Description: Within the scope of the events of the 2019 Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Year, under the auspices of our Presidency and with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in partnership with Istanbul University, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University, and the Fuat Sezgin Islamic Science History Research Foundation, we had the honor of hosting the first International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposium of Islamic History of Science on 13-15 June at Istanbul University. Our late Professor Fuat Sezgin, who questioned and evaluated the role of Islamic civilization in the development of sciences with a scientific attitude instead of taking a reactionary defensive stance against the views that limit the role of Islamic civilization in its contribution to inter-civilizational transfer only in certain historical periods, earned an unforgettable place in the history of Islamic science while he was still alive with the dozens of works he published with his commentary, hundreds of volumes of books he uncovered, nearly a thousand scientific tools he unearthed, the scientific institutions he pioneered, and the scientists he inspired. By remembering our late Professor Fuat Sezgin, who, despite all the obstacles and difficulties he faced, faithfully and patiently devoted his entire life to showing the place of the sciences developed in the Islamic world in the international history of science, and especially to objectively revealing the role of Islamic sciences in the development of the history of Western science, we hope to be able to make a modest contribution in terms of passing his scientific legacy on to future generations. The symposium we held to honor the legacy of Fuat Sezgin by remembering the works he carried out during his lifetime and to express our gratitude to him was attended by nearly 100 worthy academicians in the field of the history of science from 21 different countries, and this legacy left behind by our late Professor was honored with a total of 79 papers presented over three days. Prepared as a tangible fruit of the symposium and a permanent expression of our gratitude to our late Professor, this proceedings book has been created with the contributions of the esteemed academicians who participated in the symposium. It consists of an introduction section of three articles written on the life and works of our late Professor, and 38 articles in English, Arabic, and Turkish categorized under the titles of Fuat Sezgin’s Contributions to the History of Science, Astronomy, Mathematics, Medicine, Geography, Natural Sciences, and Islamic Studies. Hoping that this proceedings book we have published will have an important place in the history of Islamic Science literature and make a significant contribution to the field with the belief that it will open the horizons of young researchers, we are grateful to have the opportunity to thank the individuals and institutions for their support in organizing this important event and the preparation of this proceedings book. The goal and vision of our late Professor Fuat Sezgin, who took a holistic approach to all these sciences mentioned, shows us that there are many more studies to be done in this field. The ideas and works left behind by our Professor will be a guide for many scientific studies with research that will be carried out in the coming years.

Uluslararası Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin İslâm Bilim Tarihi Sempozyumu’nu 13-15 Haziran’da İstanbul Üniversitemiz ev sahipliğinde gerçekleştirmiş olmanın onurunu yaşadık. İslam medeniyetinin bilimlerin gelişimindeki rolünü, sadece belirli tarihi dönemlerde medeniyetler arası aktarımdaki katkısı ile sınırlandıran görüşler karşısında tepkisel bir savunmacı tutum takınmak yerine ilmi bir tavırla sorgulama ve değerlendirmelerde bulunan merhum Fuat Sezgin Hocamız, tenkitli neşrini yaptığı onlarca eser, tıpkıbasımını yaptığı yüzlerce cilt kitap, gün yüzüne çıkardığı bine yakın bilimsel âlet, kuruluşuna öncülük ettiği bilimsel kurumlar ve ilham verdiği bilim insanları ile İslam bilim tarihinin sayfalarında henüz hayattayken unutulmaz bir yer edinmiştir. Sempozyumumuz aracılığıyla tüm yaşamını, karşılaşmış olduğu tüm engellere ve zorluklara rağmen, inançla ve sabırla durmaksızın İslam dünyasında gelişen bilimlerin dünya bilim tarihindeki yerini göstermeye, özellikle de Batı bilim tarihinin gelişiminde İslam bilimlerinin rolünü