    Beschreibung: Souterrains have in the past been the object of both varied and fanciful inter­pretations. Considered at different times to be places of refuge or worship, they have been attribued to periods ranging from pre-history to the French Revolu­tion. The present study, first written as a doctoral thesis, examines94 souterrains in the Limousin region and analyses their geographical and historical significance. Research has included excavation of the Bois-du-Mont souterrain at Bessines-sur-Gartempe in the Haute-Vienne depart­ment. The result of the study proves that these underground chambers are related to rural settlement during IXth to XIIIth centuries. Archaeology provides firm evidence for when these structures were tunnelled, occupied and abandoned. The disciplined methodological approach of this work is exemplary in a field where scientific analysis has so far been vir­tually non-existent.

    Beschreibung: Situated in the North of France, Bettencourt-Saint- Ouen is an open-air Middle Palaeolithic site, most probably used as a hunters’ stopping place. Five successive phases of occupation have been excavated, covering a period of 40.000 years Study of the site has revealed fondamental data lot our understanding of human occupation, as well as important informations on environmental changes to the site during the final glacial period (from the Eemian Interglacial to the lower Weichselian Pleniglacial). Distribution of finds at Bettencourt, coupled with the technology and typology of the site’s lithic industries, point to a continuity in systems of production and cultural traditions from 112,000 to 68,000 BP.

    Beschreibung: Relay-point on a roman road, the oppidum of Ambrussum is a major site concerning conditions and aspects of the romanisation in the region of Nîmes. Two houses with internal courtyards were already known and dated from the first century AD and form an insula of secteur I. Research conducted from 1976 to 1980 in secteur IV revealed a house of the same type with its dependancies. Following an analysis based on the conditions of implantation, occupation and abandonment, their architecture and distribution of the finds, these constructions appear to be an original expression of gallo-roman habitations. Situated in their local and regional contexts, they reflect the process of urbanisation and social differenciation, and of the village type exploitation existence.

    Beschreibung: Au début du siècle dernier, le sultan du Maroc vient de signer un traité qui place désormais son pays sous le protectorat de la France (30 mars 1912). À l’ombre du maréchal Lyautey, un sultan de substitution, totalement soumis aux nouveaux maîtres français, a été proclamé. Cependant, nombreux sont ceux qui, au Maroc, refusent le fait accompli et se révoltent face à la mainmise étrangère sur le pays. Ainsi, dans le Sud marocain, Moulay Ahmed el Hiba, fils d’un marabout ouest-saharien (Ma el Aïnin), se fait proclamer sultan du Jihad en 1912 ; une première fois à Tiznit, la seconde à Marrakech. Ces événements ont donné naissance à un mouvement qui pendant plus de vingt ans (1912-1934) symbolisera pour ces populations berbères et ouest-sahariennes la résistance à l’avancée inéluctable des troupes coloniales françaises et espagnoles. Fondée sur une analyse croisée d’archives inédites, aussi bien françaises que marocaines, l’auteur fait la lumière sur un événement fondateur de la conquête coloniale du Maroc. Mythifiée, récupérée ou occultée, la figure fondatrice du mouvement hibiste est encore aujourd’hui le sujet d’un conflit mémoriel ayant pour objet l’Ouest saharien.

It retraces the evolution of seigneurial residences of the Xth to XVth centuries. These elements are reinsered into the domaine and social context thanks to the drawing up of unpublished genealogies. In this imposing work a continual contact is maintained between past and present outlining the progress of archaeological research. Actual problems such as the protection of this threatened heritage are also evoked here.

    Beschreibung: Organized through the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the symposium “Lascaux and Preservation Issues in Subterranean Environments” was held in Paris on February 26 and 27, 2009 under the chairmanship of Jean Clottes. It brought together nearly three hundred participants from seventeen countries with the goal of confronting research and interventions conducted in Lascaux Cave since 2001 with the experiences gained in other countries in the domain of preservation in subterranean environments. Twelve presentations addressed questions related to disciplines such as hydrogeology, climatology and microbiology in relation to the protection and valorization of decorated caves. The talks were followed by debates allowing the experts and all other participants to freely express themselves. This volume, which constitutes the proceedings of this symposium, is composed of the studies presented during the sessions and full transcriptions of the debates. It provides both a synthesis of the conservation activities realized at Lascaux between 2001 and 2009 and the state of research and the conditions of the cave as of 2009.

    Beschreibung: Situated in South-Western Provence in the massif of Sainte-Baume, some thirty kilometres from Marseille, the Grotte des Cèdres (Var) was first excavated during the 1950s. In 1987 re-excavation took place and comprised the reexamination of conserved standing stratification. This re-examination permitted the identification of two human occupation levels, both of short periods, situated in a cool environment at the end of the Middle Pleistocene. With the identification of a new lithic industry. the discovery of the largest quantity of Tahr Rissien remains in Europe belonging to a new species, and the determination of new sub-species of Rodents and Rabbit, this site is now to be placed amongst those of major importance for the Mediterranean Europe, which is further increased by the presence of a human remain.

