Description: Among the literature aimed at students of art science and other image-interpreting sciences are a number of texts that deal with theories and theoretical concepts. However, what is largely missing, and which students often call for, are texts in Swedish that show how theories and concepts can be applied in concrete interpretation situations. The series Theoretical applications in art science aims to fill that gap, with the book Materiality being the fourth in the series. The book introduces and activates a concept that in recent decades has come to take an increasingly important place in humanistic research. Art scholars - but also archaeologists, anthropologists, literary scholars, ethnologists and other humanistic researchers - are increasingly interested in the material conditions for, and the manifestations of, people's social and cultural life and exchange. But despite its topicality in today's scientific conversation, the concept of materiality can seem elusive and elusive. It moves all the way from the most tangible analyzes of the material components of a cultural artefact, to the somewhat impenetrable theorizations of objectivity, agents and networks that are usually sorted under the label ""new materialism"". However, the book Materialitet gives concrete examples of how the concept of materiality can open up interpretations of important layers of meaning in works of art and other cultural artifacts. After the initial introduction where different perspectives and conceptualisations of materiality are discussed, six researchers each do their own analysis based on their subject area. The chapters are based on new research and are written specifically for this book. The different chapters together show the multifaceted nature of the concept of materiality, but do not lock it down to a definition, but open the eyes to a number of different interpretive paths.

Vsebina je v vseh razporejena v enotnem zaporedju poglavij o pokrajinskih značilnostih, predzgodovini, zgodovini, narodopisju, glasbi, književnosti, arhitekturi, slikarstvu in kiparstvu, obrti in gospodarskem življenju.

Description: Cultural heritage is not just something from the past, but always also reflects contemporary needs and desires. In the Traces of the Cold War describes the making of a diverse and innovative Swedish military heritage. The book shows how memories and material remains from a period characterized by fear and geopolitical tensions are infused with new meanings when bunkers, decommissioned military facilities and technology are transformed into luxury housing, attractive tourist destinations and museum exhibitions. Through field-visits to military heritage sites across Sweden, the authors examine what material objects, narratives and emotions that today represent the Cold War. These examinations show how military structures and equipment from a time associated with threat and danger become captivating elements of the cultural heritage, while also communicating specific ideas regarding security and protection. In the Traces of the Cold War takes a novel approach to cultural heritage by relating collective memory-making to security policy. Based on theoretical perspectives from critical heritage studies (CHS) and feminist international relations (IR), the analysis focuses on constructions of national belonging and underlines the role of gender and sexuality in narrations of security and protection. In a democracy, the subject of military violence must always be a matter of ethical and political conversations. Setting out from this assumption, the authors critically discuss how Cold War heritagisation produces militarization as “natural” and necessary. The book invites reflection on how history is written as well as on what the requirements are for a safe and secure society. In the Traces of the Cold War presents the results from an interdisciplinary research project. The authors are all researchers at Stockholm University and have written the book together.

Description: Quasi-literature, chronicling and occasional writings are new terms~in the vertical classification of literary culture they define literary phenomena in between literary folklore and literature. The introduction chapter of the book ('Quasi-literature, Chronicling and occasional Writings in Theory and Practice') presents each ot the three mentioned (conditionally aestethic) categories in theoretical terms: based on terminology development, definition, form and subject. This is followed by empirical examples vhere both the diachronous and synchronous aspects of analysis are applied: place, education, occupation, world and aesthetic view, disadvantaged life (disabled and blind persons)

Description: Over the last decades, several different renewal movements within Christianity have had a strong impact on Melanesian societies and cultures. Even though these societies have shown a great desire for total transformation, they have in their transformative acts come across an insurmountable obstacle: a firm bond between their way of being and places, where their being has been realised. The Ambonwari people of the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea have faced the same problem since the Catholic charismatic movement reached the village in December 1994. Their cosmology and social organization have always been inseparable from their paths (journeys of ancestors, marriages, exchanges, adoptions) and places (old and new villages, fishing and hunting places, taboo places), and their historicity was primarily perceived and defined in terms of individual and group relations to particular named locations in tropical rainforest. As times are tightly intertwined with places, temporalities in the landscape are also possessed, seen and held by individuals and groups. The book ('Places and Times in a New Guinean Landscape') argues that it is this multiplicity of emplaced and embodied temporalities that troubles them most in their ongoing attempts to modify their life-world.
Description: Različna prenovitvena gibanja v krščanstvu so v zadnjih desetletjih močno vplivala na melanezijske družbe in kulture.

