    Description: The Common Slavic *bogŭ ‘god’ displays an astonishingly rich derivation across Slavic languages, both numerically and semantically, with lexemes including almost all parts of speech: inflected (nouns, adjectives, verbs, pronouns) and not inflected (adverbs, connectives, prepositions). In this article the author pays special attention to the exclamations and other exclamation-related expressions containing this base word, as well as providing a description of the syntactic patterns from which such lexical units are generated and a brief analysis of the semantic processes (lexicalization, refunctionalization) from which they derive.

    Description: “Learn from Gorky”: “conversion” of Japanese proletarian wrier Tokunaga Sunao. In the proletarian literary movement that flourished in Japan in the 1920s and 1930s, the main goal of proletarian literature was considered for intellectual writers to awaken the will to revolution in working readers. The writer from working class Sunao Tokunaga after the collapse of the revolutionary movement in 1933 began to write stories based on the life and attitude of the working people, offering to “learn from Gorky” and his autobiographical works that depicted the behavior and attitude of people at the bottom of society. At the same time, Tokunaga was involved in the colonial movement of the Japanese Empire of that time, because he, as a result of identification with the Japanese workers, lost sight of the expulsion and oppression of the indigenous people in Manchuria.

    Description: Ukrainian motifs in A. S. Makarenko’s Pedagogical Poem. Makarenko’s Pedagogical Poem in the Stalin era was perceived as a eulogy to the collective, while in late Soviet times the dominance of the collective and the tendency to violent solutions already irritated the Russian reader. The German historian Goetz Hillig saw Makarenko as a world pedagogical genius, created his scientific biography, and published a scholarly edition of his writings in German. Elena Tolstaya looks at The Poem, set in post-revolutionary Ukraine, in the aspect of Russian-Ukrainian bilingualism, and looks for possible responses to the actualities of the late 20s – early 30s.

