    Description: The publication entitled "Vergangenheit, die nicht vergeht. Das Gedächtnis der Shoah in Frankreich seit 1945 im Medium Film" (A past, that doesn't pass. Holocaust Memory in France since 1945 in the Media Film) explores the basic transformations of the Holocaust-memory in France on the basis of French fiction films that are to be identified as part of cinematography of the Holocaust. The chosen approach that can be described as a history of memory referring to models of collective memory in cultural science studies. The aim is to specify the change of collective memory at the level of the particular filmic narratives and - by doing so - to identify and to analyze the long term development and ruptures in the French culture of remembrance since 1945. The empiric part of this study is preceded by methodological reflections that on the one hand permit a clear and differentiating application of the terms used in the current cultural studies of collective memory. On the other hand this chapter should help to conceive the material of research "Fiction Film" as primal source for historical science. The investigation is divided into five chronological parts and involves altogether a sample of 50 films into the general study before electing cases for deeper analyses.

Das Gedächtnis der Shoah in Frankreich seit 1945 im Medium Film" erforscht anhand französischer Spielfilme - die als Teil einer Kinematografie der Shoah ausgemacht werden können - die grundlegenden Transformationen des Gedächtnisses der Shoah am Beispiel Frankreich. Mit einem gedächtnisgeschichtlichen Ansatz, der sich an den kulturwissenschaftlichen Modellen des kollektiven Gedächtnisses orientiert, konkretisiert die Arbeit den Wandel des Gedächtnisses anhand der jeweiligen filmischen Narrative und verfolgt auf diese Weise Langzeitentwicklungen und Brüche in der französischen Erinnerungskultur zwischen 1945 und heute. Dem empirischen Arbeitsteil sind theoretische und methodische Überlegungen vorgeschaltet, die einerseits einen eindeutigen und differenzierten Zugriff auf das Begriffsrepertoire der aktuellen kulturwissenschaftlichen Gedächtnisforschung erlauben und zugleich das Untersuchungsmaterial "Spielfilm" als Primärquelle der Geschichtswissenschaft fassbar bzw. bearbeitbar machen. Die Untersuchung gliedert sich in fünf chronologisch gereihte Abschnitte und bezieht insgesamt ein Corpus von 50 Filmen in die allgemeine Fragenstellung ein, bevor nach dem Prinzip des Fallbeispiels einzelne Filme einer genaueren Analyse unterzogen werden.

    Description: In publishing this book, an early version of which was first published under the auspices of the Academy of Athens, the French School at Athens highlights the research work of Aspasia Louvi-Kizi, an eminent specialist in the Frank and Byzantine Peloponnese, whose work reveals all of the complexity of the architectural forms, influences and models at work in the monuments of the medieval Byzantine city of Mystras. Out of all of the architecture created by the despotic couple formed by Manuel Cantacuzène (1349-1380) and his wife Isabelle de Lusignan, who were instrumental in turning Mystras into a centre of power, Aspasia Louvi-Kizi focuses on two of the city’s most iconic monuments, the monasteries of Peribleptos and Pantanassa, proposing a new history of their construction. Their architecture incorporates elements of Frank art, meaning western or gothic art, which were foreign to the local Byzantine tradition. The gothic aspect of Mystras’ architecture, as distinct from the Franco-Byzantine influences in the neighbouring crusader principality of Achaea, has more to do with Western art in Cyprus, and its introduction by Isabelle to the Peloponnese was to prove decisive. The Western elements that decorate the facades of clocks and towers, combined with the Byzantine features to constitute a concrete expression of the despotic couple’s pro-Western politics, in line with the imperial politics of Constantinople at the time. In the fragmented and multipolar world of the Eastern Mediterranean on the eve of the Ottoman conquest, this book highlights the role Mystras played as a centre of power in the region and, in doing so, contributes to a fresh take on the city as a whole. By continuing the international conversation about a renowned site, the French School at Athens shows its commitment to a multi-layered approach that reveals the complexity of the interactions at work in the history of the Greek world in transition.

