Description: Molnik is a hill in the hinterland of Ljubljana in central Slovenia that has been known as an archaeological site for quite some time. Systematic investigations ensued in the 1980s and 1990s, led by Ivan Puš, then curator in the Mestni muzej Ljubljana. They revealed ramparts and habitation terraces on the summit of the hill, as well as flat and tumulus graves on five locations around the summit that date to the Early Iron Age and some finds from later periods.

Description: The present study deals with the question of the organization of the stonemasonry production of funerary monuments in the interior of the former Roman province of Dalmatia. The aim of the research was to identify a model of stonemasonry production that originated in a mountainous and difficult to traverse area, where the possibilities of water transport of stone material are minimal. The author started from the assumption that production centres formed in some geographical areas during Roman rule, using local limestone sources for their operation. The study includes funerary monuments discovered in present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina and in the western part of Serbia and Montenegro. By combining the methods of macroscopic petrographic analysis of the stone material and typological and spatial analysis, the existence of several production centres was proven. The results of the analyses indicate a very likely that they exploited the local limestone resources. Epigraphic data also made it possible to define their chronological aspect.

Description: Among the literature aimed at students of art science and other image-interpreting sciences are a number of texts that deal with theories and theoretical concepts. However, what is largely missing, and which students often call for, are texts in Swedish that show how theories and concepts can be applied in concrete interpretation situations. The series Theoretical applications in art science aims to fill that gap, with the book Materiality being the fourth in the series. The book introduces and activates a concept that in recent decades has come to take an increasingly important place in humanistic research. Art scholars - but also archaeologists, anthropologists, literary scholars, ethnologists and other humanistic researchers - are increasingly interested in the material conditions for, and the manifestations of, people's social and cultural life and exchange. But despite its topicality in today's scientific conversation, the concept of materiality can seem elusive and elusive. It moves all the way from the most tangible analyzes of the material components of a cultural artefact, to the somewhat impenetrable theorizations of objectivity, agents and networks that are usually sorted under the label ""new materialism"". However, the book Materialitet gives concrete examples of how the concept of materiality can open up interpretations of important layers of meaning in works of art and other cultural artifacts. After the initial introduction where different perspectives and conceptualisations of materiality are discussed, six researchers each do their own analysis based on their subject area. The chapters are based on new research and are written specifically for this book. The different chapters together show the multifaceted nature of the concept of materiality, but do not lock it down to a definition, but open the eyes to a number of different interpretive paths.

Description: The routes between the north Adriatic and the Apennine peninsula on the west and the Balkans and the central Danubian plains on the east ran across Razdrto ever since ancient times. In the late prehistory and in the early Roman era the pass of Razdrto was known under the name of Ocra as was the mountain above it.Several Bronze age sites were discovered in the area of the Razdrto pass. The posts in the Razdrto area from the end of the 2nd and first half of the 1st century BC (Mandrga, Preval) differ from the other sites along the east Alpine routes, as they were not spatially linked to any of the existing indigenous settlements and did not show any contact with the surroundings even with their small objects. Most of the remains can be explained as traces of Roman passengers who stopped at Razdrto for a shorter period of time and not as remnants of a significant Roman settlement.A gravel covered road was constructed across the Razdrto pass in the second half of the 1st century BC or in the Augustan period. A roadside building was erected in the middle or late Augustan period and demolished in the mid 1st century AD.The shift of transit from Razdrto to Hrušica (Ad Pirum) took place in the 1st century AD. Post 1st century AD written sources no longer mention the road across Ocra, and the archaeological remains dating after the mid 1st century AD are extremely modest at Razdrto.
Description: Delo prinaša temeljno objavo in analizo arheoloških najdišč, ki so bila na območju Razdrtega odkrita in raziskana ob gradnji avtoceste leta 1989. Zaključek pa predstavlja rimske poti čez jugovzhodne Alpe in širši pomen arheoloških najdišč na Razdrtem.

Description: The in depth archaeological research of High Medieval castle presented in this book is unique in Slovenia and among just few in this part of Central Europe. The book is based on analysis of the archaeological data gathered in more than a decade of archaeological excavations in 1980s and 1990s.In the introductory chapter written sources and interpretative models are presented. The analysis of pictorial representations follows. The focus of the research is on the archaeological sources, though. Above all the analysis of the small finds, stratigraphy and spatial analysis of the castle itself and the castle in the landscape should be mentioned.
V začetnem delu so predstavljeni pisni viri in interpretativni modeli v zvezi z nastankom in pomenom gradu. Sledi prikaz maloštevilnih, a nikakor ne nepomembnih slikovnih virov. Glavnino študije predstavljajo arheološki viri, predvsem priročniško uporabna tipokronološka analiza artefaktov, stratigrafija najdišča in prostorska analiza gradu.

Description: Most na Soči ranks among the most prominent prehistoric sites in Europe. It is mainly known for the extensive cemetery from the Early Iron Age, which was first investigated in the late 19th century and revealed over 6000 burials. The rapid growth of the modern village of Most na Soči again led to large-scale archaeological excavations in the 1970s. These were conducted in the span of eleven years and unearthed one of the most significant Iron Age settlements in Slovenia and the wider south-eastern Alpine region.
Description: Most na Soči sodi med najpomembnejša prazgodovinska najdišča Evrope.

Description: This popular-science publication describes the pile-dwellings of the Ljubljansko barje, which were created in the first half of the 5th millennium BC. However, when the lake was completely overgrown with swamps and marshes (at the latest around the middle of the 2nd millennium), the construction of such settlements stopped. From then on, new settlements were built on the outskirts of the lake banks, where the fields were previously. There they also farmed livestock such as cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. They were accompanied by dogs. Hunting and fishing were also important economic activities~they harvested fruits in the forests. They made pottery vessels. Findings of copper and metallurgical articles, however, prove that at least since the 4th millennium BC they were engaged in copper metallurgy. Logboats were used to navigate the lake and in the second half of the 4th millennium even for routes outside the Ljubljansko barje. In short, they were very resourceful and were able to adapt well to the environment in which they lived.Only in Slovenian
Spremljali so jih psi. Pomembni gospodarski dejavnosti sta bili tudi lov in ribolov. V skoraj nedotaknjeni pokrajini so nabirali gozdne sadeže. Izdelovali so keramične posode.

Description: If the term “prehistory” is used for the time and space not “seen” by written records, then there are “prehistoric” areas also in the time, which is generally considered “history”. In this sense, there are still vast areas of Europe in the early medieval period, where the state of written records can be described as “prehistoric”. It appears to be true especially for the regions settled by the Slavs. Among them is the area of the present-day Slovenia, where Bled lies. The latter does not “enter the history” before 1004.

Vsebina je v vseh razporejena v enotnem zaporedju poglavij o pokrajinskih značilnostih, predzgodovini, zgodovini, narodopisju, glasbi, književnosti, arhitekturi, slikarstvu in kiparstvu, obrti in gospodarskem življenju.

