To fill the gap, this bookreconstructs the most important factors in childhood in Byzantium from the 6th through the 11th century. The main sources are the lives of the saints, which are of central importance for the analysis of the social history and daily life of the population. They also provide an insight into family, social and economic structures, as well as patterns of behaviour. This material is supplemented by legal, medical, theological and other sources.

This process used to be regarded by scholars aspart of the dissolution of Roman order, but in current discussions it is nowexamined more critically. Eine systematische Durchsicht nicht nur der einschlägigen archivalischen Überlieferung - Zahlungsanweisungen, Quittungen, Rechnungsbücher, aber auch Inventare - zeigt, dass der festliche Austausch dieser Geschenke bei Hof zum neuen Jahr nicht nur quantitativ ein einzigartiges Phänomen des ausgehenden 14. und des beginnenden 15. Jahrhunderts im französisch-burgundischen Raum war, sondern auch in kunst-, kultur- und v.a. sozialgeschichtlicher Hinsicht wesentliche Einblicke in die Ausgestaltung der Beziehungsnetze der zeitgenössischen höfischen Gesellschaft Frankreichs während der Regierungszeit Karls VI. ermöglicht. Die Beobachtung des höfischen Geschenkverkehrs gestattet zudem einen Blick hinter die Kulissen. Der Gabentausch offenbart nämlich, dass es nachweislich Personen gab, die, selbst nicht fürstlichen Ranges, der Ehre für Wert befunden worden sind, höfisch beschenkt zu werden, und damit in intensiven Nahverhältnissen zu den jeweiligen Fürsten standen: Favoriten, Protegierte und Günstlinge, Vertraute und Freunde. Ein Ergebnis der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist auch, diese Personen zu erkennen und zu benennen und damit einen weiteren Baustein für die Erforschung von Beziehungen zwischen Gönnern und Begünstigten im späten Mittelalter zu liefern.

Beschreibung: The land walls of Constantinople are one of the largest and most important defensive fortifications from Late Antiquity. The subject of this book are the history and topography of the Theodosian Land Walls and the Walls of Blachernae (the so-called walls of the XIVth region, the Komnenian Walls, the section between the Komnenian Walls and the Golden Horn). The central topics are the conception and planning of the Theodosian Walls, the chronology of the Walls of Blachernae, the date of the Golden Gate and the actual gateway of the outer gate, an investigation into the Byzantine names for the gates north of the re-discovered Romanos Gate, the identification of the Mermerkule castle and other localities, as well as an analysis and documentation of the structure itself.

Introductory essays are devoted to the development of war damage recording and discuss the significance of map documents for reconstruction and heritage processes.

Alongside the most important workshop belonging to the Drach family, the brothers Johann and Conrad Hist printed there, as did two anonymous printing firms. This volume builds on their biographies to examine and compare their respective incunabulum production in terms of its content, design, use of paper, and dissemination.

Dessen Realität ist jedoch immer wieder in Zweifel gezogen worden - nicht zuletzt durch die Texte selbst. Obwohl sie sich normierend geben, reden sie gelegentlich der Pluralität, den Lokaltraditionen das Wort. Die seit dem Mittelalter reichlicher fließenden inschriftlichen Quellen zeigen dann auch regional unterschiedliche Systeme - kaum verwunderlich angesichts der Ausdehnung und kulturellen Vielfalt des Subkontinents. Dazu kommen Partikularrechte einzelner religiöser Gruppen, únd die Akkulturation durch den sich ausbreitenden Hinduismus in mannigfachen Mischformen. All das dokumentiert den mühseligen Prozeß der Auseinandersetzung zwischen Lokalbrauch und der Begrifflichkeit der Orthodoxie.