    Description: The question of how to maintain the continuity of diplomacy while developing democracy without military intervention is an old and new issue. The challenge can be described as a dilemma between democracy and diplomatic coherence. This dilemma is not unique to the twenty-first century; it has been a constant challenge to the development of democracy. In non-Western countries, democratisation originated in the nineteenth century and has had many successes and failures. After the Russo-Japanese War, political parties began to take power in Japan. The best embodiment of diplomacy in Japan's emerging democracy—the development of parliamentary democracy and mass-based democracy—is Shidehara Kijūrō (1872–1951), who served as foreign minister from 1924 to 1927 and from 1929 to 1931, and was prime minister from 1945 to 1946. As a diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shidehara had long grappled with the issue of how to ensure diplomatic coherence in modern Japan, which was becoming increasingly democratic. Although Shidehara succeeded to some extent in promoting diplomacy in cooperation with the US and the UK under party politics, the rise of the military after the Manchurian Incident forced him to retire for a period. However, after the Pacific War, Shidehara became prime minister of the US-occupied Japan and attempted to restore cooperative diplomacy under party politics. Shidehara came to the conclusion that the way to achieve both democracy and diplomatic coherence was through nonpartisan diplomacy towards peace. This book examines the tension between diplomacy and democracy, focusing on Shidehara’s life and exploring modern Japan’s footsteps. Shidehara was undoubtedly one of Japan’s most important diplomatic figures.

Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi is the result of the discovery of unpublished documentation on the trials - only partly known - against the abacus master Amedeo Landi, who taught the Milanese merchants at the Broletto. This is an exceptional case not only because only one witness to the activity of the Milanese inquisitorial court in the Middle Ages (whose documentation has been entirely lost) was known until now, but also because of the role of the ecclesiastical court and its officials. The wealth of information and themes has prompted a team effort by the professors of the Department of Historical Studies to clarify the many aspects (political, religious, economic, documentary) of an event that shows the vitality of 15th-century Milan, in which the protagonist, the teacher Amedeo Landi, in an attempt to protect his students, clashes with the most important preacher of his time, Brother Bernardino of Siena, whose canonisation process is temporarily blocked precisely to shed light on the Milanese episode.

Si tratta di un caso eccezionale non solo perché finora si conosceva un solo testimone dell’attività del tribunale inquisitoriale milanese nel medioevo (la cui documentazione è andata interamente perduta), ma anche per il ruolo del tribunale ecclesiastico e dei suoi funzionari. La ricchezza delle informazioni e dei temi ha suggerito un lavoro d’équipe dei docenti del Dipartimento di studi storici per chiarire i molteplici aspetti (politici, religiosi, economici, documentari) di una vicenda che mostra la vitalità della Milano quattrocentesca, in cui il protagonista, il maestro Amedeo Landi, nel tentativo di tutelare i suoi studenti si scontra con il più importante predicatore del suo tempo, frate Bernardino da Siena, il cui processo di canonizzazione viene momentaneamente bloccato proprio per fare luce sull’episodio milanese.

    Description: The art of printing with movable type made its appearance in Perugia -then as now, the heart of Italy- in 1471, when the city was under the sway of Braccio Baglioni. Perugia was home to an important university which had been attracting students from all over Europe for more than a century. They found hospitality in two colleges, of which the ‘Sapienza Vecchia’, in particular, was accustomed to accommodating students from abroad. The colleges were themselves instrumental in assisting the work of the earliest printers, all of them foreigners; their enterprise flourished for about fifteen years before strong competition from larger printing centres, notably Venice, took control of the Perugian book market. A second phase in local book production started at the turn of the century under the aegis of two major players, the Cartolari family and Bianchino dal Leone. The history of the book in Perugia is characterized by a quality and originality which is not reflected in the modest quantities produced there, and the major bibliographers have always taken an interest in it. All that and more can be found in this book, the outcome of lengthy research based on detailed analysis of all known editions and archival documents, including a number of new discoveries.

