Description: Arua como lugar estratégico para a observação da vida urbana no que esta tem de mais peculiar é o tema central deste livro. A proposta é simples e exploratoria: procurar diferentes aproximações a esta realidade complexa a partir do olhar da antropologia, da história, da sociología e da arquitectura, em contextos geográficos e temporais distintos. Description: No ano de 2017, o Brasil se posicionou como o maior produtor mundial de cana-de-açúcar e de açúcar, e o segundo de etanol. O que explica essa constância da cana-de-açúcar e dos seus derivados nas pautas de produção e de exportação brasileiras? Quais são as condicionantes físicas que explicam a expansão dos canaviais e, consequentemente, das unidades manufatureiras e industriais do açúcar, etanol e agroenergia em certas regiões do território brasileiro? Como esses determinantes, associados a fatores históricos, políticos e econômicos, levaram a arranjos territoriais e a impactos socioambientais diferenciados ao longo desses cinco séculos? Essas indagações nortearam o desdobramento dos temas tratados neste livro, descortinando um longo processo iniciado no período colonial, que aglutinou enorme quantidade de variáveis de abrangência política, econômica, social e tecnológica, ancoradas nas características físicas, sobretudo hidroclimatológicas, dos solos e do relevo das áreas onde a cana-de-açúcar, os engenhos e as usinas foram implantados.

Description: Em 1867, ao prefaciar uma das suas primeiras recolhas de literatura popular, Teófilo Braga, sugerindo uma imagem catastrófica da situação do país, referiu-se desta forma ao seu trabalho: "coligir a poesia popular portuguesa agora, no momento de transe, é como a garrafa ao mar que se atirava nos naufrágios: é para que se saiba que existiu este povo, que também sofreu e cantou". Tal sentimento nacionalista jamais viria a abandonar a sua obra antropológica, o que aliás se explica dada a matriz romântica em que ela assentava. E mesmo quando Teófilo Braga se orientou gradualmente para preocupações de cunho mais científico, isso não significou uma verdadeira ruptura com a perspectiva inicial. São pois os ecos da problemática da identidade nacional, na sua dupla vertente romântica e científica, que podemos reencontrar nestes Contos Tradicionais do Povo Português que, de resto, e independentemente do espírito com que foi concebida e realizada a sua colectânea, propõem ao leitor um conjunto de narrativas cujo fascínio permanece intacto, constituindo além disso um valiosíssimo acervo de informações em áreas que, como a Antropologia e a História das Mentalidades, se dão como objectivo a tarefa de reflectir sobre as múltiplas manifestações das sociedades tradicionais. Após termos procedido à publicação de O Povo Português nos Seus Costumes, Crenças e Tradições, também da autoria de Teófilo Braga, que tem sido considerada a primeira grande obra de conjunto da etnografia nacional, impunha-se esta reedição dos Contos Tradicionais do Povo Português, que decerto formam, juntamente com a recolha de Adolfo Coelho disponível nesta colecção, uma das mais importantes colectâneas de narrativas populares do nosso país. Também na presente reedição se manteve a divisão da obra em dois volumes, tal como sucedia na sua edição original.

O tema do corpo e da incorporação é dos mais actuais e polémicos nas ciências sociais e nas sociedades contemporâneas. Tratar-se-á apenas de uma moda temática? To serve, at a farm or at a manor, was ever since the thirteenth century the most common way to make a living, since poor people could by law be forced to accept work for a master. Service hence replaced thraldom in Sweden.In From slaves to servants, historian Martin Andersson explains how the regulations of the servants’ lives were gradually sharpened. Labourers had to become servants under the threats of punishment and forced conscription into the army. Wages were legally reduced, while other forms of making a living were blocked. The master’s right to use physical violence was increased, while the servant’s duty to obey was expanded.By the end of the sixteenth century, most farmhands and maids worked at manors or for the richest of the peasantry. They had consequently minimal chances of themselves becoming masters. Through studies of a rich material of regional law codes, court records, fine registers, royal letters and manuals for manor owners, the historian paints a rich picture of the daily lives of servants – a life formed by legal uncertainty, coercion, and poverty.

Description: O tema deste livro é o processo de formação cultural dos jovens integrantes do assentamento Mário Lago, construído através da luta de famílias de trabalhadores que formam a base de mobilização do Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, MST, no município de Ribeirão Preto-SP, auto-denominado "capital nacional do agronegócio", em razão de sua projeção nacional e internacional através do complexo de atividades econômicas vinculadas ao contexto da produção agro-industrial. A análise desenvolvida na obra pressupõe os jovens como sujeitos dos processos abertos pela luta política em torno da terra e interlocutores dos grupos com os quais convivem, configurando sua consciência perante o que experimentam no cotidiano. Além disso, identifica as referências ético-políticas construídas junto à comunidade e junto ao MST, os constrangimentos presentes em suas vidas, constituídos pelos limites objetivos e subjetivos da luta, bem como sua capacidade de projetar o futuro.

Description: This book deals with two research fields and brings them together: contrastive linguistics and third language acquisition. The book describes the following linguistic structures in Dutch and Swedish from a contrastive perspective: spatial adverbs, copula, impersonal passives, impersonal constructions and finally the posture verbs stand, zit and lie. Dutch and Swedish are usually acquired as a third language and not as a second language, which implies that learners already comprehend various other languages. When learning a language these multilingual learners have developed certain strategies which draw on their competence in earlier studied languages. In the process of learning a third language, metalinguistic and cross-linguistic awareness play an important role. Comparing linguistic structures in two closely related languages as Dutch and Swedish can enhance cross-linguistic awareness and therefore be used as a didactic tool.

O presente livro é exemplo de como um estudo intensivo de um número de casos relativamente pequeno, pode bem ser mais revelador do que estudos que, sendo mais abrangentes em termos numéricos, estão dependentes de modelos de interpretação menos intensivos. A elite que Maria Antónia Pedroso de Lima caracteriza corresponde ao contexto social de maior acumulação de riqueza a nível nacional português e até a nível internacional. Contudo, não poderíamos afirmar que se trata da elite portuguesa, já que a vida política e cultural portuguesa contemporânea é controlada por outros sectores sociais cuja radicação social nas classes medias profissionais é bem distinta da destas famílias empresariais. O relativo distanciamento destas famílias dos meios políticos e mediáticos nacionais posiciona-as numa espécie de marginalidade superior por relação aos contextos hegemónicos dominantes na sociedade portuguesa contemporânea. Description: Among the literature aimed at students of art science and other image-interpreting sciences are a number of texts that deal with theories and theoretical concepts. However, what is largely missing, and which students often call for, are texts in Swedish that show how theories and concepts can be applied in concrete interpretation situations. The series Theoretical applications in art science aims to fill that gap, with the book Materiality being the fourth in the series. The book introduces and activates a concept that in recent decades has come to take an increasingly important place in humanistic research. Art scholars - but also archaeologists, anthropologists, literary scholars, ethnologists and other humanistic researchers - are increasingly interested in the material conditions for, and the manifestations of, people's social and cultural life and exchange. But despite its topicality in today's scientific conversation, the concept of materiality can seem elusive and elusive. It moves all the way from the most tangible analyzes of the material components of a cultural artefact, to the somewhat impenetrable theorizations of objectivity, agents and networks that are usually sorted under the label ""new materialism"". However, the book Materialitet gives concrete examples of how the concept of materiality can open up interpretations of important layers of meaning in works of art and other cultural artifacts. After the initial introduction where different perspectives and conceptualisations of materiality are discussed, six researchers each do their own analysis based on their subject area. The chapters are based on new research and are written specifically for this book. The different chapters together show the multifaceted nature of the concept of materiality, but do not lock it down to a definition, but open the eyes to a number of different interpretive paths.

Constitui-se de fato em um chamamento, uma convocação e um apelo às forças da conjunção que mais uma vez podem, e devem ser acionados para regenerar a vida social de milhares de famílias que veem solucionados problemas para os quais certamente a chamada sociedade tecnológica teria condições de solucionar, em grande parte. Description: O professor Marcelo tem publicado importantes trabalhos que discutem a relação entre ciência e senso comum e este seu livro trata especialmente da Filosofia da Ciência. A obra é resultado de sua tese de doutorado, intitulada “Popularização da Ciência e Tecnologia: um discurso na interface entre uma nova ciência e um novo senso comum”. No livro, Marcelo trabalha e cita inúmeros filósofos, todos bastante conhecidos, como John Locke, David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Hegel e Karl Popper.

