    Description: In publishing this book, an early version of which was first published under the auspices of the Academy of Athens, the French School at Athens highlights the research work of Aspasia Louvi-Kizi, an eminent specialist in the Frank and Byzantine Peloponnese, whose work reveals all of the complexity of the architectural forms, influences and models at work in the monuments of the medieval Byzantine city of Mystras. Out of all of the architecture created by the despotic couple formed by Manuel Cantacuzène (1349-1380) and his wife Isabelle de Lusignan, who were instrumental in turning Mystras into a centre of power, Aspasia Louvi-Kizi focuses on two of the city’s most iconic monuments, the monasteries of Peribleptos and Pantanassa, proposing a new history of their construction. Their architecture incorporates elements of Frank art, meaning western or gothic art, which were foreign to the local Byzantine tradition. The gothic aspect of Mystras’ architecture, as distinct from the Franco-Byzantine influences in the neighbouring crusader principality of Achaea, has more to do with Western art in Cyprus, and its introduction by Isabelle to the Peloponnese was to prove decisive. The Western elements that decorate the facades of clocks and towers, combined with the Byzantine features to constitute a concrete expression of the despotic couple’s pro-Western politics, in line with the imperial politics of Constantinople at the time. In the fragmented and multipolar world of the Eastern Mediterranean on the eve of the Ottoman conquest, this book highlights the role Mystras played as a centre of power in the region and, in doing so, contributes to a fresh take on the city as a whole. By continuing the international conversation about a renowned site, the French School at Athens shows its commitment to a multi-layered approach that reveals the complexity of the interactions at work in the history of the Greek world in transition.

    Description: ste libro es expresión de las investigaciones realizadas por seis integrantes de la Línea Contextos, Prácticas Políticas y Políticas Públicas como parte del Programa Posdoctoral en Ciencias Sociales, Niñez y Juventud. Los trabajos que componen el segundo libro colectivo de esta línea fueron producidos entre el 2014 y el 2017 y abordan diferentes dimensiones de las vidas de niñas, niños y jóvenes de América Latina desde una perspectiva situada que, siendo rigurosa, asume el compromiso intelectual y político de aportar a la transformación de las condiciones en las que producen sus existencias. Si bien cada uno de los seis capítulos corresponde a investigaciones singulares llevadas a cabo por cada uno de los posdoctores en tres países de América Latina (Argentina, Brasil y Colombia), estos se alimentaron de los intercambios colectivos sostenidos en el espacio de trabajo que compartimos en la Línea del Posdoctorado. De esta manera, el libro puede leerse como el encuentro de seis textos con unidad y lógica en sí mismos, pero también como obra única en la que reverberan los diálogos sostenidos en el espacio común de trabajo que construimos en estos años. En este sentido, este texto es resultado de un proceso que demandó casi dos años de debates y reelaboraciones y que pasó por diversos momentos y circunstancias antes de que se hiciera posible su publicación. Agradecemos entonces la paciencia y la dedicación de las autoras —el azar o los procesos de igualdad de género quisieron que todas las autoras fueran mujeres— así como los comentarios y aportes de los otros colegas que integran la línea, cuyos trabajos ya han sido publicados o se editarán pronto. Asimismo, queremos agradecer al equipo de trabajo del posdoctorado que radica en el Centro de Estudios de Niñez y Juventudes (Cenju) del Cinde y la Universidad de Manizales (Sandra, Daniela, Julián), a los coordinadores de las otras líneas del programa (Toya, Patricia, Karina, Silvinha, José Manuel, Héctor Fabio, Fernanda, Myriam), a Sara Victoria Alvarado, a María Camila Ospina por aceptar con generosidad hacer el prólogo, a las instituciones coeditoras y, especialmente, a Lucía Rangel, quien compartió la coordinación de la línea junto a Pablo Vommaro hasta fines del 2016, momento en el que se incorporó Alejandra Barcala a este espacio. Los invitamos a compartir las páginas que siguen y a recorrer las experiencias de investigación y práctica intelectual que contienen. Esperamos que esta sea una manera de integrarse, al menos por algunos momentos, a la comunidad que constituimos en el Posdoctorado desde el 2010, que se potencia día a día con la publicación de obras como esta y con los ecos y debates que pueda generar.     Description: Este libro permite, entre otras cosas, acercarse a la mayor parte de los desarrollos, las tendencias y los intereses teóricos que ocupan actualmente a los cientistas sociales en América Latina. Es un mapa capaz de mostrar mucho de lo que se está haciendo en el campo de la teoría social, y capaz también de mostrar mucho de lo que queda por hacer. Uno de los rasgos más notables de este mapa es su pluralidad. Se constata aquí que las más diversas tradiciones de pensamiento transitan por nuestro continente, y que son reelaboradas por nuevas lecturas de un modo tan vital como riguroso y consistente. Queda por saber si este pluralismo existente se irá todavía ampliando, si llegará a albergar más cabalmente tradiciones no tradicionales de pensamiento. Es decir, si podrá abrirse con más fuerza a un diálogo con puntos de vista sobre lo social, lo político y lo cultural provenientes de las epistemes no occidentales, o no completamente occidentales, que habitan el sur global.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Ce volume est le quatrième d’une série d’ouvrages portant sur « Statuts, écritures et pratiques sociales dans les sociétés de la Méditerranée occidentale à la fin du Moyen Âge (XIIe-XVe siècle) », visant à étudier les statuts communaux dans une optique d’histoire sociale, non pas comme une source « normative » mais comme une source de la pratique, de leur matérialité et de leur forme d’écriture aux pratiques sociales en passant par les conditions de leur production et de conservation, leur inscription dans un paysage documentaire communal, leur structure et leur contenu. Ce dernier ouvrage s’intéresse aux statuts « vus de l’extérieur » c’est-à-dire au rapport entre le texte statutaire et sa mise en jeu dans des pratiques sociales concrètes, mais aussi à la manière dont les acteurs médiévaux se posent la question de l’usage de la norme, aux divers moments documentaires où ils font référence ou allèguent explicitement les statuts dans leurs pratiques. Il n’est donc question de statuts qu’à travers d’autres documents, qu’ils fassent partie du paysage documentaire communal (délibérations communales, registres de justice, registres de compte, criées, épigraphie, iconographie, etc.) ou qu’ils soient élaborés en marge des écrits de gouvernement (registres notariés, testaments, récits de miracles, procès de canonisation, sources narratives, chroniques, etc.). Le but est de repérer, d’analyser et d’étudier la manière dont les normes statutaires se sont diffusées – ou pas –, ont été appliquées – ou pas – dans les pratiques politiques, économiques et sociales de la commune : comment ont-elles été validées, reproduites, conservées, diffusées ? C’est l’occasion de mesurer la force pratique des statuts, leurs effets dans la vie quotidienne du gouvernement et des acteurs sociaux, de prouver ainsi la pertinence de la confrontation entre divers éléments textuels produits par la commune pour élaborer une histoire des pratiques sociales à partir des pratiques d’écriture dans les sociétés de la Méditerranée occidentale à la fin du Moyen Âge (XIIe-XVe siècle).