Description: Cultural heritage is not just something from the past, but always also reflects contemporary needs and desires. In the Traces of the Cold War describes the making of a diverse and innovative Swedish military heritage. The book shows how memories and material remains from a period characterized by fear and geopolitical tensions are infused with new meanings when bunkers, decommissioned military facilities and technology are transformed into luxury housing, attractive tourist destinations and museum exhibitions. Through field-visits to military heritage sites across Sweden, the authors examine what material objects, narratives and emotions that today represent the Cold War. These examinations show how military structures and equipment from a time associated with threat and danger become captivating elements of the cultural heritage, while also communicating specific ideas regarding security and protection. In the Traces of the Cold War takes a novel approach to cultural heritage by relating collective memory-making to security policy. Based on theoretical perspectives from critical heritage studies (CHS) and feminist international relations (IR), the analysis focuses on constructions of national belonging and underlines the role of gender and sexuality in narrations of security and protection. In a democracy, the subject of military violence must always be a matter of ethical and political conversations. Setting out from this assumption, the authors critically discuss how Cold War heritagisation produces militarization as “natural” and necessary. The book invites reflection on how history is written as well as on what the requirements are for a safe and secure society. In the Traces of the Cold War presents the results from an interdisciplinary research project. The authors are all researchers at Stockholm University and have written the book together.

Description: Pristava in Bled belongs among those archaeological sites which, in the extent and inter-connectedness of the information they provide, represent a pattern in which numerous general processes are revealed. In solving the puzzle of Pristava, we are also to a great extent settling altogether the generally unresolved problems of the Eastern Alps in the Early Middle Ages.Firstly, a taphonomic analysis of the settlement is presented. This is followed by a classification of the earthenware and its absolute dating. In order to do this, a completely new dating procedure was developed. Although by no means simple, it has nevertheless proved to be both applicable and successful. It is now generally available and of assistance to all.

Description: Quasi-literature, chronicling and occasional writings are new terms~in the vertical classification of literary culture they define literary phenomena in between literary folklore and literature. The introduction chapter of the book ('Quasi-literature, Chronicling and occasional Writings in Theory and Practice') presents each ot the three mentioned (conditionally aestethic) categories in theoretical terms: based on terminology development, definition, form and subject. This is followed by empirical examples vhere both the diachronous and synchronous aspects of analysis are applied: place, education, occupation, world and aesthetic view, disadvantaged life (disabled and blind persons)

Description: Over the last decades, several different renewal movements within Christianity have had a strong impact on Melanesian societies and cultures. Even though these societies have shown a great desire for total transformation, they have in their transformative acts come across an insurmountable obstacle: a firm bond between their way of being and places, where their being has been realised. The Ambonwari people of the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea have faced the same problem since the Catholic charismatic movement reached the village in December 1994. Their cosmology and social organization have always been inseparable from their paths (journeys of ancestors, marriages, exchanges, adoptions) and places (old and new villages, fishing and hunting places, taboo places), and their historicity was primarily perceived and defined in terms of individual and group relations to particular named locations in tropical rainforest. As times are tightly intertwined with places, temporalities in the landscape are also possessed, seen and held by individuals and groups. The book ('Places and Times in a New Guinean Landscape') argues that it is this multiplicity of emplaced and embodied temporalities that troubles them most in their ongoing attempts to modify their life-world.
Description: Različna prenovitvena gibanja v krščanstvu so v zadnjih desetletjih močno vplivala na melanezijske družbe in kulture.

Description: The monograph presents the results of two-year excavations (1982 and 1983) on the late-antique fortified hilltop settlement Korinjski hrib above Veliki Korini in Suha Krajina, where the remains of five defence towers and an early Christian church were explored. The settlement was initially recognized as a military post and as such represented an exception in the Eastern Alpine area. Such a definition raised some doubts and dilemmas. These dilemmas are presented - in addition to geographical outline and research history - in the Introduction. The following set presents - in text and with abundant graphic material – field reports of excavations of towers, the church, and a small cemetery. All groups of finds (non-pottery, pottery and coins) and anthropological and archaeological studies are also presented. An extensive chapter is devoted to the interpretation of architectural remains (towers, church, the fort as a whole). The conclusion also discusses the prehistoric settlement, and the results of structural survey of the ruins of church of St George just below the fort.
Description: V monografiji so predstavljeni rezultati dveletnih izkopavanj (1982 in 1983) na utrjeni poznoantični višinski naselbini Korinjski hrib nad Velikim Korinjem v Suhi Krajini, kjer so bili raziskani ostanki petih obrambnih stolpov in zgodnjekrščanske cerkve. Omenjene dileme so − poleg geografskega orisa in zgodovine raziskav − predstavljene v uvodnem delu. Sledi obsežen sklop, ki v tekstu in z bogatim slikovnim gradivom predstavi terenske izvide izkopavanj stolpov, cerkve in pripadajočega manjšega grobišča.

Description: Kučar near Podzemelj represents one of the most significant archaeological sites not only in Slovenia but also in the wider southeastern alpine region. It is an extensive complex composed of an Iron Age and Late Roman settlement upon the hill Kučar, as well as numerous necropoli that are distributed throughout the villages of Podzemelj, Zemelj, Škrilje and Grm. The site is well-known all over the world for its elaborate material finds originating from the cemeteries there. The book presents the results from rescue excavations that were carried out between the years 1975 and 1979 on the northern top of Kučar by the Institute for Archaeology. Substantial remains of a settlement dating to the Early and Late Iron Ages (8th –1st centuries BC) were excavated, as well as the even more surprising discovery of an Early Christian building complex (5th century AD) incorporating two churches, a baptistery and a large building with an enclosing wall that was reinforced with two towers. This publication concerning the settlement on Kučar near Podzemelj is the third monograph regarding this site. The first two publications presented the material finds from the Iron Age necropolis, preserved at the National Museum in Ljubljana and at the Museum of Natural History in Vienna. This third publication includes a contribution by Metka Culiberg and Alojz Šercelj on the investigations of organic remains from Kučar.

Description: The kitchen is the core~it is the heart of the home. A major part of our daily routine takes place in the kitchen. In addition to being a place for food preparation, the kitchen also defines our lifestyle and social status. In the 20th century, the kitchen, its practices and representations were changing. The form, use and purpose of the kitchen were connected to general and specific (micro-)regional economic, social, demographic, cultural and ideological circumstances, and after all also socio-economic conditions of the household. This book ('From the main place to dwell to a working cell: Development of the kitchen in the Vipava Valley') presents the formal development of the kitchen in the Vipava Valley in the 20th century regarding the changes in kitchen practices and the image of the kitchen.

Description: All finds from the field investigations at Tonovcov grad near Kobarid are published in the second volume. An exceptional number of finds represents the base for studies of the material culture in Late Antiquity (metallic finds, glass finds, pottery finds), as well as for the others archaeological (anthropological and zoological) remains.
Description: V drugi knjigi o Tonovcovem gradu so seznami in študije vsega najdenega gradiva, to je drobnih predmetov vsakdanje rabe, keramičnih in steklenih posod, novcev in človeških in živalskih kostnih ostankov.