Description: The kitchen is the core~it is the heart of the home. A major part of our daily routine takes place in the kitchen. In addition to being a place for food preparation, the kitchen also defines our lifestyle and social status. In the 20th century, the kitchen, its practices and representations were changing. The form, use and purpose of the kitchen were connected to general and specific (micro-)regional economic, social, demographic, cultural and ideological circumstances, and after all also socio-economic conditions of the household. This book ('From the main place to dwell to a working cell: Development of the kitchen in the Vipava Valley') presents the formal development of the kitchen in the Vipava Valley in the 20th century regarding the changes in kitchen practices and the image of the kitchen.
Description: Kuhinja je središče, je srce doma.

Description: When Anna Johanna Grill travelled from Sweden to England in 1788, she was impressed by the vast array of consumer goods in shops. In her travel diary, she writes how the shopkeepers displayed goods in myriad of ways that fooled people into shopping. How did shops look like in Anna Johanna Grill’s hometown Stockholm in the eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century? Were there distinctive shopping streets? Who sold goods, who shopped them and what goods were available? How were goods displayed in shops and marketed? How households act in organising their purchases and consumption? From a microhistorical case studies, this richly illustrated anthology widens the perspective to social, economic and cultural practices in everyday urban life. The chapters demonstrate how shopping streets and shops with their range of silk fabrics, accessories, fashion plates, blacksmithing, wigs and hair pomades not only met the desires of consumers, but also enabled dreams of novel identities and social accession for themselves and their families.

Description: This text about the ambivalence of fieldwork, rituals, actors, and stories thematizes the relationship between the researcher and his informants and interlocutors (usually also the performers of a cultural practice), and it reveals dynamic processes at the same time. In the chapter “Texts and Realities” the author uses the carnival tradition known as škoromatija to decode a palimpsest structure and syncretic understanding of reality. The second chapter focuses on the production of local identity: a motif that is characteristic for today’s production of ritual practices and cultural heritage. The chapter “Illusions of Harmony” thematizes discourse on the relationship between the views and conceptions of the researcher and performer, whereby the author especially problematizes the search for and repeated discovery of golden eras. “The Timing of Verbalization” is a narrative about time as one of the most important categories of structuring a narrative. The researcher problematizes the perception of time and the horizon, compares different timing of the past for himself and his interlocutor, and teases out caesurae in the structuring of time. In the last and partly self-ethnographic chapter on the ambivalence of fieldwork, the writer focuses on stories of “capturing” the reality, and stories about changing the approach to fieldwork and about the changed configurations of relations among actors.
Description: Besedilo o ambivalencah terena, o ritualih, akterjih in pripovedi tematizira razmerje med raziskovalcem in njegovim informatorjem, sogovornikom, navadno tudi izvajalcem kulturne prakse, in hkrati odkriva dinamične procese. V poglavju Besedila in resničnosti avtor na primeru pustovanja (škoromatije) razbira palimpsestne strukture in sinkretično dojemanje resničnosti.

Description: In the book Anti-Racisms and Anti-Racists. Realistic utopias, tensions and everyday experiences, 24 researchers explore how resistance to various forms of racism is pursued and embodied among groups of people who dream beyond racism in a variety of ways, often contradictory, rarely successful, but always stubborn and forward-looking. The anthology illustrates the breadth of anti-racism, but also analyses its problems and weaknesses. Inspired by anti-, post- and decolonial traditions, among others, together with social movement perspectives, the anthology challenges a static and essentialising approach found in research and policy that tends to emphasise the stability and immutability of inequality, even in the case of racism. In addition to a variety of concrete analyses and descriptions of historical and contemporary activism, the various authors also show the possibilities of anti-racism and can thus provide some hope, in these dark times, for those who want a society without racism. Academic co-ordinator is Mattias Gardell, Uppsala universitet.