    Description: Souterrains have in the past been the object of both varied and fanciful inter­pretations. Considered at different times to be places of refuge or worship, they have been attribued to periods ranging from pre-history to the French Revolu­tion. The present study, first written as a doctoral thesis, examines94 souterrains in the Limousin region and analyses their geographical and historical significance. Research has included excavation of the Bois-du-Mont souterrain at Bessines-sur-Gartempe in the Haute-Vienne depart­ment. The result of the study proves that these underground chambers are related to rural settlement during IXth to XIIIth centuries. Archaeology provides firm evidence for when these structures were tunnelled, occupied and abandoned. The disciplined methodological approach of this work is exemplary in a field where scientific analysis has so far been vir­tually non-existent.

Dans ce sens, il répond à la nécessité de réévaluer l'histoire des nations occidentales afin d'en éclairer les racines étrangères et les dettes culturelles. Accepter que notre histoire soit aussi celle des autres constitue assurément un défi de taille pour l'ego-citoyen du XXIe siècle.

Ce dernier ouvrage s’intéresse aux statuts « vus de l’extérieur » c’est-à-dire au rapport entre le texte statutaire et sa mise en jeu dans des pratiques sociales concrètes, mais aussi à la manière dont les acteurs médiévaux se posent la question de l’usage de la norme, aux divers moments documentaires où ils font référence ou allèguent explicitement les statuts dans leurs pratiques. Le but est de repérer, d’analyser et d’étudier la manière dont les normes statutaires se sont diffusées – ou pas –, ont été appliquées – ou pas – dans les pratiques politiques, économiques et sociales de la commune : comment ont-elles été validées, reproduites, conservées, diffusées ?     Description: The first comprehensive catalogue of the Getty Museum’s significant collection of French Rococo ébénisterie furniture. This catalogue focuses on French ébénisterie furniture in the Rococo style dating from 1735 to 1760. These splendid objects directly reflect the tastes of the Museum’s founder, J. Paul Getty, who started collecting in this area in 1938 and continued until his death in 1976. The Museum’s collection is particularly rich in examples created by the most talented cabinet masters then active in Paris, including Bernard van Risenburgh II (after 1696–ca. 1766), Jacques Dubois (1694–1763), and Jean-François Oeben (1721–1763). Working for members of the French royal family and aristocracy, these craftsmen excelled at producing veneered and marquetried pieces of furniture (tables, cabinets, and chests of drawers) fashionable for their lavish surfaces, refined gilt-bronze mounts, and elaborate design. These objects were renowned throughout Europe at a time when Paris was considered the capital of good taste. The entry on each work comprises both a curatorial section, with description and commentary, and a conservation report, with construction diagrams. An introduction by Anne-Lise Desmas traces the collection’s acquisition history, and two technical essays by Arlen Heginbotham present methodologies and findings on the analysis of gilt-bronze mounts and lacquer.

    Description: In 1907, the city of Heredia became the epicenter of the most important religious conflict experienced by Costa Rica in the 20th century. A complaint that the theory of evolution was being taught in the Lyceum (i.e. secondary school) of that city, triggered an increasingly intense confrontation between the Catholic parishioners and the circle of young radical intellectuals articulating around the writer and educator Roberto Brenes Mesén. In the course of this process, Costa Rican society, to the alarm of the government of Cleto González Víquez, was the scene of popular mobilizations in defense of the faith, excommunications and burning of impious texts, while Catholic morality was systematically questioned based on sexual abuse attributed to priests. For a moment, it seemed that the country had gone back in time, and that the ghosts of 1884 were present.

Alhora, la voluntat de sobreviure física i moralment, que va ser una voluntat política, i els mecanismes i estratègies que van fer que molts ho aconseguissin, des de l’ajut de fora i la solidaritat a dins, fins a la capacitat de cadascú per mantenir alguna il·lusió i la fe en el futur.