And only because temple architecture – as well as paintings, statues, gardens etc. – shows the presence of the Buddha in this way does it become a religious place where the Buddha is actually present. The final discussion of this study puts these Buddhist teachings in a dialogue with modern aesthetic architectural concepts argued by temple architects. The contrasting points of view make it clear that the explicitly Buddhist idea of Buddhist temple architecture can not be grasped by aesthetics, because its purpose is to show the invisible presence of the Buddha and not to be a sensual (i.e. aesthetic) experience of the visible object itself in the first place. However, aesthetic concepts of art have become common in Japan since the late 19th century. They are the foundation of the described new ways in which temples were built and designed since then. One indication for the impact of aesthetics are Japanese words like shimboru シンボル/shōchō 象徴 (symbol) or fun’iki 雰囲気 (atmosphere) which are used by architects to describe their temple architecture and matters of design. These words were formed around the turn of the century to express European concepts of art and aesthetics, since before that these words and ideas simply did not exist in Japan. And it is only since then, that temples were perceived as aesthetic symbols with various meanings that can be defined by an architect, and that they have a certain atmosphere which should be designed for making visitors feeling comfortable. Now it is the architect himself who gives meaning to its work and who is responsible for a nice spatial experience. But none of these architects is talking about himself becoming Buddha by building a temple. So not only the architectural appearance and construction of Buddhist temples have changed enormously throughout the last 150 years, but also the task of building itself. There has always been change in appearance and construction throughout the history of Buddhism and in the different Buddhist cultures, but the redefinition of the temple as an architectural piece of art is a very recent development in Japan and the actual new idea causing these dramatic architectural changes. "
    Description: "Viele buddhistische Tempelbauten in Japan sind heute aus Beton. Sie haben Glasfenster, Teppichböden und elektrisches Licht. Manche sehen aus wie gewöhnliche Wohnhäuser, andere imitieren das Erscheinungsbild traditioneller Bauweisen, wieder andere sind von Star-Architekten geplant. Alle diese Bauten zeigen, dass die alte und einst durch die buddhistische Religion formulierte Aufgabe, einen Tempel zu bauen, in den letzten 150 Jahren in unterschiedlicher Weise neu interpretiert wurde. Gründe dafür sind die japanische Auseinandersetzung mit westlichen Ideen von Kunst, Architektur, Religion und Ästhetik ab dem späten 19. Jahrhundert, die darauf rückführbare Annahme, Tempelbau sei eine Aufgabe für kunstschaffende Architekten, sowie das Bedürfnis, den Ansprüchen der Gegenwart neu zu begegnen. All das führte dazu, dass Jahrhunderte alte liturgische Ideen des Tempelbaus, die in buddhistischen Traditionstexten mit ritueller Wichtigkeit festgehalten sind, ihre Bedeutung zugunsten eines neuen ästhetischen Kunstdenkens eingebüßt haben. Ordnungen und Darstellungen zum Beispiel von maṇḍalas oder Buddhaländern, die fuür den Tempelbau formgebend und sinnstiftend sind, werden in einem künstlerischen Denken von Raumerlebnis und Baustil zu blassen ästhetischen Gestaltungselementen. Diese Studie zeigt zum einen anhand vieler Beispiele die angesprochene jüngere bauliche Entwicklung im Tempelbau auf und legt dabei einen Schwerpunkt auf die Frage nach dem spezifisch Religiösen der neuen Baugestalt. Zum anderen geht sie gleichzeitig der Frage nach, was seitens der buddhistischen Religion als Aufgabe für den Tempel überhaupt formuliert ist, was dies für den Tempelbau bedeutet und wo neben der veränderten neuen Baugestalt deswegen das eigentlich Neue in den jüngeren Entwicklungen des Tempelbaus liegt.     Description: Moscow at the turn of history. About the “toponymic upheaval” and not only. The article digs into the urban (and political) geography of Moscow and how this is perceived in Italy in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. In particular, the investigation will focus on a number of volumes related to the late Soviet era that were published in Italy between the late 1980s and the mid-1990s. The authors are mainly newspaper and TV correspondents: Vittorio Zucconi (1944-2019, Il Corriere della sera, Si fa presto a dire Russia); Demetrio Volcic (1931-2021, RAI, Mosca. I giorni della fine); Enrico Franceschini (1956, La Repubblica) who is both a journalist (La fine dell'impero. Ultimo viaggio in URSS) and a novelist (La donna della Piazza Rossa). However, the texts index also includes a politician, Giulio Andreotti (L’URSS vista da vicino. Dalla guerra fredda a Gorbaciov), and a comic character, Mickey Mouse, who, in an October 1988 issue number, shows how in the years of perestroika people looked at the nascent (dying) country with both fear and curiosity. All the authors, regardless of their profession and orientation, have the feeling that they are also witnessing history through urban geography; it is no coincidence that all the texts analyzed, to varying extents, “photograph” buildings, streets, monuments... that is to say , “places,” which may be “old,” i.e. inherited from previous travelers or the result of historical, political or literary reminiscences, or “new” places, where a new path of history is being written.

    Description: How the Steel Was Tempered in East Asia. Nikolai Ostrovsky’s novel How Steel Was Tempered (1932-34) tells the story of a young Ukrainian man named Pavel Korchagin who sacrifices his life and body to forge a steel-like spirit amid revolution, civil war, and postwar socialist construction. Although his physical injuries, which left him paralyzed and even blind, looks somehow grotesque, but his heroic self-sacrifice also had the power to inspire young readers. Regarded as an exemplary work of Soviet socialist realism, it was translated into many languages and read avidly at one time by left-wing readers in the West as well as in the Communist countries in the East. It was particularly influential in China, where it is so popular that even today it is invariably named as one of the favorite books of university students. This is in contrast to post-Soviet Russia today, in which the novel has lost the privileged position it once enjoyed and is no longer widely read. In China under the socialist regime, Ostrovsky’s novel was published in large numbers as suitable reading for young people and incorporated into school education. However, their active introduction in the public sphere alone does not explain their popularity. Chinese readers seem to have become deeply emotionally involved in the protagonist’s unsuccessful love affair with Tonya, a young girl whose bourgeois gestures and characterization must have been considered negative. As a result, the Soviet ideological novel has brought an unexpected meaning of European-style romantic love for Chinese readers. This presentation will trace the reception of Ostrovsky’s novel and the changes in the heroine Tonya’s image by comparing five adaptations: two Soviet films in 1942 and 1957, a Chinese lianhuanhua (serial picture book) in 1972, a Japanese manga in 1975, and a Chinese TV drama in 1999.

