Die Texte verhandeln gesellschafts- und kulturpolitischen Kontexte der Zeit und zeigen ein Ringen um Ethik und Moral – vor allem in Hinblick auf die Institution ‚Ehe‘. Während erste Ansätze zu einer Aufbereitung der Entstehungsgeschichte bereits vorliegen (Höfflin-Grether 2021), veranschaulicht die vorliegende Ausgabe die Komplexität der Entstehung in vollem Umfang; faksimiliert die Handschriften, die sich großteils im Schnitzler-Nachlass an der Cambridge University Library befinden, versieht sie mit einer Umschrift und ediert die Typoskripte. Der Band zeichnet zudem die Druckgeschichte nach und bietet Lesetexte der Novelle und des Dramas nach dem Erstdruck bzw. der Erstausgabe. Versehen werden die Texte mit Kommentaren zu kulturhistorischen Kontexten, Austriazismen und veralteten, zum Teil fremdsprachlichen Ausdrücken.     Description: Diese literaturgeschichtliche Arbeit führt erstmals auf breiter Quellenbasis den empirischen Nachweis, dass Leser/-innen beim außerwissenschaftlichen Umgang mit Literatur in Geschichte und Gegenwart Applikationen vornehmen. Es wird gezeigt, welche Formen eine solche Applikation annehmen kann, und dass es sich um eine relevante Praktik handelt. Unter ‚Applikation‘ ist eine Tätigkeit im Rahmen des Rezeptionsprozesses zu verstehen, bei welcher Leser/-innen das Gelesene auf ihre persönlichen oder lebensweltlichen Erfahrungen, Überzeugungen und Einstellungen beziehen. Das Ergebnis dieser Bezugnahme, welches ebenfalls ‚Applikation‘ heißt, kann sein, dass sie neue Überzeugungen und Einstellungen bilden, bestehende verändern oder verwerfen. Um Existenz, Beschaffenheit und Relevanz des Phänomens zu belegen, wurde eine Fülle an Rezeptionsdokumenten ausgewertet. Sie geben Auskunft über die Erstrezeption von neun Romanen aus vier Jahrhunderten, die das literarische Korpus der Arbeit bilden, darunter Goethes Werther, Manns Buddenbrooks und Schlinks Der Vorleser. Die Arbeit beleuchtet eine wichtige, in der bisherigen rezeptionsgeschichtlichen Forschung nicht hinreichend beachtete Praktik des außerwissenschaftlichen Umgangs mit Literatur.

Die vorliegende Studie geht den Zusammenhängen zwischen Engelsfigur und Moderne-Diskurs entlang eines Spannungsbogens nach, der von Reflexionen eines metaphysischen Exils Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts über die Zuspitzung existentieller Bedrohung im Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zum Undarstellbarkeitstopos des Holocaust verläuft. Dabei wird deutlich, dass der Engel auf vielfache Weise als Verursacher und gleichzeitig als zukunftsgerichteter Überwinder moderner Formen des Exils auftritt – als Figur, die geschichtsphilosophische Brüche herbeiführt und individualbiographische Traumata sichtbar macht; die die moderne Deformation des Menschen illustriert und wahlweise zu heilen oder voranzutreiben versucht; und die schließlich neue politische Ordnungen entwirft und sie als ästhetische Metalepse bereits in der Exilgegenwart veranschaulicht.

    Description: This volume is devoted to literature and the arts that were created in Paris from 1917–1962. The starting point is Vilém Flusser's conviction that migration experience and cultural innovation should be closely linked. France became the world's second most important immigration country after the United States in the interwar period. Authors came to the French metropolis from Eastern Europe, after the strengthening of the fascists from Italy, after 1933 from Germany, after the Spanish Civil War and after the consolidation of the Estado Novo in Portugal. Artists from Latin America were also present in Paris, and the Congrès international des écrivains pour la défense de la culture in June 1935 made the city the centre of intellectual resistance to fascism. But writers from all over the world also migrated to France after the Second World War. In addition to almost all languages ​​of Romania, the articles also take into account the Arabic, Hebrew, German, Russian and Polish literature. This comparative approach can reveal unusual perspectives, relationships and fault lines.

    Description: This volume presents two lesser-known plays from Horváth’s middle creative period – the tragicomedy Skyward, which he titled a “fairy tale,” and the comedy Head On. The volume reconstructs the plays’ writing process. Especially in the case of Head On, it becomes clear how intensely Horváth worked on polishing the text, which survives in three different final versions.
