Description:
Abstract: The Upper Rhinegraben is one of the most important areas for municipal
and industrial water-supply in Southwest Germany. Its hydrogeologic system consists of
a leakage multiaquifer formation. The hydrochemical composition in the different aquifer
layers can be distinguished by the main components (i.e. calcium, magnesia, sulfate,
chloride). Time Series Analysis of the hydrochemical compositions were made to recognize
the length of periods and to describe the development of the concentrations.
In the different aquifer layers the Chemical composition of groundwater is changing at
short and long terms. Monthly taken samples of the shallow groundwater in the downstream
of agricultural areas show saisonally changing concentrations of the main components.
These are accumulated in the unsaturated zone during a dry period and washed
out at the beginning of the recharge. Comparable saisonalities are missing in the lower
part of the upper aquifer layer and in the downstream of woodlands as well as in the
deeper aquifer layers.
The second aquifer layer is the most important water resource. Under distinct hydraulic
and lithofacial conditions the concentrations rose significantly since 20 years and
more. The hydrochemical composition of this groundwater can be interpreted as a mixture
between the first and the second aquifer layer. The results of the Time Series Analysis
show that the concentrations of the main components tend increasingly towards the
composition of the upper aquifer. The forecasts until 2000 predict that these processes
will last undiminished. At long term it is therefore possible that pollutants as pesticides
or chlorated hydrocarbons, which can be detected in the unconfined aquifer, reach the
pumping wells.