    Description: In 1907, the city of Heredia became the epicenter of the most important religious conflict experienced by Costa Rica in the 20th century. A complaint that the theory of evolution was being taught in the Lyceum (i.e. secondary school) of that city, triggered an increasingly intense confrontation between the Catholic parishioners and the circle of young radical intellectuals articulating around the writer and educator Roberto Brenes Mesén. In the course of this process, Costa Rican society, to the alarm of the government of Cleto González Víquez, was the scene of popular mobilizations in defense of the faith, excommunications and burning of impious texts, while Catholic morality was systematically questioned based on sexual abuse attributed to priests. For a moment, it seemed that the country had gone back in time, and that the ghosts of 1884 were present.

    Description: Au début du siècle dernier, le sultan du Maroc vient de signer un traité qui place désormais son pays sous le protectorat de la France (30 mars 1912). À l’ombre du maréchal Lyautey, un sultan de substitution, totalement soumis aux nouveaux maîtres français, a été proclamé. Cependant, nombreux sont ceux qui, au Maroc, refusent le fait accompli et se révoltent face à la mainmise étrangère sur le pays. Ainsi, dans le Sud marocain, Moulay Ahmed el Hiba, fils d’un marabout ouest-saharien (Ma el Aïnin), se fait proclamer sultan du Jihad en 1912 ; une première fois à Tiznit, la seconde à Marrakech. Ces événements ont donné naissance à un mouvement qui pendant plus de vingt ans (1912-1934) symbolisera pour ces populations berbères et ouest-sahariennes la résistance à l’avancée inéluctable des troupes coloniales françaises et espagnoles. Fondée sur une analyse croisée d’archives inédites, aussi bien françaises que marocaines, l’auteur fait la lumière sur un événement fondateur de la conquête coloniale du Maroc. Mythifiée, récupérée ou occultée, la figure fondatrice du mouvement hibiste est encore aujourd’hui le sujet d’un conflit mémoriel ayant pour objet l’Ouest saharien.

    Description: La figure du baiser occupe une place de choix dans les romans de Mary Shelley (1797-1851), femme de lettres anglaise traditionnellement attachée au courant romantique. Cet ouvrage veut contribuer à la connaissance, encore trop peu développée en France, de cette romancière, par le biais d’une figure littéraire qui entretient un rapport fort à la littérature en général et au romantisme en particulier. Il s’agira d’étudier les modalités de la représentation du baiser dans les sept romans que Mary Shelley produisit entre 1818 et 1837. Figure de la rencontre de deux subjectivités, le baiser se décline sur un mode sensible, mythique et philosophique chez la romancière. Au terme de ce parcours, c’est une figure bien particulière de l’écrivain qui sera (re)découverte.

    Description: Aux xvie et xviie siècles, l’ordre européen était parfois menacé par des crises d’origine régionale. Ces désordres venaient des initiatives scandaleuses d’acteurs politiques habituellement peu présents sur la scène internationale (municipalités, institutions provinciales, seigneurs locaux). Pour résoudre des conflits internes, parfois contre leur propre souverain, ces acteurs n’hésitaient pas à appeler des puissances étrangères à leur secours, dans des logiques de solidarités politico-religieuses internationales. Les « affaires de Provence» (1580-1598) permettent de comprendre le fonctionnement de ce type de crises. Au plus fort des guerres de Religion en France, les catholiques de Provence appelèrent à leur secours le duc de Savoie, le grand-duc de Toscane, les papes et le roi d’Espagne. Parce que la Provence avait une position stratégique entre Barcelone et Gênes, d’autres puissances intervinrent à leur tour: l’Angleterre, l’Empire ottoman, le duché de Lorraine et la République de Venise. À partir d’une étude minutieuse des événements, ce livre mène une réflexion approfondie sur les défis stratégiques, intellectuels et rhétoriques d’une situation vécue à l’époque comme un désordre international, en raison de la marge de manœuvre subversive acquise par des acteurs ordinairement faibles.

Podríamos haber establecido muchas más relaciones entre ellos y articular otras tesis interpretativas, pero con ello escaparíamos los confines de un ensayo introductorio. Le dejamos a los amigos y amigas lectores el culminar una tarea que siempre permanecerá inconclusa. En todo caso, encontrarán a continuación una serie de relatos críticos a nuestra oficialidad y a los intereses que esta ha salvaguardado. Damos fe que la historia reciente, en buena medida, les ha dado la razón a estos pensadores. En Puerto Rico hemos gozado de una ventaja epistemológica que nos asigna un inusual grado de responsabilidad. Las causas de nuestra crisis no solo eran anticipables —mucho más previsibles que las azarosas rutas de los huracanes— sino que algunas nos fueron anunciadas desde hace medio siglo. Los que tuvimos el privilegio de ir a la universidad del estado —ahora, como todo, bajo asedio— pudimos leer y escuchar en sus aulas a algunos de estos autores, y a muchos otros que merecerían estar aquí.     Description: Entre le XIIIe et le XVIe siècle, dans les régions de la Méditerranée occidentale, princes, grands seigneurs, prélats et hommes d’affaires ont aimé décorer richement l’intérieur de leurs demeures. Ils y ont fait entrer l’image, précurseurs d’une longue histoire des espaces domestiques. On redécouvre aujourd’hui, à la faveur de restaurations, le foisonnant décor des plafonds, plus rarement celui des murs. Ce sont des centaines, des milliers d’images inédites qui nous parviennent et révèlent un Moyen Âge profane presque inconnu. Parmi la luxuriance des corniches et moulures où s’enroulent des rubans ou s’épanouissent fleurs et feuillages, les planchettes glissées entre les solives ont reçu des peintures dont la variété thématique nous ouvre une nouvelle part de l’imaginaire de ces siècles. La rigueur du programme héraldique voisine avec un monde animal souvent fantastique, mais aussi domestique, familier, ou exotique. Ici et là, des saynètes montrent des personnages humains, au jeu, en fête, au travail (fort peu), ou au combat. Ici, la veine est raffinée, là, d’une truculence comique. Cet ouvrage parcourt, pour la première fois, toutes les régions méditerranéennes qui ont participé de ce goût pour les charpentes peintes, trace la chronologie de leur histoire, observe les traits communs de leur inspiration et fait ressortir les nuances : la Renaissance et l’Antique s’expriment en même temps que la drôlerie des fabliaux.