Description: When Anna Johanna Grill travelled from Sweden to England in 1788, she was impressed by the vast array of consumer goods in shops. In her travel diary, she writes how the shopkeepers displayed goods in myriad of ways that fooled people into shopping. How did shops look like in Anna Johanna Grill’s hometown Stockholm in the eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century? Were there distinctive shopping streets? Who sold goods, who shopped them and what goods were available? How were goods displayed in shops and marketed? How households act in organising their purchases and consumption? From a microhistorical case studies, this richly illustrated anthology widens the perspective to social, economic and cultural practices in everyday urban life. The chapters demonstrate how shopping streets and shops with their range of silk fabrics, accessories, fashion plates, blacksmithing, wigs and hair pomades not only met the desires of consumers, but also enabled dreams of novel identities and social accession for themselves and their families.

Description: This text about the ambivalence of fieldwork, rituals, actors, and stories thematizes the relationship between the researcher and his informants and interlocutors (usually also the performers of a cultural practice), and it reveals dynamic processes at the same time. In the chapter “Texts and Realities” the author uses the carnival tradition known as škoromatija to decode a palimpsest structure and syncretic understanding of reality. The second chapter focuses on the production of local identity: a motif that is characteristic for today’s production of ritual practices and cultural heritage. The chapter “Illusions of Harmony” thematizes discourse on the relationship between the views and conceptions of the researcher and performer, whereby the author especially problematizes the search for and repeated discovery of golden eras. “The Timing of Verbalization” is a narrative about time as one of the most important categories of structuring a narrative. The researcher problematizes the perception of time and the horizon, compares different timing of the past for himself and his interlocutor, and teases out caesurae in the structuring of time. In the last and partly self-ethnographic chapter on the ambivalence of fieldwork, the writer focuses on stories of “capturing” the reality, and stories about changing the approach to fieldwork and about the changed configurations of relations among actors.
Description: Besedilo o ambivalencah terena, o ritualih, akterjih in pripovedi tematizira razmerje med raziskovalcem in njegovim informatorjem, sogovornikom, navadno tudi izvajalcem kulturne prakse, in hkrati odkriva dinamične procese. V poglavju Besedila in resničnosti avtor na primeru pustovanja (škoromatije) razbira palimpsestne strukture in sinkretično dojemanje resničnosti.

Description: In the book Anti-Racisms and Anti-Racists. Realistic utopias, tensions and everyday experiences, 24 researchers explore how resistance to various forms of racism is pursued and embodied among groups of people who dream beyond racism in a variety of ways, often contradictory, rarely successful, but always stubborn and forward-looking. The anthology illustrates the breadth of anti-racism, but also analyses its problems and weaknesses. Inspired by anti-, post- and decolonial traditions, among others, together with social movement perspectives, the anthology challenges a static and essentialising approach found in research and policy that tends to emphasise the stability and immutability of inequality, even in the case of racism. In addition to a variety of concrete analyses and descriptions of historical and contemporary activism, the various authors also show the possibilities of anti-racism and can thus provide some hope, in these dark times, for those who want a society without racism. Academic co-ordinator is Mattias Gardell, Uppsala universitet.

Description: The hill of Panorama in Ptuj is one of the most important areas of Roman Poetovio. Chance finds and small-scale excavations in the past centuries have revealed the existence of significant archaeological remains that included buildings with numerous rooms and objects dedicated to a variety of deities, the remains of a sanctuary dedicated to the Nutrices, an Early Christian church, an aqueduct and a cemetery. The geophysical investigations have revealed the urban design with a rectilinear grid of streets and building plots. The first few chapters of the book present the history of archaeological research on Panorama, the analytical approaches and the geophysical investigations with the methods employed and the final results. The main chapters correlate the archaeological data of differing quality and nature (chance finds, rescue excavations, old and modern archaeological investigations, geophysical surveys) and locate them with a series of plans. The comprehensive overview is supported by a Catalogue of stone monuments that presents the basic data, descriptions, bibliography, commentary and photographs of the stone objects recovered on Panorama.
Description: Na griču Panorama na Ptuju, kjer leži eden pomembnejših predelov antičnega mesta Poetovio, so geofizikalne raziskave razkrile urbanistično zasnovo s potekom ulic in pravokotnimi stavbnimi parcelami. Uvodna poglavja prinašajo zgodovino arheoloških raziskav, izhodišča analize in potek geofizikalnih raziskav z uporabljenimi metodami ter glavnimi rezultati. V osrednjih poglavjih smo povezali arheološke podatke različne kakovosti (naključne najdbe, zaščitna izkopavanja, stara in moderna arheološka raziskovanja, geofizikalne preglede) in jih umestili v prostor s pomočjo številnih načrtov. Description: The monograph, the first regarding the Mesolithic in Slovenia, presents a discussion of two exceptionally rich sites in the Karst in western Slovenia: Viktorjev spodmol and Mala Triglavca. Viktorjev spodmol is a newly discovered site, where test excavation have only been done, while research is underway at Mala Triglavca already a while. The compilation primarily presents a detailed review of Viktorjev spodmol. Individual chapters address the topic of microlithic tools attributed to the Sauveterrien-Castelovien complex, their typology and relations with other sites from this complex, and with a special emphasis on the chronology and chronological correlations between Mesolithic sites in northern Italy, including the Trieste karst, and western Slovenia. The remaining chapters systematically present rare vegetal remains, the exceptionally rich collections of mollusc's fauna, ectothermic vertebrates and small mammals as well as the remains of large mammals.Mala Triglavca is equally profuse, although it is discussed only summarily in this monograph, and with an emphasis on Mesolithic artefacts. From among these finds, the numerous trapezes are particularly noteworthy, and from among the more rare finds at least the bone whistle and flute. Also noteworthy are the rare human remains discovered at both sites.
Description: V zborniku, prvem s področja mezolitika v Sloveniji, sta obravnavani dve izjemno bogati najdišči na Krasu v zahodni Sloveniji: Viktorjev spodmol in Mala Triglavca.

Description: Two years after the first book “Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Word and Image: Slovenes 1, Styria, Porabje and Prekmurje, Carinthia” (2016) has been published, is now out also the second book: “Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Word and Image: Slovenes 2”, presenting Kranjska (Carniola) and Primorje (Coastal region). Both books make the whole picture of Slovenes as included in the monumental book series “Die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild” which was projected by the archeduke Rudolf and was published between 1884–1902. Translated are the chapters which discuss life, culture and economy of Slovenes living in Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Prevailing are the ethnographical descriptions of the regions, the presentation of inhabitants and their position in the context of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and other countries of that time. The authors are of different profiles and interests, and their studies are important sources for Slovenian culture and economy which was up till now too often overlooked.