Description: É uma paisagem verde, de luminosidade variável mas intensa, salpicada de casas e fábricas, onde se desenham montes de baixo relevo, pequenas bouças de pinheiros, campos em rectângulo e uma variedade mal organizada de caminhos, atalhos e estradas. O que mais impressiona hoje no Baixo Minho é o movimento constante, de pessoas e veículos, dos que se deslocam dez, vinte ou trinta quilómetros para ir e vir do emprego, da escola ou da praia ao domingo. Os que trabalham no campo, esses, cruzam-se mais devagar no espaço da própria aldeia, a pé ou de tractor, e quase sempre sozinhos ou em grupos de dois ou três. Aí, ao contrário da paisagem verde e húmida, a mudança social é bem visível: no campo onde, há cinquenta anos, um lavrador dirigia um colectivo de trabalhadores, composto pelos seus familiares, criados e jornaleiros, encontra-se agora um agricultor solitário montado no tractor. Nas casas também se encontram continuidades e rupturas. As novas, de janelas e jardim virados para a estrada, abrigam famílias de operários fabris, empregados, pequenos empresários ou, ainda, agricultores que preferem construir uma casa nova e abandonar a antiga, a casa de lavoura granítica e resguardada do olhar público pelos muros envolventes.

Description: As reflexões elaboradas neste livro fazem parte dos resultados de tese de Livre Docência em Geografia Urbana da UNESP, campus de Rio Claro que abordou o consumo como categoria de análise. Por meio do entendimento do consumo procurou-se compreender os principais impactos na produção do espaço urbano, na atualidade. Observadas as metrópoles de São Paulo, Lisboa, Seoul e Dubai, construiu-se um pensamento que considera a metrópole como espaço-sedutor. Nesta construção, elaborou-se uma leitura das paisagens do consumo nas referidas metrópoles e várias foram as contradições encontradas nas relações de consumo e na produção do espaço urbano. O reconhecimento das articulações entre a produção, a circulação, o comércio e o consumo, dentro do processo de generalização da mercadoria, também ganhou importância, e assim outros conflitos foram apontados.

A importância desses documentos para a história da Universidade do Minho justificou a sua progressiva digitalização, a partir de 2012 e a sua mais recente divulgação. Para assinalar os 45 anos da Universidade, a UMinho Editora publicou, em versão digital, a obra Os Discursos dos Reitores (1974-2019), que corresponde ao primeiro volume da coletânea História e Memória da Universidade do Minho | Documenta, inserida na coleção Documentos da Editora. Trata-se de um espaço que pretende dar continuidade ao projeto da História da Universidade do Minho, desenvolvido no quadro da celebração dos 40 anos da Instituição, através da divulgação organizada de coletâneas de documentos digitalizados, visando contribuir para a afirmação e consolidação da sua identidade. Em 2024, a UMinho Editora assinala os 50 anos da fundação da Universidade do Minho publicando, em versão impressa, uma seleção de 37 dos discursos editados em 2020, a que se somam mais 3 proferidos posteriormente. A seleção que foi realizada procurou documentar as intervenções que melhor refletem, na longa duração, os momentos mais marcantes da vida da Universidade, associados ao reconhecimento de resultados e sucessos no ensino, na investigação e na interação com a sociedade, mas também ao diagnóstico das múltiplas dificuldades com que a Instituição sempre se confrontou e que fazem parte integrante da sua história.

Description: Nesse estudo, a autora analisa a existência de um hip-hop feminista jovem, negro, soteropolitano, a partir da perspectiva das mulheres inseridas nesse movimento, e interessa-se por compreender quais são suas concepções acerca do feminismo investigando se há e de que forma influenciam as experiências dessas mulheres diante de um contexto que dialoga com a cultura política local vigente. Esta obra faz parte da Coleção Bahianas que, desde sua primeira edição, em 1997, mostrou-se desafiadora e mantem-se como espaço de socialização de estudos teóricos e empíricos. Esses estudos buscam questionar os estereótipos e as convenções e de gênero que inscrevem lugares e posições distintas para mulheres e homens.

Description: Bela e criteriosa seleção de imagens das expedições científicas do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz ao interior do Brasil nos anos de 1911-1913. Ao percorrer extensas áreas da Amazônia e da região Nordeste, os expedicionários não só realizaram o levantamento das condições médico-sanitárias de tais populações, como também possibilitaram um minucioso registro de aspectos geográficos, econômicos e socioculturais dos lugares visitados. Proporciona uma reflexão em torno da linguagem fotográfica que, conjugada à pesquisa sobre a evolução das políticas públicas, revela aspectos originais da memória da saúde e das ciências biomédicas no Brasil.

Description: "Cleaning is central to all societies. It is an experience shared by almost everyone. A clean home is related to both respectability and status. The mere execution of the deed – whether it concerns taking care of other peoples’ dirt or ones’ own – ranks, however, strikingly low, contaminating everyone who has to perform it. Therefore, cleaning is permeated by hierarchies of for instance gender, class, sexuality and race. Even though cleaning activates several existential and politically burning questions, it is surprisingly non-existing in research. The point of departure for this study is anthropological, and the material is a number of interviews with Swedes of today about their habits and experiences of cleaning. In focus are questions of cleaning as a cultural symbol, a bodily practice, temporality, and as an expression of taking care of decay. By investigating the meaning of what cleaning means to people – how it is experienced, organized, and distributed in everyday life – I want to discuss how such a central part of our existence is regarded as something that lacks value."

Description: Este é um livro que trata de uma questão de fundamental importância, pois, conforme anunciado em seu próprio título, analisa as mútuas implicações entre a educação e o serviço social como um elo para a construção da cidadania. Estabelecendo como campo empírico de sua análise a prática profissional dos assistentes sociais no âmbito da política de educação em municípios paulistas, a autora procura evidenciar como esses profissionais utilizam os espaços sócio-ocupacionais que se colocam no atual ordenamento jurídico que fundamenta a referida política. Na abordagem do tema, articula-a com o Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente (ECA), que delineia a política de atendimento para tal segmento, bem como com o próprio projeto ético-político da profissão, em cujo âmbito a educação como práticada liberdade ocupa lugar central.

