Description: The Common Slavic *bogŭ ‘god’ displays an astonishingly rich derivation across Slavic languages, both numerically and semantically, with lexemes including almost all parts of speech: inflected (nouns, adjectives, verbs, pronouns) and not inflected (adverbs, connectives, prepositions). In this article the author pays special attention to the exclamations and other exclamation-related expressions containing this base word, as well as providing a description of the syntactic patterns from which such lexical units are generated and a brief analysis of the semantic processes (lexicalization, refunctionalization) from which they derive.

Description: “Learn from Gorky”: “conversion” of Japanese proletarian wrier Tokunaga Sunao. In the proletarian literary movement that flourished in Japan in the 1920s and 1930s, the main goal of proletarian literature was considered for intellectual writers to awaken the will to revolution in working readers. The writer from working class Sunao Tokunaga after the collapse of the revolutionary movement in 1933 began to write stories based on the life and attitude of the working people, offering to “learn from Gorky” and his autobiographical works that depicted the behavior and attitude of people at the bottom of society. At the same time, Tokunaga was involved in the colonial movement of the Japanese Empire of that time, because he, as a result of identification with the Japanese workers, lost sight of the expulsion and oppression of the indigenous people in Manchuria.

Description: Ukrainian motifs in A. S. Makarenko’s Pedagogical Poem. Makarenko’s Pedagogical Poem in the Stalin era was perceived as a eulogy to the collective, while in late Soviet times the dominance of the collective and the tendency to violent solutions already irritated the Russian reader. The German historian Goetz Hillig saw Makarenko as a world pedagogical genius, created his scientific biography, and published a scholarly edition of his writings in German. Elena Tolstaya looks at The Poem, set in post-revolutionary Ukraine, in the aspect of Russian-Ukrainian bilingualism, and looks for possible responses to the actualities of the late 20s – early 30s.

Description: Teaching of Russian as Foreign Language at the advanced level aims to teach students a wide range of linguistic and stylistic elements of oral and written speech typical of the modern Russian language. For a good professional training of students, teaching materials should be flexible and up-to-date, they should present the language actually used in everyday communication in any sphere of life and work. This textbook applies the model of communicative analysis of N.S. Valgina to the analysis of written texts of mostly non-literary type, which promotes the development of analytical competence at the textual, linguistic and stylistic levels. The course is intended for advanced Russian language students (B2 +) studying at the Master's level of linguistic studies.

Description: Moscow at the turn of history. About the “toponymic upheaval” and not only. The article digs into the urban (and political) geography of Moscow and how this is perceived in Italy in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. In particular, the investigation will focus on a number of volumes related to the late Soviet era that were published in Italy between the late 1980s and the mid-1990s. The authors are mainly newspaper and TV correspondents: Vittorio Zucconi (1944-2019, Il Corriere della sera, Si fa presto a dire Russia); Demetrio Volcic (1931-2021, RAI, Mosca. I giorni della fine); Enrico Franceschini (1956, La Repubblica) who is both a journalist (La fine dell'impero. Ultimo viaggio in URSS) and a novelist (La donna della Piazza Rossa). However, the texts index also includes a politician, Giulio Andreotti (L’URSS vista da vicino. Dalla guerra fredda a Gorbaciov), and a comic character, Mickey Mouse, who, in an October 1988 issue number, shows how in the years of perestroika people looked at the nascent (dying) country with both fear and curiosity. All the authors, regardless of their profession and orientation, have the feeling that they are also witnessing history through urban geography; it is no coincidence that all the texts analyzed, to varying extents, “photograph” buildings, streets, monuments... that is to say , “places,” which may be “old,” i.e. inherited from previous travelers or the result of historical, political or literary reminiscences, or “new” places, where a new path of history is being written.

