    Description: This work arises from the presentations held during the research seminar of the Italian Society for the Study of Contemporary History (SISSCO) titled Ruling classes and spaces in the contemporary period. Asymmetries between centres and peripheries, continuities and discontinuities. The Italian case (1861-2015), organized between the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017 and coordinated by the Centro di ricerca “Guido Dorso” per lo studio del pensiero meridionalistico. The volume is conceived as a test for the vitality of a field of study of historiography on contemporary Italy: that on the various sectors of the country’s elite from Risorgimento to present days. This effort has been made through direct discussion between scholars, paying particular attention to the territorial diversities and the political and institutional changes. The work offers a rich and multifaceted collection of essays, focusing on different geographical areas and segments of the Italian ruling classes, based on different methodological approaches and various sources.

Il caso italiano (1861-2015), organizzato tra fine 2016 e inizio 2017, con il coordinamento del Centro di ricerca “Guido Dorso” per lo studio del pensiero meridionalistico di Avellino. Il volume è stato concepito come un’opportunità per saggiare la vitalità di un settore specifico della storiografia relativa all’Italia contemporanea: quello degli studi dei vari segmenti della classe dirigente del nostro Paese dal Risorgimento ai nostri giorni, attraverso un confronto diretto tra ricercatori, con un’attenzione alle peculiarità territoriali e alle fratture politico-istituzionali vissute nel corso della vicenda unitaria. Il lavoro offre al lettore un quadro ricco e variegato di ricerche sia per i differenti focus su territori e settori delle classi dirigenti italiane, sia per i differenti approcci proposti e le tipologie di fonti utilizzate dagli autori.

    Description: At various junctures in the contemporary age, the relationship between Russia and the West has occupied a crucial place in the debates of Russian intellectual and political elites about the peculiar path and historical destiny of their country, constituting at the same time an important factor in Europe’s cultural self-definition, geohistorical contours, security system. The outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war has invested a question that had already become “classic” with a renewed, urgent topicality. The essays collected in the volume range over the time span from the final decades of the Tsarist Empire to the present day, focusing on topics such as Nikolai Danilevsky’s influential reflection on Rossiia i Evropa (A. Venturi), Max Weber’s analysis of Russian constitutionalism in 1905-07 (F. Fera), the pro-Westerner elements in Russian nationalism at the beginning of the twentieth century (G. Savino), the contribution of Russian emigration to the conceptualization of the West/East cleavage in the interwar period (R. Gravina), the Soviet Union in the vision of A.J. Toynbee (T. Tagliaferri), the “Ukrainian question” between the 20th and 21st centuries (R. Valle), the competition over the post-Soviet space between the Russian Federation and the European Union (M. Puleri). In the introduction, G.     Description: During the 17th century antiquities of Campania received international attention thanks to the cultural politics of the Bourbon monarchy. The archaeological discoveries were considered part of the political and military success of the King of Naples. After the reunification of Italy, Naples lost its central role as heart of the antiquities collecting and trade as consequence of the marginalization of Naples as economic and political capital of a Kingdom. This process influenced the sectors archaeology, collecting and antiquity market that traditionally reflected the self-representation of the cultural and political élite. This book focuses on the social history of Neapolitan archaeology, that between the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century was strictly connected with the antiquarian market. The research analyses cultural, socio-political and institutional transformations that determinated the promulgation of a specific legislation that limited the exportation of antiquities with the aim to protect the national interest on Cultural Heritage.

    Il Bilancio di Genere dell’Ateneo federiciano: dal rapporto di genere all’istituzionalizzazione del processo (2023)

    Description: [English]:Universities, as training and research institutions, are required to implement actions and policies aimed at ensuring gender equality and at removing obstacles that prevent the full personal and professional fulfilment of men and women. To this end, the Gender Responsive Budgeting is the fundamental tool to pursue the objectives of equality. But more than a document, it is an articulated process that requires a significant involvement of the governance of the University, through a path of institutionalization of the approach to the gender issues. The volume presents the results of the second gender report of the University Federico II of Naples, drawn up according to the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities Guidelines. In addition to the context analysis, which allows to highlight strengths and critical issues of the University with respect to gender equality, the document illustrates the level of integration of the gender perspective in the University's strategic documents, the network of bodies responsible for gender issues and the repertoire of actions implemented in the previous five years. The gender analysis of economic and financial commitments, carried out through the reclassification of the budget, has also made it possible to explore in detail the resources expressly allocated to the equality objectives, identifying the areas in which greatest investments are needed. The document also includes a preliminary gender analysis of student opinion questionnaires, which can be used as a useful tool to provide insights into the definition of positive actions for the student population. The picture that emerges from the proposed analysis is of a University that has embarked on a serious path of institutionalization of the gender budget process, attested by the commitment to promote inclusive cultural and organizational processes aimed at concretely pursuing equality objectives in training, research and work.