Beschreibung: The book focuses on the “Tractatus contra Graecos” (1252) by an anonymous Dominican from the convent of Constantinople, a theological dossier outstanding with regard to its various interaction with contemporary Latin-Greek discourses. Polemical theology is, to a certain extent, always making of: Notions of the other church are conveyed, which - if they did not meet their own expectations of the question of church unity - turned from the partner to the enemy. The analysis of these notions shows that under an often polemical text surface there is sometimes a much more original theology than one would expect this genre of text to be, and this theology is the central leitmotif of this book, drawing out and working into the sketch of medieval ecclesiology.

Beschreibung: Literary description emerges as one of the central elements of late antique poetry. It serves a dual role in that it interacts both to represent multisensory perceptions and to break through the illusion it creates through metapoetic discourse. This self-referentiality makes the late antique descriptive a space of intense literary communication between poet and readership in different genres and contexts. This study systematically examines the textual strategies of description in selected works by the poets Claudian, Prudence and Ausonius, who were active between the late 4th and early 5th centuries. The texts are analysed with regard to ancient conceptualisations of descriptio and with the help of modern models of literary and cultural studies. The texts show both a continuation and an intensification of already existing traditions, which are expressed in a productive use of intertexts, a complex mediality and a textual world that plays with distance and proximity.

It presents the basilicas of the 7th to 15th centuries, addressing questions of typology, appointments, function, and the relationship to longitudinal and central constructions. Im Dauerkonflikt mit seinen Lehnsherren, König Ludwig XI. von Frankreich und Kaiser Friedrich III., strebte Karl nach eigenständiger Herrschaft über den reichen burgundischen Länderkomplex und darüber hinaus nach einer Königskrone oder gar dem römischen Kaisertum. Im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehen die Beziehungen Burgunds zum Kaiser und den deutschen Fürsten vor allem im Westen des Reiches. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt der diplomatischen Praxis und dem Zeremoniell. Im Bewusstsein der Überlegenheit französisch-burgundischer Hofkultur, Administration und militärischer Technik versäumte es Karl der Kühne, sich in dem Maß Verbündete im Reich zu schaffen, wie er sie zur Verwirklichung seiner hochfliegenden Pläne benötigt hätte. Nachlässigkeit im diplomatischen Umgang trug daher mindestens ebenso zu seinem Scheitern bei wie Unzulänglichkeiten in der Kriegführung.

Vor diesem Hintergrund wird ein historischer "Zufall" aus der frühmittelalterlichen Geschichte in den Blick genommen: Mitte des 8. Jahrhunderts wechselten sowohl im Frankenreich als auch im islamischen Kalifat die Herrscherdynastien, Merowinger und Umayyaden wurden nahezu zeitgleich durch Karolinger bzw. Abbasiden ersetzt. Welche Argumente wurden dabei von den Usurpatoren benutzt, welche Strategien verfolgt, um den Untertanen, namentlich den Angehörigen der Eliten, die Rechtmäßigkeit der eigenen Machtausübung schlüssig plausibel zu machen? Während die Abbasiden behaupteten, als Verwandte des verstorbenen Propheten Mohammed über ein spezielles, erbliches Charisma zu verfügen, das ihnen den Zugang zu einem unvergleichlichen, islamisch begründeten Herrschaftswissen eröffne, konstruierten die Karolinger mit Hilfe der Kirche, namentlich des römischen Papsttums, ein besonderes Amtscharisma, mit dessen Hilfe sie sich als Exponenten eines verchristlichten Herrschertums und als geistliche Verwandte des Nachfolgers des heiligen Petrus inszenierten. Trotz aller Unterschiede versuchten beide Dynastien, sich als Exponenten eines sakral konnotierten Herrschertums zu etablieren. Die konkreten Spielräume, die sich den politischen Akteuren eröffneten, hingen jedoch entscheidend von den historischen Rahmenbedingungen ab, namentlich vom jeweiligen Stadium der religiösen Traditionsbildung und den vorherrschenden religiös-kulturellen Paradigmen zur Vergangenheitsrezeption. Untersucht werden erb- und amtscharismatische Konzeptualisierungen der Herrschaft, Fragen der Rekrutierung von Eliten sowie Probleme der Instrumentalisierung und Transformation religiöser Vorstellungen zum Zweck der Integration politischer Gemeinwesen. Die Arbeit unternimmt eine umfassende Kontextualisierung zweier "Ereignisse" der politischen Geschichte, wobei sie Fragestellungen der Religions-, Kultur- und Sozialgeschichte aufgreift und funktionale Äquivalente in den beiden untersuchten religiös-politischen Systemen aufzeigt. Das Instrumentarium des Vergleichs ist wesentlich von den Kategorien Max Webers und Pierre Bourdieus inspiriert, wobei der methodische Ansatz des Vergleichs unter Aufnahme von Anregungen der neueren Globalgeschichte weiterentwickelt wird. Durch die Analyse zweier komplementärer Phänomene aus der christlich-lateinischen sowie der arabisch-islamischen Geschichte leistet die Arbeit einen Beitrag zur Konzeptualisierung einer politischen Kulturgeschichte in der Vormoderne. Die theoriegeleitete, komparative und problemorientierte Untersuchung macht Methoden und Konzepte der Historischen Komparatistik für die Frühmittelalterforschung fruchtbar und unterstützt auf diese Weise die geschichtswissenschaftliche und mediävistische Theoriebildung.

