    Description: Published on the occasion of Hubert Houben’s 70th birthday, this volume focuses on border crossings as one of the topics dear to the jubilarian. By starting from a concept of borders as a social construct, the authors look at selected cases of transcending spatial, cultural and legal boundaries in the Middle Ages. The resulting complexity and multi-perspectivity reflects different research methods and traditions, revealing a broad spectrum of possible approaches to the topic of border crossings.

Die daraus resultierende Vielschichtigkeit und Multiperspektivität spiegeln verschiedene Ansätze und Forschungstraditionen, die in der Zusammenschau ein breites Spektrum möglicher Zugänge zur Thematik der Grenzüberschreitung aufzeigen.

Prendendo come punto di partenza un concetto di confine come costruzione sociale, le autrici e gli autori affrontano casi selezionati di scavalcamento di confini spaziali, culturali e legali durante il Medioevo. La complessità e la multiperspettività che ne derivano riflettono metodi e tradizioni di ricerca diversi, che insieme rivelano un ampio spettro di approcci possibili al tema dell’attraversamento dei confini.

    Description: This book addresses the question of vigilance in the face of an epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century, based on the example of the fight against the plague in the French Mediterranean. Because of its trans-Mediterranean trade, this region was particularly exposed to the risk of plague so that it sought to protect itself with concrete measures such as quarantine. ; Cet ouvrage s’intéresse au risque et à la vigilance face à la peste sur la côte méditerranéenne française dans la première moitié du 18e siècle. Entre 1720 et 1722, une terrible épidémie de peste frappe Marseille, la Provence, le Comtat-Venaissin et une partie du Languedoc, causant environ 100'000 décès. Aussi dramatique soit-elle, cette épidémie constitue une exception durant la première moitié du 18e siècle. La première partie de ce travail analyse les rapports entre vigilance, espace et communication et met en évidence une prévention qui s’exerce tant de manière transméditerranéenne que de manière interne au royaume de France. Une véritable «bureaucratie sanitaire» se met en place. La deuxième partie étudie les normes et les pratiques de la vigilance sanitaire, tant sur un plan politico-sanitaire (quarantaines des navires, des passagers et des marchandises) que sur un plan religieux (processions et prières pour endiguer la maladie). Enfin, la dernière partie se limite à la peste de 1720-1722 et illustre le passage d’une vigilance préventive à une vigilance réactive en s’intéressant aux «acteurs de la peste» et aux attitudes et tactiques développées face au fléau épidémique.

    Description: La diplomatie remplit une mission déterminante de légitimation au service du pouvoir : voilà une déclaration qui ferait sourire plus d’un de nos contemporains... L’histoire de la diplomatie entre les Pays-Bas et les États du Saint Empire témoigne de l’existence d’un discours idéologique adapté aux circonstances, principalement en temps de troubles. De volumineuses correspondances diplomatiques s’échangent au 16e siècle entre Madrid, Bruxelles et les princes territoriaux des Allemagnes, ce « triangle diplomatique » dont les fondements sont définis et les acteurs passés en revue. Les « lettres de courtoisie » visent à préserver les rapports de bon voisinage, de même que les échanges de nouvelles, d’une importance primordiale à cette époque de grande insécurité. Quant aux intercessions princières pour des sujets mécontents, autre exemple de la diplomatie au jour le jour, elles renvoient à des litiges commerciaux ou financiers susceptibles de nuire à l’entente mutuelle et d’entamer la prospérité générale.Les questions d’ordre militaire que soulève le recrutement de troupes de mercenaires sous les ordres de pensionnaires royaux figurent aussi parmi les grands leitmotiv des correspondances entre les Pays-Bas espagnols et le Saint Empire. Les interactions du Roi catholique Philippe II et de ses représentants à Bruxelles avec les princes allemands les plus influents, catholiques et protestants, sont étudiées devant la toile de fond de la confessionnalisation à l’échelle européenne. La Révolte des Pays-Bas a évidemment laissé de nombreuses traces dans les courriers diplomatiques, de la crise iconoclaste de l’été 1566 à l’échec des pourparlers de Cologne de 1579, en passant par l’exécution d’Egmont et de Hornes, les affrontements armés entre le duc d’Albe et Guillaume d’Orange ou la lutte contre les Gueux de mer. Dans ce contexte d’exception, la diplomatie sert encore davantage que dans ses formes quotidiennes les intérêts du pouvoir monarchique.

