    Description: The present dissertation is concerned with the KIN oracle, a symbolic divination technique produced by the Hittite in the 2nd mill. B.C. and developed only in the Hittite cultural milieu. Like other omens of the Ancient Near East, the Hittite oracles were considered to be messages from the gods. The Hittite solicited omens included Extispicy, Augury, the Bed Oracle, the ḪURRI-Bird Oracle, the Snake Oracle, and the KIN Oracle. Although many studies have already explained how the different divination systems worked, the KIN oracle frame still remains difficult to understand in all of its features. In this research the KIN cuneiform sources and its oracular structure have been analyzed in all respects and enriched with tables, patterns, and pictures in order to better understand the work carried out. As far as the KIN is concerned, this research provides several different analytic implications both for Hittite and divination studies.

    Description: The volumes on the Great War that are here published are the result of a series of seminars held at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Florence between 2014 and 2015.     Description: The overbearing affirmation of the body, with its instincts and impulses, and an effort aimed at suppressing that same push: this powerful dialectic deeply marks Beckett's works, and becomes a crucial reflection of the more general tension between a vain waiting for the end and the need to move forward. The close investigation of the texts suggests a special link with the thought of Arthur Schopenhauer, revealing in particular the contiguity between the concept of Noluntas and the search, by many of Beckett's characters, for “will-lessness”, a peculiar state of quiet and abstraction from reality. Starting from these observations, this study investigates the theme of the body within Beckett's poetics, especially in light of his relationship with the Schopenhauer's Will theory.

    Description: Against the background of the cities of Lecce, Parma and Florence (Macrì’s well-known “Dimore vitali”), between the 1940s and the 1970s, an almost forgotten author (poet, translator from French, writer) and his “teacher” stand out among the fiercest critics of the twentieth century. There are many stories intertwining in the 142 epistolary pieces collected in this volume, carefully transcribed and annotated by Dario Collini. Personal stories (particularly letters are entrusted with the unprecedented and intriguing portrait of a multifaceted, complex, elusive Pagan) and collective stories, such as those told by «Libera Voce» and «Critone», which count among the cultural initiatives that helped bring the peripheral reality of Salento closer to the major literary centres of the peninsula. Along a wide chronological span, the story of a deep friendship is also revealed, which did not claim to erase the distance between the two correspondents, but which would continue over time nevertheless, nourished by “gratitude”, “esteem” and “trust”.

    Description: Carlo Battisti (Trento 1882-Empoli 1977) was one of the major linguists in Italy and took part to the history of cinema starring in Vittorio De Sica’s Umberto D.. His long and intense activity has been largely divided between linguistics and library science since the very beginning of his studies at the University of Vienna. In Florence, Battisti held lectures of Comparative History of the Romance Languages and of Library science and Bibliography at the School for Librarians and Palaeographer-Archivists, of which he was also director. The eight studies published here offer biographical and intellectual insights on him, and bring a series of unpublished documents to light. The volume is completed by an iconographic appendix.

    Description: Practical traineeship has reached a stage of high juridical and scientific recognition in the initial training courses to become preschool and primary school teachers, but also in the field of methodological and didactic studies. Indeed, since its introduction in the university pathway, at the same time as the birth of degree courses in Science of Primary Education in the nineties of the twentieth century and in the wake of what is provided by the Delegated Decrees, practical traineeship activities have reached a very mature degree of definition. To talk about direct digital integrated practical traineeship (TDDI) means to insert the discourse in the evolutionary line just mentioned. However, in this contribution I will focus only on some steps that I think are useful to reflect on the TDDI experience.

    Description: The Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence, founded in 1775 by the Grand Duke Peter Leopold, is the oldest scientific museum in Europe. Firenze University Press opens the series dealing with the six sections of the Museum with this book on La Specola, situated in Palazzo Torrigiani, which represented the original nucleus. The articles in the first section reconstruct the historic background, the foundation of La Specola and the genesis and development of the collections. The second part considers the anatomical waxes, the entomological collections, and those of the vertebrates and the invertebrates, with a view to providing a description of the precious specimens that is at once precise and accessible. Finally, the third section completes the picture, retracing the important research activity that has accompanied the history of La Specola and reporting on the scientific projects in which the personnel are engaged. The largest collection in the world of anatomical wax models and the vast zoological collection are illustrated by the people directly involved in the related research, and by a superb selection of original photos produced specially for this publication.

    Description: Despite having been written at different times and being characterised by a great variety of subject and a multiplicity of approach, the essays of Gabriele Mazzitelli gathered here all appear to have been triggered by a precise and organic project of exploration. In fact what pervades them all is his love of the book, seen on the one hand as an unrepeatable and magnificent object produced by individual genius and the cultural legacy, and on the other as a medium of knowledge, an intellectual and spiritual bond. The book beloved of Mazzitelli is that of the rich and variegated Slav cultural tradition. It is the Russian book first and foremost, but not only, and not in the abstract dimension of the erudite bibliographic citation, but in the lively, shifting and at times perishable dimension of the library, seen as a living site of encounter and study. The life of the Slav book in Italy depends upon its full accessibility and its complete valorisation. The studies in this volume represent a crucial passage towards the full realisation of this goal.

