Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Oxygen isotope composition of ground ice (application to paleogeocryological reconstructions) is an encyclopedic synthesis of northern Eurasia cryolithozone quaternary geology, with respect to the question of permafrost response to climate change. It is written in Russian but adapted for the English reader; the contents, all figure captions and summary are translated into English. Considerable information has become available on about 50 sequences of syncryogenic late quaternary sediments from Yamal and Gydan Peninsulas, North and Central Yakutia, Chukotka, Magadan and Transbaikal Regions. They were studied by complex geocryologic analysis. The results of sound research encompassing this extensive region will be not only highly important fpr geocryology but would also contribute significantly to both quaternary studies and the present international emphasis on programs involving climate and global changes. This permits interregional cryostratigraphic correlations and paleogeocryologic reconstructions. Chronologic dating is accomplished with hundreds of radiocarbon dates. Winter temperature reconstructions are based on oxygen - 18 content changes in syngenetic ice wedges. Summer temperatures are reconstructed by modificated interpretations of palynologic data. Soundly based reconstructions of summer and winter temperatures and of permafrost boundaries reflecting the influence of climate change are valuable. The book contains numerous diagrams, tables of 14C, 18O, pollen and hydrochemical data. A catalogue of dated mammoth remains is also presented. Virtually all known determinations of 18O in permafrost and other oxygen containing media are collated. Included also are original paleoclimatic and paleogeocryologic maps for, winter and summer separately for key periods of last 40 kyr. The interdisciplinary character of the monograph will be useful for scientists specializing in quaternary geology, paleoclimatology, geocryology and for students of geology, geography and ecology.
