    Lorenzo Natali e la politica comunitaria: L’”altra Italia” in Europa (1977-1988) (2024)

    Description: On the eve of the fall of the Wall, the European Community is a mature and evolving reality, already able to compete commercially with the United States and grappling with the complex design of the great Single market. At the same time, it has developed political ambitions, with the first forms of foreign policy coordination between Member States, and the start of the long road towards Economic and Monetary Union. Lorenzo Natali (1922-1989) is one of the least known protagonists of this story. Since the birth of the Communities with the Treaties of Rome, and in the following thirty years he accompanied with his political career the fundamental steps of European construction, first as a minister and, from the late Seventies, as Italian commissioner in Brussels, the longest in terms of term of office. He and the Directorates-General he leads are responsible for some of the most significant achievements of that political season, from the conclusion of the great enlargement to the South to the implementation of the Community's first environmental policy, ending to the consolidation of a fruitful and equal dialogue between Europe and the global South. This book aims to give a first glimpse of light on his figure and his political action.

Ha al contempo sviluppato ambizioni di natura politica, con le prime forme di coordinamento della politica estera tra Stati membri, e l’avvio del lungo percorso verso l’Unione economica e monetaria. Lorenzo Natali (1922-1989) è un protagonista tra i meno conosciuti di questa storia. Presente sin dall’atto di nascita delle Comunità, nei trent’anni seguenti accompagna con il suo percorso politico i passaggi fondamentali della costruzione europea, dapprima come ministro e dai tardi anni Settanta come commissario italiano a Bruxelles, il più longevo per durata d’incarico. A lui si devono in particolare alcuni dei traguardi più importanti di quella stagione, dalla realizzazione del grande allargamento a Sud all’implementazione della prima politica ambientale della Ce, fino al consolidamento di un dialogo paritario allacciato tra l’Europa e il Sud globale. Questo libro intende restituire un primo squarcio di luce sulla sua figura e la sua azione politica

    Description: Die schon zu Lebzeiten durch Anhänger und Unterstützer begonnene Mythisierung Friedrichs II. und seines Enkels Konradin hat sich im Laufe der Zeit nicht nur in Deutschland, sondern auch in Süditalien mit überraschenden Folgen lebendig erhalten. So war nämlich die Erinnerung an Konradin in dem kleinen Ort Aliano in der Provinz Matera (Basilikata) selbst zu Zeiten Carlo Levis, der dort während des Faschismus im Exil lebte, fassbar – man sprach vom letzten Staufer wie von einem Nationalhelden und betrauerte noch immer seinen Tod. Abgesehen vom menschlichen Mitgefühl, das der Tod eines Jünglings in besonderem Maße weckt, gibt der unglückliche Versuch Konradins, seine Erbansprüche auf das Königreich Sizilien geltend zu machen, immer wieder Anlass zu historiografischer Debatte. Denn er ermöglicht einen Einblick in die politischen Prozesse, die zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht nur im Gebiet des Heiligen Römischen Reiches, zu dem Mittel- und Norditalien gehörten, vonstattengingen, sondern auch in den mit dem Reich interagierenden politischen Formationen, darunter das Königreich Sizilien. Der Band ist das Resultat einer Konferenz, die anlässlich des 750. Jahrestages der Hinrichtung Konradins und seiner adligen Gefährten 2018 an der Universität Neapel Federico II gehalten wurde.
    Description: La mitizzazione di Federico II e del nipote Corradino, iniziata quando erano ancora in vita ad opera dei loro sostenitori e aderenti, si è mantenuta inalterata nel corso del tempo sia in Germania sia Italia meridionale, e qui con esiti sorprendenti. Corradino era infatti ricordato nei primi decenni del Novecento nel piccolo centro di Aliano in provincia di Matera, dove Carlo Levi visse durante il Fascismo da confinato politico e dove dell’ultimo Svevo si parlava come di un eroe nazionale e si piangeva la morte. A prescindere dalla pietà umana, che scatta soprattutto quando la morte colpisce un adolescente, lo sfortunato tentativo di Corradino di far valere i suoi diritti ereditari sul Regno di Sicilia continua ad alimentare il dibattito storiografico, perché fornisce uno spiraglio di intelligibilità sui processi politici allora in corso non solo nell’area dell’Impero romano-germanico, di cui faceva parte l’Italia centro-settentrionale, ma anche in quella delle formazioni politiche che con esso si trovarono di volta in volta ad interagire, tra cui il Regno di Sicilia. Il volume è frutto del convegno tenutosi nel 2018 presso l’Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in occasione del 750° anniversario dell’esecuzione di Corradino e dei suoi nobili compagni.

