Description: In the extensive sandstone complex between Bardai and Aozou (Tibesti Mts.‚ Central Sahara) two separate areas have been plotted on a ZEISS-Stereotop alter establishing a net of control points by radial triangulation (slotted templet method). The aerial photographs used were contact prints at a scale of 1 :20 000 and 1 : 50 000. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that stratigraphic and tectonic problems of unknown regions may be solved by means of aerial photographic interpretation if it is possible t0 get ground truth from a small test site. In the investigated area the conformity between test site and unknown region was so good, that we can speak of an „Analogon Aozou“ to the „Model Bardai“; this means that the same photo interpretation key may be applied t0 both areas. The photographic tone is of special importance among the various parameters of interpretation keys as in arid climates it is mainly an expression of desert varnish intensity. This varnish normally masks the original rock colour but it enables the interpreter to detect different resistance against erosion in rocks. Therefore he may deduce different grain size in bedrocks as well as the decrease of consolidation in ignimbrites depending on the distance from the eruption—point or silified zones of jointing, fault breccias, mylonites etc. Furthermore it accentuates the contact metamorphism at volcanic vents, dikes and sills. The latter could be identified only in that way. Since the desert varnish is also a function of time, age relations (e. g. between depositional terraces or alluvial fans) can be recognized. In addition t0 the photographic tone homogeneity, surface texture, morphology, topographic position, fracture density and drainage density have been used for the differentiation of rock units. The last two parameters are discussed in regard t0 the comparability of data collected by different authors. The geologic aerial photographic interpretation was carried out in the following steps: identification — comparison — deduction, and in mapping large areas it proved an ideal method compared with the traditional way of field work. In the isolated sandstone complex, surrounded by volcanic rocks and metamorphic schists, four different sandstone units could be discerned and mapped for the first time. The igneous rocks were distinguished by their chemical composition (acid, intermediate, basic), by their form (Stock, volcanic vent, dike, plateau), or by their mode of emplacement (intrusion, extrusion, effusion). In addition to the tertiary—quaternary phase one can deduce a formerly unknown precretaceous magmatic phase. Finally, the great tectonic structures were mapped and the directions of movement and the azimuths of fractures were determined. The results of the aerial photographic interpretation from an area of more than 1000 km2 are presented in two separate photogeological maps (scale 1 : 50 000).

Description: Summary: The Enneri Misky in the southern Tibesti foreland was surveyed and a geomorphological map was drawn. Erosional landforms and the tectonic and geological structure of the surface forms were investigated. Analysis of landform unit distribution indicated the evolution and the relative age of the surface forms. The most important formation phases are shown in Table 6. Particularly important is the hiatus between the traces of the extremely variable Late Pleistocene-Holocene wet phases and the long Tertiary tropical phases indicated by extensive peneplain formations. In the Quaternary epoch arid formation processes dominated in the Tibesti foreland.

Description: a) Morphodynamic processes The sandy alluvial plains of the Central Sahara have only a slight incline (0—3 %) and are the result of the combined action of Wind and water. The following processes could be demonstrated in detail by field experiments (artificial rain): 1. sedimentation of fine grains (fine sand, silt, clay) by precipitation too slight for run-Off, 2. accumulation of Wind-transported material (0.5 mm dust particles), 3. stream-flood and occasionally sheet—flood transport of surface material by precipitation of run-off strength, 4. deflation of medium and fine grains (0.5 mm clay dust) after transport (material exposed). The processus act as follows: In the case of precipitation not heavy enough for run-off, loose sediments are exsolved on the surface. The finer grains seep downwards through the infiltrating water in the pore space of the sediment; they collect and seal off the subsurface. A layer of fine material is formed at varying depths in the subsurface (2—10 cm) depending on the amount of coarse grains in the surface material. The grains sedimented in the subsurface are replaced by windfreight in the surface layer. Winnowed sand replenishes the sediment With medium-sized grains, fine grains are added When the dust settles after the Wind has died down. These two processes may be seen as accumulative (formative) processes. The transport of surface material depends on its thickness and the intensity of precipitation. It is brought about by the fine material layer binding together in the subsurface and damming up the water. Stream-flood (in the case of less intense precipitation) and sheet-flood (when precipitation is particularly heavy) bring this surface layer into a pushing and rolling motion. After the spontaneous and sporadic transport the grains movable by the wind lie on the surface again and can be blown away (the sandy alluvial plains are thus a source of supply for the recent dunes). b) Morphogenesis Sandy alluvial plains are characteristic formations of the Central Sahara and are found parallel to the mountain fringes. They developed on the lowest (most recent) tertiary peneplain level under the given extreme arid climatic conditions. They are therefore to be regarded as a typical arid morphodynamic formation, as the arid form of conserving and developing peneplains (Sukzessionsflächen). Serirs and sandy alluvial plains are similar in form and stratification. Both share the same morphodynamical genesis; the former are stationary forms, the latter active. The serirs also have a polygenetic structure: quaternary fans spread out over the tertiary peneplains during the pluvial maxima. During the drying-out phases these were re-formed into serirs by the same processes observed today in the formation of sand plains, in all probability in “Sahel“ climates
