    Description: The volume collects the results of a course in “Assisted architectural design” which experimented with some innovative aspects in the teaching of Drawing. The new frontier is now represented by computer tools and very complex processing programs that incorporate all the previous techniques and propose new ones, becoming for the architect the main instrument of restorative and expressive potential. The experience involved the course students not only in learning the most up-to-date computer graphics programs, but above all in the development of this new expression technique in close relation to a design experience.

    Description: The perspective in graphic arts was born with a different form than the one used to present it in today’s courses, and it developed along with the transformations of scientific thought. This study disassembles from the inside the perspective images of a series of works, and then assembles them again, using clear graphic elaborations to show every step of the process. The sequence of the essays illustrates the evolution of role of the abacus and of measures in the works of the first artist-scientists, according to the scientific thought of the time. From Humanism to Baroque, perspective ceases to be a research on the truth of the eye. On the contrary, it becomes the search of the the eye’s deception, exploiting mechanical devices and complex theorems of geometric optics. The original quest is therefore replaced by technical virtuosity. The final repertoire offers a selection of examples showing the wideness of the theme over the centuries.

    La "stereotomia scientifica" in Amédée François Frézier (2022)

    Description: Cut-stone constructions are made of pre-hewn blocks dry assembled on top of each other. Owing to the formal complexity characteristic of these works, in order to design them it is necessary to have knowledge of the theory of lines, surfaces and their properties, as well as knowledge of the representation methods capable of rendering them on a plane surface. This knowledge set makes stereotomy the science that anticipates, in terms of theory and tools, modern descriptive geometry. These are the reasons for seeking the beginnings of descriptive geometry in stereotomy, that is, the reasons for the transformation of the mason's art of cutting stone into a bona fide science. Frézier's work fits among the last theoretical essays prior to the géométrie descriptive of Gaspard Monge. It is a treaty on solid geometry, devoted to the shape of the bodies, their intersections and the graphical methods necessary to represent them on a plane. In it the author draws up a rigorous theory that puts in place over two centuries of knowledge and experimentation on the subject of cutting stones.

    Description: The volume explores the category of urban spaces that are self-managed by the inhabitants and can be recognized as common goods: urban communities. These are defined as third spaces (neither public nor private) and recognized on the basis of seven characteristics. Furthermore, some proposals are made on how planning can adequately treat these places, through the comparison with some municipal policies and on the basis of the self-determination of experiences in order to build a city really in the hands of its inhabitants. In fact, urban communities can be seen as a strategic place for testing new relationships between citizens and between them and institutions.

    Description: Dissemination of scientific results is an important and necessary component of research activity. Nowadays research asks to be widely diffused and shared in a larger community in the effort to demonstrate its innovation and originality, so to enlarge network and obtain funds to keep working. In this context, PhD students, as part of scientific community and young researchers in training, have to understand the rule of publications to define the best strategy for the dissemination of their research.     Description: The Modern Age perspective was born as a bridge between art and science. It made art necessary and science visible; its breeding ground was architecture, which has always involved the lovers of one and the other in synergy. The field of thought in which perspective was conceived focused on the highest topics: the universe and the earth. Starting from astronomers-geographers and topographers, perspective was built over time as a discipline and a scientific-artistic method, systematically deriving a theorem from another, in a crescendo of complexity, which has sometimes taken on acrobatic forms, not open to evidence. The perspective techniques developed over time have accompanied the figures of architecture and of the graphic arts in their changes. Nowadays, the current information technologies make it possible to study the models of this artistic field with the confidence of being able to bring to light a new story about it. This volume collects the essays of 44 researchers who, within an Italian National Project launched in 2011 and coordinated by Riccardo Migliari (from Rome), joined the call of the group in Florence, which Maria Teresa Bartoli directed, in order to illustrate their method of cultural and technical approach to the theme through a case study: be it represented by a painting or by the passages of a treatise.

    Description: The present research on the theme of the design of furniture components starts from the didactic experience carried out within a Design Drawing Laboratory. The aim of the course is to apply the themes and methods related to representation and, at the same time, develop the graphic processing skills of each student. The text is divided into four sections: drawing as a science of representation, drawing as analysis, drawing as a communication tool, drawing as a project. Each single theme is then divided into a theoretical part and a corresponding practical part with one or more exercises.

    Description: This book explores several aspects of the variegated relationship that connects the operational principles of a structure to its translation into written form, between the laws that govern its structural rationale and the technical solutions that decree the feasibility of its construction. This is considered an essential subject for the training of aspiring engineers, whose education is often strongly conditioned by a didactic approach that divides the knowledge of construction into circumscribed and independent disciplinary units. This same approach negatively connotes the progressive transformation of the professional profile of the contemporary engineer, from the original figure of a designer of technical solutions to that of a specialist-assessor of structural performance. The result is that such figures sometimes lack the critical instruments inherent to a knowledge that does not begin and end within models of scientific explanation, but has to be comprised within a broader cultural dimension featuring the coexistence and mutual nourishment of different branches of knowledge, including History, Science and Design through to the ultimate dynamics of Architecture.

    Description: The book was conceived as a collection of lectures given to students of Architectural Drawing courses and is intended as an orientation tool among the different fields of the discipline: from the preparatory phase of training to graphics, to the application of the principles of geometric representation, to conventional technical representation of architecture. In addition to the invention drawing, ample space is dedicated to survey drawing, applied first to the depicted architecture and then to the real city. Due to the character of the volume, intended as a learning tool, the texts are presented in the form of working notes with the main purpose of illustrating the pictures.

    Trasformazioni geometriche e figure dell'architettura (2022)

    Description: The volume examines a controversial architectural treatise written at the end of the 17th century by the Spanish mathematician and polygrapher Juan Caramuel de Lobkowitz. The work, entitled Architectura Civil Recta y Obliqua, is often remembered by historians in relation to the debate that binds its author to an illustrious project: that of the Berninian colonnade in St. Peter's square. The goal of the research is to highlight, through direct and systematic reading of the work and its unusual drawings, the contributions that Caramuel had the opportunity to draw from the geometric and mathematical research of his time, in a sort of anastylosis of the Caramelian aesthetic, allowing a rigorous reading of his peculiar designed architectures.