Toplam 8 cilt ve 49 sayı olarak çıkan mecmuanın ilk sayısı Mart 1332 (1916)’de, son sayısı Kânunusani (Ocak) 1933’te yayımlanır. “Başlangıçta düzenli olarak iki ayda bir neşredilen mecmuanın 1. cildinin 6. ve son sayısı Kânunusani 1332 (Ocak 1916) tarihlidir. Bu sayıdan iki ay sonra yayımlanan ve üzerinde “sene 2, Mart 1331 1917, sayı 7” ibaresi bulunan nüshadan sonra mecmuanın 1. serisinin yayımı Mart 1922 tarihine kadar durdurulmuştur. Bu tarihte çıkan 1. sayı ile ll. cilde ve 2. seriye başlandığından Mart 1333 / 1917’de yayımlanan ve 1. serinin son sayısı olan nüsha herhangi bir cilde dâhil edilememektedir.” Türkiye’nin seferberlik içerisinde ve savaşın tam ortasında bulunduğu 1916 yılının çetin şartları altında, biraz da iktidarda olan İttihat ve Terakki Fırkası’nın resmî ideolojisi olan Türkçülük cereyanı etkisiyle daha çok Türk tarihi, dili, edebiyatı, içtimaiyatı alanlarına ait öncü metinlerin neşredildiği, önemli meselelerin tartışıldığı makalelerle kendisini gösteren Mecmua, daha sonra İslâm felsefesine ağırlık vermeye başlar. Fırkanın Kâtib-i Umumîsi olan ve 1912-1918 arası, kültür, edebiyat, matbuat ve bilim faaliyetlerinin hemen hepsinin bir yerinde bulunan Ziya Gökalp’ın, bu Mecmuanın da fikir babası, en azından yönlendiricisi olduğu kolaylıkla ifade edilebilir. Mecmuada neşredilen yazılarda ele alınan mevzular, esasen pek çok kültür adamı gibi, Türkleşmek-İslâmlaşmak-Muasırlaşmak yazarının da temel meseleleridir. Mecmuada makalesi ya da tercümesi neşredilen hocalardan bazılarının isimleri ve Dârülfünun Edebiyat Şubesi’ndeki kadroları şöyledir: Mehmed Ali Aynî (Felsefe Tarihi Müderrisi), Köprülüzade Mehmed Fuad (Türk Edebiyatı Tarihi Müderrisi), Mustafa Şekip (Tunç) (Rûhiyât Muallimi), Ziya Gökalp (İçtimaiyât Müderrisi), İsmail Hakkı (Baltacıoğlu) (Terbiye Müderrisi), Necip Âsım (Yazıksız) (Türk Lisaniyâtı ve Türk Tarihi Müderrisi), Mehmed Emin (Erişirgil), (Felsede Tarihi Muallimi), Hüseyin Daniş (İran Edebiyatı ve Farsça Müderrisi), Mehmed Şemseddin (Günaltay) (İslâm Tarihi Müderrisi), İzmirli İsmail Hakkı (İslâm Felsefesi Müderrisi), Ârif (Tarih-i Osmanî Müderrisi), Faik Sabri (Duran), (İslâm ve Türk Coğrafyası Müderrisi), Avram Galanti (Akvâm-ı Kadime-i Şarkiyye Tarihi Muallimi), Ali Ekrem (Nazariyat-ı Edebiye Müderrisi).2 Türkoloji denen geniş çalışma ve araştırma sahasının önemli isimleri olan bu hocalardan başka Carl Brockelman, G. Bergstrasser, T. Lefevr, Ernest Chaput, Franz Babinger, Gustave Lanson gibi yabancı Türkolog ve filologların da pek çok makalesi de telif veya tercüme yoluyla Mecmua’da yerini bulur. Söz konusu yıllarda Osmanlı Devleti’nin Almanya İmparatorluğu ile sadece askerî ittifakı değil, ticarî, sınaî, ilmî alanlardaki işbirliği Dârülfünun, dolayısıyla Mecmuadaki Alman hocaların varlığını izaha kâfidir. Savaşın sonuna doğru yani 1917’de yayınına ara verilen ve Millî Mücadele’nin zaferle sonuçlanmasının hemen ardından neşrine devam edilen Mecmua, 1933 Üniversite Reformuna kadar yayınını sürdürecektir. Çok ciddî maddi sıkıntıların yaşandığı 1922 yılında, Mecmuanın yeniden hayata dönmesi, döndürülmesi bu yayın faaliyetine atfedilen önem hakkında çok fikir vericidir. Hakikaten Dârülfünun Edebiyat Fakültesi Mecmuası, Türkiye’de dil, edebiyat, dilbilimi, felsefe, sosyoloji, psikoloji, ilahiyat ve coğrafya gibi alanlarda ilk ilmî, ciddî, sistemli neşirlerin yapıldığı, sonraki yıllarda daima bir başvuru kaynağı olan bir yayın faaliyeti olmuştur. “Türkolojinin Babası” olarak anılan Ord. Prof. M. Fuad Köprülü’nün Türk dili, edebiyatı, tarihi, inanç sistemi gibi konularda yazmış olduğu makalelerin 11’nin evvela bu mecmuda yayımlanmış olduğunu belirtmek herhâlde kastımızı ifadeye yardımcı olacaktır. Sadece Köprülü’nün etütleri değil, bu mecmuada neşredilmiş araştırma, tenkit, tanıtma vs türlerindeki pek çok makale, bugünün nesillerinin istifadesi için farklı zamanlarda muhtelif alanlardaki akademisyenler tarafından yeni yazıya aktarılmıştır. Bununla beraber bu muazzam ilim hazinesindeki yazıların pek çoğu da araştırmacılardan aynı gayret ve hizmeti beklemektedir. Sosyal Bilimler alanında çalışanlar için Osmanlı Türkçesiyle yazılmış metinleri okumak, okuyabilmek bir ayrıcalık ve bu tür metinlerin yeni harflerle neşri onlar için bir ihtiyaç değilse de yine bu sahalara mensup olan ama formasyonu gereği ya da çeşitli sebeplerle eski yazı okuyamayan pek çok araştırmacı için bu ve benzeri mecmua ve kitapların günümüz alfabesiyle neşri bir zarurettir. Elinizdeki kitap işte bu tür bir endişeden doğmuş ve böylesi bir ihtiyacı kısmen de olsa gidermek maksadıyla neşre hazırlanmıştır. “Kısmen” diyoruz zira ideal olan, elbette Mecmuadaki yazıların tümünün Latin alfabesiyle yayımlanması ve dilimizi, edebiyatımızı, tarihimizi, coğrafyamızı, düşünce ve inanç sistemimizi kendisine mesele edinen herkesin istifadesine sunulmasıdır. Biz, Edebiyat Fakültesi’nin kuruluşunun 150. yıldönümüne armağan olarak düşündüğümüz bu kitaba, görsellerle zenginleştirilmiş 16 adet yazıyı alabildik. Kitapta hangi yazıya, niçin yer verildiği konusuna gelince: 49 sayıda toplam 244 makalenin neşredildiği4 Dârülfünun Edebiyat Fakültesi Mecmuası’nda çıkmış bütün makaleler önemli ve değerlidir. Dolayısıyla sınırlı sayıda metne yer verilebilecek bu kitapta hangi yazının yer alacağına karar vermek kolay olmamıştır. Bununla beraber seçimi kolaylaştıracak bazı ölçütlerimiz vardı. Şöyle ki: Mecmua, Dârülfünun Edebiyat Şubesi’ne ait olduğu için, Şubenin değişik disiplinlerinde hocalığı bulunan isimlere öncelik verildi. Ayrıca Mecmuada çok sayıda ecnebi bilim insanının telif veya tercüme yazısının bulunması, belli oranda bu yazarlara da yer vermeyi gerektiriyordu. Seçimi kolaylaştıran diğer bir unsur ise Mecmuada neşredilen makalelerin alanlara göre sayısı ve oranıydı. Bu anlamda Türk Dili, Doğu Dilleri, Batı Dilleri, dilbilimi, tarih, edebiyat, bilim tarihi, İslâm felsefesi, estetik, coğrafya, sosyoloji, psikoloji gibi disiplinlere bu kitapta mutlaka yer ayrılmalıydı. Öyle de oldu. Kitaptaki yazıların daha önce yeni harflerle yayımlanmamış olanlardan seçilmesi, zaten mesainin başında bir ilke olarak benimsenmişti. Bununla beraber, daha önce neşredilmiş olmak, bir yazının kitaba girmesine mâni de olmadı. Zira asıl gaye, Mecmuanın içerik bakımından zenginliğini, öncülüğünü, dolayısıyla kıymetini aksettirmek ve günümüze taşımaktı. Kitaptaki bazı yazılar, doğrudan editörlerin tercihi doğrultusunda belirlendi. Bazı yazılar da alanın uzmanları ya da yazıları yeni harflere aktaran hocalarımızın, meslektaşlarımızın tercih ve tespitine bırakıldı. Bu 16 yazının ikisinin Farâbî ile ilgili olması yani M. Şemseddin Günaltay’ın Farabî ile ilgili birbirini takip eden iki yazısının kitaba derç edilmesi de UNESCO’nun 2020 yılını Farâbî yılı olarak belirlemesiyle ilgilidir ve bu büyük Türk-İslâm filozofunun hatırasını yâda vesile olması maksadıyladır. Görüleceği gibi kitapta yer alan bu 16 yazının tamamı, hâlihazırda Edebiyat Fakültesi’nin değişik programlarında görev yapan akademisyenler tarafından Latin harflerine aktarılmıştır. Description: "Scientists, engineers, and a free-choice society is a book about control, largely the governing of children and young people in Sweden and the efforts made to persuade them to choose careers—and identities—in science and technology in the period 1950–2000. It is very much part of an interdisciplinary research tradition in which perspectives taken from the history of science and education are combined with theories from the field of governmentality studies. The book begins by describing a new societal problem that confronted Sweden, like so many other Western countries, in the immediate post-war years, namely a lack of engineers and scientists. The period from the outbreak of the Second World War to the mid fifties saw a new appreciation for scientific research and its application in both the military and civilian sectors. With the reconstruction of Europe and the Marshall Plan at its height in the fifties, technology and science became gradually associated with rising industrial productivity and with economic growth in general. By the sixties this had left national employment policy with some markedly pronounced objectives. By the end of the decade, it was obvious that the determination to increase student numbers in science and engineering ran contrary to other political ambitions, and did not sit well with the right of the individual to freedom of choice in education. The attempt to respect people’s autonomy while at the same time enabling more of them study these particular disciplines shaped a distinct set of strategies that made up the ‘positive exercise of power’—what might also be called liberal governing—in which the main idea was to encourage students to come to science and engineering of their own free will. The book goes on to demonstrate how this strategy of governing through individual autonomy would result in a series of specific measures in the seventies and on, including changes to the curricula and teaching materials, which were matched by activities outside the traditional bounds of learning such as a travelling science shows, advertising campaigns, and the construction of science and technology centres. The book also spells out the sheer reach of this recruitment policy. Many leading figures in Sweden set out to encourage people to become scientists and engineers—these were voices heard not only from government quarters, but also from industry and special interest groups. Scientists, engineers and a free-choice society does not set out to answer the question of how best to set about attracting young people into science and technology; rather, it is concerned with how that question has been answered by others, and what impact their responses have had on power relations between society and the individual, and indeed on the place of science and engineering education in the present.