    Description: The different theoretical notions and practices of the relations between the state and religious communities in early modern Europe constitute one of the most interesting problems in historiography. Moving away from a simple «toleration» versus «non-toleration» dichotomy, the author sets out to analyse the inter-confessional relations in selected European territories in a «longue duree» perspective, between Reformation and Enlightenment. Outlining the relations between the state and the different Churches (confessions) in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Holy Roman Empire of Germany, and the Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of «free» (non-absolutist) composite states, where the particularly complex process of defining the raison d’etat determined the level of religious toleration that was politically feasible and socially acceptable.

    Description: C’est sur un espace utilisé depuis la fin du ixe siècle, occupé aux environs de l’an mil par une étonnante construction de bois à sol de béton et à vocation funéraire, que s’implante au xiie siècle la nouvelle cuisine de l’abbaye Saint-Philibert de Tournus. Lié au réfectoire voisin, le bâtiment empiète à l’époque sur des niveaux de circulation extérieure. Sa conception architecturale est ambitieuse, avec un plan centré sur un octogone entouré de vastes cheminées à contrecœur semi-circulaire qui évoque des modèles de l’ouest de la France - disparus pour la plupart, à l’exception ou presque de la cuisine de Fontevraud en Anjou. Toutefois, au contraire de ces exemples connus uniquement pour leur architecture, c’est la conservation en place des dépôts d’utilisation intérieurs, compressés à force d’accumulation et de piétinements, qui fait la richesse du spécimen tournusien, illustrant de façon saisissante le quotidien de cette cuisine jusqu’au milieu du xvie siècle. Pendant quatre siècles, c’est autour de grandes langues de cendres témoignant d’une cuisson dans la braise, étalées depuis les quatre foyers jusqu’au milieu de la pièce, que se concentre l’essentiel de l’activité. Les postes de préparation sont trahis par autant de tas de déchets spécialisés : coquilles d’œufs, fragments d’os, écailles de poisson… Une conduite d’eau et un drain de pierres traversent la pièce, portiques ou paravents de bois sont déplacés sans cesse. La permanence de déchets de consommation carnée sur le même site depuis la fin du ixe siècle, l’abondance des restes de poisson dans la cuisine, permettent de retracer l’évolution de l’approvisionnement et de l’alimentation des moines et de leurs familiers laïcs. Quant aux nombreux fragments de poteries, également présents depuis les premiers niveaux, ils offrent sur huit siècles, avec d’autres sites tournusiens, un référentiel de productions en usage dans la région. À cela s’ajoutent quelques restes d’ustensiles en métal, verre ou pierre, tels cette probable tête de robinet des xiie/xiiie siècles ou ce mortier décoré du xive, retrouvé cassé au fond d’une cheminée : ils éclairent, plus ponctuellement, d’autres aspects de la préparation culinaire ou du service de la table. De tout point de vue, en plein contexte monastique, le matériel recueilli trahit les usages d’une population aristocratique. Tels sont les apports d’une fouille minutieuse à l’emplacement de cet édifice crucial de l’abbaye médiévale, un peu oublié à Tournus depuis sa destruction au xviie siècle, mais ressuscité par cet ouvrage finement documenté.

I argue that entertainment in vaudevilles was shaped between the perception of difference and similarity, between human trafficking, covert prostitution, anti-Semitism and nationalism. Ultimately, my research shows how a space for Jewish-non-Jewish people was created in the coinciding of the mass migration movement and the emerging mass culture between the Habsburg Monarchy and the United States.

Ainsi, dans le Sud marocain, Moulay Ahmed el Hiba, fils d’un marabout ouest-saharien (Ma el Aïnin), se fait proclamer sultan du Jihad en 1912 ; une première fois à Tiznit, la seconde à Marrakech. Ces événements ont donné naissance à un mouvement qui pendant plus de vingt ans (1912-1934) symbolisera pour ces populations berbères et ouest-sahariennes la résistance à l’avancée inéluctable des troupes coloniales françaises et espagnoles. Fondée sur une analyse croisée d’archives inédites, aussi bien françaises que marocaines, l’auteur fait la lumière sur un événement fondateur de la conquête coloniale du Maroc. Mythifiée, récupérée ou occultée, la figure fondatrice du mouvement hibiste est encore aujourd’hui le sujet d’un conflit mémoriel ayant pour objet l’Ouest saharien.