    Description: [Italiano]:Le Università, in quanto enti di formazione e di ricerca, sono tenute a mettere in atto azioni e politiche volte a garantire la parità di genere e a rimuovere gli ostacoli che impediscono la piena realizzazione personale e professionale di uomini e donne. A tale scopo il Bilancio di Genere è lo strumento d’elezione per perseguire gli obiettivi di parità. Ma più che di un documento, si tratta di un vero e proprio articolato processo che richiede un significativo coinvolgimento della governance di Ateneo, attraverso un percorso di istituzionalizzazione dell’approccio alle questioni di genere. Il volume presenta gli esiti del secondo bilancio di genere della Federico II di Napoli, redatto secondo le Linee Guida elaborate dalla Conferenza dei Rettori delle Università Italiane. Oltre all’analisi di contesto, che consente di evidenziare i punti di forza e gli elementi di criticità dell’Ateneo federiciano rispetto alla parità di genere, il documento illustra il livello di integrazione della prospettiva di genere nei documenti strategici di Ateneo, la rete di organismi preposti alle tematiche di genere e il repertorio delle azioni messe in atto nel quinquennio precedente. L’analisi di genere degli impegni economico-finanziari, realizzata a partire dalla riclassificazione del bilancio, ha consentito inoltre di esplorare nel dettaglio le risorse espressamente destinate agli obiettivi di parità, identificando gli ambiti in cui è necessario investire maggiormente. Il documento include inoltre una prima analisi in ottica di genere dei questionari di rilevazione delle opinioni degli studenti e delle studentesse, che può essere adoperata come utile strumento per fornire spunti per la definizione di azioni positive destinate alla popolazione studentesca. Il quadro che emerge dall’analisi proposta è quello di un Ateneo che ha intrapreso un serio percorso di istituzionalizzazione dell’intero ciclo del Bilancio di Genere, attestato dall’impegno nella promozione di processi culturali ed organizzativi inclusivi volti a perseguire concretamente gli obiettivi di uguaglianza e di parità nella formazione, nella ricerca e nel lavoro.

    Description: The volume deals with the theme of the feudal question, crucial for the history of the Mezzogiorno, in a long eighteenth century, from the Austrian period to the beginning of nineteenth century. Historiographic debate, legal treaties, philosophical and economic writings, administrative documents, rules and disputes: around feudalism and the role of the feud in the processes of ennobling and social mobility there is a whole interweaving of government interventions, reflections, protests, sometimes rebellions. The feudal question is confirmed as a problematic node of reform policies, of civil and economic development projects of Sicilies in the context of European transformations, and of the historiographic tradition on and of the South. Not only that but, far from a mere polemical invention of the Enlightenment writers, it re-emerges as a constitutive dimension of the social, political and legal organization, although certainly far from representing southern history as a whole. Attempts at reform and resistance unfold throughout the century, from Charles of Bourbon and his minister Bernardo Tanucci up to the anti-feudal law of 1799 and the subversive laws of Giuseppe Bonaparte and Gioacchino Murat.

    Description: Il volume affronta il tema della questione feudale, cruciale per la storia del Mezzogiorno, in un lungo Settecento, dal viceregno austriaco all’Ottocento preunitario. Dibattito storiografico, trattati giuridici, scritti filosofici ed economici, documenti amministrativi, norme e contestazioni: intorno alla feudalità e al ruolo del feudo nei processi di nobilitazione e di mobilità sociale è tutto un intreccio di interventi governativi, riflessioni, proteste, talora ribellioni. La questione feudale si conferma come nodo problematico delle politiche e dei dibattiti riformatori, dei progetti di sviluppo civile e economico delle Sicilie nel quadro delle trasformazioni e dei condizionamenti europei, e della stessa tradizione storiografica sul e del Mezzogiorno. Non solo ma, tutt’altro che mera invenzione polemica degli scrittori illuministi, riemerge come dimensione costitutiva dell’organizzazione sociale, politica e giuridica, anche se lontana, certo, dal rappresentare nel suo insieme la storia meridionale. Tentativi di riforma e resistenze si snodano lungo l’arco del secolo, da Carlo di Borbone e dal suo ministro Bernardo Tanucci via via fino alla legge antifeudale del 1799 e alle leggi eversive di Giuseppe Bonaparte e Gioacchino Murat.

    Una esperienza di rinnovamento monastico nel Regno di Sicilia dei secoli XII-XV (2022)

    Description: The historiography of recent decades, based on the edition of numerous sources, has revised the issue of the spread of monastic reform in Southern Italy. In the face of the marginal influence of more widely established movements in Europe, there is instead the emergence of a plurality of experiences in search of an indigenous model of a hermitic and pastoral style. Among these, in its own right, should be inscribed the congregation of St. Mary of Gualdo. Through the analysis of a heterogeneous complex of surviving sources this work aims to reconstruct the genesis of the founding charism and the history of the religious family. Starting from the various hagiographic proposals produced for the founder, John of Tufara, the dynamics related to the institutionalization process will be probed. The support of the Apostolic See will facilitate, meanwhile, the balancing of relations with local bishops for religious organization and expansion, while monarchical authorities and local aristocracies will contribute to economic and patrimonial stabilization, up to the attempt to rise to monastic lordship. The proposed religious model, in addition to responding to the demands of ideals proper to the second revival of hermitism, is structured in a sensitive involvement in pastoral action, even contributing to the disappearance of the phenomenon of private churches. The yearning on the part of the laity to participate in the model of monastic life will find expression in the legal form of self-oblation, memorial practice, burial at the monastery, as well as in the activity of hospices linked to the monastic network and scattered along the pilgrimage routes to the shrine of the Archangel.Due to a series of concauses related to natural phenomena (plagues, earthquakes), internal crises of a religious nature, and finally the radical change in the economic system of the Aragonese age, the congregation will not succeed in remodeling its organization, thus heading toward the complete dissolution that will occur at the beginning of modernity.

