Description: The forests of the Congo Basin are the second largest tropical forest in the world. For a long time, conflicts of use have been numerous. In order to preserve its ecosystem services, the exploitation of these forests should integrate the principles of sustainable management. Information, education, training and outreach work is therefore necessary within Congolese society. University cooperation is an appropriate way to meet this need for training for all actors concerned with the resources present in the forests of Tshopo (former Province Orientale). A targeted inter-university project financed by ARES (formerly CUD) entitled "Support for the organization of a master's degree in forest management to strengthen the capacities of Congolese researchers with a view to the socio-economic recovery of the Democratic Republic of Congo - AFORCO" provided for two main activities: postgraduate training and the production of doctoral theses in disciplines relevant to forest management. The capacities of 16 experts were strengthened through a DES in sustainable forest management at the University of Kisangani (2009-2011); in December 2015, two PhD theses were presented and defended at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech in the fields of wood biology and landscape ecology. This book provides a review of the studies carried out thanks to the AFORCO project and related projects, mainly in the form of final works and PhD theses on the forest ecosystems of the Tshopo. This book is primarily intended for researchers concerned with the challenges of sustainable development in developing countries characterized by the presence of still abundant natural resources. The studies presented highlight the added value of academic cooperation, the need for long-term scientific collaborations and the potential synergies of North-South academic exchanges. / Les forêts du bassin du Congo constituent le deuxième plus grand massif de forêts tropicales au monde. Depuis longtemps, les conflits d’usages y ont été nombreux. Afin de préserver ses services écosystémiques, l’exploitation de ces forêts devrait intégrer les principes de l’aménagement durable. Un travail d’information, d’éducation, de formation et de vulgarisation s’impose donc au sein de la société congolaise. La coopération universitaire constitue un moyen approprié de répondre à ce besoin de formations au profit de tous les acteurs concernés par les ressources présentes au sein des forêts de la Tshopo (ex Province orientale). Un projet interuniversitaire ciblé financé par l’ARES (ex CUD) intitulé « Appui à l’organisation d’un master en Aménagement forestier pour le renforcement des capacités des chercheurs congolais en vue de la relance socio-économique de la République démocratique du Congo – AFORCO » prévoyait deux activités principales : une formation de troisième cycle et la réalisation de thèses de doctorat dans des disciplines pertinentes pour l’aménagement forestier. Les capacités de 16 experts ont été renforcées à travers un DES en aménagement forestier durable à l’université de Kisangani (2009-2011) ; en décembre 2015, deux thèses de doctorat ont été présentées et défendues à Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech dans les domaines de la biologie du bois et de l’écologie du paysage. Cet ouvrage donne une revue des études concrétisées grâce au projet AFORCO et des projets apparentés, principalement sous forme de travaux de fin d’études et de thèses de doctorat portant sur les écosystèmes forestiers de la Tshopo. Ce livre s’adresse d’abord aux chercheurs préoccupés par les défis du développement durable dans des pays en voie de développement caractérisés par la présence de ressources naturelles encore abondantes. Les études présentées mettent en évidence la valeur ajoutée de la coopération universitaire, la nécessité de collaborations scientifiques de longue durée et les synergies potentielles d’échanges académiques Nord-Sud.

Description: The sustainability of natural forest management in Central Africa depends on a thorough understanding of the population dynamics of commercial tree populations. These dynamics are studied in systems designed to be monitored over the long term, known as plots and trails. While the methodological approach for setting up and monitoring plots is fairly well documented, the approach for trails is less well documented. This book fills this gap by capitalizing on the experience accumulated over more than 20 years by the members of the DYNAFAC collective, a group created on the initiative of ATIBT, CIRAD, Nature+ and Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech. It is a practical and illustrated guide explaining the process necessary for the installation and monitoring of these trails. In addition to the technical procedures, the guide also assesses the costs, taking into account the economic specificities of different countries in the sub-region. By addressing all stakeholders in the development and management of Africa's forests, the book aims to promote the implementation of robust and efficient systems within everyone's reach. / La durabilité de l'aménagement des forêts naturelles d'Afrique centrale est tributaire d'une connaissance approfondie de la dynamique démographique des populations d'arbres commerciaux. Cette dynamique est étudiée dans des dispositifs destinés à être suivis sur le long terme, dénommés parcelles et sentiers. Si la démarche méthodologique d'installation et de suivi des parcelles est assez bien documentée, celle des sentiers l'est moins. Le présent ouvrage vient combler ce vide en capitalisant l'expérience accumulée depuis plus de 20 ans par les membres du collectif DYNAFAC, un collectif créé à l'initiative de l'ATIBT, du CIRAD, de Nature+ et de Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech. Il s'agit d'un guide pratique et illustré explicitant la démarche nécessaire à l'installation et au suivi de ces sentiers. Outre les procédures techniques, le guide évalue également les coûts en tenant compte des spécificités économiques de différents pays de la sous-région. En s'adressant à l'ensemble des parties prenantes de l'aménagement et de la gestion des forêts d'Afrique, l'ouvrage a pour ambition de promouvoir la mise en oeuvre de dispositifs robustes et efficients à la portée de tous.