    Description: Retracing Dessí’s collaboration in the magazines “L’Orto”, “Primato” and “Cronache” directed by Giorgio Vecchietti, among stories, essays and reviews that have remained largely unpublished, means deepening the writer’s artistic development by exploring into the creative laboratory of his debut. The 36 texts collected and commented by Francesca Bartolini allow us to analyse the thematic and stylistic approaches that were further developed and deepened in the subsequent production. At the same time they take into account the years of the fascist dictatorship, allowing us to investigate the development of an intellectual conscience engaged in an anti-fascist, rebel movement typical of many writers of that generation. Weaving the critical discourse with the reading of the correspondence, the complex relationship that linked Dessí to the three editorial offices is noted, testifying to the passion of a young artist eager to follow his inclination, but also aware of the difficulty of preserving his freedom and identity in the limitations of the regime.

    Description: Literary trompe-l'oeil intends to emancipate the enigmatic and distinctive figure of Hauff from his long and unjust marginalization resulting from a now outdated current of criticism, to offer a new interpretation of his Märchen for a general rereading of this modern literary caricaturist's works. On approaching his texts, one cannot but notice how they are imbued with continual and insistent, bewitching, caustic and alienating allusions, just like the Mona Lisa's smile. With a constant critical scepticism and a subtle illusionist skill, this demythologized 'budding Satan' looks at the present situation through the 'diabolic lenses' of irony, making his works a sort of literary Befreiungskrieg, in which he lays claim to a heterotopic space of free fantastic-humorist expression, along the undulating route leading from Sterne to Heine via Jean Paul.

    Description: The enforcement of the sentence in a (re)educational perspective is a highly debated topic in different approaches, including the multidisciplinary ones. In this volume, the topic is discussed from a compensatory perspective, namely through the acknowledgement of the need to prepare educational tools to contrast the 'adverse educational actions', to which the prison population may be exposed, and to the phenomenon of repeated infractions. In addition to the elements of the treatment program (which is structured, intentional, legally regulated and procedure-like), every phase of the sentence enforcement, even those taken for granted, includes an educational value and presents itself as a growth and improvement opportunity for each prisoner.     Description: Soviet society has always been characterised by a marked institutional censorship which, in the face of the power of the written word, has set in motion a series of highly repressive institutions. However, censorship does not necessarily exert its power through forms of coercion; there are also approaches that are implemented through a complex network of cultural institutions that can "produce" society, expunging concepts and attitudes that are a threat to the system and at the same time masterminding a series of organisms designed to forge orthodox behaviour and mindframes, to the extent that the role of the external censor often becomes almost superfluous, being replaced by the "censor of the soul". This book seeks to bring to the fore this second type of censorship, albeit without neglecting the complex repressive machinery set in motion by Soviet power.     Description: The essays published here document the most recent linguistic research carried out in the field of Italian Slavistics. The contributions collected in the first part of the volume analyze the morphological and syntactic structures of various Slavic languages; the second part is dedicated to linguistic use; the last contains three experimental studies on the acquisition of Slavic languages, a particularly promising research area both for glottodidactic applications and for the contribution to studies on the relationship between thought and language. There are several Slavic languages studied (Czech, Polish, Russian, Slovenian, Ukrainian dialects, southern Slavic languages, including the spoken languages of the Pomaks in the Rhodope mountains), different perspectives (diachronic and synchronic) and various methodological approaches, testifying to the richness and progressive maturation of linguistic studies within Italian Slavistics.

    Description: The volume contains Andrea Trovesi’s linguistic writings, hitherto scattered in various journals and miscellanies, all characterized by a pragmatic approach. The first part collects studies on Slavic vocative conducted from a comparative-historical perspective ranging from Proto-Slavic to modern Slavic languages. These focus in particular on categorical transformations of the vocative, its relics, so-called ‘new vocatives,’ and pragmatic values developed in the various Slavic languages. The second part of the volume is devoted to modal meanings of the imperfect in a Slavic-Romance contrastive framework. The research privileges Bulgarian, but does not neglect the other Slavic languages of which it analyzes interesting residual peripheral aspects of such linguistic usage. Both lines of research presented here stand out for their originality and theoretical value considered from a point of view that leads from Slavic linguistics to the broader perspective of linguistics as a science of language.

    Description: The Roman Republic of 1849 is one of the most exciting moment of the heroic season of the Italian Risorgimento, a short adventure in which the contemporaries recognized the opportunity to realize ideals of freedom, tolerance and democracy. This research aims to analyses the role played by religion in the political and social experiment that started in Rome after the pope’s escape, when it was necessary to redefine relations between civil and religious authorities, as well as the role of religion itself in society: a task not at all easy if applied to a State reality, where political and religious powers had been superimposed for centuries, but that will set an inescapable precedent for the subsequent attempts to build a secular State.

    Description: Through the analysis of the predetermined verbal forms of the Povest 'vremennych let (11th-12th centuries), this book sheds light on the aspectual meanings of verbs with prefix, in order to verify the degree of evolution of the Slavic-oriental aspectual system in the most ancient phase of its attestation. The study on prefixes and the ways in which they interact with the actional characteristics of the starting verbs allows us to identify the consequences of prefixing at the lexical, actional and aspectual level. Terminative verbs with prefix acquire the resultative value ("protoperfective") and are subjected, in part, to secondary suffixation, a phenomenon that will contribute to the grammaticalization of the aspectual category in Russian and other Slavic languages.

    Description: Gino Arias (1879-1940), Florentine historian and economist of Israeli origin, was in his later years one of the top theorists of Fascist corporatism, which he came to at the end of an as yet widely unstudied intellectual path. After reconstructing his biography, the book investigates Arias's debut as a law historian, his route towards political economics and subsequent subscription to nationalism, paving the way to his involvement in that Fascist regime of which, paradoxically, he was to be both one of the most feared theorists and most illustrious victims, owing to the exile enforced upon him by the race laws. The appendix to the book offers a wealth of new documentation, including an inventory of his archives, the transcription of 130 letters to Achille Loria and his bibliography.