nesnel bir biçimde ortaya koymaya adayan merhum Fuat Sezgin Hocamızın ilmî mirasını hatırlayıp onu gelecek nesillere aktarma noktasında mütevazı bir katkı sağlayabilmiş olabilmeyi umut ediyoruz. Fuat Sezgin Hocamızın bu mirasını ve de hayatta iken yürütmüş olduğu çalışmaları onurlandırmak ve kendisine karşı minnetimizi ifade etmek üzere gerçekleştirdiğimiz sempozyuma, 21 farklı ülkeden bilim tarihi alanında çalışmalar yürüten 100’e yakın değerli akademisyen katılmış ve üç gün boyunca merhum hocamızın geride bıraktığı bu miras sunulan toplam 79 bildiri ile onurlandırılmıştır. Sempozyumun somut bir meyvesi, merhum hocamıza olan minnet ve şükran duygumuzun daimî ve kalıcı bir ifadesi olarak hazırlanan bu bildiriler kitabı, sempozyuma katılan değerli hocalarımızın katkılarıyla ortaya çıkmıştır. Bildiriler Kitabı, merhum hocamızın hayatı ve eserleri üzerine yazılmış üç makaleden oluşan bir giriş kısmı ve de Fuat Sezgin’in Bilim Tarihine Katkıları, Astronomi, Matematik, Tıp, Coğrafya, Doğa Bilimleri ve İslami Bilimler başlıkları altında kategorize edilmiş İngilizce, Arapça ve Türkçe dillerinde toplam 38 makaleden oluşmaktadır. Yayınladığımız bu bildiri kitabının İslam Bilim Tarihi literatüründe önemli bir yer edineceğini ve genç araştırmacıların ufkunu açacağı inancıyla alana önemli bir katkı sağlayacağını temenni ederek, bu önemli organizasyonun gerçekleştirilmesinde ve bildiri kitabının hazırlanmasında desteklerini esirgemeyen kişi ve kurumlara teşekkür etme imkânı bulduğumuz için bahtiyarız. Description: In order to preserve the memory of the late Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin (d. 2018) and to ensure that his significant scientific legacy serves as a source of inspiration for future generations, the 1st International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposioum on the History of Science in Islam, in collaboration with Istanbul University, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University, and the Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Research Foundation for the History of Science in Islam held its inaugural conference between June 13-15, 2019. Subsequently, IU Press published 38 of the papers that had been presented at the conference. Following this, the decision was made to organize the symposium every two years, and preparations were undertaken for the 2nd International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposium on the History of Science in Islam, which was held on October 7-9, 2021 with the theme of “Methodological Approaches to the History of Science in Islam.” The study of the intellectual output from the Islamic world as an object of research has a nearly 200-year history. Despite the efforts of many international scholars to discover, understand, and interpret the history of Islamic sciences and determine its relevance for contemporary society, many aspects of the history of Islamic sciences still exist that remain to be clarified, such as the individuals, works, theories, networks of relations, contexts, and influences. Two key questions facing researchers in this field is how to approach the history of Islamic sciences using methodological tools and how to utilize perspectives from different disciplines. The 2nd International Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Symposium on the History of Science in Islam aimed to address these issues by discussing the methodological aspects of how to research the history of Islamic sciences with a focus on the following questions: • How does the study of the history of Islamic sciences relate to the established historiography and research methods? • How can the history of Islamic sciences be periodized? Is creating a periodization that encompasses all sciences possible, or should separate periodizations be established for each individual science? • Can special methods be mentioned for studying the period following the 13th century that is commonly referred to as the post-classical period? • Has the paradigm of decline in understanding the history of Islamic sciences truly expired? • What opportunities and weaknesses do content-oriented and context-oriented approaches have in regard to analyzing scientific texts? • How should the relationship Islamic sciences have with the scientific accumulation of other civilization basins be handled? • What kind of balance should be established between continuity and originality when writing the history of scientific theories? • To what extent is the