Description: Naturvetarna, ingenjörerna och valfrihetens samhälle handlar om styrning av framförallt barn och ungdomar i Sverige till att välja naturvetenskap och teknik som utbildning, yrke och identitet mellan åren 1950–2000. Ämnesmässigt befinner sig texten i en tvärvetenskaplig forskningstradition där perspektiv från vetenskapshistoria och utbildningshistoria används tillsammans med teoretisk inspiration från fältet governmentality studies. I boken beskrivs inledningsvis framväxten av en ny samhällelig problembild i Sverige och övriga västvärlden under tidig efterkrigstid, nämligen bristen på ingenjörer och naturvetare. Den period som sträckte sig från andra världskriget krigets utbrott till 1950-­?talets mitt hade sett en ny värdering av vetenskaplig forskning och tillämpning, både från de militära och civila delarna av samhället. I samband med återuppbyggnaden av Europa och den pågående Marshallhjälpen sammankopplades teknik och naturvetenskap alltmer med ökad industriell produktivitet men också med ekonomisk tillväxt. Ovanstående utveckling ledde under 1960-­?talet till att rekryteringspolitiska målsättningar uttalades allt starkare. I slutet av decenniet blev det uppenbart att viljan att höja antalet studerande i teknik och naturvetenskap kom att kollidera med andra utbildningspolitiska ambitioner, framförallt den om individens rätt till ett fritt val av utbildning. I försöken att på samma gång respektera detta självbestämmande och samtidigt skapa fler studerande inom de ovan nämnda disciplinerna växte strategier fram i formen av ett slags ”positiv maktutövning” – vad som också kallas liberalt styre – där den bärande idén var att förmå elever att söka sig till naturvetenskap och teknik av sin egen fria vilja. Boken ger fortsättningsvis prov på hur denna strategi att styra genom individens autonomi frambringade en rad olika specifika påverkanssåtgärder från 1970-­?talet och framåt. Bland dessa återfinns förändrade kursplaner och läromedel, men också insatser utanför den traditionella läromiljön, såsom kringresande vetenskapsshower, reklamkampanjer och uppförandet av teknik-­? och vetenskapscentra. Vad som också framträder i boken är rekryteringspolitikens bredd. Många aktörer i samhället verkade för fler naturvetare och ingenjörer – inte endast på myndighetsnivå utan även inom näringsliv och bland enskilda intresseorganisationer. Naturvetarna, ingenjörerna och valfrihetens samhälle ger inga svar inte på hur fler ungdomar skall förmås bli intresserade av naturvetenskap och teknik. Snarare handlar boken om hur den frågan besvarats av andra och vilka konsekvenser detta har fått för uppkomsten av nya maktrelationer mellan samhälle och individ, men också för de naturvetenskapliga och tekniska utbildningarnas positioner i samtiden."

O leitor encontrará ao longo da obra análises muito diversificadas das maneiras de entender o corpo feminino. Na verdade, diversas maneiras de alimentar, embelezar, cuidar, criticar e promover realidades plurais em contextos diversificados de Portugal e Brasil.

Muito se tem escrito sobre a família rural, mas a antropologia não deve parar às portas da cidade. Como exemplo, o autor penetra num campo até agora largamente deixado ao abandono: as práticas familiares da burguesia.

O segundo apresenta o conceito de regime demográfico e mostra como a dinâmica das populações antigas reflecte as funções demográficas da família e, por conseguinte, os factores socioeconómicos que lhe servem de enquadramento. Os dois capítulos seguintes, que analisam em profundidade duas variáveis chave de qualquer regime demográfico, constituem uma primeira aproximação, numa perspectiva malthusiana, à complexidade e especificidade do caso português. O terceiro identifica os padrões de nupcialidade observáveis em Portugal continental durante a segunda metade do século XIX. Para além de constituir uma contribuição original para a metodologia da demografia histórica, o ensaio constitui um ponto de partida para investigações mais aprofundadas e localizadas sobre a articulação interna dos regimes demográficos. O quarto, por sua vez, propõe-se analisar o sistema familiar português em meados do século XX, descrevendo a sua configuração regional com base numa reelaboração dos dados do Censo de 1960 e identificando os principais factores subjacentes à variação nas estruturas familiares: o grau de subordinação do tecido económico à lógica de mercado e a medida em que essa subordinação permite a estruturação das relações sociais e familiares em torno da lógica da casa. A principal novidade deste capítulo reside no facto de apresentar, pela primeira vez, um quadro pormenorizado e de conjunto do sistema familiar português e da sua evolução no tempo, abrindo caminho para investigações mais aprofundadas e localizadas sobre a estruturação do sistema familiar e sobre as suas relações com o contexto socioeconómico. O post-scriptum, por fim, retoma a temática central do livro, relacionando-a, quer com investigações mais recentes que a situam num âmbito comparativo euro-asiático, quer com a tradição malthusiana na qual se insere, e propõe uma nova e mais ampla formulação teórica do conceito de regime demográfico.

Description: When Anna Johanna Grill travelled from Sweden to England in 1788, she was impressed by the vast array of consumer goods in shops. In her travel diary, she writes how the shopkeepers displayed goods in myriad of ways that fooled people into shopping. How did shops look like in Anna Johanna Grill’s hometown Stockholm in the eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century? Were there distinctive shopping streets? Who sold goods, who shopped them and what goods were available? How were goods displayed in shops and marketed? How households act in organising their purchases and consumption? From a microhistorical case studies, this richly illustrated anthology widens the perspective to social, economic and cultural practices in everyday urban life. The chapters demonstrate how shopping streets and shops with their range of silk fabrics, accessories, fashion plates, blacksmithing, wigs and hair pomades not only met the desires of consumers, but also enabled dreams of novel identities and social accession for themselves and their families.

Description: O fenômeno dekassegui tem se destacado no Brasil pelo expressivo contingente de descendentes de japoneses que se desloca para o Japão, em busca de trabalho e de uma poupança financeira, e retorna novamente. Muitos refazem esse ciclo mais de uma vez, em sucessivas idas e vindas, caracterizando um movimento pendular. Esse livro, derivado de uma dissertação de mestrado, aborda a experiência de retorno ao Brasil, do migrante dekassegui, particularmente dos filhos desses migrantes, que acompanharam seus pais nessa saga migratória, ainda pequenos, alguns tendo nascidos no Japão. São relatados e analisados casos de crianças e adolescentes, destacando-se suas dificuldades e desafios no processo de integração ou de reintegração à cultura brasileira, que emergem principalmente no contato deles com o ambiente escolar. O desamparo psíquico no processo de adaptação/readaptação dos filhos de dekasseguis na chegada ao Brasil pôde ser identificado nas crianças e também nos próprios pais dekasseguis. Os pais sentem-se desamparados antes mesmo de retornarem para o Brasil. São inúmeras as dificuldades da família dekassegui na chegada ao Brasil, potencializadas por um sentimento de estranhamento do ambiente que antes era bastante familiar e de um estranhamento de si mesmo. Além disso, os pais se defrontam com a questão da identidade cultural de seus filhos, fortemente enraizada na cultura japonesa, o que não se tornava tão evidente quando viviam no Japão. A língua será o principal indicador das raízes mais profundas da identidade cultural dos filhos e o desafio maior a ser enfrentado. Também o fator idade, o tempo de permanência no exterior e o grau de escolaridade em que essas crianças se encontram no ato da imigração acabam contribuindo para as dificuldades de adaptação/readaptação à escola. No entanto, apesar de muitas dificuldades e desafios a serem enfrentados, os dekasseguis e seus filhos trazem consigo, no retorno, um capital cultural inestimável que precisa ser valorizado e aproveitado.

İstanbul Üniversitesi’nde sunulan eğitimin her unsurunun arkasında asırlık bilgi ve birikim bulunmaktadır. Description: It is well known that Sweden once had a state institute for racial biology, as well as that extensive racial research was conducted in Sweden during the first decades of the 20th century. But what actually happened to Swedish race research after the 1930s - did it just disappear? In The science that disappeared? historian Martin Ericsson conducts the first systematic survey of Swedish race research from the mid-1930s to the early 1970s. It is a story of a racial science that survived the horrors of World War II and endured longer than we might like to believe as criticism grew in the post-war period. And about the Norwegian Institute for Racial Biology, which was never shut down, but lived on in a different form and under a different name. Ericsson shows that there was not a single Swedish racial research tradition, but two. One was based on the first director of the Institute of Racial Biology, Herman Lundborg, and had clear connections to Nazism and other extreme right-wing movements. The second can be said to be based on Lundborg's successor Gunnar Dahlberg and was instead anti-Nazi and in some cases even anti-racist. But both traditions agreed that there were different human races and that it made sense to try to measure differences between them. By following the Swedish race research until the end of the 20th century, the book also raises important questions about our own time and its interest in ""origin"" and ""descent"". How fundamentally different are today's dna analyzes from the old racial research traditions? What if we risk asking the same questions as 1930s racial biology stuck with new techniques?

Description: "In inter-war Sweden, the psychiatric diagnosis of psychopathy served as a controversial but powerful tool for the management of people who failed to live up to contemporary civic ideals. The diagnosis was based on theories of a broad spectrum of biologically-based disorders in the borderland between normality and actual mental illness. The disturbances were assumed to manifest themselves as, for example, homosexuality, hysterical attacks, emotional coldness, mythomania, or restlessness. Another controversial diagnosis was paranoia querulans or querulous paranoia, a disease that was linked to the emergence of the modern state and its rule of law, and thought to manifest itself mainly in hyperbolic complaints against supposed wrongdoings. Thus, the disorder implicated an excessive use of one's civil rights. A particular dilemma related to this disease was that the kind of behaviour that had usually led to the diagnosis and subsequent psychiatric confinement, namely a ardent manner of writing letters to public authorities, was precisely what was required for discharge. In De samhällsbesvärliga (The Social Troublemakers), historian of science and ideas Annika Berg examines how patients described as psychopaths or querulants could negotiate for discharge with doctors and authorities in 1930s and 40s Sweden. This was a period in time when the system of psychiatric care in Sweden was greatly expanded in answer to a perceived shortage, but was also transformed into a somewhat more open apparatus with possibilities to apply for preliminary discharge and other forms of outpatient solutions. It was also a time when psychiatry was under attack from different quarters, and psychiatrists were accused of using flexible diagnoses such as psychopathy to confine people wrongly. Against this backdrop, how did the management of psychopaths and querulants fit with contemporary ideals of citizenship and democracy? How did the patients view themselves? And how were negotiations in individual cases affected by notions of, for example, class, gender and sexuality?"

