    Description: This book addresses the question of vigilance in the face of an epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century, based on the example of the fight against the plague in the French Mediterranean. Because of its trans-Mediterranean trade, this region was particularly exposed to the risk of plague so that it sought to protect itself with concrete measures such as quarantine. ; Cet ouvrage s’intéresse au risque et à la vigilance face à la peste sur la côte méditerranéenne française dans la première moitié du 18e siècle. Entre 1720 et 1722, une terrible épidémie de peste frappe Marseille, la Provence, le Comtat-Venaissin et une partie du Languedoc, causant environ 100'000 décès. Aussi dramatique soit-elle, cette épidémie constitue une exception durant la première moitié du 18e siècle. La première partie de ce travail analyse les rapports entre vigilance, espace et communication et met en évidence une prévention qui s’exerce tant de manière transméditerranéenne que de manière interne au royaume de France. Une véritable «bureaucratie sanitaire» se met en place. La deuxième partie étudie les normes et les pratiques de la vigilance sanitaire, tant sur un plan politico-sanitaire (quarantaines des navires, des passagers et des marchandises) que sur un plan religieux (processions et prières pour endiguer la maladie). Enfin, la dernière partie se limite à la peste de 1720-1722 et illustre le passage d’une vigilance préventive à une vigilance réactive en s’intéressant aux «acteurs de la peste» et aux attitudes et tactiques développées face au fléau épidémique.

    Description: This book looks at the Hispanic monarchy in America through its ability to territorialize the spaces theoretically under its control. While the analysis confirms the central role played by the city, its novelty lies in the effort made to spatialize and contextualize the notions of territorialization and circulation. The Spanish Empire appears as an atomized urban archipelago, favoring the affirmation of original idiosyncratic poles captured through the polysemy of the term “caste”, often reduced to the global concept of “race” by historiography. On the contrary, this book demonstrates the importance of specific forms of experience in defining belonging, while highlighting the social construction of spaces revealed by the circulation of the idea of “caste”.

In the Iberian Peninsula, the study of Beatus de Liébana has given rise to debates on the existence of apocalyptic fears linked to the approach of the year 800 or the year 1000, or following the Muslim conquest.     Description: Ce volume, issu d’une réflexion collective menée par une équipe scientifique principalement franco-espagnole, est consacré à la question des savoirs experts et des techniques de l’expertise en matière économique au Moyen Âge. Les promoteurs ont privilégié deux approches, sociale et institutionnelle d’une part, culturelle et technique de l’autre. Certains personnages sont détenteurs d’un savoir particulier qui les met en situation de pouvoir dire ce que valent les choses. Tous ont une histoire : ils appartiennent à des institutions, ont des expériences professionnelles et des parcours qui construisent et consolident les compétences et les savoir-faire qui fondent leur expertise. Ils laissent des traces écrites, souvent difficiles à retrouver mais entretiennent toutefois avec l’écriture un rapport constant. Les apports de leur enquête doivent en effet être formalisés et ils trouvent leur place dans des textes souvent élaborés. Les experts effectuent un travail technique qui suppose à la fois des gestes et des procédures qui permettent d’estimer et de mesurer ainsi qu’une inscription dans un document qui rende compte et fasse preuve.

The studies gathered here, by French, Spanish and Italian medievalists, aim to go beyond the problems studied in the 1960s and 1980s by Michel Mollat. The process of impoverishment, working poverty, institutional and personal attitudes towards poverty and the material culture associated with it form the basis of the proposed studies. Also examined are the relationships that poverty has with work, the bonds that it forces to form or break and the survival strategies developed by those who, for one reason or another, have fallen into it.

    Description: Situé à une trentaine de kilomètres au sud-est de la petite ville aragonaise de Huesca, le site de Las Sillas à Marcén a fait l’objet depuis de nombreuses années de recherches archéologiques. Ce livre regroupe l’ensemble des découvertes réalisées tout en mettant en relation cet habitat avec les autres établissements musulmans de cette partie de l’ancienne Marche Supérieure d’al-Andalus. Les recherches ont permis d’y mettre au jour un vaste habitat rural occupé tout au long des xe-xie siècles, avant qu’il ne soit abandonné après la conquête des lieux par les troupes du roi Pierre Ier d’Aragon (1094-1104). Établi dans l’ancien district castral de Gabarda et associé à une mosquée, le site fut occupé par une communauté rurale et sa fondation témoigne de l’empreinte de la ville dans ces campagnes. Constitué par de nombreuses céramiques, des meules, des objets métalliques et des monnaies, le mobilier découvert s’est avéré à la fois abondant et varié, en particulier pour l’époque de la taifa hudide de Saragosse. Il constitue ainsi un reflet de la vie des populations rurales et de leurs activités, tout en révélant leur faible militarisation.

