    Description: This book addresses the question of vigilance in the face of an epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century, based on the example of the fight against the plague in the French Mediterranean. Because of its trans-Mediterranean trade, this region was particularly exposed to the risk of plague so that it sought to protect itself with concrete measures such as quarantine. ; Cet ouvrage s’intéresse au risque et à la vigilance face à la peste sur la côte méditerranéenne française dans la première moitié du 18e siècle. Entre 1720 et 1722, une terrible épidémie de peste frappe Marseille, la Provence, le Comtat-Venaissin et une partie du Languedoc, causant environ 100'000 décès. Aussi dramatique soit-elle, cette épidémie constitue une exception durant la première moitié du 18e siècle. La première partie de ce travail analyse les rapports entre vigilance, espace et communication et met en évidence une prévention qui s’exerce tant de manière transméditerranéenne que de manière interne au royaume de France. Une véritable «bureaucratie sanitaire» se met en place. La deuxième partie étudie les normes et les pratiques de la vigilance sanitaire, tant sur un plan politico-sanitaire (quarantaines des navires, des passagers et des marchandises) que sur un plan religieux (processions et prières pour endiguer la maladie). Enfin, la dernière partie se limite à la peste de 1720-1722 et illustre le passage d’une vigilance préventive à une vigilance réactive en s’intéressant aux «acteurs de la peste» et aux attitudes et tactiques développées face au fléau épidémique.

    Description: The nineteenth century Bourgeoisie in the rural French Jura were not what you might expect. In sometimes delicate, sometimes down-to-earth language, they candidly discuss the running of the vineyards, the sex lives of the housemaids, their sensitivity to smells, their concerns about money or their relations with the neighbours in the farm or chateau next door. Men and women both escape from received gender roles, often far from traditional standards. Refusing to face the upheavals of the nineteenth century, they remain attached to an immutable past thus putting themselves in danger. Drawing from private correspondence, the author reveals its microhistory.

    Description: Claude-Pierre Molard is a key figure in technology at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. He was the first administrator of the Conservatoire des arts et métiers. To date, there has been no in-depth study of his career, from his native Jura to the École d'artillerie de La Fère, nor of his many functions, since he participated in all the technological institutions created since the end of the Ancien Régime. But more than a technologist, Molard was a practitioner and promoter of technology at a time when the idea of progress was a subject of political and social interest. Through this synthesis, an incarnate history of technical policies is proposed.

    Description: The French Revolution undertook to rationalize the right of ownership by including it in land ownership. However, the country's situation forces us to tolerate uses that form the basis of the relationship with the land. The definition of a new tax system, with the tax registry as a reference, encourages the valuation of the owner of the land, which the censal suffrage benefits until 1848. However, from Corsica to the North, from Brittany to Alsace, from the Pyrenees to the Ardennes, living environments present specificities that are difficult to satisfy the desires of promoters of private land rights. Until the 1960s, this conflictual relationship was the matrix for the definition of farming.

    Description: Peu de membres du corps préfectoral ont participé à la résistance pendant l’Occupation. Parmi ceux qui furent déportés, un nombre encore plus faible y a laissé la vie. C’est le cas d’Alfred Golliard, né en 1881. Préfet du Jura depuis 1934, il est sanctionné par le régime de Vichy en septembre 1940, puis entre dans la Résistance à Cluny. Avec 60 Clunisois(es), arrêté en février 1944, il est déporté à Mauthausen, puis transféré vers la chambre à gaz de Hartheim, où il mourra. Retraçant la vie du préfet (familier d’Herriot), sa carrière professionnelle et ses initiatives courageuses, l’ouvrage situe l’action du corps préfectoral au contact du personnel et des enjeux politiques de l’époque.

    Description: This book is the result of interdisciplinary exchanges and brings together 16 international researchers to examine the links between territorial boundaries and the organization of societies. Following a comparative approach, the authors question, from the beginnings of modern states in the 14th century to today, the effects induced by the evolutions of these delimitations from two observation fields adjacent to each other: the territories between Burgundy and Franche-Comté where all boundaries seem to disappear; those between France and Switzerland where one of the last borders between France and a State that is not a member of the European Union is established. This comparison makes possible to determine what distinguishes a state border from territorial delimitations of other kinds.