    Chapter Vladivostok as a Meeting Point between West and East at the Beginning of the 20th Century (Around Years of Siberian Investigation) (2024)

    Description: Vladivostok is likened to the Bosphorus. The remoteness of the Far East made it difficult for the European part of the Russian Empire to recognise Vladivostok geographically. Therefore, through analogy to the Mediterranean, it was consciously integrated into the state. On the other hand, by using kanji combinations, which evoke images of traditional Japanese poetry, the Japanese created a sense of familiarity with Vladivostok. In most cases, regarding the social situation during the Revolutionary and Intervention War periods, researchers’ interest was restricted to the scheme of the conflict between the Red Army and the White Army and the victory or defeat of the October Revolution. However, more than 30 years after the dissolution of the USSR, the events of this period are now being examined by scholars mainly from the perspective of the residents and outsiders in various regions who, without knowing the consequences of the revolution, were both anticipating and anxious about significant social changes. The multicultural nature of the Far East is being discussed on the occasion of the centenary of the Siberian exodus. This article examines the cultural situation in and around Vladivostok, focusing on developments such as the education system and modernist currents in the arts. Vladivostok served as both an entrance to Siberia for the Japanese or other foreign troops and an exit for emigres.

    Description: Reception of Russian Literature of the Silver Age in China. In the late 20th century, there emerged a significant cultural fervor for the Russian literature of the Silver Age within Chinese academic circles, primarily focused on literary studies. This article examines the history of translating Russian literature of the Silver Age in China and its level of research development. It is revealed that, on one hand, the initial attempts at translating literary works of the Silver Age into Chinese began in the first half of the 20th century, with notable activity during the May Fourth Movement and towards the end of the 20th century. Consequently, works by well-known writers had more opportunities to be translated into Chinese and gain attention from the academic community, while many works by lesser-known authors remained overlooked. On the other hand, Chinese scholars’ research on Russian literature of the Silver Age encompasses various literary genres such as poetry, novels, and dramas, with a focus on individual writers and their works. However, comprehensive and systematic studies in this field are still lacking. The examination of the history of translation and the level of research on Russian literature of the Silver Age in China contributes to academic progress, facilitates exchange and collaboration among scholars, provides reference materials and recommendations, and establishes a foundation for further in-depth research.

    Description: The Ukrainian Theme in the Legacy of Vladimir (Ze’ev) Jabotinsky. Vladimir (Ze’ev) Jabotinsky (1880-1940) combined the characteristics of a convinced individualist, a nationalist-statist, and an equally convinced liberal with a tendency toward anarchism. He respected every people’s struggle for independence and called nationalism “the individualism of nations”. In his prose, essays and journalism, Jabotinsky was able to synthesize rational analysis with fearless intuition. This combination enabled him to predict both World Wars I and II and the Holocaust, long before Hitler invaded Poland. As a young man he lived for several years in Italy, which he considered his spiritual homeland. His views were formed, on the one hand, under the influence of Italian socialists, Garibaldi and Italian culture in general, and, on the other hand, under the influence of Ukrainian socialists, champions of independence. He maintained friendly contacts with some of them because he combined his Zionism with Ukrainianophilia, which survived despite the monstrous Jewish pogroms organized by the Petlyura troops in 1919-20. A special theme touched upon in the report is the supposed echoes of Ukrainian spontaneous individualism in Jabotinsky’s anarchist tendencies.

    Description: Korehito Kurahara and “Proletarian Realism”: Proletarian Literature in Japan in 1920s. This paper examines the proletarian literature movement that emerged in Japan in the 1920s, focusing on Korehito Kurahara, a leading proponent. Kurahara studied Russian literature and his theory, “proletarian realism,” was based on concepts promoted by the Russian Association of Proletarian Writers (RAPP). The paper analyzes two of Kurahara’s works from which proletarian realism originated. Both works are based on arguments between leaders of the proletarian writers’ organization and A. Volonsky. After Kurahara, Japan attempted to interpret proletarian literature from the perspective of literary history, which Kurahara incorporated into Japanese literature based on RAPP discussions. This suggests that Japanese proletarian literary theory developed under the influence of the Soviet Union.