    Description: La storiografia degli ultimi decenni, sulla base dell’edizione di numerose fonti, ha provveduto a revisionare il tema della diffusione della riforma monastica nell’Italia Meridionale. A fronte del marginale influsso di movimenti più largamente affermatisi in Europa, si registra invece la nascita di una pluralità di esperienze alla ricerca di un modello autoctono di stampo eremitico e pastorale. Fra queste, a pieno titolo, va inscritta anche la congregazione di S. Maria del Gualdo. Attraverso l’analisi di un eterogeneo complesso di fonti superstiti questo lavoro si prefigge di ricostruire la genesi del carisma fondazionale e la storia della famiglia religiosa. Muovendo dalle diverse proposte agiografiche prodotte per il fondatore, Giovanni da Tufara, verranno sondate le dinamiche relative al processo di istituzionalizzazione. L’appoggio della Sede Apostolica faciliterà, intanto, l’equilibrio dei rapporti con i vescovi locali per l’organizzazione e l’espansione religiosa, mentre le autorità monarchiche e le aristocrazie locali contribuiranno alla stabilizzazione economica e patrimoniale, fino al tentativo di assurgere a signoria monastica. Il modello religioso proposto, oltre a rispondere alle esigenze di ideali propri della seconda rinascita dell’eremitismo, si struttura in un sensibile coinvolgimento nell’azione pastorale, contribuendo persino alla scomparsa del fenomeno delle chiese private. L’anelito da parte dei laici di partecipare al modello di vita monastica troverà espressione nella forma giuridica della oblazione di sé, nella prassi commemorativa, nella sepoltura presso il monastero, nonché nell’attività di ospizi legati alla rete monastica e disseminati lungo le vie di pellegrinaggio al santuario dell’Arcangelo. Per una serie di concause legate a fenomeni naturali (pestilenze, terremoti), a crisi interne di carattere religioso e infine al radicale mutamento del sistema economico di età aragonese la congregazione non riuscirà a rimodulare la propria organizzazione, avviandosi così verso il completo dissolvimento che sopraggiungerà all’inizio della modernità.

    I rapporti fra città e campagna allo specchio della normativa statutaria (2023)

    Description: During late Middle Ages the space corresponding to Papal State showed some features similar to those of Central-Northern Italy, sharing others with the Southern Kingdom. This interesting mix can be tested observing statutory law, that, regarding this period, has abundantly survived, although revealing remarkable regional differences. The interplay between cities and villages in this situation is complicated by Papal power, which participates in that relationship, affecting it with a varying intensity and continuity. In this book we try to specify the “three parts game” that happened during the legislative process, considering also other players action, such rural lords. The work includes four essays about the four lands forming the Papal State and other three about nearer lands, i.e. Florentine Tuscany, Siennese one and the Sicilian Kingdom (reserving a special attention at Abruzzo), and suggests useful comparisons, one of the project paramount aims. The scholars invited to join the enterprise, each specialist of a single land, during their research considered other’s results, notwithstanding the physical distance among each other. Thus, we try to offer a homogeneous picture, at least regarding powers interplay dynamics.

    Description: Lo spazio territoriale dello Stato della Chiesa nel tardo Medio Evo mostra alcune caratteristiche proprie dell’Italia centro-settentrionale, ma al contempo se ne distingue per altre che lo avvicinano al Regno meridionale. Questa interessante miscela può essere verificata nella normativa statutaria, che si è conservata abbondante per il periodo, anche se con alcune notevoli differenze regionali. L’interazione fra i centri urbani e quelli rurali trova qui una complicazione nella presenza del potere pontificio, che si inserisce nel rapporto fra i due soggetti condizionandolo, anche se con differente intensità e continuità. In questo volume si cerca di dettagliare il “gioco a tre” che l’attività normativa delle campagne comportava, senza dimenticare la possibile presenza di altri attori, come i signori rurali. Dedicando quattro studi alle quattro realtà regionali comprese nello Stato della Chiesa e altri tre a realtà finitime, cioè la Toscana fiorentina, quella senese e il Regno di Sicilia (con un’attenzione particolare all’Abruzzo), il libro suggerisce proficui confronti, che sono stati comunque una delle idee portanti del progetto. I singoli studiosi che sono stati invitati a partecipare all’iniziativa, ognuno specialista di una specifica area, pur non lavorando in stretto contatto, hanno comunque tenuto presenti i risultati delle ricerche condotte dagli altri, in modo da fornire un quadro il più possibile omogeneo, almeno per quanto riguarda le dinamiche dell’interazione fra i tre poteri.