Description: The name Dârülfünûn was given to the university with a system similar to that of European models that was to be founded in the Ottoman Empire. This idea was introduced for the first time at the beginning of the Tanzimat, a period that can be considered the impetus for Ottoman modernization. In 1846, Board of General Education (Meclis-i Maarif-i Umûmiye) made the decision to set up a university, with Gaspare Trajano Fossati, a prominent architect of the time, being asked to design a massive building akin to European universities. The 1846 decision could not be implemented until 1863, and the first attempt at Dârülfünûn ended after two and a half years of free courses (serbest dersler). Afterward, the university building was allotted to the Ministry of Finance. The second attempt took place between 1869 and 1872 in the building that is now known as the Press Museum in Istanbul’s Çemberlitaş District, which had been built especially for Dârülfünûn. This second attempt also did not last long. However, the implementation of the General Education Regulations (Maarif-i Umûmiye Nizâmnâmesi) for the first time and the structuring of primary and secondary education in the following years in accordance with the aims of this regulation are included among the successful features of the second attempt. In fact, the fruits of this second attempt would be realized during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II (r. 1876-1909). In 1874- 1875, the third attempt occurred to found a university, this time under the name Dârülfünûn-ı Sultanî. For the first time, students at this new university, which included the Faculties of Law, Engineering, and Literature, were entitled to write a PhD dissertation in their field. Political instability generated by the period’s economic and social realities, as well as international pressure on the state, prevented this third attempt from producing the desired results. Nonetheless, while the expected outcome was yet to be realized, this third attempt paved the way for the establishment of independent educational institutions (i.e., modern schools). In 1900 and coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdülhamid II’s accession to the throne, the idea of establishing a university again came to the agenda, and the first university of the Ottoman Empire, Dârülfünûn-ı Şâhâne, finally began its uninterrupted education and training with five faculties: the Faculties of Literature, Science, and Ulûm-ı Âliye-i Dîniyye [Theology] and the previously established Faculties of Medicine and Law.

Description: "The core of the book is a complete annotated translation of the collected ‘religious poetry’ (Tibetan: mgur) of the Tibetan yogin Tsangnyön Heruka (gTsang smyon Heruka, 1452–1507). The book also contains a translation of a short ‘catalogue’ (dkar chag) of Tsangnyön’s poetry/songs. These two texts were compiled and printed in 1508 by a group of disciples who wanted to express their devotion to their recently deceased master, and make his insights available for others. The Songs of Tsangnyön Heruka begins with an extensive scholarly introduction to Tsangnyön and his songs, providing the reader with a context to the translations. Following the two translated texts, is an appendix introducing Tibetan Buddhism to the general reader, then comes a glossary explaining some of the key terms used in the songs, and finally some back matters, i.e. end notes and bibliographies. Nowadays, Tsangnyön Heruka is mainly known for having written and printed the ‘life story’ (rnam thar) and ‘song collection’ (mgur ’bum) of the famous poet-saint Milarepa (1040–1123). However, Tsangnyön is not only one of Tibet’s foremost authors and poets, he is also one of the best known ‘holy madmen’ (smyon pa) of Tibet. These colourful figures challenged powerful leaders and monks with their peculiar and seemingly crazy ways. In sharp contrast to Milarepa’s life story and songs, Tsangnyön’s were gradually forgotten. Tsangnyön’s songs provide us with a fascinating and direct insight into the lifestyle, teachings, and message of the wandering yogins. Moreover, they give us an idea of how it was in Tibet before the Fifth Dalai Lama came to power in the mid-17th century. However, the songs have a direct, down-to-earth, and human message, making them timeless and relevant also for people living in another time and culture. These songs have never been translated to any language, and they have never been studied thoroughly before."

Description: Within the scope of the events of the 2019 Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Year, under the auspices of our Presidency and with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in partnership with Istanbul University, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University, and the Fuat Sezgin Islamic Science History Research Foundation, we had the honor of hosting the first International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposium of Islamic History of Science on 13-15 June at Istanbul University. Our late Professor Fuat Sezgin, who questioned and evaluated the role of Islamic civilization in the development of sciences with a scientific attitude instead of taking a reactionary defensive stance against the views that limit the role of Islamic civilization in its contribution to inter-civilizational transfer only in certain historical periods, earned an unforgettable place in the history of Islamic science while he was still alive with the dozens of works he published with his commentary, hundreds of volumes of books he uncovered, nearly a thousand scientific tools he unearthed, the scientific institutions he pioneered, and the scientists he inspired. By remembering our late Professor Fuat Sezgin, who, despite all the obstacles and difficulties he faced, faithfully and patiently devoted his entire life to showing the place of the sciences developed in the Islamic world in the international history of science, and especially to objectively revealing the role of Islamic sciences in the development of the history of Western science, we hope to be able to make a modest contribution in terms of passing his scientific legacy on to future generations. The symposium we held to honor the legacy of Fuat Sezgin by remembering the works he carried out during his lifetime and to express our gratitude to him was attended by nearly 100 worthy academicians in the field of the history of science from 21 different countries, and this legacy left behind by our late Professor was honored with a total of 79 papers presented over three days. Prepared as a tangible fruit of the symposium and a permanent expression of our gratitude to our late Professor, this proceedings book has been created with the contributions of the esteemed academicians who participated in the symposium. It consists of an introduction section of three articles written on the life and works of our late Professor, and 38 articles in English, Arabic, and Turkish categorized under the titles of Fuat Sezgin’s Contributions to the History of Science, Astronomy, Mathematics, Medicine, Geography, Natural Sciences, and Islamic Studies. Hoping that this proceedings book we have published will have an important place in the history of Islamic Science literature and make a significant contribution to the field with the belief that it will open the horizons of young researchers, we are grateful to have the opportunity to thank the individuals and institutions for their support in organizing this important event and the preparation of this proceedings book. İslam medeniyetinin bilimlerin gelişimindeki rolünü, sadece belirli tarihi dönemlerde medeniyetler arası aktarımdaki katkısı ile sınırlandıran görüşler karşısında tepkisel bir savunmacı tutum takınmak yerine ilmi bir tavırla sorgulama ve değerlendirmelerde bulunan merhum Fuat Sezgin Hocamız, tenkitli neşrini yaptığı onlarca eser, tıpkıbasımını yaptığı yüzlerce cilt kitap, gün yüzüne çıkardığı bine yakın bilimsel âlet, kuruluşuna öncülük ettiği bilimsel kurumlar ve ilham verdiği bilim insanları ile İslam bilim tarihinin sayfalarında henüz hayattayken unutulmaz bir yer edinmiştir. Sempozyumumuz aracılığıyla tüm yaşamını, karşılaşmış olduğu tüm engellere ve zorluklara rağmen, inançla ve sabırla durmaksızın İslam dünyasında gelişen bilimlerin dünya bilim tarihindeki yerini göstermeye, özellikle de Batı bilim tarihinin gelişiminde İslam bilimlerinin rolünü nesnel bir biçimde ortaya koymaya adayan merhum Fuat Sezgin Hocamızın ilmî mirasını hatırlayıp onu gelecek nesillere aktarma noktasında mütevazı bir katkı sağlayabilmiş olabilmeyi umut ediyoruz. Fuat Sezgin Hocamızın bu mirasını ve de hayatta iken yürütmüş olduğu çalışmaları onurlandırmak ve kendisine karşı minnetimizi ifade etmek üzere gerçekleştirdiğimiz sempozyuma, 21 farklı ülkeden bilim tarihi alanında çalışmalar yürüten 100’e yakın değerli akademisyen katılmış ve üç gün boyunca merhum hocamızın geride bıraktığı bu miras sunulan toplam 79 bildiri ile onurlandırılmıştır. Description: A folclorização é um fenómeno cultural da modernidade. Operando com as noções de folclorismo e de folclorização, a presente obra pretende equacionar os parâmetros de um processo que conduziu à mobilização e integração das populações rurais na nação. Description: Este livro se propõe a examinar as relações da agricultura familiar com a emergência e a consolidação das atividades não-agrícolas no espaço rural e a formação de unidades produtivas crescentemente identificadas com a pluriatividade das famílias rurais. Neste sentido, agrega-se, às pesquisas que vêm sendo realizadas para aprofundar os conhecimentos sobre a agricultura familiar e suas possibilidades de desenvolvimento social e econômico no espaço rural. Nos anos recentes, vários cientistas sociais vêm dedicando seus estudos e análises às formas familiares. Esse trabalho intelectual tem sido desenvolvido sob variados focos, podendo-se extrair pelos menos dois ensinamentos. O primeiro indica a existência de diferentes estratégias sociais e econômicas através das quais as populações, grupos e indivíduos identificados com a agricultura familiar vêm viabilizando sua reprodução social e sobrevivência econômica nas sociedades contemporâneas. Os temas analisados indicam que uma sociologia das conflitualidades, no tempo atual, deve ser situada no contexto dos efeitos do processo de mundialização da sociedade e da economia, os quais produzem transformações na estrutura e no espaço social das diversas regiões do planeta, desencadeando novos conflitos sociais e novas formas de conflitualidades. A questão das conflitualidades, das formas de violência, das metamorfoses do crime, da crise das instituições de controle social configura-se pela emergência de lutas sociais protagonizadas por outros agentes sociais com diversas identidades oponentes e pautas de reivindicações. Ainda mais, o aumento dos processos estruturais de exclusão social pode vir a gerar a expansão das práticas de violência como norma social particular, vigente em vários grupos sociais enquanto estratégia de resolução de conflitos, ou meio de aquisição de bens materiais e de obtenção de prestígio social, significados esses presentes em múltiplas dimensões da violência social e política contemporânea. Description: "Riksäpplet deals with a shipwreck that has a neglected position in the grand narrative of the history of the Swedish navy. The story of its destiny and the missing accounts in scholarly and popular works in history says something about heritage processes within Swedish maritime archaeology. On 5 June 1676 Riksäpplet came loose and adrift from its moorings outside Dalarö Sea fortress. The hull struck a rock and sank. The loss was considered both ignominious and embarrassing and the ship’s fate has been overlooked in all major history books. The rock onto which Riksäpplet sank was named ‘Äpplet’ after the incident, and the wreck itself has become an integrated component of the underwater seascape. As a consequence the wreckage has never enjoyed a proper ‘discovery’ or undergone documentation under the sensational forms that many other famous shipwrecks have, even though they have sunk in more inconvenient places. In Eriksson’s study the official handling of Riksäpplet’s wrecked body is compared to the more wellknown ships Kronan and Svärdet, which both sank during battle only days before. Eriksson draws on different motifs and driving forces behind the study of naval wrecks from the period from his comparison, and the differences are discussed. Riksäpplet has never achieved a prominent position with the romanticising works of history that honour the national heroes and their deeds which are associated with this era of the Swedish Empire. The first half of the book thus sets out to unpack the ideas that have led to the relative disinterest in Riksäpplet in comparison to other shipwrecks. The second half of the book sets out to analyse Riksäpplet from a specific archaeological perspective, with focus on the ship as material culture. Eriksson’s departure is to explore the relatively low budget fieldwork that has been done at the wreck site. He the combines those facts with a survey of the artefacts recovered from the wreck, of which all are kept in museum archives and private collections. This, in addition to his studies of preserved written correspondence concerning the construction of the ship, has brought new insights into seventeenth-century shipbuilding and how the balance between the global political superpowers affected this trade. In this context Riksäpplet has great potential to show how military alliances are materialized through ships’ architecture.