    Beschreibung: Si l’histoire traditionnelle de l’hérésie au Moyen Âge s’est longtemps confondue avec celle des exclus de la société, l’approche récente se focalise davantage sur les diverses autorités qui, au coeur du pouvoir, élaborèrent la norme religieuse : l’hérésie n’existe que parce que l’orthodoxie en a d’abord décidé. Il reste que, loin de se présenter comme une essence immuable, elle s’impose tout au long du Moyen Âge comme un concept et une qualification d’une très grande plasticité. L’extension progressive du domaine de l’hérésie à de nombreuses formes de dissidence finit par lui assurer le statut d’un crime englobant. Cette enquête collective repose sur la conviction que c’est encore en se situant aux marges de l’hérésie, au contact d’activités répréhensibles voisines, telles que l’usure, la sorcellerie ou encore la rébellion politique, que l’on peut le mieux saisir les principes et les mécanismes de la fabrique de l’hérésie.

    Beschreibung: Qu’on l’appelle « D-Day », « Jour J », « 6 Juin » ou « Débarquement », nulle autre précision n’est nécessaire pour évoquer l’offensive alliée en Normandie en 1944, alors même que de nombreuses opérations militaires de ce type ont été menées au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et que le sort de l’Allemagne nazie s’est joué sur le front de l’Est. Quelles sont les raisons qui expliquent que cette bataille – une parmi tant d’autres qui ont émaillé les conflits du xxe siècle – a d’emblée revêtu une dimension historique pour les contemporains ? Pourquoi précisément cette opération militaire est-elle désormais régulièrement commémorée par autant de chefs d’État sous le regard des télévisions du monde entier ? Comment expliquer le statut si particulier acquis par cet événement au fil des décennies, jusqu’au projet d’inscription des plages du Débarquement au patrimoine de l’Unesco ? En revenant à la dramatisation des enjeux d’une bataille annoncée près de quatre années à l’avance, mais aussi aux ressorts politiques, idéologiques, économiques et culturels qui ont contribué à transcender l’événement en épopée, cet ouvrage s’interroge sur la quête d’identité de chacun des acteurs nationaux à travers l’évolution de leur mémoire. Ainsi peut-on mieux comprendre la surprenante transformation de l’épisode guerrier en symbole universel de paix et de liberté.

    Beschreibung: In the 1980s and early 1990s, the municipalities of Mondeville, Grentheville, Cormelles-le-Royal and Giberville in the Calvados area of Normandy were the focus for a vast campaign of "préventive" (rescue) archeology. A few years after the close of the excavations, a considerable body of findings has amassed. By allowing us to consider areas several hundred hectares in extent, the research presented in the present volume paves the way for a full-scale approach to territorial archeology, from the emergence of the first farming communities to the metalworkers of the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age — a period of almost 5,000 years. We can observe the inhabitants settling, evolving slowly and progressively shaping the occupation of the plateau. By highlighting the relationships between Normandy and Brittany, the Paris Basin and the British Isles, the study enhances our understanding of the development and diffusion of the various regional cultures and sheds light on the pre- and protohistory of this part of the Caen Plain.

    Beschreibung: En 1626, une première compagnie par actions est formée à l’initiative de Richelieu pour mener la colonisation des Petites Antilles et organiser le trafic transatlantique. Elle repose sur les associés, des proches du cardinal, qui en possèdent le capital et en assurent la direction. En 1635, elle est réorganisée afin de pouvoir satisfaire d’une façon plus efficace les objectifs qui lui ont été fixés par la monarchie, à savoir, conquérir et peupler des terres et favoriser le commerce. Elle prend alors le nom de Compagnie des îles de l’Amérique. Sous sa conduite, les Français déjà établis à Saint-Christophe s’installent à la Guadeloupe et à la Martinique et affichent des prétentions sur la Grenade, Sainte-Croix, Saint- Martin et Saint-Barthélemy. Plusieurs milliers de colons tentent l’aventure en franchissant l’océan à la quête d’un meilleur avenir et de richesses. Les terres sont exploitées pour satisfaire les besoins de la métropole. Quelques grands domaines s’appuyant sur une main-d’œuvre constituée d’esclaves africains développent de nouvelles productions comme le sucre et l’indigo. Mais la Compagnie est bientôt confrontée à de multiples difficultés qui remettent en cause son fonctionnement et ses finalités. Les tensions dans les îles et les faibles retombées de sa politique économique conduisent les associés à cesser progressivement leurs activités à partir de 1649. Sa fin pourtant ne signifie pas l’échec de la colonisation française des Petites Antilles. L’héritage qu’elle lègue va fructifier durant les décennies suivantes et donner naissance au premier empire colonial français.