    Description: History Teaching in the university context is a completely unexplored field of research in Italy and for a large part also in those countries that can boast more solid traditions of studies in this research area. This is caused by the shared idea that the academic context is always a guarantee of a high quality of teaching. This work reverses this thesis and therefore aims to deeply investigate the teaching and learning of History to understand its effectiveness; in other words, this means understand whether and how the university can lead students to the development of Historical Thinking, i.e. the most important of the educational objectives concerning History. Through the comparison between Italy and Spain (one of the most advanced country in this research area), the use of a large variety of sources (including specific surveys) and a wide recognition of the Didactics of History as a discipline (with reference to its most important debate on Historical Thinking), the result is a first attempt to identify and analyze the original characteristics and critical issues of History in the higher education system which focuses on the most relevant disciplinary traditions, practices and teaching tools, and also on the complex relationship of academic History with school, publishing industry and digital.

    Description: La didattica universitaria della Storia è un terreno di ricerca del tutto inesplorato in Italia, e per larga parte anche in quei Paesi che possono vantare tradizioni di studi ben più solide in questo settore, e ciò perché è comunemente accettata l'idea secondo cui l'ambito accademico sia sempre garanzia di un'alta qualità dell'insegnamento impartito. Rovesciando tale tesi, questo contributo si propone di indagare a fondo sull'insegnamento e l'apprendimento della Storia all'università allo scopo di comprenderne l'efficacia, ossia di verificare se effettivamente, e in che termini, quest'ultima sia in grado di condurre i discenti al raggiungimento del più importante degli obiettivi didattici concernenti la Storia, lo sviluppo del ragionamento storico. Avvalendosi della comparazione tra Italia e Spagna (uno dei contesti nazionali più all'avanguardia in questo ambito), dell'impiego di una grande molteplicità di fonti (tra cui figurano specifici questionari) e di un'ampia ricognizione della Didattica della Storia come disciplina e del suo dibattito di riferimento concernente le teorie della conoscenza storica, il risultato è un primo tentativo di individuazione e di analisi dei caratteri originali e delle criticità della Storia nel sistema d'istruzione superiore che focalizza l'attenzione sulle tradizioni disciplinari, le pratiche e gli strumenti didattici più rilevanti, senza però dimenticare il complesso rapporto della Storia accademica con la scuola, l'editoria e il digitale.

    Description: The book collects the results of the Laboratory of Final Synthesis of the Master Degree course in Architectural Design MAPA at DiARC Department of Architecture, structured around the co-participation of two disciplines, architectural design, taught in the course by Professor Renato Capozzi, and executive design, by Professor Erminia Attaianese. The Laboratory has taken on a call for competition articulated in two phases with the subject of the design of a building with a strong public vocation, with the aim of subjecting the students to a design experimentation based on the simulation of a real participation in a design competition. The roofed market of San Giovanni di Dio in the Monteverde district in Rome, has been the theme of the year for the students, producing ten answers, in which the students have respected both the qualitative and quantitative indications and the number of elaborated required, keeping together the complexity of the architectural project and its executive and constructive aspects.     Description: Il volume raccoglie gli esiti del Laboratorio di Sintesi Finale del corso di Laurea Magistrale in Progettazione Architettonica MAPA presso il DiARC Dipartimento di Architettura, strutturato attorno alla compartecipazione di due discipline, la composizione architettonica e urbana, affrontata nel corso tenuto dal professore Renato Capozzi, e la progettazione esecutiva, affidata alla professoressa Erminia Attaianese. Il Laboratorio ha assunto un bando di concorso articolato in due fasi con oggetto la progettazione di un edificio a forte vocazione pubblica, con l’obiettivo di sottoporre agli allievi una sperimentazione progettuale basata sulla simulazione di una reale partecipazione ad un bando di concorso. Il mercato coperto a San Giovanni di Dio nel quartiere Monteverde a Roma, ha costituito il tema d’anno per gli studenti, producendo dieci risposte, in cui sono state rispettate sia le indicazioni qualitative e quantitative che il numero di elaborati richiesti, tenendo assieme la complessità del progetto di architettura e i suoi aspetti esecutivi e costruttivi.     Description: Pinkizzazione è la recente tendenza a colorare di rosa tutto ciò che appartiene al territorio femminile: rosa i vestiti e i giocattoli delle bambine, rosa gli oggetti e gli accessori delle donne; ma rosa è anche il colore scelto dalle donne in marcia nello sciopero globale dell’8 marzo 2017. Il rosa è diventato un significante che serve a delimitare i confini di genere solo nel secolo scorso. Quando e perché è successo? Quando e perché è divenuto così di moda? La divisione dei colori - rosa per le femmine e blu per i maschi - è uno dei tanti dispositivi per il mantenimento dell’ordine di genere, un ordine rigorosamente binario che non prevede sconfinamenti e che ingabbia non solo il femminile, ma anche, o forse soprattutto, il maschile. Ancora oggi, i maschi devono mostrarsi diversi dalle femmine, ma si iniziano a intravvedere significativi segnali di cambiamento, che generano forme di resistenza. Perché le sfide all’ordine di genere fanno paura? Attraverso una ricerca sugli stereotipi di genere nelle scuole di infanzia genovesi, si è provato a rispondere a queste e altre domande, entrando nelle scuole, parlando con le insegnanti, facendo osservazione nelle classi e provando a catturare il punto di vista creativo di bambine e bambini.