Beschreibung: This work covers the dominant aspects of landforms and processes related to the cold-climate (periglacial) and hyperarid environment of Mars and relates the knowledge obtained from terrestrial research to possible Martian analogue landforms. Among the plethora of landforms related to cold-climate environments and subsurface permafrost on Mars, those features have been investigated in detail that are related to the creep of ice and debris at the Martian dichotomy escarpment and the southern-hemispheric impact basins, especially Hellas Planitia, and which have been described controversially as either glacial or periglacial in nature. Structures related to seasonal freeze-thaw cycles on Mars which are generally known as thermal contraction polygons form a second major focus of this work. Research presented on this topic focuses on the northern hemispheric Utopia Planitia area and the south-polar cap of Mars. This work was carried out on the basis of observational and geomorphometrical analyses by utilizing imaging-sensor and topographic data in order to address questions regarding the history, development, and current state of cold-climate landforms on Mars. This work provides new insights with respect to age, composition, source of debris and ice, and the deformational and degradational history of lobate debris aprons and similar landforms. It is shown that processes which led to creep of debris and ice at the northern hemispheric dichotomy boundary are transitional in nature and are not easily categorized using standard definitions commonly used in terrestrial research...

Beschreibung: Die Untersuchung der Oberflächenzusammensetzung von Ganymed basiert auf Daten des abbildenden Spektrometers NIMS an Bord der Raumsonde Galileo, das die Ganymedoberfläche im Spektralbereich des Nahen Infrarot detektiert. Die Verarbeitung der vorliegenden Spektraldaten einschließlich der quantitativen Analyse der spektralen Signaturen in den Reflexionsspektren von Ganymed wie deren Charakterisierung in Abhängigkeit der geologischen Oberflächenstrukturen bildet den zentralen Teil der Arbeit. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Veränderungen der Reflexionseigenschaften der Ganymedoberfläche auf den wechselnden Anteil von Wassereis und Gesteinsmaterial und dem Gehalt an CO2 zurückzuführen sind. Die simultane Analyse der Absorptionen von Wassereis erlaubt es ferner, erstmals Veränderungen des relativen Anteils und der Partikelgröße von Wassereis getrennt voneinander zu erfassen...

The procedures can be divided into local and global optimization techniques according to the type of the problem. If good initial values are given, the usage of local optimization techniques, (e.g., the Gauß-Newton procedure) is justified. If this is not the case, and the minimizing function has various local minimums, a global strategy must be implemented. Applying global optimization techniques one will not yield the global solution with certainty; only a probabilistic solution will be obtained. Nevertheless, combining local and global strategy and inclusion of all available a priori-information, a global optimizing system can be established that yields practical results for a wide area of problems.
