    Description: The monograph by Grzegorz Grochowski documents insightful reflection on the current state of the field of the genre order of discourse, especially literary taxonomies. These orders are seen from the perspective of various methodological orders of the last few decades, developed in the area of postmodern literary studies. The conclusions emerging from these are examined from the angle of analytical utility of selected solutions. The study is successful at depicting the current state of the debates on the theory of literature and the dynamics of phenomena observed in the field of contemporary literature. It combines an in-depth theoretical analysis with sophisticated interpretations of the texts. Therefore, it skilfully transports theoretical discussions on to a concrete level. (excerpt from a review by Prof. Teresa Dobrzyńska) The fascinating book by Grzegorz Grochowski on the postmodern literary games is also a game the researcher plays with traditional genology and the aim of creating categories other than genre and text for this literary play: those of description and understanding. Discourse analysis leads theory of literature out of the narrow backwater of literary theories. It also demonstrates that literature has a meaning not only against the backdrop of language and genological norm, that its dynamics require a return into the chaos of social life (rejected by structuralism).     Description: This three-volume book investigates the Russian transformations of one of the central concepts of Greek Christology, the self-humiliation or kenosis of Christ. The author applies rhetoric (paradox, metaphor, metonymy) as a means to elucidate mechanisms of theological persuasion and to trace the representations of the humiliated Christ and his imitations in various media from liturgy and iconology to everyday practice and literary fiction. The exploration of post-Christian literature of the 19th and 20th century (N. Chernyshevskii, M. Gor’kii, N. Ostrovskii, Ven. Erofeev, Vl. Sorokin) demonstrates the existence of a kenotic Christology after Christianity.

    Description: Paradoxality as a Specific Feature of Dostoevsky’s Literary Works. Techniques, Stylistics, Mechanisms of Action. All works by Dostoevsky reveal the presence of paradox. These paradoxes act according to mechanisms that depend either on the fictional (polyphonic) or nonfictional (monologic) text “dominant.” Taking as a starting point (a) the arguments of G.S. Morson, according to whom paradoxes “seem to carry the quintessence of ‘Dostoevskyism’, particularly of his brand of humor,” (b) the analysis of Dostoevsky’s paradoxical humor; and (c) the three main categories of paradoxes (“empty or rhetorical”, “negative”, “positive”), we argue that Dostoevsky applies a fourth type of paradox, one that affects neither the premise nor the ending of the paradoxical structure, but their intrinsic logical interconnection. This article analyses a repertoire of paradoxical techniques used by Dostoevsky, focusing on the destabilizing humoristic function they enact.

    Description: Humor and Irony as a Means of Combating Atheism in the Discourse of F.M. Dostoevsky . The question of the God’s existence troubled Dostoevsky throughout his life. He created a very convincing portrait of the atheist of his time. He did not consider unbelievers immoral, but only “infected with recklessness”, and when speaking of his atheist acquaintances, often admitted that they were good people. Dostoevsky created the image of an atheist as an intelligent person, who is guided not by the heart, but by the mind and who often evokes sympathy for his questing, his thinking, and his suffering (like Versilov or Ivan Karamazov). If we carefully consider the “atheistic” characters of Dostoevsky, however, we will see that atheism is a phenomenon associated with something both bad and funny. Through humorous details, Dostoevsky imperceptibly creates an image of the “atheist” as a comical and frivolous person.

    Description: “We laughed like from a tickle on the heart.” Dostoevsky’s Muddy Confession. When considering laughter in Dostoevsky, one immediately thinks of the long “tirade” in The Adolescent, which proposes a kind of physiology of laughter, and its unpredictable effects on the perception of those who witness it. Laughter and caustic humor color even the most intimate confessions and can serve to partially mask the difficult action of revealing oneself before others. Modernity itself is the era of self-exhibition, of a sort of widespread confession. And yet, the laughter of modernity has lost the essence of joy. Joy is a function of that almost impossible sincerity that unveils the essence of man. The grimace of the fool, who shamelessly denudes himself before others in confession, becomes a sign of the isolation of the modern self and the end of the utopia of sincerity pursued by Rousseau.