    Description: Based on the noble chronicles of the Trastamare period, this study seeks to establish how war was lived and narrated in Castile in the fifteenth century. The first two chapters deal with the production conditions of these texts, and address the problems that arise in the narration of the lived experience. The next three chapters show that the culture of war was widely shared among the nobility, regardless of gender or status: women and clerics were not excluded. On the other hand, the discourse on war constructs a form of nobiliary exclusivity that is manifested in the narrative treatment reserved for commoners. The last chapter finally approaches combat from an anthropological perspective, focusing on the warrior's body and emotions.

    Description: Au carrefour entre l’histoire économique et l’histoire culturelle, cet ouvrage propose une réflexion collective sur le besoin d’expertise à l’époque médiévale. Les prises de décision devaient parfois être éclairées par des hommes qui maîtrisaient mieux que d’autres les domaines en cause et étaient, de ce fait, en mesure de trouver des solutions. Cela est particulièrement vrai lorsque des questions techniques ou éthiques étaient soulevées et que des choix devaient être faits à partir de l’argumentation d’un expert. La qualité des produits, les processus de fabrication ou la mesure de leur valeur donnaient lieu à des contrôles pour lesquels il fallait des personnels à la fois compétents et forts d’une notoriété reconnue par les autorités en place : il s’agissait d’éviter ou de réprimer les fraudes, de défendre l’honneur de la ville ou celui du métier et de protéger le bien commun en garantissant le produit. Tout au long de cette époque, ont été développées des pratiques juridiques et techniques reposant sur la reconnaissance des savoirs et des compétences de l’expert, figure particulière désignée par la puissance publique. Ce livre propose une approche originale des problématiques et des questionnements rarement — voire jamais — appliqués au champ de la vie économique au Moyen Âge.

    Description: Le détroit de Gibraltar est le produit d’une longue construction historique, comme en témoignent ses appellations successives, du détroit de Gadès à la « montagne de Tariq ». Cet espace a en effet été progressivement façonné par les pouvoirs qui l’ont dominé, aussi bien à l’aide d’acteurs (gouverneurs, délégués militaires ou civils) que de territoires (cités, ports, arsenaux). Quoique le choix d’une administration propre intégrant ses deux rives ait été l’exception, les constructions impériales qui se sont succédé en Extrême Occident ont porté une attention particulière à cet espace de limites, conceptualisé autant comme charnière que comme frontière. Ce deuxième ouvrage collectif issu des travaux de l’ANR DÉTROIT questionne ainsi le rôle du Détroit dans la construction des empires dans la longue durée, de la domination punique jusqu’à la chute de Grenade.

Les réalités internationales et les rapports de force européens ont vite fait de reléguer ces projets au rang des illusions, contribuant à l’installation des régimes fasciste en Italie et salazariste au Portugal, et permettant à ceux-ci de prospérer sur le terreau des victoires mutilées et des nationalismes frustrés. À travers l’étude des expositions nationales, des participations aux expositions internationales et des foires coloniales de l’entre-deux-guerres, cet ouvrage interroge les modalités de production et de réception d’un phénomène ancré dans le xixe siècle occidental. Il prétend ainsi approfondir les connaissances dans le domaine de l’histoire de la colonisation en réévaluant la place du Portugal et de l’Italie parmi les Empires européens, tout en élargissant l’horizon des exhibition studies, longtemps centrées sur le Nord de l’Europe et des Amériques.

Der Begriff sucht den Bedeutungsgewinn und die Diversifizierung der Medien in der Gegenwart zu erfassen und damit nicht zuletzt heutige von früheren Gesellschaften abzugrenzen. Die Annahme, dass Medien in früheren Gesellschaften nicht ebenfalls eine zentrale und spezifische Rolle zukam, wäre jedoch irrig. So war das 19.     Description: Das föderale Alte Reich gilt heute wie auch im zeitgenössischen Frankreich in Vielem als vorbildlich. Guido Braun befasst sich mit seinem Bild bei den französischen Staatsmännern, Diplomaten, Juristen, Historikern und Philosophen vom Westfälischen Friedenskongress (1643/48) bis zur diplomatischen Revolution (1756). Im Mittelpunkt steht ihr Verständnis seiner politischen Strukturen. Methodisch betritt das Buch Neuland, da Übersetzungen als Geschichtsquelle herangezogen und vor dem Hintergrund einer Kulturgeschichte der Diplomatiesprachen interpretiert werden. Die französischen Übersetzungen von Reichsgrundgesetzen und Friedensverträgen stellen Dokumente ersten Ranges zur Erforschung der Vorstellungen dar, welche die Franzosen mit dem Reich verbanden und die Aufschluss über deren Selbstbild bieten. Diese Vorstellungswelten werden durch eine Analyse der zeitgenössisch in französischer Sprache publizierten Bücher über das Reich noch tiefer gehend interpretiert. Dabei werden auch umfangreiche archivalische Quellen sowie ausgewählte Propaganda- und Zeitschriften herangezogen. Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der französischen Deutschlandpolitik werden zu bestimmten Schlüsselmomenten deutlich.