    Description: The diffusion of Kantian philosophy in the Russian culture was a singularly early event: even the Orthodox ecclesiastical Academies were involved in this process, despite the control exercised by the censorship in defense of the metaphysical and theological tradition. The history and sources of the "philosophy of ecclesiastical academies" are also examined through the analysis of the works of two authors (I.Ja. Vetrinskij and P.D. Jurkevic), who, with their reaction to the Kantian "revolution", attested to the deep awareness of the necessity of a real confrontation with criticism. This investigation is completed by an appendix dedicated to the complex events of Kantian studies in the Russian language during the decades marked by the Soviet regime.

    Description: The book comprises studies of twenty-four texts of Slavic-ecclesiastical production composed to recount the lives and celebrate the memory of eleven saints of the Russian Orthodox church who lived between the tenth and the seventeenth centuries: Ol'ga of Kiev (†969), Evfrosinija of Polock (†1173), Fevronija of Murom (†1228), Evfrosinija of Suzdal' (†1250), Anna of Kašin (XIII-XIV sec.), Sof'ja of Tver (XIII-XIV sec.), Vassa of Nižnij Novgorod (†1378), Julianija of Vjaz'ma (†1406), Evdokija of Moscow (†1407), Sof'ja of Suzdal' (†1542) and Julianija of Lazar'evo (†1604). Leaving to the historians the task of establishing the reliability of the hagiographic accounts handed down by the sources, the author intends to highlight the cultural influence of the texts in question. The analysis of the stylistic features, of the motifs and the bibliographical-liturgical citations contained in them, brings to light a characteristic profile of the female hagiography, identifying the image of the 'bride of Christ' as the model of sanctity for women. This interpretative key represents an initial approach to issues that have been addressed to date only in a superficial and sporadic manner as regards the East Slavic tradition, although they have begun to receive their due attention in the Latin and Byzantine sphere.

    Description: Elegantie lingue latine is the masterpiece of Lorenzo Valla's reflection on language, through which the humanist gave birth to a real re-foundation of Latin. To date we still do not have a modern, scientifically based edition of the text characterising the various editorial phases of the work, on which the author worked for over ten years and which, arbitrarily and by the author’s own will, was in circulation long before its official publication. This research is part of a future complete edition of the text: the first complete edition of a book of the “Elegantie” is presented, limited to the fifth book on the “disputatio verborum”, based on the examination, albeit partial, of the handwritten tradition and on a global reconsideration of the editorial history work.

    Description: The fil rouge of the work concerns the transformations of political professionalism, investigated through a particular category of politicians: the mayors of three municipalities in the provincial capitals of Tuscany, elected between 1994 and 2009. The reconstruction of the debate on the phenomenon, the legislative requirements and the regional political geography are the theoretical pillars on which the dual purpose of the research is based: first, to analyse the profile of the mayors in a diachronic perspective, and second, to interpret the different levels of political professionalism. The first perspective allows to illustrate the generational differences between the mayors after the introduction of the law 83/931. The second perspective focuses on the characteristics of the actors - defined on the basis of four dimensions of a continuum - and on the professionalisation of politics.

    Description: The birth and development of disciplines, as organized knowledge that guides the interpretation of reality, are inscribed in the heritage of the knowledge of our species. These follow the triple regulating principles of the historical flux of the meanings of feeling and thinking: cognitive potential, mental processing, intangible and tangible products. The flow from the indistinct feeling of the origins evolves through the archaic forms of the magic thought; to the ancient forms of declarative thought up to the modern forms of demonstrative thought. The latter with the separation between disciplines does not recognize the interconnection inherent in reality, loses the scientific revolution character and generates the unsustainable human development on the planet. From the global interconnection experience of the contemporary world, a new paradigm comes to life: transdisciplinarity, whose epistemology recomposes the knowledge and reality’s unity and diversity beyond the barriers between disciplines.

For the critical analysis of these pieces, identified so far with a 'symptomatic' examination of various fictional texts on a given historical period or person, some possible non-canonical directions have been proposed: a 'horizontal' method, which brings biofiction into the 'fictional galaxy’ of a writing subject (as in the case of Michèle Roberts), and then a ‘vertical’ method, which explores a model-biofiction to deconstruct and then reconstruct the intertwining of the synchronic and diachronic voices of its singular modus operandi.     Description: Despite being recognised as an exponent of Slovenian culture, the polymath Johann Weichard Valvasor has to date been undervalued in terms of his direct contribution to the aesthetic and literary consciousness of his homeland. He has been considered above all as a source of material for the works of others, while studies of broader scope underlining his original contribution in the sphere of Carniolan narrative, albeit in German, are still lacking. The present study, based on an attentive reading of the four volumes that compose his principal work, Die Ehre dess Hertzogthums Crain, seeks to identify all the passages that can be considered narrative units, numbering them progressively, cataloguing them by type and providing a brief summary of each. The corpus thus obtained – recorded in the appendix – has been described and appraised. Finally, individual narrative units have been compared with stories or popular songs of analogous content. The work is concluded by an evaluation of Valvasor's narrative gifts, setting the writer in a new light within the cultural and literary history of Slovenia.

    Description: The volume explores the category of urban spaces that are self-managed by the inhabitants and can be recognized as common goods: urban communities. These are defined as third spaces (neither public nor private) and recognized on the basis of seven characteristics. Furthermore, some proposals are made on how planning can adequately treat these places, through the comparison with some municipal policies and on the basis of the self-determination of experiences in order to build a city really in the hands of its inhabitants. In fact, urban communities can be seen as a strategic place for testing new relationships between citizens and between them and institutions.