    Description: The Russian Revolution of 1917, which in reality consisted of several uprisings, forms the caesura between the »long« 19th and the »short« 20th century and ushered in the so-called »Age of Extremes« (Eric Hobsbawm). Many who had believed in the success of the revolution were bitterly disappointed by the actual developments. Once again, a revolution had not been able to achieve what many had expected, even longed for. The revolutionary uprising of February 1917 ended with its corruption in October of the same year. On the basis of an analytical comparative model, Frank Jacob addresses the question of the process of this corruption and shows whether it was due to an inevitable development of events or rather to the will to power of a few.

Viele, die an den Erfolg der Revolution geglaubt hatten, wurden von den tatsächlichen Entwicklungen bitter enttäuscht. Die revolutionäre Erhebung des Februar 1917 endete mit ihrer Korrumpierung im Oktober desselben Jahres. Frank Jacob widmet sich auf Basis eines analytischen Vergleichsmodells der Frage nach dem Prozess dieser Korrumpierung und zeigt, ob diese einer zwangsläufigen Entwicklung der Ereignisse oder vielmehr dem Machtwillen einiger weniger geschuldet war.

    Description: The successful connection between content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge is considered a parameter for success in teacher education. In recent years, history didactics has also dealt intensively with the question of how the relationship between these three facets should be aligned for the various phases of history teacher education. However, one focus to date has been on the interplay between educational sciences and history didactics. This anthology, on the other hand, attempts to bring historical science and history didactics into a more intensive dialogue. To achieve this, various scholars specializing in modern and contemporary history contribute articles that are commented on by history didacticists. The volume covers various topics, including global history, but also the history of Northern and Eastern Europe or queer history. Likewise, a view into practical museum work is opened up. The resulting dialogue shows that the various subdisciplines of historical scholarship can benefit enormously from an exchange with each other.

Der Sammelband unternimmt dagegen den Versuch, Fachwissenschaft und Fachdidaktik stärker in den Dialog zu bringen. Dazu tragen verschiedene Kolleg*innen aus der Fachwissenschaft mit einer Spezialisierung in der neueren und neuesten Geschichte Beiträge bei, die von Geschichtsdidaktiker*innen kommentiert werden. Der Band deckt dabei verschiedene Themenfelder ab, u.a. die Globalgeschichte, aber auch die Geschichte Nord- und Osteuropas oder Queer History. Ebenso wird ein Blick in die praktische Museumsarbeit eröffnet.     Description: In those Slavic languages where the vocative inflectional case endings are used inconsistently, a statistically increased occurrence of vocative’s endings can be observed with nouns having a diminutive or hypocoristic semantics. Assuming that is the ‘affective charge’ of some specific nouns which enhances the probability of vocative case forms, the present paper has two aims: 1. to verify empirically in three Slavic languages (Serbian, Polish, Bulgarian) whether the vocative case is better preserved with nouns having a derogatory semantics (insults and bad words), 2. to establish which are the rules governing their use.

Bislang wurde jedoch kaum untersucht, wie diese Prozesse in den einzelnen Ländern tatsächlich von den Medien repräsentiert wurden und welche Folgen dies für die Holocaust-Erinnerung hatte. Diese Studie analysiert niederländische und belgische Presse-, Radio- und Fernsehberichte über spektakuläre NS-Verfahren. Der Eichmann- und der Auschwitz-Prozess stehen im Zentrum des Interesses; der Nürnberger Hauptprozess wird als frühes Beispiel vergleichend herangezogen. Während sich der Umfang der Beiträge und die vermittelten Informationen in den Massenmedien gleichen, ergeben sich bei der Frage nach den langfristigen gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen eklatante Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Ländern. Besonders aufschlussreich ist dabei der Umgang mit der eigenen Besatzungsvergangenheit.

    Description: Besides its temporal semantics, the imperfect tense can express a wide range of modal meanings, which occur most typically in spoken varieties of language. The paper contrastively explores the modal uses of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian, a Romance and Slavic language respectively, and shows to what extent they are similar or diverge in the two languages. Although the basic notional configuration of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian seems to be exactly the same, occurrences of modal meanings are less frequent in Bulgarian than in Italian. Possible explanatory hypotheses suggest that the peculiarities of the tense system (dedicated future-in-the-past form; specific narrative mood), as well as the different syntactic rules governing the sequence of tenses in related sentences, put major constraints on the development of modal meanings of the imperfect tense in Bulgarian.