Description: How the Steel Was Tempered in East Asia. Nikolai Ostrovsky’s novel How Steel Was Tempered (1932-34) tells the story of a young Ukrainian man named Pavel Korchagin who sacrifices his life and body to forge a steel-like spirit amid revolution, civil war, and postwar socialist construction. Although his physical injuries, which left him paralyzed and even blind, looks somehow grotesque, but his heroic self-sacrifice also had the power to inspire young readers. Regarded as an exemplary work of Soviet socialist realism, it was translated into many languages and read avidly at one time by left-wing readers in the West as well as in the Communist countries in the East. It was particularly influential in China, where it is so popular that even today it is invariably named as one of the favorite books of university students. This is in contrast to post-Soviet Russia today, in which the novel has lost the privileged position it once enjoyed and is no longer widely read. In China under the socialist regime, Ostrovsky’s novel was published in large numbers as suitable reading for young people and incorporated into school education. However, their active introduction in the public sphere alone does not explain their popularity. Chinese readers seem to have become deeply emotionally involved in the protagonist’s unsuccessful love affair with Tonya, a young girl whose bourgeois gestures and characterization must have been considered negative. As a result, the Soviet ideological novel has brought an unexpected meaning of European-style romantic love for Chinese readers. This presentation will trace the reception of Ostrovsky’s novel and the changes in the heroine Tonya’s image by comparing five adaptations: two Soviet films in 1942 and 1957, a Chinese lianhuanhua (serial picture book) in 1972, a Japanese manga in 1975, and a Chinese TV drama in 1999.

Description: Vladivostok is likened to the Bosphorus. The remoteness of the Far East made it difficult for the European part of the Russian Empire to recognise Vladivostok geographically. Therefore, through analogy to the Mediterranean, it was consciously integrated into the state. On the other hand, by using kanji combinations, which evoke images of traditional Japanese poetry, the Japanese created a sense of familiarity with Vladivostok. In most cases, regarding the social situation during the Revolutionary and Intervention War periods, researchers’ interest was restricted to the scheme of the conflict between the Red Army and the White Army and the victory or defeat of the October Revolution. However, more than 30 years after the dissolution of the USSR, the events of this period are now being examined by scholars mainly from the perspective of the residents and outsiders in various regions who, without knowing the consequences of the revolution, were both anticipating and anxious about significant social changes. The multicultural nature of the Far East is being discussed on the occasion of the centenary of the Siberian exodus. This article examines the cultural situation in and around Vladivostok, focusing on developments such as the education system and modernist currents in the arts. Vladivostok served as both an entrance to Siberia for the Japanese or other foreign troops and an exit for emigres.

Description: Reception of Russian Literature of the Silver Age in China. In the late 20th century, there emerged a significant cultural fervor for the Russian literature of the Silver Age within Chinese academic circles, primarily focused on literary studies. This article examines the history of translating Russian literature of the Silver Age in China and its level of research development. It is revealed that, on one hand, the initial attempts at translating literary works of the Silver Age into Chinese began in the first half of the 20th century, with notable activity during the May Fourth Movement and towards the end of the 20th century. Consequently, works by well-known writers had more opportunities to be translated into Chinese and gain attention from the academic community, while many works by lesser-known authors remained overlooked. On the other hand, Chinese scholars’ research on Russian literature of the Silver Age encompasses various literary genres such as poetry, novels, and dramas, with a focus on individual writers and their works. However, comprehensive and systematic studies in this field are still lacking. The examination of the history of translation and the level of research on Russian literature of the Silver Age in China contributes to academic progress, facilitates exchange and collaboration among scholars, provides reference materials and recommendations, and establishes a foundation for further in-depth research.

Description: The Ukrainian Theme in the Legacy of Vladimir (Ze’ev) Jabotinsky. Vladimir (Ze’ev) Jabotinsky (1880-1940) combined the characteristics of a convinced individualist, a nationalist-statist, and an equally convinced liberal with a tendency toward anarchism. He respected every people’s struggle for independence and called nationalism “the individualism of nations”. In his prose, essays and journalism, Jabotinsky was able to synthesize rational analysis with fearless intuition. This combination enabled him to predict both World Wars I and II and the Holocaust, long before Hitler invaded Poland. As a young man he lived for several years in Italy, which he considered his spiritual homeland. His views were formed, on the one hand, under the influence of Italian socialists, Garibaldi and Italian culture in general, and, on the other hand, under the influence of Ukrainian socialists, champions of independence. He maintained friendly contacts with some of them because he combined his Zionism with Ukrainianophilia, which survived despite the monstrous Jewish pogroms organized by the Petlyura troops in 1919-20. A special theme touched upon in the report is the supposed echoes of Ukrainian spontaneous individualism in Jabotinsky’s anarchist tendencies.