    Description: The art of printing with movable type made its appearance in Perugia -then as now, the heart of Italy- in 1471, when the city was under the sway of Braccio Baglioni. Perugia was home to an important university which had been attracting students from all over Europe for more than a century. They found hospitality in two colleges, of which the ‘Sapienza Vecchia’, in particular, was accustomed to accommodating students from abroad. The colleges were themselves instrumental in assisting the work of the earliest printers, all of them foreigners; their enterprise flourished for about fifteen years before strong competition from larger printing centres, notably Venice, took control of the Perugian book market. A second phase in local book production started at the turn of the century under the aegis of two major players, the Cartolari family and Bianchino dal Leone. The history of the book in Perugia is characterized by a quality and originality which is not reflected in the modest quantities produced there, and the major bibliographers have always taken an interest in it. All that and more can be found in this book, the outcome of lengthy research based on detailed analysis of all known editions and archival documents, including a number of new discoveries.

    Description: Historiography traditionally accepts periodization which considered the First World War as an absolute watershed in the European history as a whole. This text, through a collection of essays by Italian and foreign specialists, seeks to investigate the premises and the results of the First World War in a vast area ranging from the Balkans to the Caucasus normally underrated by historiography, focusing on a series of problems (of ethnic, cultural or political character) which due to their complexity must be faced in an overall framework that takes into account the pre-war period and the first two decades of the twentieth century. The works reveal a very complex and stimulating picture, which leads us to reflect on long-term events and problems that involved all the countries that participated to the regional events, full of consequences for the peoples who lived there.

Questa ricostruzione è stata oggetto negli ultimi anni di una profonda revisione, con una rinnovata attenzione allo sviluppo della commercializzazione, anche a lungo raggio, dei prodotti alimentari e agli investimenti nelle campagne, rivelatisi tutt’altro che ininfluenti. Rispetto alle grandi panoramiche finora dominanti nel dibattito, questo volume presenta una serrata analisi di una realtà regionale – la Lombardia dalla fine del XIII secolo alla metà del XIV – considerata sotto molteplici punti di vista, dalla storia rurale a quella delle manifatture, dei prestiti e dei commerci, dagli aspetti fiscali e monetari a quelli militari e dell’assistenza. Ne esce un ritratto articolato, che senza negare gli elementi di difficoltà, mette in luce la sostanziale “tenuta” del sistema produttivo e sociale lombardo prima delle grandi epidemie del 1348 e del 1361.

    Description: Livio Odescalchi (1652–1713), nephew of Innocent XI, paid the price in his youth for the pope’s anti-nepotism policy, who chose to deny him any official position. During the same period, Livio had to submit to the oppressive control of his uncle, his testamentary guardian – an unhappy situation that, at the time, caused him to be considered a symbol of misfortune. In spite of this, the young man was able to lay the foundations for a strategy of economic and social ascent that would later bear fruit. After the death of Innocent XI, a period of compensation began, built on the accumulation of honours and possessions, financial investments, commissions and art trades, patronage, social celebrations, and international networks. This book, based on Roberto Fiorentini’s doctoral thesis (Aprilia 1987 – Washington 2019), examines both phases of Livio Odescalchi’s life, analysing them in the light of a considerable quantity of archival documents, some of which are completely unpublished.

Nonostante ciò, il giovane seppe gettare le basi per una strategia di ascesa economico-sociale che avrebbe dato i suoi frutti in seguito. Morto Innocenzo XI, ebbe inizio infatti un periodo di riscatto, costruito sull’accumulo di onorificenze e possedimenti, investimenti finanziari, committenze e commerci d’arte, mecenatismo, feste mondane e reti internazionali. Il volume, frutto della tesi di dottorato di Roberto Fiorentini (Aprilia 1987–Washington 2019), prende in esame ambedue le fasi della vita di Livio Odescalchi, analizzandole alla luce di una notevole quantità di documenti d’archivio, una parte dei quali completamente inediti.