    Description: In Italy, women have been able to graduate only since 1875; in Florence, at the end of the century, just fifteen women obtained the graduation at the Institute of Higher Studies. The Libraries of the University of Florence, heirs to the Institute, have intended to celebrate those first female graduates (1875-1940) and their stories, by cataloguing, digitalizing and publishing online their thesis. The oldest or most significant ones, with archival materials, photos and publications, have been exhibited at the Humanities Library. This volume illustrates the exposition and the outcome of this original documentation, thus allowing to define the peculiarities of the Florentine reality, offering the opportunity for further studies and giving visibility to women who have played a substantial role in the Italian culture, so as to not lose their memory.

    Description: Starting from the main theories about the imaginary - from the Freudian category of Unheimliche and the Todorovian category of hésitation up to the most recent contributions - the volume highlights the imaginary elements of instability in Flann O'Brien's narrative. In particular, the author analyses the discontinuities and irreconcilable contradictions of the Irish writer's textual systems, the idiosyncratic and fragmented representation of the characters, the ambiguous coexistence of natural and supernatural, the problematic relationship between signifier and signified. Malapropisms, neologisms, linguistic tics, nonsense and a series of meta-narrative games seem to compromise the search for reliable answers within the Obrienian cosmos in which truth is, in fact, an odd number.

    Description: This volume shows the outcome of a series of meetings and seminars which, on several levels, contributed to the construction of the International Conference La ricerca sull’Educazione in età Adulta nelle università italiane held at the University of Florence on the 23rd and 24th November 2017. The different contributions have tried to answer the question on the origin and development of adult education in Italy within academic contexts. What does it mean to work in this research field? The interviewed directors have reflected on a number of research approaches and have reconstructed the variety of theories, models and authors which outlined the development of this discipline in Italy over the last fifty years. Among the covered topics are: increasing the educational quality of the workplace, understanding the education incorporated in the workplace, studying the aims of education in formal and informal contexts. This has led to a new and original theme, which had however not been touched by the Italian academic literature, namely the question of inequalities and relative poverty, two important phenomena for understanding the development of future societies.

    Description: According to the Maastricht Treaty, the responsibility for the organisation and content of education and training systems lies with the Member States. However, the Community contributes to the development of quality education and the European dimension of teaching by encouraging cooperation between Member States. Europeanisation of national education systems in the European Union is both the effect of a top-down political process, with different levels of governance, and the result of a bottom-up movement. The main agents are the teachers themselves: European mobility, both physical and virtual, improves their professional practice and helps to develop their sense of belonging to a European teaching and learning community. Despite the central role played by teachers in the integration of national education systems into the European Education Area, the profile and the key competencies of the ‘European teacher’ have not been defined in European Union policy documents.

    Description: Jorge Eduardo Eielson (Lima 1924 - Milan 2006) and Mario Vargas Llosa (Arequipa, Peru, 1936; Winner of the Nobel prize in 2010) are certainly two 'exemplary Peruvians', as they have both started by digging into the history and social conflicts of their country, before opening up to global culture and reality with an interdisciplinary and intercultural spirit: Vargas Llosa did so using fiction, theatre, non-fiction and journalism; Eielson used poetry, the visual arts, non-fiction and journalism. The volume offers a rich itinerary starting from an interview with Vargas Llosa by José Miguel Oviedo (Florence, 2008), and then goes through individual aspects of the work by the two authors. It is then accompanied by photographic records and a DVD with an elaboration of Eielson's visual works, paintings and poems.

    Description: The long reign of Ivan Aleksandăr (1331-1371), the penultimate emperor of Bulgaria prior to the Turkish conquest, was marked by a series of successful military campaigns against Serbia and Byzantium and above all by an intensive cultural production, largely fostered and funded by the sovereign himself. The central decades of the fourteenth century were of crucial importance for the later cultural evolution of Bulgaria and the whole of Orthodox Slovenia, despite which to date ample and exhaustive studies on the figure of Ivan Aleksandăr are lacking. There is, in effect, a considerable amount of information at disposal, although it is scattered over the literary sources, the colophons of the manuscripts, the epigraphic documentation and also, obviously, the official deeds promulgated by the Emperor. Through the analysis of this varied documentation, this book attempts to reconstruct the figure of the sovereign, the context in which he lived and worked, his greatness and his mistakes and his parallel activities as a strategist and an illuminated patron of the arts. For the first time, the Italian reader can find collected and translated all the manuscript sources relating to the Bulgarian sovereign. The book is completed by an appendix with the original texts of the Slavonic-ecclesiastical tradition.

    Description: Realtà e memoria di una disfatta does not address either the causes of the Six Day War or the consequences that the military conflict had for Israelis and Palestinians, about which much has been written. It focuses instead on the impact of the war on Arab countries, and the weighty legacy left by the defeat of 1967, which has been much less studied. There are several references to this in the short essay by Samir Kassir, L'infelicità araba, published posthumously in Italy in 2006. In his analysis, Kassir warns against falling into the dual trap that has ensnared the Arab world for the last forty years: on the one hand the Orientalist reading that lays the blame on Islam for the delayed modernisation of this part of the world, and on the other the temptation to heap responsibility for all evils on the West. To avoid this risk, as Kassir sees it, the Arabs have to take their destiny into their own hands, shrugging off victimism and coming to terms with modernity.

