Description: This book collects the artistic and academic life of ten women and men who have stood out not only in the teaching field at the Center for Research, Teaching and Artistic Extension (CIDEA), but also in the national and international artistic sphere. They, like many other theater artists at heart, have contributed their expertise and life experiences to the artistic environment and for the School of Scenic Art it is a pleasure to demonstrate their artistic and teaching career in this book.

Description: The book “este tren no está destinado a la gloria” (this train is not destined for glory) revolves around the metaphor of literary ferro-landscapes. Conceived as narrative nodes created around the mobility of human and material capital by train, and at the same time interdependent of the economies that move such capital, this book approaches the literary representation of the railway world in narratives located in the Panama Canal Zone, through the Central American banana enclaves and follows the migrant caravan that crosses Mexico on La Bestia (The Beast). Ravasio reveals in her study a dialectic of in/mobilities where literary ferro-landscapes narratologically correlate spatial displacement with social immobility, exposing the exiles of modernity in their inglorious journey through the Americas.

Description: This text is made up of two great nuclei of ideas. The first concerns training and historical development that allow a definition of the unique profile that the School of Art and Visual Communication offers the country through artistic education. Here we analyze the contributions of two administrative periods that are fundamental, because it is during their duration that the identity that characterizes the School as an educational and artistic institution is forged. The second part refers to the plastic-artistic, intellectual and teaching production of outstanding professors. This section characterizes the facets that distinguish the work of each author considered and gives a global idea of the values of their artistic production, their projection to the country and the artistic environment from the spheres of creation, art criticism, insertion in museums and teaching itself.

Description: Spurred by a new wave of protests around the world - from the Occupy movement, Black Lives Matter, the Arab Spring, and the various street marches against neoliberal governments throughout Latin America - Raussert examines how artistic practices in the Americas have challenged the control of public space in relation to gender, race, sexuality, class, and age in three periods (the 1920s and 1930s, the 1960s and 1970s, and the new millennium). This inter-American perspective sheds light on common utopian aspirations across time and space, as in the networked movements of indigenous, African-descended and the diasporic groups, epitomized by the Zapatista slogan: “Mientras los medios de comunicación sigan mintiendo, las paredes seguirán hablando” (As long as the media continues to lie, the walls will continue to talk). Indeed, this must-read book shows how contesting artists subvert the increasing privatization, consumerization and electronic monitoring of public space and its virtualization in the new media in our own time period. | George Yúdice (Professor of Latin American Studies and Modern Literature at the University of Miami, U.S.A.)

Description: Demoperfectocracy was the word used by the famous Costa Rican writer, Yolanda Oreamuno, to refer to the Costa Rican political system of the 1930s. The ironic spirit of the term was not accidental: at the time, various intellectuals and politicians doubted that Costa Rica was a democracy, an approach that was recovered and emphasized, starting in the 1980s, by different social researchers. The perspective that guides this book is very different: it stems from the fact that, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, Costa Rica underwent a decisive transition towards a pre-reformed democracy, in whose course periodic and competitive elections became the nexus fundamental between popular demands and public policies. The long-term result of this connection was a socially oriented political system.

Description: In this book, an attempt is made to make a portrait of how English diplomacy functioned in its relations with the Central American states, between the years from 1821 to 1915. It is a picture that we seek to paint with the most hidden details about participation of that English diplomacy in construction, for example, of the commercial practices with which Central America aspired to insert itself in the world market.