De nombreuses campagnes de fouilles ont fait d'elle une des spécialistes reconnus de la castellologie, l'étude scientifique des châteaux médiévaux. Cette passion de l'archéologie, elle l'a transmise à de nombreux étudiants. Mais elle ne s'est pas contentée de fouiller, elle a toujours voulu replacer ce qu'elle découvrait dans le cadre plus large de la recherche historique, associant ainsi l'archéologie à l'histoire.

    Description: This chapter examines the writings of the renowned late-eighteenth-century Moroccan ambassador Ibn Uthmân Al-Meknassî, the first known traveller from his country to leave an account of European quarantine as experienced during his two diplomatic missions in Spain’s Ceuta (1779) and Malta’s Valletta (1782). It shows that quarantine, on the one hand, acted as a marker of otherness by which Ibn Othman was identified as a Muslim, though this was not a uniform process, owing to the fact that significant differences existed in the degree of alterity experienced in Spain and Malta, and indeed other parts of the Mediterranean. The subjective opinion on quarantine, on the other hand, was also one of the means through which Ibn Uthmân situated himself within Makhzen (Moroccan government) elites at a time when a division between those who declared themselves in favour of European-style modernisation and those who advocated a rejection of European novelties was already visible.

    Description: "An Equal Burden forms the first scholarly study of the Army Medical Services in the First World War to focus on the roles and experiences of the men of the ranks of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). These men, through their work as stretcher bearers and orderlies, provided a range of labour, both physical and emotional, in aid of the sick and wounded. They were not professional medical caregivers, yet were called upon to provide medical care, however rudimentary; they served in uniform, under military discipline, yet were forbidden, as non-combatants, from carrying weapons. Their service as men in wartime, was thus unique. Structured both chronologically and thematically, this study examines both the work that RAMC rankers undertook and its importance to the running of the chain of medical evacuation. It additionally explores the gendered status of these men within the medical, military and cultural hierarchies of a society engaged in total war, locating their service within the context of that of doctors, female nurses and combatant servicemen. Through close readings of official documents, personal papers, and cultural representations, both verbal and visual, it argues that the ranks of the RAMC formed a space in which non-commissioned servicemen, through their many roles, defined and redefined medical caregiving as men’s work in wartime."

    Description: Aux xvie et xviie siècles, l’ordre européen était parfois menacé par des crises d’origine régionale. Ces désordres venaient des initiatives scandaleuses d’acteurs politiques habituellement peu présents sur la scène internationale (municipalités, institutions provinciales, seigneurs locaux). Pour résoudre des conflits internes, parfois contre leur propre souverain, ces acteurs n’hésitaient pas à appeler des puissances étrangères à leur secours, dans des logiques de solidarités politico-religieuses internationales. Les « affaires de Provence» (1580-1598) permettent de comprendre le fonctionnement de ce type de crises. Au plus fort des guerres de Religion en France, les catholiques de Provence appelèrent à leur secours le duc de Savoie, le grand-duc de Toscane, les papes et le roi d’Espagne. Parce que la Provence avait une position stratégique entre Barcelone et Gênes, d’autres puissances intervinrent à leur tour: l’Angleterre, l’Empire ottoman, le duché de Lorraine et la République de Venise. À partir d’une étude minutieuse des événements, ce livre mène une réflexion approfondie sur les défis stratégiques, intellectuels et rhétoriques d’une situation vécue à l’époque comme un désordre international, en raison de la marge de manœuvre subversive acquise par des acteurs ordinairement faibles.