    Description: Besides its temporal semantics, the imperfect tense can express a wide range of modal meanings, which occur most typically in spoken varieties of language. The paper contrastively explores the modal uses of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian, a Romance and Slavic language respectively, and shows to what extent they are similar or diverge in the two languages. Although the basic notional configuration of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian seems to be exactly the same, occurrences of modal meanings are less frequent in Bulgarian than in Italian. Possible explanatory hypotheses suggest that the peculiarities of the tense system (dedicated future-in-the-past form; specific narrative mood), as well as the different syntactic rules governing the sequence of tenses in related sentences, put major constraints on the development of modal meanings of the imperfect tense in Bulgarian.

    Description: Just over 150 epistolary pieces, from the twentieth-century archives of Florence and Rome, are published for the first time thanks to Alberto Baldi’s careful transcription, which does not only allow the reconstruction of the story of a friendship born around the pages of newspapers and consolidated over time to involve the partners of the two writers (Gianna Manzini, Lina Baraldi and Luisa Babini), but also follows Giuseppe Dessí’s presence in one of the most widely read newspapers in Rome. The editorial correspondence, started early by Falqui, the “mover of culture” and through frequency peaks (from 1948 to 1958), soon turned into the advice of a sympathetic reader who, despite the political dissensions for the conservative line of the newspaper "Il Tempo", deserves the credit of having continued a collaboration which would nourish some of the writer’s most significant collections of short stories. The book ends with thirty-eight narrative texts by Dessí, scattered on the «third page» and never collected in a volume before.

    Description: Enrico Fermi, Nobel Prize for Physics in 1938, taught at the Royal University of Florence. Fermi's stay in Florence was short and only lasted two academic years (1924-25 and 1925-26); during those years, he taught "Mathematical Physics" and "Rational Mechanics” courses. This volume contributes to the reconstruction of this quite unknown period of Fermi's life, marked however by the publication of the Fermi statistics, which is also the foundation of the physics of semiconductors, and therefore of modern electronics. The text also features Enrico Fermi’s "Lessons of Rational Mechanics” to Science students and to students from the two-year preparatory course for Engineering studies during the aforementioned time span. The topics Enrico Fermi addressed in his lectures include kinematics and point dynamics, kinematics and statics of rigid systems and system statics in general. Lastly, the lessons contain «Lagrangia»’s equations and some elements of hydromechanics. This book is the first of a series of publications associated with the magazine «Il Colle di Galileo» by Firenze University Press.

The essays are divided into twelve sections, each representing a study prospect, thus illustrating the vitality of the great tradition of Italian studies on language. The Conference confirms the importance of tradition, but also points up how the new areas of study – concerning the use of information infrastructures for the acquisition and conservation of the linguistic heritage – are by now pivotal both for research and for the establishment of essential resources for the defence and promotion of our language.     Description: This study analyses the crisis and transformations of theocracy as a political model in Europe in the first half of the 18th century. The work focuses on the transition from a positive and normative seventeenth-century consideration of theocracy, associated with the Jewish people, to its description in the 18th century as a universal, negative and primitive model. To this end, three authors are examined in their role of emblematic figures of this change, namely: Jacques Basnage, John Toland and Giambattista Vico. The study then highlights a radicalisation phase in mid-eighteenth-century France in the works by Nicolas Antoine Boulanger, and ends with the description of Boulanger’s theocracy in Diderot and d'Alembert’s Encyclopédie.

    Description: This book offers a portrait of Leningrad in the 1960s, of its cultural life in those years permeated by a great hope for change. Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, is the heir and witness of the rise and fall of the 'Soviet hope' for an authentic change, its evolution and its inevitable decline. Through an analysis of the poems of Iosif Brodskij, Stefania Pavan maps out the process that led the intelligencija of Leningrad to disclose their claims, to give shape to the intellectual conscience of the city, and that subsequently constrained them to adopt the opposite approach, concealing – in a semi-visible space and in the myriad modes of the 'samizdat' – the values, names and images of the hope of change. Through an analysis of the linguistic peculiarities of The dregs , one of the 'classic' short stories of Boris Ivanov, Simonetta Signorini proposes a micro-history of the Russian language in the 60s, to which the study carried out by Ljudmila Zubova on the poems of Viktor Sosnora makes a useful contribution. The essay by Irina Dvizova highlights an aspect of the culture of Leningrad that can be considered extremely topical, in terms both of argument and as a method of reading literary history: the relation between the city and the Dostoevskij museum.

Stefania Pavan, attraverso l'analisi dei versi di Iosif Brodskij, disegna il percorso che ha condotto l'intelligencija di Leningrado nel 'disvelare' le proprie istanze, nel dare forma alla coscienza intellettuale della Città, e che l'ha vista costretta ad adottare successivamente la via inversa, a 'celare' in uno spazio semivisibile e tramite infinite modalità del 'samizdat', i valori, i nomi e le immagini della speranza del cambiamento. Con l'analisi delle particolarità linguistiche di La feccia, uno dei racconti 'classici' di Boris Ivanov, Simonetta Signorini propone una micro-storia della lingua russa negli anni Sessanta, alla quale lo studio di Ljudmila Zubova condotto sui versi di Viktor Sosnora dà un utile contributo. Il saggio di Irina Dvizova mette in evidenza un aspetto della cultura di Leningrado che è da considerare molto attuale sia come argomento che come metodo di lettura della storia letteraria: il rapporto fra la città e il Museo Dostoevskij.

    Description: The paper aims at dealing with didactics of Resistance through the relationship between the historical wtnesses and younger generations. As the first has lived the historical events he is going to narrate, younger generations constitute ideally the depositary of a rich and fragile set of informations. Based from this perspective, the paper is going to speak about a students' cycle of meetings organised in some schools in the province of Pistoia, between 2016 and 2018: the vocational institute "Martini" and the technical institute "Marchi". Meetings were held by SIlvano Sarti, who fought as partisan in the "Brigata Sinigaglia" in 1944 and who was appointed ANPI provincial president in Florence.