Nach dem Tod Innozenz’ XI. begann eine Zeit der Kompensation durch die Anhäufung von Ehrungen und Besitztümern, finanzielle Investitionen, Aufträge und Kunsthandel, Mäzenatentum, Feste und internationale Netzwerke. Das Buch, das aus der Doktorarbeit von Roberto Fiorentini (Aprilia 1987 – Washington 2019) hervorgegangen ist, untersucht beide Lebensphasen Livio Odescalchis und analysiert sie anhand einer großen Anzahl von zum Teil noch unveröffentlichten Archivdokumenten.

    Description: This work provides an in-depth description of the juridical framework in which the Italian book trade operated during the Renaissance. It is a multi-authored work that discusses issues related to intellectual, literary and artistic proto-property by taking into account some of the main urban centers of pre-unitary Italy such as Venice, Milan and Rome. It investigates the different legal systems put in place by the states and the dynamics that generated around them. The volume frames the topic at task within the general discourse on technologic innovation and state patronage in economic history hence exploring patenting systems (e.g., Florence and Venice) along with book privilege systems (e.g., Milan and Venice). In so doing it also investigates instances of conflicting interests occuring between the political and the economic sphere (e.g., Rome and Venice).

Comparative studies can highlight not only the similarities, but also the peculiarities that defined political, economic and social relations in medieval and modern Europe.     Description: Uno studio complessivo e di lunga durata dedicato agli Hucpoldingi, un oggetto di ricerca fino a oggi di difficile inquadramento per gli studiosi. Accostati al supposto governo comitale della città di Bologna dall’erudizione ottocentesca, gli Hucpoldingi sono rimasti per lungo tempo ai margini delle ricostruzioni di storia politica del regno italico altomedievale proprio per l’ampiezza d’azione che caratterizzò il gruppo parentale per più di due secoli, dal IX all’XI. La dispersione geografica dei fondi documentari che attestano la loro azione li ha resi inafferrabili a lungo, nel loro insieme. La ricerca affronta la ricostruzione delle vicende politiche dei diversi membri della parentela, del loro patrimonio e delle clientele loro connesse nei vari settori del regno. Esamina infine gli elementi peculiari del gruppo, dai quali emergono i caratteri del loro potere, le strategie di memoria e le nozioni di autoconspevolezza comuni ai diversi individui.

    Description: Il decimo volume delle Metamorfosi dei Lumi è dedicato a indagare il complesso fenomeno dell’emergenza del sentimento negli anni del Tournant des Lumières (1780-1820). Nonostante il Settecento sia sempre ricordato come il secolo della ragione, esso avvertì al contempo dolorosamente i limiti della razionalità stessa, intavolando un’inedita discussione sulla dimensione passionale. Precedentemente condannato come un fattore di turbamento della ragione, un malcelato residuo di animalità, il sentimento diventa la chiave di volta non solo della riflessione etica tardo settecentesca (caratterizzata dal fiorire della morale sentimentalista in opposizione al razionalismo cartesiano), ma anche il cuore di una nuova retorica incentrata sul patetico e di una riflessione politica che individua nella natura passionale dell’essere umano uno dei tratti dirimenti della sua socievolezza.

    Description: Fifteenth-century Bologna is one of the major Italian cities, home to a prestigious university and thriving industrial and economic center; in these conditions, ideal for the development of the early typographic art, the market of the manuscript book, with its world of copyists, illuminators, bookbinders, stationaries, soon adapts to the new way of production, fostering between XV and XVI century the emergence of some great families of booksellers-printers-publishers. Since the first decades of the sixteenth century, however, an overwhelming foreign book production is increasingly present on bolognese market: important printers like Vincenzo Valgrisi and Gabriele Giolito establish branches in the city, while in the law book sector the Lyonese publishing industry of Giunti is gaining momentum. The situation changes again in the second half of the century, when the market is remodeled following the conditioning by the ecclesiastical authorities and it extends to social strata previously excluded from cultural consumption. The work, which is based on a detailed investigation of the documentary sources, reconstructs for the first time a social history of the Bolognese book trade, both outlining the events of families and shops operating in the city, and opening the look at the relationships with the large foreign firms.