Prevedena poglavja podajajo pregledno podobo življenja, kulture in gospodarstva Slovencev v tistem času. Prevladujejo različni etnološki opisi regij in prebivalstva, postavljeni v politični in kulturnozgodovinski kontekst Avstro-Ogrske v drugi polovici 19. stoletja. Description: The book ('Tradition in the Contemporary World. Janče: the Green Threshold of Ljubljana') deals with dimensions of tradition in modernity, as reflected in the half-urbanized environment on the northeastern outskirts of Ljubljana - at Janče with its surroundings. The author analyzes the concept of tradition, which is one of the core in ethnology and folklore studies, and presents its concretizations in the ethnographic field, especially its role in local festivals. She mainly focuses on peasant work and its ritual dimensions as well as on other types of heritage/tradition of rural environment. Heritage is not only positively valued by local inhabitants, but also represented in the idealistic form, thus creating rural idyll, attractive for tourists. Having a special value, it has become the means of invoking and preserving identifications with certain communities and the area itself, and is at the same time also used as an argument in general and sustainable development of the area.

Description: Divided as it is, philology is constantly improving through the emergence of new interdisciplinary sciences. One among them is ethnolinguistics. It has taken particularly firm roots in Slavic studies, especially with the Russian and Polish schools. While the diachronous researches of Nikita I. Tolstoy in Svetlana Tolstaya reach as far back as Slavic mythology, the Polish school, headed by Jerzy Bartmińsky, flirts with cognitive linguistics and is more interested, through its synchronous approach, in contemporary themes. The present monograph aims to evaluate the work carried out in this field to date and to raise awareness of the new interdisciplinary direction, which may link up the ethnologies and linguistics of different directions.

Description: Borovo gostüvanje, a wedding with a pine tree, is a Carnival tradition characteristic of the region of Prekmurje in northeast Slovenia~of the Porabje in Hungary and the area extending toward northeast Hungaria~and of Austrian Burgenland and Styria. The custom was traditionally held if there had not been a single wedding in the village during fášenk time (the period between Christmas and Shrovetide). In the present time, this is no longer relevant. The tradition is recreated in order to collect funds for village matters, particularly for the local fire brigade~to keep the tradition going~and to attract tourists. Elderly villagers say that the principal objective has always been to do something for the village and its development. This text focuses on the village of Predanovci, where the custom had been observed by this author in 2002. Yet the author did not limit herself merely to this event but analyzed previous ones as well~examined the ways in which the older generation of the villagers still remembered the custom from their younger days~their relation to village traditions~and their perspective on the importance of this custom in the past and at present.
Description: Borovo gostüvanje je svatba z borom, pustna šega, značilna za Prekmurje, za slovensko Porabje in širše območje na Madžarskem, na Gradiščanskem in avstrijskem Štajerskem.

Description: The second part of the monograph on Divje babe I deals in detail with archaeological finds from this important Middle and Upper Palaeolithic site. Edited by Ivan Turk, the monograph contains 17 chapters, written by seven authors.
Description: Monografija obravnava vse arheološke najdbe tega najdišča (kamnite in koščene izdelke, ognjišča in z njimi povezane obognjiščne dejavnosti in posamične kostne najdbe, ki so bile predmet manipulacij paleolitskih obiskovalcev Divjih bab I), vse s pomočjo raziskovalnih tehnik, ki doslej niso bile uporabljene pri tovrstnih raziskavah v Sloveniji. Avtorji so po njihovi zaslugi prišli od prvotnih predvidevanj do nekaterih nepričakovanih dobro argumentiranih spoznanj na področju slabo poznanega duhovnega sveta neandertalcev – evropskih praprebivalcev.

Description: Besedna umetnost za svoje izražanje uporablja jezikovna sredstva.

Description: “The Disappearing Tombstone and Other Stories from Emona” is a collection of ten stories about real people, who once lived in Emona or the surrounding countryside. These stories shed light on the everyday lives and often highly unusual fates of these people. The eleventh story reveals why the Romans believed that Emona had been founded by Jason and his Argonauts. The myth would lead later historians to believe that Emona was older than Rome. The stories are based on the inscriptions from Roman funerary and other monuments, which are kept the lapidarium of the National Museum of Slovenia and in the City Museum of Ljubljana (MGML). The booklet is partly a result of the EAGLE project (“Europeana Network of Ancient Greek and Latin Epigraphy”) and partly of the programme “Archaeological Investigations” of the Institute of Archaeology ZRC SAZU.
Description: Zgodbe so nastale na osnovi rimskih spomenikov z napisi, ki jih hranita Narodni muzej Slovenije in Muzej in galerije mesta Ljubljane. Rimski napisi Emone in širše okolice so namreč zelo zanimiv vir podatkov o življenju v Emoni in nam na neposreden način razkrivajo različne plati vsakdanjika emonskih prebivalcev.

Description: In the first part of the Divje babe I monograph, data from the field of the natural sciences is presented, analysed and interpreted. This is primarily stratigraphic, sedimentological and chronological data and data on the remains of flora and fauna. The latter includes detailed analysis of charcoal from a number of hearths and the remains small and large mammals, with a stress on cave bear. The series of absolute ESR datings and the climatogram of the site should be highlighted in particular, which shows the course of temperature and humidity by layers in the chronozone of the Early and Middle Würm or oxygen isotope stages OIS 5 and OIS 3. The remains of flora and fauna from OIS 3 in particular are analysed, which enables new insight into palaeo-environmental and climatic conditions of this poorly known chronological segment in Slovenia and neighbouring regions. Archaeological finds, including Mousterian bone artefacts, will be presented in the planned second part of the monograph.

Description: The region of Ptuj lies on one of the central traffic axes within the broader margins of the Eastern Alps, and already in the distant past represented an important settlement centre. This monograph incorporates the knowledge hitherto gained abouth settlement history, from the Eneolithic to the Early Middle Ages in the eastern area of Ptuj, in Rabelčja vas. The emphasis is on the Roman Period, when the eastern district of the Roman town of Poetovio was beginning to spread here.Within the area of Rabelčja vas, which comprises nearly one-third of the Roman town of Poetovio, over a period of two centuries more than 160 discoveries and researches have taken place. During the past four decades, extensive rescue excavations have been carried out here, which have revealed numerous prehistorical remains, and also the eastern, crafts quarter of the ancient town, together with the main road and extensive burial sites.

Description: The most topical Middle Paleolithic site in Slovenia is presented in full and discussed in detail in this series. The Divje Babe I cave site became famous for the archaeological discovery of what current investigations indicate could be the oldest flute, made of the bone of a cave bear, yet discovered. The principal part of the compilation is dedicated to a typological, technological, acoustic and musicological discussion of the remarkable find. Individual chapters present the stratigraphy, chronology, fauna and flora from the site, in addition to the Paleolithic material finds (however, only up to the layer including the bone flute). The book incorporates the first abridged and summarized determinations from the current archaeological excavations, which are not yet concluded. In addition to the editor, who is also the author and coauthor of the majority of chapters, the following individuals also provided contributions to the series: G. Bastiani, M. Culiberg, J. Dirjec, B. Kavur, B. Kryštufek, T.-L. Ku, D. Kunej, D. E. Nelson, M. Omrzel-Terlep and A. Šercelj.
Description: V zborniku je celovito predstavljeno in obdelano trenutno najbolj aktualno srednjepaleolitsko najdišče v Sloveniji. Ku, D. Kunej, D. E. Nelson, M. Omrzel-Terlep in A. Šercelj.