    Description: On Features of Word Usage in Dostoevsky’s Poetic Dictionary in Connection with M.L. Uralskij and G. Mondry’s Dostoevsky and the Jews (St. Petersburg: Aletheia, 2021) . This article addresses the question of Dostoevsky’s alleged anti-Semitism with particular attention to Uralskij and Mondry’s book devoted to this topic, in which conclusions about the author’s chauvinism and xenophobia are based on his use of the word ‘Jew’ (zhid). For almost the entirety of the 19th century, however, such word usage was not a marker of anti-Semitism. Throughout his life, Dostoevsky communicated with many representatives of the Jewish people without differentitating them in any particular way from representatives of other nationalities. In the writer’s poetic dictionary, the word ‘Jew’ sometimes denotes a person who acquires unscrupulously, examples of which Dostoevsky found in all nationalities of the world, including the Russian.

    Description: In The Icon and the Square, Maria Taroutina examines how the traditional interests of institutions such as the crown, the church, and the Imperial Academy of Arts temporarily aligned with the radical, leftist, and revolutionary avant-garde at the turn of the twentieth century through a shared interest in the Byzantine past, offering a counternarrative to prevailing notions of Russian modernism.Focusing on the works of four different artists—Mikhail Vrubel, Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, and Vladimir Tatlin—Taroutina shows how engagement with medieval pictorial traditions drove each artist to transform his own practice, pushing beyond the established boundaries of his respective artistic and intellectual milieu. She also contextualizes and complements her study of the work of these artists with an examination of the activities of a number of important cultural associations and institutions over the course of several decades. As a result, The Icon and the Square gives a more complete picture of Russian modernism: one that attends to the dialogue between generations of artists, curators, collectors, critics, and theorists.The Icon and the Square retrieves a neglected but vital history that was deliberately suppressed by the atheist Soviet regime and subsequently ignored in favor of the secular formalism of mainstream modernist criticism. Taroutina’s timely study, which coincides with the centennial reassessments of Russian and Soviet modernism, is sure to invigorate conversation among scholars of art history, modernism, and Russian culture.

    Description: This book examines different contexts relevant to Pushkin in 1825 when the poem “Count Nulin” was written. Its bulk consists of studies devoted to (1) various manuscripts of the text, (2) the issue of censorship and the publication of “Count Nulin” during Pushkin’s life, (3) the biographical context for the poem’s creation, (4) the role of the text in literary polemics and (5) reactions of critics (as well as readers) during Pushkin’s lifetime. Developing the idea of Boris Eikhenbaum, R. Leibov proposes that the text was addressed primarily to members of the Petersburg literati who made up the “Poliarnaia zvezda” (Polar Star) circle. Moreover, Leibov suggests that, in “Count Nulin”, Pushkin purposefully exaggerated those literary techniques that attracted criticism in “Eugene Onegin”, making “Count Nulin” function as a self-parody. The final section of the book is composed of commentary on the poem, combining a traditional focus on the interpretation of fragments of the text with an emphasis on its overall composition, as well as description of the changing rhetorical and narrative strategies of its author.

    Description: Through an intelligent and sharp description of the Irvine School of Critical Theory, Ewa Bobrowska’s book significantly expands the knowledge about post-structuralist critical thinking that has dominated the Western humanities in the last quarter of a century. While the achievements of Derrida, Lyotard, Iser, as well as Jameson, Joseph Hillis Miller, Greenblatt, and Dominick LaCapra are well known in Polish critical thought, the interdisciplinary project called the Irvine School has not yet been systematically and competently described. . . . The unusual dispositions of the author, who is an English philologist, philosopher, art historian, and an active artist, allow her to carry out all dimensions of the analysis, including critical discourse, philosophical reasoning, and an intellectual examination of a work of art. Ewa Bobrowska’s book can be read in several ways: as a guide to contemporary (mainly American) art that requires participation, and as a guide to contemporary (mainly postmodern) philosophy while visualising some, even very abstract, statements. These two diverse fields of contemporary art discourse and philosophy meet in this work and illuminate each other, giving the reader an extraordinary opportunity to understand the contemporary world of images and ideas. What is particularly worth emphasising is the part of the work that refers to ethical threads: it shows a little-known part of contemporary philosophy and, at the same time, the author’s extraordinary sensitivity. The present book aims to fill the existing gap by focusing on the nature of ambivalent humor, paradoxicality, and methods of “de-automatizing” consciousness through deconstruction. It is precisely the dialogical and paradoxical nature of Dostoevsky’s artistic method that enables such different and sometimes contradictory readings.