perspective presented by global history studies functional in understanding the history of Islamic sciences? • What kinds of methods and approaches should be used in teaching the history of general science at different levels, including the history of Islamic sciences? A total of 68 scholars, 41 from Turkey and 27 from other countries such as Germany, the United States of America, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Iran, Spain, Switzerland, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Syria, Tunisia, and Greece participated in 16 parallel sessions. The symposium was conducted in a hybrid format to take into account the ongoing pandemic, with 51 of the presenters having attended the symposium in person and 17 having presented their papers online. Uluslararası Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin İslam Bilim Tarihi Sempozyumu’nun ardından sempozyumda sunulan tebliğlerden 38’i IU Press tarafından yayınlanmıştı (https://iupress.istanbul.edu.tr/tr/book/1-uluslararasi-prof-dr-fuat-sezgin-islam-bilim tarihi-sempozyumu-bildiriler-kitabi/home). İslam dünyasında ortaya konulan entelektüel ürünlerin bir “araştırma nesnesi” olarak incelenmesinin yaklaşık iki yüzyıllık bir tarihi bulunmaktadır. Bu süreçte azımsanmayacak sayıda uluslararası bilim insanı, İslam bilimlerinin tarihini keşfetmeye, anlamaya, yorumlamaya ve günümüz için anlamını tespit etmeye dönük büyük bir çaba ortaya koymuş ve koymaya da devam etmektedirler. Bu olağanüstü gayrete rağmen İslam bilimleri tarihinin aydınlatılmayı bekleyen pek çok noktası (kişi, eser, teori, ilişkiler ağı, bağlam, etki vb.) bulunduğu gibi, bu tarihin gerek bir bütün olarak gerekse tek tek bilimler açısından nasıl ele alınabileceği konusunda da yerleşik metodolojilerin yetersizliğiyle karşı karşıya olduğumuz söylenebilir. Bilim, tarih, din, felsefe, toplum, siyaset, ekonomi ve dil arasındaki girift ilişkiler ağının kesişim noktasında yer alan İslam bilimleri tarihine ne tür metodolojik araçlarla yaklaşılması gerektiği, farklı disiplinlerdeki metodolojik perspektiflerden nasıl ve ne oranda yararlanılabileceği, önemli sorular olarak bu alanın ilgililerinin önünde durmaktadır. Bu çerçevede II. Uluslararası Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin İslam Bilim Tarihi Sempozyumu’nda İslam bilimleri tarihi araştırmalarının metodolojik boyutlarının, şu sorular çerçevesinde tartışılması hedeflenmiştir: • İslam bilimlerinin tarihine yönelik incelemeler, yerleşik bilim tarihi yazım ve araştırma yöntemleriyle nasıl bir ilişkiye sahiptir, nasıl bir ilişkiye sahip olmalıdır? • İslam bilimleri tarihi nasıl dönemlendirilebilir? Bütün bilimleri kuşatan bir dönemlendirme mümkün mü? Yoksa her bir bilimin tarihi için ayrı dönemlendirme mi yapılmalı? • Genel olarak “klasik sonrası dönem” olarak adlandırılan 13. yüzyıl sonrası dönemi incelemenin özel yöntemlerinden söz edilebilir mi? • İslam bilimleri tarihini anlamada gerileme paradigması gerçekten geçerliliğini yitirdi mi? • Bilimsel metinlerin analizinde içerik odaklı ve bağlam odaklı yaklaşımların sunduğu imkânlar ve zaaflar nelerdir? • İslam bilimlerinin diğer medeniyet havzalarının bilimsel birikimleriyle ilişkisi nasıl ele alınmalıdır? • Bilimsel teorilerin tarihini yazarken süreklilik ve özgünlük arasındaki denge nasıl kurulmalı? • Küresel tarih çalışmalarının sunduğu perspektif İslam bilimlerinin tarihini anlamada ne oranda işlevseldir? • Farklı düzeylerde genel bilim tarihi ve bu tarih içinde İslam bilimleri tarihinin öğretiminde ne tür yöntemler ve yaklaşımlar kullanılmalı? 41’i Türkiye’den, 27’si Türkiye dışından (Almanya, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri, Belçika, Fransa, Hollanda, İran, İspanya, İsviçre, Mısır, Özbekistan, Suriye, Tunus, Yunanistan) toplam 68 bilim insanın katıldığı ve 16 paralel oturum şeklinde planlanan sempozyum, salgın koşulları dikkate alınarak “karma” bir yöntemle icra edilmiştir. Tebliğcilerin 51’i sempozyuma yüz yüze katılmış, 17’si tebliğlerini çevrimiçi olarak sunmuş ve sempozyum eşzamanlı olarak internet aracılığıyla canlı olarak yayınlanmıştır (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q11sAL3l5CI&t=8s ve https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyrnK3q4Loc). Bu tebliğ kitabında ise sempozyumda sunulan tebliğlerden 30 tanesi bulunmakta ve bunlar İslam Bilim Tarihine Metodolojik Yaklaşımlar, Matematik Bilimler, Tıp, Doğa Bilimleri, Coğrafya, Haritacılık ve Dil Bilim başlıklı beş ana bölüm halinde okuyuculara sunulmaktadır.