    Description: On 24 May 1966, eight hundred men of the 5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, landed at Nui Dat, in Viet Cong territory. For the next 12 months they were faced with the task of restoring peace, civil law and regular commerce to the Vietnamese of Phuoc Tuy province. This book is a detailed record of those months in the monsoon jungles—of the problems that were faced and the solutions that were found. Captain O’Neill’s position as battalion intelligence officer enabled him to view the war from the standpoint of the battalion as a whole. However, he does not omit description of personal feelings—towards the Viet Cong, the jungle environment and the Vietnamese people, as well as the other Allied forces involved in the war. Most of the book was written on the spot in Vietnam. On operations or at Battalion Headquarters, Captain O’Neill jotted down details of the war against the Viet Cong, putting the events of each day in order, often in the small hours of the following morning. Thus not only is this a factual account of the 5th Battalion’s activities over the year; it is also a vivid and compelling picture of the war in Vietnam from the soldier’s point of view.

Quelques noms ont échappé à l'usure du temps. Gabrielle Petit ou Édith Cavell en Belgique, Léon Trulin, Eugène Jacquet, Louise de Bettignies, en France du Nord, offrent des exemples de ce patriotisme qui agit de part et d'autres de la frontière. Cette publication est le fruit des recherches menées par des historiens français et belges qui ont confronté leurs analyses au cours de la cinquième journée d'études bisannuelles tenue, en partenariat la ville et le Musée de la Résistance de Bondues, en janvier 2010.

    Description: Entre le XIIIe et le XVIe siècle, dans les régions de la Méditerranée occidentale, princes, grands seigneurs, prélats et hommes d’affaires ont aimé décorer richement l’intérieur de leurs demeures. Ils y ont fait entrer l’image, précurseurs d’une longue histoire des espaces domestiques. On redécouvre aujourd’hui, à la faveur de restaurations, le foisonnant décor des plafonds, plus rarement celui des murs. Ce sont des centaines, des milliers d’images inédites qui nous parviennent et révèlent un Moyen Âge profane presque inconnu. Parmi la luxuriance des corniches et moulures où s’enroulent des rubans ou s’épanouissent fleurs et feuillages, les planchettes glissées entre les solives ont reçu des peintures dont la variété thématique nous ouvre une nouvelle part de l’imaginaire de ces siècles. La rigueur du programme héraldique voisine avec un monde animal souvent fantastique, mais aussi domestique, familier, ou exotique. Ici et là, des saynètes montrent des personnages humains, au jeu, en fête, au travail (fort peu), ou au combat. Ici, la veine est raffinée, là, d’une truculence comique. Cet ouvrage parcourt, pour la première fois, toutes les régions méditerranéennes qui ont participé de ce goût pour les charpentes peintes, trace la chronologie de leur histoire, observe les traits communs de leur inspiration et fait ressortir les nuances : la Renaissance et l’Antique s’expriment en même temps que la drôlerie des fabliaux.

His private papers were destroyed when the Red Army advanced towards Berlin in spring 1945. The purpose of the book is to reconstruct the documents that got lost. The editor collected about 2000 pieces, mostly unpublished, in a number of archives, among them the Archives of the German Foreign Ministry and of the Imperial Chancellery in Berlin. The documents show Bethmann Hollweg in a new light. They testify that he is one of the most high-standing political figures of 20th-century German and European history.

    Description: Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg, Reichskanzler von 1909 bis 1917, gilt als eine der umstrittensten Figuren der Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sein Privatnachlass in Hohenfinow nordöstlich von Berlin wurde beim Vormarsch der Roten Armee 1945 vernichtet. Ziel der Edition ist es, die verschollenen Dokumente zu rekonstruieren. Etwa 2000 Stück, die meisten unveröffentlicht, konnten in verschiedenen Archiven ausfindig gemacht werden, z. B. im Politischen Archiv des Auswärtigen Amtes und im Bundesarchiv Berlin. Sie korrigieren das Bild dieses in der deutschen und internationalen Geschichtswissenschaft zumeist verkannten Kriegskanzlers in zahlreichen wesentlichen Zügen. Bethmann Hollweg verfügte über einen tiefen Blick in die Bewegungen der Zeit. Diesen ausgeprägten Vorausblick hatten in der neueren deutschen Geschichte neben ihm nur ganz wenige Kanzler wie Bismarck und Adenauer.