Description: Two years after the first book “Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Word and Image: Slovenes 1, Styria, Porabje and Prekmurje, Carinthia” (2016) has been published, is now out also the second book: “Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Word and Image: Slovenes 2”, presenting Kranjska (Carniola) and Primorje (Coastal region). Both books make the whole picture of Slovenes as included in the monumental book series “Die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild” which was projected by the archeduke Rudolf and was published between 1884–1902. Translated are the chapters which discuss life, culture and economy of Slovenes living in Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Prevailing are the ethnographical descriptions of the regions, the presentation of inhabitants and their position in the context of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and other countries of that time. The authors are of different profiles and interests, and their studies are important sources for Slovenian culture and economy which was up till now too often overlooked.
Description: Prvemu delu Avstro-ogrske monarhije v besedi in podobi: Slovenci 1, Štajerska, Porabje in Prekmurje, Koroška (2016) sledi še drugi del prevodov poglavij, v katerih sta predstavljaeni Kranjska in Primorje. Prevedena poglavja podajajo pregledno podobo življenja, kulture in gospodarstva Slovencev v tistem času. Prevladujejo različni etnološki opisi regij in prebivalstva, postavljeni v politični in kulturnozgodovinski kontekst Avstro-Ogrske v drugi polovici 19. stoletja.

Description: The book ('Tradition in the Contemporary World. Janče: the Green Threshold of Ljubljana') deals with dimensions of tradition in modernity, as reflected in the half-urbanized environment on the northeastern outskirts of Ljubljana - at Janče with its surroundings. The author analyzes the concept of tradition, which is one of the core in ethnology and folklore studies, and presents its concretizations in the ethnographic field, especially its role in local festivals. She mainly focuses on peasant work and its ritual dimensions as well as on other types of heritage/tradition of rural environment. Heritage is not only positively valued by local inhabitants, but also represented in the idealistic form, thus creating rural idyll, attractive for tourists. Having a special value, it has become the means of invoking and preserving identifications with certain communities and the area itself, and is at the same time also used as an argument in general and sustainable development of the area.

Description: Divided as it is, philology is constantly improving through the emergence of new interdisciplinary sciences. One among them is ethnolinguistics. It has taken particularly firm roots in Slavic studies, especially with the Russian and Polish schools. While the diachronous researches of Nikita I. Tolstoy in Svetlana Tolstaya reach as far back as Slavic mythology, the Polish school, headed by Jerzy Bartmińsky, flirts with cognitive linguistics and is more interested, through its synchronous approach, in contemporary themes. The present monograph aims to evaluate the work carried out in this field to date and to raise awareness of the new interdisciplinary direction, which may link up the ethnologies and linguistics of different directions.

Description: Borovo gostüvanje, a wedding with a pine tree, is a Carnival tradition characteristic of the region of Prekmurje in northeast Slovenia~of the Porabje in Hungary and the area extending toward northeast Hungaria~and of Austrian Burgenland and Styria. The custom was traditionally held if there had not been a single wedding in the village during fášenk time (the period between Christmas and Shrovetide). In the present time, this is no longer relevant. The tradition is recreated in order to collect funds for village matters, particularly for the local fire brigade~to keep the tradition going~and to attract tourists. Elderly villagers say that the principal objective has always been to do something for the village and its development. This text focuses on the village of Predanovci, where the custom had been observed by this author in 2002. Yet the author did not limit herself merely to this event but analyzed previous ones as well~examined the ways in which the older generation of the villagers still remembered the custom from their younger days~their relation to village traditions~and their perspective on the importance of this custom in the past and at present.
Description: Borovo gostüvanje je svatba z borom, pustna šega, značilna za Prekmurje, za slovensko Porabje in širše območje na Madžarskem, na Gradiščanskem in avstrijskem Štajerskem.

Description: Besedna umetnost za svoje izražanje uporablja jezikovna sredstva.