Description: The Mamluks (648-923/1250-1517), who ruled Egypt, Syria, and the Hijaz region, are considered to be one of the most important Muslim-Turkish states in Islamic history because they put an end to the Crusader threat in Syria and stopped the westward advance of the Mongols (Ilkhanids) who had destroyed the eastern part of the Islamic world. The Mamluks’ establishment of security and stability in their lands enabled the ulama, who were affected by the political turmoil in Andalusia and Anatolia, as well as central Iraq and Iran in the early 7th/13th century, to turn to the Egyptian-Sham region. In addition to the political stability they created, the Mamluks built many scientific institutions in cities such as Cairo, Damascus, Aleppo, and Jerusalem. They provided wide opportunities to scholars, making these cities the most important centers of knowledge. The rich scholarly environment in Egypt and Damascus, which attracted many scholars from various parts of the Islamic world, paved the way for the writing of many works in almost every field of Islamic sciences and the emergence of new and voluminous encyclopedic genres. Thus, an enormous amount of literature was created in fiqh, hadith, tafsīr, kalām, mysticism, philosophy, logic, qirāʾa, sīra, history, and tabāqat. The understanding and interpretation of this literature, which is the result of an unprecedented scholarly effort in Islamic history, requires the contribution of many researchers in different fields. As a result of this need, interest in the scholarly and cultural accumulation of the Mamluk period is increasing both in international academic circles and in our country. Although the number and quality of studies on the political history of the Mamluks are not yet at the desired level, some studies have been conducted in the Turkish literature. However, research on the ulama, scientific institutions, types of works, and the status of Islamic sciences during the Mamluk period is still in its infancy. To overcome this deficiency to some extent, the Institute of Islamic Studies at Istanbul University (then known as the Center for Islamic Studies at Istanbul University) organized a workshop titled Islamic Sciences in the Mamluk Period on 19-20 September 2019. Thus, it was aimed to evaluate the status of the studies on the ulama and Islamic sciences related to the Mamluk period, to propose new research topics in the areas of need, to ensure cooperation among those interested in this field, and to create a basis for future studies. At the end of this workshop, the need to organize an international meeting with wide participation in the scholarly tradition in the Mamluk period was expressed. For this purpose, an international symposium titled The Tradition of Knowledge in the Mamluk Period-I (13th and 14th Centuries) was organized on September 28-29, 2021, hosted by Istanbul University in cooperation with the Institute of Islamic Studies at Istanbul University and the Foundation for Research in Islamic Sciences (ISAV). In the symposium, many researchers made presentations on tafsīr, hadith, fiqh, historiography, philosophy, kalām, mysticism, culture-literature, ulama, and scientific institutions. This book was formed by revising some of the papers presented at the symposium during the publication phase. The full text of the relevant papers has been reviewed and turned into articles. The thematically re-planned book consists of seven chapters: Qurʾānic Sciences and Tafsīr, Fiqh Thought and Literature, Hanafi Fiqh and Hadith Studies, Kalām, History and Sīra Writing, Language and Literature, Scientific Institutions and Ulama. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak, Rector of Istanbul University, and Prof. Dr. Salih Tuğ, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ISAV, for their support during the organization of the symposium.