Description: The monograph Roman Glass of Slovenia, differs only in minor details from the doctoral dissertation of the author. The first part is dedicated to the typological and chronological presentation of the Roman glass (1st–5th cent.) from the territory of modern Slovenia~the second one is a presentation and review of local glass production in the Roman period on Slovene territory.
Description: Monografija prinaša celovit opis razvoja steklarstva na slovenskih tleh od prazgodovine do 5. stoletja.

Description: The monograph Drobci ledenodobnega okolja (“Fragments of Ice Age environments”) presents a compilation of seventeen chapters in which experts from different scientific fields discuss specific topics related to the Ice Age in Europe. Ten of them are devoted to the presentation, analysis and interpretation of palaeontological data concerning various large mammal species ranging from mastodon and mammoth to the cave hyena, ibex, cave lion and bears, with the emphasis being placed on the cave bear. Several chapters address the topic of Last Glacial climatic conditions in the Southeastern Alps by studying fossil micromammal and palaeobotanical remains as well as geoarchaeologiocal data. A special article is devoted to a comprehensive review of previous analysis of the bone flute from Divje babe I, but includes also new musicological research findings on the extraordinary technical capabilities of this oldest musical instrument. The concluding chapter presents a study of old manuscripts and printed sources, providing some interesting insights into the discovery of one of the most significant palaeontological sites in Slovenia - the cave of Mokriška jama. The monograph is dedicated to the anniversary of the prominent researcher of the Slovenian Palaeolithic - Ivan Turk. His work, main achievements and selected bibliography are briefly presented in the introductory chapter.
Description: Ormož ranks among the most important archaeological sites in Slovenia. The fortified settlement from the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age extended over the area where the town stands today. It developed on a high-lying terrace on the left bank of the river Drava, which forms a broad bend right at the foothills. This site was intentionally selected, since towards the river it was protected by a steep slope, and to the east and west by relatively deep natural dykes. In the present monograph a survey is given of the results of the excavations which were carried out in Ormož during the period from 1974 to 1981.
Description: Ormož sodi med najpomembnejša arheološka najdišča v Sloveniji.

Description: The following results from excavations carried out in 1987 at Sermin near Koper are presented in the monograph: the extent of the settlement, the stratigraphy, the remains of Bronze Age houses and Roman levelling of the ground. Metal, glass and bone material finds, as well as Prehistoric and Roman pottery, are analyzed in detail. It was determined that settlement was of long duration, probably continuous from the Middle Neolithic to the middle of the 1st century AD. Due tot ehir abundance, material finds dating to the Middle and Late Bronze Ages as well as the Early Roman period are more striking. The settlement at Sermin was constantly situated in the middle of trade and cultural currents between Italy, the Balkans and the Mediterranean region. The material finds are also an indication of the significance of the settlement during the period of the earliest Romanization. Attesting the plentiful production of wine and amphorae along the Adriatic coast of Italy already from the middle of the 2nd centruy BC, the archaeological chapters are complemented by chemical and mineralogical research on the ceramics of the amphorae. The paleo-vegetational conditions in the coastal region of Koper are presented at the end. The development of settlement in the region of northwestern Istria from Prehistoric times to the Early Middle Ages is described in the supplement.
Description: V knjigi so predstavljeni rezultati sondiranj v Serminu pri Kopru iz leta 1987: obseg poselitve najdišča, stratigrafija, ostanki bronastodobne hiše in rimskodobno izravnalno nasutje. Kr. Na koncu so predstavljene paleovegetacijske razmere v Koprskem primorju.

Description: The e-publication entitled Gradivo za topografijo Dolenjske, Posavja in Bele krajine v železni dobi ('Available evidence for the topography of the Dolenjska, Posavje and Bela krajina regions in the Iron Age', only in Slovenian) presents over six hundred sites in the three regions of south-eastern Slovenia that date from this distant period of the past. It is a database that upgrades the first register of Slovene archaeological heritage (Arheološka najdišča Slovenije), published in 1975 by the Institute of Archaeology at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. This register was created with the data then available in literature, while field surveys were only performed on select sites or areas. It was followed up by a project devoting to the archaeological topography of Slovenia (Arheološke topografije Slovenije), the main objective of which was to accurately map the already known sites, as well as to discover new ones. Of all the regions of Slovenia, only the updated topography of three regions was published, among them Bela krajina, which was an integral part of the Dolenjska community in the Early Iron Age.
Description: V publikaciji je predstavljeno čez šeststo najdišč iz železne dobe, pomembnega obdobja naše najstarejše preteklosti.

Description: The book describes the role of singing and (folk) songs in the Gorizia Hills (Goriška brda) within the processes of shaping the political nation and facilitating national identification in the second half of the nineteenth century. In addition to the use of the Slovene language at school and church and defining Slovene as the language of common use in censuses, national activists encouraged inhabitants to express identification with the singing of Slovene “folk” songs. Therefore they promoted the performances of choirs and tried to sweep-out the singing of non-Slovene songs - especially Friulian and Italian. The singing outside the reading and singing societies was influenced by the way of life, which was strongly marked by the system of tenant farming. The book also presents the research of folk songs in the Gorizia Hills, with special emphasis on short songs with strong dialect features, which in everyday life of the inhabitants complemented the repertoire of folk and religious songs known in the wider Slovenian territory.
Description: Monografija Vi čuvarji ste obmejni osvetljuje dejavnike in procese, ki so v 19. stoletju vplivali na poudarjanje narodne identifikacije kmečkih prebivalcev Goriških brd. Narodni aktivisti so poleg rabe slovenskega jezika v šoli in cerkvi in opredeljevanja za slovenski pogovorni jezik na popisih posebej spodbujali Brice k izražanju identifikacije s petjem slovenskih »narodnih« pesmi. Zato so pospeševali delovanje pevskih zborov in skušali iztrebiti petje neslovenskih pesmi – predvsem furlanskih in italijanskih.

Description: The Ljubljanica River with its tributaries has witnessed no less than a quarter of a century of organised underwater research. The latter has shown that the archaeological complex there unquestionably ranks among the most interesting ones in Slovenia with the finds from the beds and banks of the waterways speaking of nearby settlements, cemeteries, forts, control points or places of cult. These, together with various types of river vessels and other traces of water exploitation, improve in many ways the knowledge of the phenomenon that is the Ljubljansko barje as a cultural landscape as well as its specific dynamics closely related to the natural changes in the environment from the early periods of the prehistory onwards.

Description: Simply put, the modern Slovenian nation began as a cultural project in the age of Enlightenment. Its basic axis has been Standard Slovenian as one of Slavic languages. The book describes from where the speakers of the initial common Slavic language arrived at our place, as well as where and when Slavs came into being. Throughout the history of long ages the author observes the relationship between the speakers of the language, political power, and particularly the Church as an institution with a universal ideology which as such does not in any way encourage local identity. The book also recalls the millennial roots of Slovenian identity whose present state is not a logical consequence of the past, much less the beginning of self-evident future. The author knows that the final image of the past is always created by the reader themself, therefore using challenging illustrations he constantly encourages them to think. The author also does not expect the reader to agree with him, but would like them to find some causal connections of their own and thus recover the lost memory of who they are.