Description: In a globalized world economy, the production and sale of cotton is a major issue for the future of a significant portion of humanity. This is particularly true in sub-Saharan Africa, where it is estimated that more than 20 million people derive the bulk of their income from cotton. Thanks to immense efforts by the private sector, the public sector and cooperation agencies, what has been called "white gold" has become the backbone of the economies of many African countries over the past thirty years. Its dissemination has been accompanied by a significant increase in the performance of production systems in savannah areas and, following the redistribution of income that it has allowed in the rural world, a notable improvement in the living conditions of the populations concerned. This undeniable success in the fight against poverty in sub-Saharan Africa is now threatened by the downward trend in world cotton fiber prices, largely caused by the subsidies granted to cotton producers in the North and by the increase in production and transportation costs, mainly linked to the continuing rise in energy prices. The search for fair, efficient and sustainable solutions to the deep crisis currently facing the African cotton industry is an issue to which our institution is particularly sensitive. Not only because of our natural interest in everything related to rural development in Africa, but also because of the long history that links Gembloux to cotton growing and the expertise acquired over the last few years by the Economics and Rural Development Unit of our institution in analyzing the functioning of the African cotton sectors. Professor Demol, who during his long and brilliant career was one of the main actors of the international recognition we have acquired in cotton research, will briefly introduce the afternoon session by talking about the almost one hundred years of history linking our Faculty to cotton in Africa. The theme chosen by the Board of Directors of our institution for this academic year 2005-2006 being "cooperation and development", it is quite natural that the theme of the African cotton crisis has been chosen for the study day which is traditionally organized within the framework of the theme year. We thought it wise to benefit from his insight as a field actor as well as from that provided by the internationally renowned specialists we invited to participate in this day to better understand the issues and challenges facing cotton growing in Africa and to identify possible solutions to overcome the crisis.

Cattle numbers have increased more than twofold, and those of small ruminants by more than threefold. Today, the region accounts for about 20% of the cattle and sheep, 33% of the goats and 81% of the dromedaries raised on the planet. That is to say a livestock population of nearly 900 million head. The book focuses on the dynamics of ruminant and equine livestock in intertropical Africa. It describes the different livestock systems found in arid and sub-humid zones and the available food resources; it discusses the local and global impacts of herbivore farming on the environment. The major socio-economic role of activities around animals and their products, and the growing consumer demand for meat and milk are highlighted. An efficient organization of the livestock-meat chains is reported, while constraints to the establishment of a dairy industry persist. Il décrit les différents systèmes d'élevage rencontrés en zones aride et subhumide et les ressources alimentaires disponibles ; il aborde les impacts locaux et globaux des élevages des herbivores sur l'environnement. Le rôle socio-économique majeur des activités autour des animaux et de leurs produits, et la demande croissante en viande et lait des consommateurs sont soulignés. Description: Agroforestry is a sustainable soil management method. It associates in time or space trees with crops and/or livestock. Thanks to this association, positive interactions are created between the different components of the system. For example, the introduction of nitrogen-fixing trees benefits food crops by playing the role of green manure. Agroforestry of trees in a crop plot also brings other benefits: - they facilitate the penetration of water into the soil, - they help fight erosion, - they draw nutrients from deep within the soil and make them available on the surface for crops, - they play the role of windbreaks, - they can provide shade in the dry season, - they can provide edible fruits, honey, timber, fuelwood, medicinal products, etc. Agroforestry is the focus of the "Agroforests for Kipushi Development" project, AFODEK, which was implemented between December 2012 and November 2017 with financial support from the European Union (DCI-FOOD/2012/294-526). Based on the experience of the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Mampu (Plateaux Batékés), three organizations, GRET, the Belgian non-profit organization Nature+ and the Centre Promotionnel du Paysannat, joined their efforts to develop an agroforestry perimeter of 2,000 hectares (ha) in an area of degraded savannahs with poor soil fertility. This technical document has been prepared by the AFODEK project to