    Description: According to Carlo Ginzburg, culture is not only the scholars’ knowledge, but it is also made of all the mixture of a population attitudes, beliefs and behaviours. In this sense, objects are one of the culture’s main expressions. Using materiality as a key, the volume analyses the history of the Neapolitan society during the Eighteenth century in some of its multiple articulations: aristocracy, law men, middle class, lower class. The idea of defining the strata of the ancien regime society is now considered unfeasible, partly because the criteria of definition and legitimation were multiple and different at the time: legal certifications, occupation, geographical origin, wealth. In this complicated universe, owning specific goods was part of the process of definition of the individual affiliation to a group, in terms of having a similar life style, as well as adopting the same ideals. The objects, inherited and annotated into inventories, useful to understand this phaenomenon, were not only precious dresses and jewels, but also iron spoons, lead cruxes, or glass beads. Despite their physical features, the value of these goods was not just economic; it stands also in the symbolic meaning they carried.

    Description: La cultura, come ha affermato Carlo Ginzburg, non è solo la sapienza dei dotti, ma anche quel «complesso di atteggiamenti, credenze, codici di comportamento» che caratterizza una popolazione. Una delle sue espressioni fondamentali è costituita dagli oggetti. Utilizzando la materialità come chiave di accesso, il volume indaga la storia della società napoletana durante il Settecento in alcune delle sue molteplici articolazioni: aristocrazia, togati, ceto medio e popolo. L’idea di definire con precisione le componenti della società di antico regime si è ormai dimostrata utopistica, anche perché i criteri di definizione e di legittimazione erano allora molteplici e variegati: attestazioni giuridiche, occupazione, provenienza geografica, potere economico. In questo complicato universo, il possesso di specifici beni costituiva un elemento importante nel definire l’appartenenza degli individui a un gruppo, in quanto assunzione di un comune stile di vita, ma soprattutto in quanto condivisione di elementi ideali. Le ricchezze da cui è possibile cogliere queste dinamiche socio-culturali, lasciate in eredità e annotate negli inventari, non erano solo costituite da sontuosi gioielli o abiti sfarzosi; potevano essere anche cucchiai di ferro, crocifissi di piombo o perle di vetro colorato. Eppure, quali che fossero le loro caratteristiche, gli oggetti non avevano solo un valore economico, ma erano anche portatori di significati simbolici.

    Description: The feudal lordship of Southern Italy and in Southern Italy is a long-lasting historiographic theme, which has taken on new life in recent years. The rethinking of the interpretative categories of the medieval lordship, a series of in-depth analyses of the late-medieval rural societies and the characteristics of the feudal powers, the detailed reconstructions of their forms of administration and management, the investigations into the semantics of representations have allowed the overcoming of that historiographic paradigm of a Southern baronial class which was internally homogeneous and monolithic in its orientations. Aiming to follow this path, this book puts a case study forth: the lordship of the Orsini, counts of Nola, between Terra di Lavoro and Principato Ultra (1293-1528). Using a wide variety of sources (documentary, literary, iconographic and architectural), the author reconstructs how the Orsini were able to entrench themselves within this territory, exposing their network of relationships with Nola’s most prominent families, and analysing the processes of their self-representation through artistic patronage.

Il ripensamento delle categorie interpretative del fenomeno signorile basso-medievale, una serie di approfondite analisi delle società rurali tardo-medievali e dei caratteri dei poteri feudali, le circostanziate ricostruzioni delle loro forme di amministrazione e di gestione, le indagini sulla semantica delle rappresentazioni e sul loro grado di pervasività hanno consentito il superamento di quel paradigma storiografico di una feudalità regnicola omogenea al proprio interno e monolitica nei suoi orientamenti. Inserendosi in questo dibattito, il volume propone un caso di studio: la signoria degli Orsini di Nola tra la Terra di Lavoro e il Principato Ultra (1293-1528). Attraverso l’esame di una varietà di fonti (documentarie, narrative, iconografiche e architettoniche), con particolare attenzione al secondo Quattrocento, l’Autore riflette sulle forme del radicamento del potere orsiniano, sui suoi rapporti con le élites della contea, sui processi di autorappresentazione. In tal modo egli offre un rilevante contributo allo studio dei signori e delle corti signorili nel Regno di Sicilia.

    Description: Converting and disciplining, these are the two key words of the book. Starting with the Lutheran Reformation, the Church of Rome realised the need both to defend itself against its enemies, old and new, external and internal, and to 'Christianise' its own faithful, to put in order the numerous contradictions that existed between doctrinal prescriptions and the concrete religious experience of the faithful. The instruments used were many, from confraternities to missionaries, inquisitors, the rediscovery of the first martyrs and the catacombs. What emerges, from the many sources used in the text, is an unruly Christianity, often unaware even of basic dogmas. Through various case studies, the reader is presented with a religious history of the modern age, and in particular of the 18th century, used as a passepartout to understand the changes in popular mentality at a time when the Church was gradually forced to redesign its role in society.

    Description: This volume addresses one of the most debated topics in the historiography of the Spanish Monarchy in the Early Modern Age: its political nature. It examines the most interesting aspects of the Hispanic polycentric model, which presents the Monarchy as a political entity composed of several interconnected units that not only interacted with the king, but also with each other. These connections contributed to the modulation of Court politics and the generation of new forms of collaboration, competition and negotiation. The analysis of four case studies, involving individuals, families and power groups that managed to move within or on the margins of institutional channels, between the Italian and Iberian territories of the Monarchy, allows us to interpret this political entity as something more than the simple juxtaposition of kingdoms under a single king. The result was a State capable of strengthening itself also through the interactions that took place between the local and global spheres thanks to the presence of an articulated system of networks.

