Description: Giulia is a maiden abandoned at the birth in Florence of Francesco I dei Medici and Bianca Cappello, who has already been the subject of historical research and some re-elaboration in literary and cinematographic terms. Thanks to the richness of the sources now found, a completely new and exhaustive biography of this 16th century woman is presented, with an unpublished version of her personality and history. Florence, the Casentino and the Valdinievole are the places of her life, which fully reflects the condition of women in her era, faced by Giulia with courage and determination. The discourse develops on two intertwined planes, that of historical analysis and that of its narrative integration, with the hypothetical reconstruction of the areas left in the shadows. This book enters by right into historiographical traditions now widely codified and into a literary tradition defined by Giacomo Debenedetti as 'historiography of interiority'.

Description: This is the first of the two volumes dedicated to Hermeticism and Florence published by Firenze University Press (the second one entitled Luzi, Bigongiari, Parronchi, Bodini, Sereni can be purchased separately). Between 1930 and 1945, a group of young people started one of the most vibrant literary seasons of the 20th century in Florence, known as Florentine Hermeticisms (or simply Hermeticism). Many of its members recognised themselves in a common narrative marked by a shared imagination, and in the silent dissent from the rhetoric of the regime, which was contrasted by the radicalism of the ethical request and by the deep bond with the Jewish-Christian, romantic and symbolist roots of the European civilisation. A hundred years after the birth of its protagonists, there is still much wondering on the nature and definition of Hermeticism, on how it was born, on what distinguished it, on what signs it suffered and left. Searching for how it changed, why it was surrounded by passion, prejudices and aversion (as done by the two essential volumes collecting the documents of a memorable conference in which Anna Dolfi involved scholars from all over the world), leads to draw a portrait of the Hermetic authors, its admirers and/or detractors, and to outline the boundaries and the characteristics of a complex chapter of Italian history which began with Fascism and recently ended with the fall of ideologies. Among masters, companions, followers, the figures of Bo, Macrí, Luzi, Bigongiari, Parronchi, Bodini and of the companion Sereni, stand out for the strength of a suggestive writing experience highly meditative, for all the critic, translation, narrative and poetry genres.

Description: This volume brings together a selection of essays on Claudio Magris’ work, aiming to enrich critical debate with a specific focus on interdisciplinary dimension and continuous dialogue with the main European literary traditions. The outcome is an overall study on Magris’ narrative, essayistic and theatrical production, trying to fix his plural and prismatic identity: from the narration of places to an unavoidable ideological tension; from philosophical alphabets to the weight of History; from Myth’s remediation to the abroad reception; from hypotext filigree to real case studies. According to a diachronic perspective, they focus attention on Magris’ works, such as Microcosmi, Alla cieca, Non luogo a procedere and Tempo curvo a Krems.

Description: Unfinished work or interrupted work… It is difficult to find a definition, to identify the theme, to distinguish chance from intentionality. Few 'genres' and / or variations express as the 'unfinished' the same need for what is external to the work and which somehow completes it, bringing the work in a privileged position to create a harmony with our restless modernity. No wonder that in literature, in addition to what has been brutally interrupted, the letters, the diaries, the chronicles of disease and suffering are naturally suspended works. No wonder either that incompleteness accompanies the writings referring to unsolved issues, hidden traumas, silent melancholy. Dictated by choice or by distinct degrees of incapacity, the temptation of the unfinished pursues, urges, deludes its author... The private writings, the sketches, the projects, the papers testify the path necessary for the work to develop and conquer its shape. This book is rich and suggestive and has been conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi. Like its very object, the work is drafted in the perspective of the unfinished and questions some of the many possible examples, along a diachronic arc that goes to literature at figurative arts, theatre, cinema: from Leonardo to Blake, from Ariosto to Stendhal, from Dossi to Gadda, from Kafka to Borges, from Sarraute to Morante, from unknown writers affected by 'cancroregina' to the last Pirandello staged by Tiezzi, up to Fellini of the impossible Mastorna ... At the centre of the volume the readers will find a section with the typescript pages and the unpublished notebooks of / for the work La scelta by Giuseppe Dessí. They lead to the limits of white space, where the chambre claire fixes what is hidden beyond the writing with few, rarefied signs.

Description: Musica, scienziato!, a work that cannot be reduced to pre-existing models, establishes a new literary genre, the scientifantasia, which, although part of a literary tradition which has included eminent figures such as the acrobatic engineer Gadda and the chemist Levi, is here presented in a totally new physiognomy. The scientist-writer, Narrator of the monologues, becomes a musical storyteller that makes up stories through the languages of his time, and the 'scientific word' ends up "exorcising the evil of history and the weight of existence” in order to soften and redeem them, placing them within the range of knowledge and expression without which, quoting the Shakespearean lines recited at the end of Revealing Ravel, man is "fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils. / The motions of his spirit are dull as night, / and his affections dark as Erebus".

Description: Starting with the great authors of the past, autobiographical requests have been a distinctive feature of Scandinavian literatures. Today, after the modernist experiments of ego building, there is the affirmation of narrative and poetic works which question the boundary between autobiographical truth and fiction, further stimulating the lively, innovative and articulated debate on autobiography in Northern Europe, which has been in development since the 1980s. The 24 authors of the volume (Italian and Scandinavian scholars who are active in Italy or abroad, Scandinavian researchers and writers interested in Italy) illustrate the plurality and uses of autobiographical texts from the 16th century to current days, illuminate areas of a vast territory, investigate little studied texts or go back to questioning the classics.

Description: The Italian contributions to the XIII International Congress of Slavists (Ljubljana, 15-21 August 2003) had a very limited circulation between the participants in the congress and the restricted circle of experts. Considering the high scientific value of the individual contributions, to which we continue to refer in the framework of Slavic literature, it was decided to publish these acts in the series "Library of Slavic Studies" also to celebrate the ten years of its existence. Faced with a consolidated tradition of studies in the philological and literary field, Italian Slavistics of the beginning of the millennium found itself facing new needs. On the one hand, a new generation of linguists has established themselves, who have developed a series of innovative research on Slavic languages, especially in the contrastive field. On the other hand, new research paths have developed in contemporary literature, especially in relation to the most recent historical circumstances which have seen profound cultural transformations in the Slavic countries themselves, with the need to reconstruct consolidated literary canons also on the basis of the literature of emigration. The same philological research has been able to question itself again on its role by taking up in a different form traditional issues such as the Cyril-Methodian question, the problem of biblical citations or the debate on the Latin Slavia and the Orthodox Slavia, as well as the more traditional ecdotic issues manifesting a new sensitivity starting from religious issues. Alberto Alberti is researcher in Slavistics at the University of Bologna.

Description: This book was born from an observation and a desire. The starting point is that the multilingual nature of Andrea Zanzotto's poetry becomes almost invisible by virtue of being evident in the eyes of its readers. The babelic hypersensitivity of the petèl’s poet is certainly not absent in critical studies, yet this work addresses it in a systematic way for the first time, by investigating on the multiple connections between poetic writing and languages. The desire that accompanied this reflection was to lead it with a "prismatic" gaze, crossing the poetry's multilingualism and the poet’s translation practice, and summoning the many voices of its translators around the Zanzottian multivocality. A series of unpublished documents in the appendix, and the interventions of poets like Cecchinel, Demarcq and Rueff, alongside those of the best European experts of Zanzotto, add a special significance to this work. Speech given on June 26, 2007 at the Locanda da Lino in Solighetto (TV, Italy) on the occasion of the presentation of the book by F. Carbognin, L’«altro spazio». Scienza, paesaggio, corpo nella poesia di Andrea Zanzotto (Nuova Editrice Magenta, 2007) and of issue no. 230 of «l’immaginazione» (year XXII, May 2007). Videotaped and included in the DVD Tribute to Andrea Zanzotto (Viviafilm production), which also includes speeches by Niva Lorenzini, Marco Antonio Bazzocchi and Silvana Tamiozzo Goldmann.

