    Description: Learning devices can be embedded into organizational contexts. Through them learning processes can be intentionally activated as to transform employees while working. Workplaces have their own learning potential due to their high level of structuring and regulation. Their learning potential transform organizational actors while they are in the productive actions. Identifying embedded learning processes helps in intercepting learning valencies of workplace experiences and observing learning actions that can lead to transformative processes. Results of related research activities are presented in the volume. They have been carried out in more than ten years of research implemented in three types of organisations: business, museum, prison. Research experiences are analysed by using a model of study that is based on the reconstruction of the learning processes as they are experienced by the actors considered. Moreover the model is based on the analysis of learning actions that are embedded into the productive and service provision processes. Factors and conditions are analysed as well through which organisations can act on employees transformation.

    Description: The keynote of the recent history of the faculty of educational science of Florence University is change. This has emerged in response to the demands for education expressed by a new knowledge society, spawned by the processes of globalisation, and the social need to foster interculturalism and the dialogue between diversities. In this new dimension of change, education becomes the framework for preparation, but also for re-integrating and updating life itineraries that are swift and precarious, veined with insecurity and disillusionment. Even in the new approach, the scientific and cultural benchmark continues to be a consistent adherence to the secular, historic-pedagogic and educational tradition represented by the masters of the "Florence School". Since its creation in 1996, the new faculty has staked forcefully on the centrality of training in relation to the traditional focus on the professionalism of primary and secondary school teachers, and on the new extra-scholastic training issues: the educational professions; pedagogic care; the social education of adults; the technologies of education and instruction; the philosophic, sociological, psychological and anthropological dimension of education; the broad sphere of hardship and marginalisation and the different faces of diversity.

    Description: The volume starts from the monograph of the author entitled Per una pedagogia di “confine”, deepening a series of pedagogical relationships, from the epistemological level of the relationship of pedagogy with other disciplines, to the theoretical level of learning “over the course of life”, up to the methodological level the relationships researcher/educator, teacher/student, learner in an individual/cooperative situation. From this point of view, the author favours the anthropological-cultural contribution to the integration of educational interventions, making his own communicative and interactive methodologies for the qualification of learning and skills in training processes.     Description: In a complex, global, multicultural and post-modern society such as the contemporary one, the concepts of "democracy", citizenship "and" training” are undergoing a more urgent and necessary rethinking, which is tracing more and more constant new variations, contaminations and interconnections. On the one hand citizenship has become today active and participatory, as today it can be exercised. On the other hand, volunteering can be a response to the need for participation claimed by contemporary societies: the donation of blood, a particular declination of the traditional concept of gift, is seen as an opportunity to participate in community life and to exercise active and responsible citizenship. From this point of view, the subject is the main actor and protagonist of contemporary processes, and must be trained in understanding the complexity of the notion of citizenship.

    Description: In the period following the Second World War Giulio Preti was one of the leading exponents of Italian philosophy. A master of open critical thought, cultivated in the light of a rationalism that dialogued with, and integrated into his own philosophical model, many of the currents and stances of the global research scenario. Phenomenology, Marxism, pragmatism, neopositivism, transcendentalism and structuralism: in Preti all of these found an organic and original synthesis. Further, his particular brand of rationalist-critical thought touched on many aspects of philosophical knowledge: theoretical philosophy, the philosophy of science, that of language and that of art, from ethics to politics and even taking in the history of philosophy, offering authoritative contributions in every sphere. One hundred years after his birth, the University of Florence and the heir to the Faculty in which he lectured at length, the Faculty of Education, has decided to honour his memory with this anthology of studies, penned by former pupils and others and also by younger scholars, to once again focus the wealth of this thought and its, in many respects, current relevance. Even now, this particular brand of open, critical rationalism can offer a benchmark for addressing the new issues for philosophical reflection thrown up by modern society and culture.

    Description: The initiative to offer one Festschrift to Silvano M. Danieli for his seventieth birthday pays tribute to a man and a professional whose work has left a deep mark on human relations and on the world of libraries. Silvano, librarian at the Pontifical Theological Faculty "Marianum" and Prior of the Studio Marianum community in Rome since 2014, has indeed played a strategic role in the development of URBE, the association unifying the libraries of Rome’s pontifical universities in a single network of services. The qualified list of Italian and European participants to the work is proof of the breadth of appreciation he earned in his thirty years of activity as librarian and curator of the Bibliography of the Servite Order and of the Marian Bibliography. Aelredo of Rievaulx (1109-1167), one of the leading figures of the Anglo-Saxon Cistercian monasticism, expresses the meaning of this gift with the following words: «A man, by virtue of the friendship he has towards another man, becomes a friend of God, according to what the Lord says in the Gospel: I no longer call you servants, but friends»(De spirituali amicitia, II, 14).