    Description: In Dostoevsky’s binary poetics, an opposition can be drawn between two fundamental stances – asceticism and incontinence. Ascetics adhere to an ethos of self-restraint in response to the desires of the flesh. Incontinents act spontaneously to gratify their desires. The current study draws an analogy between the behavior pattern of Dostoevsky’s self-denying intellectual heroes and that of exiled castrate (skoptsy) communities. Dostoevsky’s ascetics represent a cerebral mindset attracted to visions of social utopia; their intellectualizing detaches them from the life of the body and thus weirdly parallels the strictures of the skoptsy. An encounter between an ascetic and a prostitute serves as a central plot moment in works such as Crime and Punishment and Notes from Underground.

    Description: The book addresses the problem of the influence of copyright law on modern modes of functioning and understanding of literature. This problem is situated in a context of Law and Literature studies and in particular within the cultural studies of copyright, which are summarised in chapter one. The history of copyright law and related literary discussions is recapitulated in chapter two. In the next chapters, the analysis is focused on literary discussions in which copyright law is a directly posed problem, or it is indicated only as context. Particular attention is paid to: philological genealogical research (and texts by Wacław Borowy and John Livingstone Lowes); discussion surrounding T.S. Eliot’s poem ‘The Waste Land’; the debate provoked by Karol Irzykowski’s article ‘Plagiatowy charakter przełomów literackich w Polsce’ [‘The Plagiarising Character of Literary Breakthroughs in Poland’]; analysis of copyright law in the writings of Jacques Derrida and in the novel Muza dalekich podróży [The Muse of Long-Distance Travels] by Teodor Parnicki; finally, anthologies Future of Copyright published at the beginning of the twenty-first century in Poland. In the last chapter, the analysed problems are situated in the context of the debate on the commodification of literature in capitalist societies.

    Description: Culture as a Verb is a book on what I call new humanities of a wide and vastly varied orientation, direction, turns, and simply interests, interconnecting in opposition to the principles of contemporary theory of humanistic cognition. For, if contemporary knowledge is presented as bodiless, impersonal, static, external and neutral (unengaged), then the new humanities inquiries are led on the basis of different principles: embodied knowledge, personalised (participating), actively-acting (intervening cognitively), penetrating the research field and situated (engaged). This is a very significant change . . . With it, we go from a culture of disinterested observation, founded on the myth of the contemplative view of the whole external world, to a real culture of participative action, reconciled with perspectivity and the fragmentary nature of cognitive actions of a subject, who forges a path to reality, from within and by their own actions.

    Description: This book is the first monograph concerned with a feminist reading of Polish contemporary poetry to utilise tools of affective methodologies. It seeks to establish the extent to which affects contribute to the process of collective forms of existence. The book’s main thesis assumes affects to be the triggers of action, particularly of critically modifying established narratives about emotive histories of societies which include the allotment of the capacity to feel in order to coercively classify the actors and actresses of collective life. Poetry, as a very particular instance of those various affective machineries, becomes yet another version of collective memory. Poetical representations, acting in synergy with transformations of the contemporary subject, operate on three levels: firstly, by reproducing normative images of womanhood in its relations with surroundings, secondly, by disturbing the said images through an, often critical, reformulating of them, or thirdly, by becoming postulated variants of those transformations. The semantic dominants one can find in recent women’s poetry that, at the same time, constitute a portion of the broader symbolic feminine capital being a unified construct edifying the social discourses, pertain to the category of disease/illness, seeing, trauma and shame, the affective work, love, migration, and community.