    Description: The death of the self passes through modern culture. However, chooses for himself the role of Psychopomp in obeyance not only to stylistic but also to profoundly ethical reasons. Bassani interrupts his narrative writing to give unity to the Romanzo di Ferrara and to entrust poetry with verses in the form of an epitaph. The testimonial "need” seems to emerge, giving meaning through the Prologue to the Giardino dei Finzi-Contini and to what will come after. It seems that the coherent constructive geometry of an entire work (intertwined since the beginning with refined European readings, figurative and Longhiani memories that Anna Dolfi highlights with wise precision) fully reveals the excess of the hourglass shape, of the conical structures that allow to glimpse distant flakes of light, pushing the real on the perilitant discrimination of the shadow. There, where the existing (objects, characters / people) is offered as a painted image alive only thanks to refraction and indirect projection of the gaze. This book investigates the strategies of Bassani’s memory and his playing on revelation / concealment, while deeply analysing the compositional paths of the texts in their allocative ways (the very privilege, in poetry, of the dialogic and epistolary form). Moreover, the work strongly questions the places of the distance, the introjection of mourning, the relationship between history and truth, between the code of reality and the effect of reality, the convergences between biography and culture (in the names of Caravaggio, Cézanne, De Staël, Morandi, Bacon; Dante, Manzoni , Tommaseo, Hawthorne, James, Dickinson, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Rimbaud ...), offering a new and suggestive interpretation of Bassani's “writing beyond the heart”.

    Description: Nowadays, lexicographical studies require an interaction with Digital Humanities. This volume presents the genesis and structure of the LBC database, a digital work support tool developed by the Multilanguage Cultural Heritage Lexicon Research Unit under the aegis of the University of Florence, which allows to carry out text research in six different digital corpora (French, English, Italian, Russian, Spanish, German). The authors illustrate the specificities of each corpus in terms of the chosen sources and propose lexicographical and translational uses.

    Description: Several associations in Italy are involved in pediatric disease and support for children and adolescents in conditions of medical complexity, with Tuscany boasting a territory particularly committed to social issues. This study aims to understand if currently in Tuscany there are associations engaged in promoting the sense of school belonging of the student with pathology. In order to achieve this objective, Tuscan associations have been mapped using five different mapping methods. Only one association was found through this mapping. The psychologist at the association was interviewed to understand the point of view of the association on this topic.

    Description: Seven European Regional Governments, together with Earlall and universities and research centres, have undertaken to refine a first draft of a Joint Progress Report of Regions on Implementation of European Lifelong Learning Strategies in the perspective of the Europe 2020 Strategy. The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate the usefulness and need to make an instrument available to European Regional Governments that helps to understand and evaluate the educational conditions of the regional population when compared with other regions. The Report shows how, over the decade, all the Regional Governments have undertaken to adapt training systems to the demographic dynamics characterised by the general ageing of the population and by migratory phenomena. Simultaneously the Report also shows the need for urgent improvements in some fields where the impact of policies is still too modest and where the risk of stagnation must be dealt with (for example, lifelong learning policies and NEET reduction).

    Description: Summer of 1968: two young Spaniards arrive in Rome with a letter and a project to export. They are Francisco (Kiko) Argüello and Carmen Hernández. So, fifty years after its foundation, the Neocatechumenal Way begins, and this volume is among the first historiographical researches about it. The overall picture arising from the comparative analysis of archival documents and unpublished texts places the Neocatechumenal Way within the historical events that affected the Church of Rome from the end of the Second Vatican Council to the present today. From the study of a minor reality, the work aims at shedding light on more general questions: from the reception of the Second Vatican Council to the relations between the episcopates; from the publication of the New Dutch Catechism to the organized entrance of laymen and laity in the Church; from the liturgical reform to 'liturgical liberalism'.

    Description: Dal XV secolo a oggi la Villa Tiburtina fatta costruire dall’imperatore Elio Adriano a Tivoli non ha mai cessato di stimolare l’interesse di studiosi attratti dalla quantità e qualità delle sue decorazioni e soluzioni architettoniche. Da tale interesse si è sviluppata una cospicua letteratura che oggi si arricchisce di un nuovo contributo, impostato su una chiave di lettura innovativa e passibile di suscitare spunti di riflessione sia nell’ambito archeologico, sia in quello a carattere storicoarchitettonico. Attraverso una accurata disamina delle prime rappresentazioni planimetriche dell’intero sito imperiale, sempre analizzate in relazione a quanto attualmente rilevato e rilevabile, nel volume si approfondiscono l’operato e i contributi di quanti, nel corso di circa due secoli, hanno rivolto la loro attenzione indagatoria alla Villa.     Description: Cartoline is a didactic method practised by the studies center "Yad Vashem". Starting from the observation and the study of an image, pupils and teachers think about it invlving themselves in a dynamic lesson stimulated by some guided-questions the teacher made. The teachers asked students to create a circle where some images are putted into. Students are asked to choose one of them and to write a words the image suggest them. The image is not contextualized and it shows daily item as a glass of milk or common action as petting an animal. Only afterward the teacher is going to contextualize the image: the glass of milk rapresent the amount of calories (184) assumed by prisoners in concentration camp. A discussion with students is launched.