    Description: How do Torquato Tasso and Giovan Battista Marino react to the vigilant and normative context between the 16th and 17th centuries? Two evasive tactics designed to safeguard lewdness and enchantment in the poems are considered, starting from the relationship the two authors had with norms and rules: allegory on the one hand, and disguise on the other. Tasso's path is evolutionary and his opinion changes according to the internalisation of laws and values that lead to a re-evaluation of his initial opinions, while Marino transgresses the rules and uses typically defensive elements - such as allegory - overturning them and inventing a concealed offensive use. In this context, the paratextual allegories of Marino's Adonis, hitherto ill-considered by critics, are thus re-evaluated, and the Tasso route is reconsidered from a perspective that sees the two authors not as victims of a censorial system, but as active participants.

Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi is the result of the discovery of unpublished documentation on the trials - only partly known - against the abacus master Amedeo Landi, who taught the Milanese merchants at the Broletto. This is an exceptional case not only because only one witness to the activity of the Milanese inquisitorial court in the Middle Ages (whose documentation has been entirely lost) was known until now, but also because of the role of the ecclesiastical court and its officials. The wealth of information and themes has prompted a team effort by the professors of the Department of Historical Studies to clarify the many aspects (political, religious, economic, documentary) of an event that shows the vitality of 15th-century Milan, in which the protagonist, the teacher Amedeo Landi, in an attempt to protect his students, clashes with the most important preacher of his time, Brother Bernardino of Siena, whose canonisation process is temporarily blocked precisely to shed light on the Milanese episode.

Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi nasce dal ritrovamento di documentazione inedita riguardo ai processi – solo in parte noti – contro il maestro d’abaco Amedeo Landi che insegnava ai mercanti milanesi presso il Broletto. Si tratta di un caso eccezionale non solo perché finora si conosceva un solo testimone dell’attività del tribunale inquisitoriale milanese nel medioevo (la cui documentazione è andata interamente perduta), ma anche per il ruolo del tribunale ecclesiastico e dei suoi funzionari. La ricchezza delle informazioni e dei temi ha suggerito un lavoro d’équipe dei docenti del Dipartimento di studi storici per chiarire i molteplici aspetti (politici, religiosi, economici, documentari) di una vicenda che mostra la vitalità della Milano quattrocentesca, in cui il protagonista, il maestro Amedeo Landi, nel tentativo di tutelare i suoi studenti si scontra con il più importante predicatore del suo tempo, frate Bernardino da Siena, il cui processo di canonizzazione viene momentaneamente bloccato proprio per fare luce sull’episodio milanese.

    Description: 〈P〉The purpose of th is study is to describe certain features of Tsvetaeva's intermediate world and to demonstrate its relation to several peculiarities of Tsvetaeva's poetics, specifically, her predilection for oxymoron and the ambiguous nature and behavior of her lyrical personae. Furthermore, these important structural elements are viewed as inherent in Tsvetaeva's dichotomous poetic vision. Two thematic cores, "love" and "poetry", are analyzed with particular attention given to the investigation of the nature of their opposition. An analysis of the "love"/"poetry" pair specifically serves as a vehicle for obtaining information about the intermediate world. 〈/P〉

    Description: The PhD course in Mediaeval History of the University of Florence is one of the oldest in the Italian university circuit. Founded in 1983 by Girolamo Arnaldi, Elio Conti and Raoul Manselli, all the cycles of the courses were launched, achieving results of the greatest significance in the sphere of research. Over the years, about sixty young students and a couple of dozen teachers have given shape to a human and intellectual experience based on exchange and the acceptance of different points of view. Traced out in this book is a brief history of the first twenty years, rendering account of the activities fostered and the research carried out, and providing the scientific and bibliographic profiles of each member.

Fondato nel 1983 da Girolamo Arnaldi, Elio Conti e Raoul Manselli, ha attivato tutti i cicli dei corsi, conseguendo risultati di rilievo nell'attività di ricerca. Nel corso del tempo una sessantina di giovani studiosi e una ventina di docenti hanno dato corpo a un'esperienza umana e intellettuale basata sul confronto e sull'accettazione di punti di vista diversi. Ne è qui ripercorsa, in forma sintetica, la storia dei primi vent'anni, dando conto delle attività promosse e delle ricerche condotte, e raccogliendo i profili scientifici e la bibliografia di ciascun membro.