    Description: The author identifies selected aspects of the history of attention and exposes the peculiar relation between philosophy and literature against this background. The task of describing the world, not finished by phenomenology, is taken up by attentive poetry: it can complete the project of portraying the visible world, while keeping the rules of perceptive faith, but also being mindful of the constraints of language at the same time. After breaking contact between word and object, the poet becomes the one who brings the spirit of mankind closer to the world. In the context of twentieth-century dilemmas and projections, attention turns out to be not only a simple consequence of a certain aesthetic choice, but instead, choosing attention gains a crucial importance, rendering it a tool of re-vindicating the lost reality. Attentive poetry, that is such poetry, which does not allow itself to get carried away with language in whichever direction, but tames its anarchy, and does not accept a finished world, rejecting the temptation of relying on easy knowledge, is complemented by attentive reflection in this study: a reflection which is not prone to putting too much faith in the exclusivity of its own accomplishments.     Description: В 13-й том «Архива еврейской истории» вошли избранные главы из воспоминаний выдающегося юриста начала ХХ века Бориса Гершуна, «простого человека» Анны Шойхет, «автобиография» которой охватывает первую половину прошлого века, воспоминания Геннадия и Елены Эстрайх об их попытках эмигрировать из СССР, начиная с конца 1970-х. Попытки завершились успехом уже в начале 1990-х. В раздел «исследования» вошли статьи об одном из малоизвестных членов знаменитого клана баронов Гинцбургов — Альфреде, сыне Горация и о народовольце Савелии Златопольском. Альфред Гинцбург был управляющим Ленскими золотыми приисками и внес существенный вклад в развитие российской золотодобывающей промышленности. И, разумеется, в благосостояние семейства. Статья о члене Исполнительного комитета «Народной воли» Савелии Златопольском является по существу первым исследованием об этом видном деятеле революционного движения. В приложении к статье публикуются показания Златопольского на следствии и письма из заключения. Завершают том публикации лагерных писем известного фольклориста и музыковеда Моисея Береговского и транскрипт интервью Бориса Каменко, чудом пережившего Холокост на Ставрополье. Все остальные члены его семьи были расстреляны нацистами. Материалы, публикуемые в настоящем томе, извлечены из архивов Москвы, Санкт-Петербурга, Нью-Йорка, а также из семейных архивов.

    Description: The book is an extended commentary on Pushkin’s poem “The Robber Brothers”. The author redefines the poem’s place in Pushkin’s creative biography and provides a detailed line-by-line commentary. This poem by Alexander Pushkin has been considered peripheral among his “Southern Poems”, and therefore researchers have paid little attention to it. The main cause of such lack of consideration was the specific history of the creation of “The Robber Brothers.” Pushkin experimented with constructing a new poem at the intersection of different vectors of genre and style topical for both the poet and literature as a whole. Due to this dynamic tension, the concept of the poem became ambiguous – the choice of the plot composition and narrative methods were not determined. After making several attempts and sketches, Pushkin shortened his initial concept and created an author legend on the genesis of the poem, which was introduced to the first audience of readers as a disconnected fragment of a scattered whole, whereas the plot of the poem was depicted as based on a real event. Within Pushkin’s corpus, “The Robber Brothers” remained primarily a literary monument of the author’s rapid evolution during his “Southern” period. It proved to be an extremely concentrated experiment, ultimately without success.

    Description: Esse-perfect in Macedonian: lexical distribution and contextual restrictions - The present article deals with the esse-perfect in Macedonian, also found in Aromanian and some Albanian dialects, which is formed with verbs of both aspects by means of the auxiliary sum ‘to be’ plus the (formally) passive participle. In contrast to previous work on this topic, our research sets out to determine the domains of usage for this construction in Macedonian, both in the standard language and its dialects, especially those on the western periphery and in linguistic enclaves surrounded by Albanian-speaking communities. In addition to personal fieldwork, three main corpora serve as a material basis for this task; see the list of sources at the end of the article. The formation of the esse-perfect is rather limited when compared with the other two perfects of Macedonian. In particular, its distribution clearly depends on lexical verb classes, with language contact accounting for less rigid restrictions and a wider usage of this construction.

    Description: This collection of essays covers a hundred-year history of Russian-language literature in Israel, including the pre-state period. Some of the studies are devoted to an overview of the literary process and the activities of its participants, others—to individual genres and movements. As a result, a complex and multifaceted picture emerges of a not quite fully defined, but very lively and dynamic community that develops in the most difficult conditions. The contributors trace the paths of Russian-Israeli prose, poetry and drama, various waves of avant-garde, fantasy, and critical thought. Today, in Russian-Israeli literature, the voices of writers of various generations and waves of repatriation are intertwined: from the "seventies" to the "war aliyah" of the recent times. Both the Russian-Israeli authors and their critics often hold different opinions of their respective roles in Israel’s historical and literary storms. While disagreeing on the definition of their place on the map of modern culture, Russian-Israeli writers are united by a shared bond with the fate of the Jewish state.

