    Description: In Platonic Occasions, Richard Begam and James Soderholm reflect upon a wide range of thinkers, writers and ideas from Plato, Descartes and Nietzsche to Shakespeare, the Romantics and the Moderns—from Evil, Love and Death to Art, Memory and Mimesis. The dialogues suggest that Percy Shelley was right when he claimed “We are all Greeks,” and yet what have we learned about the initiatives of culture and literature since our classical predecessors? Begam and Soderholm’s ten dialogues function as a series of dual-meditations that take Plato as an intellectual godfather while presenting a new form of dialogic knowledge based on the friction and frisson of two minds contending, inventing and improvising. The authors discuss not only what is healthy and vigorous about Western culture but also consider where that culture is in retreat, as they seek to understand the legacy of the Enlightenment and its relation to the contemporary moment.Platonic Occasionsis an experiment in criticism that enjoins the reader to imagine what the dialogic imagination can do when inspired by Platonic inquiry, but not bound by a single master and the singular mind. Beyond Socratic maieutics and Cartesian meditation is a form of intellectual interplay where it is impossible not to be of two minds.

    Description: "In the two centuries since Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito was first performed, and the almost three centuries since Metastasio created the libretto, many rumours, myths and prejudiced opinions have gathered around the work, creating a narrative that Mozart, Mazzolà and their contemporaries would scarcely recognise. The essays in this book contribute ideas, facts and images that will draw the twenty-first-century reader closer to the events of Central Europe in the late eighteenth century, and these new facts and ideas will help peel off some of the transmitted accretions that may hinder a modern listener from enjoying and understanding the opera in all its fullness. In this sense the essays present the reappraisal promised in the title. The book is a product of the Performing Premodernity research project, funded by the Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences and based at the department of theatre studies of Stockholm University.     Description: In her well-known song, ‘Når himmelen faller ned’ (‘When the Sky Falls Down’), the Norwegian musician Anne Grete Preus described snow as ‘celestial tipp-ex’ and a mighty ‘wonder’. But what exactly is it that snow corrects? And what gives snow its power? Snow’s Formulas: A Natural Phenomenon in Literature attempts to answer these and similar questions by discussing the motif of snow in the context of modernization processes marked by increasing instrumentalization and rationalization. Snow transforms landscapes and defies modernity’s innovations; it simultaneously obscures and accentuates, and also enchants. This process can be described in different ways: as the sublime’s breakthrough in a philosophical, aesthetic sense, or, in a poetological sense, as non-mimetic writing. This strategy plays out in language, and the objective of this study has been to investigate snow’s rhetoricity and how literary depictions of snow can be in response to the challenges of modernity. The book includes readings of texts by H.C. Andersen, Olaf Bull, Hans Børli, Paul Celan, Alexander Kielland, Jonas Lie, Tor Ulven and Tarjei Vesaas, among others. The relationship between snow and modernity is illustrated from a dual perspective. Emphasis is placed on the individual’s position and self-perception within the process of modernization, as well as on the aesthetical problems that arise when writing about snow. Snow makes a white surface; it ‘overwrites’ the ground and encourages a non-mimetic poetry. Snow can be said to be an engine of modern aesthetics that does not take language’s referential aspect for granted.

Men hva er det egentlig som snø må korrigere, og i hva består dens makt? Snøens formler: Et naturfenomen i litteraturen søker svar på slike spørsmål idet snømotivet diskuteres på bakgrunn av moderniseringsprosessen, kjennetegnet ved økende instrumentalisering og rasjonalisering. Snø forandrer landskapet og sier modernitetens nyttetenkning imot; den tildekker og aksentuerer samtidig og fortryller. Denne prosessen kan beskrives på forskjellige måter: som det sublimes gjennombrudd i filosofisk-estetisk henseende, eller, i poetologisk henseende, som en form for avrealisering. Denne strategien utspiller seg i språk, og formålet med denne studien er å granske snøens retorisitet og hvordan den litterære fremstillingen av snø svarer på modernitetens utfordringer. Boken inneholder lesninger av blant annet H.C. Andersen, Olaf Bull, Hans Børli, Paul Celan, Alexander Kielland, Jonas Lie, Tor Ulven og Tarjei Vesaas. Forholdet mellom snø og modernitet belyses fra et dobbeltperspektiv. Søkelyset rettes på individets stilling og selvforståelse i moderniseringsprosessen, men også på estetiske spørsmål som reiser seg når det diktes om snø. Snøen lager en hvit flate, den «overskriver» jorden og spiller på denne måten en amimetisk poetikk i hendene. Snø kan sies å være en pådriver av en moderne estetisk posisjon som ikke tar språkets referensielle side for gitt.

