunity for encounters forming both peer support and professional aid. At the same time, it constructs a chance of withdrawing from everyday life by producing breaks to mother’s routines. In addition, participating in the operation of the Supermammat group gives space for constructing an affinity, various relationships and connections fastened on the group. "

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on kuvata käytäntöjä, joilla Supermammojen toiminnassa tuetaan siihen osallistuvia äitejä. Tavoitteeseen vastataan tarkastelemalla ryhmän historiaa, tämänhetkistä toimintaa ja sitä ohjaavia periaatteita sekä työntekijöitä ja tehtäviä, joita he toteuttavat Supermammojen toimintaan osallistuvien äitien tukemiseksi. Ennen kaikkea tutkimus kuitenkin antaa äänen ihmisille, joita varten Supermammojen ryhmä on perustettu. Sen keskeisin päämäärä on kertoa, millainen merkitys ryhmän toiminnalla on siihen osallistuneille äideille. Kyseessä on etnografisesti toteutettu tapaustutkimus, jonka lähtökohtana on rajatun tutkimuskohteen tarkastelu erilaisia näkökulmia ja aineistoja hyödyntäen. Keskeisin osa aineistoa ovat Supermammojen toimintaan osallistuneiden äitien haastattelut (N=23) ja osallistuvan havainnoinnin perusteella kirjatut kenttämuistiinpanot. Aineistoon kuuluu myös ryhmässä työskennelleiden henkilöiden haastatteluja (N=11) ja Supermammojen toiminnasta tuotettuja dokumentteja. Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, että Supermammojen toiminta on ajan kuluessa muuttunut paitsi professionaalisemmaksi myös toiminnallisesti moninaisemmaksi. Samalla se luo tilaisuuden arkielämästä irtaantumiselle tuottamalla katkoksia äidin arkeen. Lisäksi Supermammojen toimintaan osallistuminen antaa tilaa yhteenkuuluvuuden tunteen, moninaisten ihmissuhteiden ja ryhmään kiinnittyvien yhteyksien rakentumiselle. "

    Description: This collection of essays looks at the issue of human well-being from the point of view of environmental aesthetics. Questions addressed include: What role do aesthetic values have in advancing well-being? Are there environments that are particularly supportive of well-being? What is the place of aesthetic factors in environmental and city planning? The authors of the first part of the book illuminate the relationship between aesthetics and well-being by discussing such notions and ideas as aesthetic well-being, interactive environmental planning, aesthetic quality in urban planning, aesthetic footprint, and ecological aesthetics. The authors of this part also engage with many topical questions in environmental and everyday aesthetics. For example, Yuriko Saito’s idea of green aesthetics as well as Allen Carlson’s science-based model of the aesthetic appreciation of nature are critically examined.

    Description: Societal impact is an integral part of academic research today and researchers are expected to share their findings with research participants. Efforts to develop scientific research and science communication from one-way communication towards different forms of co-creation where the researcher and research participants produce knowledge and negotiate about its meaning and applicability through joint actions are in great demand. For the researcher, such developments have brought a new kind of access into the world of research participants and also novel reflections on one’s professional knowledge and identity and their boundaries. This book focuses on the human and social sciences and draws particular attention to the diverse encounters that occur between researchers and research participants at all stages of the research process when studying human subjects and activities. The book presents case studies of applied conversation analysis in a variety of professional contexts. The aim of the book is to shed light on the practices, possibilities, and challenges of applied research within the conversation analytic framework where the research participants’ authentic social situations become the target of the researcher’s detailed analysis. The articles of the book investigate social interaction in occupational health care, mental health rehabilitation, elderly care, welfare education, theatre rehearsals, social circus, military organization, software development, and workplace community break taking. These articles represent applied conversation analysis in different ways. The results of the research have been used in some of the articles, for example, in developing the professional practices of the workplace community whereas in some other articles the whole study has been undertaken collaboratively between researchers and professionals. Each article is divided into two parts: a conventional research report that analyses the patterns of social interaction in a particular professional setting is followed by a story where the authors reflect on how their study originated, how it progressed, and what kinds of encounters and choices it involved. The stories highlighting reciprocal interactions of the researcher and the research participants across the research process bring forth various voices and perspectives that conventionally are not considered as part of the research report. The book brings important information not only on the interactional phenomena examined in the articles but also on the diverse issues of conducting and applying research in professional contexts. It also discusses the practices and definitions of applied conversation analysis within the broader framework of applied research, universities’ third mission, and forms of knowledge and expertise in contemporary society.