    Description: In Part I, Ryszard Nycz formulates an opinion on the topical specifics of the humanities’ studies; the opinion is rooted in the traditions of the discipline (literary studies), the ability of its influential orientation (intertextual poetics), as well as the writings of T. W. Adorno, one of the most astute philosophers and researchers of modern culture. In Part II, the author drafts a modified formula for carrying out the theory of literature, the aim of which is to avoid not merely its marginalisation, but its breaking-up (and the assigning of it to anthropology and/or cultural studies in particular). In Part III, the author endeavours to delineate the tasks of literary criticism, exposed to challenges generated by the changes in the function and status of national literature, models of identity, and in the relationships between the global and local dimension of contemporary culture. In Part IV, case studies are used to critically test the traditional view of the solely-applied character of interpretation against theory. The last part, ‘Literature: A Reading of a Letter’, acts as a summary. In it, the author depicts a concept of literature precisely as poetics of experience, as well as drafting a sketch of the theory of its understanding. As part of this theory, in the entirety of the practices and procedures of getting to know it, the author distinguishes three separate (in some aspects) tasks: spontaneous understanding, intellectually rigorous interpretation, and the experience of reading.

    Description: Onomastics and Paradox: Dostoevsky and the Collapse of the Ontological Integrity of Character. Onomastics plays a key role in Dostoevsky’s poetics: the names of most of his characters are essential to their portraits, even though these names rarely signify unambiguously. Moreover, a number of his characters are nameless and a semantic tension arises from this absence: the impossibility of “branding” the hero with a name prevents us from identifying his or her features through verbal onomastic symbolism. The portrait of such characters necessarily remains somewhat murky. It is no coincidence that the “nameless heroes” are the most paradoxical and enigmatic characters of Dostoevsky’s creative world. By denying them names, Dostoevsky seeks to destroy the inner integrity of these heroes, their identity, in order that a living, independent, and contradictory personality emerges in them.

    Description: Funny Fathers. Types of the ridiculous old man in Dostoevsky’s novels. The first chapters from Dostoevsky’s novel Netochka Nezvanova deal with the fate and the peculiar story of life of the heroine’s stepfather. He is called Efimov and, being an alcoholic and overconfident, he plunges his family into misery. Therefore, he can be considered a prototype of ridiculous father figures occurring in the great novels (Marmeladov from Crime and Punishment, General Ivolgin from The Idiot and Stepan Trofimovič from The Demons). The article focuses on the determining character traits of these figures who embody the dramatic failure of the father generation. While characterising those laughable vecchi, special attention is given to the seemingly paradox criterium of the tragicomic, which finally results in questioning the tension between freedom and a predetermined fate.

    Description: The Paradox of Female Sexual Desire in Crime and Punishment: On the Question of the Female Breast . This article examines references to the female breast found in Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment to reveal the contradictory role of female sexuality in his literary world. Despite feminist inclinations and a personal familiarity with “emancipated love,” he had particular difficulty with issues of women’s sexual desire and female corporeality, associating them with danger. He actively suppressed the bodies and desire of physically attractive women in his work. In Crime and Punishment, for ex., both Sonia and Dunia attract male desire, but do not express their own. References to the female breast in his work reveal this deep ambivalence about the female body: now alluring, now menacing, now subject to torture, the breast can also be symbolically maternal or disease-ridden.

    Description: A Gentle Creature’s Paradox. The aim of this article is to analyze a smile as a mimetic, nonverbal facial expression. Although a smile most often displays joy and pleasure, it sometimes expresses emotions such as sadness, cruelty, anger, etc. This analysis aims to focus on the paradoxical “mistrustful, silent, and evil smile” of A Gentle Creature. Her smile marks the beginning of her life with the Pawnbroker and it is her companion until the end of her life. The paradox of smile illuminates other paradoxes such as that of communication (verbal/nonverbal, communication/its negation), of death (suicide and the icon, destruction/resurrection, silence/birth of words), of the Pawnbroker’s story (author-narrator, narrative/story, fantastic/realistic, contradictions in the story), and of the event (real event/event in the narrator’s mind).

    Description: About Slavonicisms in The Brothers Karamazov. This work draws attention to the function of Slavonicisms in The Brothers Karamazov. In the last dialogue between Kolja Krasotkin and Alesha Karamazov, Kolja’s lines about postmortality or immortality are stylistically limited to the framework of the middle-lower register of Russian and thus exclude any metaphysical component. Alesha’s response, in contrast, is constructed in a Slavonic idiolect that belongs simultaneously to the conventional and to the mythopoetic. Another case of this appeal to the Slavonic register may be found in the dispute between Ivan and the devil regarding the recognition or denial of the incarnation of evil in the world. Claiming incarnation, Satan tries to demonstrate the equivalence of demonic and human nature. The primary instrument deployed in this argument is a Slavonicism, claimed by Satan, but which does not belong to him.