    Description: This book recounts the phases in the set-up of the new Library of Social Sciences of the University of Florence. The move provided the opportunity for bringing together the collections that were scattered over seven service points and in about a dozen other sites closed to the public. At the same time, it provided the opportunity for reconsidering the services on offer, reorganising them on the basis of the characteristics of the new site. The first section tells how the library was conceived and planned, with the librarians' working groups preparing the move and projecting the changes to be made in the new site. The second part tackles the problems of organisation and management of the services in the new library.
    Description: Il volume racconta le tappe dell'allestimento della nuova Biblioteca di Scienze Sociali dell'Università di Firenze. Il trasloco è stata l'occasione per riaggregare collezioni che si trovavano sparse in sette punti di servizio e in una decina di altre sedi chiuse al pubblico. Allo stesso tempo è stata l'opportunità di ripensare i servizi offerti, riorganizzandoli sulla base delle caratteristiche della nuova sede. Nella prima parte si racconta come si è arrivati ad immaginare e progettare la biblioteca con i gruppi di lavoro dei bibliotecari che preparavano il trasloco proiettando i cambiamenti nella nuova sede. Nella seconda parte si affrontano i problemi di organizzazione e gestione dei servizi nella nuova biblioteca.

    Description: A rich cultural insight of Rome in the second half of the 18th century emerges from the edition of an autograph memoir on the journey from Florence to Southern Italy made by the librarian Angelo Maria Bandini (1780-1781). Lounges, coffees and chocolates, religious rites, curial relations and the reforming action by Pope Pious VI are the backdrop to the meticulous description of Rome as a 'diffused museum'. Bandini, librarian and scholar of the enlightenment century, visits and observes palaces, art galleries, cabinets and churches, paying particular attention to libraries, whose metaphorical sieve gives birth to remarkable pieces and precious curiosities.

Investing in capacity building is one of the strategic keys to face the challenges of a sustainable future, as stated in the 2030 Agenda, aiming to transform, through a long-term vision, the paradigm of dominant development. Within this framework, the volume aims to offer operational elements to address the issue of Capacity building and define the territory as a space of conflicts, governability, agreement and participation undergoing constant change. Thus, participatory territorial planning -a mere technical instrument in itself- becomes a space for awareness, appropriation and leadership of the population.     Description: In 2012, the bindings of the books of the ancient fund of the Library of social sciences showed the first signs of deterioration, due to the heavy changes in temperature and humidity of the conservation environment. While the University worked at implementing a new air conditioning system, the Tuscany Region and the officials of the National Central Library of Florence developed a project for the safety of the entire fund, to slow down the process of deterioration and prevent or stabilize the damage already present. The innovative method implemented in the Library was illustrated in a seminar held on November 24, 2016 at the Polo di Scienze Sociali of the University of Florence and this volume collects the speeches of the participants.

    Description: This study represents the continuation and in part the completion of a research study within an Islamic educational and philanthropic institution, currently located in Greek territory. Through repeated inspections and a long work of comparison, not only have the volumes kept at the institution of Kavála been catalogued, but the composition of the entire library has also been almost entirely reconstructed, identifying additional funds belonging to it.     Description: The story evokes an imaginary dialogue between a student and the master, after his death. The master is Luigi Crocetti, a well-known and unforgettable figure in the world of libraries. He was a librarian at the National Central Library of Florence, scholar and teacher of librarianship, president of the Italian Library Association in the 1980s. The master's death arouses in the student the desire to carry on a conversation with him about libraries and in particular about subject cataloguing. In these talks, the proposed themes are accompanied by feelings, memories, descriptions of landscapes, simple and naive reflections about life questions. Both of them intend to dispose the story’s protagonist and the reader to listen to the master’s lesson again. Although in narrative form, this text reviews some key passages of the Crocetti’s writings and also intends to contribute to the reconstruction of his intellectual biography. Some essays by the author about his thought and work are reproduced in the appendix.