    Description: After more than two centuries, this work presents the Russian version of “Dei delitti e delle pene” by Cesare Beccaria, translated by Prince Michail M. Šcerbatov. The edition, conducted on the autographed manuscript, is presented with the original Italian text. In the introductory study, the author traces the fundamental stages of the diffusion of Beccaria’s work in Russia, focusing in particular on the figure of Michail M. Isaev, scholar and translator of the masterpiece by Beccaria, who was the first to re-propose the modern organisation of the “Fifth” edition. The author gives an account of the version proposed by Šcerbatov, investigating its textual genesis and evaluating some aspects of the language used by the translator - first of all the lexicon used for the rendering of philosophical-political and legal terms.

    Description: The aim of this work is to identify the factors which contributed to create Lourdes' success. This analysis starts from the comparison between the 18 apparitions in Lourdes with some similar and contemporary episodes occurring in France, but with a somewhat different outcome, intended as success among the pilgrims. The initial historical, political and cultural contextualization work is accompanied by the analysis of some key aspects of the Catholic Church of that time. In reference to the purpose of the text, two areas are analysed more in-depth: medical science and literature, both closely connected with the question of miracles.

    Description: This volume offers the first Italian translation of Ljósvetninga saga, composed in the thirteenth century, belonging to the genre of íslendigasögur, the “sagas of the Icelanders”. The volume contextualizes the work in the Medieval Icelandic literature’s framework and offers an overlook at philological issues, such as, for example, the relationship between the existing manuscripts and the genesis of the saga. In addition, the volume also provides a literary analysis of the style, characters and text, based on some of the recent academic studies. The Ljósvetninga saga tells the story of the continuous struggles between two families in Northern Iceland for supremacy over the territory: through the extensive references to legal practices, it remains a precious example of medieval Icelandic culture.

    Description: Six chapters, divided into four paths, over a time span that from the 19th Century reaches the year 2000, have made it possible to give voice to canonical authors and outsiders, to prose writers and poets who investigate and confront on one of the most dramatical themes of the contemporary consciousness, that of oncological disease. A sort of oncography syllabary characterized by an extraordinary mixture of medical terminology and commonplaces, colloquial expressions and courtly loans from classical languages, foreign idioms, dialects and periphrastic language originated from 'oncologhems' used instead of the word 'cancer', as well as from synaesthesias, tropes, processes, remembrances, olfactory and visual perceptions and the inflation of interrupted works.

    Description: The 2002 Nobel Prize to Imre Kertész is a symptom: Hungary is now weltliterarisch. The historical process – which has seen Hungarian writers working since the 1970s to gain ontological autonomy for their field, to write in a language that is not mendacious, to go beyond the 'modern' of real socialism to a 'postmodern' in which reality is not "described", but "employed", and to anthropic ends – is at a standstill, it is greeted abroad as a common heritage. According to Ungheria 1945-2002. La dimensione letteraria – which concludes a prolonged period of analytical work (see Scrivere postmoderno in Ungheria, 1995, and Scrittori ungheresi allo specchio, 2003) – the Hungarian contribution to the contemporary era lies in its sense for this anthropic function of literature (even though the context now seems to want to thwart this effort).

The fourth volume on the Collections of the Mineralogy and Lithology Section, published like the previous volumes by the Firenze University Press, fits perfectly in the series dedicated to the collections of the University's Museum System. The first part of the book describes in great detail the paths that led to the formation of the collections, starting with those dating to the Medici period and arriving at the specimens collected during recent expeditions. The second part illustrates and documents the extraordinary specimens of minerals, hardstone carvings and meteorites which represent the material patrimony of this section. Particular attention is given to the holotypes, the Elban Collection and the minerals of pegmatites, as well as the methods and solutions adopted to realize the project of the new museum exhibition set-up. When these violations are perpetrated by the actors called to protect the same rights and freedoms, the institutions must also prepare the educational devices which are required for their prevention. This volume intends to investigate the complexity of educational actions - primarily informal ones - which accompany the creation of the operators’ knowledge of the analysed systems, as well as the methods of their growth. In the era of “political posturing”, when the appearance was worth more than the essence, the understatement characterising Guido Sacconi’s not-so-short activity is even more surprising. A serious person, yet not an aloof one. This becomes easily understandable when reading this ironic reconstruction of politics 'as seen from the inside', made up of people in the flesh, with many strengths and flaws, who are mercilessly and tastefully described in these pages. In these same pages, Sacconi also has some bones to pick, which he must have collected during his career. Therefore, in a psychoanalytic key, Guido shows the Puer inside of him to those who have always seen him as a senex.

    Description: The book contains the philological edition of the corpus of Hittite texts currently collected under number 631 of the Catalogue des Textes Hittites by E. Laroche. They constitute the description of religious ceremonies celebrated in connection with the atmospheric phenomenon of thunder, interpreted as a manifestation of the god of the storm, which was the greatest divinity of the Hittite pantheon. The documents of major extension, presented with a transliteration and translation, are accompanied by a philological comment, aimed at highlighting their structure as well as lexical and grammatical peculiarities, and are introduced by an analysis of dating conducted on a palaeographic basis. The minor fragments are presented in transcription and, where possible, in translation. The text discusses the possible attribution of each fragment to the corpus, based on structure and content. The critical edition of the texts is preceded by an introductory chapter in which the nature of thunder-related festivities and their status in the Hittite cultural calendar are discussed.