    Description: Los estudios sociales en ciencia y tecnología en América Latina cuentan ya con medio siglo de desarrollo en la región. El origen del campo en los años sesenta dotó de características propias que permanecieron, a lo largo de las décadas con diferentes niveles de intensidad, en el marco de nuevos modelos y formas de pensar el desarrollo y de afrontar las condiciones de pobreza y exclusión de nuestras sociedades. Una vez recorrida la etapa de profesionalización del campo –y en diálogo con la dinámica de construcción de estos estudios en los países del norte– se retomaron desde nuevas preguntas y perspectivas aquellas reflexiones iniciadas en los años sesenta, al tiempo que se generaron esfuerzos por construir miradas originales sobre los significados sociales, económicos y políticos de la ciencia y la tecnología. Así se construyeron enfoques y perspectivas analíticas que aprovechan los aportes del campo a nivel internacional y los alimentan con perspectivas regionales. Ciencia, tecnología y sociedad en América Latina está organizado en cinco secciones variadas y heterogéneas, referidas todas ellas a América Latina, en las que se discuten problemas sociales muy diversos. El rico caudal de estas investigaciones sostiene como objetivo común la superación del atraso y de la dependencia de nuestros países, y la búsqueda de estrategias adecuadas en pos de mejorar las condiciones de vida en la región. Con una perspectiva múltiple e interdisciplinar, investigadores jóvenes del continente muestran la riqueza y la relevancia de los estudios actuales en este campo.

    Description: Jacques-Nicolas Billaud-Varenne (1756-1819) demeure un méconnu de l’historiographie révolutionnaire. En rééditant les Principes régénérateurs du systême social, opuscule publié en pluviôse an III (janvier-février 1795), peu de temps avant la déportation de l’auteur à Cayenne, on souhaite ici éclairer un moment essentiel dans l’élaboration de la « synthèse républicaine ». C’est aussi « une nouvelle manière d’écrire l’histoire de la Révolution française » (Michel Vovelle). Un retour critique au texte met en lumière, d’une part, l’acculturation d’un révolutionnaire de premier plan, d’autre part, les thèmes récurrents du discours jacobin. L’essai de Billaud-Varenne est, en effet, une expression du projet montagnard d’« institutions civiles ». Projet d’un lien social pour « mettre en action la morale » et « la donner pour base à la politique », espérance d’un nouvel espace public de réciprocité fraternelle où la citoyenneté compte au rang des droits naturels. Ainsi se dévoile une philosophie de la Révolution française qui n’est pas sans rapport avec la pensée allemande contemporaine de l’événement révolutionnaire.

    Description: Les relations entre les États-Unis et l’Unesco ont toujours été complexes comme le démontre l’étude des 20 premières années de celles-ci. Lors de la création de l’Unesco quelques Américains ont énormément travaillé pour que cette Institution spécialisée des Nations- Unis existe. Leur rôle et leur apport sont ici soigneusement mis en évidence. Or, les premières déceptions arrivent rapidement car, à tort, du côté de Washington, on espérait voir l’Organisation participer efficacement à la lutte contre le communisme. Néanmoins, à la fin des années 1950, l’Unesco connaît un regain de faveur auprès du gouvernement américain. Et si l’hégémonie financière américaine à l’Unesco n’a jamais fait de doute, sa domination politique est mise en cause dès les premières années. Les États-Unis vont quitter l’Unesco en 1984, quand la première génération d’Américains, fondateurs de l’Unesco et fidèles malgré les déceptions a, depuis longtemps, quitté la scène politique.     Description: Si l’histoire traditionnelle de l’hérésie au Moyen Âge s’est longtemps confondue avec celle des exclus de la société, l’approche récente se focalise davantage sur les diverses autorités qui, au coeur du pouvoir, élaborèrent la norme religieuse : l’hérésie n’existe que parce que l’orthodoxie en a d’abord décidé. Il reste que, loin de se présenter comme une essence immuable, elle s’impose tout au long du Moyen Âge comme un concept et une qualification d’une très grande plasticité. L’extension progressive du domaine de l’hérésie à de nombreuses formes de dissidence finit par lui assurer le statut d’un crime englobant. Cette enquête collective repose sur la conviction que c’est encore en se situant aux marges de l’hérésie, au contact d’activités répréhensibles voisines, telles que l’usure, la sorcellerie ou encore la rébellion politique, que l’on peut le mieux saisir les principes et les mécanismes de la fabrique de l’hérésie.

    Description: Qu’on l’appelle « D-Day », « Jour J », « 6 Juin » ou « Débarquement », nulle autre précision n’est nécessaire pour évoquer l’offensive alliée en Normandie en 1944, alors même que de nombreuses opérations militaires de ce type ont été menées au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et que le sort de l’Allemagne nazie s’est joué sur le front de l’Est. Quelles sont les raisons qui expliquent que cette bataille – une parmi tant d’autres qui ont émaillé les conflits du xxe siècle – a d’emblée revêtu une dimension historique pour les contemporains ? Pourquoi précisément cette opération militaire est-elle désormais régulièrement commémorée par autant de chefs d’État sous le regard des télévisions du monde entier ? Comment expliquer le statut si particulier acquis par cet événement au fil des décennies, jusqu’au projet d’inscription des plages du Débarquement au patrimoine de l’Unesco ? En revenant à la dramatisation des enjeux d’une bataille annoncée près de quatre années à l’avance, mais aussi aux ressorts politiques, idéologiques, économiques et culturels qui ont contribué à transcender l’événement en épopée, cet ouvrage s’interroge sur la quête d’identité de chacun des acteurs nationaux à travers l’évolution de leur mémoire. Ainsi peut-on mieux comprendre la surprenante transformation de l’épisode guerrier en symbole universel de paix et de liberté.

The present study links the reproach of sexual misconduct as a political argument in medieval discourse to medieval ideas about royalty and government, opening new perspectives of a cultural history of politics in the Later Middle Ages.
    Description: Die politische Rolle des Favoriten und die Art seiner Beziehung zum König sind in der Forschung oft nicht klar gesehen worden, da in den Diskursen des frühen und späten Mittelalters die besondere Nähe zum Herrscher regelmäßig in der Sprache der Liebe und in Gesten der körperlichen Nähe und Intimität zum Ausdruck kam. So entstand der Eindruck, dass der König aus homosexueller Neigung seinem Günstling übermäßigen Einfluss gewährte – auf Kosten der Barone, die ebenfalls einen Anteil an der Macht beanspruchten. In dieser Studie wird die Figur des Favoriten neu betrachtet und in ihrer Bedeutung über den Einzelfall hinaus verständlich gemacht. Sie setzt den Vorwurf sexuellen Fehlverhaltens als politisches Argument in Bezug zur Entwicklung der Vorstellung von Königtum und Herrschaft und eröffnet so neue Perspektiven einer Kulturgeschichte des Politischen im Spätmittelalter.

Ainsi, l’impression est née que le roi, par inclination homosexuelle, accordait une influence excessive à son favori – aux dépens des barons, qui revendiquaient, eux aussi, une part du pouvoir. Dans l’esprit d’une »histoire culturelle de la politique«, le présent ouvrage reconsidère la figure du favori, la rend compréhensible et tangible dans sa signification au-delà du cas individuel. Il met en évidence le caractère constructif des modèles modernes de perception du désir sexuel et souligne l’importance de l’inconduite sexuelle comme argument politique dans le discours médiéval.