    Description: This volume reconstructs the events of the private library of the Marquis Subdean Gabriello Riccardi (1705-1798), which at the end of its development will be joined and merged with that of the Family, today known as the Riccardiana Library. The research focuses in particular on the Manuscripts Fund, which was definitely the most relevant and precious part. The final result of the present study has produced both a topographical catalogue, which reconstructs the physical layout that these manuscripts had in their original location, and an alphabetical catalogue, according to the 18th Century original. Finally, the historical essay highlights the events that led this famous library, now unified by Gabriello's will, to save itself from dispersion and remain intact as we know it today. The publication is enriched by a Repertorial Section, available with open access in the digital version of the volume (eBook), which presents a series of documents, catalogues and indexes obtained from the study on the Library of Gabriello Riccardi.

    Description: The Royal Institute of Signore Montalve alla Quiete was born between 1885 and 1886, by the union of the two congregations founded by the venerable Eleonora Ramirez de Montalvo: the Montalve di Ripoli and the Montalve alla Quiete. From them inherits the principles and the educational action carried out for over two centuries, bringing them to the threshold of the new millennium. In this analytical inventory are described the papers produced by the new Institute. The core relating to female education is only one of the subjects that this archive can offer: architectural and social transformations, the two world wars, customs and traditions of population are just some examples of the researchs offered and the Tuscan historical frame that the cards draw in a well-defined way.

    Description: The purpose of this book is to highlight the relevance of the international Open Access (OA) movement, which aims at supporting and promoting strategies for the dissemination of scientific research products with the support of network technologies and open access policies. The OA Institutional Repositories (IRs) will be presented within the framework of: some guidelines, research evaluation mechanisms, intellectual property issues, long-term storage, Data and Process Management Plan and Trusted Digital Repositories. The work will also present a survey on a sample of 23 (Italian and international) digital repositories in support of communication and of open access to online research content. On the basis of this investigation, a ToolKit will be presented which could be useful for programming and monitoring several different features of an IR. Subsequently, the reader will be presented with a metadata scheme for the description of the scientific research products in IRs, which takes into consideration the Guidelines for the creation and management of metadata in Institutional Repositories (CRUI, 2012) and the Linked Open Data-enabled Bibliographical Data Recommendations (Subirats, Zeng, 2015). Metadata enabled as limit of detection (LOD) data will play a key role in qualifying the semantic profile of the properties of the considered metadata and, consequently, of the information resources they represent. They will also contribute to the enhancement of semantic interoperability and to the online promotion of collaborative dynamics of scientific research content on an Italian and international level, strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of research itself.

    Description: Carlo Battisti (Trento 1882-Empoli 1977) was one of the major linguists in Italy and took part to the history of cinema starring in Vittorio De Sica’s Umberto D.. His long and intense activity has been largely divided between linguistics and library science since the very beginning of his studies at the University of Vienna. In Florence, Battisti held lectures of Comparative History of the Romance Languages and of Library science and Bibliography at the School for Librarians and Palaeographer-Archivists, of which he was also director. The eight studies published here offer biographical and intellectual insights on him, and bring a series of unpublished documents to light. The volume is completed by an iconographic appendix.

    Description: Despite having been written at different times and being characterised by a great variety of subject and a multiplicity of approach, the essays of Gabriele Mazzitelli gathered here all appear to have been triggered by a precise and organic project of exploration. In fact what pervades them all is his love of the book, seen on the one hand as an unrepeatable and magnificent object produced by individual genius and the cultural legacy, and on the other as a medium of knowledge, an intellectual and spiritual bond. The book beloved of Mazzitelli is that of the rich and variegated Slav cultural tradition. It is the Russian book first and foremost, but not only, and not in the abstract dimension of the erudite bibliographic citation, but in the lively, shifting and at times perishable dimension of the library, seen as a living site of encounter and study.     Description: The enforcement of the sentence in a (re)educational perspective is a highly debated topic in different approaches, including the multidisciplinary ones.     Description: Elegant, lofty, charming, brilliant, bellicose, refined, capricious, superb, temerarious, vain. Giulio Einaudi is an oxymoron. From the extensive literature that has furthered our understanding of his figure, he emerges as the synthesis of divergent behaviours and contrasting inclinations. This oxymoron translates in the features of his publishing house, which integrates diachronicity and current affairs, tradition and newness, scientificity and militancy. The book deepens our knowledge of one of the most neglected aspects of Giulio Einaudi’s outstanding service towards Italian culture: namely his promotion of public libraries in the 1960s in Italy. Our starting point is the establishment of Dogliani’s civic library, dedicated to his father the President Luigi Einaudi. Setting out from this event – which we have retraced with a particular eye towards oral history – the book proposes to rethink the relationship between Einaudi’s view on library project and his cultural programme, which he expressed in the same years through an intense political campaign for the promotion of public access to reading.