    Description: The image, before representing, to signify, acts and makes act. The performance of images, which this book undertakes exploration, is to be understood first of all as the evaluation of their effectiveness: what are the effects of images? It is then their agency: in what way are images living beings? It is also their performativity: as there are acts of speech, there are acts of image whose modalities can be detailed. Finally, it is their power: what can an image, including a text, for example, be incapable? 〈br〉 〈br〉 Christian image holds a special place here because, far from being a simple "Bible of illiterate "subject to the reign of the text, it permeates all aspects of the life and thought of Christian societies, from their theological and anthropological foundations - God created man in his image; the Son is the image of the Father - up to the most diverse uses of visual objects. But in the West it is not only in the Middle Ages that the images are active: this book is also devoted to the new forms of visual performances that appeared with the Renaissance or the mass-media society.

Sanfilippo remet dans leur contexte historique les discours et les débats sur ce régime, qui sont inextricablement liés aux dynamiques politiques canadiennes. Le féodalisme dans la vallée du Saint-Laurent est un essai unique dans le paysage historiographique canadien. Il est ici traduit en français pour la première fois.     Description: Latin America, the United States of America, religion, and politics are ingredients of a brew with considerable explosive power. The four terms denote factors in a complex and, for the most part, violently intertwined relationship. Historically, this relation has been shaped primarily by the Protestant mission in Latin America and its Pan-American objectives. Yet, this mission now belongs to the past. The once American religiosity of the missionaries has taken different and more charismatic forms under the conflicting conditions of life in Latin America and today is shaped in particular by the class antagonisms of the subcontinent. However, this does not mean that some evangelical organizations do not continue to represent political interests of their Northern neighbor, or that vice versa,the political religiosity of the South does not contribute to ideological struggles in the United States, either through Liberation Theology in the 1980s, or today through the solidarity with Latin American migrants. The present book visualises the logic of the inter-American entanglements by tracing and interpreting exemplary developments and conflicts, framing the narrative plot between two important religious events in 1916 and 2016.

    Description: ste libro es expresión de las investigaciones realizadas por seis integrantes de la Línea Contextos, Prácticas Políticas y Políticas Públicas como parte del Programa Posdoctoral en Ciencias Sociales, Niñez y Juventud. Los trabajos que componen el segundo libro colectivo de esta línea fueron producidos entre el 2014 y el 2017 y abordan diferentes dimensiones de las vidas de niñas, niños y jóvenes de América Latina desde una perspectiva situada que, siendo rigurosa, asume el compromiso intelectual y político de aportar a la transformación de las condiciones en las que producen sus existencias. Si bien cada uno de los seis capítulos corresponde a investigaciones singulares llevadas a cabo por cada uno de los posdoctores en tres países de América Latina (Argentina, Brasil y Colombia), estos se alimentaron de los intercambios colectivos sostenidos en el espacio de trabajo que compartimos en la Línea del Posdoctorado. De esta manera, el libro puede leerse como el encuentro de seis textos con unidad y lógica en sí mismos, pero también como obra única en la que reverberan los diálogos sostenidos en el espacio común de trabajo que construimos en estos años. En este sentido, este texto es resultado de un proceso que demandó casi dos años de debates y reelaboraciones y que pasó por diversos momentos y circunstancias antes de que se hiciera posible su publicación. Agradecemos entonces la paciencia y la dedicación de las autoras —el azar o los procesos de igualdad de género quisieron que todas las autoras fueran mujeres— así como los comentarios y aportes de los otros colegas que integran la línea, cuyos trabajos ya han sido publicados o se editarán pronto. Asimismo, queremos agradecer al equipo de trabajo del posdoctorado que radica en el Centro de Estudios de Niñez y Juventudes (Cenju) del Cinde y la Universidad de Manizales (Sandra, Daniela, Julián), a los coordinadores de las otras líneas del programa (Toya, Patricia, Karina, Silvinha, José Manuel, Héctor Fabio, Fernanda, Myriam), a Sara Victoria Alvarado, a María Camila Ospina por aceptar con generosidad hacer el prólogo, a las instituciones coeditoras y, especialmente, a Lucía Rangel, quien compartió la coordinación de la línea junto a Pablo Vommaro hasta fines del 2016, momento en el que se incorporó Alejandra Barcala a este espacio. Esperamos que esta sea una manera de integrarse, al menos por algunos momentos, a la comunidad que constituimos en el Posdoctorado desde el 2010, que se potencia día a día con la publicación de obras como esta y con los ecos y debates que pueda generar.