Men boken handlar också om ett skeppsvrak som hamnat en hårsmån utanför den stora vedertagna sjökrigshistoriska berättelsen: regalskeppet Riksäpplet. Den 5 juni 1676 slet sig Riksäpplet från förtöjningarna vid Dalarö skans. Skrovet högg i en klippa och sjönk. Förlisningen kom att betraktas som både snöplig och pinsam och har i efterhand kommit att förtigas i historieböckerna. Klippan bär idag namnet Äpplet och vraket har kommit att bli en integrerad och självklar del av landskapet. Boken första hälft syftar till att synliggöra de mekanismer och drivkrafter som ligger bakom att Riksäpplet prioriterats bort till förmån för undersökningar av andra vrak. Bokens andra hälft ägnas åt att fokusera på ett nytt, mer renodlat arkeologiskt perspektiv på skeppet som materiell kultur. Erikssons utgångspunkt är ett till resurserna tämligen begränsat arkeologiskt fältarbete på vrakplatsen som ändå har genererat stora resultat. Han kombinerar detta med en genomgång av de föremål som genom åren har bärgats från vraket och som finns arkiverade i olika museimagasin och hos privata samlare. Tillsammans med bevarad skriftlig korrespondens kring skeppets byggande väcks nya insikter om 1600-talets skeppsbyggeri och hur detta kunde påverkas av den globala politiska maktbalansen över världshaven. Satt i en sådan kontext har Riksäpplet stor potential att visa hur stormaktens militärallianser materialiserades genom skeppens arkitektur. "

Description: Raul Borges Guimarães produziu esta obra pensando principalmente nos estudantes de geografia que estão em busca de informações sobre biogeografia e geografia da saúde. Mas o autor ressalva que o livro também se dirige aos profissionais de saúde que identificam essa subdisciplina como uma alternativa para enriquecer a abordagem social e ambiental dos problemas de saúde. Com tal objetivo, ele procurasintetizar os questionamentos que levanta em especialem sua dissertação de mestrado, tese de doutorado e tesede livre-docência. Resultado de 20 anos de estudos geográficos no campo da saúde coletiva, a obra remete à formação inicial do autor na área de saúde coletiva entre 1986 e 1987 no Instituto de Saúde de São Paulo. Naquela época, ele relata, a busca era pela relação entre o espaço geográfico e o processo saúde-doença. Mas os resultados do trabalho o levaram para o estudo dos equipamentos médico-hospitalares e o impacto da inovação tecnológica no trabalho do médico e a perceber, logo em seguida, o poder dos circuitos médico-hospitalares na produção da própria cidade. A constatação o transportou para o estudo da saúde urbana. Assim, Guimarães partiu “do território para a geografia inscrita no corpo do cidadão brasileiro”, especialmente daquele que vive do trabalho, para contribuir com o entendimento da saúde pública. Ele explica que esse movimento tem como base a renovação da epidemiologia (que busca caracterizar os determinantes sociais e ambientais dos problemas de saúde), a preocupação com o desenvolvimento da promoção de saúde, compreendendo o território como estratégia de ação, e a necessidade de regionalizar o sistema e os serviços e ações de saúde, entre outros fatores ligados à história recente da saúde coletiva.

Description: This study investigates the pictorial world of the medieval Vadstena Abbey church. The interior of the church was filled with altars and images that had the three separated groups of viewers in mind: the 60 nuns, the 25 conventual brothers and the numerous pilgrims coming to visit the shrine of Saint Birgitta. The pilgrims faced a pictorial message where the role of saint Birgitta was emphasized, but still one among all the other saints. The images directed to the nuns and the brothers accentuated the role of the Virgin Mary as the exemplarily follower of Christ. Furthermore, all the church interior was furnished to enhance the position of the nuns, i.e. that this monastic foundation was made primarily for women.

Description: A árdua tarefa de viver a maternidade atrás das grades é o cerne da presente obra. Mediante o desrespeito às inúmeras formas de se constituir família, premente é o debate sobre os modos de sobrevivência das famílias monoparentais femininas cuja principal responsável encontra-se privada de liberdade.  Através da experiência vivida pelas reclusas da Cadeia Pública Feminina de Franca/SP, identificamos quem são estas mulheres, como vivem e onde e com quem estão seus filhos, evidenciando, assim, a sobrecarga de responsabilidades imposta às mães devido à irrefutável desigualdade de gênero. Com isto, visamos dar visibilidade às mulheres cujas grades da prisão cindam sua convivência familiar.