    Description: Without Rosi Wolfstein and Paul Frölich, our image of Rosa Luxemburg would be completely different today. In the 1920s, the couple worked together on the estate of the murdered politician, which made it possible to produce the first edition of her works. Later, when Frölich and Wolfstein had fled from the National Socialists into exile in France, one of the earliest and at the same time most authentic biographies of Luxemburg (Rosa Luxemburg: Gedanke und Tat) was written by both of them in 1939 under Frölich's name, which was fed by this rich store of knowledge. But who were Rosi Wolfstein and Paul Frölich, who seem almost forgotten today? Their own political careers each started in the SPD before World War I, led them through the anti-war camp to the founding congress of the KPD (Communist Party). While Frölich was elected to the Reichstag, Wolfstein sat in the Prussian Landtag. Out of anti-Stalinist conviction, they left the KPD and eventually became co-founders of the SAP (Socialist Workers' Party), which they headed before fleeing. But they returned to Germany... Riccardo Altieri illustrates in a very readable way the result of his research of several years into a double biography from the point of view of network history. Only by consulting international sources from Wolfstein's and Frölich's network could the study come into being at all, since the protagonists had not left a closed estate due to the persecution during the Nazi era.

    Description: The volume contains Andrea Trovesi’s linguistic writings, hitherto scattered in various journals and miscellanies, all characterized by a pragmatic approach. The first part collects studies on Slavic vocative conducted from a comparative-historical perspective ranging from Proto-Slavic to modern Slavic languages. These focus in particular on categorical transformations of the vocative, its relics, so-called ‘new vocatives,’ and pragmatic values developed in the various Slavic languages. The second part of the volume is devoted to modal meanings of the imperfect in a Slavic-Romance contrastive framework. The research privileges Bulgarian, but does not neglect the other Slavic languages of which it analyzes interesting residual peripheral aspects of such linguistic usage. Both lines of research presented here stand out for their originality and theoretical value considered from a point of view that leads from Slavic linguistics to the broader perspective of linguistics as a science of language.

    Description: In the monography Auf die Tour, I analyze the participation of Jews in popular culture in Vienna, Budapest and New York. I argue that entertainment in vaudevilles was shaped between the perception of difference and similarity, between human trafficking, covert prostitution, anti-Semitism and nationalism. Ultimately, my research shows how a space for Jewish-non-Jewish people was created in the coinciding of the mass migration movement and the emerging mass culture between the Habsburg Monarchy and the United States.

Sein Privatnachlass in Hohenfinow nordöstlich von Berlin wurde beim Vormarsch der Roten Armee 1945 vernichtet. Ziel der Edition ist es, die verschollenen Dokumente zu rekonstruieren. Etwa 2000 Stück, die meisten unveröffentlicht, konnten in verschiedenen Archiven ausfindig gemacht werden, z. B. im Politischen Archiv des Auswärtigen Amtes und im Bundesarchiv Berlin. Sie korrigieren das Bild dieses in der deutschen und internationalen Geschichtswissenschaft zumeist verkannten Kriegskanzlers in zahlreichen wesentlichen Zügen. Bethmann Hollweg verfügte über einen tiefen Blick in die Bewegungen der Zeit. Diesen ausgeprägten Vorausblick hatten in der neueren deutschen Geschichte neben ihm nur ganz wenige Kanzler wie Bismarck und Adenauer.