    Description: The birth and development of disciplines, as organized knowledge that guides the interpretation of reality, are inscribed in the heritage of the knowledge of our species. These follow the triple regulating principles of the historical flux of the meanings of feeling and thinking: cognitive potential, mental processing, intangible and tangible products. The flow from the indistinct feeling of the origins evolves through the archaic forms of the magic thought; to the ancient forms of declarative thought up to the modern forms of demonstrative thought. The latter with the separation between disciplines does not recognize the interconnection inherent in reality, loses the scientific revolution character and generates the unsustainable human development on the planet. From the global interconnection experience of the contemporary world, a new paradigm comes to life: transdisciplinarity, whose epistemology recomposes the knowledge and reality’s unity and diversity beyond the barriers between disciplines.

    Description: Eleonora Ramirez de Montalvo is one of the most important historical figures of woman’s assistance and education during the seventeenth century. She is the founder of two lay congregations: the Minime Ancille of the Divine Incarnation (1647) and the Minime Ancille of the Holy Trinity (1650). This volume lists and describes in an analytical way the papers produced and preserved by the second of these, also known Montalve alla Quiete, which for over two centuries carried out an intense activity and exerted a considerable influence in Tuscany. The study of this archive provides a unique range of information both on the economic and political events, and on the relationships maintained by the Montalve with society growing its prestige and heritage.     Description: This volume shows the outcome of a series of meetings and seminars which, on several levels, contributed to the construction of the International Conference La ricerca sull’Educazione in età Adulta nelle università italiane held at the University of Florence on the 23rd and 24th November 2017. The different contributions have tried to answer the question on the origin and development of adult education in Italy within academic contexts. What does it mean to work in this research field? The interviewed directors have reflected on a number of research approaches and have reconstructed the variety of theories, models and authors which outlined the development of this discipline in Italy over the last fifty years.     Description: Media Education (ME) has come a long way. Today, it can no longer be considered a field of study reserved for semiotic and communication researchers. Nor can it be regarded as a privileged practice of those teachers, who for some reason consider media of fundamental importance. On one hand, ME is now part of the agenda of international organizations, which consider the development of media competences a necessary requisite to fully exercise citizenship in the current contemporary society. On the other, ME practices are becoming increasingly widespread in schools involving a growing number of teachers. Notwithstanding, teaching the media still seems to be a rather solipsistic task where «everything is fine». Indeed, in ME there is a tremendous lack of research concerning the educational practices' quality and effectiveness. This book tries to cope with these issues by providing a set of instruments to design, develop and evaluate ME activities in schools, and supporting the enhancement of media educators' knowledge and skills.

    Description: The so-called 'digital revolution' and the economic and social transformations of the last decades have also involved university education, requiring not only some aspects of traditional lectures to adapt, but also several on-line teaching projects to be launched. A recent aspect of this process, started by North American university institutions such as Stanford, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is represented by the worldwide offer of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which have no limit concerning the number of participants. and do not require a binding and expensive registration. Using international literature on the subject, this study analyses the origins and evolution of this new system of university teaching.

    Description: Seven European Regional Governments, together with Earlall and universities and research centres, have undertaken to refine a first draft of a Joint Progress Report of Regions on Implementation of European Lifelong Learning Strategies in the perspective of the Europe 2020 Strategy. The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate the usefulness and need to make an instrument available to European Regional Governments that helps to understand and evaluate the educational conditions of the regional population when compared with other regions. The Report shows how, over the decade, all the Regional Governments have undertaken to adapt training systems to the demographic dynamics characterised by the general ageing of the population and by migratory phenomena. Simultaneously the Report also shows the need for urgent improvements in some fields where the impact of policies is still too modest and where the risk of stagnation must be dealt with (for example, lifelong learning policies and NEET reduction).

