By recovering the rival strands of Enlightenment at play in Habsburg Central Europe and the Empire they produced, Fillafer offers a fresh reading of both.
    Description: Das Geschichtsbild der Aufklärung als Projekt der säkular-demokratischen Moderne entstand maßgeblich durch die Französische Revolution - doch es verschüttete ihre historische Vielgestaltigkeit. Franz L. Fillafer entdeckt die Aufklärung in der Habsburgermonarchie neu: Anhand ihrer Gestalter sowie der von ihnen aufgebauten Wissenskultur und Gesellschaft weist er erstmals nach, dass das Habsburgerreich während der »Restauration« kein Bollwerk gegen Aufklärung und Revolution war. Stattdessen legt Fillafer Varianten der Aufklärung frei, die nicht in der Revolution mündeten, sondern gerade im Kontext der Revolutionsabwehr gediehen. Sie speisten sich aus eigenen Quellen und prägten den Habsburgerstaat langfristig.

    Description: Natural disasters are a challenge for human societies. The young German nation that reacted in the face of the 100-year Rhine flood (1882/83) can be characterized by the key elements of science, technology, economy, administration, and national consciousness. Given this framework the main actors used the disaster to expand their influence (e.g. scientific research) and to establish solidly relations. In sum, dealing with a natural disaster like the Rhine flood can only be understood in the opposing terms of risk and opportunity.
    Description: Katastrophen stellen eine Herausforderung für gesellschaftliches Handeln dar. Der Autor zeigt, auf welche Weise die politischen und wissenschaftlichen Strukturen des Deutschen Kaiserreiches dieser Herausforderung begegneten und sich im Sinne des Fortschrittsdenkens zu Nutze machten. Es wird deutlich, dass Naturkatastrophen wie das Jahrhunderthochwasser am Rhein für den jungen Nationalstaat nicht nur ein bedrohliches Risiko darstellten, sondern auch eine Chance für gesellschaftlichen Wandel. So stärkten sie das Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl und lieferten einen Anlass für regionale Entwicklungshilfeprogramme sowie wissenschaftliche Forschung.

    Description: Hieronymus Colloredo (1732–1812) was Salzburg's Prince Archbishop between 1772 and 1803. He corresponded with his brother, the imperial vice-chancellor Gundaker Collordo (1731–1807). A total of 655 letters have been preserved, most of them from the years 1790 to 1800.