Description: Margherita Guidacci's correspondence with Tiziano Minarelli is filled with memories and poetic occasions, and it allows us to shed light on the genesis of her latest poetic collections (from Inno alla gioia in 1983 to Anelli del tempo in 1993), to gather new sources of inspiration and to reconstruct the emotional and cultural background accompanying the writing of the letters. This correspondence encourages reflections on the Italian literary scene, as seen from the point of view of those who, like Margherita Guidacci, contributed to it by combining poetic activity (in Italian), translation (of a a third language as well), study and teaching of the English and American literature, and cultural journalism. It testifies to an intense friendship, a common passion for literature and reading, a constant sharing of poetic texts through transcriptions and quotations, and a growing familiarity.

Description: The commentary of Lettere e rime which Chiara Matraini (1515-1604) published in Venice with the editor Moretti in 1597, when she was 82, intends to provide an organic analysis of the composition, of the relationship between the genres, of the modalities of the “imitatio” and of the philosophical, social and cultural substrate acting as a background in her last chansonnier. The study also focuses on her stylistic changes over a period of forty years (1555-1597), from the adherence to Petrarch and Bembo’s canon to the end-of-the-century Mannerism, as well as on the counter-reformist twist characterizing a parallel writing of philosophical and devotional nature, which can be seen here between the lines. The investigation also takes the liber of Lettere e rime as a deliberately organic and structured whole in the meeting between the letters and the poems. By virtue of its ‘marginality’ as well, this shows a complex work, emerging together with the many afterthoughts which animated the long, almost century-long, life of the author from Lucca.

Description: The twenty-three essays of this volume represent the contributions of the Italian delegation to the 16th International Congress of Slavic Studies, which took place in Belgrade in August 2018. The essays, written in Italian, English, Russian and Serbian, are divided into three sections: linguistics, philology and Slavic literatures. Just as the range of the touched topics is very wide, so is their time span, going from the prehistoric and protohistoric eras to the present day. The covered topics extend from the Proto-Slavic language to the writing, linguistic and literary traditions of the Slavic ecclesiastical civilization, from the linguistic and cultural relations between Italy and Russia to a particular 18th-century Illyrian dictionary. In the field of synchronic linguistics, the essays include: a study of dialectology and sociolinguistics in the borderland between Ukraine and Belarus; the ways to express the concept of completeness in Russian; the study of some concessive constructs of the Russian language using the methods of “constructionist grammar”, a particular aspect of the Russian and Bulgarian verbal systems; and finally, the different suffixes used in the formation of the aspectual pairs in the Resian dialect. In the literary field, the essays topics range from Gumilev and Chlebnikov to literature and ecology; from Armenian writers who write in Russian to the neo-Latin poem “The bison’s song” and to the humanistic and Renaissance reflections in modern Ukrainian literature; from an Italian scholar of Serbian literature in the first half of the 20th century to the image of the “strong woman” in the Serbian literature of the same time. Therefore, thanks to their variety, these essays offer a very concrete idea of the several existing currents within the research in Slavic Studies in Italy.

Description: Psychoanalysis spread earlier and faster in Russia than in Western Europe. According to the author, there are three main reasons for this. First, psychoanalysis is based on the fictional structure of patients’s narratives. In a literary-centric country such as Russia, the ‘literary character’ of psychoanalysis quickly attracts the Russian intelligentsia. Secondly, the formal similarities between literary and psychoanalytic language, and the close connection between the poetic word and the rhetoric of the unconscious, contribute to rendering Freudian language particularly familiar in Russia. Thirdly, the Silver Age, with its attention to the symbol, the ‘other’, and the double, contributes to increasing interest in the theory of the unconscious. This will continue until after the October Revolution as the state relies on psychoanalysis to help forge the new Soviet citizen. This ‘alliance’, however, is short-lived, and Freudian psychoanalytic theory will be ostracized from the 1930s up to the end of the Soviet regime.

Description: Giorgio Trentin (1917-2013), eldest son of the anti-fascist exile Silvio and brother of the unionist Bruno, was one of the greatest connoisseurs, enthusiasts and 'defenders' of engraving art in Italy. With this conference promoted a few months after his death, the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice and the Centro documentazione e ricerca Trentin have brought together the researches of scholars from different backgrounds and the testimonies of those who knew Giorgio Trentin. The aim was the one of restoring unity to the two 'faces' of his figure: on one hand the civil and anti-fascist militancy (a characteristic and unmistakable mark of the family) on the other the commitment in the artistic field, which represented personal space of Giorgio or, better, his personal declination of that common militancy. To him, in fact, the engraving technique was an indispensable paradigm of moral rigour and the search for truth.

Description: Avanti il divorzio is undoubtedly a fundamental work for the history of women and civil rights. Anna Franchi is fighting, together with the socialists, both for freedom of choice and for the right to civil and political vote, which were denied to women. The texts also deal with the struggles for the right to work and for fair wages. Moreover, they present unpublished profiles of personalities who devoted their fight of little hope and much courage to the cause. Anna Franchi was also the first woman who believed in the movement of the Macchiaioli: she wrote the history of the artistic movement, got to know its interpreters and sought for them a market that recognised their value. The friendship with Giovanni Fattori and the correspondence with many painters are relevant: the letters reflect not only the artistic aesthetic of the Macchiaioli, but also their moods, relationships, travels, successes and many sad moments that were confided to Fattori's friend, Anna.

Description: Journalism invented the interview, a tool to investigate the lives of writers. This indiscretion triggers the authors’ reaction: a new literary genre, the imagined interview, becomes a shield to protect their own intimacy as wells as a tactic to overturn the press’ spotlight, primarily against the interviewers. Pretending to be like them, the authors will also be able to talk to the ghosts of our imagination. All their interlocutors become characters shaped by irony, satire, self-representation. Through the creative variations of the imagined interview and across different media (publishing, radio, television, digital devices), this book shows how the media context, with its laws and conflicts, is the scene of writers’ counterattack—a battle fought by the double-edged sword of journalistic imitation and fictional invention.

Description: If it intends to enhance awareness and to stimulate intellectual and cultural maturity, literature cannot ignore – and when it survives over time does not ignore – the great conquests of philosophical thought and the fundamental stages marked by the progress of scientific knowledge. A scientific result and a poetic result both represent an internally-ordered fragment of reality which moves and stirs us by the intrinsic beauty of the image that it evokes and its significance at the level of meaning. Both scientific and literary languages, each in its own way, tend to the decodification and representation of the external world. Imagination, intuition and rationality come together in creativity, in the construction of scientific models and of literary styles.

Description: The overbearing affirmation of the body, with its instincts and impulses, and an effort aimed at suppressing that same push: this powerful dialectic deeply marks Beckett's works, and becomes a crucial reflection of the more general tension between a vain waiting for the end and the need to move forward. The close investigation of the texts suggests a special link with the thought of Arthur Schopenhauer, revealing in particular the contiguity between the concept of Noluntas and the search, by many of Beckett's characters, for “will-lessness”, a peculiar state of quiet and abstraction from reality. Starting from these observations, this study investigates the theme of the body within Beckett's poetics, especially in light of his relationship with the Schopenhauer's Will theory.

Description: Against the background of the cities of Lecce, Parma and Florence (Macrì’s well-known “Dimore vitali”), between the 1940s and the 1970s, an almost forgotten author (poet, translator from French, writer) and his “teacher” stand out among the fiercest critics of the twentieth century. There are many stories intertwining in the 142 epistolary pieces collected in this volume, carefully transcribed and annotated by Dario Collini. Personal stories (particularly letters are entrusted with the unprecedented and intriguing portrait of a multifaceted, complex, elusive Pagan) and collective stories, such as those told by «Libera Voce» and «Critone», which count among the cultural initiatives that helped bring the peripheral reality of Salento closer to the major literary centres of the peninsula. Along a wide chronological span, the story of a deep friendship is also revealed, which did not claim to erase the distance between the two correspondents, but which would continue over time nevertheless, nourished by “gratitude”, “esteem” and “trust”.