    Description: With this rich anthology of sources, most of which are made available here for the first time, Michele Mancino and Giovanni Romeo add another element to the research project that began with their recent book (Clero criminale. L’onore della Chiesa e i delitti degli ecclesiastici nell’Italia della Controriforma, Laterza, Roma-Bari, 2013, 4th ed.). The two parts document from a range of perspectives the way in which the Tridentine project of combating the common crimes of the clergy was undone before the end of the sixteenth century. Instead, the Roman curia was mainly concerned with enforcing the right of delinquent priests to be judged only by ecclesiastical tribunals, a strategy intended to defend the honor of the clergy that was followed persistently over the long term. The material presented here describes a previously unknown historical precedent for the recent revelations about the treatment of pedophile priests.

    Description: The book illustrates the reconstruction of the system of granting Neapolitan citizenship during the sixteenth century. In particular, the role played by the ‘Regia Camera della Sommaria’, the highest tax magistrature of the Kingdom of Naples, in the evaluation of requests and in the assignment of the citizenship licenses, which allowed access to the substantial tax and jurisdictional privileges of the capital city. The policy of the Spanish government with respect to these privileges is based on prudence and attention to the political and social balance of a fundamental and complex capital as Naples is. The ‘Sommaria’, however, manages in establishing a system of control and government of privileges, which makes the Neapolitan citizenship for a large part a product of the state; also subtracting expertise in the field to the city's municipal government.

Band des Münchener Nachdrucks des "SpravoÄ nyj i objasnitel'nyj slovar' Novomu Zavetu" berichtet worden. Wie Gil'tebrandt andeutet, unterscheidet sich der vorliegende "Slovar' Psaltiri" vom "Slovar' Novomu Zavetu" vor allem dadurch, daß bei jedem kirchenslavischen Wort vermerkt ist, ob sein griechisches Äquivalent im Psalter auch noch anders Übertragen worden ist, und dass ein griechisch-slavischer Index alle diese evtl. konkurrierenden Wiedergabemöglichkeiten übersichtlich zusammenfasst.〈/P〉

    Description: This book contains the proceedings of the first international conference organised by the Centro di Studi sulla civiltà comunale of the University of Florence, and offers a fine overview of the contribution made by international historiography to the history of the Italian Comunes. One of the most significant periods in the country's past is addressed here by some of the leading international specialists through the reconstruction of the approaches, issues and outcomes of the principal foreign historiographies (German, French, American, Spanish and English). The result is a fairly articulated picture of how the civilisation of the Comune has been treated and appraised over time outside Italy.     Description: In April 1479, the communities of the marquisate of Mantua pronounced for the first time a general oath of fealty to Federico Gonzaga, the third marquis, inaugurating a custom that was to be repeated with relative regularity in the following decades every time a Prince died. It was a practice which was fairly new for the Gonzago marquisate, at least in this capillary and general extension to the entire body of the State. The significance of an innovation of this kind deserves attention, as do the genesis and the partial forms that preceded this mature expression. This book comprises an edition of the entire related documentary corpus, complete with photographic reproductions of the individual documents, and preceded by a substantial introduction in which the event is described, placed in context and interpreted from various points of view.
    Description: Le comunità del marchesato di Mantova pronunciarono per la prima volta un generale giuramento di fedeltà a Federico Gonzaga terzo marchese nell'aprile 1479, inaugurando un uso che si sarebbe ripetuto con relativa continuità nei decenni successivi ad ogni morte del principe. Si tratta di una pratica relativamente nuova per il marchesato gonzaghesco, almeno in questa capillare e generale estensione all'intero corpo dello stato: il significato di una innovazione di questo genere merita attenzione, come anche la genesi e le forme parziali che hanno preceduto questa forma matura. In questo volume si dà l'edizione dell'intero corpus documentario relativo, integrata dalla riproduzione fotografica dei singoli documenti, e preceduta da una corposa introduzione che punta a inserire il case-study mantovano nel recente, articolato dibattito intorno alla costruzione e alla crescita di linguaggi politici diversificati nel tardo medioevo italiano.

He headed the Secretary of State and the Roman Curia from November 1914 to January 1930, during a crucial period in the history of Europe and of the Papacy. Diresse la Segreteria di Stato e la Curia romana dal novembre 1914 al gennaio 1930, cioè in un periodo cruciale della storia europea e del papato. Il volume – frutto dei seminari di studio sulla “Politica internazionale della Santa Sede” tenuti fra il 2013 e il 2016 e organizzati in collaborazione tra l’Università europea di Roma e l’Institut catholique de Paris – presenta i contributi di un gruppo internazionale di storici e archivisti, senior e dottorandi, incentrati su Gasparri nel suo ruolo di segretario di Stato, quale figura centrale del governo della Chiesa cattolica del Novecento.

