Description: Author of two monographs on the care of abandoned children in Bordeaux published by the MSHA, Bernard Allemandou, child psychiatrist, focuses here on the fate of poor children who commit crimes. The Saint-Jean penitentiary, created in 1837 for minor boys, and the Sainte-Philomène penitentiary the following year for girls, were born of the flaw in the incarceration system practised at the time, where children were not separated from adult prisoners. Based on documents kept in the municipal archives of Bordeaux and the departmental archives of the Gironde, the author describes the functioning of these two institutions, which operated until 1870. Given the failure of the State to create special establishments, private initiative was encouraged, leaving this task to the clergy, who, as a “work of charity”, intended to give instruction to minors where “they would learn to know, to serve, to fear and above all, to love God”. From the penitentiaries to the agricultural colonies, Bernard Allemandou thus paints a portrait of a Bordeaux society torn between the necessary and saving Christian charity of the time and the fear of these delinquent children who had to live in uncomfortable buildings with uncertain financing, with a summary education and incomplete food.

Description: The Historiae philippicae by Iustinus are a quite difficult work because they are actually written by two authors: in the first century BC, Trogus, a Gallic historian, wrote a now lost universal history; several centuries later, Iustinus wrote an epitome from his text, the one we know now. Books 11 and 12 of these Historiae deal with the life of Alexander the Great, from 336 when he became king, up to his death in 323. As far back as Antiquity, Alexander’s conquest has been a very well documented subject and we are able to compare them to other Alexander’s Histories. This is why we can now draw some precious conclusions about the manner the two authors wrote their works. Trogus seems to have used several hellenistic sources, following the frame of Cleitarchos from Alexandria who presented Alexander in a very favorable way. However, thanks to other sources, Trogus eroded this image and composed his text in order to show a dark portrait of the king that Iustinus faithfully preserved : Alexander indeed appears like a decadent man. Misleaded by oriental wealth and luxuries he degenerates from his Greek culture and his noble nature to become a Persian and a tyrant. Trogus contemporary readers may have recognized behind Alexander the image of Caesar and above all Antonius : that way they were condemned by the Gallic historian who was favorable to the peace and the moral values that the new Augustus intended to champion.

Description: Between c. 1350 and 1550, English sculptors carved thousands of panels depicting religious scenes from alabaster quarries around Nottingham. Exported throughout Europe, these polychrome reliefs were originally usually assembled to form altarpieces. Their coloured epidermis, an integral part of these works that can be termed three-dimensional paintings, has now often disappeared. A multidisciplinary team (art historian, archaeologist, artist and specialist in ancient polychromy, 3D engineers and optodigital researcher) has analysed and reconstructed the polychromy of several of these English panels preserved in the Bordeaux region. The physico-chemical analyses made it possible to determine the nature of the materials used and to recreate the paints used by the alabastermen. These data were used to produce an alabaster facsimile as well as two 3D models with their digital polychromy. As the polychromy of English alabaster works is highly standardised, these examples can be considered as representative of the appearance that the vast majority of the panels must have showed. The study thus allows us to address broader themes, such as the aesthetic and symbolic qualities of the colours used by the alabastermen, or the way in which these were perceived by the medieval viewer.

Description: This fourth volume of the series AdriAtlas collects the papers presented at the International Round Table held in Bologna on May 23rd -25th 2019. It contains in total 21 contributions of French, Italian, Croatian and Slovenian scholars. The reflections focus on artisanal productions in the Adriatic region with a particular attention to five themes: craftsmanship and manufacturing between city and countryside; epigraphy, crafts and society; amphora productions; production of fine and common ware; textile production. Among the purposes of the conference, we can highlight: -to shed light on the different production methods developed in geographical contexts around the Adriatic Sea, seen as a privileged ambiance for the exchange of ideas, techniques, fashions, goods, and people; -to provide an updated, albeit partial, picture of the productive phenomenon in its various forms and its interactions with the other economic players.

Description: A letter-writer, Alexandre Dumas became a journalist by temperament and passion. From the very beginning, the young playwright has forged himself into a public figure in every sense of the word in and through the press. His career path is that of a volunteer in the media space, where he occupies almost every position: drama critic, columnist, serialist, historian of the contemporary, war correspondent, inexhaustible talker. Strong convictions drive this writing in perpetual motion: Dumas defends the democratic ideal of an authentically popular literature, engaged in the struggles of the present, and intensely interactive.

Description: The French Society of Urban History, convinced of the relevance of the geohistoric approach to question the urban fact, dedicated its 2020 annual congress, in Bordeaux, to the status and roles of the city in atlas productions. This work represents the publication of eight of the congress contributions. In its standard meaning, the atlas is a compilation that combines in a universal perspective, cartographic productions and textual commentaries. It is over the long term, from humanist productions to digital humanities and according to all meanings of the term that the authors questioned, through the prism of the city, the ambitions and practices of this singular mode of representation. Why and how to transplant the city into an atlas? How efficient is the tool in the geohistorical approach to the city? The collected contributions analyze atlases from a dual perspective: the first considers the atlas as a tool for reasoning about the city, used since the Renaissance and mainly motivated by political and military logic ; the second, based on contemporary experiences, observes the urban historian as a producer of atlases.