Based on a careful reading of a wide variety of scientific and popular texts, the book maps the functions of sunlight in western medicine and culture. It studies the history of light and heliotherapy in medicine and inves-tigates the transition of medical practices towards a marketed con-sumer product.     Description: Foreign judges The Influence of Swiss and German-Austrian judges upon jurisprudence in the principality of Liechtenstein, 1939-45 The principality of Liechtenstein has been a small country possessing limited resources. In matters of jurisprudence this meant adopting Austrian and Swiss legal codes and, along with local lawyers, electing attorneys from both neighboring countries as judges in Liechtenstein. While this practice worked during times of peace, it became tenuous during the era of National Socialism, and connected to the problem of potential national socialist influence upon the appointment of judges and on the practice of law. The annexation of Austria by the “Third Reich” turned Austrian judges working in Liechtenstein into “German” judges, who dispensed justice according to Nazi law in their home-land, but according to Liechtenstein law within the principality. Can a political influence upon these judges be shown? Did a national socialist spirit pervade Liechtenstein jurisprudence and the laws enacted during that time? What was the stance taken by the judges who were Swiss? The author discusses the peculiarities of justice in Liechtenstein during the Second World War.

    Description: Abstract in English* The promise of America Swiss foreign policy amidst the economic warfare of 1917-18 The book tells the dramatic history of the final two years of World War I, during which Switzerland was in between the fronts of the world powers. The surrounding struggle for global domination caused serious difficulties for the small state. Cut off from important food imports, resulting from the indiscriminate German submarine warfare, it turned for help to the USA. The pleas of a high-ranking “Swiss Mission” sent across the Atlantic were heeded: The USA supplied the landlocked country with grain thus averting famine. While America thus boosted its reputation, the German empire became more of a threat. Agitation increased when German agents were convicted in spy scandals and trials of bombers in Zurich. Despite German propaganda, the German empire was unable to maintain its influence in Switzerland. German diplomats, as representatives of the unpopular old order, were expelled from Switzerland when the Central Powers collapsed in the fall of 1918. The USA under President Woodrow Wilson was, in contrast, enthusiastically celebrated. This study, just barely one hundred years later, enables a new view of one of the most animated periods in Swiss history, offering an opportunity to reflect on the relation of this small country to the rest of the world.

(Fritz) Wiehert fest, es sei überraschend, wie wenig die Deutschen über die Niederlande und wie wenig die Niederländer über Deutschland wüssten, trotz oder gerade wegen der nachbarlichen Nähe. Was wurde unternommen, welche Mittel wurden eingesetzt, um die Niederlande zu einer Parteinahme zu bewegen oder sie Deutschland wenigstens gewogen zu stimmen? Hier ist vor allem der in Den Haag tätigen geheimen Hilfsstelle eine wichtige Rolle zuzuschreiben. Ihre Aufgabe war es, das neutrale Nachbarland durch kulturelle Mittel deutschfreundlich zu beeinflussen mit der Zielvorgabe, die Niederlande in einen kulturellen Außenposten im Sinne des Deutschen Reiches zu verwandeln.

This text, through a collection of essays by Italian and foreign specialists, seeks to investigate the premises and the results of the First World War in a vast area ranging from the Balkans to the Caucasus normally underrated by historiography, focusing on a series of problems (of ethnic, cultural or political character) which due to their complexity must be faced in an overall framework that takes into account the pre-war period and the first two decades of the twentieth century. The works reveal a very complex and stimulating picture, which leads us to reflect on long-term events and problems that involved all the countries that participated to the regional events, full of consequences for the peoples who lived there.

    Description: Crises, Criticism, and Sexual Deprivation The «Nacherziehung» (remedial upbringing) of male youth at the Aarburg facility, 1893-1981 The juvenile detention center Aarburg, founded in 1893, adhered superficially to an objective of separating juvenile offenders from adult offenders. From the beginning, however, roughly half of the inmates were institutionalized there in order to provide them with administrative maintenance. Power struggles soon after the institution opened, accusations of maltreatment and the suicide of two youths in the First World War era, the widely publicized critique of 1936 and the finally the “Heimkampagne” of 1970 are the focuses of this book. Source-based case studies sketch a nuanced picture of the daily life of the Aarburg institution across diverse decades, and the imponderability of interpersonal relations within the permanent emergency condition of a “total” institution. The author also devotes attention to the effects of sexual repression on the young inmates, which was not mentioned or addressed in official reports, making all the more striking, examples of this found within the archival sources analyzed here for the first time. The book offers insights into the quotidian experience of the inmates across the 20th century and also demonstrates the evolution of child-rearing techniques used on male juveniles.