share the experience of the Kipushi agroforestry perimeter. It is intended primarily for a public of farmers or agricultural technicians. / L'agroforesterie est un mode de gestion durable des sols. Elle associe dans le temps ou dans l'espace des arbres avec des cultures et/ou l'élevage. Grâce à cette association, des interactions positives se créent entre les différentes composantes du système. Par exemple, l'introduction d'arbres fixateurs d'azote bénéficie aux cultures vivrières en jouant le rôle d'engrais vert. L'agroforesterie d'arbres dans une parcelle de culture apporte également d'autres avantages : - ils facilitent la pénétration de l'eau dans le sol, - ils permettent de lutter contre l'érosion, - ils puisent les éléments nutritifs en profondeur et les rendent disponibles en surface pour les cultures, - ils jouent le rôle de brise-vent, - ils peuvent apporter de l'ombrage en saison sèche, - ils peuvent fournir des fruits comestibles, du miel, du bois d'oeuvre, du bois de chauffe, des produits médicinaux, etc. L'agroforesterie est au coeur du projet "Agroforêts pour le développement de Kipushi", AFODEK, qui a été mis en oeuvre entre décembre 2012 et novembre 2017 grâce au soutien financier de l'Union européenne (DCI-FOOD/2012/294-526). Description: The intensification of human activities, the growing demand for animal proteins due to the population explosion and organized poaching (ivory, pangolin scales, etc.) are leading to increasing pressure on the wildlife of Central African forests. To respond to these threats, strategies are being put in place at the national and regional levels. Effective wildlife management within certified concessions contributes to the overall objective of sound and sustainable management of Central Africa's forest heritage. This guide is an operational tool for Central African loggers. It presents in a pragmatic and illustrated manner the process of developing and implementing a wildlife management plan, starting with the legislative and regulatory frameworks to be respected and ending with the evaluation of its performance. The main wildlife management and conservation measures to be implemented are described in thematic sheets. A model wildlife management plan is presented, which proposes a hierarchy for the implementation of these different measures. This book aims to improve the practices of forestry operators in terms of wildlife management and to accompany them in a process of certification of legality or sustainability. / L'intensification des activités humaines, la demande croissante en protéines animales suite à l'explosion démographique et le braconnage organisé (ivoire, écailles de pangolins, ...) entrainent une pression croissante sur la faune sauvage des forêts d'Afrique centrale. Pour répondre à ces menaces, des stratégies sont mises en place aux échelles nationales et régionales. Une gestion efficace de la faune sauvage au sein des concessions certifiées concourt à l'objectif global d'une gestion raisonnée et durable du patrimoine forestier d'Afrique centrale. Le présent guide constitue un outil opérationnel à destination des exploitants forestiers d'Afrique centrale. Il présente de manière pragmatique et illustrée la démarche d'élaboration et de mise en oeuvre d'un plan de gestion de la faune, en partant des cadres législatifs et règlementaires à respecter jusqu'à l'évaluation de sa performance. Les principales mesures de gestion et de conservation de la faune à mettre en place sont décrites dans des fiches thématiques. Un canevas modèle de plan de gestion de la faune proposant une hiérarchisation dans la mise en oeuvre de ces différentes mesures est présenté. Description: Cooking bananas and plantains are crucial productions of countries in the humid tropics. Highly energetic (110 to 120 cal/100 g), rich in minerals and vitamins, these foods meet the challenges of food security and nutrition. The forest regions of Africa, Latin America and Asia produce an average of 30 million tons per year (nearly 70% in Africa) and the average consumption is 50 to 200 kg/inhab/year. Most of the production is carried out in family farming systems, and most of it is sold locally or consumed by the farmers themselves, in the form of a wide variety of dishes, but few processed products are available on the markets. Entrepreneurs are investing in plantain production for export to the United States and Europe, and for flour production. The multiplicity of uses and the ability of plantain to adapt to various agroclimatic zones are assets of this sector. This book refers more particularly to research and production in sub-Saharan Africa. Clear, concise and well-illustrated, it presents the state of knowledge and innovations available on plantain cultivation, as well as the assets and constraints of this sector. Description: The concept of anthropization refers to those dynamics observed within landscapes and ecosystems whose cause can be related to human activities that, consequently, could be considered as disturbances of natural balances. Agricultural development, the expansion of mining operations and the growth of urban centers are typical examples. This presence of man as a disrupter of natural systems and the environmental