Description: The work Intorno a Boccaccio/Boccaccio e dintorni 2015 stems from the international seminar that was held in Certaldo on the 9th September 2015, and is the second edition of an initiative which the ENGB National Association has now made an annual appointment. The purpose of these seminars, aimed primarily at young scholars, is to collect and develop the research prospects emerged in occasion of the centenary celebrations in 2013 and to offer a place for a new and contemporary discussion. The topics covered during the seminar, mainly focused on the Latin and vernacular work of Boccaccio, address (with specific attention to the Decameron) aspects of tradition and textual criticism, history of the language, literary criticism and history of the miniature.

Description: This book edited by Dario Collini is a collection of the work by several young researchers (belonging to the University of Florence’s research groups “GREM” and “NGEM”), who have studied the 17,000 letters belonging to the of the Macrì Association under Anna Dolfi’s guidance. The aim of this book is to offer an extraordinary work tool to those who are interested in Hermeticism, literary criticism and poetry of the 20th century in Italy. The flashes coming from these letters, be them shadows from the bottom or “intermittent lights”, are signs of the human genesis of culture, because they retain traces of what is linked to everyday life, and contributes to the construction of the '”great” history and of the intellectual and political planning alongside it. Therefore readings, books, magazines, collaborations, friendships, resentments, travels, literary and private passions emerge from these documents, so as to give voice to an era and its protagonists.

Description: The lucky discovery in Athens of the letters of Luzi, Traverso and Macrí to Margherita Dalmati allowed to complete the epistolary of the Greek poet and harpsichordist preserved in the archives of Florence and Urbino. The 341 pieces available thanks to Sara Moran's research allow us to trace her contacts with the great protagonists of post-war literary Florence, also showing their links with the Roman and Milanese environment. Throughout the “thaw” years, the letters offer the reconstruction of Dalmati’ militancy in Cyprus’ struggle for independence, of her friendship with Cristina Campo, of the translations into neo-Greek of Luzi's poetry. The 60s and 70s are marked by her promotion of Italian poetry in Greece, and of Greek poetry in Italy, through collaboration with magazines and the translation for Einaudi, together with Nelo Risi, of Kavafi’s poems. The letters - tender, funny, ironic and affectionate - of the four voices involved in the book illuminate important moments of the culture of the second half of the 20th Century as well as of the protagonists’ life, while among and around all of them an enchanting woman with her musical voice can be admired, whose name was little known until now.

Description: Despite having been written at different times and being characterised by a great variety of subject and a multiplicity of approach, the essays of Gabriele Mazzitelli gathered here all appear to have been triggered by a precise and organic project of exploration. In fact what pervades them all is his love of the book, seen on the one hand as an unrepeatable and magnificent object produced by individual genius and the cultural legacy, and on the other as a medium of knowledge, an intellectual and spiritual bond. The book beloved of Mazzitelli is that of the rich and variegated Slav cultural tradition. It is the Russian book first and foremost, but not only, and not in the abstract dimension of the erudite bibliographic citation, but in the lively, shifting and at times perishable dimension of the library, seen as a living site of encounter and study. The life of the Slav book in Italy depends upon its full accessibility and its complete valorisation. The studies in this volume represent a crucial passage towards the full realisation of this goal.

Description: Retracing Dessí’s collaboration in the magazines “L’Orto”, “Primato” and “Cronache” directed by Giorgio Vecchietti, among stories, essays and reviews that have remained largely unpublished, means deepening the writer’s artistic development by exploring into the creative laboratory of his debut. The 36 texts collected and commented by Francesca Bartolini allow us to analyse the thematic and stylistic approaches that were further developed and deepened in the subsequent production. At the same time they take into account the years of the fascist dictatorship, allowing us to investigate the development of an intellectual conscience engaged in an anti-fascist, rebel movement typical of many writers of that generation. Weaving the critical discourse with the reading of the correspondence, the complex relationship that linked Dessí to the three editorial offices is noted, testifying to the passion of a young artist eager to follow his inclination, but also aware of the difficulty of preserving his freedom and identity in the limitations of the regime.

Description: Literary trompe-l'oeil intends to emancipate the enigmatic and distinctive figure of Hauff from his long and unjust marginalization resulting from a now outdated current of criticism, to offer a new interpretation of his Märchen for a general rereading of this modern literary caricaturist's works. On approaching his texts, one cannot but notice how they are imbued with continual and insistent, bewitching, caustic and alienating allusions, just like the Mona Lisa's smile. With a constant critical scepticism and a subtle illusionist skill, this demythologized 'budding Satan' looks at the present situation through the 'diabolic lenses' of irony, making his works a sort of literary Befreiungskrieg, in which he lays claim to a heterotopic space of free fantastic-humorist expression, along the undulating route leading from Sterne to Heine via Jean Paul.

Description: Giovanni di Pagolo Morelli’s Ricordi, long known to historians, are published here for the first time in an integral version which is also linguistically faithful to the original manuscript. This new critical edition is accompanied by a long introductory essay on the author, the intentions of his work and the results it had by the heirs to whom it was addressed. The 74 years of Giovanni Morelli’s life, from the 1370s to the mid 1440s, are placed in a decisive time span for the history of Florence, and they are marked by a strong social mobility of which the Morellis, a family with humble origins, were the protagonists. Reading the Ricordi, and combining them with the analysis of the substantial remaining documentation borne by the author and his family, help understand the strong push to social rise which animated Morelli, and the reasons for his descendants’ position among Florence’s prominent family scene of the late 15th century.

Description: Margarete Susman (1872-1966), an important figure in German-speaking culture, was an essayist, Kulturtheoretikerin, philosopher, poet and painter. Her vast production - almost unknown in Italy - deals with a variety of topics: from literary criticism to interreligious dialogue, from the study of Romanticism to portraits of great personalities from the past and her time. This book investigates the 'feminine' in Susman from two points of view: from a formal perspective, it describes the path of a writer who, from the early 20th century, has moved between poetry and the essay, passing through the comparison with culture correspondence; from a thematic perspective, he examines the essays in which Susman deals with the sexual difference and the relationship between the 'male' and the 'female’.

Description: The volume begins with an analysis of the reception of Jean Paul in Italy in order to highlight how the Scapigliatura movement raised this author to prominence. In consideration of the development of Italian culture in the second half of the nineteenth century, the book stresses the importance of the German models in the changes in the macro- and microstructures of the literary text. The core of the research revolves around Carlo Dossi's relationship with the works of Jean Paul: from the enthusiasm of his first literary discoveries to his progressive detachment. In this study, the Note azzurre provide a precious source on the life of Dossi, his relationship with contemporary society and his bond with the maestro Jean Paul, leading to a closer investigation of two aspects: the philosophical-aesthetic conception of humour and the use of digression as a narrative element introduced to disorientate the reader.

Description: Soviet society has always been characterised by a marked institutional censorship which, in the face of the power of the written word, has set in motion a series of highly repressive institutions. However, censorship does not necessarily exert its power through forms of coercion; there are also approaches that are implemented through a complex network of cultural institutions that can "produce" society, expunging concepts and attitudes that are a threat to the system and at the same time masterminding a series of organisms designed to forge orthodox behaviour and mindframes, to the extent that the role of the external censor often becomes almost superfluous, being replaced by the "censor of the soul". This book seeks to bring to the fore this second type of censorship, albeit without neglecting the complex repressive machinery set in motion by Soviet power. Description: This book is the first published analysis and interpretation of the collection of literary collages Und. Überhaupt. Stop. Collagen. 1996-2000. by Austrian writer Marlene Streeruwitz. It presents the author and body of her narrative work, analyses her programmatic poetics and investigates the collage as a technique, aesthetic principle and mode of thought, before moving on to the examination of the primary text. It thus addresses a noticeable gap in the reception of Streeruwitz’ work (as this collection has been virtually ignored, also internationally) and provides methodological and aesthetic insights relevant to the analysis of other literary collages, while also providing a comprehensive resource for the study of Streeruwitz and her oeuvre.