Description: Most na Soči is an archaeological site of key importance in the Posočje region and also one that witnessed most extensive investigations. Remains of its rich distant past have been coming to light over the last century and a half, either as chance finds or through archaeological excavations of the settlement from the Bronze, Iron and Roman Ages, as well as the associated cemeteries. This book presents the recent investigations on the left bank of the Idrijca, where a vast Iron Age cemetery has been known since the end of the 19th century. At its northern edge, a total of 88 graves were excavated by the Tolminski muzej in 2000–2016, when three locations were investigated: Pucarjev rob, Repelc and Lipičarjev vrt. Most of the graves date to the Iron Age, a dozen to the Roman period and one to the Early Middle Ages. In their immediate vicinity, a contemporary cremation pit and a stone drywall were discovered, under the graves also habitation remains from the Late Bronze Age.

Description: In the collected papers the results of the research on hilltop settlement Spaha above Brezovica pri Predgradu are introduced. The site was excavated by Greta Hirschbäck-Merhar during the years 1979 and 1984. Spaha was settled in the period of Sava group, Lasinja culture, horizon of pottery with furrowed incisions, and probably also in the period of Urnfield culture. In the 16th century on the top of Spaha a watchtower was erected, from which the local community was being informed about the arrivals of plundering hordes of Turks. The reasons for the settling the top of the hill are searched in the appearance of first copper ore prospectors in this part of Europe and in the vicinity of deposits of raw material used for querns which were most probably used by agriculture communities of nearby Bela krajina. In the monograph are presented the relative and absolute chronologies of the Neolithic and earlier Eneolithic period of continental Slovenia.

Description: The book contains 23 articles from various disciplines, reflecting Ložar’s intellectual work in Slovenia and in emigration. Rajko Ložar – an ethnologist, archeologist, art historian, literary, art, and music critic, museum worker, and publicist – was engaged in scholarly and professional work in Slovenia until the end of the Second World War. He lived and worked in Austrian Carinthia until the end of 1951 as a professor, collector, and researcher of ethnographic material, and then emigrated to the United States, where he was the director of the City Museum of Manitowoc, WI from 1956 until his retirement in 1969. His death there in 1985 marked the end of a variegated life and career. The articles join together the observations of scholars that have addressed Ložar and his work or were his successors, as well as those that knew him personally. Indirectly, through Ložar’s work, the articles discuss the history of the disciplines that he was connected with, and at the same time serve as narratives about the broader historical, social, and intellectual pulse of the time he worked in. The publication includes a bibliography of Ložar’s collected published and unpublished works.
Description: V knjigi so zbrane razprave, ki z večdisciplinarne perspektive govorijo o intelektualnem delovanju Rajka Ložarja v Sloveniji in izseljenstvu.

Description: Avaldsnes on Karmøy in Rogaland, which according to Snorre was King Harald Fairhair's royal estate, has been the center of a major research effort since 2007. Extensive excavations have, among other things, uncovered the remains of a lordly settlement from the AD 200s–400s and the ruins of a royal masonry complex from around AD 1300. Important insights have been gained about the place, the region, and the history of the Norwegian kingdom, and the results are also of significance for international scholarly debates. The papers in this book are based on lectures from the Karmøy Seminar 2022, and have a joint spotlight on the nature of lordship and kingship. The themes range from tribal societies in Roman times via the first kings of the Viking Age to the Norwegian kingdom's collapse at Håkon 6. Magnusson's death in 1380. Prominent professionals from Norway, Sweden and England discuss, among other things, the migrations of Ryger, Goths, and other tribes in the continent in the first centuries AD, the queens and queen mothers of the Viking Age, Harald Fairhair's overseas contacts, and the Norwegian kingship's roots in Nordvegen, the sailing route along the western coast of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The papers are written to be readable by scholars as well as the interested public.
Magnussons død i 1380.

Če poznamo kuhinjske postopke, razumemo rezultat njihovega delovanja. Knjiga gradi model zgodnjesrednjeveške kuhinjske kulture z analizo jezikovnih in etnoloških virov, jih sooča z arheološkimi viri in preizkuša z arheologijo poskusov. Ker so izhodišče slovanski jeziki, oblikuje podobo kuhinje prvenstveno pri Starih Slovanih. Rezultat je priročniški nabor postopkovnih povezav in predmetnih sestavov, ki dajejo razlage posameznih arheoloških sestavin kuhinjske kulture.

Description: The book Medieval Archaeology of Bled Island is presenting the results of a state-of-the-art archaeological analysis of data from archaeological excavations of the 1962 and 1964.

Description: The archaeological excavations of the Župna cerkev cemetery in Kranj began in 1953 and were completed in 2013. The explored cemetery consists of 2,936 graves and the Museum of Gorenjska (Gorenjski muzej) in Kranj has inventoried 3,263 items from this cemetery. The purpose of the monograph is the publication of the graves excavated between 1964 and 1970 by Andrej Valič, curator at the Museum of Gorenjska. Data are drawn from all available sources (field documentation, artefacts, photographs, inventory books, analysis of skeletons, etc.).The plan of the graves, which took shape while studying the material, for the first time combines all the previously excavated graves of the Župna cerkev cemetery in Kranj. Because of the size of the cemetery and the high density of burials in some parts, the quadrants are shown by individual pages instead of the usual one-piece insert. The first part of the book is a study on the nature of the data presented, while the catalogue in addition to the usual data contains also comments on all potential oddities and inconsistencies.
Description: Arheološka izkopavanja grobišča Župna cerkev v Kranju so se začela leta 1953 in so z manjšmi in večjimi razmiki potekala do leta 2013.

Description: Sixty-year excavation (1953 to 2013) of Župna Cerkev Cemetery in Kranj unearthed almost 3000 graves. The monograph introduces 1048 graves found between 1972 and 2010. The excavations were initially led by Andrej Valič, the curator of the Gorenjski muzej (1972 and 73, 862 graves). Milan Sagadin from ZVKD Kranj continued the dig from 1984 to 2001 (163 graves), followed by Draško Josipovič (Megalan Skupina, d. o. o., 2003 to 2010), who excavated 23 more graves. An extensive chapter presents the artefacts of Župna Cerkev Cemetery with no data about their location. The varied documentation, which has changed over the years, is the basis for the publication of all available data on the graves and artefacts kept by the Gorenjski muzej in Kranj. The introduction, a study on the nature of the data, comments on possible inconsistencies between the various types of documentation. Primarily it deals with the question of reliability of individual grave good assemblages, which is the basis for all further analysis. The discussed group of graves originates mainly from the northern exterior of the church and from the interior of the present-day church, that is, from the place where graves intertwined with the remains of older church and non-church buildings. Their building development and changing usability will be impossible to explain without good knowledge of the cemetery.
Description: Šestdesetletna izkopavanja (od 1953 do 2013) grobišča Župna cerkev v Kranju so odkrila skoraj 3000 grobov.

