Description: During the 17th century antiquities of Campania received international attention thanks to the cultural politics of the Bourbon monarchy. The archaeological discoveries were considered part of the political and military success of the King of Naples. After the reunification of Italy, Naples lost its central role as heart of the antiquities collecting and trade as consequence of the marginalization of Naples as economic and political capital of a Kingdom. This process influenced the sectors archaeology, collecting and antiquity market that traditionally reflected the self-representation of the cultural and political élite. This book focuses on the social history of Neapolitan archaeology, that between the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century was strictly connected with the antiquarian market. The research analyses cultural, socio-political and institutional transformations that determinated the promulgation of a specific legislation that limited the exportation of antiquities with the aim to protect the national interest on Cultural Heritage.

Description: The dominant vision in our societies seems to conceive of life as a capital with which each individual would be endowed, as a collection of credits and skills that must be enhanced to produce performances characterized by ever greater speed, impact, and efficiency. Everything seems designed to increase a life of which we would be the masters, whose progress or regression can be evaluated according to quantitative criteria, in order to compare different lives and obtain the best possible selection. Thus, techniques are spreading everywhere that aim to enhance life, to make it more productive, while companies and institutions profit from every aspect of it. A frenzy that turns into its opposite, into a paradoxical sacrifice of life, into the loss of democratic control, of planning that looks to the future – as the pandemic and the war in Ukraine show us, revealing the limits of enhancement practices, the fragility of life, the inextricable connection between our lives, their belonging to a larger life of the species. If these events are the result of the ways in which life has been instituted, then, in these times when all of humanity is faced with health, war, and ecological challenges, the ‘phenomenon life’ should perhaps be rethought at its root, as an encounter rather than a competition, as recognition, as a communication.

Description: This study examines young Simmel’s reflections on social-historical knowledge and philosophy of history. I compare these reflections to three models of post-Hegelian thought: Moritz Lazarus and Heymann Steinthal’s Völkerpsychologie, Wilhelm Dilthey’s Historismus, and Wilhelm Windelband’s Neo-Kantianism. From different perspectives, these three authors tried to justify a scientific approach to cultural and social phenomena, considering the speculative philosophy of history obsolete because it was overtaken by the development of particular sciences since the early 19th century. Even if the old speculative philosophy of history had collapsed, the rejection of metaphysics’ legacy proved to be a challenging task. This legacy reappears in the post-Hegelian models of thought, showing how the philosophy of history (which seemed to be dead) still expresses the human need for meaning. A human need that urges to find expression. Simmel’s work, “The Problems of Philosophy of History” (1892), examines the persistence of the philosophy of history and its changing function. Philosophy of history no longer represents the story of a guaranteed salvation but expresses philosophically the problems that are constantly renewed by the people who live history.

Description: The book collects the results of the Laboratory of Final Synthesis of the Master Degree course in Architectural Design MAPA at DiARC Department of Architecture, structured around the co-participation of two disciplines, architectural design, taught in the course by Professor Renato Capozzi, and executive design, by Professor Erminia Attaianese. The Laboratory has taken on a call for competition articulated in two phases with the subject of the design of a building with a strong public vocation, with the aim of subjecting the students to a design experimentation based on the simulation of a real participation in a design competition. The roofed market of San Giovanni di Dio in the Monteverde district in Rome, has been the theme of the year for the students, producing ten answers, in which the students have respected both the qualitative and quantitative indications and the number of elaborated required, keeping together the complexity of the architectural project and its executive and constructive aspects. The book is completed by contributions by Carmelo Baglivo, Lorenzo Netti, Valerio Palmieri and Efisio Pitzalis, followed by conclusions by Francesco Costanzo and Federica Visconti

Description: With this rich anthology of sources, most of which are made available here for the first time, Michele Mancino and Giovanni Romeo add another element to the research project that began with their recent book (Clero criminale. The two parts document from a range of perspectives the way in which the Tridentine project of combating the common crimes of the clergy was undone before the end of the sixteenth century. Instead, the Roman curia was mainly concerned with enforcing the right of delinquent priests to be judged only by ecclesiastical tribunals, a strategy intended to defend the honor of the clergy that was followed persistently over the long term. The material presented here describes a previously unknown historical precedent for the recent revelations about the treatment of pedophile priests.

Description: The book collects the outcomes of the three Architectural Design Studios of the second year of the Bachelor degree course in Science of Architecture of the DiARC_ Department of Architecture of the University of Naples “Federico II” held during the academic year 2020/21. The three ateliers, sharing the same theme and place, worked on Naples and, in particular, within one of those parts – the Pignasecca – that make up its compact body, confronting the existing and taking it as a reference and measure for the contemporary project. On the basis of these premises, the publication is not limited to an orderly account of a teaching experience, but aims to be a testimony of convinced adhesion to the initiative of coordination of all the Studios of SSD ICAR/14-Architectural and Urban Composition at DiARC: to respond to the need to expand opportunities for comparison and dialogue and to reaffirm the centrality of the project in architectural studies

Description: Is it the man who dispose of the technique or is the technique that the man has at his disposal? This is probably the fundamental question around which the reflection of this volume rolls around. A reflection that, in consideration of the relationship between contemporary man and technology, also proceeds in the direction of an elaborative proposal that promises the possibility of converting the freedom of the individual into responsibility. Only this step will allow, in fact, to transform the individual’s expansion into ethical expansion and to give life to a new humanism, the humanism of the other man, capable of transforming the individual from fomenter of war into one of peace; from dissipator into authentic builder of the future.

Description: During an era in which the main form of recognition would seem to be entrusted to the screen, Jean Baudrillard’s reflections offer extremely useful interpretative tools to understand the neo-existence of the screened individual. According to the French philosopher, the simulation, as a codification of entities in a data flow, can be interpreted as a informatic potlatch, a ritual shortcircuit, fueled by the consumption of bits as the ultimate guarantee of persistence. This practice would envelop the entire society in a claustrophobic suspension, smoothing out any possibility of contact, bringing out the user as a transmission channel of an empty signifier: the digital code. The surface of the screen, exposing a sort of ontological indigestion between the individual and his digital projection, would find its own matrix in the intersection between the metaphysical problem and the political question through the figure of the hostage. The screen-society, from the shining call to entertainment, would turn upside down in a saving form of disappearance, reconfiguring a world in which the antiquated shadows of reality would have sharpened into ghosts that had become more real than reality, hyperreal. Precisely starting from this fissure, from this mingling of virtuality and reality, that seems to emerge the urgency of a thought that, as Baudrillard wanted, can transmit the resistance of an elusive singularity.

Description: Here are collected five essays where themes concerning ethics, aesthetics and philosophy of religion are examined, which have their ideal reference in the problem of the edification of the human, of which Kant understood the idea in dynamic terms, as suggested by the concept of 'destination' as well as the program of a 'reform of the way of thinking'. Producing this change was a non-secondary aim of a philosophy that, in the spirit of modern reflexivity, had the pride of calling itself "critical", firm in the intention of reconciling the different needs of reason.