Description: The book describes the role of singing and (folk) songs in the Gorizia Hills (Goriška brda) within the processes of shaping the political nation and facilitating national identification in the second half of the nineteenth century. In addition to the use of the Slovene language at school and church and defining Slovene as the language of common use in censuses, national activists encouraged inhabitants to express identification with the singing of Slovene “folk” songs. Therefore they promoted the performances of choirs and tried to sweep-out the singing of non-Slovene songs - especially Friulian and Italian. The singing outside the reading and singing societies was influenced by the way of life, which was strongly marked by the system of tenant farming. The book also presents the research of folk songs in the Gorizia Hills, with special emphasis on short songs with strong dialect features, which in everyday life of the inhabitants complemented the repertoire of folk and religious songs known in the wider Slovenian territory.
Description: Monografija Vi čuvarji ste obmejni osvetljuje dejavnike in procese, ki so v 19. stoletju vplivali na poudarjanje narodne identifikacije kmečkih prebivalcev Goriških brd. Narodni aktivisti so poleg rabe slovenskega jezika v šoli in cerkvi in opredeljevanja za slovenski pogovorni jezik na popisih posebej spodbujali Brice k izražanju identifikacije s petjem slovenskih »narodnih« pesmi. Zato so pospeševali delovanje pevskih zborov in skušali iztrebiti petje neslovenskih pesmi – predvsem furlanskih in italijanskih.

Description: Simply put, the modern Slovenian nation began as a cultural project in the age of Enlightenment. Its basic axis has been Standard Slovenian as one of Slavic languages. The book describes from where the speakers of the initial common Slavic language arrived at our place, as well as where and when Slavs came into being. Throughout the history of long ages the author observes the relationship between the speakers of the language, political power, and particularly the Church as an institution with a universal ideology which as such does not in any way encourage local identity. The book also recalls the millennial roots of Slovenian identity whose present state is not a logical consequence of the past, much less the beginning of self-evident future. The author knows that the final image of the past is always created by the reader themself, therefore using challenging illustrations he constantly encourages them to think. The author also does not expect the reader to agree with him, but would like them to find some causal connections of their own and thus recover the lost memory of who they are.

Description: The book contains 23 articles from various disciplines, reflecting Ložar’s intellectual work in Slovenia and in emigration. Rajko Ložar – an ethnologist, archeologist, art historian, literary, art, and music critic, museum worker, and publicist – was engaged in scholarly and professional work in Slovenia until the end of the Second World War. He lived and worked in Austrian Carinthia until the end of 1951 as a professor, collector, and researcher of ethnographic material, and then emigrated to the United States, where he was the director of the City Museum of Manitowoc, WI from 1956 until his retirement in 1969. His death there in 1985 marked the end of a variegated life and career. The articles join together the observations of scholars that have addressed Ložar and his work or were his successors, as well as those that knew him personally. Indirectly, through Ložar’s work, the articles discuss the history of the disciplines that he was connected with, and at the same time serve as narratives about the broader historical, social, and intellectual pulse of the time he worked in. The publication includes a bibliography of Ložar’s collected published and unpublished works.
Description: V knjigi so zbrane razprave, ki z večdisciplinarne perspektive govorijo o intelektualnem delovanju Rajka Ložarja v Sloveniji in izseljenstvu.

Description: This book ('Folkloristic Portraits from three Centuries. From baroque to modernism') preseints 18 profiled personalities from the Slovenian spiritual, cultural history and linguistics from 17th Century (J. V. Valvasor, J. Svetokriški, and 18th Century (M. Pohlin, U. Jarnik) up to most of them in the 19th Century (P. Danjko, A. M. Slomšek, M. Ravnikar-Poženčan, A. Murko, S. Vraz, E. Korytko, J. Trdina, M. Valjavec. V. Urbas, G. Krek, S. Škrabec, G. Križnik, S. Rutar) to K. Štrekelj. The personalities are illuminated from folkloristic view, following the prehistory this profession.

Description: The monograph Shranli smo jih v bančah ('We saved them in chests') aims to present Slovenian clothing terminology in the Canale Valley (Slo. Kanalska dolina). It is the result of research conducted in cooperation with the Planika Kanalska dolina Slovenian cultural centre between 2003–2007 and in 2014. It has been formatted as a trilingual (English-German-Italian) concordance dictionary in which the most common collocations are presented alongside clothing terminology. The dictionary includes 657 entries and is based on approximately 1,400 audio extracts from around 16 hours of recording of guided conversations with five informants from Valbruna (Slo. Ovčja vas), Camporosso (Slo. Žabnice) and Uggoviza (Slo. Ukve). The dictionary’s introduction, containing a presentation of the research conducted, the structure of the dictionary entries and a list of abbreviations and acronyms, is accompanied by a transcription of the dialect text Oblačila naših dedkov in babic (Our grandparents’ clothing) by the main informant, Maria Moschitz, together with some photographic material. To make searching through the dictionary easier for users with expertise in several or other languages as well, we have provided lists of entries in which dialect words can be searched against Standard Slovenian, Italian and German, as well as reverse index.