Description: The essays published here document the most recent linguistic research carried out in the field of Italian Slavistics. The contributions collected in the first part of the volume analyze the morphological and syntactic structures of various Slavic languages; the second part is dedicated to linguistic use; the last contains three experimental studies on the acquisition of Slavic languages, a particularly promising research area both for glottodidactic applications and for the contribution to studies on the relationship between thought and language. There are several Slavic languages studied (Czech, Polish, Russian, Slovenian, Ukrainian dialects, southern Slavic languages, including the spoken languages of the Pomaks in the Rhodope mountains), different perspectives (diachronic and synchronic) and various methodological approaches, testifying to the richness and progressive maturation of linguistic studies within Italian Slavistics.

Description: Lo spettro semantico del termine colore copre una vasta estensione, dalle accezioni propriamente materiche a quelle traslate.

Description: The Stabat mater, like few other objects of thematics, analyzes the same posture translated into different languages, it tracks the evolution and persistence of a gesture that gives voice to the unacceptability of loss and the immobile duration of pain. From the mères en deuil of the classical antiquity to the fainting of Mary beneath the crucifixions that have marked the history of art - from Jacopone da Todi, from Giotto degli Scrovegni until today, stone and marble reliefs, wooden panels, frescoes, stained glass windows, engravings, tempera, oils, manuscripts, writing, alongside the melodies of Palestrina, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Pergolesi, Boccherini, Rossini - countless works have re-proposed the figure of the grieving mother. In this book we have tried to record the constancy and the alterations of the topos, highlighting the differences that exist between verbal, musical and visual expressions in relation to the changing times, the reversal of the role. If narrative, especially the Italian one, is present with Manzoni, Fogazzaro, D'Annunzio, Gadda, Vittorini, Pavese, Dessí, La Morante, Calvino...; poetry with Gatto, Jaccottet, Szymborska, Merini, Yves Bichet... how intriguing, in this complex volume conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi, is the attempt to move on almost border lands, making the cinema (Pasolini) and architecture speak, making music interact with literature and opera librettos, intertwining soundtracks with celebrated movies, giving figurative models to photography (through the shots by Letizia Battaglia). Poetic texts by De Signoribus and Vegliante, brought back to the theme on this occasion, keep together a research that questions itself on models and typologies, also showing the existence of a further recent role reversal, an unprecedented one, which wants the son’s pietas to pose next to the mother.

Description: The collection of Lettere di Margherita Guidacci a Mladen Machiedo reinterprets the author's cultural and poetic path in the light of the affinities with the Catholic writers from Florence, the bond with her area of origin, the Mugello, the English studies, the critical work, the constant loyalty to poetry (from the poetic beginnings with La sabbia e l’angelo in 1946, until her last test, Anelli del tempo in 1993). This volume collects the letters that, between 1968 and 1989, Guidacci wrote to Machiedo, a Croatian poet, translator and distinguished scholar of Italian studies. The two were bonded by common cultural interests and a deep friendship. The richly annotated correspondence makes it possible to shed light on the genesis of her works, and allows the recovery of some poetic texts which are difficult to find in Italy.

Description: Through the analysis of the predetermined verbal forms of the Povest 'vremennych let (11th-12th centuries), this book sheds light on the aspectual meanings of verbs with prefix, in order to verify the degree of evolution of the Slavic-oriental aspectual system in the most ancient phase of its attestation. The study on prefixes and the ways in which they interact with the actional characteristics of the starting verbs allows us to identify the consequences of prefixing at the lexical, actional and aspectual level. Terminative verbs with prefix acquire the resultative value ("protoperfective") and are subjected, in part, to secondary suffixation, a phenomenon that will contribute to the grammaticalization of the aspectual category in Russian and other Slavic languages.

Description: The book comprises studies of twenty-four texts of Slavic-ecclesiastical production composed to recount the lives and celebrate the memory of eleven saints of the Russian Orthodox church who lived between the tenth and the seventeenth centuries: Ol'ga of Kiev (†969), Evfrosinija of Polock (†1173), Fevronija of Murom (†1228), Evfrosinija of Suzdal' (†1250), Anna of Kašin (XIII-XIV sec.), Sof'ja of Tver (XIII-XIV sec.), Vassa of Nižnij Novgorod (†1378), Julianija of Vjaz'ma (†1406), Evdokija of Moscow (†1407), Sof'ja of Suzdal' (†1542) and Julianija of Lazar'evo (†1604). Leaving to the historians the task of establishing the reliability of the hagiographic accounts handed down by the sources, the author intends to highlight the cultural influence of the texts in question. The analysis of the stylistic features, of the motifs and the bibliographical-liturgical citations contained in them, brings to light a characteristic profile of the female hagiography, identifying the image of the 'bride of Christ' as the model of sanctity for women. This interpretative key represents an initial approach to issues that have been addressed to date only in a superficial and sporadic manner as regards the East Slavic tradition, although they have begun to receive their due attention in the Latin and Byzantine sphere.

Description: Elegantie lingue latine is the masterpiece of Lorenzo Valla's reflection on language, through which the humanist gave birth to a real re-foundation of Latin. To date we still do not have a modern, scientifically based edition of the text characterising the various editorial phases of the work, on which the author worked for over ten years and which, arbitrarily and by the author’s own will, was in circulation long before its official publication. This research is part of a future complete edition of the text: the first complete edition of a book of the “Elegantie” is presented, limited to the fifth book on the “disputatio verborum”, based on the examination, albeit partial, of the handwritten tradition and on a global reconsideration of the editorial history work.

Description: The systematic examination of the fluctuations in the definition of the terms "neo-avant-garde" and "post-modern" is at the base of this study, which therefore evolves through the comparative analysis of different contexts, with particular reference to the Italian one (Group 63) and to the French one (Nouveau Roman). Thus, an articulated framework of deeply intertwined narrative experiences emerges, making a valid and completely original contribution to the discussion on well-established historical categories within the literary history and critical theory of the second half of the 20th century.

Description: At the height of its development and up to the eighteenth century, the Spanish classical theatre significantly contributed to the formation of the modern European theatre. Theatre texts and theatrical companies were in fact circulating outside the Iberian peninsula and the Spanish experience of theatre triggered literary debates and reflections that played a central role to the cultural history of Europe, from Neoclassicism to the beginnings of Romanticism. It is a complex phenomenon crossing linguistically and culturally diversified territories, and which therefore needs an inter- and multidisciplinary approach. We tried to respond to this need by involving scholars and researchers in the fields of Hispanic, French, Italian, history of entertainment and musicology for the drafting of this volume.

Description: This volume completes the valuable work of cataloguing carried out on the correspondence of Giuseppe Dessí conserved in the 'Alessandro Bonsanti' contemporary archive of Florence. The research, launched by Chiara Andrei in 2003 with the edition of the Corrispondenze familiari (Firenze University Press) and continued in 2009 by Francesca Nencioni with the publication of Lettere di amici e lettori (Firenze University Press), has its third result in this work by Francesca Nencioni, who has indexed the unpublished editorial and professional material, providing it with exhaustive references. The letters make it possible to trace a profile of the writer from his youth through to the 70s, illustrating the historic, political and cultural backdrop against which the events and activities of both his first and second profession developed. This casts light not only his complex professional career, but also on Dessí's collaboration with newspapers and journals, his relations with publishers and his contacts with the world of the mass media. Of particular importance is the appendix of unpublished letters, meticulously edited by Monica Graceffa, comprising the correspondence with two seminal journals of the 1930s and 40s «L'Orto» and «Primato». In the background are the figures of Bottai and Vecchietti and the complex coexistence between the intellectuals of the time and the regime.