Description: This book ('Folkloristic Portraits from three Centuries. From baroque to modernism') preseints 18 profiled personalities from the Slovenian spiritual, cultural history and linguistics from 17th Century (J. V. Valvasor, J. Svetokriški, and 18th Century (M. Pohlin, U. Jarnik) up to most of them in the 19th Century (P. Danjko, A. M. Slomšek, M. Ravnikar-Poženčan, A. Murko, S. Vraz, E. Korytko, J. Trdina, M. Valjavec. V. Urbas, G. Krek, S. Škrabec, G. Križnik, S. Rutar) to K. Štrekelj. The personalities are illuminated from folkloristic view, following the prehistory this profession.

Description: Cvinger near Vir pri Stični is considered one of the most important Iron Age center in the southeastern alpine region. Its importance reflects not only in the size and location in the area, but also in the economic power of the population, which can be seen from the rich artefacts found at Stična necropolises. Until now it was published about Stična a number of scientific papers, articles and monographs, mostly dealing with finds from the graves. They were also presented the results of settlement excavations with international participation in the years 1967 to 1974, but without a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the pottery. It is now dedicated to this book, divided into three parts. The first part provides a revision of settlement stratigraphic and chronological sequence, which allows connection between the often elusive settlement and fortification phases and their mostly ceramic material. The second part of the core of the debate, it is an analytical study of ceramics (method of manufacture, shape, decoration), concludes, however, with a view to the cultural development of the village and chronological frame, as it outlines the ceramic material. The third part is the catalogue of a representative sample of the presented finds.22 appendices show cross sections of the tranches with complexes of finds marked.

Description: The monograph Shranli smo jih v bančah ('We saved them in chests') aims to present Slovenian clothing terminology in the Canale Valley (Slo. Kanalska dolina). It is the result of research conducted in cooperation with the Planika Kanalska dolina Slovenian cultural centre between 2003–2007 and in 2014. It has been formatted as a trilingual (English-German-Italian) concordance dictionary in which the most common collocations are presented alongside clothing terminology. The dictionary includes 657 entries and is based on approximately 1,400 audio extracts from around 16 hours of recording of guided conversations with five informants from Valbruna (Slo. Ovčja vas), Camporosso (Slo. Žabnice) and Uggoviza (Slo. Ukve). The dictionary’s introduction, containing a presentation of the research conducted, the structure of the dictionary entries and a list of abbreviations and acronyms, is accompanied by a transcription of the dialect text Oblačila naših dedkov in babic (Our grandparents’ clothing) by the main informant, Maria Moschitz, together with some photographic material. To make searching through the dictionary easier for users with expertise in several or other languages as well, we have provided lists of entries in which dialect words can be searched against Standard Slovenian, Italian and German, as well as reverse index.
Začetna, slovensko-italijanska razdelka vsebujeta prepis narečnega besedila Oblačila naših dedkov in babic glavne informantke Marie Moschitz, obogaten s slikovnim gradivom, in slovarski uvod s predstavitvijo raziskave, prikazom sestave gesel ter seznamom kratic in krajšav.

Description: The monograph illustrates the festive year of Slovenes in the Canale Valley from the perspective of current ritualistic practices (still in use today). The identifying elements of the Slovenian linguistic community are recognizable in the implementation of various (popular) religious practices by the local population. The author presents the rituals (with selected prayer formulas), described as an integral part of their life by Slovenian-speaking informants – all of whom are indigenous, native people of the Canale Valley – that was described, from the point of view of experts in the fields (e.g. Kuret 1989) as typical of the Slovenian community in general.
Description: Monografija prinaša pregled ljudskega obredja prebivalstva Kanalske doline, ki ga avtorica prepoznava kot pomemben identifikacijski element tamkajšnje slovenske jezikovne skupnosti.

Description: The territory of present-day Slovenia reached one of its economic and cultural peaks in the 1st millennium BC, when the Hallstatt Culture prospered, its achievements being comparable with the most developed cultures in Ancient Europe. This culture arose from Urnfield Culture roots under the influence of the Mediterranean world~they adopted the new technology of iron production, implemented a new social pattern and fully developed their artistic inspiration.
Description: V 1. tisočletju pr.

Description: This monograph is about the ongoing, unstable reconstruction of spaces and places in the village of Dhërmi/Drimades of southern Albania. It is based on twelve months of anthropological field research in that village. Particular consideration is given to the process of reconfiguration and redefinition of the meanings that pertain to the village and its people. The monograph focuses on local peoples’ biographies, oral histories, rhetorical claims, and their everyday discourses, through which it is shown how the meanings of the village are reconstructed through interrelations of the locals with other people and places. The underlying theme is the continuity of movements and interrelations through which the local people of Dhërmi/Drimades recreate and reproduce the sense of locatedness of “their” village and themselves.
Description: Monografija se ukvarja z antropološkimi vprašanji nenehne in nestabilne rekonstrukcije prostora in kraja v vasi Dhërmi/Dimades v južni Albaniji.

Description: In this volume of studies, Animal: Moments of Affect, Moments of Pain, eight ethnologists apply a cultural perspective to people’s varied and complex relationships with other species. The contributions focus on wild animals, that is, those that are rarely found in the authors’ immediate vicinity. Based on ongoing research, the articles discuss themes such as conflicts and joys in the birdwatching world, charismatic animals in various exhibition contexts, children’s fears, morbid animal jokes and the ritual transformation of living animals into edible meat. The texts range from the tender, comical and cute to death and existential vulnerability. The book begins with the editors presenting an overview of how animals have been produced, noticed and studied in a mostly Nordic humanistic research context. Then the articles follow. Based on the idea of affective logic, Elin Lundquist follows the on-site monitoring of the bird hunting that takes place annually in Malta. Mattias Frihammar uses observations at a wilderness gallery with taxidermied animals to reflect on local identity. Lars Kaijser examines the ambivalent and conflicted portrayal of sharks in public aquariums. Sverker Hyltén-Cavallius writes about the death of extinct animals and how this is displayed in natural history museums. Susanne Nylund Skog examines birdwatchers’ stories as an expression of collecting and as a way of manifesting status. With lobster cartoons as a starting point, Simon Ekström shows how these depict both animal rights issues and human anxiety. Helena Hörnfeldt investigates animal fear and the diffuse boundary between humans and animals. Proceeding from different depictions of slaughter and the preparation of meat, Michelle Zethson problematizes how some animals are made edible. The volume ends with an epilogue by the editors commenting on the findings.