Description: Between the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century Franco Fortini was called to teach the history of literary criticism at the university. Of this experience, capital in the definition of his intellectual parable, we have many preparatory materials for the courses and seminars preserved in the fund dedicated to him of the Humanistic Library of the University of Siena. These are texts of considerable importance, whose themes intersect in a decisive way with the essayistic and poetic reflections that Fortini develops in the same years. This volume, for the first time, offers the transcription of these documents, rearranging and integrating them in order to offer the reader real critical essays on literature and society hitherto unknown.

Description: Korehito Kurahara and “Proletarian Realism”: Proletarian Literature in Japan in 1920s. This paper examines the proletarian literature movement that emerged in Japan in the 1920s, focusing on Korehito Kurahara, a leading proponent. Kurahara studied Russian literature and his theory, “proletarian realism,” was based on concepts promoted by the Russian Association of Proletarian Writers (RAPP). The paper analyzes two of Kurahara’s works from which proletarian realism originated. Both works are based on arguments between leaders of the proletarian writers’ organization and A. Volonsky. After Kurahara, Japan attempted to interpret proletarian literature from the perspective of literary history, which Kurahara incorporated into Japanese literature based on RAPP discussions. This suggests that Japanese proletarian literary theory developed under the influence of the Soviet Union.

Description: In those Slavic languages where the vocative inflectional case endings are used inconsistently, a statistically increased occurrence of vocative’s endings can be observed with nouns having a diminutive or hypocoristic semantics. Assuming that is the ‘affective charge’ of some specific nouns which enhances the probability of vocative case forms, the present paper has two aims: 1. to verify empirically in three Slavic languages (Serbian, Polish, Bulgarian) whether the vocative case is better preserved with nouns having a derogatory semantics (insults and bad words), 2. to establish which are the rules governing their use.

Description: Besides its temporal semantics, the imperfect tense can express a wide range of modal meanings, which occur most typically in spoken varieties of language. The paper contrastively explores the modal uses of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian, a Romance and Slavic language respectively, and shows to what extent they are similar or diverge in the two languages. Although the basic notional configuration of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian seems to be exactly the same, occurrences of modal meanings are less frequent in Bulgarian than in Italian. Possible explanatory hypotheses suggest that the peculiarities of the tense system (dedicated future-in-the-past form; specific narrative mood), as well as the different syntactic rules governing the sequence of tenses in related sentences, put major constraints on the development of modal meanings of the imperfect tense in Bulgarian.

Description: The volume contains Andrea Trovesi’s linguistic writings, hitherto scattered in various journals and miscellanies, all characterized by a pragmatic approach. The first part collects studies on Slavic vocative conducted from a comparative-historical perspective ranging from Proto-Slavic to modern Slavic languages. These focus in particular on categorical transformations of the vocative, its relics, so-called ‘new vocatives,’ and pragmatic values developed in the various Slavic languages. The second part of the volume is devoted to modal meanings of the imperfect in a Slavic-Romance contrastive framework. The research privileges Bulgarian, but does not neglect the other Slavic languages of which it analyzes interesting residual peripheral aspects of such linguistic usage. Both lines of research presented here stand out for their originality and theoretical value considered from a point of view that leads from Slavic linguistics to the broader perspective of linguistics as a science of language.

Description: Historiography traditionally accepts periodization which considered the First World War as an absolute watershed in the European history as a whole. This text, through a collection of essays by Italian and foreign specialists, seeks to investigate the premises and the results of the First World War in a vast area ranging from the Balkans to the Caucasus normally underrated by historiography, focusing on a series of problems (of ethnic, cultural or political character) which due to their complexity must be faced in an overall framework that takes into account the pre-war period and the first two decades of the twentieth century. The works reveal a very complex and stimulating picture, which leads us to reflect on long-term events and problems that involved all the countries that participated to the regional events, full of consequences for the peoples who lived there.