In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: « Zone tribale du Nord-Yémen », « zone tribale de l’Ouest pakistanais », voilà bien des expressions qui reviennent dans l’actualité pour désigner des régions de confins farouchement réfractaires à l’imposition d’un nouvel ordre politique. Dès la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle, les États européens, emportés dans leur mouvement d’expansion outre-mer, vinrent buter, en périphérie, sur ce type d’espace en quelque sorte interstitiel des relations internationales contemporaines. Dans ces zones où les agents traditionnels de la vie diplomatique pénétraient peu, ou mal, une expertise particulière, celle du renseignement et des agences de sécurité, parut s’imposer. Lorsque la France coloniale s’implante en Syrie et au Liban, au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, elle doit précisément faire face à ce type de résistance, où se combinent turbulences tribales, désordres sociaux et effervescence identitaire. La lutte qui s’engage alors entre bandes armées locales d’une part, et Service des Renseignements de l’armée française de l’autre, dépasse, et de loin, le face-à-face purement martial, mais renvoie à un choc des violences, sociale et guerrière d’un côté, étatique et militaire de l’autre, dont il n’est pas sûr que la leçon ne vaille qu’au passé.

    Description: En 1626, une première compagnie par actions est formée à l’initiative de Richelieu pour mener la colonisation des Petites Antilles et organiser le trafic transatlantique. Elle repose sur les associés, des proches du cardinal, qui en possèdent le capital et en assurent la direction. En 1635, elle est réorganisée afin de pouvoir satisfaire d’une façon plus efficace les objectifs qui lui ont été fixés par la monarchie, à savoir, conquérir et peupler des terres et favoriser le commerce. Elle prend alors le nom de Compagnie des îles de l’Amérique. Sous sa conduite, les Français déjà établis à Saint-Christophe s’installent à la Guadeloupe et à la Martinique et affichent des prétentions sur la Grenade, Sainte-Croix, Saint- Martin et Saint-Barthélemy. Plusieurs milliers de colons tentent l’aventure en franchissant l’océan à la quête d’un meilleur avenir et de richesses. Les terres sont exploitées pour satisfaire les besoins de la métropole. Quelques grands domaines s’appuyant sur une main-d’œuvre constituée d’esclaves africains développent de nouvelles productions comme le sucre et l’indigo. Mais la Compagnie est bientôt confrontée à de multiples difficultés qui remettent en cause son fonctionnement et ses finalités. Les tensions dans les îles et les faibles retombées de sa politique économique conduisent les associés à cesser progressivement leurs activités à partir de 1649. Sa fin pourtant ne signifie pas l’échec de la colonisation française des Petites Antilles. L’héritage qu’elle lègue va fructifier durant les décennies suivantes et donner naissance au premier empire colonial français.

    Description: A lo largo de doscientos años de autonomía en Centroamérica se ha demostrado suficientemente que las pretensiones de independencia, a pesar de consolidarse en el plano político, no abonaron para generar el cambio de las estructuras sociales y económicas. Abundantes análisis señalan la recurrente falta de visión y voluntad para reorientar el camino de los países centroamericanos. ¿En dónde está la región? ¿Qué perspectivas se pueden visualizar a partir de las condiciones con las que se convive cotidianamente? ¿Hay alternativas que subsanen los excesos del sistema vigente y que lo reorienten o transformen? These cries made in October 1850 by grape pickers from the Dole area are one of the many traces that Pierre Merlin collected in archives that have been little-studied until now to write the living history of the democratic learning in Jura between 1848 and the end of the 19th century.     Description: Aboutissement d’une exploration systématique de toutes les sources disponibles, tant latines qu’orientales, ce gros ouvrage constitue une somme encore inégalée sur l’histoire des croisades et du royaume latin de Jérusalem. L’édifice repose sur une étude attentive de la situation de l’Orient musulman et de l’Occident chrétien, à la fin du XIe siècle. Dans ce tableau viennent naturellement s’insérer la prédication et l’organisation de la Première Croisade. Pauvres et riches, piétons et chevaliers prennent la route de Jérusalem, conquièrent la Ville sainte, après "mainte souffrance, et y établissent le coeur d’un nouvel État progressivement conquis. Le réveil du djihad suscite les Deuxième et Troisième Croisades, inégalement fructueuses. À la fin du XIIe siècle, le redressement du monde latin conduit à l’avènement d’un second royaume, centré sur la ville d’Acre, mais réduit à un liseré côtier. Après les espoirs que font naître Frédéric II puis saint Louis, les Mamlûks prennent le dessus, le royaume se désagrège jusqu’à la catastrophe finale de 1291. La précision du récit événementiel laisse place à de larges échappées sur les institutions et la société des États latins, résultat de la première colonisation qu’ait établie l’Occident chrétien en terre étrangère. Tant par l’élégance de son écriture que par la richesse de l’information, l’oeuvre de Joshua Prawer reste un monument de granit dans l’historiographie de l’Orient latin.

    Description: Les Éditions du Cerf comptent dans le paysage éditorial français, et pas seulement dans le domaine de l’édition religieuse. Fondées en 1929 par deux religieux dominicains dans le prolongement du succès de la revue La Vie Spirituelle, elles ont rapidement acquis, par leurs périodiques et par leurs livres, une réputation enviable dans l’aile marchante de l’Église de France : mouvement ecclésiologique (collection « Unam Sanctam » du père Congar) ; mouvement biblique (Bible dite de Jérusalem) ; mouvement patristique (collection « Sources chrétiennes ») ; mouvement liturgique (revue La Maison-Dieu) ; mouvement théologique (collection « Cogitatio Fidei »). Elles ont été ainsi un des vecteurs majeurs en France de l’aggiornamento conciliaire voulu par Jean XXIII. Mais leur histoire n’a pas été un long fleuve tranquille : les Éditions du Cerf ont traversé bien des orages du fait de leurs positions d’ouverture sur les grandes crises du xxe siècle : condamnation par Rome de l’Action française, guerre d’Espagne, Seconde Guerre mondiale, guerre froide ou guerre d’Algérie. C’est ce parcours mouvementé, conjuguant histoire générale et histoire religieuse, que retrace ce livre, rédigé de première main par un universitaire familier de tels événements, avec les archives des provinces dominicaines françaises. Il éclaire tout un pan de l’histoire du catholicisme en France au xxe siècle.

    Description: Ce livre est le résultat d’une enquête menée sur les archives les plus anciennes d’une institution originale et mal connue : la Pénitencerie apostolique. Né au tout début du XIIIe siècle dans le giron d’une papauté exerçant son pouvoir sur tout l’Occident latin, ce nouvel office fut d’abord chargé d’entendre en confession les pèlerins qui se rendaient à Rome pour demander l’absolution de leurs péchés. Puis il se vit mandaté pour répondre aux suppliques qui, chaque jour, étaient adressées au souverain pontife. L’enquête s’appuie donc sur les « formulaires » voués à recueillir, réordonner et abréger les milliers de lettres que la Pénitencerie expédiait en réponse aux suppliants. Véritables répertoires d’exemples, dans lesquels la forme et la norme étaient indissociables, ces manuels reflètent tous les cas de figure auxquels pouvait être confrontée la Pénitencerie : homicides, naissances illégitimes, mariages incestueux, faux et usage de faux, moines ayant fui leurs couvents, etc. À tous ces suppliants, le tribunal du pape avait la charge d’octroyer des dispenses, des licences ou des absolutions, parfois dans le secret du « for de la confession ». Situé au croisement d’une histoire des pratiques de l’écrit et de l’avènement des bureaucraties, du gouvernement pastoral et de la souveraineté pontificale, de la confession auriculaire et de l’espace public, ce livre entend dépasser le cadre classique de la monographie institutionnelle.