Začetna, slovensko-italijanska razdelka vsebujeta prepis narečnega besedila Oblačila naših dedkov in babic glavne informantke Marie Moschitz, obogaten s slikovnim gradivom, in slovarski uvod s predstavitvijo raziskave, prikazom sestave gesel ter seznamom kratic in krajšav. Slovar v celoti temelji na prepisih posnetkov narečnih besedil, urejenih v podatkovno zbirko. Lažje iskanje po slovarju (tudi več- in drugojezičnim uporabnikom) omogočajo knjižnoslovensko-narečni, italijansko-slovenskonarečni in nemško-slovenskonarečni seznam.

Description: The monograph illustrates the festive year of Slovenes in the Canale Valley from the perspective of current ritualistic practices (still in use today). The identifying elements of the Slovenian linguistic community are recognizable in the implementation of various (popular) religious practices by the local population. The author presents the rituals (with selected prayer formulas), described as an integral part of their life by Slovenian-speaking informants – all of whom are indigenous, native people of the Canale Valley – that was described, from the point of view of experts in the fields (e.g. Kuret 1989) as typical of the Slovenian community in general.
Description: Monografija prinaša pregled ljudskega obredja prebivalstva Kanalske doline, ki ga avtorica prepoznava kot pomemben identifikacijski element tamkajšnje slovenske jezikovne skupnosti.

Description: Monografija predstavlja odnos med umetnostno in ljudsko glasbeno ustvarjalnostjo.

Description: This monograph is about the ongoing, unstable reconstruction of spaces and places in the village of Dhërmi/Drimades of southern Albania. It is based on twelve months of anthropological field research in that village. Particular consideration is given to the process of reconfiguration and redefinition of the meanings that pertain to the village and its people. The monograph focuses on local peoples’ biographies, oral histories, rhetorical claims, and their everyday discourses, through which it is shown how the meanings of the village are reconstructed through interrelations of the locals with other people and places. The underlying theme is the continuity of movements and interrelations through which the local people of Dhërmi/Drimades recreate and reproduce the sense of locatedness of “their” village and themselves.
Description: Monografija se ukvarja z antropološkimi vprašanji nenehne in nestabilne rekonstrukcije prostora in kraja v vasi Dhërmi/Dimades v južni Albaniji.

Description: In this volume of studies, Animal: Moments of Affect, Moments of Pain, eight ethnologists apply a cultural perspective to people’s varied and complex relationships with other species. The contributions focus on wild animals, that is, those that are rarely found in the authors’ immediate vicinity. Based on ongoing research, the articles discuss themes such as conflicts and joys in the birdwatching world, charismatic animals in various exhibition contexts, children’s fears, morbid animal jokes and the ritual transformation of living animals into edible meat. The texts range from the tender, comical and cute to death and existential vulnerability. The book begins with the editors presenting an overview of how animals have been produced, noticed and studied in a mostly Nordic humanistic research context. Then the articles follow. Based on the idea of affective logic, Elin Lundquist follows the on-site monitoring of the bird hunting that takes place annually in Malta. Mattias Frihammar uses observations at a wilderness gallery with taxidermied animals to reflect on local identity. Lars Kaijser examines the ambivalent and conflicted portrayal of sharks in public aquariums. Sverker Hyltén-Cavallius writes about the death of extinct animals and how this is displayed in natural history museums. Susanne Nylund Skog examines birdwatchers’ stories as an expression of collecting and as a way of manifesting status. With lobster cartoons as a starting point, Simon Ekström shows how these depict both animal rights issues and human anxiety. Helena Hörnfeldt investigates animal fear and the diffuse boundary between humans and animals. Proceeding from different depictions of slaughter and the preparation of meat, Michelle Zethson problematizes how some animals are made edible. The volume ends with an epilogue by the editors commenting on the findings.

Description: E-knjiga Bedenice.