Description: Mısır, Suriye ve Hicaz bölgesine hâkim olan Memlükler (648-923/1250-1517) Suriye topraklarındaki Haçlı tehdidine son vermeleri ve İslâm dünyasının doğusunu tahrip eden Moğolların (İlhanlılar) batıya doğru ilerleyişlerini durdurmaları sebebiyle İslâm tarihindeki en önemli Müslüman-Türk devletlerinden birisi sayılmaktadır. Memlüklerin hâkim oldukları topraklarda güven ve istikrar temin etmeleri, 7./13. asrın başlarında Endülüs ve Anadolu coğrafyası ile merkezî Irak ve İran topraklarında yaşanan siyasi karmaşa ortamından etkilenen ulemanın Mısır-Şam bölgesine yönelmesini sağlamıştır. Memlükler oluşturdukları siyasi istikrarın yanında Kahire, Dımaşk, Halep ve Kudüs gibi şehirlerde inşa ettikleri çok sayıda ilim kurumu ve ulemaya sundukları geniş imkânlarla bu şehirlerin en önemli ilim merkezleri haline gelmesini sağlamışlardır. Bu vesileyle İslâm dünyasının çeşitli bölgelerinden çok sayıda âlimin yöneldiği Mısır ve Şam şehirlerinde oluşan zengin ilmî ortam, İslâmî ilimlerin hemen her sahasında pek çok eserin kaleme alınmasına, aynı zamanda yeni ve hacimli ansiklopedik tarzda telif türlerinin ortaya çıkmasına zemin hazırlamıştır. Böylece fıkıh, hadis, tefsir, kelâm, tasavvuf, felsefe, mantık, kıraat, siyer, tarih ve tabakat ilimlerinde muazzam bir literatür oluşmuştur. İslâm tarihinde eşine az rastlanan bir ilmî mesainin sonucu olarak ortaya konan bu literatürün anlaşılması ve yorumlanması farklı alanlarda pek çok araştırmacının katkısına ihtiyaç duymaktadır. Bu ihtiyacın bir sonucu olarak Memlükler dönemindeki ilmî ve kültürel birikime yönelik ilgi gerek uluslararası akademik çevrelerde gerekse ülkemizde giderek artmaktadır. Memlüklerin siyasi tarihine dair sayısı ve niteliği henüz arzulanan seviyede olmamakla birlikte Türkçe literatürde bazı çalışmalar yapılmıştır. Ancak Memlükler döneminde ulema, ilim kurumları, telif eser türleri ve İslâmî ilimlerin durumu hakkındaki araştırmalar henüz başlangıç düzeyindedir. Bu konudaki eksikliğin bir nebze dahi olsa giderilmesi amacıyla İstanbul Üniversitesi İslâm Tetkikleri Enstitüsü (o zamanki ismiyle İstanbul Üniversitesi İslam Araştırmaları Uygulama ve Araştırma Merkezi) tarafından 19-20 Eylül 2019 tarihlerinde Memlükler Döneminde İslâmî İlimler adıyla bir çalıştay düzenlenmiştir. Böylece Memlükler dönemiyle ilgili ulema ve İslâmî ilimler hakkındaki çalışmaların durumunun değerlendirilmesi, ihtiyaç duyulan alanlarda yeni araştırma konularının teklif edilmesi, bu sahanın ilgilileri arasında iş birliğinin sağlanması ve yapılacak çalışmalar için bir zemin oluşturulması amaçlanmıştır. Yine bu çalıştayın sonunda Memlükler dönemindeki ilim geleneğine dair geniş katılımlı uluslararası bir toplantının düzenlenmesi ihtiyacı dile getirilmiştir. Bunun için İstanbul Üniversitesi İslâm Tetkikleri Enstitüsü ile İslâmî İlimler Araştırma Vakfı’nın (İSAV) iş birliği ile 28-29 Eylül 2021 tarihlerinde İstanbul Üniversitesinin ev sahipliğinde Memlükler Dönemi İlim Geleneği-I (XIII.-XIV. Yüzyıllar) adıyla uluslararası sempozyum tertip edilmiştir. Sempozyumda tefsir, hadis, fıkıh, tarih yazıcılığı, felsefe, kelâm, tasavvuf, kültür-edebiyat, ulema ve ilim kurumlarına dair birçok araştırmacı tarafından sunumlar gerçekleştirilmiştir. Elinizdeki kitap sempozyumda sunulan bazı tebliğlerin yayın aşamasında tekrar gözden geçirilmesiyle teşekkül etmiştir. Tam metin olarak hazırlanan ilgili tebliğler hakemlik sürecine tabi tutularak makale haline getirilmiştir. Tematik olarak yeniden planlanan kitap Kur’ân İlimleri ve Tefsir, Fıkıh Düşüncesi ve Literatürü, Hanefî Fıkhı ve Hadis Çalışmaları, Kelâm, Tarih ve Siyer Yazıcılığı, Dil ve Edebiyat, İlim Kurumları ve Ulema başlıklı yedi bölümden oluşmaktadır.