The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: A conqueror does not only use the power of weapons and techniques. He also imports and imposes a system of norms, beliefs and forms of artistic expression in order to establish a political project that he considers legitimate. Situated on the edge of cultural and art history, this study aims to open up new perspectives on artistic creation during the Baroque period in Latin America. Lorsqu’un conquérant conscient de sa supériorité colonise un territoire, il ne se sert pas seulement de la puissance des armes et des techniques. Il importe et impose aussi un système de normes, de croyances et des formes d’expression artistique pour asseoir un projet politique qui lui semble d’entrée de jeu légitime. Située aux confins de l’histoire culturelle et de l’histoire des arts, cette étude s’efforce d’ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives sur la création artistique à l’époque baroque dans une Amérique Latine en voie de colonisation par les Européens, en analysant plus particulièrement le contexte d’apparition du syncrétisme religieux. À partir de l’étude minutieuse d’une sélection d’œuvres produites entre le xvie et le xviiie siècle dans la région andine (Pérou, Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur) et au Mexique, dans des domaines aussi divers que la gravure, la peinture, la sculpture ou encore l’architecture, il s’agit de montrer comment l’art du colonisateur intervient comme une instance productrice de normes et de jugements de valeur dans l’espace ibéro-­américain indigène. Dans l’Amérique coloniale, le syncrétisme dont témoigne l’art des premiers « créoles », autrement dit l’assimilation de nouveaux codes et leur amalgame avec le substrat culturel existant, encourage la négation de l’ancienne culture tout en procédant au recyclage d’anciens codes pour donner naissance à des croyances et des formes artistiques nouvelles, un métissage dont les conséquences, à la fois positives et négatives, se manifestent jusque de nos jours.

    Description: This book aims to study the history of the University of Tortosa from its canonical erection in 1600 to 1717, when it was transferred to Cervera. Through four chapters the place of the University of Tortosa in the set of the Universities of the Crown of Aragon is studied, through the proposopography of rectors, lecturers and graduates. It was a Convent-University run by the Order of Preachers that exclusively taught Philosophy and Theology. The documentary appendix includes the Statutes of the Colegio de San Matías and San Jaime, the Statutes of the University, as well as the list of graduates that has been preserved for the periods 1600-1623 and 1659-1717. Among them, there are numerous regular and secular clergymen from Valencia, Catalonia, Aragon and Mallorca.---Este libro pretende estudiar la historia de la Universidad de Tortosa desde su erección canónica en 1600 hasta 1717, año en el que fue transferida a Cervera. A través de cuatro capítulos, se estudia el lugar de la Universidad de Tortosa en el conjunto de las Universidades de la Corona de Aragón, mediante la proposopografía de rectores, lectores y graduados. Era un Convento-Universidad que estaba en manos de la Orden de Predicadores, y en el que se enseñaba exclusivamente Filosofía y Teología. El apéndice documental incluye los Estatutos del Colegio de San Matías y San Jaime, los Estatutos de la Universidad, así como la relación de los graduados que se ha conservado para los períodos 1600-1623 y 1659-1717. Bien que la frontière ne soit pas une notion proprement médiévale, elle est cependant un thème classique des études sur le Moyen Âge. À la fois prégnant et souvent insaisissable, cet objet a été envisagé dans une optique comparatiste, en considérant les limites entre pouvoirs ou entre cultures, les divisions administratives, mais aussi les zones frontalières, de l'Angleterre à l'Empire mongol, de la Saxe aux terres valenciennes ou castillanes et à l'Iran. Sans négliger l'étude des espaces qui délimitent des aires d'exercice de pouvoirs et contribuent à la construction des territoires, les auteurs s'attachent à une histoire sociale, à des échelles variables, du quartier urbain à l'empire. Ce volume présente les résultats des échanges du 51e congrès de la Société des historiens médiévistes de l'Enseignement supérieur public, tenu virtuellement à Perpignan malgré les restrictions d'accès aux archives et aux bibliothèques. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

El recorrido histórico comienza en 1951, antes del triunfo de la Revolución, y termina en 1962, año que marca la ruptura entre los cineastas cubanos y la estética neorrealista italiana. Las colaboraciones principales sucedieron entre los directores de cine Tomás Gutiérrez Alea y Julio García Espinosa y el cineasta neorrealista italiano Cesare Zavattini. Las circunstancias que llevaron al fin de las relaciones entre Zavattini y los cineastas cubanos están conectadas a la película El joven rebelde, dirigida por García Espinosa y estrenada por primera vez en 1961. La ruptura se dio por divergencias creativas e ideológicas sobre la manera en que se quería retratar al protagonista del largometraje. Este detalle, que aparentemente puede parecer de menor importancia, tuvo repercusiones importantes que llevaron a un distanciamiento de García Espinosa, de Gutiérrez Alea, así como del resto de los cineastas cubanos que estaban trabajando en el Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC) a partir de 1959, para buscar sus propias estrategias creativas con el fin de moldear una producción cinematográfica nacional. Sin embargo, cabe señalar que los cineastas cubanos no habrían encontrado la gramática necesaria para reescribir su cine revolucionario sin las colaboraciones y sobre todo sin la ruptura con Zavattini. Este nuevo lenguaje cinematográfico no habría podido existir sin las varias pausas y distancias que caracterizaron la relación cubana con el neorrealismo. En otras palabras, el intercambio fragmentado entre García Espinosa, Gutiérrez Alea y Zavattini creó nuevos espacios dentro de los cuales los cubanos pudieron encontrar oportunidades creativas para expresar su propia visión cinematográfica. Neorrealismo y cine en Cuba: Historia y discurso entorno a la primera polémica de la Revolución, 1951-1962 [Neorealism and Cinema in Cuba: History and Discourse on the First Polemic of the Revolution, 1951-1962] examines the aesthetic history and relations between Cuban film production and Italian Neorealism. The historical framework begins in 1951 before the triumph of the Cuban Revolution and ends in 1962, a year that marks a rupture between Cuban filmmakers and the Italian neorealist aesthetic. The main collaborations happened between Cuban directors Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Julio García Espinosa and Italian neorealist filmmaker Cesare Zavattini. The circumstances that led to the end of the relationship between Zavattini and the Cuban filmmakers are connected to the film El joven rebelde [The Young Rebel], directed by García Espinosa and screened for the first time in 1961. The rupture centered on creative and ideological differences regarding the way in which the protagonist was to be portrayed in the movie. This seemingly minor disagreement had considerably larger repercussions, the end result of which was that García Espinosa and Gutiérrez Alea, as well as the rest of the Cuban filmmakers who worked within the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC) after 1959, were driven to find their own creative strategies to craft a national film production. However, the Cuban filmmakers would not have found the necessary grammar to rewrite their own revolutionary cinema without the rupture with Zavattini. This new cinematographic language could not have existed without the various pauses and the distances that characterized the Cuban relationship with Neorealism. In other words, the fragmentary interchange between García Espinosa, Gutierrez Alea, and Zavattini created new spaces in which the Cubans could find creative opportunities to express their own cinematic vision.