Description: What is the night? How can we define it and mark its edges? The gaze of those observing it is more or less mobile; does the night maintain its function as a frame? How does the difficulty to see clearly favour the artistic invention, the wondering on the infinite and death, the questions on the imaginary, the dream, the memory and the oblivion? Anna Dolfi started from questions like these in devising a book of great novelty and suggestion which, between nocturnes and music, wonders how literature, painting, cinema, opera, popular traditions and songs have narrated about blindness and vision, obsession and fear, or said nights were "tender", desperate, sublime, mysterious and mystical, told about nights of 'sickness', of repairing nights, white nights and sleepless nights, when the attempt is to resist while creating in order to challenge the breaking of dawn. The icon of Mozart’s Queen of night, together with that of Schönberg’s Pierrot, has accompanied about fifty Italian and foreign scholars and young researchers in an almost backlit way; they started from the 18th century and from Ossian's songs, continuing along a European night-themed path supported by theorists (Nietzsche, Bachelard, Jankélévitch...) and music (Mozart, Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, Fauré, Debussy, Britten...), and have worked on Novalis, Hölderlin, German Romanticism, Rilke, Celan, Müller, Hugo, Chenier, Baudelaire , Proust, Cocteau, Bonnefoy and many others, declining the Italian nocturnes from the graveyard elegies of Pindemonte to Leopardi, Di Giacomo, D'Annunzio, Onofri, Campana, Saba, Ungaretti, Sbarbaro, Montale, Penna, Pavese, Gatto, Caproni, Luzi, Bigongiari , Fortini, Jacobbi, Ripellino, Pasolini, Giudici, Rosselli, Sanguineti, De Signoribus, la Anedda, Magrelli and such. The work opens with unpublished Portuguese texts by Ruggero Jacobbi, and with verses and translations of De Signoribus and Vegliante. Starting with Donizetti’s night, the volume comes to the night of different Italian singers and songwriters (De Gregori, Dalla and more), pushing the limit of electric nocturnes which, through poetry, reveal the urban glimpses of a tormented society between the end of the century and the beginning of the millennium.

Description: Starting from a vast documentary corpus, the result of in-depth archival research, the volume offers an original perspective on the main forms of entertainment in Pistoia between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, focusing in particular on the theatrical activity of the most important cultural institution in the city, the Accademia dei Risvegliati. The survey also examines realities of secondary importance that contributed to enriching the urban cultural fabric, such as the minor stages, the sacred theatre and private entertainment. A broader overview also allows the readers to frame the scope of festive celebrations and occasions for public entertainment, presented through significant exempla.

They include a biographical profile, enriched by the list of her numerous publications, followed by thirty-two essays written by scholars who shared with her ideals and cultural interests of research and study and writings of her family members who make up the “family album”. The collection, in addition to the variety of issues addressed in a wide chronological span - with essays ranging from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age - mainly focuses on the historiographical and interpretative reflection on documentary, iconographic, literary sources and themes such as Medici diplomacy, the Lorraine age, and gender history, to which Alessandra made important contributions with her studies.

Description: Letture anticanoniche biofiction, dentro e fuori la metafinzione, aims at offering multiple interpretations to biofictions. For the critical analysis of these pieces, identified so far with a 'symptomatic' examination of various fictional texts on a given historical period or person, some possible non-canonical directions have been proposed: a 'horizontal' method, which brings biofiction into the 'fictional galaxy’ of a writing subject (as in the case of Michèle Roberts), and then a ‘vertical’ method, which explores a model-biofiction to deconstruct and then reconstruct the intertwining of the synchronic and diachronic voices of its singular modus operandi. The final part of the volume is dedicated to Mab's Daughters by Judith Chernaik, an extremely interesting case of biofiction 'with possible worlds'. Description: Despite being recognised as an exponent of Slovenian culture, the polymath Johann Weichard Valvasor has to date been undervalued in terms of his direct contribution to the aesthetic and literary consciousness of his homeland. He has been considered above all as a source of material for the works of others, while studies of broader scope underlining his original contribution in the sphere of Carniolan narrative, albeit in German, are still lacking. The present study, based on an attentive reading of the four volumes that compose his principal work, Die Ehre dess Hertzogthums Crain, seeks to identify all the passages that can be considered narrative units, numbering them progressively, cataloguing them by type and providing a brief summary of each. The corpus thus obtained – recorded in the appendix – has been described and appraised. Finally, individual narrative units have been compared with stories or popular songs of analogous content. The work is concluded by an evaluation of Valvasor's narrative gifts, setting the writer in a new light within the cultural and literary history of Slovenia.

Description: Starting from the main theories about the imaginary - from the Freudian category of Unheimliche and the Todorovian category of hésitation up to the most recent contributions - the volume highlights the imaginary elements of instability in Flann O'Brien's narrative. In particular, the author analyses the discontinuities and irreconcilable contradictions of the Irish writer's textual systems, the idiosyncratic and fragmented representation of the characters, the ambiguous coexistence of natural and supernatural, the problematic relationship between signifier and signified. Malapropisms, neologisms, linguistic tics, nonsense and a series of meta-narrative games seem to compromise the search for reliable answers within the Obrienian cosmos in which truth is, in fact, an odd number.

Description: Carlo Marsuppini (1398-1453) is a well known professor at the Studio Fiorentino, Chancellor of the Republic, friend of Cosimo de’ Medici and tutor of his children, translator of Homeric and pseudo-homeric works, author of private and, above all, public letters. His activity as a poet is less known: his writings in vernacular were so far entrusted to a handful of poems published in the collection Carmina illustrium poetarum italorum (1720). This book offers for the first time a rigorous critical edition of the humanist's poetic production, based on the analysis of the vast vast known manuscript tradition, and a broad commentary on the individual poems, of which a translation into Italian is also offered.

Description: “Not forgetting” and “not remembering”. These two contradictory aspects have always furrowed the autobiographical and collective memory of dramatic historical events, such as the Holocaust. This volume, whose origin lies in a couple of conferences held in Pistoia and Florence during the celebrations of the 2014 Day of Remembrance, moves along these two rough paths of remembrance. At its centre, there is Andrea Devoto's work on the memory of political deportation in Tuscany. The invited authors have tried to weave links and to signal new methods of analysis, as well as reflections, accompanied by the awareness that the keystone for the past lies in the present. For this reason, this book is intended to act as a dialogue partner within the social practices of the citizens' memory and civic training.

Description: With the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Dessí’s birth approaching, in 2009, the Committee in charge of the celebrations launched in a widespread dissemination activity of the writer's work in many European countries. And since the translations (the main objective of the project) required a complex knowledge of the author, his style, the dialogue and the difference with the reference culture, it was suggested to study and promote them not only through the reconstruction of the history and typicality of the author’s narrative path, but also through the reconstruction of his scarce reception abroad within the framework, in the case of Dessí, of the presence, outside national borders, of Italian literature in the second half of the 20th century. Through the examination of books, editorial catalogues, magazines, anthologies, and thanks to the commitment of scholars and young collaborators of Italian and foreign universities, it is now France, England, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Finland, Sweden and many more at the centre of the attention, with their reading preferences and aversions, together with Italy, and with the themes, stories, characters of the writer to whom this book is dedicated.

The volume offers a rich itinerary starting from an interview with Vargas Llosa by José Miguel Oviedo (Florence, 2008), and then goes through individual aspects of the work by the two authors. It is then accompanied by photographic records and a DVD with an elaboration of Eielson's visual works, paintings and poems.

Description: The long reign of Ivan Aleksandăr (1331-1371), the penultimate emperor of Bulgaria prior to the Turkish conquest, was marked by a series of successful military campaigns against Serbia and Byzantium and above all by an intensive cultural production, largely fostered and funded by the sovereign himself. The central decades of the fourteenth century were of crucial importance for the later cultural evolution of Bulgaria and the whole of Orthodox Slovenia, despite which to date ample and exhaustive studies on the figure of Ivan Aleksandăr are lacking. There is, in effect, a considerable amount of information at disposal, although it is scattered over the literary sources, the colophons of the manuscripts, the epigraphic documentation and also, obviously, the official deeds promulgated by the Emperor. Through the analysis of this varied documentation, this book attempts to reconstruct the figure of the sovereign, the context in which he lived and worked, his greatness and his mistakes and his parallel activities as a strategist and an illuminated patron of the arts. For the first time, the Italian reader can find collected and translated all the manuscript sources relating to the Bulgarian sovereign. The book is completed by an appendix with the original texts of the Slavonic-ecclesiastical tradition.