What role has airplane noise played in development of the Geneva-Cointrin and Basel-Mühlhausen airports? How were the first airways established in Switzerland and how long have air traf-fic controllers been used there? This is the first comprehensive portrayal of the history of airports, airfields and air traffic control in Switzerland, from their begin-nings and up through the end of the 20th century. Rather than focus on specific facilities separately, the author takes a Switzerland-wide perspective which he situates in a global con-text. Using extensive source material, he reconstructs the origins and development of Swiss aviation infrastructure and illuminates the impacts of regulatory frameworks and historical actors upon this development. He takes into account a broad spectrum of fac-tors, such as crucial international influences, the competition be-tween airports that has persisted since the interwar years, the role of the Swiss federal government, and issues concerning aircraft noise that emerged after the Second World War. In addition to to-day’s airports, this study also examines long-since discontinued facilities and important projects which were proposed but never completed, including the European central airport for interconti-nental seaplanes at Lake Constance, and the Swiss central airport at Bern-Utzenstorf and Lake Neuchâtel.

Das zweite Kapitel befasst sich mit der »Judenschule« in der Speckstraße, die bis zum zweiten Abbruch jüdischen Lebens Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts für Gottesdienste genutzt wurde. Das dritte Kapitel widmet sich der Judenpolitik der damaligen Braunschweiger Herzöge sowie der Entstehung des jüdischen »Tempels« in einem Hinterhaus der Buchstraße (heute Prinzenstraße) zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die folgenden Kapitel beschreiben die Entstehung und spätere Erweiterung der neuen Synagoge an den Maschstraßen, die von 1872 bis 1938 den jüdischen Göttinger Bürgern als Gotteshaus diente. Das Buch berichtet im Folgenden von der Schändung und Zerstörung der Synagoge in der so genannten Reichskristallnacht am 9. November 1938. Im letzten Kapitel beschreibt der Autor den Neubeginn der jüdischen Gemeinde in Göttingen »im Schatten der Schoah« und den Aufbau einer neuen (alten) Synagoge neben dem jüdischen Gemeindezentrum in der Angerstraße.

Like some of the other members of the group, he built up extensive trade between South America, especially between Brazil and Hamburg. In the course of his long life he thus became a pioneer of German-Brazilian relations. His wealth allowed him to establish a generous residence in Wentorf near Hamburg and a foundation in Lüneburg, where he attended school at the Johanneum. In all this he became the ancestor of a large family that is still alive today.

Betrachtet werden diese aus Sicht unterschiedlicher Geisteswissenschaften wie Philosophie, Literatur, Geschichte, Kunstgeschichte und Musikwissenschaft. Die traditionellen Topoi der deutschen Imagologie, die überall in Europa eine große Resonanz gefunden haben (das romantische Deutschland, das Land der Dichter und Denker, aber ab dem Krieg von 1870 auch das preußische Feindbild), werden dabei in Betracht gezogen. Konstitutiv für den Prozess der Identitätsbildung in Belgien bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg war die deutsch-germanische Komponente, die in der Metapher der sog. âme belge als Kultursynthese zum Ausdruck kam. Der Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs hat hier besonders traumatisch gewirkt, was zur Folge hatte, dass diese partielle „Zugehörigkeit“ Belgiens zur deutschen Kultursphäre drastisch neuevaluiert wurde, unabhängig von der Schaffung eines deutschsprachigen Gebiets in Belgien durch den Versailler Vertrag.

Bei Büchern ist sie relativ schwierig: Meist geht es um Massenware ohne großen materiellen Wert und die Bücher sind oft nach schwer nachweisbaren Odysseen an ihre Standorte gelangt. Dennoch setzen sich immer mehr Bibliotheken mit ihrer NS-Vergangenheit auseinander. Der Bibliothekshistoriker Jürgen Babendreier bringt es auf den Punkt: »In den geraubten Büchern wirkt Geschichte nach, lebt unsichtbar Erinnerung fort, wird historische Verantwortung präsent.«

