Beschreibung: Pointing at ambivalences and inconsistencies, contradictory expectations, nationalistic and pragmatic points of view, this study shows parts of the becoming, being and remaining (or not) Danish in Germany. Using qualitative methods and a constructivist approach, Levke Bittlinger examines questions of minority- and nationhood with regard to actors and the main institutions within the Danish minority in the Southern Schleswig region. The research ranges from the backgrounds of people becoming Danish in the postwar time to today’s parents sending their children to Danish institutions for social and material matters. The study reaches from the analysis of the role of the Danish school system, the cultural association including their expectations on new Danish people concerning their integration into the minority to the importance of symbols, practices and historical myths for constructing a minority belonging.

Beschreibung: Ambivalenzen und widersprüchliche Erwartungen, nationalistische und postnationale Standpunkte sind Teil eines Dänischwerdens, Dänischseins und Dänischbleibens (oder auch Nichtbleibens) im Landesteil Schleswig. Anhand von qualitativen Methoden und eines konstruktivistischen Ansatzes untersucht Levke Bittlinger Fragen des Minderheitsseins und der nationalen Zugehörigkeitsgefühle unter Akteur*innen und Institutionen der dänischen Minderheit. Die Studie beleuchtet Hintergründe für die Wahl einer dänischen (Teil-)Zugehörigkeit durch beispielsweise den Besuch einer dänischen Schule oder das Engagement im dänischen Kulturverein von der Nachkriegszeit bis heute. Es wird darüber hinaus die Bedeutung von Symbolen, Praxen und historischen Mythen für die Minderheitszugehörigkeit unter die Lupe genommen und analysiert, wie „Neudän*innen“ in Integrationskursen mit den an sie gestellten Erwartungen umgehen.

Beschreibung: Sápmi, the Sámi area, is transnational; it transcends four nation states, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Art and art history has been considered natural parts of a nation state’s inventory at least since the 19th century and has contributed to the production and maintenance of national identities and narratives. What is the role of the nation state in art history, and how has the national paradigm affected the presentation of Sámi art, historically and today? Focusing on the discipline of art history in Norway, the volume exposes the prevailing representation of Sámi art, duodji, and dáidda as ethnographic material and relates it to the politics of nation building in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The book examines the representation of Sámi art, artefacts, practices, materialites, actors, concepts, and themes in Norwegian Art History, to uncover some of the established disciplinary mechanisms and narratives. The central method is historiography in combination with fieldwork in archives and museums, aimed at doing art historiography in the expanded field – to move beyond the traditional textual focus and question naturalized institutional and disciplinary boundaries. This is one of very few historiographical studies of the art historical discipline in Norway, and the only one that does this by centring on Sámi traditions, items, actors, and conceptualizations.

Beschreibung: The articles in this volume bear witness to the productive energy of the interplay between tradition and modernity, whether in theater, literature, or popular culture. At the same time, they emphasize the importance of cultural intermediaries, including translators. The volume thus illustrates that - despite (or precisely because of) political developments in Turkey and Germany, alike - a multitude of Turkish-German themes remain vital in both society and the academy, urging further consideration, investigation, discussion, and presentation.

Beschreibung: Die Beiträge in diesem Band zeugen einerseits von der produktiven Kraft des Wechselspiels zwischen Tradition und Moderne, sei es im Theater, der Literatur oder der Populärkultur. Andererseits betonen sie die Bedeutung von Kulturmittlern, zu denen auch Übersetzer_innen gehören. Der aktuelle Band manifestiert somit, dass türkisch-deutsche Themen in großer Bandbreite trotz bzw. gerade angesichts aktueller politischer Entwicklungen, sowohl in der Türkei als auch in Deutschland, gesellschaftlich und wissenschaftlich lebendig sind und dazu drängen, auch weiterhin untersucht, hinterfragt, diskutiert und präsentiert zu werden.
