Description: "From an international standpoint, the docent position in Norway is unique, insomuch as it is a top academic position equivalent to a professorship. This book combines a thorough examination of the docent’s role and place within the higher educational system with a presentation of a development project to move associate professors up the career ladder to the docent level at the University of Agder (UiA). The first part of the book looks at the Norwegian docent in historical, current and R&D theoretical perspectives. In the second part, six docents relate their own paths to qualification for the position. Part 3 presents the rationale behind the UiA project and how it was executed and subsequently evaluated. The final part of the book analyzes the docent’s current and future challenges. Criteria for promotion and expert committee rulings are among the topics discussed. Å satse på dosenter can be read as a practical introduction for docents on how to manage a promotion seminar, but it can also be read as a contribution to the discussion on how to improve research, teaching and communication at universities and colleges. The book will be of particular interest to docents and candidates for the docent position, members of expert committees and administrators at various levels within higher educational institutions. As a contribution to the debate on higher education’s need for different profiled positions, the book is relevant for a broader audience of researchers, politicians and public servants in Norway and the other Scandinavian countries. The book has been edited by Carl Christian Bachke, docent emeritus at the University of Agder, and Mads Hermansen, PsyD and professor emeritus at University of Agder."

Description: "Our students in higher education want their studies to be useful and relevant to their future work career, personal development and social life. The authorities want students' achievements and completion of degrees to increase. Likewise, they expect the workforce to be optimally adapted to today's market and the uncertain demands of the future. They require students to be flexible, willing to learn and familiar with an abundance of general skills. A universal solution is to make studies more ""practical"". We -as teachers in HE - are challenged to improve students' abilities to reason and to prepare for practical applications, whether we are working on conventional theoretical topics in professional education or in continuing education. The authors of this book believe that the work of teaching with these expectations in mind is not just about professional practice, but about practical matters in a broad sense. Students are active in many ways, and they learn and work in the contexts in which they move, so the experiences and insights that they bring with them and then create by acquiring competences also make them practitioners themselves. One of our central educational tasks is to help them to recognize self-worth, that is, to see themselves in the mirror of knowledge, values and skills that higher education can offer them. The book contains examples of how students can work practically and in research, from R&D projects about learning to theoretical contributions. The examples also show how theory and practice can flow together in any teaching environment as well as in the construction of curricula and programmes. "
Description: "Våre studenter i høyere utdanning ønsker at studiene deres er nyttige og relevante for deres framtidige arbeidskarriere, personlige utvikling og sosiale liv.

Description: "Quality in teaching is a recurrent theme in discussions of higher education. We hear about unqualified lecturers and poor instruction, about classes that obfuscate rather than illuminate the subject matter, and teaching that fails to inspire and motivate students for learning. This anthology addresses the challenges university-level pedagogy faces and provides examples of teaching methods that can accommodate these challenges. The objective is to contribute with research-based knowledge, strategies for student-active learning and activities that stimulate learning, underscored with examples from pedagogical practice. The individual articles build on empirical data from four different subject areas: construction contracting, traffic and transport logistics, organizational studies and the compulsory philosophy course for undergraduate students in Norway (Examen philosophicum). This book will be of interest primarily to teachers, advisors and guidance counsellors, and educators responsible for curriculum planning within the higher education sector; however, students will also find it useful. The authors are researchers and instructors all working in various ways with learning processes at Nord University."

Description: "The book discusses various challenges and solutions related to the coordination of health and welfare services. Coordination is central to creating integrated services for users with complex needs. In order to understand the challenges and opportunities associated with creating such services, one needs knowledge related to organizations and the organizational context. The book's chapters takes on an organizational perspective where patterns and explanations are sought in formal and informal structures, processes and culture. The users’ need for services often cross established boundaries, both organizational and professional. The authors highlight the possibilities and limitations of some selected solutions that will help to cut across or break down such boundaries. Examples of such solutions are user involvement, interdisciplinary collaboration, team organizations, coordinators, standardization and patient pathways, digitization and decision-making tools for employees who work in the services. One chapter summarizes three different theoretical research approaches for analyzing coordination and collaboration. The target group is researchers, university and college employees and students of the health and welfare sector. The book also will be of interest for user organizations as well as administrative and professional decision-makers in public and private businesses."

Description: "The student is becoming a teacher is presenting the first Norwegian study made on the sense of belonging in higher education. Central themes are comprehension and knowledge development, and the students’ process of formation is essential, without it being explicit in all the articles. The authors are concerned with interplay between techne and fronesis related to individual growth and professional development. The informants of these studies are teacher students from year 1-4, resulting in a wide range of new knowledge and theoretical viewpoints. In this anthology, the question of the dualism between theory and practice is raised. Could it be that knowledge is a circular production from practise to theory and back? It is also evident that the sensation of social belonging is closely connected to a sense of academic belonging, and that the cohesion of teacher students and their teachers is of great impact. The target group of this peer-reviewed anthology is teacher students and teacher student educators. However, these articles will also be relevant for other educational groups and students. "

Description: "How much room to manoeuvre do administrators of municipal social services feel they have in meeting organizational objectives? How much latitude do staff in these services have to utilize their own expertise in performing tasks? What challenges do welfare services face due to cultural diversity? Can new ways of working contribute to increased learning for students in the practice field? These are among the questions addressed in this book, in which challenges associated with maintaining society’s objectives in municipal health, care and child welfare services are focused on. The goal is to provide the reader with insight into degree of latitude pratictioners have when seeking to utilize their own expertise in the context of their job. The book is a collection of ten scholarly articles that, via new empirical studies and theoretical contributions, shed light on manoeuvering room within the practical fulfilment of professional welfare services in the two main municipal healthcare and child welfare organizations. Both services must comply with public regulatory measures in an increasingly more complex field; both are therefore examined in the same anthology. Latitude in Professional Welfare Administration is directed primarily toward students in nursing, child welfare and social education, but may be of interest to students in other health and caregiving fields as well. Employees within municipal health and family services including child welfare services, and politicians involved in development within this sector, will also find this anthology useful. The anthology’s editors are Bente Lilljan Lind Kassah, professor of sociology at UiT The Arctic university of Norway in Harstad; Hilde Nordahl-Pedersen, assistant professor at UiT The Arctic university of Norway in Harstad; and Wivi-Ann Tingvoll, docent emerita at UiT The Arctic university of Norway in Narvik."
Description: "Hvordan opplever ledere handlingsrommet for å ivareta kommunale tjenesters samfunnsoppdrag?