    Description: In the activity of the librarian, the technical dimension, essential for working with professionalism, cannot ignore or be separated from commitment, attention to civil rights and the way in which they are lived and practiced within the community to which they belong. Ensuring access to information cannot be limited to 'our' library: it must be a responsibility that concerns the territory where we live and operate, looking to our colleagues who may find themselves in a difficult situation and especially to the people who have difficulties in exercising their rights. The hope is that the transmission of registered knowledge will contribute more and more to the freedom, rights and well-being of all. Will it still take time to understand that investing in libraries means investing in democracy, economic development and the quality of life? As always, the reference framework for understanding and interpreting library problems is that of the comparison with international library traditions, starting from the European continent, as the profession of the librarian today has a theoretical framework and an operational dimension of global reach.

    Description: The fundamental principles of freedom, security, democracy, and the regulatory mechanisms of the European Union, as well as the pronouncements of the European Convention for the protection of Human Rights and fundamental freedoms (ECHR) can be subject to dangerous violations within criminal justice systems. When these violations are perpetrated by the actors called to protect the same rights and freedoms, the institutions must also prepare the educational devices which are required for their prevention. This volume intends to investigate the complexity of educational actions - primarily informal ones - which accompany the creation of the operators’ knowledge of the analysed systems, as well as the methods of their growth.     Description: The idea behind this book – devoted to the relations between adults and children – emerged within a specific educational experience launched in an experimental manner in 2006 by the faculty of educational science of Florence University and now in its fourth edition. These are teaching courses held in the evening and on Saturdays to make it easier for students with daytime jobs to attend the lessons. The quest for new forms of organisation was accompanied by a meditation on teaching, which brought out several very interesting educational themes which were effectively transversal to the various disciplines. This book presents the results of this methodological approach, aimed at fostering a conscious, reflective and personal learning. As the title suggests, the essays are designed to focus the question of the educational relationship within a multidisciplinary perspective. Us-them, to remind ourselves that adults have a fundamental and inescapable responsibility. The relationship is typically asymmetrical, with special features and decidedly variable over time. It has in fact been marked for centuries by a failure to recognise the needs of the youngsters and their own subjectivity, to the point of arriving at disturbing levels of violence and coercion. Such cases have been justly referred to a 'black pedagogy', which sadly is far from being everywhere a thing of the past, and even in Italy has left deep and persistent traces. For these reasons the study of the educational relationship has numerous relevant aspects of interest, all extremely topical, and represents a fundamental argument that adults must consciously address. Educators and teachers, parents and students, can all thus enhance their sensitivity and competence with a view to consolidating the reflective practices that are now considered absolutely indispensable for those who live in contact with children and adolescents.

    Description: Since the mid 20th century, the criticism of mass culture has been marked by the "apocalyptic" positions of many authors. Through the texts and ideas of three these "apocalyptic" authors (or, at least, of three authors defined as such: Adorno, Pasolini and Baudrillard), but also through the most current criticisms of ICT, the text suggests to re-read the apocalyptic authors. At the same time, it highlights the limits of information and communication technologies and their partial outdatedness, while also trying to draw inspiration from them in order to develop a model of media education which may keep alive the dialectical charge between the possibilities offered by technology and the pitfalls it sometimes hides. The apocalyptic authors, in fact, can support the need for a semiological, critical-sociological and pedagogical work, which considers the media as a problem, and creates and gives the subjects the analysis, interpretation and (critical) use skills of the media themselves. The aim is to create a form of literacy with respect to old and new "languages of knowledge", but above all with respect to the formation of critical and thoughtful, free and creative "well-made heads".

    Description: This book proposes an interpretation of continuing education as an enabling factor of social innovation. Continuing education is an opportunity for transforming and co-creating structural and socio-cultural conditions in work contexts, through inclusive and collaborative practices and processes. The reflection presented in the book starts from an eco-systemic analysis of educational processes entailed in the social innovation dynamics, and develops a definition of educational action for formulating and testing responses to complex social needs. The educative action, oriented to creatively combine tangible and intangible resources, individual talents, collective imagination, improves capacity to rethink educational and socio-educational services and face the challenges that reality presents.

    Description: In Europe the social economy employs almost 15 million workers. During the crisis years, unlike other sectors, it has often generated an increase in jobs. The aim of this comparative study is to investigate how to allow the supply and demand for young people to meet in the different types of social economy bodies. In particular, it concentrates on the problem of how to bring into line initial university training and the skills required by these organizations. The focus is placed on the varied family of training workers present in at least 75% of the organizations, whose professionalism is nevertheless rarely acknowledged. The papers proposed in this book try to identify the most suitable solutions at the level of curriculum, career development and accompanying measures, while drawing solutions from objective findings and not from training system needs or convictions.
