Description: The present volume, a collection of papers focusing on Venice and those former Venetian colonies which passed to the Ottoman Empire during the early Modern age, retraces the relationship between Venetians and Ottomans in terms of their economic and social history from the end of the XV to the XVIII century showing the permeability of the ruling forces of these two great empires within a continuous and changing stream.

Description: Arvid Torgeir Lie (1938–2020) is among the leading Norwegian poets in the post-war period - original, innovative, surprising and highly valued by fellow writers. With a background in the mining community Åmdal's mine in Tokke municipality, he wrote poems inspired by the haiku tradition, labor poems, landscape poems and also more civilization-critical poems about media development. The lyrics reflect the environment he grew up in, with a strong sense of community, but he also engages in dialogue with tradition and seeks a genuinely informal, oral and disarming poetic expression. In this book, Sveinung Nordstoga draws several lines through his entire authorship, which in addition to eleven collections of poems also contains translations, a collection of short stories and an unpublished play.

Description: In the period from the middle of the 19th century until the outbreak of the First World War, a modern Norwegian literature developed in parallel with a modern Norwegian media society. New forms of transport and communication, sound and imaging techniques, changed the conditions for what man could see, hear, do, know and imagine. How was Norwegian literature affected by these media technological changes? This book examines how the relationship between man and his media was expressed in Norwegian literature written in the period from 1850 to the beginning of the 20th century. The book shows how the literary innovations of the late 19th century can be understood as responses to the same period's media development, and thus advocates that a media aesthetic perspective can actualize and renew our understanding of this central period in Norwegian literary history.
    Description: Pre-print

Description: Both the labor movement and the church have played a large part in shaping modern Norwegian society. Relations between them were often strained - sometimes hostile - in the decades before the Second World War. During and after the war, many dreamed of making a fresh start, with the experiences of community and cooperation during the occupation as a basis. This book explores how these dreams turned out. Different ambitions for the good society came together, and fronts and lines of cooperation were established which have characterized Norwegian social life well into the 21st century. Many questions remained open in the 1940s and 1950s. How should the Labor Party, with a majority in the Parliament, deal with the state church in practice? Should it be given greater autonomy, or should it rather be used as a means of keeping people's erratic religious inclinations under some control? Could the church function as the conscience of the state? The Labor Party's welfare state project - was it something everyone had to cheer for, or did it also contain a worrisome totalitarian tendency? These questions have not been systematically investigated in full in the past, and this presentation is based on new source studies. The book covers a central part of recent Norwegian history, and is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how religion has been treated politically and what role the Church of Norway plays in today's social life.

Description: As transnational extractivism, neo-fascist politics, and economies of abandonment and disposability expand around the world, can we facilitate situated practices of storytelling and worldmaking that enliven futures propelled by the forces of indignation, desire, and relationality? Despite Dispossession: An Activity Book extends an invitation to restore and reinvent bonds of reciprocity with the land, humans, and non-humans, while envisioning transformative and shared horizons. This collaborative endeavor takes as its point of departure the contested realities and public struggles of the dispossessed. Bringing together seven site-sensitive engagements, the contributors develop their artistic works, as well as speculative tools and activities, to conjure worlds to come in the ruins of dispossession. The result is a combination of subtle theoretical reflection, pluriversal modes of inquiry, and unruly epistemic intervention. Drawing its inspiration from decolonizing methodologies, Black aesthetics, and epistemologies of the South, the project gathers these influences for a novel experiment that demonstrates how arts-based researchers confront dispossession through itinerant practices of resistance.