    Description: 〈P〉n 1975 a group of Leningrad poets sought official permission to hold a memorial meeting commemorating the ninetieth anniversary of the birth of Nikolaj Stepanovič Gumilev (1886 -1921) the following year, as well as issuing a collection of their poetry. On April 16. 1976 the poet Oleg Oxapkin and the historian Vladimir Poreš initiated the first memorial meeting devoted to the founder of Acmeism. Since that time there have been three additional "unofficial conferences" held (1978, 1979 and 1980). At these yearly private meetings, literary historians, poets and poetry lovers converge and pay homage to Gumilev. The section containing material relating to Gumilev in this volume is significant and illuminating. 〈/P〉

    Description: This volume, which focuses on the relations between the two branches of the Habsburg dynasty in the modern era, examines the ways in which identity was constructed exploring the idea of a joint policy of the House of Austria in Europe. It also examines, through various case studies, the movement through the Habsburg possessions of individuals who belonged not only to the elite but to a variety of social and professional circles - artists, ecclesiastics, merchants and scholars. Ce volume consacré aux relations entre les deux branches de la dynastie de Habsbourg à l’époque moderne s’intéresse aux modalités d’une construction identitaire et soumet à l’analyse l’idée d’une politique conjointe de la Maison d’Autriche en Europe, avant d’aborder, à travers quelques études de cas, la circulation à travers les possessions des Habsbourg d’individus appartenant non pas aux seules élites mais à des milieux sociaux et professionnels variés – artistes, ecclésiastiques, marchands et savants.

    Description: This volume is devoted to one of the major aristocratic lineages of northern Italy in the later middle ages. The Rossi, whose political and social eminence dates back to the communal age, built in the Parmense a powerful lordship, based both on their estates and fortresses and on a vast patronage network spread over the territory and in the town: and the power of the family, though diminished after the crisis in the relations with the Sforza in 1482, was restored on partially different foundations during the Italian Wars. The essays collected in this book explore the complexity of the Rossi "little seignorial state", focusing on its internal constitution, on its exterior relations and on its artistic and cultural features between the mid-fourteenth and the early sixteenth century.

    Description: The organisation of the territory is the outcome of strategies of varying scope, in which a number of agents interact to shape out the areas of operation. The Liguria reality is probed here through four different situations - separated in chronological terms but sharing the poor visibility and limited efficacy of the fortified settlements. These focus on Genoa, both in the definition of its hinterland between the tenth and the eleventh centuries, and in establishing the bulwarks of coastal territorial expansion in the twelfth; the powerful groups of feudal lords who remoulded the rural settlement layout in the thirteenth century; finally, a village of the hinterland explored right through to the modern age.

    Description: The volume, which has emerged from an international conference of the same title, unites a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions on invasions of Goths and other Germanic tribes into the Roman Empire, focusing primarily on the third-century CE. The newly discovered fragments of the lost work Scythica by the third-century historian Dexippus of Athens, the so-called Scythica Vindobonensia alias Dexippus Vindobonensis, which survived in a Greek palimpsest kept in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, have great impact on the study of this field. The contributions explore the Vienna fragments in their historical and historiographical contexts, from the Roman to the Byzantine Era, and the history of the invasions themselves.

    Description: This book is a collection of articles by Italian and foreign scholars designed to offer an overview of the processes and issues involved in the history of the confraternity movement, as yielded by studies in the historical, social, legal, literary and artistic spheres in the course of the twentieth century. The articles deal with the historical context of western Europe, and more specifically with Italy, in the period comprised between the Middle Ages and the early Modern Age. The collection is divided into four sections: Individuals and groups, which explores the emergence of an interest in confraternity communities in disciplines addressing the history of social groups, of the rural world, of women and of young people. The legal and institutional framework deals with issues of legitimacy and institutional structure. The economics of charity analyses the relations between the confraternities and the hospital structures, the procedures for the administration of the assets, and the strategies of governance underlying the policies of aid of which the confraternities were the principal instrument. Finally, the section Theatrical, musical, artistic and documentary evidence is devoted to the sources that have handed down evidence of the operation of the confraternities.