    Description: The flow of literature from Sweden to France is unlike anything else. Canonized authors such as August Strindberg and Selma Lagerlöf have been surprisingly successful in translating into French. The same applies to later high-prestige literature by Torgny Lindgren and P O Enquist. French publishers were also among the first to discover the Swedish detective story writers. The rights to Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy were bought by a French publisher before the novels began to be published in Swedish. Children's literature, on the other hand, perhaps Sweden's foremost contribution to world literature, had a late breakthrough in the French book market. This also applies to Astrid Lindgren, the incomparably most successful of all authors translated from Swedish. Why did Swedish fiction receive this particular reception in France? This book describes how Swedish literature has been translated into French, with a special focus on the period after 1945. During this period, the number of editions of Swedish fiction in French has increased tenfold. Which translators, publishers and other actors have contributed to this development? How have they reasoned and acted to promote the interests of Swedish literature? What types of literature and authorship have been particularly successful? These questions are answered on the basis of comprehensive statistics based on the latest bibliographic lists. The book also discusses the theoretical conditions for this type of study. The leading researchers in world literature research - Pascale Casanova, David Damrosch and Franco Moretti - are related to a literary sociological study of the book's communities.

    Description: This book is about the historical sciences' way of producing knowledge by contextualizing. It is aimed primarily at students and researchers in the humanities disciplines who work with historical perspectives. The book's ambition is to bring the reader into the actual making and show how contextualisation is an important element in historical studies at all levels. The book thus hopes to stimulate increased reflection and discussion about how we proceed when we interpret, create or reinterpret historical, cultural and social contexts. The book firstly provides an introduction to what contextualization can be and do when we encounter the past in the form of texts, images or artifacts. From the very first day at the university, students in historical disciplines end up in such meetings. Therefore, the first four chapters of the book are primarily aimed at students in the introductory semesters. What does it really mean to analyze, synthesize, contextualize or criticize - and how do the ways of working with the past relate to each other? And further, what historical times are we working with: do we read source material from our own horizons or from those of the historical actors? Is the source material part of a long story or a short one? And who decides the answer to such questions? Secondly, the book provides an in-depth discussion of the role of contextualisation when we create new historical knowledge. The book's later chapters ask questions about how contextualisation relates to historical theory and method, and sheds light on the activity of creating, arguing for, and reconsidering the contexts that give meaning and significance to historical source material. The most central lesson the book wants to convey is that contextualization is an ongoing activity. Human horizons of understanding are constantly moving in step with contemporary knowledge interests. There will always be new ways of understanding historical expressions, and that is one reason why historical studies form an important part of society's common knowledge base.

    Description: This issue of Skriftkultur stems from our desire to honor our good colleague Geir Hjorthol with a festschrift on the occasion of his 70th birthday. As the recipient is a professor of literature and also interested in literary culture studies more generally, we have titled the issue Norwegian Nynorsk contemporary literature and written culture. Geir Hjorthol is himself responsible for the first article, in which he focuses on the role of music within Jon Fosses' novel, Septologien (2019–2022). This article became no less relevant when, a few weeks prior to completion of the issue, Fosse received the Nobel Prize in Literature 2023, the first Norwegian Nynorsk author in the prize’s history. In the second article, Jan Inge Sørbø questions whether reading literature may be stuck in a critical rut, where one is constantly occupied with revealing something hidden in the text. The four subsequent articles explore various recent Norwegian Nynorsk novels or authorships. In the first of these, Elin Stengrundet reflects on how Erlend Skjetne's young adult novel Eit anna blikk (2021) connects to modern migration literature and the Norwegian Nynorsk literary tradition, while Nora Simonhjell's article sheds new light on the inner coherence in the authorship of Olaug Nilssen. Marit Brekke and Wenke Mork Rogne present a post-humanistic reading of the Is-slottet (1963) by Tarjei Vesaas, while Beatrice G. Reed examines the precence of nature in Norwegian Nynorsk picture books for children in our time by taking a closer look at 13 prize-winning Norwegian Nynorsk picture books published up until the year 2000. Non-fiction and the topic of translation are covered by the next two articles. Brage Egil Herlofsen discusses the relationship between Norwegian Nynorsk literary culture and the essay genre, based on two books from the Norsk røyndom-series published by Samlaget (2018), while Marie Nedregotten Sørbø analyzes translations of Jane Austen from English to Norwegian nynorsk in light of literary cultural and hermeneutical perspectives. In the last article, Stian Hårstad shows how the language culture of our time places emphasis on increased pluralization, not least through the rise of digital technology, which facilitates new forms of interaction via writing, before discussing possible consequences this may have for written culture in general, and for studies of written cultures.
    Description: Bakgrunnen for dette nummeret av Skriftkultur var at vi ville heidre vår gode kollega og fagfelle Geir Hjorthol med eit festskrift i høve hans 70-årsdag. Sidan festskriftmottakaren er litteraturprofessor og dessutan er interessert i skriftkulturstudiar meir generelt, valde vi å gje festskriftet tittelen Nynorsk samtidslitteratur og skriftkultur. Geir Hjorthol står sjølv for den første artikkelen om Jon Fosses Septologien (2019–2022), og her rettar han søkjelyset mot forholdet til musikk i romanen. Denne artikkelen blei ikkje mindre aktuell då det nokre veker før festskriftet var ferdig, blei klart at Fosse fekk Nobelprisen i litteratur 2023, som den første nynorskforfattaren nokosinne. I den andre artikkelen stiller Jan Inge Sørbø spørsmål om lesing av litteratur kan ha køyrt seg fast i eit kritisk spor der ein heile tida er oppteken av å avsløre noko som er skjult i teksten. Deretter følgjer fire artiklar som tek føre seg ulike nyare nynorske romanar eller forfattarskapar. Brage Egil Herlofsen drøftar forholdet mellom nynorsk skriftkultur og essaysjangeren med utgangspunkt i to bøker frå Norsk røyndom-serien til Samlaget (2018), medan Marie Nedregotten Sørbø analyserer omsetjingar av Jane Austen frå engelsk til norsk i lys av skriftkulturelle og hermeneutiske perspektiv. I den siste artikkelen viser Stian Hårstad korleis vår tids språkkultur legg vekt på auka pluralisering og folkeleggjering, ikkje minst gjennom framveksten av digital teknologi som legg til rette for nye former for skriftbasert samhandling, før han drøftar kva for konsekvensar dette kan ha for skriftlegheita og for skriftkulturforskinga.