consequences of his actions form the leitmotif of this book. The book is addressed to those interested in the unique ecosystems of the former Katanga province, particularly those around its capital, Lubumbashi, which have been characterized by strong anthropic pressure for several decades. Although the disciplines covered in this book are mainly plant biology, agronomy, and earth sciences, it provides a beautiful mapping of the realities of Katangan landscapes, which is also relevant for an environmental contextualization of studies conducted by researchers in the humanities or in the health field. This book is the result of a long-standing collaboration between Belgian universities and the University of Lubumbashi. Cette présence de l'homme comme perturbateur des systèmes naturels et les conséquences environnementales de ses actes forment le leitmotiv de cet ouvrage. Le livre s'adresse à ceux qui s'intéressent aux écosystèmes uniques de l'ancienne province du Katanga, en particulier ceux situés autour de sa capitale, Lubumbashi, caractérisés par une forte pression anthropique depuis plusieurs décennies. Malgré le fait que les disciplines porteuses de cet ouvrage se situent principalement dans les domaines de la biologie végétale, l'agronomie et les sciences de la terre, il offre une belle cartographie des réalités des paysages katangais, également pertinente pour une contextualisation environnementale d'études menées par des chercheurs en sciences humaines ou dans le domaine de la santé. Description: he Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification system aims to promote sustainable forest management. It is based on a set of standards, one of which is particularly complex to implement in Central Africa, principle 9 dealing with High Conservation Values (HCV). This principle should be interpreted at the national level to take into account the specificities of each country. Although there are already books developed by various organizations, none specifically target large forest concessions. In Cameroon, these concessions, or Forest Management Units (FMUs), represent 40% of the national forest estate. This guide aims to provide forest management actors in Cameroon with the most relevant knowledge to enable them to identify, manage and monitor High Conservation Values in FMUs. It differs from previous guides in several ways: (i) a detailed literature review is provided on the thorny subject of identifying each HCV, and the authors' opinions are highlighted; (ii) the identification process is supported by the most relevant references, avoiding the manager's search for documentation; (iii) based on their experience, the authors propose a series of threats that can affect HCVs, management measures and monitoring indicators. The approach developed is based on empirical and pragmatic methods on the one hand, and on scientific studies on the other. This book should provide an interesting basis for a solid interpretation of HCVs in Cameroon. Furthermore, although it focuses on Cameroonian FMUs, it could inspire other forest actors working in the Congo Basin. / Le système de certification FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) vise à promouvoir la gestion durable des forêts. Il repose sur un ensemble de normes dont une est particulièrement complexe à mettre en oeuvre en Afrique Centrale, le principe 9 traitant des Hautes Valeurs de Conservation (HVC). Ce principe devrait être interprété aux échelons nationaux afin de prendre en compte les spécificités de chaque pays. Bien que des ouvrages aient déjà été élaborés par diverses organisations, aucun ne cible particulièrement les grandes concessions forestières. Au Cameroun, ces concessions ou Unités Forestières d’Aménagement (UFA), représentent pourtant 40 % du domaine forestier national. Le présent guide ambitionne de fournir aux acteurs de la gestion forestière au Cameroun les connaissances les plus pertinentes afin de leur permettre d’identifier, de gérer et de suivre les Hautes Valeurs de Conservation dans les UFA. Il se démarque des précédents guides par plusieurs points : (i) une revue bibliographique détaillée est fournie sur le sujet épineux de l’identification de chaque HVC, et l’opinion des auteurs y est mise en exergue; (ii) la démarche d’identification est appuyée par les références les plus pertinentes, évitant au gestionnaire de se disperser dans sa quête de documentation; (iii) sur la base de leur expérience, les auteurs proposent une série de menaces pouvant affecter les HVC, de mesures de gestion et d’indicateurs de suivi. L’approche développée se base sur des méthodes empiriques et pragmatiques d’une part et, d’autre part, sur des études scientifiques. Cet ouvrage devrait constituer une base intéressante pour une interprétation solide des HVC au Cameroun. De plus, bien que ciblant les UFA camerounaises, il pourrait inspirer d’autres acteurs forestiers œuvrant dans le Bassin du Congo.

Aujourd’hui, la région regroupe environ 20 % des bovins et des ovins, 33 % des caprins et 81 % des dromadaires élevés sur la planète. Soit un cheptel de près de 900 millions de têtes. L’ouvrage est axé sur la dynamique des élevages des ruminants et des équidés en Afrique intertropicale.
