Description: Through a selection of essays and articles by historian Ľubomir Lipták, the book explores the history of Slovakia, a landlocked country in the heart of Central Europe, at the junction of different linguistic areas. A multicultural country until the late 1930s, Slovakia became ethnically homogenous after the Second World War. This volume, edited by Roman Krakovsky, examines these transformations. It also invites us to reflect on the role of history and the historian in the city, collective identities. In Lipták's characteristically incisive style and writing, these texts present an uncompromising approach to the transformations that Slovakia and its region have undergone over the short twentieth century. They also help us to understand its present.

Description: This book offers an original analysis of the place and function of French history, politics, and culture in Antonio Gramsci’s education and reflection. Gramsci thinks about France, its history, politics, and culture, but his intention goes far beyond that. He truly uses France to think about Italy and its place in a “great and terrible world”, which at the time was shaken by the Great War, the Russian Revolution, the emergence of fascisms and the beginnings of the United States hegemony. Consisting of constant back-and-forths between France, a point of comparison more than a model, Italy and the world, this book uses the texts - first and foremost the Prison Notebooks - as a starting point to examine some of his most important concepts, such as Jacobinism or national-populism and several of his historical themes, from the Enlightenment to the French Revolution. They also explore the political and cultural aspect of Gramsci’s thought, when he takes an interest in Action Française and the philosophy of Charles Maurras, the failed coup d’état by General Boulanger or the episodes of the Dreyfus Affair. In the end, however, it is always a dual perspective, indissociably European and internationalist, that underlies “Gramsci’s France”.

Description: In recent decades, discourse promoting and valuing plurilingualism has permeated different spheres of society. It is shaped by various social players, among which the Council of Europe plays a central role in the production and circulation of discourse and ideas on plurilingualism in Europe. Materialised in various instruments, such as recommendations, guides and frames of reference, these ideas build the foundations of a discourse of authority. At the crossroads of sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and institutional anthropology, this book studies the emergence and circulation of ideas on languages within the Council of Europe through the examination of institutional texts produced between 1949 and 2008. In particular, it examines what plurilingualism is, its role and its implications for the management of Europe. It also proposes a critical reflection on the mobilisation and promotion of a certain vision of languages and plurilingualism in order to exercise power on the international scene. This book is aimed at sociolinguists, discourse analysts and anthropologists and will also be of interest to students and professionals in the politico-educational field. Zorana Sokolovska is a lecturer in sociolinguistics at the University of Fribourg and a lecturer in French linguistics at the Lucerne University of Teacher Education. Her research focuses on the role of institutions in the management of languages and their teaching-learning.