Sono presi in esame gli aspetti più interessanti del modello policentrico ispanico, che presenta la Monarchia come un’entità politica composta da diverse unità interconnesse, che non solo interagivano con il re, ma anche tra loro, contribuendo alla modulazione della politica di Corte e alla generazione di nuove forme di collaborazione, competizione e negoziazione. L’analisi di quattro casi di studio, che riguardano individui, famiglie e gruppi di potere che riescono a muoversi all’interno o ai margini dei canali istituzionali, tra i territori italiani e iberici della Monarchia, consente di interpretare questa entità politica come qualcosa di più della semplice giustapposizione di regni sotto un unico re. Ne risulta uno Stato capace di rafforzarsi anche attraverso le interazioni che si realizzavano fra l’ambito locale e quello globale grazie alla presenza di un articolato sistema di reti.

    Description: The videogame is the emblematic contemporary medium that invite to think about man's new ways of making knowledge and experience of the world. Video-gaming means for the user to access the writing of a spatial narrative, consisting of virtual environments to navigate, actions to perform, and multimedia representations to interact with. Today, the videogame is also beginning to be adopted in museum institutions, which are experimenting innovative languages in order to actualize their own way of telling the artworks and collections, offering more interactive experiences appropriate for new cultural audiences. To ignore this new narrative mode would mean for museums to create a barrier towards a large audience and, consequently, to hinder the cultural and communicative action they are called upon to provide. The videogame, in fact, can become a tool capable of increasing museum accessibility: the digital one, through the use of everyday technologies; the cognitive one, by reducing the sense of cultural inadequacy and emotional detachment for those audiences, especially younger ones, who do not identify with traditional methods of cultural transmission and who are stimulated by experiences guided by factors such as discovery, free exploration, interaction and immersion; and the physical-perceptual one, as it is capable of creating new forms of relationship between virtual game space and physical museum space. The book therefore reflects on the need to deal more methodically and systematically with the spatial narrative model used in the new medium, making visual procedural maps for its aware use in both Entertainment Games and Cultural Games. The research analyzes the virtual game space as a device for organizing narrative elements that can activate important parts of the player's interpretive process, as a tool for constructing museum-related stories and creating innovative experiences of Cultural Heritage fruition.

    Description: ll videogioco è il medium emblematico della contemporaneità che invita a riflettere sulle nuove modalità dell’uomo di fare conoscenza ed esperienza del mondo. Video-giocare significa per l’utente accedere alla scrittura di una narrazione spaziale, fatta di ambienti virtuali da navigare, azioni da compiere e rappresentazioni multimediali con cui interagire. Il videogioco inizia oggi ad essere accolto anche nelle istituzioni museali che stanno sperimentando linguaggi innovativi al fine di attua¬lizzare il proprio modo di raccontare le opere e le collezioni, offrendo esperienze più interattive e adatte ai nuovi pubblici culturali. Disinteressarsi di questa nuova modalità narrativa significherebbe per i musei creare una barriera nei confronti di un vasto pubblico e, di conseguenza, ostacolare l’azione culturale e comunicativa che sono chiamati a svolgere. Il videogioco, infatti, può divenire uno strumento in grado di incrementare l’accessibilità museale: quella digitale, attraverso l’uso di tecnologie d’uso quotidiano; quella cognitiva, riducendo il senso di inadeguatezza culturale e di distacco emotivo per quei pubblici, specialmente più giovani, che non si riconoscono nei metodi tradizionali di trasmissione culturale e che sono stimolati da esperienze guidate da fattori quali la scoperta, la libera esplorazione, l’interazione e l’immersione; quella fisico-percettiva, in quanto capace di creare nuove forme di relazione tra spazio virtuale di gioco e spazio fisico museale. Il volume riflette pertanto sull’esigenza di occuparsi con maggiore metodologia e sistematicità del modello narrativo spaziale utilizzato nel nuovo medium, costruendo delle mappe procedurali visive per un suo uso consapevole sia negli Entertainment Games sia nei Cultural Games. La ricerca analizza lo spazio virtuale di gioco come mezzo per organizzare elementi narrativi in grado di innescare parti importanti del processo interpretativo del giocatore, come strumento per costruire storie legate al museo e creare esperienze innovative di fruizione del patrimonio culturale.

    Description: If “back to the things themselves” is the motto of phenomenology, this volume aims to return to perception, over 75 years after Maurice Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception. In this book, phenomenology discovered perception for the first time, primarily understood as bodily perception. Since then, philosophy has never ceased investigating its meaning, not only in the various philosophical domains (epistemology, aesthetics and even moral theory), but also – and increasingly – from a multidisciplinary perspective that links the problem of perception to questions pertaining to anthropology and human geography (the topic of situationality in space), cognitive psychology (the body schema and the perception of the external world), and semiotics (perception as a means of expression). This volume, therefore, presents the natural continuation of a collective reflection on the perceptive turn made by Merleau-Ponty, and on how this takes on a new social meaning, a new epistemological and cultural value that prompts us once again to ask the following question: what about perception today?