    Description: Die Halbinsel Kola im Nordwesten Russlands stellte die sowjetische Verwaltung vor ein Energieproblem. Kola war zwar reich an Bodenschätzen, verfügte jedoch über keine fossilen Brennstoffe. Wie die Region mit Energie zu versorgen sei, war über Jahrzehnte ein Verhandlungsgegenstand. Sowjetische Botaniker forschten auf der Halbinsel Kola an einer arktistauglichen Kartoffel. Zur selben Zeit entstanden Wasserkraftwerke jenseits des Polarkreises; Kumpel förderten Kohle in gefrorenen Minen. Diese Bemühungen der 1930er Jahre verband ein Leitgedanke: Die Energieversorgung jeder sowjetischen Region sollte eigenständig sein. Nach 1945 wich diese Maxime vermehrt überregionalen Interdependenzen. Kola verband sich durch Hochspannungsleitungen, Brennstoffeinfuhr und internationale Kraftwerkprojekte immer stärker mit fernen Landschaften. Regionale Autarkie und gesamtstaatliche Verflechtung waren Grundgedanken sowjetischen Verwaltungshandelns, dessen Erbe nicht nur im Energiesektor bis heute nachwirkt.

Sie feierten ihn als neuen Prometheus, als denjenigen, der durch seine Universitätsreformen die österreichischen Universitäten mit dem Licht der Aufklärung erfüllt habe und die Universitäten in eine neue Ära führen werde.Aichner untersucht die Zeitenwende der österreichischen Universitäten am Beispiel der Universität Innsbruck. Im Zentrum der Studie steht die Umsetzung der Thun-Hohenstein´schen Reformen im Spannungsfeld von gesamtstaatlichen Interessen und lokalen Voraussetzungen. Behandelt werden außerdem die Auswirkungen der Reform in einer mittel- und langfristigen Perspektive.

    Description: Hans and Rahel Liebeschütz were a German-Jewish scientific couple. Both grew up in Hamburg during the German Empire and began their scientific careers in the Weimar Republic. Rahel Liebeschütz was the first woman to habilitate at the Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg. Hans Liebeschütz was a historian and habilitated in Medieval Latin philology in 1929. The transfer of power to the National Socialists meant the end of their academic careers. Nevertheless, they remained in Hamburg until 1938 and experienced with their three children the increasing disenfranchisement of Jews. It was not until 1938/1939 that they emigrated to England, where they remained after the end of the war. Their impressive career and difficult life in the "Third Reich" and in exile are traced from archival and personal sources.

    Description: Biographical documentation of a search for traces of German emigration after 1933 During the National Socialist era, thousands of emigrants were deprived of their German citizenship. This is the first time that this state injustice has been documented for a group of people. Sources and research on the history of the legal profession in the "Third Reich", the genesis of the expatriation law of 14 July 1933 and the practice of bureaucratic persecution are dealt with in an introductory section. In addition, the consequential punishment of academic expatriation is demonstrated for the universities with law faculties. Affected by the punitive expatriation were hundreds of lawyers, among them half a dozen female lawyers. 610 short biographies recall both luminaries and unknown representatives of the profession. The lawyers who were declared "deprived of German citizenship" were, with few exceptions, Jews, stigmatised and persecuted as Jewish lawyers. Only a few of the lawyers expelled from their profession and homeland returned from exile. Among them were the lawyers Fritz Löwenthal, Rudolf Katz and Friedrich Wilhelm Wagner, who were expatriated after 1933. Appointed to the Parliamentary Council, they voted for the adoption of the Basic Law on 8 May 1949. While Löwenthal retired from politics, Katz served as Minister of Justice in Kiel until 1950. In 1951, he was elected by the Bundesrat as a judge of the newly founded Federal Constitutional Court. Wagner had been a member of the German Bundestag since 1949. In 1961, he moved from Bonn to Karlsruhe, and succeeded Katz as a judge of the Second Senate and Vice-President of the constitutional body.

    Description: Yodel and Yodel-Song in the Lower Austrian / Styrian Wechsel region from the beginning of the 19th century, completed with local research 2001–2019 (especially Schwaigen-Reigen® 2007–2009 – traditional music in 18 alpine huts at the beginning of the alpine pasture in June) and references to other sources. Landscape and social structure of the Lower Austrian / Styrian Wechsel-region: once turnstile of the Austro-Hungarian member-states, today centre of the European Union. For the first time a conscious differentiation between measures in triple metre (3/4) and duple metre (2/4) both with yodels and yodel-songs, thus showing its stylistic influence.