Description: Pietro Gasparri (1852–1934) was a famous jurist, a valued university professor and an able papal diplomat. He headed the Secretary of State and the Roman Curia from November 1914 to January 1930, during a crucial period in the history of Europe and of the Papacy. This book – the outcome of research seminars on “The international policy of the Holy See” held in Rome between 2013 and 2016 in collaboration with the Università europea di Roma and the Institut catholique de Paris – gathers the contributions of an international group of historians and archivists, seniors and PhD students. It focuses on Gasparri in his role as Secretary of State: a central figure of the government of the Church in the twentieth century.
Description: Pietro Gasparri (1852–1934) fu un insigne giurista, un apprezzato docente universitario e un abile diplomatico pontificio.

Description: A poet, critic and translator, Giovanni Raboni is one of the most important figures in the literary panorama of the second half of the 20th Century. This volume sheds light on his twofold journey in the chaotic magma of the 50s and 60s: on the one hand the encounters and discoveries of a passionate and keen critic and reader, on the other the first steps of a young poet in search of his own voice . Young Raboni’s path arises from a courageous confrontation with the urgencies of his time, and is nourished by a profound dialogue with "poetry in flesh and blood", "poetry that is made". A path in which the pen of the "poetry reader" often accompanies, with his mild but severe firmness, the poet's free and autonomous hand.

Description: The volume retraces the influence of futuristic typographic experimentalism on the dada photomontage, investigating the progressive transformation of the alphabetical fragment into an image in the research of the first avant-garde movements. Moreover, it analyses the avant-garde reinterpretation of the neue Typographie in central-east-Europe. From the "Words-in-Freedom" to the Lautgedicht, from the Manifesto Poems to the first photomontages, the role of typography in the affirmation of two postulates of the twentieth-century artistic culture is analysed: the use of the word is the form and the value of the procedure is the meaning of the work. A chronology, commented on by photographic and documentary materials, which also offers the reader an instrument of exegesis in synergy with the critical text, paying particular attention to the testimonies of the Dadaists in the context of the neo-avant-garde movement.

Description: This book is the second part of the work devoted to the tourist guide as a meeting place between lexicon and images of cultural heritage, a work resulting from the colloquium which took place on June 11 and 12, 2015 in Pisa and Florence. This volume focuses on the image, as a representation of reality but also as a place from which the imagination can be exercised by evoking mental representations (the imaginary). The three proposed sections (I. Les images du voyage; II. L’art dans le guide; III. Les guides entre imaginaire et propagande) intend to suggest routes of reflection around the tourist guide, an object that has never ceased to transform and which, through the lexicon and images, has been able to transmit the most different and picturesque cultural heritages.

Description: The volume reproduces the documentary path of the exhibition Florence in the war 1940-1944 promoted by the Historical Institute of the Resistance in Tuscany on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Resistance and Liberation. Introductory contributions illustrate the work in progress who accompanied the exhibition project and intend to guide the reader through a series of historiographical questions at the center of the exhibition: the centrality of the 1940-1943 phase, which has hitherto remained in the background, the economic transformations, the knots of consent and social control, the characters of the German occupation, the role of the Church and the complex plot of the Florentine Resistance. The aim of the research was to closely investigate the impact of the war on the population of a large urban area, trying to highlight its specificity and connections with the national framework.

Description: This book is a continuation of the lively debate launched in Dall'oggetto estetico all'oggetto artistico which the same editors published with Firenze University Press. The argument of the book is the organic link connecting the two thematic axes that define the ambit of aesthetics: the theory of perception and reflection on the arts. The apparent tautology of the title is intended to stress how the interpenetration of perception and work of art is structural and organic, thus calling up the theoretical urgency of this problem for an effective understanding of the dynamics of the sense of art as a "symbolic form" in which the relation between the mind and the world is embodied in an exemplary manner. The book is divided into three sections. The first presents nuclei of reflection emerging from unconventional contemporary perspectives. The second addresses various angles of the theory of perception. Finally, the third part explores several cases in which contemporary artists have tackled the link between expressive practice and the articulation of perception.