Description: This book is the fifth and last volume of the Diari of Giuseppe Dessí, a publication made possible by Franca Linari's transcription combined with the attentive editorship of Francesca Nencioni. The series began with the account of Dessí's early years (1926-1931) and continued with precious details of the period of his development (1931-1948) and the literary production of his maturity (1949-1951; 1952-1962). This time the author's experience and his own notes enable what is almost an 'autobiography of the artistic process' that offers eloquent insight into the creation of Paese d'ombre: not only a reconstruction of the genesis of the novel that won Dessí the Premio Strega, but also the sketching out of events and characters and the gradual definition of the plot. The literary evidence does not stop here, since significant texts of his theatrical production (Eleonora d'Arborea) can also be placed in this last fifteen years, along with narrative (for example Lei era l'acqua). All is set against the backdrop of family, friends (who also suddenly disappear), political passion and a courageous struggle against disease.

Description: Just over 150 epistolary pieces, from the twentieth-century archives of Florence and Rome, are published for the first time thanks to Alberto Baldi’s careful transcription, which does not only allow the reconstruction of the story of a friendship born around the pages of newspapers and consolidated over time to involve the partners of the two writers (Gianna Manzini, Lina Baraldi and Luisa Babini), but also follows Giuseppe Dessí’s presence in one of the most widely read newspapers in Rome. The editorial correspondence, started early by Falqui, the “mover of culture” and through frequency peaks (from 1948 to 1958), soon turned into the advice of a sympathetic reader who, despite the political dissensions for the conservative line of the newspaper "Il Tempo", deserves the credit of having continued a collaboration which would nourish some of the writer’s most significant collections of short stories. The book ends with thirty-eight narrative texts by Dessí, scattered on the «third page» and never collected in a volume before.

Description: Giorgio Caproni is certainly among the most loved Italian poets of the 20th century. Anna Dolfi used this widespread passion to involve not only well-known scholars of Caproni, but also young researchers, in new research activities. This results in a considerably rich book which, together with an overall vision, offers a series of hermeneutical insights on themes which were not as frequently investigated until then (memory, bestiaries and so on), by combining new readings of exemplary texts with unpublished documents, with reflections on language and poetry, on musical, pictorial and mythical suggestions, never forgetting Caproni’s activity for translation, self-commentary and civic commitment. The book is functionally divided into Percorsi e attraversamenti, Letture (e immediati dintorni), Risultanze tra/dalle carte d’archivio, which enhances the diversity of the critical commentaries and the close comparisons, of the surveys and experiments of comment, of explication de texte, and highlights the great technical skill and the extreme lyrical depth of an author who, between cantability and dissonances, arpeggios and apostrophes, cabalettas and cadences, flourishes and delays, vocalizations and little verses, recoveries and leave, talkativeness and aphasia, was able to interpret the contradictory research, the questions, the fears, the faults and the incurable wounds of our time.

Description: Leonardo Manigrasso has made use of the most up-to-date tools made available by stylistic criticism and translation studies to offer a series of intense “debates” and comparisons between the greatest poets-translators born in Italy between the 1910s and the early 1920s. The choice to cross multiple versions of the same source text allows the reader to verify the multiple ways of implicit reading and rewriting during the translation process, establishing distances, documenting unexpected dialogues, exposing the bonds between the translated work and the “creative” work of each author. The interaction between different and remarkable textual features has the goal of reconstructing a fundamental chapter in the history of twentieth century poetry, from the birth of hermetic koinè to a notion of translating as a predominantly empirical and individual process.

Description: The archaeology of the graphic novel does not shed light on the historical origins of the comic book; on the contrary, it tries to discover the conceptual genesis of this narrative form. If the research methodology is archaeological, in fact, the theoretical approach is the same as neuro-narratology, in the light of which four important stages are suggested. These stages define the comic novel as a "natural" literary genre, a mimesis of the process transposing reality into images and constituting the basis of thought. The figure of Rodolphe Töpffer is not excluded from this process. Thanks to his theories and his work, he leads us to hypothesize that the comic book was more "novelistic" at its origin than it is in its current forms: the path to the novel, then, would not be so much of an evolution, but rather a return to the origins.

Description: The death of the self passes through modern culture. However, chooses for himself the role of Psychopomp in obeyance not only to stylistic but also to profoundly ethical reasons. Bassani interrupts his narrative writing to give unity to the Romanzo di Ferrara and to entrust poetry with verses in the form of an epitaph. The testimonial "need” seems to emerge, giving meaning through the Prologue to the Giardino dei Finzi-Contini and to what will come after. It seems that the coherent constructive geometry of an entire work (intertwined since the beginning with refined European readings, figurative and Longhiani memories that Anna Dolfi highlights with wise precision) fully reveals the excess of the hourglass shape, of the conical structures that allow to glimpse distant flakes of light, pushing the real on the perilitant discrimination of the shadow. There, where the existing (objects, characters / people) is offered as a painted image alive only thanks to refraction and indirect projection of the gaze. This book investigates the strategies of Bassani’s memory and his playing on revelation / concealment, while deeply analysing the compositional paths of the texts in their allocative ways (the very privilege, in poetry, of the dialogic and epistolary form). Moreover, the work strongly questions the places of the distance, the introjection of mourning, the relationship between history and truth, between the code of reality and the effect of reality, the convergences between biography and culture (in the names of Caravaggio, Cézanne, De Staël, Morandi, Bacon; Dante, Manzoni , Tommaseo, Hawthorne, James, Dickinson, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Rimbaud ...), offering a new and suggestive interpretation of Bassani's “writing beyond the heart”.

Description: 53 writers invited to speak, as artists, of themselves and their world at the beginning of the new millennium in no more than 2002 keystrokes. A new research criterion with which Fonti di Weltliteratur. Ungheria obtains the real and literary data for a theoretical specification of the state and behaviour of the cultural sphere in the globalized context, in the critical passage constituted – for the political and economic spheres as well – by a transformation of linguistic—national realities. Brief historical notes on the recent and current status of the writer in a Hungary passing from dictatorship to democracy in the end enable light to be thrown on the possible fate of the general figure of the intellectual in the perspective of the realization of a Goethean Weltliteratur. Description: On the one hand le côté de Guermantes and on the other that of chez Swann... Few places like Illiers-Combray offer the tangible measure of a myth that has involved not only readers and writers, but also those who have reflected on the meaning and structures of modern fiction. As the great criticism of the 20th century and the most innovative reflections on the method would not be conceivable without the Recherche. Auerbach, Curtius, Spitzer, Poulet, Jauss, Deleuze, Richard, Genette, Barthes…, as well as Solmi, Debenedetti, Contini, and Macchia in Italy, measured themselves with essays and/or memorable books, while Caproni, Fortini, Ginzsburg, Raboni... tried themselves with translation. In short, the seduction of a work with a very dense intertextuality and variety of registers still resides, not only in the ability to talk about the history and culture of the West, offering the grandiose fresco of a universe in decline, but in the possibility of inserting itself on many levels (including that of meta-literature, non-fiction) as an obligatory point of passage. Thus contributing to create a world parallel to the real one, which is now populated by its doubles: cities, cathedrals, feelings, emotions, words intermittences... From the field of fiction to that, induced, of narratology, no doubt that Proust has changed our life, the perception of the world, and the way of looking at objects, and of reading books and things. The collection that is proposed here, designed and curated by Anna Dolfi, gives a broad and evocative testimony, offering itself as an essential object of study on the traces of the unforgettable, unseizable Marcel.

Description: The murder of Emanuele Notarbartolo, former director of the Banco di Palermo, at the hands of the Sicilian Mafia in 1893 represents a controversial and obscure event in Italian history. There were three trials (Milan, Bologna, Florence), which also involved a Sicilian deputy: Raffaele Palizzolo. Anna Franchi's documentation work takes place in the Assize court of Florence: she attended every hearing, and observed relentlessly both the 'Mafia' phenomenon and the actual theatre of testimonies, confessions, retractions and false tracks characterising the trial in Florence (1903-1904). It was possible to widely integrate Franchi's account after the discovery of the entire folder relating to the process in the State Archives of Florence: about 1500 handwritten pages by the various chancellors dealing with the trial. The trial ended in a general acquittal for principals and executors for lack of evidence. For some, Sicily’s honour was safe, but for many others, the truth was forever covered up.

