    Description: This study analyzes the discursive construction strategies that structured the cognitive model of Mexican national identity in four generations of textbooks (1960–2009). Using tools from the fields of Cognitive Linguistics and Critical Discourse Studies, the sociocognitive analysis is completed by a social-interactional empirical study drawing on the theoretical and methodological framework of Narrative Studies.

    Description: Markov chains represent a classical topic of probability theory that has a large number of applications in different areas, including mathematics, computer science, physics, biology, natural science, economics and several others. Typical examples of Markovian models concern for instance the analysis and interpretation of DNA sequences, voice recognition and the design of procedures for analysis and browsing of the web. In computer science and in particular in the algorithmic area Markov chains have been used to introduce the so-called Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, which allow us to design probabilistic approximation algorithms for solving NP-hard problems. This work presents Markov chains and their algorithmic applications in a mathematical style, with a didactic spirit. It mainly has educational purposes, and it is specifically designed for teaching these topics in Italian university courses at a master level.

    Description: Le catene di Markov rappresentano un argomento di studio classico, di carattere matematico e probabilistico, che ha trovato un grande numero di applicazioni in varie discipline, dall’informatica alla matematica, dalla fisica alla biologia e alle scienze naturali, dalla sociologia all'economia e in molti altri contesti. Esempi tipici di modelli markoviani riguardano l'analisi e l’interpretazione di sequenze di DNA, il riconoscimento di segnali vocali, il disegno di procedure di esplorazione e analisi della rete web. In un ambito informatico e soprattutto algoritmico le catene di Markov hanno dato origine ai cosiddetti metodi Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), che consentono di definire algoritmi probabilistici di approssimazione per problemi difficili dal punto di vista computazionale. Questo testo presenta le catene di Markov e alcune loro applicazioni algoritmiche in uno stile matematico con un taglio principalmente didattico, rivolto in particolare agli studenti dei corsi di laurea magistrale a carattere scientifico delle università italiane.

Dall’Inghilterra, dove la passione orticola ha una sua storia ben documentata, le donne protagoniste nella storia del giardino si sono spinte verso l’America, l’Australia, la Nuova Zelanda, l'Asia, superando i confini del nostro vecchio mondo ma portando sempre con sé le loro radici, ripiantate in terre lontane. Francesca Orestano, Anna Rudelli e Anna Zappatini hanno tracciato queste storie avventurose, e le lezioni che se ne possono trarre, anche coltivando un semplice geranio sul davanzale della finestra.

    Description: The book is a contribution, on one side, to the ongoing reflexion and sharing of best practices on student centred teaching and cooperative learning in higher education and, on the other and widely speaking, on role management or effective leadership models in the pedagogical and organisational University context. It addresses teachers from all the disciplines and students. Based on, and moving from, the author’s personal experience as an international law scholar, this work suggests different possible perspectives in disclosing disciplinary literacy, eg the legal one, through the lens of relational competencies. The fil rouge across the book is role awareness, i.e. the ability to understand the space of the role (as well as sovereignty in international relations) as an area to fill and, if pertaining to others, as a zone to respect. Nevertheless, within this perspective and setting as starting point the fact that the ultimate task of every teacher, and university professor, is blending all the forms of knowledge in the service of effective instruction, thus aiming at accompanying classes not only in assimilating (international law) knowledge, but also competencies, the author explores if an experience-based relational training of teachers can have a transformative and improving effect on the teaching methodology, within an approach that seeks to change the focus from teaching to learning. In the systemic frame and linked to the field of international law and relations, the space of the role overlaps with the notion of sovereignty, as well as with the nature of the International Community as an interdependent, original, necessary and (formally) equal society. Interpersonal and international relations thus seem to be traced back to a common system.

    Description: Il volume è un contributo alla discussione sulla didattica innovativa e sulla gestione dei ruoli nell’Università. Si rivolge ai docenti e alle docenti, ma anche alla componente studentesca. Basato sulla personale esperienza dell’autrice, dischiude altri mondi possibili. Centrale è il tema della consapevolezza del ruolo, ovvero la capacità di riconoscere lo spazio del ruolo come un luogo che è necessario riempire e, se di altri, rispettare. In una tale prospettiva, orientata ad accompagnare l’aula, non solo nell’apprendimento della disciplina ma anche nella trasmissione delle competenze, l’autrice si interroga sul come una formazione di carattere esperienziale di impostazione sistemico-relazionale possa influire in senso trasformativo e migliorativo della metodologia didattica, con un approccio che mira a spostare il focus dall’insegnare all’apprendere. Nel diritto internazionale, per esempio, il tema dello spazio del ruolo si rispecchia in quello dell’estensione della sovranità nelle relazioni fra Stati e dei caratteri di interdipendenza, necessaria appartenenza, originarietà e parità della e nella Comunità internazionale. Le relazioni interindividuali e le relazioni internazionali sembrano così ricondotte ad un unico sistema.

