    Description: At the end of the 1970s, a new genre cycle was formed in US cinema. Starting with space opera in cinema, for which George Lucas' Star Wars is paradigmatic, fantasy established itself for the first time as an independent cinematic genre in distinction from fairy tales and fantastic fiction. The enthusiasm for pen & paper role-playing games and the continuing J. R. R. Tolkien craze culminated in the following years in a series of films that absorbed, pushed and further developed the diversity of modern film technology and production: the spectrum of films ranged from live-action films (Conan the Barbarian) to puppet animation (The Dark Crystal) to animated films (The Last Unicorn), in which George Lucas as well as Jim Henson and the production companies behind them at the time played leading roles. Contemporary critics had written these films off as conservative, sometimes even reactionary genre plays. In contrast, this essay unfolds a (historical) poetics of the US fantasy film. With its film-analytical case studies, the volume shows how the films of the years 1977 to 1987 are embedded in a specific film culture and how the genre cycle as part of the Hollywood system prepared and significantly influenced the triumph of blockbuster cinema in the 1990s.

But what is it when we talk about Macedonia? The media representation of the region often remains diffuse and is strongly influenced by stereotypes.     Description: Die anhaltende Präsenz von Engeln in der Moderne wurde oft auf ein gesteigertes Trostbedürfnis zurückgeführt. Die Engelsfigur ist aber nicht bloß statisches Überbleibsel einer verlorenen Glaubensgewissheit. Vielmehr steht sie in einer produktiven Beziehung zu zentralen geschichtsphilosophischen, politischen und medienästhetischen Fragen der Zeit. Die vorliegende Studie geht den Zusammenhängen zwischen Engelsfigur und Moderne-Diskurs entlang eines Spannungsbogens nach, der von Reflexionen eines metaphysischen Exils Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts über die Zuspitzung existentieller Bedrohung im Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zum Undarstellbarkeitstopos des Holocaust verläuft. Dabei wird deutlich, dass der Engel auf vielfache Weise als Verursacher und gleichzeitig als zukunftsgerichteter Überwinder moderner Formen des Exils auftritt – als Figur, die geschichtsphilosophische Brüche herbeiführt und individualbiographische Traumata sichtbar macht; die die moderne Deformation des Menschen illustriert und wahlweise zu heilen oder voranzutreiben versucht; und die schließlich neue politische Ordnungen entwirft und sie als ästhetische Metalepse bereits in der Exilgegenwart veranschaulicht.

The goal was, internally, to integrate the entire population, and externally, to make the country distinguishable from the »West« ─ paradoxically, in a spirit of European Romanticism. Takemitsu Morikawa investigates these remarkable developments and retraces the rise and canonization of the alleged self-image of modern Japan.
    Description: Seit der Öffnung des Landes in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bewegte sich Japan rasant auf dem Weg zur industrialisierten Weltmacht. Das dort seit den 1890er Jahren durch Mori Ogai aus Europa ‘eingeführte’ romantische Syndrom jedoch verzauberte insbesondere die jungen Intellektuellen und trieb sie zur Suche nach der japanischen kulturellen Identität an. Ziel war es, nach innen die gesamte Bevölkerung zu integrieren und nach außen das Land vom »Westen« unterscheidbar zu machen ─ und zwar paradoxerweise im Geist der europäischen Romantik.     Description: In the years 1738/39, Gottsched was mostly concerned with two events: his departure from the “Deutsche Gesellschaft” which he had been heading and the resulting developments, and the continuation of his disputes on the philosophy of Christian Wolff which he had been conducting with the Lutheran-Orthodox theologians. Through the support of the influential Imperial Count Ernst von Manteuffel, Gottsched now acquired strong political backing. This is documented by 52 of the total of 204 letters published in this volume, a correspondence in which Mrs Gottsched also soon became involved. The letters of other correspondents also deal with Wolff’s rationalist philosophy, as well as other very varied themes such as theater, teaching of the German language in schools, the problems of Leipzig students, newspaper polemics, planned translation projects and the competing editions of the writings of Martin Opitz, the “father of German poetry”, that were undertaken in Leipzig and Zurich.

    Description: The furious text has not been an object of systematic analysis until now. In this volume, this analysis is based on an interdisciplinary definition of the emotion of fury itself. Text analyses thus provide insights that go beyond previous findings from the fields of poetics, rhetoric, linguistics, and psychology. Although this study takes up the theory of satire, it develops a new approach to categorize and analyze aggressive writing.

    Description: Illustrierte Zeitschriften entwickeln sich ab der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu den ersten Massenmedien der Moderne. Willi Wolfgang Barthold erforscht die Wechselwirkung der Literatur des Realismus mit diesem neuen medialen Kommunikationssystem und verbindet dabei Ansätze der Journalliteraturforschung und der Visual Culture Studies. Mit Hilfe einer Untersuchung sowohl kanonisierter als auch bisher kaum berücksichtigter Texte (von Wilhelm Raabe, Theodor Fontane, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach und Balduin Möllhausen) zeigt er, wie sich der Realismus im intermedialen Spannungsfeld seiner Zeit positioniert und durch ein permanentes Hinterfragen der eigenen Wirklichkeitskonstruktionen ein Reflexionswissen produziert, das zur kritischen Beobachtung der entstehenden Massenmedien beiträgt.

In diesem Verständnis macht Aurel Sieber den Essay als metaästhetische Erkenntnisweise greifbar, ohne ihm dafür eine Form aufzwingen zu müssen. Er etabliert eine praxeologische Perspektive, die den Blick nicht nur auf die künstlerischen Erzeugnisse, sondern auf jegliche Aspekte der Produktion richtet. Am Beispiel von Harun Farocki vollzieht er so über vier Jahrzehnte hinweg die Genese einer essayistischen Praxis als genuine Form der Erkenntnis nach.

    Description: This study investigates the function of the recourse to the messianic tradition of Judaism among German-Jewish intellectuals between 1900 and 1933 (Benjamin, Bloch, Broch, Buber, Landauer, Rosenzweig, Scholem). Messianic figures of thought play an important role in the Jewish discourse of identity. Moreover, they are used productively in the creation of general theories in the realm of cultural studies (philosophy of language and history, theological-political thinking). The messianic figures of speech include not only figures of thought but also rhetorical figures of speech or tropes that reflect various constellations of sacrality and secularity in the modern era.

André Steiner fragt in diesem Kontext, wie sich Komplexität im literarischen Text manifestiert und welche Verfahren der Analyse vonseiten der Literaturwissenschaft in Anschlag gebracht werden können. Dabei geht er von einem immer noch bestehenden Forschungsdefizit aus und fragt nach möglichen Gründen dafür. Denn überraschenderweise sind die methodischen Werkzeuge bereits weitgehend vorhanden. Es kommt nur darauf an, sie mit Einsichten aus der Komplexitätsforschung zu rekombinieren.