    Description: The subject around which the contributions in this volume gravitate is the creation of a higher institute of engineering studies in Florence in the late nineteenth-century. On the eve of the unification of Italy, Florence was a promising centre for a Polytechnic, in view of the experience of the Corpo di Ingegneri di Acque e Strade, the precocious railway building, the importance of the mining sector and the solidity of the Istituto Tecnico Toscano. Despite this, unlike what took place in Milan and in Turin, the Istituto Tecnico Toscano was not transformed into a Polytechnic for the training of engineers. The reasons for this non-development can be traced to the lack of "industrialist" propensities in the managerial group that emerged victorious from the "peaceful revolution" of 1859, to a desire for independence from the national academic system built on the Casati law, and to a local demand for engineering skills that was less dynamic than expected. Consequently, the prevailing winds were those of "normalisation" blowing from the government, the universities and the most prestigious Colleges of Engineers. Nevertheless, Florence continued to represent an important technological centre, especially in relation to railway infrastructures, public works, and the mechanical engineering industries (for example Pignone and Galileo). In the end it was not until one hundred years after unification that the city finally became the seat of a Faculty of Engineering.

    Description: This volume collects the interventions of the post-doctoral fellows and PhD students of the Babes Bolyai University of Cluj Napoca, the University of Bucharest and the University of Florence (Doctorate in Mediterranean Languages and Cultures; Doctoral School of Comparative Languages, Literatures and Cultures, specialisation in Language, Literature, Philology: Intercultural Perspectives) presented at the seminar "Innesti e ibridazioni tra spazi culturali" (Florence, 22nd and 23rd November 2012). The contributions focus on the idea of literary and cultural hybridizations between different geographies. Some contributions, in particular those by the Romanian authors, account for the most problematic aspects of the contemporary world using interdisciplinary approaches.     Description: This volume presents the critical edition of Cammino di Dante, the first topo-chronographic summary of Dante's Comedy, written by the Florentine notary, ser Piero Bonaccorsi (1410-1477), for the friar of Santa Croce, Romolo de' Medici. The edition of the text is opened by a bio-bibliographical introduction on the author, that hightlights some new aspects of his notarial career, his literary activity and his relationship with notable figures of his age. The text then presents the seven manuscripts that handed down the Cammino, including four original manuscripts by Bonaccorsi, and analyses their textual relations. The edition offers a critical text based on the codex Riccardiano 1122, the last complete autograph edition, whose unreleased appendix is also published.

    Description: The volume collects the papers of colleagues, friends and collaborators submitted during the conference “L’infanzia nella figura di Enzo Catarsi” (“Childhood in the figure of Enzo Catarsi), held in Florence on April 29, 2014. The conference was organised by the Department of Education and Psychology of the University of Florence, in collaboration with the Tuscany Region and the Istituto degli Innocenti, to remember the scholar Enzo Catarsi. With his death, the Department, the Municipalities of Tuscany, the community of pedagogists, the students and his closest collaborators are missing a reference figure and a personality of great scientific, cultural and human importance, with high educational ideals, great humanity, optimism, lightness and enthusiasm.

    Camaldolesi e Vallombrosani nella Toscana medievale (2022)

    Description: In the context of the intense religious and social renewal known as “Gregorian Reform”, the Camaldoli Hermitage and the Vallombrosa Abbey, both located in the Tuscan territory, gave rise to two movements of reform inspired by the spirituality of the respective founders, which later became congregations belonging to the benedictine family. Motivated by common instances, the Camaldolese and the Vallombrosan Orders were similar in some of their essential features and in the dynamics of their expansion. This statement has been the starting point of this work, which aims to formulate a comparative overview of the territorial spread of these reforms in Tuscany, by recording the known settlements and making an inventory of the religious communities interested by this phenomenom, in order to gather a broad range of examples of the way these movements interacted with the local situations in the different areas of the region. The text is enriched by a carthographic appendix illustrating the chronology of these congregations’ development in medieval Tuscany.

    Description: This study’s aim is to deepen and enhance the linguistic dimension in Pier Paolo Pasolini's work, in the hope of restoring to his figure all the fullness of his intense and visceral relationship with the entire universe of languages. In the first part of the work we will investigate the various moments of Pasolini’s reflection on different expressive codes, from dialect to the language of cinema, from the 'Language of Reality' to the technological neo-Italian, promptly counterposed by the author’s linguistic experimentation. From here a broad lexical investigation starts - this study being the subject of the second part of this volume – with the aim of highlighting the author’s contribution to contemporary Italian (as to this day many 'keywords' from Pasolini’s universe still echo in Italian language, from «nuovo Potere» to «Palazzo», from «omologazione» to «mutazione antropologica»), thus confirming, once again, the inseparable relationship between reflection and language creativity, giving birth to a new, unique portrait of Pasolini as a 'linguist' and at the same time as an 'onomaturgist'.

    Description: Adulthood, once defined as a goal, today, has increasingly blurred outlines. While many speak of "adultescenza" (adult-adolescent) to describe the situation of those who interpret their adulthood in adolescent terms, today, we have, in one way, less certainty, in another way, more possibilities. For example, social sciences assign adolescents the task of choosing, where reality confirms that the choices taken in adolescence are not "for life," but circumstantial. Adolescents, rather, discover; adults rediscover. Thus, in adulthood, a detachment from the family of origin can take place which in adolescence was thought inconceivable: freedom, autonomy and responsibility can finally be considered adult goals, because the family of origin sometimes still has to-be-thought-of.

    Description: The volume examines the crucial and current connection between orientation, training and teaching professionalism. The various contributions make references to the new regulation on the subject, and focus on the institutional task and the pedagogical role played by orientation and training in creating a new physiognomy of the teachers’ professionalism: an initial orientation, an in itinere orientation and an outgoing orientation, alongside personal and professional training, intended as an open and ongoing process. These are two fundamental devices to grasp the complexity of being a teacher and working in schools nowadays. They are also accompanied by the traineeship, which in this context is examined through the report of a multi-year work.