L’épanouissement de ce phénomène urbain sous le règne de Louis XIV a tôt fait de le faire assimiler au volontarisme politique du monarque absolu. Cette interprétation longtemps vivace a eu pour effet de passer sous silence l’action décisive des populations, des habitants des villes eux-mêmes, face à ces aménagements urbains. À partir des embellissements qu’ont connus les villes d’Aix et de Marseille au milieu du xviie siècle, cet ouvrage permet de revenir sur ces événements qui ont profondément marqué l’organisation de nos villes. En reléguant au second plan les aspects architecturaux et monumentaux de ces accroissements d’ampleur, pour se concentrer sur les processus juridiques et sociaux qui encadrent et accompagnent ces opérations urbaines, ce livre éclaire sous un jour nouveau l’action des habitants les plus divers dans ces projets. À partir d’un éventail documentaire particulièrement varié, ce sont plus largement les modes de production de l’espace des sociétés anciennes qui se trouvent mis en lumière.     Description: Pour René Girault, « être historien des relations internationales », ce n’est pas seulement faire de l’histoire des relations inter- nationales ou développer des recherches dans ce domaine, c’est aussi se poser des questions d’historien ; c’est réfléchir sans cesse sur la validité de ce qui constitue sa propre discipline. Parce que cette préoccupation marque constamment et fructueusement son œuvre, René Girault s’inscrit dans la prestigieuse lignée de Pierre Renouvin et de Jean-Baptiste Duroselle. Ses nombreux disciples ont voulu lui rendre hommage en rassemblant certains de ses textes et en sélectionnant précisément ceux qui rendent le mieux compte de sa réflexion historique. A n’en point douter, il existe une « méthode Girault », une méthode qui, prolongeant et renouvelant celle de Pierre Renouvin, tend à écrire une histoire globale des relations internationales, avec un horizon bien plus large que celui de l’histoire diplomatique traditionnelle. En analysant scrupuleusement les liens entre l’économique et le poli- tique, en mesurant le poids des représentations et des imaginaires sociaux, en démontant les mécanismes de décision, René Girault donne des éclairages très originaux sur des questions fondamentales : 1’« impérialisme », la « puissance », la place de la France dans le monde, la construction de l’Europe et l’identité européenne. Grand historien, René Girault est aussi un intellectuel en son siècle, pour qui toute réflexion sur l’histoire est aussi une réflexion sur la démocratie.

    Description: The court and court society in the Hispanic world (16th-18th centuries): The courtly world has emerged as a propitious intellectual and historiographical space for thinking and writing the history of early modernity. Ever since the renewal of the so-called ‘political history,’ but also after the perspective of cultural studies, the courtly has become the privileged scenario for the study of the political society of the Modern Age, starting from the analysis of the formation of the different social actors’ different political identities in dispute, as well as the tracking of hidden interests in decision-making in order to understand power groups or networks. Similarly, the courtly cannot but be thought of as that singular scenario and/or space of conjunction and indistinction between the political (public) and the economic (private), as well as a locus of identity formation and dispute. In this sense, the study of the Ancien Régime societies cannot ignore the courtly, which is a key element for understanding and analyzing one of the articulating elements of the globality of the European monarchies, particularly the Hispanic monarchy. As this work describes, this global perspective allows us to understand the importance and imprint of the courtly in America. Therefore, the aim is to analyze and understand the court and the courtly world from multiple perspectives. The articles that make up this work problematize the courtly from different geographical spaces, but above all from different intellectual concerns and preoccupations: princely and courtly education, the problem of the King’s favorite, the religious, the nobiliary, the place of the feminine in the court or, also, the materiality of the courtly texts and the materiality of the government of the monarchy from the court.

    Description: El mundo cortesano se ha erigido como un espacio intelectual e historiográfico propicio para pensar y escribir la historia de la primera modernidad. Desde la renovación de la denominada ‘historia política’, pero también desde los estudios culturales, lo cortesano ha devenido en el escenario privilegiado de estudio de la sociedad política de la Edad Moderna, partiendo de análisis de la conformación de las diferentes identidades políticas en disputa de los distintos actores sociales, como también del rastreo de intereses ocultos en las tomas de decisiones para comprender redes o grupos de poder. Asimismo, lo cortesano no puede dejar de pensarse como ese escenario y/o espacio singular de conjunción e indistinción entre lo político (público) y lo económico (privado), así como un locus de conformación y disputa identitaria. En este sentido, el estudio de las sociedades del Antiguo Régimen no puede obviar lo cortesano, máxima para comprender y analizar uno de los elementos articuladores de la globalidad de las monarquías europeas, singularmente de la monarquía hispánica. Esta perspectiva global nos permite comprender, como se realiza en esta obra, la importancia e impronta de lo cortesano en América. Por lo tanto, esta obra busca analizar y comprender la corte y el mundo cortesano desde múltiples perspectivas. Los artículos que conforman esta obra problematizan lo cortesano desde diversos espacios geográficos, pero sobre todo desde distintas inquietudes y preocupaciones intelectuales: la educación principesca y cortesana, el problema del valimiento, lo religioso, lo nobiliario, el lugar de lo femenino en la corte o, también, la materialidad de los textos cortesanos y la materialidad del gobierno de la monarquía desde la corte.

    Description: L’accroissement des mobilités de passagers et des circulations marchandes constitue, à partir de la seconde moitié du xviiie siècle, un véritable défi pour les forces de l’ordre chargées de leur contrôle. Cet ouvrage entend saisir les dynamiques historiques de ce contrôle en Europe et aux États-Unis, par une analyse des acteurs, des pratiques et des lieux où il s’exerce de New York à Naples, d’Anvers à Marseille. Cette régulation des trafics présente des configurations différentes selon les modes de transport (voiture à cheval ou automobile, chemin de fer, navigation à voile ou à vapeur), les échelles d’observation et les types de mobilités. Résolument inscrite dans les évolutions récentes de ce champ de recherche, la démarche est ici empirique, attentive à la façon dont les institutions évoluent sans cesse à travers leur action. Pero también, para que nos cuenten cómo a pesar de los estigmas y de las limitaciones, lograron buscar soluciones, se reunieron, organizaron y crearon un mejor futuro para las nuevas generaciones.