Description: Within the Kafkaesque bestiary, the dog is undoubtedly the animal that deserves a more careful study: it is the image which the author uses the most, in literary writing but also in the private one, and which occupies a a very large time span, so much so that it becomes a real key figure through which to read Kafka's work from a possible new perspective. The volume aims to demonstrate how the problems that have characterized Kafka's existence are hidden behind the dog's symbology, the reflections around which he has concentrated, throughout his life, his thought and his writing: the woman and the question of marriage, writing itself, religion as a relationship with the divine.

Description: After more than two centuries, this work presents the Russian version of “Dei delitti e delle pene” by Cesare Beccaria, translated by Prince Michail M. Šcerbatov. The edition, conducted on the autographed manuscript, is presented with the original Italian text. In the introductory study, the author traces the fundamental stages of the diffusion of Beccaria’s work in Russia, focusing in particular on the figure of Michail M. Isaev, scholar and translator of the masterpiece by Beccaria, who was the first to re-propose the modern organisation of the “Fifth” edition. The author gives an account of the version proposed by Šcerbatov, investigating its textual genesis and evaluating some aspects of the language used by the translator - first of all the lexicon used for the rendering of philosophical-political and legal terms.

Description: The royal monastery of San Salvatore on Mount Amiata, which, according to tradition, was founded in the 8th century by the will of the Lombard kings near the papal lands, has been the focus of numerous researches in recent decades dedicated not only to some famous codices preserved for centuries in his library, but also to the documentary writings handed down in the Diplomatico, which collects documentation from the mid-eighth century. In this volume, the paleographic and diplomatic interpretation of the writings elaborated by the abbots and the Amiata monks intertwines with the reconstruction of the practices of power management, both in its local dimension and in that of relations with popes and emperors.

Description: This volume offers the first Italian translation of Ljósvetninga saga, composed in the thirteenth century, belonging to the genre of íslendigasögur, the “sagas of the Icelanders”. The volume contextualizes the work in the Medieval Icelandic literature’s framework and offers an overlook at philological issues, such as, for example, the relationship between the existing manuscripts and the genesis of the saga. In addition, the volume also provides a literary analysis of the style, characters and text, based on some of the recent academic studies. The Ljósvetninga saga tells the story of the continuous struggles between two families in Northern Iceland for supremacy over the territory: through the extensive references to legal practices, it remains a precious example of medieval Icelandic culture.

Description: The 2002 Nobel Prize to Imre Kertész is a symptom: Hungary is now weltliterarisch. The historical process – which has seen Hungarian writers working since the 1970s to gain ontological autonomy for their field, to write in a language that is not mendacious, to go beyond the 'modern' of real socialism to a 'postmodern' in which reality is not "described", but "employed", and to anthropic ends – is at a standstill, it is greeted abroad as a common heritage. According to Ungheria 1945-2002. La dimensione letteraria – which concludes a prolonged period of analytical work (see Scrivere postmoderno in Ungheria, 1995, and Scrittori ungheresi allo specchio, 2003) – the Hungarian contribution to the contemporary era lies in its sense for this anthropic function of literature (even though the context now seems to want to thwart this effort).

Description: «Si risponde lavorando». Letters between 1941 and 1992. In 1941, Macrí was a notorious scholar, while Spagnoletti only a debutant poet, but their knowledge of books and magazines brought them to an intense exchange of letters, which would be interrupted in 1956 due to profound disagreements on poetry and on the assessment of Hermeticism. This correspondence, fully transcribed and carefully enriched by Andrea Giusti’s notes, retraces that intellectual relationship in some decisive years of Italian history. With Fascism, war and reconstruction as a background, there is the rise of the ferment underlying cultural collaborations, of Spagnoletti's anthologist activity and of Macrí’s studies on comparative literature and Spanish, which led him to become more sensitive and open towards European culture.

Description: This is the second of the two volumes dedicated to Hermeticism and Florence published by Firenze University Press (the first one entitled Critici, traduttori, maestri, modelli can be purchased separately). Between 1930 and 1945, a group of young people started one of the most vibrant literary seasons of the 20th century in Florence. Many of them recognized themselves in a common narrative marked by a shared imagination, and in the silent dissent from the rhetoric of the regime, which was contrasted by the radicalism of the ethical request and by the deep bond with the Jewish-Christian, romantic and -symbolist roots of the European civilization. One hundred years after the birth of its protagonists (Mario Luzi, Piero Bigongiari, Alessandro Parronchi, Vittorio Bodini), there are still doubts surrounding Hermeticism, its birth and its distinctive features. Searching for how it changed, why it was surrounded by prejudices and aversion (as done by the two essential volumes collecting the documents of a memorable conference in which Anna Dolfi involved scholars from all over the world), leads to draw a portrait of the Hermetic authors, its critics (Bo, Macrí), its friends (the generational companion Vittorio Sereni), admirers and/or detractors, and to outline the boundaries of a complex chapter of Italian history which began with Fascism and recently ended with the fall of ideologies. Together with its 'players', Florence is in a prominent position, a city which, for a few decades, was exposed to the greatness of the past by a new passion, made of culture, creativity and intelligence.

Description: At bottom, youth also – and perhaps primarily – serves this purpose: to make room for the other, that is deconstructing oneself with a view to a reconstruction that is always implied in such a perspective. Moreover, those who do not manage to do so when they are young will have greater difficulty making room for the gift of the other when they are old, unless they wish to identify with that gift, albeit threatening the survival of critical capacity with a belated and excessive display of the self to the other. Description: The unpublished translation of Götterlehre (1791) by K.Ph. Moritz presents the mythopoietic process of the Ancients by means of the tale of the origins of the numinous and of its ekfrastic structuring into the great mythical representations of the Greek-Roman world. In the background of Moritz’s visit to Italy (1786-1788) and of his fruitful friendship with Goethe, the introductory essay illustrates the theoretical premises of the specific aesthetic itinerary covered by a work of classical mythology conceveid as Dichtung and codified by a very original and universal Sprache der Phantasie, emblematic figural language that refers to the iconic character of the text with the rich repertoire of lithographies based on drawings by Carstens, inspired by ancient cameos and gems of Lippert’s Dactyliotheca and the Stosch collection.

Description: The volume presents a critical reading of the Moscow notebooks by Osip Mandel'štam. The poems are analysed one by one in chronological order, verse by verse, and are accompanied by an interlinear translation. Special attention is paid to their arrangement in poryvy, “impulses” embracing and connecting several compositions, and to their connection with the Mandel'štamian contemporary prose. The aim is to offer on the one hand a support for the reading of the verses, on the other an interpretative glimpse of the work of the late Mandel'štam as a whole.

Description: The present study aims to examine the presence of allegory in literary works in prose, limiting the attention to a specific area of the second half of the twentieth century called ‘letteratura di ricerca’. After discussing the most important theories about ‘modern allegory’, and particularly the debate that has developed in the Italian literary critic around the ‘80s, a series of textual analysis are gathered, focusing on several authors, such as Manganelli, Morselli, Volponi, Malerba, Arbasino, Sanguineti, Di Marco. As we can see from the exam of these works, narrative allegories have an impact both on the formal and the content-related level: the allegorical impulse can affect the structure of a novel, its formal aspects and its diegesis, as well as its relations with literary genres.

