    Description: Set in the early years of the Old Republic after the abolition of slavery, Júlia Lopes de Almeida's The Bankruptcy depicts the rise and fall of a wealthy coffee exporter against a kaleidoscopic background of glamour, poverty, seduction, and financial speculation. The novel introduces readers to a turbulent period in Brazilian history seething with new ideas about democracy, women’s emancipation, and the role of religion in society. Originally published in 1901, its prescient critiques of financial capitalism and the patriarchal family remain relevant today. In her lifetime, Júlia Lopes de Almeida was compared to Machado de Assis, the most important Brazilian writer of the nineteenth century. She was also considered for the inaugural list of members of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, but was excluded because of her gender. In the decades after her death, her work was largely forgotten. This publication, a winner of the English PEN award, marks the first novel-length translation of Almeida’s writing into English, including an Introduction to the novel and a Translators' preface, and accompanies a general rediscovery of her extraordinary body of work in Brazil.

    Description: Mesmo tendo menor escolaridade e menos dinheiro, os brasileiros das classes populares ajudaram a pagar por sua inclusão digital. Quando os brasileiros de baixa renda começaram a acessar redes sociais, pessoas de alto poder aquisitivo ridicularizaram o conhecimento tecnológico limitado, o gosto diferente e a baixa escolaridade desses usuários mais pobres, mas isso não os intimidou, e eles continuaram a expandir sua presença nos serviços on-line. Jovens criaram perfis para parentes mais velhos, quase analfabetos, e os ensinaram a navegar em plataformas como Facebook e WhatsApp. Juliano Spyer procura entender por que brasileiros de baixa renda investiram tanto tempo e dinheiro para incorporar o uso das mídias sociais a seu cotidiano. Explora essa questão por uma variedade de temas, incluindo educação, relacionamentos, trabalho e política e argumenta que o uso das mídias sociais reflete valores e motivações contraditórias. Brasileiros de baixa renda abraçam as mídias sociais para exibir sua crescente escolaridade e mobilidade social, mas a mesma tecnologia também fortalece redes de apoio mútuo tradicionais que rejeitam atitudes individualistas.

    Description: El smartphone suele estar literalmente frente a nuestras narices, por eso creemos saber lo que es. ¿Pero lo sabemos? Para responder a esta pregunta, once antropólogos vivieron durante 16 meses en comunidades de África, Asia, Europa y Sudamérica, enfocándose en el uso de smartphones por gente mayor. Sus investigaciones revelan que son una tecnología para todos, no solo para los jóvenes. El Smartphone Global presenta una serie de nuevas perspectivas que emergen de este proyecto de investigación global y comparativo. El smartphone se ha convertido tanto en un lugar dentro del cual vivimos como en un aparato que usamos para tener “oportunismo perpetuo”, pues siempre está con nosotros. Los autores muestran cómo el smartphone es más que un “aparato con aplicaciones” y exploran las diferencias entre lo que las personas dicen de él y la forma en cómo lo usan. El smartphone no tiene precedentes por el grado en el cual podemos transformarlo. Como resultado, rápidamente asimila nuestros valores personales. Para comprenderlo debemos considerar una serie de matices nacionales y culturales, tales como la comunicación visual en China y Japón, el dinero móvil en Camerún y Uganda, y el acceso a la información de salud en Chile e Irlanda, junto a las diversas trayectorias del envejecimiento en Al-Quds, Brasil e Italia. Solo entonces sabremos qué es el smartphone y podremos comprender sus consecuencias en las vidas de las personas alrededor del mundo.

Nell Haynes argues that social networks are a place where residents of Alto Hospicio, or hospice, express their feelings of marginalization as a result of living in a city far from the national capital and with a notoriously low quality of life compared to other areas urban in Chile.