    Description: « Cli-en-té-lis-me », le mot est ancien, dure et perdure. Mais de quoi parle-t-on au juste? « Je connais tel élu et il a le bras long, il pourra me trouver une place à la mairie! » Si la phrase est courante, quelles réalités et quels fantasmes recouvre-t-elle précisément ? Alors que le phénomène du clientélisme a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs études en sociologie et sciences politiques, cette pratique originale a moins retenu l’attention des historiens du politique. Spécialiste de l’histoire politique française contemporaine, Julie Bour entend étudier les acteurs, causes, modalités et limites du clientélisme via une approche quantitative originale et inédite, reposant sur l’exploitation statistique de corpus importants de courriers de recommandation, dépassant parfois les milliers de lettres entre les élus et leurs administrés et portant sur des dossiers sensibles, symboliques ou plus prosaïques (emplois, décorations, service militaire, aide sociale, affaires communales, etc.). Elle concentre son analyse sur un espace test particulier qui est celui de la Lorraine et l’appréhende sur le temps long qui va de la IIIe République aux années 2000. Au travers d’études de cas portant sur des élus célèbres (Louis Jacquinot, Pierre Messmer, François Guillaume, Christian Pierret) ou plus anonymes (Jean Bernard, Jules Develle, André Savard) qui représentent l’ensemble des courants politiques, le clientélisme apparaît pour ce qu’il est réellement : une pratique très répandue (et non limité à un Sud méditerranéen arriéré), qui structure la vie politique locale, mobilise tout un réseau d’intercesseurs relais, crée des solidarités fines entre l’élu et les électeurs, et joue un rôle parfois déterminant dans l’élection et la longévité politique de certains parlementaires. Cette pratique, ancrée sur la durée, institutionnalisée au point d’être déculpabilisée, interroge la démocratie dans ses limites en termes de corruption et de clientélisme.

    Description: La lucha por la implementación del Acuerdo de Paz transcurre de manera simultánea en dos sentidos. Por una parte, como necesidad de superar y derrotar en forma definitiva las resistencias de sectores que liderados por las expresiones más extremistas de la derecha política buscan desconocer la realidad histórica y concreta del Acuerdo de Paz, en cuanto posibilidad de tramitar el conflicto social y d clase por la vía exclusivamente política. Pero, al mismo tiempo, por la otra, como necesidad también de una implementación integral, de construir la legitimidad de una concepción de la paz que trascienda la visión meramente pacificadora o gatopardista, es decir, que apunte a una paz que efectivamente posea los contenidos propios de la democracia verdadera y la justicia social en camino hacias las transformaciones más profundas de la sociedad colombiana. Y, por qué no decirlo, que se encauce hacia la superación definitiva del orden social vigente; aspiración que también se encontraba tanto en los orígenes como en la larga historia de la lucha guerrillera en Colombia.

    Description: L’histoire étant l’étude des hommes en société, tout historien fait de l’histoire sociale, parfois magnifiquement, mais la société française dans sa longue durée n’a jamais trouvé son historien. Le sujet, qui est très complexe, a été ici attaqué sous deux angles. On a d’abord analysé les cadres sociaux, qui varient lentement, tels la famille et la parenté, les liens d’homme à homme, les cadres ruraux (village, paroisse, seigneurie) et les villes. Puis les classes sociales, qui dépendent des forces économiques et politiques, ont été étudiées en trois chapitres, 500-900, 900-1275, 1275-1500. En conclusion on s’est demandé, s’il y avait vers 1500 une société, une nation, une patrie française. La réponse a été nuancée, comme de juste.

In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: El Diablo entra en el Paraíso, con la intención de apropiarse de la humanidad utilizando un nuevo y formidable instrumento: el proceso. Compuesto en el siglo XIV, transmitido como obra jurídica falsamente atribuida a Bartolo da Sassoferrato, el “Proceso entre el Diablo y la Virgen María” es un proceso simulado, en forma de diálogo, entre el Diablo, Cristo y la Virgen. Considerado como obra menor y casi ignorado por la historiografía, la obra constituye en realidad un extraordinario ejemplo de sincretismo cultural: el lenguaje de la teología sirve al derecho como fuente de legitimación, y a la inversa, la construcción escatológica y la misma teoría de la Salvación se injertan en una estructura jurídica. Desde esta perspectiva, aquí se vuelve a proponer el texto como un punto de observación ideal para aprehender las interacciones de una cultura poliédrica y compleja, suma de teatro y literatura, de derecho y teología, culta y popular.

    Description: Considéré d’habitude comme le « père » de l’anarchisme français, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon entretient un rapport ambivalent avec la création littéraire. Cet essai retrace tout d’abord la relation de Proudhon à la littérature, telle qu’elle apparaît à travers ses ouvrages. Il analyse ensuite les discours tenus dans ses quatre journaux sur les triomphes du roman-feuilleton, visant la conception d’un feuilleton révolutionnaire capable de diffuser auprès du lectorat populaire, par le biais de la fiction, les idées et les théories qui aideront à son affranchissement. Une présentation des romans-feuilletons parus dans les diverses incarnations du journal Le Peuple est suivie par une étude plus approfondie de l’un d’entre eux, le roman Le Mont Saint-Michel, qui narre les aventures d’un groupe de républicains lors du célèbre épisode de la barricade du cloître Saint-Merry, clou tragique de l’insurrection avortée de 1832. Convoquant de nombreux auteurs connus (Michelet, Stendhal, Victor Hugo et Alexandre Dumas père) et oubliés, cette analyse veut offrir une réflexion sur la nature du roman historique et de l’écriture historiographique pendant une période clef pour leur développement.

    Description: Innocent III (1198-1216) fut l’un des papes les plus marquants du Moyen Âge. Mais l’importance de son action à la tête de l’Église a longtemps occulté le passé de celui que l’on surnomma « la stupeur du monde ». Or, avant son pontificat, il connut une brillante et rapide ascension que les sources permettent de retracer. Lothaire de Segni était un fils de l’aristocratie du sud du Latium, implantée à Rome. Esprit rigoureux, formé par les meilleurs maîtres de son temps à Rome, Bologne et surtout à Paris où il fréquenta les écoles de Saint-Victor et du Cloître Notre-Dame, il devint un théologien réputé à la curie, auteur de trois ouvrages majeurs, expert en exégèse et en liturgie, instruit en dialectique. Dès l’enfance, il entra au service de l’Église romaine et fut soutenu au long de son cursus par un groupe de clercs et de cardinaux influents. Promu lui-même cardinal des Saints-Serge-et-Bacchus à vingt-neuf ans, il fut élu pape dix ans plus tard, le 8 janvier 1198, porté par l’espoir d’une réforme de l’Église, espoir que semblait incarner sa jeunesse. L’étude de cette carrière exceptionnelle illustre les chemins qui, au XIIe siècle, mènent au pontificat, et les critères plus ou moins implicites de l’élection : la personnalité du candidat - tributaire des archétypes moraux de l’époque -, ses compétences intellectuelles, le poids du contexte politique et des réseaux d’influence, tout en laissant sa part au hasard, ou à la Providence comme l’affirment les sources.