En rééditant les Principes régénérateurs du systême social, opuscule publié en pluviôse an III (janvier-février 1795), peu de temps avant la déportation de l’auteur à Cayenne, on souhaite ici éclairer un moment essentiel dans l’élaboration de la « synthèse républicaine ». C’est aussi « une nouvelle manière d’écrire l’histoire de la Révolution française » (Michel Vovelle). Un retour critique au texte met en lumière, d’une part, l’acculturation d’un révolutionnaire de premier plan, d’autre part, les thèmes récurrents du discours jacobin. L’essai de Billaud-Varenne est, en effet, une expression du projet montagnard d’« institutions civiles ». Projet d’un lien social pour « mettre en action la morale » et « la donner pour base à la politique », espérance d’un nouvel espace public de réciprocité fraternelle où la citoyenneté compte au rang des droits naturels.     Description: Since 2017, the United States and Europe—among many other refugee-hosting countries—have made significant changes in their refugee policies. New visa restrictions, travel bans, and other regulations were imposed by national governments. At the local level, towns and cities responded in different ways: some resisted national policy by declaring themselves “sanctuary cities”, while others supported exclusionary policies. These different responses influenced refugees’ ability to settle and become integrated. The Refugees in Towns (RIT) project at Tufts University explores local urban integration experiences, drawing on the knowledge and perspectives of refugees and citizens in towns around the world. Since 2017, more than 30 RIT case studies have deepened our local knowledge about the factors that enable or obstruct integration, and the ways in which migrants and hosts co-exist, adapt, and struggle with integration. In this Special Issue, seven articles explore urban integration in towns in Europe (Frankfurt-Rödelheim, Germany; Newcastle, UK; Ambertois, France; Italy’s cities; and Belgrade, Serbia) and in North America: Bhutanese refugee-hosting US cities, and Antigonish, Canada. The papers explore how refugees and citizens interact; the role of officials and politicians in enabling or obstructing integration; the social, economic, and cultural impact of migration; and the ways—inclusive or exclusive—locals have responded.

    Description: This chapter explores the transmission of tales of the supernatural during the very long eighteenth century (between c.1660 and c.1832). A genre of publications on this subject which have not been studied are those anthologies of supposedly true stories, usually relating to named people and places and sometimes dated, often each numbered separately, with relatively little discussion of their authenticity or significance, beyond perhaps a brief preface defending the reality of the world of spirits. A series of entrepreneurial publishers, mostly operating from Paternoster Row in London, experimented with anthologising these stories in varied combinations. Any attempt to analyse the stories must begin by unravelling the publishing history by which they were transmitted and (not fully studied here) modified and retold, as well as re-interpreted.

    Description: Ce volume rassemble une série de contributions qui ont en commun d’aborder un vieux sujet - le tropisme italien de François Ier - d’une façon originale, dans la mesure où y sont discutées les formes que prirent les relations entre Royaume de France et péninsule italienne à partir d’une perspective italienne. Ce qui est au cœur de l’analyse, ce sont donc moins ici les ambitions du souverain français que la nécessaire adaptation de celles-ci à une réalité italienne complexe et polymorphe. Il s’agit de rendre compte de l’entrelacs de situations juridiques et territoriales aussi diverses qu’anciennes, bouleversées, qui plus est, par des guerres incessantes qui leur confèrent une certaine fragilité. Les guerres modernes, marquées par une intensité, une rapidité et une violence inédites, frappent les contemporains et les obligent à repenser les relations entre petites et grandes puissances au nom des rapports de forces, chacune ayant sa place dans un équilibre international chancelant où la péninsule italienne est alors le premier champ clos de la rivalité entre Valois et Habsbourg. Tour à tour, la Lombardie, la Vénétie, la Savoie, la Ligurie, la Toscane, le Duché d’Urbino, les États de l’Église, le Royaume de Naples comme celui de Sicile deviennent ainsi autant de cas permettant de rendre compte de l’incessante adaptation d’une politique française qui doit évoluer au rythme des défaites militaires successives de l’armée royale. En définitive, c’est moins l’expulsion des Français d’Italie et le renoncement à leurs prétentions outremonts qui sont le sujet de ce livre collectif que la capacité toujours renouvelée du Roi à inventer une nouvelle forme de « politique italienne », au gré de la changeante « qualité des temps » (Machiavel) et de celles des États.