Description: Unfinished work or interrupted work… It is difficult to find a definition, to identify the theme, to distinguish chance from intentionality. Few 'genres' and / or variations express as the 'unfinished' the same need for what is external to the work and which somehow completes it, bringing the work in a privileged position to create a harmony with our restless modernity. No wonder that in literature, in addition to what has been brutally interrupted, the letters, the diaries, the chronicles of disease and suffering are naturally suspended works. No wonder either that incompleteness accompanies the writings referring to unsolved issues, hidden traumas, silent melancholy. Dictated by choice or by distinct degrees of incapacity, the temptation of the unfinished pursues, urges, deludes its author... The private writings, the sketches, the projects, the papers testify the path necessary for the work to develop and conquer its shape. This book is rich and suggestive and has been conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi. Like its very object, the work is drafted in the perspective of the unfinished and questions some of the many possible examples, along a diachronic arc that goes to literature at figurative arts, theatre, cinema: from Leonardo to Blake, from Ariosto to Stendhal, from Dossi to Gadda, from Kafka to Borges, from Sarraute to Morante, from unknown writers affected by 'cancroregina' to the last Pirandello staged by Tiezzi, up to Fellini of the impossible Mastorna ... At the centre of the volume the readers will find a section with the typescript pages and the unpublished notebooks of / for the work La scelta by Giuseppe Dessí. They lead to the limits of white space, where the chambre claire fixes what is hidden beyond the writing with few, rarefied signs.

Description: Giorgio Trentin (1917-2013), eldest son of the anti-fascist exile Silvio and brother of the unionist Bruno, was one of the greatest connoisseurs, enthusiasts and 'defenders' of engraving art in Italy. With this conference promoted a few months after his death, the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice and the Centro documentazione e ricerca Trentin have brought together the researches of scholars from different backgrounds and the testimonies of those who knew Giorgio Trentin. The aim was the one of restoring unity to the two 'faces' of his figure: on one hand the civil and anti-fascist militancy (a characteristic and unmistakable mark of the family) on the other the commitment in the artistic field, which represented personal space of Giorgio or, better, his personal declination of that common militancy. To him, in fact, the engraving technique was an indispensable paradigm of moral rigour and the search for truth.

Description: The volume analyses the representation of ceramic artefacts appearing in some Tuscan artistic works dating back to the 14th and 15th century and aims to combine the data emerging from iconographic sources with those relating to material and written documentation. It also aims to grasp the potential of iconography, trying to understand the extent to which it is possible to identify archaeologically well-defined cultural areas; it also attempts to establish whether the representations of specific details of everyday life correspond to a realistic description of everyday life itself, or rather are a reflection of feelings of curiosity, amazement, ambition or appreciation for the beauty of the objects. The study highlights how iconography is able to integrate our knowledge on the medieval ceramic productions and on the social context of use of specific vascular forms and types.

Description: This book is the first volume of a collection of articles devoted to the tourist guide as a meeting place between lexicon and images of cultural heritage, a work resulting from the conference which took place on June 11 and 12, 2015 in Pisa and Florence, organized by the Research Unit Lessico dei Beni Culturali. The texts presented are the result of a joint reflection by specialists from different fields: linguistics, art history, architecture, photography, literature and geography to name a few. The two volumes analyze the tourist guide and the other works that accompany the trip as places of creation and transformation of the experience of real or virtual travel, participating as such in the creation of the tourist imaginary of places and cultural objects they describe.

Description: A gripping essay on the role that Italian intellectuals played in the organization and scheduling of Swiss public radio between the Fascist period and the so-called Anni di Piombo (Years of Lead). The book What was the role of Italian intellectuals in the history of Swiss radio broadcasting culture? And what images of Switzerland and Italy were conveyed between 1930 and 1980? Ever since it began in the 1930s, Italian-language Swiss radio, a national public service broadcaster addressed to a linguistic minority, drew from intellectual resources external to its own political borders, a characteristic that contributed to defining its profile. During the Fascist period, for example, Italian intellectuals could express themselves from the microphones of this radio with a freedom that they were not allowed in their home country: Benedetto Croce’s 1936 speech is a memorable case in point. Subse-quently, when the interview and debate formats tended to undermine that of the radio lecture, journalists and writers such as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Eugenio Montale took advantage of the debating space that Swiss Italy offered them. By analysing the written and audio sources, many of which unpublished, Nelly Valsangiacomo’s essay reconstructs a complex as well as fascinating radio broadcasting panorama, brought to life by the voices of some of the greatest Italian intellectuals, such as Elio Vittorini, Maria Corti, Indro Montanelli, and Dario Fo. Voices that can now be listened to once again thanks to a web page completing the book: www.rsi.ch/dietroalmicrofono (Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana/Italian-language Swiss Radio and Television)