Description: A long eighteenth century - on the footsteps of the erudite tradition and of the Muratori’s publishing method - and a very short nineteenth century, enclosed between the first post-unification decade and the threshold of the Great War, when the advent of a new and professionalised generation of scholars (Bonelli, Vittani, Torelli, Manaresi) would also impose a radical change in Lombardy in the field of palaeographic-diplomatic research. These are the coordinates (of a conceptual rather than a chronological nature) of the book, which for the first time analyses a significant period of medieval history under a historiographic perspective and retraces the careers, projects, the initiatives of the individuals and institutions that have animated that epoch. The editors and the editions of medieval documents coming from Lombardy are at the heart of the publication, although wider perspectives and many protagonists whose fame goes beyond the borders of regional culture revolve around them. The process of defining a modern diplomatic philology in the editions of Lombard sources is followed, marking its salient stages and turning points. However, in the background stand out the broader (as well as stronger and ideologically connoted) themes of Medieval studies before and after the Unification of Italy. These are the issue of the Longobards, the myth of the Commune civilisation in the Risorgimento culture, the identity of the Visconti-Sforza state. Analysing the editors and the editions of medieval documents in Lombardy between the nineteenth and twentieth century means shedding a significant light on the very dynamics of the organisation of regional historical research. Such analysis moves within a lively debate offering scientific and cultural implications between the hegemonic Milanese centre and the sometimes riotous municipalisms of the many suburbs.

Description: This volume presents the critical edition of Cammino di Dante, the first topo-chronographic summary of Dante's Comedy, written by the Florentine notary, ser Piero Bonaccorsi (1410-1477), for the friar of Santa Croce, Romolo de' Medici. The edition of the text is opened by a bio-bibliographical introduction on the author, that hightlights some new aspects of his notarial career, his literary activity and his relationship with notable figures of his age. The text then presents the seven manuscripts that handed down the Cammino, including four original manuscripts by Bonaccorsi, and analyses their textual relations. The edition offers a critical text based on the codex Riccardiano 1122, the last complete autograph edition, whose unreleased appendix is also published.

Description: Based loosely on Primo Levi's Il Sistema Periodico, the play is set in a Fahrenheit 451 scenario. In this world without either books or memory, a man of the street arrives with a bundle of not easily decipherable papers: with the help of the narrative voice, of his friends – Science, Technology and Nature – and of two actors at length off-stage, Primo and his friend Alberto, the man succeeds in reconstructing the episode of the story Cerio. Through memory he thus reconstructs the lost identity, that is our history. Science, Technology and Nature allow the man without memory to master scientific knowledge and free himself from his state. The drama finds its catharsis in a poignant passage, inspired by the story Carbonio, which lyrically sets up a temporal link between an atom of carbon from the smoke of a crematorium and the same dwelling within the body of each one of us: a poetic parabola of a science immersed in the life and history of man.

Description: The present book addresses a wide range of problems concerning the history of Eastern Slavic culture in its interaction with cultural models of Western Europe. This collective work is the final result of the French-Italian conference “Fratture e integrazioni tra Russia, mondo slavo orientale e Occidente. Storia e civiltà letteraria dal Medioevo all’epoca contemporanea” (University of Florence, April 16-17, 2015): the complexity of cultural relations between Russia, the Slavic East and the European West is analysed by enhancing the variety of points of view and by using different methodological approaches and perspectives provided by different fields of study. Here, new materials and new analytical methods are presented, useful for studying the complex interactions between the Western cultural tradition and the Eastern Slavic one from the Middle Ages to the present day. The “fractures” and “integrations” are identified through critical reading or rereading of texts, works and authors who have taken part in the construction and development of cultural relations between the different European areas.

Description: Cyril Loukaris (1570-1638), Orthodox patriarch of Alexandria and later of Constantinople, is a fascinating and controversial figure. In addition to being a religious authority, the patriarch proved to be a first-rate politician and diplomat, capable of weaving a vast network of relationships. An acute mediator between cultures, he was a prominent intellectual of his time. The volume, the first of its kind in Italy, collects contributions from scholars of different disciplines, which bring out the multiplicity of cultural and geopolitical plans and areas in which the “Protestant” patriarch Loukaris carried out his activity. For the variety of approaches and areas examined, the essays reflect the many-sided nature of this figure, of which an unpublished sermon and related documents from the Moscow State Archives are published.

Description: Recent work on second language acquisition within the generative framework has pointed out interfaces (syntax-discourse, syntax-semantics, etc.) as a residual domain of vulnerability in L2. Rather than in core syntax, it is at the interface level that the divergence between native and non-native grammars has been shown to be more prominent. In this book the investigation of answering strategies and the focalization of new information subjects, which require access to the syntax-discourse interface, will be pursued. Data is collected through an oral elicitation task on Finnish and Italian, a rather unexplored language pair, in various stages of language development: advanced and intermediate L2 acquisition, L1 under L2 attrition, early bilingualism, child monolingual L1 development.

Description: Le norme stabilite e infrante. Saggi italo-tedeschi in prospettiva linguistica, letteraria e interculturale collects linguistic and literary essays which analyse the writing styles of authors like Vasari and Goethe, forms of modern communication, and theoretical and normative aspects of language. Other essays focus on the work of Italian authors from the 20th century (Pirandello and Atzeni), investigating the dimension of intertextuality and polyphony of languages. The relationship between concrete poetry and visual poetry is also analysed, and so is the expressive technique of language in the cinema. This volume ends with an analysis of the cultural policies of both countries, highlighting their similarities and differences.

Description: Kiev has always revealed a surprising capacity for assimilation, giving rise over time to multi-ethnic, multi-faith and multi-cultural contexts of various types. Thinking of the "Kiev text" leads inevitably to consideration of the other emblematic text of the Ukrainian identity, the no less composite reality of Lviv. This publication contains the contributions presented at a Conference (Milan, February 2007) addressed to the "cultural text" of Kiev and Lviv. The authors are specialists with different cultural profiles, and the book is of a deliberately inter-disciplinary character. In view of the richness and variety of the information it is offered, within the Italian and international context, as a useful source even for the non-specialist public, and is one of a very small number of books dedicated to Ukraine available in Italian. Clearly, the arguments addressed represent only a tiny part of the vast spectrum of issues and questions inherent to the specificity and plurality of Kiev and Lviv. The hope is that the seed sewn here will grow into further fruitful interest.

Description: The author addresses the issue of the conquest of Caucasus at the hand of the Tsarist army, investigating the attitude held towards this event by three of the major authors of nineteenth-century Russian literature: Aleksandr Puškin (1799-1837), Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841) and Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), expressed through some of their most famous works. As for Puškin, the analysis touches the three main Southern Poems, as well as the account of his trip to Arzrum in 1829 on the Russian-Turkish war theatre, and the drama Boris Godunov, dedicated above all to the matter of power, in which however the will to create an empire imposes itself. The analysis of Lermontov’s works, in addition to the poem The novice, set in Georgia, is also about the short story Bela, which is part of the 'novel' A hero of our time. The short story was chosen for its clear display of the Russian officers’ attitude of contempt towards the indigenous Caucasians. The analysis of Tolstoy starts with the young author’s position in the 1850s, when he was a voluntary fighter in the Caucasus, as shown in the story The raid. Then, the analysis moves to the position of the 'mature' Tolstoy, a pacifist and anti-militarist, who expresses his ideas in the long story Hadji Murat.

Description: This book addresses a subject of great interest for German culture, and that of Europe in general: the emergence and development in Germany, indicatively between 1890 and 1930, of an eclectic pan-artistic movement aimed at renewal of the art of printing and the circulation of artistic books. The author takes his cue from an analysis of the decline in the quality of the book as object, degraded to a serial product and deprived of its artistic specificity by the modern book industry, in order to offer a complete overview of the different expressions of the Buchkunstbewegung. Prominent figures of illustrators and publishers are the subject of in-depth study, as are the printing works and the journals that had the greatest cultural influence at the time, from the original viewpoint of their bibliophilic production.

Description: The main purpose of this work is to re-examine the literature published in the USSR during the Brežnevian era (1964-'84). Although it was considered insignificant and uninteresting, quickly forgotten after its conclusion, Brežnevian era was a period of silent change of society. These changes reflected on a substantial part of the official literature that while remaining within the ideological and politically acceptable, did not exempt from confronting the most uncomfortable issues of the time. In this ‘free’ zone, authors of the calibre of Čingiz Ajtmatov, Viktor Astaf’ev, Valentin Rasputin, Vasilij Šukšin and Jurij Trifonov succeed in introducing themselves. Their different artistic personalities and ideological positions about the socialist realism show the slow process of pluralization of the Soviet culture.