Per la prima volta, in quel testo, la fenomenologia scopriva la percezione, che è in primo luogo percezione corporea. Da allora la filosofia non ha smesso di interrogarne il significato, non solo nei vari domini filosofici (nella teoria della conoscenza, nell’estetica e persino nella morale), ma anche, e sempre di più, in un’ottica multidisciplinare che lega il problema della percezione a questioni antropologiche e di geografia umana (il tema della situazionalità nello spazio), di psicologia cognitiva (lo schema corporeo e la percezione del mondo esterno), o di semiotica (la percezione come mezzo espressivo). Questo volume rappresenta dunque il naturale proseguimento di una riflessione collettiva attorno alla svolta percettiva operata da Merleau-Ponty, e su come quest’ultima accolga su di sé un rinnovato significato sociale, un nuovo valore epistemologico e culturale che spinge ancora una volta a porci la seguente domanda: che ne è della percezione oggi?

    Description: La violenza fra i giovani, quella violenza efferata che colpisce se stessi o gli altri, si presenta per gli adulti come perturbante: muta, senza ragione, senza senso, pura spinta distruttiva. Le risposte che vediamo dispiegarsi a livello sociale in generale testimoniano i loro effetti di impotenza: né la comprensione, né l’autorità, paiono infatti poter arginare questo tipo di fenomeni. E per i giovani che vi sono coinvolti, raramente si apre un’interrogazione: la violenza agita non fa sintomo, se intendiamo il sintomo nel senso psicoanalitico, come soluzione di compromesso, risultante di una sostituzione del soddisfacimento pulsionale; la violenza agita non produce interrogazione. Questo volume nasce da questa prospettiva: lasciarsi interrogare dal fenomeno della violenza nelle giovani generazioni per cogliere, da un lato cosa nel nostro legame sociale produce violenza, dall’altro se e come l’esperienza psicoanalitica possa proporre una via per tessere un legame laddove il legame sembra presentarsi come impossibile.

With a Fulbright Scholar Award, and the collaboration of the University Federico II and the Assessorato alle pari opportunità del Comune di Napoli, art-based research culminated in the creation of a video installation. Filmed interviews were presented on 14 video monitors creating a multi-layered conversation about domestic violence, particularly during the Covid-19 lockdowns in Italy. It included the voices of survivors of domestic violence and the advocates who help them, psychologists, researchers, and abusers themselves. The immersive installation was accompanied by a panel discussion that was open to the public.

Grazie ad una borsa di studio Fulbright, la ricerca art-based per questo progetto ha raggiunto l’apice nell’organizzazione di un’installazione video. Le video-interviste sono state presentate su 14 schermi, creando una conversazione multilivello sulla violenza domestica, in particolare durante il lockdown da Covid-19 in Italia. Essa comprendeva le voci delle donne sopravvissute alla violenza domestica e di psicologhe e ricercatrici che le avevano sostenute e quelle degli stessi autori di violenza. La video-mostra, aveva un effetto intenso, immersivo e coinvolgente, ed è stata seguita da un dibattito aperto al pubblico.

    Description: Every civilization has developed different forms of knowledge and techniques to manage and exploit water, an essential element for human life, but also to defend itself from the threats that can derive from it. In preindustrial times, the need to manage such a precious commodity led to the development of different technologies, the construction of infrastructures, the creation of special judiciaries, but it also fuelled conflicts between subjects who claimed privileged or exclusive access to water resources. In addition, the risks posed by the proximity of waterways or lake basins often led societies to develop prevention techniques and practices. This range of issues is at the heart of the essays collected in this volume, which examine various medium and large cities located in Central Western Europe - from the Rhine Valley to the Iberian Peninsula, from Paris to Palermo - between the fourteenth and the nineteenth centuries.