    Description: Aux côtés de Friedrich Hayek, et avant que Milton Friedman n’imprime son empreinte à partir des années I960, l’économiste allemand Wilhelm Röpke (1899-1966), installé à Genève après avoir fui le nazisme, a été l’autre grand fondateur du néolibéralisme. Exploitant de nombreuses archives, cet ouvrage recourt aux outils de l’histoire intellectuelle et transnationale pour proposer une autre lecture d’un phénomène trop souvent encore réduit à ses manifestations les plus contemporaines et les plus anglo-saxonnes, alors qu’il plonge ses racines dans la crise des années 1930 et prend forme en Suisse au lendemain immédiat de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Loin de l’érudition et de l’anecdote, par-delà le souci de redonner son importance à une figure étonnamment délaissée par les chercheurs, la biographie est ici une démarche de contextualisation visant à expliquer le succès d’un intellectuel autant sociologue qu’économiste. Incontournable en Suisse et en Allemagne, très lié aux nouveaux conservateurs américains, pourfendeur du « collectivisme » sous toutes ses formes, préoccupé du sort de l’Amérique latine et de l’Afrique, publiant dans toutes les langues, Wilhelm Röpke a incarné la variante néolibérale de l’intellectuel engagé. Au-delà de la dénonciation du keynésianisme, de l’interventionnisme et de l’Etat providence, ses écrits et ses réseaux permettent de cerner le néolibéralisme comme un regard global sur le monde, comme une philosophie politique et sociale ambivalente dans son rapporté la modernité, comme une mobilisation de combat et d’influence à l’échelle occidentale. L’écho rencontré par Wilhelm Röpke illustre la renaissance des idées libérales et conservatrices dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle et le rôle majeur joué dans leur fermentation et leur diffusion par les intellectuels émigrés d’origine germanique.

    Description: Cet ouvrage envisage l’histoire politique récente des disciplines scolaires à différentes échelles sur plusieurs continents. Il vise à éclairer les rapports entre cultures politiques et transmission scolaire des savoirs, tant aux États-Unis qu’en Europe occidentale, en Chine, en Russie ou dans les territoires ultramarins français. Alors que le rôle des disciplines scolaires dans la construction des États-nations commence à être bien connu, il est intéressant de comprendre comment les rapports entre sociétés, pouvoirs et disciplines scolaires ont évolué depuis 1945 et jusqu’à nos jours, dans des contextes démocratiques ou autoritaires. Sous l’effet de la démocratisation scolaire ou de l’emprise grandissante de l’évaluation, les facteurs qui déterminent l’organisation et le contenu des disciplines scolaires ont beaucoup changé. L’étude de ces transformations ne se fait pas uniquement à travers l’analyse des outils pédagogiques mais met ceux-ci en relation avec des changements plus larges concernant la géopolitique ou les politiques nationales, les évolutions démographiques, les changements des mentalités et des cultures transmises.

Aunque, como alerta Camus en La caída, si estuviesemos en una democracia seríamos todos culpados. No es el caso. No hay como transigir frente al descalabro de la supuesta cooperacion internacional, la connivencia criminal de la elite haitiana y el sufrimiento sin fin de la mayoría de su poblacion. Se trata de un testimonio comprometido, escrito por alguien imbuido de la tenue esperanza de que puede contribuir a reducir el tiempo que falta para que el mundo y Haití encuentren otro camino, distinto al que recorrieron hasta ahora, en sus relaciones recíprocas.

    Description: Pendant longtemps, on a pensé que les hommes d’affaires catholiques, contrairement aux protestants dont on estimait qu’ils étaient plus capables, ne songeaient qu’à quitter les activités marchandes en essayant de s’anoblir. On considérait qu’il s’agissait d’une "trahison" de la bourgeoisie. Or ceci, depuis quelque temps, a été remis en cause. Nombreux ont été les catholiques, Français ou étrangers, qui n’ont pas abandonné le monde des affaires dont leur maîtrise était indiscutable. L’étude de la dynastie Le Couteulx, qui après avoir été attirée par le protestantisme est revenue au catholicisme dans les années qui suivent l’Édit de Nantes, en est une preuve supplémentaire. Après être devenus marchands-drapiers à Rouen dans les premières décennies du xvie siècle, les Le Couteulx fondèrent une banque privée à Paris dans les années 1670, qui fut considérée par Boisguilbert, au début du xviiie siècle, comme « la banque la plus fameuse de France » et le demeura jusqu’au début de la Révolution, tandis qu’un membre de la dynastie fut un des fondateurs de la Banque de France.

    Description: This book looks at the Hispanic monarchy in America through its ability to territorialize the spaces theoretically under its control. While the analysis confirms the central role played by the city, its novelty lies in the effort made to spatialize and contextualize the notions of territorialization and circulation. The Spanish Empire appears as an atomized urban archipelago, favoring the affirmation of original idiosyncratic poles captured through the polysemy of the term “caste”, often reduced to the global concept of “race” by historiography. On the contrary, this book demonstrates the importance of specific forms of experience in defining belonging, while highlighting the social construction of spaces revealed by the circulation of the idea of “caste”.

    Description: En este libro se abordan algunas de las formas en las que la desigualdad social y la estigmatización, racialización e invisibilización de la pobreza se legitiman a través de la prensa hegemónica. Reúne artículos que presentan parte de los resultados de las investigaciones llevadas a cabo en Argentina, Brasil y Colombia en el marco del proyecto POLAME (Poverty, Language and Media –Pobreza, Lenguaje y Medios–) financiado por la cooperación noruega. Los autores pertenecen al equipo de este proyecto salvo el caso de Marcela Toro, articulista invitada. El objetivo del proyecto POLAME fue detectar las expresiones lingüísticas usadas en la prensa de cuatro países indo/latinoamericanos (Brasil, Argentina, Colombia y México), palabras, vocabulario, nociones, conceptos, atributos sobre la pobreza y sus representaciones, partiendo del supuesto de que, como formadora de opinión, la prensa hegemónica reproduce concepciones, creencias e ideologías sobre la pobreza.

    Description: The history of Montbeliard began in the late 9th century with the construction of a castle on a rocky spur overlooking the Allan and the Lizaine rivers. The city developed as a result of contact with both Burgundian and Germanic culture and by the end of the 14th century had become a commercial and religious centre. The second defensive wall, built in the 15th century is a reflection of the city’s prosperity, encircling as it does the original castle, through as well as the two districts of La Halle and Saint-Martin. Excavation work undertaken in 1993-1994 prior to the construction of a shopping centre in the Velotte quarter of the Saint-Martin district has enabled archeologists to define seven build periods of architectural development covering both buildings and the urban defense system. This work has also shed light on various aspects of daily and social life as experienced by the inhabitants of this area within the city walls the bucolic character of which remained intact up to the final quarter of the 19th century.