    Description: "By invoking Flora Nwapa, this monograph draws attention to Nigerian women writers in world literature, with an emphasis on femininity and spirituality. Flora Nwapa’s Efuru (1966) was the first internationally published novel in English by a female African writer. With the establishment of Tana Press in 1977, Flora Nwapa also became the first female publisher in Africa. Although Flora Nwapa has been recognized as the ‘mother of modern African literature’, she is not sufficiently acknowledged in world literary canons or world literature studies, which is something this monograph aspires to redress, with the help of earlier studies, especially Nigerian scholarship. Drawing on the Efuru@50 celebration in Nigeria in 2016, this book explores the revival of Flora Nwapa’s fame as the pioneer of African women’s literature. Using an ethnographic rather than biographical approach, it captures Flora Nwapa’s literary practice in the context of the Nigerian literary scene and its interlinkages with world literature. The ethnographic portrayal of Flora Nwapa is complemented with an exposé of a select number of contemporary Nigerian women writers, based on interviews during fieldwork in Nigeria. The book uses concepts like creolized aesthetics and womanist worldmaking to advance scholarly understandings of world literature, which is conceived here as a pluriverse of aesthetic worlds. Exploring experimental ethnographic writing, the book combines the genres of creative non-fiction, descriptive ethnography and scholarly analysis, in an effort to make the text more accessible to academic as well as non-academic readers. Through travel notes the experience of fieldwork is shared in a candid manner. Detailed ethnography from the Efuru@50 literary festival is presented to show the expansion of Flora Nwapa’s fame. In-depth analyses of Flora Nwapa’s literary works and the cultural context of her literary practice cover a wide range of themes, from feminine storytelling and children’s literature, to publishing and digitalization. The theoretical discussion draws on anthropological, literary and African womanist theory to contextualize and explore the central themes of femininity and spirituality in world literature. Inspired by the social change perspective of African womanism and critical decolonial theory, the book makes a contribution to current efforts to explore a more socially just and environmentally sustainable world of many worlds. Paying close attention to gender complementarity and sacred engagements in Flora Nwapa’s literary worldmaking, it shows how world literature can help us create other possible worlds of human, spiritual and environmental coexistence."

    Description: "Placing itself within the burgeoning field of world literary studies, the organising principle of this book is that of an open-ended dynamic, namely the cosmopolitan-vernacular exchange. As an adaptable comparative fulcrum for literary studies, the notion of the cosmopolitan-vernacular exchange accommodates also highly localised literatures. In this way, it redresses what has repeatedly been identified as a weakness of the world literature paradigm, namely the one-sided focus on literature that accumulates global prestige or makes it on the Euro-American book market. How has the vernacular been defined historically? How is it inflected by gender? How are the poles of the vernacular and the cosmopolitan distributed spatially or stylistically in literary narratives? How are cosmopolitan domains of literature incorporated in local literary communities? What are the effects of translation on the encoding of vernacular and cosmopolitan values? Ranging across a dozen languages and literature from five continents, these are some of the questions that the contributions attempt to address."