Description: Neste livro, a autora tem a coragem de lidar com um velho e novo dilema que perpassa o Serviço Social brasileiro: Como os assistentes sociais conduzem seu trabalho cotidiano? A partir de qual referencial teórico-metodológico, ético-político e técnico-operativo? Para enfrentar essas questões, a autora reivindica uma perspectiva de totalidade, a qual leva-a a se debruçar sobre as condições objetivas que incidem no trabalho profissional dos assistentes sociais, na sua formação profissional e nas respostas que oferecem no dia a dia do seu trabalho. A pesquisadora analisa como o assistente social, enquanto trabalhador assalariado, realiza seu trabalho sob determinadas condições. Para isso, considera a forma como esse trabalho se configura a partir do modo de produção capitalista (alienado, reificado), mas elucida também como os profissionais de Serviço Social, enquanto seres sociais dotados de uma teleologia, de aportes teórico-metodológicos, ético-políticos que os alicerçam (os quais deveriam ser garantidos na formação profissional), podem exercer a sua autonomia enquanto profissionais e propor um trabalho inventivo, criativo, diante das velhas e novas manifestações da questão social brasileira. Description: Através da análise do dia-a-dia das mulheres de um bairro popular numa cidade marroquina, pretende-se demonstrar como o Islão é constantemente reinterpretado e apropriado, juntamente com outros elementos culturais, na reconstrução de uma identidade feminina urdida em jogos sociais intensos - contrariando-se, assim, os habituais estereótipos da "mulher muçulmana reclusa". O argumento principal é o de que só através da observação dos contextos domésticos e informais, nos quais as mulheres tecem as suas relações sociais, é possível aceder as noções de pessoa, self e comunidade e compreender os processos pelos quais os papéis religiosos e de género são reinventados através de uma bricolage que recicla tradição e modernidade. Este argumento e sustentado etnograficamente por uma descrição do ritmo anual da vida doméstica e do bairro, bem como pelo acompanhamento de celebrações religiosas e nacionais. O levamento etnográfico estende-se dos ritos a outras performances comunicativas (como as matinées em torno da televisão e do vídeo), das muitas outras ocasiões e formas de sociabilidade (visitas, actividades quotidianas, pequenas trocas e empréstimos, participação e papéis dos parentes, amigos e vizinhos) a observância do equilíbrio delicado da decência, religiosidade e honra adequadas a cada momenta social e temporal. Este itinerário etnográfico pretende demonstrar coma as noções de pessoa e comunidade são estabilizadas e mantidas pela repetição quotidiana de gestos, cenas e fórmulas, ao mesmo tempo que os seus limites são constantemente actualizados em cada encontro com amigos, vizinhos, parentes ou antropólogos. Finalmente, argumenta-se que existem no Islão dispositivos compatíveis com a modernidade, no que respeita ao corpo e ao self entendidos coma projectos individuais e racionais, ao mesmo tempo que se demonstra coma o "regateamento da realidade", num contexto de pobreza e poupança simbólica, reinscreve as referências modernizadoras num idioma de mobilidade social. O recurso a comparações fora do contexto marroquino imediato permite situar este trabalho no âmbito mais alargado dos estudos interpretativos urbanos e sobre a globalização.

Description: No presente estudo nossa atenção voltou-se para compreender as condições objetivas e subjetivas do processo de trabalho de assistentes sociais em entidades sociais no município de Bebedouro. A ação profissional já tem sido objeto de análise em diversos estudos, porém, com menos frequência busca-se investigar as reais condições de trabalho que o Assistente Social encontra em seu cotidiano profissional. Nossa análise procura compreender o processo de trabalho do Serviço Social em entidades sociais de modo a descartar a priori, tanto a tendência fatalista que considera o espaço profissional com limites insuperáveis, como a tendência messiânica que considera o assistente social um profissional independente, com autonomia quase absoluta para desenvolver propostas transformadoras da realidade, desconsiderando a verdadeira inserção profissional na realidade concreta. As duas abordagens, tanto a fatalista como a messiânica, não relevam a historicidade social a partir da realização dos homens, as particularidades da profissão e os elementos que a singularizam em determinado momento histórico e em cada processo de trabalho. Procuramos então responder: quem são os profissionais que estão nas entidades sociais? Quais as condições objetivas e subjetivas da ação profissional nesse espaço de trabalho? O que se revela por detrás da cotidianidade, o que há de significativo para além da repetição cotidiana? Nosso universo de investigação foi constituído por todas as entidades sociais regularmente inscritas no Conselho Municipal de Assistência Social - CMAS no ano de 2008. Isso significa que as entidades sociais tinham que estar com suas obrigações em dia com o CMAS referentes ao ano de 2007, como a apresentação de relatórios das atividades realizadas e a prestação de contas junto ao órgão gestor, além de projetos para o ano de 2008.

The book's ambition is to bring the reader into the actual making and show how contextualisation is an important element in historical studies at all levels. The book thus hopes to stimulate increased reflection and discussion about how we proceed when we interpret, create or reinterpret historical, cultural and social contexts. The book firstly provides an introduction to what contextualization can be and do when we encounter the past in the form of texts, images or artifacts. From the very first day at the university, students in historical disciplines end up in such meetings. Therefore, the first four chapters of the book are primarily aimed at students in the introductory semesters. What does it really mean to analyze, synthesize, contextualize or criticize - and how do the ways of working with the past relate to each other? And further, what historical times are we working with: do we read source material from our own horizons or from those of the historical actors? Is the source material part of a long story or a short one? And who decides the answer to such questions? Secondly, the book provides an in-depth discussion of the role of contextualisation when we create new historical knowledge. The book's later chapters ask questions about how contextualisation relates to historical theory and method, and sheds light on the activity of creating, arguing for, and reconsidering the contexts that give meaning and significance to historical source material. The most central lesson the book wants to convey is that contextualization is an ongoing activity. Human horizons of understanding are constantly moving in step with contemporary knowledge interests. Description: In order to preserve the memory of the late Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin (d. 2018) and to ensure that his significant scientific legacy serves as a source of inspiration for future generations, the 1st International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposioum on the History of Science in Islam, in collaboration with Istanbul University, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University, and the Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Research Foundation for the History of Science in Islam held its inaugural conference between June 13-15, 2019. Subsequently, IU Press published 38 of the papers that had been presented at the conference. Following this, the decision was made to organize the symposium every two years, and preparations were undertaken for the 2nd International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposium on the History of Science in Islam, which was held on October 7-9, 2021 with the theme of “Methodological Approaches to the History of Science in Islam.” The study of the intellectual output from the Islamic world as an object of research has a nearly 200-year history. Despite the efforts of many international scholars to discover, understand, and interpret the history of Islamic sciences and determine its relevance for contemporary society, many aspects of the history of Islamic sciences still exist that remain to be clarified, such as the individuals, works, theories, networks of relations, contexts, and influences. Two key questions facing researchers in this field is how to approach the history of Islamic sciences using methodological tools and how to utilize perspectives from different disciplines. The 2nd International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposium on the History of Science in Islam aimed to address these issues by discussing the methodological aspects of how to research the history of Islamic sciences with a focus on the following questions: • How does the study of the history of Islamic sciences relate to the established historiography and research methods? • How can the history of Islamic sciences be periodized? Is creating a periodization that encompasses all sciences possible, or should separate periodizations be established for each individual science? • Can special methods be mentioned for studying the period following the 13th century that is commonly referred to as the post-classical period? • Has the paradigm of decline in understanding the history of Islamic sciences truly expired? • What opportunities and weaknesses do content-oriented and context-oriented approaches have in regard to analyzing scientific texts? • How should the relationship Islamic sciences have with the scientific accumulation of other civilization basins be handled? • What kind of balance should be established between continuity and originality when writing the history of scientific theories? • To what extent is the perspective presented by global history studies functional in understanding the history of Islamic sciences? • What kinds of methods and approaches should be used in teaching the history of general science at different levels, including the history of Islamic sciences? A total of 68 scholars, 41 from Turkey and 27 from other countries such as Germany, the United States of America, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Iran, Spain, Switzerland, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Syria, Tunisia, and Greece participated in 16 parallel sessions. The symposium was conducted in a hybrid format to take into account the ongoing pandemic, with 51 of the presenters having attended the symposium in person and 17 having presented their papers online. Description: The defeats and losses of lands since the last quarter of the 16th century prompted intellectuals in Muslim countries, particularly the Ottoman Empire, to look for ways of overcoming their weakness against the West. The foremost notion in the various theses developed in this context is that the problem stems from the basic values of Islam and the practices of the Prophet and his Companions. The Mamluks’ establishment of security and stability in their lands enabled the ulama, who were affected by the political turmoil in Andalusia and Anatolia, as well as central Iraq and Iran in the early 7th/13th century, to turn to the Egyptian-Sham region. In addition to the political stability they created, the Mamluks built many scientific institutions in cities such as Cairo, Damascus, Aleppo, and Jerusalem. They provided wide opportunities to scholars, making these cities the most important centers of knowledge. The rich scholarly environment in Egypt and Damascus, which attracted many scholars from various parts of the Islamic world, paved the way for the writing of many works in almost every field of Islamic sciences and the emergence of new and voluminous encyclopedic genres. Thus, an enormous amount of literature was created in fiqh, hadith, tafsīr, kalām, mysticism, philosophy, logic, qirāʾa, sīra, history, and tabāqat. The understanding and interpretation of this literature, which is the result of an unprecedented scholarly effort in Islamic history, requires the contribution of many researchers in different fields. As a result of this need, interest in the scholarly and cultural accumulation of the Mamluk period is increasing both in international academic circles and in our country. Although the number and quality of studies on the political history of the Mamluks are not yet at the desired level, some studies have been conducted in the Turkish literature. However, research on the ulama, scientific institutions, types of works, and the status of Islamic sciences during the Mamluk period is still in its infancy. To overcome this deficiency to some extent, the Institute of Islamic Studies at Istanbul University (then known as the Center for Islamic Studies at Istanbul University) organized a workshop titled Islamic Sciences in the Mamluk Period on 19-20 September 2019. Thus, it was aimed to evaluate the status of the studies on the ulama and Islamic sciences related to the Mamluk period, to propose new research topics in the areas of need, to ensure cooperation among those interested in this field, and to create a basis for future studies. At the end of this workshop, the need to organize an international meeting with wide participation in the scholarly tradition in the Mamluk period was expressed. For this purpose, an international symposium titled The Tradition of Knowledge in the Mamluk Period-I (13th and 14th Centuries) was organized on September 28-29, 2021, hosted by Istanbul University in cooperation with the Institute of Islamic Studies at Istanbul University and the Foundation for Research in Islamic Sciences (ISAV). In the symposium, many researchers made presentations on tafsīr, hadith, fiqh, historiography, philosophy, kalām, mysticism, culture-literature, ulama, and scientific institutions. This book was formed by revising some of the papers presented at the symposium during the publication phase. The full text of the relevant papers has been reviewed and turned into articles. The thematically re-planned book consists of seven chapters: Qurʾānic Sciences and Tafsīr, Fiqh Thought and Literature, Hanafi Fiqh and Hadith Studies, Kalām, History and Sīra Writing, Language and Literature, Scientific Institutions and Ulama. Bu vesileyle İslâm dünyasının çeşitli bölgelerinden çok sayıda âlimin yöneldiği Mısır ve Şam şehirlerinde oluşan zengin ilmî ortam, İslâmî ilimlerin hemen her sahasında pek çok eserin kaleme alınmasına, aynı zamanda yeni ve hacimli ansiklopedik tarzda telif türlerinin ortaya çıkmasına zemin hazırlamıştır. Böylece fıkıh, hadis, tefsir, kelâm, tasavvuf, felsefe, mantık, kıraat, siyer, tarih ve tabakat ilimlerinde muazzam bir literatür oluşmuştur. İslâm tarihinde eşine az rastlanan bir ilmî mesainin sonucu olarak ortaya konan bu literatürün anlaşılması ve yorumlanması farklı alanlarda pek çok araştırmacının katkısına ihtiyaç duymaktadır. Bu ihtiyacın bir sonucu olarak Memlükler dönemindeki ilmî ve kültürel birikime yönelik ilgi gerek uluslararası akademik çevrelerde gerekse ülkemizde giderek artmaktadır. Memlüklerin siyasi tarihine dair sayısı ve niteliği henüz arzulanan seviyede olmamakla birlikte Türkçe literatürde bazı çalışmalar yapılmıştır. Ancak Memlükler döneminde ulema, ilim kurumları, telif eser türleri ve İslâmî ilimlerin durumu hakkındaki araştırmalar henüz başlangıç düzeyindedir. Bu konudaki eksikliğin bir nebze dahi olsa giderilmesi amacıyla İstanbul Üniversitesi İslâm Tetkikleri Enstitüsü (o zamanki ismiyle İstanbul Üniversitesi İslam Araştırmaları Uygulama ve Araştırma Merkezi) tarafından 19-20 Eylül 2019 tarihlerinde Memlükler Döneminde İslâmî İlimler adıyla bir çalıştay düzenlenmiştir. These questions were explored through stories about girls’ upbringing and education in nineteenth and early twentieth century literature for girls. About the time of the breakthrough of women novelists in the 1830s, books for girls started to be published. They depict everyday games and exhilarating adventures, student life and vocational dreams. By addressing girls directly, these books aimed at both discussing and influencing future female citizens. In Future Women, Maria Andersson shows how Swedish literature for girls and its depiction of young women was a part of the nineteenth century debate on women’s civil and political rights. The genre gathered authors of different political convictions but they were all united by the fact that young women became the focal point of contemporary social changes in their works. Housewifely girls, manly women students and shopping coquettes illustrated different paths to adulthood and modern life. In the girl book genre, the young woman was simultaneously a vehicle of nostalgic memories from a lost world and the promise of a more equal, peaceful future.