    Description: Les relations entre les États-Unis et l’Unesco ont toujours été complexes comme le démontre l’étude des 20 premières années de celles-ci. Lors de la création de l’Unesco quelques Américains ont énormément travaillé pour que cette Institution spécialisée des Nations- Unis existe. Leur rôle et leur apport sont ici soigneusement mis en évidence. Or, les premières déceptions arrivent rapidement car, à tort, du côté de Washington, on espérait voir l’Organisation participer efficacement à la lutte contre le communisme. Néanmoins, à la fin des années 1950, l’Unesco connaît un regain de faveur auprès du gouvernement américain. Et si l’hégémonie financière américaine à l’Unesco n’a jamais fait de doute, sa domination politique est mise en cause dès les premières années. Les États-Unis vont quitter l’Unesco en 1984, quand la première génération d’Américains, fondateurs de l’Unesco et fidèles malgré les déceptions a, depuis longtemps, quitté la scène politique.     Description: Si l’histoire traditionnelle de l’hérésie au Moyen Âge s’est longtemps confondue avec celle des exclus de la société, l’approche récente se focalise davantage sur les diverses autorités qui, au coeur du pouvoir, élaborèrent la norme religieuse : l’hérésie n’existe que parce que l’orthodoxie en a d’abord décidé. Il reste que, loin de se présenter comme une essence immuable, elle s’impose tout au long du Moyen Âge comme un concept et une qualification d’une très grande plasticité. L’extension progressive du domaine de l’hérésie à de nombreuses formes de dissidence finit par lui assurer le statut d’un crime englobant. Cette enquête collective repose sur la conviction que c’est encore en se situant aux marges de l’hérésie, au contact d’activités répréhensibles voisines, telles que l’usure, la sorcellerie ou encore la rébellion politique, que l’on peut le mieux saisir les principes et les mécanismes de la fabrique de l’hérésie.

    Description: Qu’on l’appelle « D-Day », « Jour J », « 6 Juin » ou « Débarquement », nulle autre précision n’est nécessaire pour évoquer l’offensive alliée en Normandie en 1944, alors même que de nombreuses opérations militaires de ce type ont été menées au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et que le sort de l’Allemagne nazie s’est joué sur le front de l’Est. Quelles sont les raisons qui expliquent que cette bataille – une parmi tant d’autres qui ont émaillé les conflits du xxe siècle – a d’emblée revêtu une dimension historique pour les contemporains ? Pourquoi précisément cette opération militaire est-elle désormais régulièrement commémorée par autant de chefs d’État sous le regard des télévisions du monde entier ? Comment expliquer le statut si particulier acquis par cet événement au fil des décennies, jusqu’au projet d’inscription des plages du Débarquement au patrimoine de l’Unesco ? En revenant à la dramatisation des enjeux d’une bataille annoncée près de quatre années à l’avance, mais aussi aux ressorts politiques, idéologiques, économiques et culturels qui ont contribué à transcender l’événement en épopée, cet ouvrage s’interroge sur la quête d’identité de chacun des acteurs nationaux à travers l’évolution de leur mémoire. Ainsi peut-on mieux comprendre la surprenante transformation de l’épisode guerrier en symbole universel de paix et de liberté.