Inoltre, i rischi derivanti dalla prossimità di corsi d’acqua o di bacini lacustri hanno spesso indotto le società a sviluppare tecniche e pratiche di prevenzione.     Description: Un quinto del XXI secolo è già alle nostre spalle e l’insieme delle musiche d’arte composte dal 2001 ad oggi è a dir poco imponente. Le domande che si può porre uno storico della musica dinanzi all’attuale scenario sono molteplici. In che modo le musiche d’arte d’inizio Duemila si distinguono – se davvero si distinguono -- da quelle del tardo Novecento? Si deve parlare di un Novecento di longue durée oppure emergono fattori di discontinuità? E l’eventuale discontinuità tra XX e XXI secolo è in qualche modo paragonabile alle maggiori svolte storico-musicali registrate, per esempio, a cavaliere tra Cinque e Seicento oppure tra Otto e Novecento? E ancora: come interagisce il corpus odierno di Western Art Music con le musiche ‘altre’? E in che rapporto esso si pone con le varie arti contemporanee, dalla letteratura alle arti visive, dal cinema all’architettura? Qual è l’impatto sulla creatività musicale delle nuove tecnologie, di Internet, dei new media, dell’intelligenza artificiale? Come si ridefiniscono i rapporti tra committenti, editori, compositori, interpreti, critici, fruitori? Come si può promuovere la musica dal vivo durante un’emergenza sanitaria?     Description: A fifth of the 21st century is already behind us and the set of art music composed from 2001 to today is impressive. The current scenario raises many questions. How does the art music of the early 2000s differ - if it does - from that of the late twentieth century? Should we consider the twentieth century of ‘longue durée’ or do factors of discontinuity emerge? And is the alleged discontinuity between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in some way comparable to the major turning points in music history, such as, for instance, those that happened between the 16th and 17th centuries or between the 19th and 20th centuries? And again: how does the contemporary corpus of Western Art Music interact with other genres? And how does it relate to the various contemporary arts, from literature to the visual arts, from cinema to architecture? What is the impact on musical creativity of new technologies, the Internet, new media, artificial intelligence? How are the relationships between organizers, publishers, composers, performers, critics, and audiences redefined? How can live music be promoted during a health emergency? Some indications and numerous insights emerge in this volume which collects the proceedings of a study meeting promoted by the University of Naples "Federico II", which took place in streaming on April 13, 2021.     Description: Following Percy Ernst Schramm’s studies on Staatssymbolik, historians have in general considered medieval royal portraits as images mirroring medieval notions of power and political ideology that can legitimate power and strengthen admiration of the king. This interpretation has also had a crucial impact on the analysis of monarchic ideologies and sacral kingship during the Middle Ages. However, the research prompted in Germany on the social praxis of Memoria has opened up new perspectives, by creating an active historiographical debate about the social function and meaning of royal portraits in the liturgical context during the Middle Ages (political/propagandistic vs religious/devotional). This book aims to foster this debate by analysing the functions and meanings of monarchic pictures characterized by sacral figures and symbols and religious and liturgical contexts in the Norman kingdom of Sicily (1130-1189). In the specific, it investigates three royal portraits: St. Nikolas blesses Roger II in the Basilica of St. Nikolas in Bari; Christ crows Roger II in the Church of St. Mary of the Admiral in Palermo; and Christ crowns William II in the Cathedral of Monreale. By going beyond traditional methodological tactics, its exegesis avoids a ‘one-way’ approach in which artwork is analysed in an ‘autonomous’ manner that extrapolates it from its historical, political and functional context. Moreover, it studies royal portraiture as part of a wider communicative strategy to create a mise-en-scène around the monarchic figure by comparing the iconographic sources and the information provided by written evidence regarding the monarch’s official kingship. This new analysis of the Norman royal portraits in the religious and liturgical context leads to original perspectives and uses new cues to reformulate the traditional ideas held by historiography in this regard and on political ideologies and royal sacrality.

    Description: Disasters have always been a key theme in artistic creation and visual language, as confirmed by the prevalence and persistence of images depicting the unleashing of the forces of nature and their consequences on cities and the landscape. In particular, volcanoes, the dispensers of death and desolation but also of sublime scenes, have constantly inspired painters and engravers, also soliciting the curiosity of those who wished to understand how flames, ash, and fiery stones could pour from the bowels of the earth. In the early modern age, the reactivation of volcanoes in the Phlegraean and Vesuvian areas, after long centuries of dormancy, marked the beginning of a new interest among European readers in the phenomena they produced. Having sensed that new spaces were opening up in the publishing market, both local and international, many bookseller-printers began to publish a large number of tales, treatises, collections of verse and pictures relating to eruptions, which were going to satisfy the tastes and interests of a varied public composed of naturalists, archaeologists, scholars, cultured and wealthy travelers who covered the Italian peninsula in the course of their grand tour, but also of more modest onlookers. On such varied production this volume, arising from the exhibition Eruzioni di carta. Four Centuries of Volcanoes in Print, offers multiple points of view through a body of works dating from the second half of the 16th to the early 20th century.

    Description: I disastri sono da sempre un tema fondamentale nella creazione artistica e nel linguaggio visivo, come confermano la diffusione e la persistenza di immagini che ritraggono lo scatenamento delle forze della natura e le loro conseguenze sulle città e sul paesaggio. In particolare, i vulcani, dispensatori di morte e desolazione ma anche di scene sublimi, hanno costantemente ispirato pittori e incisori, sollecitando inoltre la curiosità di chi intendeva comprendere come dalle viscere della terra potessero fuoriuscire fiamme, ceneri e pietre infuocate. All’inizio dell’età moderna il riattivarsi dei vulcani nell’area flegrea e vesuviana, dopo lunghi secoli di quiescenza, segnò l’inizio di un nuovo interesse dei lettori europei verso i fenomeni da essi prodotti. Avendo intuito che si aprivano nuovi spazi nel mercato editoriale, tanto locale quanto internazionale, molti librai-stampatori cominciarono a pubblicare una gran quantità di racconti, di trattati, di raccolte di versi e di immagini relativi alle eruzioni, che andavano a soddisfare i gusti e gli interessi di un variegato pubblico composto da naturalisti, archeologi, eruditi, da colti e ricchi viaggiatori che percorrevano la penisola italiana nel corso del loro grand tour, ma anche da più modesti curiosi. Su tale variegata produzione questo volume, scaturito dalla mostra Eruzioni di carta. Quattro secoli di stampa sui vulcani, offre molteplici punti di vista, attraverso un corpus di opere databili dalla seconda metà del XVI agli inizi del XX secolo.