    Description: Verbal aspect in the Macedonian dialect of Boboshtica-Drenova and Albanian-Slavic language contact - Long-term subdominant bilingualism with Albanian has had a significant impact on verbal aspect marking in the Macedonian dialect of Boboshtica-Drenova (South-East Albania). The Slavic formal opposition of perfective and imperfective aspect marked through a variety of derivational methods has been preserved. However, under Albanian influence two continuous aspect con­structions have been grammaticalised in the dialect, one of them based on the locative ǵe, and the other on the adversative conjunction toko. The paths of grammaticalization of these markers are investigated, which include structural transfer (ǵe 〈 locative and temporal tek, toko 〈 adversative and continuous po), which is partially supported by the phonetic similarity between the respective Albanian and Macedonian dialectal markers (toko || duke, tek).

    Description: In her book, Katarzyna Liszka provides the reader with a clearly outlined map of the main sides of the debate on the ‘division of labour of memory’ after the Holocaust, examines the arguments, which are used in this dispute, together with an analysis of ethical implications, which, according to the author, have a fundamental significance for the majority of Jewish thinkers taking a stance in this debate. This angle, with the focus on the plural ‘ethics of memory’ in the beginning of the work, allows the author to connect various idioms of philosophy, theology and sociology of the twentieth century, as complementary elements of reflection framed as a way of remembering. In this perspective, the subsequent notional mediations, corrections of approaches taken by Hannah Arendt, Avishai Margalit, or Zygmunt Bauman, become an indirect proof of the crystallisation, not only of the aforementioned community of memory work, but also of the transformation of ethical and legal categories related to the issue of the community of universal ethics, which the author writes about in the conclusion of her work, with reference to the reflections of Natan Sznaider and Daniel Levi.     Description: Deconstruction in the 19th Century (from the Natural School to Leo Tolstoy) and Fyodor Dostoevsky. The modern understanding of deconstruction arose from post-structuralism and implies distrust of semblance, the outward appearance of any ideology or structure, together with the search for a hidden interior. Dostoevsky renounces one-dimensionality and shows its deconstructing nature. He considers it a prejudice to believe that disclosing the hidden and forbidden has more “truth” in it, as is evident from his dispute with Tolstoy, who uses the principle of exposing the ignoble background of a supposedly noble national ideology to criticize the “defenders of the Slavic brothers” in Anna Karenina. Dostoevsky refuses to recognize the results of deconstruction (the denial of the declared) as the last and only version of the truth about reality. His approach can be defined as the “deconstruction of deconstruction.”

    Description: Dostoevsky’s Dialectic: The Name of the Father and the Saving Power of Childhood. The artistic experience of Dostoevsky’s novels combines two rather heterogeneous hermeneutic strategies – the analysis of the unconscious and of existential utopia. In the first case, Dostoevsky problematizes the completeness of the symbolic order of culture as such through the thematization of the figure and name of the Father. From the perspective of the second strategy, Dostoevsky creates his own utopia of a symbolic order, with the eternal substance of people’s life capable of infinite renewal in the child’s soul in the role of the great Other. His novels reveal what can be called the creative core of culture. The murder of Fyodor Karamazov is an archetypal event, a sacrifice of the Body of the Father for the sake of the NAME of the dead Father, it initiates a paradigmatic process in the Symbolic.

    Description: This volume comprises texts created on the basis of three-fold meetings: the first kind were constituted by lectures led by invited guests, representing various fields and areas of research, which, in some necessary simplification, can be divided into historiography (Ewa Domańska), philosophy (Agata Bielik-Robson), literary and memory studies (Michael Rothberg), and philosophy of literature (Michał Paweł Markowski). The lectures were accompanied by workshops, whose leaders present their texts in the second part of the work, and the third part is made up of notes from panel talks. As per the nature of these types of sessions, they present themselves as highly intense (various meetings from morning until evening), as well as showing the unavoidable variety in outlooks, which is one of the major advantages of such events. Another advantage is a slightly more ‘personalist’ encounter, not so much with text, but with the figure of an author, and thus also with the personality of a researcher. What became the idea bringing all these activities together was memory, understood and treated in very different ways. The variety of starting points and views on the forms and places of the functioning of memory then transformed itself into an abundance of experiences of the ‘originators’ and the richness of feelings (also of those imprinting themselves in memory) of the ‘receivers’.