Description: No ano de 2017, o Brasil se posicionou como o maior produtor mundial de cana-de-açúcar e de açúcar, e o segundo de etanol. O que explica essa constância da cana-de-açúcar e dos seus derivados nas pautas de produção e de exportação brasileiras? Quais são as condicionantes físicas que explicam a expansão dos canaviais e, consequentemente, das unidades manufatureiras e industriais do açúcar, etanol e agroenergia em certas regiões do território brasileiro? Como esses determinantes, associados a fatores históricos, políticos e econômicos, levaram a arranjos territoriais e a impactos socioambientais diferenciados ao longo desses cinco séculos? Essas indagações nortearam o desdobramento dos temas tratados neste livro, descortinando um longo processo iniciado no período colonial, que aglutinou enorme quantidade de variáveis de abrangência política, econômica, social e tecnológica, ancoradas nas características físicas, sobretudo hidroclimatológicas, dos solos e do relevo das áreas onde a cana-de-açúcar, os engenhos e as usinas foram implantados.

Description: Em 1867, ao prefaciar uma das suas primeiras recolhas de literatura popular, Teófilo Braga, sugerindo uma imagem catastrófica da situação do país, referiu-se desta forma ao seu trabalho: "coligir a poesia popular portuguesa agora, no momento de transe, é como a garrafa ao mar que se atirava nos naufrágios: é para que se saiba que existiu este povo, que também sofreu e cantou". Tal sentimento nacionalista jamais viria a abandonar a sua obra antropológica, o que aliás se explica dada a matriz romântica em que ela assentava. E mesmo quando Teófilo Braga se orientou gradualmente para preocupações de cunho mais científico, isso não significou uma verdadeira ruptura com a perspectiva inicial. São pois os ecos da problemática da identidade nacional, na sua dupla vertente romântica e científica, que podemos reencontrar nestes Contos Tradicionais do Povo Português que, de resto, e independentemente do espírito com que foi concebida e realizada a sua colectânea, propõem ao leitor um conjunto de narrativas cujo fascínio permanece intacto, constituindo além disso um valiosíssimo acervo de informações em áreas que, como a Antropologia e a História das Mentalidades, se dão como objectivo a tarefa de reflectir sobre as múltiplas manifestações das sociedades tradicionais. Após termos procedido à publicação de O Povo Português nos Seus Costumes, Crenças e Tradições, também da autoria de Teófilo Braga, que tem sido considerada a primeira grande obra de conjunto da etnografia nacional, impunha-se esta reedição dos Contos Tradicionais do Povo Português, que decerto formam, juntamente com a recolha de Adolfo Coelho disponível nesta colecção, uma das mais importantes colectâneas de narrativas populares do nosso país. Também na presente reedição se manteve a divisão da obra em dois volumes, tal como sucedia na sua edição original.

Description: “De que falamos quando falamos de corpo?” foi a pergunta feita aos participantes neste volume colectivo. O tema do corpo e da incorporação é dos mais actuais e polémicos nas ciências sociais e nas sociedades contemporâneas. Tratar-se-á apenas de uma moda temática? Ou é causa e efeito de novas formas de olhar a sociedade? Tratar-se-á de uma questão própria dos centros internacionais de produção do saber, bastando-nos importar a produção feita em seu torno? Ou as gerações recentes de antropólogos portugueses têm um contributo a dar? Estas foram as questões colocadas aos autores, a quem se pediu que revissem os seus materiais de pesquisa à luz dos temas do corpo e da incorporação. O resultado foi uma afirmação de pragmatismo, em que ganha sentido a complementaridade entre perspectivas centradas na estrutura social, nas classificações simbólicas e nas práticas agenciadas.