    Description: AMALPI Trek is a cross-border geotouristic trail that, from the Maloja Pass to the Gotthard region, leads along ancient and new routes, with their natural and anthropic peculiarities (waterfalls, villages), historical-archaeological (such as the excavations in Piuro) and gastronomic (such as foods prepared in soapstone pots, “lavecc”), to discover the processes that drastically change the Alpine territory: the great landslides of the past, present and future. The guidebook allows anyone to enjoy in another way the beauty of the crossed valleys, perhaps walking only short distances, or reaching them by other transportation means (preferably public or zero emissions), relying on interpretations provided by scholars, to understand the landscape evolution and the history of landslides. The hope is to help in promoting a new curiosity towards mountains and what animates them, landslides, increasing the risk awareness in the Alpine environment.

    Description: AMALPI Trek è un itinerario geoturistico transfrontaliero che, dal Passo del Maloja alla regione del San Gottardo, conduce lungo antichi e nuovi percorsi, con le loro peculiarità naturali e antropiche (cascate, borghi), storico-archeologiche (come gli scavi a Piuro) e gastronomiche (come i piatti preparati nelle pentole in pietra ollare, i lavecc), alla scoperta dei processi che drasticamente modificano il territorio alpino: le grandi frane, passate, presenti e future. La guida permette a chiunque di gustare in altro modo la bellezza delle valli attraversate, magari percorrendone a piedi solo brevi tratti, o raggiungendole con altri mezzi (meglio se pubblici o a zero emissioni), potendo contare su chiavi di lettura fornite da studiosi, per comprendere l’evoluzione del paesaggio e la storia dei fenomeni franosi. L’auspicio è quello di contribuire a promuovere una nuova curiosità verso le montagne e ciò che le anima, le frane, aumentando la consapevolezza del rischio in ambiente alpino.

A team of experts in the field have produced an information platform based on an orderly and coordinated set of measured parameters. Each growth habit within a species is defined and discussed, terms are defined (glossary), objective tree growth data are presented, and reference cultivars are provided. Illustrations represent a useful visual guide to each growth type. This monograph thus seeks not only to describe the main tree habits found in five important stone-fruit species but also to identify the morphological keys unlocking their characterization and, in the process, provide some suggestions for their practical exploitation.

Ogni portamento, per ciascuna specie, è stato definito sulla base di dati oggettivi ottenuti su gruppi omogenei di cultivar ed in particolare su idonee cultivar di riferimento. Oltre alle illustrazioni grafiche dei singoli portamenti e ad un approccio comparato tra le diverse specie, sono fornite anche le definizioni dei termini specifici (glossario). Il testo si propone quindi, non solo di descrivere i principali portamenti presenti in alcune specie di fruttiferi, ma anche di contribuire all’individuazione e alla definizione delle chiavi morfologiche ai fini della loro caratterizzazione, oltre a fornire suggerimenti utili per il loro pratico sfruttamento.

    Description: The City and the Unconscious in the Global Age. Can we observe plants "with different eyes" and identify the connections between mathematical sciences and plant biology?     Description: Corpus linguistics, German linguistics and the Teaching of German as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache – DaF) are strictly connected disciplines (cf. Fandrych/ Tschirner 2007). This notwithstanding their combination for descriptive, applicative and didactic purposes is still not widespread. In university teaching theory and practice, the connections are in fact mainly binary, between corpus linguistics and German linguistics, between German linguistics and DaF and between corpus linguistics and DaF. On the contrary, the present volume aims at bringing out the interconnections among all three disciplines; the use of empirical approaches intended to foster the development of linguistic and crosslinguistic awareness will play a central role. The focus of the volume is on morphology and syntax, two linguistic domains that are traditionally considered central to grammar and that are well suited to be understood and analysed by means of corpus linguistics corpus linguistics. Their analysis may serve as a model for other linguistic levels.