    Description: Deconstruction in Dostoevsky’s Novels: Ideas, Plans, Preparatory Materials, Main Text . This article examines the role of deconstruction in Dostoevsky’s novels as a technique for bringing the ideological and psychological components of images into collision. These images are imbued with complex paradoxical meaning, revealing anthropological and philosophical issues in the writer’s work. Crime and Punishment advances the theme of a need for crime in order to achieve the moral rebirth of the hero. Moving forward on this path, the novel dismantles both inner and outer limits in the space of the hero. In The Idiot, Dostoevsky links passionate and antagonistic motifs to the Christian idea, thereby deconstructing boththe entire ethical concept of Myškin and the narrative associated with it. In The Adolescent the main character is subjected to destructive motivational interventions.

    Description: Alongside Bentham the guardian of the weak and the subordinate, sensitive to other’s suffering and deeply engaged in the fight for a better future and a more just legal system, there also exists a Bentham the unmitigated demiurge, with uncontrollable ambitions, incessantly creating soulless and authoritarian worlds of control and discipline. There is much that would suggest the English philosopher was pushed towards authoritarianism by the striving to provide a sense of security to the landed classes, and by fear of phenomena such as panic and social unrest. At the same time, as work on specific projects progressed, the noble impulses which often underpin them became weak, and they were replaced, under the influence of perfectionist fears and passions, by the thirst for complete control and total discipline.     Description: “Both violin and contrabass”: The Figure of Paradox and the Poetics of Bewilderment in the Artistic Thinking of Pirandello and Dostoevsky. Pirandello and Dostoevsky are deeply linked at thematic, ideological and textual levels. In 1908, Pirandello published the treatise Humorism, in which he elaborated an original theory of humor and substantiated a worldview that is quite close to the type of artistic consciousness inherent in Dostoevsky’s work, and is genetically related to it. The poetics of paradox, in which every mental and sensual experience is tested by its “opposite”, encourages the reader to “hang” between two seemingly mutually exclusive principles while opening up the possibility of a new, more complex understanding of reality and of the Other. This article presents aspects of Pirandello’s theory of humor in a new light, revealing their potential for application to the analysis of Dostoevsky’s work.

    Description: We will be following the departure of cinema ‘towards virtuality’ (towards new ways of creating, understanding and existence of cinema in the times of transformations of media technology) primarily from the perspective of selected artistic practices of three artists: Peter Greenaway (who often repeats the argument about the ‘death’ of traditional cinema and the birth of new ways of depiction), Lynn Hershman Leeson (American artist of the ‘wider cinema’) and Mike Figgis, who reflected on various types of cinematic image and the cinema of the digital age in his autothematic films. The authors will also discuss cinema in the wider context of cultural reflection. Questions on the ‘virtualisation’ of culture will require an attempt at defining the notion of ‘virtuality’, and a tracing of its journey through different levels of cultural discourses, as well as linking it back to the analysed works. Towards Virtuality… is a book about cinema (its creators, works and characters), steeped in technological, philosophical, scientific and, more generally, cultural transformations of modernity.

    Description: Professionals and Marginals in Slavic and Jewish Cultural Traditions is the annual publication of the Slavic & Jewish Cultures: Dialogue, Similarities, Differences’s project for 2022. It includes papers from the international conference of the same name held in Moscow on December 1–3, 2021. The book includes twelve articles by Russian and Israeli scholars who work on the social and cultural role of professionals and marginals in various ethno-confessional traditions. The question of the perception of professionals in culture falls under the opposition “one’s own/another’s,” where belonging to “one’s own” or a “foreign community or class” becomes a defining marker. Traditionally, “social strangers,” to which representatives of various professions belong, were assigned a special role in calendar, magical, and occasional rites. Thus, professionals and social marginals were not considered outcasts: society assigned them a particular place and role, delegating special cultural functions to them. Like previous publications in this series, Professionals and Marginals in Slavic and Jewish Cultural Traditions is notable for the large amount of field and archival material that it makes publically available for the first time.