Description: İstanbul Üniversitesi Yayınları’nın çağrısı üzerine hazırladığımız ve Cumhuriyetin 100.yılına armağan etmek istediğimiz bu küçük çalışmamızı hatırat, anılar ve bu alandaki yazınla ilgilenen meslektaşlarımızın ve meraklı okurların ilgisine sunuyoruz. Toplumsal hafıza ve hafızanın üretimi, siyaseti üzerine düşünürken geç Osmanlı ve Cumhuriyet dönemi anılarını uzun zamandır okuyor ve bu konu üzerinde çalışıyorduk. Bu kapsamda çeşitli alanlara yayılmış anıları inceledik: erkekler ve kadınlar tarafından kaleme alınmış, farklı toplumsal grupların deneyimlerini yansıtan anıların yanı sıra tematik olarak da İstanbul, belirli siyasal olaylar ve meslek gruplarının anılarını eleştirel bir gözle okuduk, tartıştık. Toplumsal hiyerarşinin en üstünde yer alan kişilerin, devlet adamı, asker, diplomat, siyasetçi ve edebiyatçı anılarının yanı sıra farklı toplumsal sınıflara mensup insanların anılarını okurken farklı din, dil ve etnik gruplardan kişilerin kendilerini nasıl ifade ettiğini izlemeye çalıştık. Bu küçük çalışmamızda öncelikle hatırat/anı türünü, yaşam öyküsü anlatılarını tarihsel geçmiş, erken ve modern örnekler, batı ve batı dışı ülkelerdeki ilgili yazın ışığında gözden geçirdik. Cumhuriyet Türkiye’sini, dönemler, gelişmeler ve sorunlarını, öne çıkan temaları, tartışma ve modaları, değişen mekânı geç Osmanlı döneminden başlayarak anılar yardımıyla bir kez daha okuyabileceğimizi hatırlatmak istedik. Geç Osmanlı dönemi derken 1908 ve sonrasını esas almak, Büyük Savaş ve Cumhuriyetin kuruluşunu, İstanbul, İzmir ve Ankara’da yaşayan ve anıları yayınlanmış aydınlar, sanatçı ve siyasetçiler, gazeteciler, anılarını kaleme almış sıradan insanların gözünden izlemek bize önemli ve öğretici geliyor. Bu insanların kişisel ve grupsal anlatıları, aile deneyimleri bize tarihi daha insani, daha içeriden, yaşayanların tecrübesiyle ete kemiğe büründürüyor, daha anlaşılır kılıyor. Bunu en iyi yapabileceğimiz aracın kişilerin yaşam öyküsü anlatıları ve anıları olduğunu düşünüyoruz. Anılarını yazanların aile öykülerinden başlayarak geçmişlerini nasıl ele aldıkları, dönemleri ve deneyimlerini nasıl değerlendirdikleri, yorumladıkları tarih ve siyaset açısından kıymeti çoğu kez bilinmeyen bir önem ve değer taşıyor. Elbette anıları bir tarihsel belge olarak kullanmak, gerçekliğe referans olarak bakmak çeşitli sorunlar taşıyor. Bilimsel tarih çalışmaları ile hafıza, anılar ve anlatılar arasında gidip gelen, edebi türlere yakın duran, bireysel, düşünsel farklılıklar, kırılmalar, tercihler ve yorum farklılıkları içeren bir tür, yaşam öyküsü anlatıları. Çalışmamızın amaçları arasında tarih yazımı ile bu türden kişisel anlatıların, hayat öyküleri ve anıların niteliği üzerine düşünmek ve çalışmak da yer aldı. Bu anlamda yöntem üzerine de düşündük ve bu konuya da çalışmamızda değindik. Tüm eksiklikleri, görüş ve deneyim farklılıkları ve yazılış amaçlarına bağlı olarak kırılmış merceklerden bakış açılarına karşın anıların ülkemizin yakın tarihine, Cumhuriyet tarihine ışık tutacak nitelikte ve canlılıkta olduklarını düşüncesiyle tarihi bir de yaşayanların gözünden, onlar açısından, gerçek insanların deneyimleri ışığında düşünmek ve tartışmakta yarar olduğunu iddia ediyoruz. Çalışmamızın özgün yanlarından en önemlisi bu konuda bir bibliyografya hazırlamış olmamız. Bibliyografya çalışmasının bu alanda araştırma yapan meslektaşlarımıza, öğrencilerimize, anı okurlarına, konuyla ilgili herkese yararlı olmasını umuyoruz.

Description: There is a strong narrative on how the humanities were marginalized in postwar Sweden: in the land of engineers, technocrats and social scientists, there was no room for erudition, philosophy and history. This book challenges such a notion and shows how clearly the humanities were present in the public sphere of the time. By applying perspectives from the history of knowledge, the authors illustrate how humanists were key figures in the welfare society’s culture and politics, media and book market, education and intellectual debate. At the heart of the book is the public sphere of the 1960s and 1970s. In a first part, the authors highlight how humanists played a decisive role in the young television’s educational program as well as in the popular science paperback publishing of the time and on the essay pages in the newspapers. In a second part, attention is drawn to the humanities’ place in the Christian cultural sphere, the labour movement’s education work and the New Left’s book cafés. We meet people like Per I. Gedin, Gunnel Vallquist and Jan-Öjvind Swahn, but also TV producers, study circle organizers, translators of radical non-fiction and many others. They all helped to set humanistic knowledge in motion during the postwar decades. Against an international background, the image of a humanistic knowledge system with deep roots and wide connections in Swedish society emerges. It is about these actors and arenas of knowledge that this book is about.