Obiettivo del presente volume è quello invece di far emergere le interconnessioni tra tutte e tre le discipline; svolgerà un ruolo centrale l’introduzione ad approcci di tipo empirico volti a favorire lo sviluppo della consapevolezza linguistica e crosslinguistica. Il focus del volume è su morfologia e sintassi, due ambiti linguistici tradizionalmente considerati centrali per la grammatica e che si prestano particolarmente ad essere compresi ed analizzati mediante la linguistica dei corpora. La loro analisi potrà servire da modello per altri livelli linguistici.

Menelaus' wife must vindicate to her newfound husband that she is the real Helena, quite different from the ghost that the hero brought with him from Troy. The volume analyzes the various resources of re-characterization of Helena in Euripides' tragedy. ; Los personajes de la tragedia ática han sido ampliamente estudiados desde perspectivas en las que, a menudo, sus palabras y actos se explican a partir de nuestras nociones modernas sobre la mente humana y la personalidad, y desde valoraciones éticas y juicios morales ajenos a la Grecia clásica. El ensayo Rescatando a Helena se propone contemplar la caracterización de Helena en la tragedia homónima de Eurípides desde una perspectiva en la que la inteligibilidad humana del personaje no procede del supuesto descubrimiento de su conciencia interna o de su psique individual, sino de la adecuada subordinación de la caracterización de Helena a la acción de la obra en la que dicha caracterización está orgánicamente integrada. En vez de aislar al personaje del contexto dramático al que pertenece, como si estuviese dotado de una identidad idiosincrática, mi ensayo no intenta descubrir quién es realmente Helena leyendo entre líneas por debajo de la superficie textual, sino cómo sus palabras y acciones logran conmover eficazmente al auditorio original de la obra. Frente a nuestras lecturas eruditas y reflexivas de los textos conservados, los espectadores del siglo V a. C. acudían al Teatro de Dioniso para ver y oír las acciones y las palabras de los personajes trágicos dentro de un espectáculo más amplio que incluía música y danza. Es decir, la tragedia ática era ante todo una experiencia emocional, no una ocasión para la introspección psicológica o la reflexión filosófica.

This book investigates the writing of history in Greek and Syriacduring this period through the study of four later chronicles which used lost 7-8th-century sources. The materials shared by these texts shed light on the sources themselves and on the practice of "memory keeping" among Christians in such a crucial age.

    Description: On the eve of the fall of the Wall, the European Community is a mature and evolving reality, already able to compete commercially with the United States and grappling with the complex design of the great Single market. At the same time, it has developed political ambitions, with the first forms of foreign policy coordination between Member States, and the start of the long road towards Economic and Monetary Union. Lorenzo Natali (1922-1989) is one of the least known protagonists of this story. Since the birth of the Communities with the Treaties of Rome, and in the following thirty years he accompanied with his political career the fundamental steps of European construction, first as a minister and, from the late Seventies, as Italian commissioner in Brussels, the longest in terms of term of office. He and the Directorates-General he leads are responsible for some of the most significant achievements of that political season, from the conclusion of the great enlargement to the South to the implementation of the Community's first environmental policy, ending to the consolidation of a fruitful and equal dialogue between Europe and the global South. This book aims to give a first glimpse of light on his figure and his political action.

    Description: The volume Contro Bernardino. Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi is the result of the discovery of unpublished documentation on the trials - only partly known - against the abacus master Amedeo Landi, who taught the Milanese merchants at the Broletto. This is an exceptional case not only because only one witness to the activity of the Milanese inquisitorial court in the Middle Ages (whose documentation has been entirely lost) was known until now, but also because of the role of the ecclesiastical court and its officials. The wealth of information and themes has prompted a team effort by the professors of the Department of Historical Studies to clarify the many aspects (political, religious, economic, documentary) of an event that shows the vitality of 15th-century Milan, in which the protagonist, the teacher Amedeo Landi, in an attempt to protect his students, clashes with the most important preacher of his time, Brother Bernardino of Siena, whose canonisation process is temporarily blocked precisely to shed light on the Milanese episode.

ITSs reflect a commitment to make up for the country’s lack of tertiary professional education, which is a major factor in Italy’s ranking among the countries with the lowest ratio of tertiary graduates in Europe. The National Recovery and Resilience Plan itself has allocated remarkable resources to strengthen these institutes. This historical critical edition presents the older of the two translations by Johann Engelbert Noyse. Its bilingual format allows the translation (Venice 1565) to be compared with the original Italian text. This edition is targeted at both a specialist audience and interested readers.