    Description: This book is a collection of seven essays with an introduction by the editor. The contributions propose first-hand studies of some of the less researched aspects of the history of the Italian communes: the practices of conflict, vendetta and pacification. The variety of different ways of resolving conflicts brought to light by the studies for the various civic and rural contexts (Mantua, Parma, Pisa, Lucca, Florence and the Valdinievole), between the beginning of the thirteenth and the mid fourteenth century, indicate how normal such social relations were, the widespread nature of the feud and the legitimisation and centrality of the culture of the vendetta within the political arena of the commune. The book hence offers a precious contribution for a review of the prevalent narration of the vendetta in late mediaeval Italian society.

    Description: This book proposes a series of studies devoted to one of the most important areas of political and institutional history, that of the relations between the political dimension and the exercise of justice. Centred on the experience of Florence, but open to comparison with that of other parts of Italy, the investigation brings to light how, in the transformation of the political framework of the age of the Comune to that of the territorial State between the thirteenth and the fifteenth centuries, in the relations between the powers active in the territory the sphere of justice offered scope for debate and political competition as well as leverage for legitimisation. One of the intentions of the book is, in fact, to contribute to revising the concept of justice, going beyond the traditional vision of public function and an aspect of the progressive affirmation of the State.

    Description: The Italian cities of the last centuries of the Middle Ages continued to witness – alongside a progressive crystallisation of the social hierarchies – the economic and social ascent of individuals belonging to the 'middle class’. These were homines novi who, without resorting to dynastic connections and often rejecting the associative model of the guilds, managed to build fortunes and dignity through trade, enterprise, the exploitation of the land, the solidarity of district and parish and the management of welfare. Emblematic of such careers is the figure of an economic agent originating from the rural district, Donato Ferrario da Pantigliate, who in 1429 founded in Milan a devotional and welfare institute, the Scuola della Divinità. The book reconstructs the social, economic and spiritual conduct of Donato, placing it within the urban context of Milan in the first half of the fifteenth century.
    Description: Le città italiane degli ultimi secoli del Medioevo videro ancora, accanto a un progressivo irrigidirsi delle gerarchie sociali, l'ascesa economica e sociale di individui appartenenti al 'ceto medio': homines novi che, senza ricorrere a legami di casata e spesso rifiutando il modello associazionistico delle corporazioni, riuscirono a costruirsi fortuna e dignità grazie al commercio, all'imprenditoria, allo sfruttamento della terra, alle solidarietà di quartiere e di parrocchia, alla gestione dell'assistenza. Emblematica di questi percorsi di affermazione è la figura di un operatore economico originario del contado, Donato Ferrario da Pantigliate, fondatore nel 1429 a Milano di un ente devozionale e assistenziale, la Scuola della Divinità, personaggio del quale si vanno qui a ricostruire i comportamenti sociali, economici e spirituali inserendoli nel contesto urbano milanese della prima metà del Quattrocento.

    Description: Notwithstanding an impressive amount of secondary literature, an exhaustive study has been never devoted to the twelve letters written by Dante Alighieri after his banishment from Florence (1302–1315). This book answers to this important need of Dante Studies, offering an important tool for the increasing community of specialists interested in Dante’s works and posterity linked to the seventh centenary of his death (2021). A section is devoted to study in depth the theory and practice of the dictamen of the age in relationship with the concrete style of Dante’s texts. A preliminary overview is provided by Latin Philologists and Paleographers on the subject of the manuscript trasmission envisaging the problems dealing with the critical editions of the texts. Example of political communication realized by a layman, the papers gathered in this volume intend to offer a new reading and interpretation of these important letters, studying them in their socio-cultural context.

    Description: The book focuses on the particular historical-political context of the Kingdom of Naples in the Aragonese period (1442-1503), and explores the variety of languages related to political practice: juridical, literary, artistic, political languages are analyzed in their specificities, but also in their reciprocal osmotic relations. This volume offers a conclusive reflection after a conference organized in Naples, and integrates interdisciplinary perspectives. It tests and refines the hypothesis concerning the gradual development of a complex organism that – through literature, oratory, political treatises, artistic representations and administrative practices – goes in the direction of a “state system”, which still operates under the guidance of sovereignty.