They present new interpretations of some of the Old Scandinavian texts as well as of archaeological material: the runic inscription on the Eggja stone (Andreas Nordberg), texts about the fight between the god Thor and the giant Hrungnir (Tommy Kuusela), about the valkyries (Britt-Mari Näsström), about a phalos cult (Maths Bertell), about fylgjur, a type of beings regarded as related to the fate of a person (Eldar Heide), about enclosed areas for fights and battles (Torsten Blomkvist), about the defilement of sacred areas and places as a power strategy (Olof Sundqvist), about ritualisations of peace negotiations (Stefan Olsson), and about Ragnarök, the end and renewing of the world (Anders Hultgård). The book has been edited by Hakan Rydving and Stefan Olsson, both from the The Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion (AHKR) at the University of Bergen.

Description: This publication presents fifty-four Hallstatt necropolises from central Slovenia, which are crucial to the course of researching the settlement and social structures of the Early Iron Age. Topographic sources are proffered as well as all the excavated materials, among which are also unique specimens. The book is divided into three parts. The first section extends a review of the history of excavations of Hallstatt tumuli, from the very onset and all through to WWI. It is a comprehensive study of the history of archaeology in Slovenia, posing the development of museology, the heritage protection profession and the professional and scientific efforts of the then investigators. Numerous illustrations of yet unpublished documents, preserved mainly in foreign museums and archives, are incorporated in the text. The second section is dedicated to the issue of chronology and the cultural- historical evaluation of Hallstatt necropolises in the Dolenjska region, which regarding their richness easily compare with the most important of necropolises in neighboring countries. It is precisely the tumulus necropolises from the Dolenjska region that form the foundations for the concept of the southeastern Alpine Hallstatt culture, which during the first millennium BC represented one of the most developed cultures in Europe.
Description: V knjigi je predstavljenih štiriinpetdeset halštatskih nekropol Dolenjske, ki so nadvse pomembne za proučevanje poselitvenih in družbenih struktur starejše železne dobe.

Description: Archaeological sites whose importance extends beyond a Slovenian framework undoubtedly include the Bronze Age settlement of Oloris near Doljni Lakoš. The site was excavated in the eighties by staff of the Regional Museum in Murska Sobota and members of the Institute of Archaeology, ZRC SAZU, from Ljubljana.
Description: Prostrana ravnica ob vznožju Lendavskih goric, prek katere so že od nekdaj vodile pomembne poti, skriva bogate kulturne ostaline.

Description: E-knjiga Bedenice.

Description: One of the most important and largest Late Roman and Early Medieval sites in the eastern Alpine region is presented in this book. Two seasons of rescue excavations have illuminated the appearance of this densely inhabited settlement, which was occupied, perhaps only with minor breaks, from the 4th- 9th centuries AD. Seven partially destroyed wooden houses, a completely preserved stone cult structure, and part of a Late Roman child cemetery have enabled, along with the incorporation of information from earlier finds, the convincing reconstruction of existence in the settlement. Part of the dwellings at Tinje can be attributed to the period of the 7th-9th centuries. The excavations at Tinje have thus to a great extent broached the central problem of Slovenian ethnogenesis: the contact between the Romanized indigenous population and the immigrants Slavs. Coarse pottery predominates among the small finds, and it is presented in detail in the book. Material for comparative analysis was included from all more important Late Roman settlements in the eastern Alpine region, and this thus represents an introduction to the study of this most often found and highly indicative material. Tinje above Loka pri Žusmu has been confirmed with these results as an archaeological site of the highest category, of crucial importance for understanding the ethnogenesis of the Slovenians.
Sedem delno uničenih lesenih hiš, v celoti ohranjen zidan kultni objekt in del poznoantičnega otroškega grobišča omogočajo ob upoštevanju starejših najdb zanesljivo rekonstrukcijo življenja v naselbini. Raziskave na Tinju so zato v veliki meri načele osrednji problem slovenske etnogeneze: stik romaniziranega staroselskega prebivalstva s priseljenimi Slovani.

Description: The monograph presents the settlement of north-eastern Slovenia during the Late Bronze Age. It is divided into three parts. The first brings an analysis of the settlements, cemeteries, hoards and stray finds, i.e. all the structures that define the cultural landscape. The analysis shows a relatively dense habitation in the Early Bronze Age, followed first by a lull and then a peak, with the settlement network becoming densest towards the end of the second millennium BC.This is followed by a discussion on the typochronology of the pottery from the Bronze Age settlements at Ormož, Ptuj and Gornja Radgona. The last chapter of the first part offers an overview of the Late Bronze Age in north-eastern Slovenia and presents the living conditions, the process of forming centres, the economic basis as well as the contacts with distant places. The second and third parts of the book present the field investigations and finds from Grajski grič in Ptuj and Grajski hrib in Gornja Radgona. These two important hilltop settlements represented, together with the fortified settlement at Ormož, important Bronze Age centres in the settlement network of north-eastern Slovenia.

Description: The book discusses the minor settlements that dotted the territory of present-day Slovenia in the Roman period. This geographically diverse territory was crossed by important lines of communication and divided between three large administrative units of the Roman state: Italy and the provinces of Noricum and Upper Pannonia. Twenty-six authors wrote contributions on individual settlements in a comprehensive and clear manner roughly following a common concept. The presentation of each settlement opens with its location and name in Antiquity, possible habitation traces from prehistory, mentions in ancient literary texts and documents, and recovered epigraphic evidence. The next, main part offers an overview of the archaeological remains from the Roman period: topography, infrastructure, buildings, cemeteries and portable remains of particular significance. This is followed by the information on the status of a settlement, social standing of its inhabitants, their administrative or military functions, as well as professional or ethnical background. All is brought together in an outline of the historical development of each settlement.
Description: Monografija je posvečena manjšim rimskim naseljem, ki ležijo na območju današnje Slovenije, kamor so segale tri velike upravne enote rimske države: Italija ter provinci Norik in Zgornja Panonija. V samostojnih poglavjih je zgoščeno in po skupnem konceptu predstavljenih dvajset naselij različnega tipa in stopnje raziskanosti. Podatki so umeščeni v prostor, podprti s kartami in načrti, vsebinsko primerljivi in jasno ovrednoteni. Vsako poglavje vsebuje podatke o legi naselja in njegovem antičnem imenu, kratko zgodovino raziskav, morebitno obljudenost lokacije v prazgodovini, predstavitev antičnih literarnih virov in epigrafskih spomenikov. Osrednji del je usmerjen v pregled arheoloških ostankov rimske dobe: v topografijo, infrastrukturo, stavbe, grobišča in premične ostanke posebnega pomena. Sledijo podatki o statusu naselja, o družbenem položaju posameznih prebivalcev, njihovih administrativnih ali vojaških funkcijah, poklicih in etnični pripadnosti. Vsako poglavje zaokroža oris zgodovinskega razvoja naselja.

Description: It was in the spring of 1953 when digging pits to plant trees in front of the Prešeren’s Theatre in Kranj revealed some graves. Extensive excavations followed, led by Jože Kastelic and Vinko Šribar from the National Museum. 308 graves were excavated: 15 were recognised as the so-called (later) “Baroque” graves and 293 as “Ketlach”, that is Early Medieval ones. The finds were first stored in the National Museum in Ljubljana, and later moved to the Gorenjski museum in Kranj, while all the documentation remained in Ljubljana.