    Beschreibung: Les Éditions du Cerf comptent dans le paysage éditorial français, et pas seulement dans le domaine de l’édition religieuse. Fondées en 1929 par deux religieux dominicains dans le prolongement du succès de la revue La Vie Spirituelle, elles ont rapidement acquis, par leurs périodiques et par leurs livres, une réputation enviable dans l’aile marchante de l’Église de France : mouvement ecclésiologique (collection « Unam Sanctam » du père Congar) ; mouvement biblique (Bible dite de Jérusalem) ; mouvement patristique (collection « Sources chrétiennes ») ; mouvement liturgique (revue La Maison-Dieu) ; mouvement théologique (collection « Cogitatio Fidei »). Elles ont été ainsi un des vecteurs majeurs en France de l’aggiornamento conciliaire voulu par Jean XXIII. Mais leur histoire n’a pas été un long fleuve tranquille : les Éditions du Cerf ont traversé bien des orages du fait de leurs positions d’ouverture sur les grandes crises du xxe siècle : condamnation par Rome de l’Action française, guerre d’Espagne, Seconde Guerre mondiale, guerre froide ou guerre d’Algérie. C’est ce parcours mouvementé, conjuguant histoire générale et histoire religieuse, que retrace ce livre, rédigé de première main par un universitaire familier de tels événements, avec les archives des provinces dominicaines françaises. Il éclaire tout un pan de l’histoire du catholicisme en France au xxe siècle.

Although saved front unscientific excavation, they have however not escaped damage from agricultural practice or its modernisation. Presented in this publication are the results from recent rescue excavations which outline the importance of later prehistoric occupation in this traditional area of contact. Put at the disposition of the reader, is a documentation of an interest which justifies the measures taken to protect these monuments.

    Beschreibung: This work presents the findings of research conducted from 1988 to 1993 near the étang de Berre. On the basis of systematic surveying, soundings and the excavation of a Gallo - Roman establishment,F Trément situates the major sites of Saint-Blaise and the Fossæ Marianæ in a globally and dynamically perceived space. Using earth and life sciences (geomorphology, sedimentology, palynology…). and with recourse to texts and iconography, the archaeologist broadens his focus, to encompass the landscape in its entirety. This microregion is characterised by numerous closed depressions, which explain the high population density during the Neolithic, the Iron Age and in Antiquity, and constitute sedimentary records of the evolution of the surroundings. The author seeks to understand how the successive waterside communities adapted to this shifting and harsh environment, how they appropriated the space and set about exploiting it, more or less consciously, leaving their mark, more or less enduring.

    Beschreibung: Construction of the northern TGV line resulted in the rescue excavation of Riencourt-lès-Bapaume. For the first time, it was possible in excavate a Middle Palaeolithic open air site on an area of 10,000 m2. The preliminary contributions brought together in this volume represent analysis completed on short notice using samples drawn from abundant lithic material (approximately 86,000 pieces). The archaeological levels dispersed in the lœssic sequence of the first part of the last glacial, have yielded lithic artifacts which can be assigned to many industries which illustrate the complexity of the Middle Paleolithic. The lithic assemblage of level CA demonstrates the presence of the production of Levallois flakes and another for the production of blades. The functional analysis have shown that both flake and blade reduction technologies are associated with the specific tool functions.

Although an interface between the southern and north-eastem branches, it is also the exclusive preserve of chalk flint. Applying the "technological system" concept, the author seeks to identify the skills levels of the flint knappers, asks whether expert knappers existed, and explores the spatial breakdown of the operational chain and the methods of acquiring and distributing raw materials in order to address the question of the socio-economic organization of flint tool production. Her exploration is based on the study of twelve reference series comprising over 100.000 flint artifacts in a multivariate analysis making use, among other approaches, of cladistics, the first time this technique has ever been applied to this field. By systematically referring to anthropological and historical questions, this book constitutes an important contri­bution to the study of the development of Neolithic communities across Europe.

    Beschreibung: In this work, Dominique Sordoillet accomplishes the difficult task of rendering a previously obscure discipline accessible to everyone. This work originates from her doctoral dissertation thesis, which received unanimous praise for its methodological and scientific rigor. Drawing on elements from the earth sciences, she studied the stratigraphy of three exemplary archaeological sites. The prehistoric sites of Gardon, Montou and Saint-Alban were thus subject to a precise micromorphological analysis, which considers a stratigraphy as a sedimentary record of time. Through a classification of the deposits into two large families based on their formation processes, she distinguishes the occupation facies, created by human activities, from the abandonment facies, which are characteristic of natural sedimentary and post-sedimentary processes. Based on these sedimentological data, replaced in their chronological and cultural contexts, she proposes different occupation scenarios and interpretations of the evolution of human activities, rituals and construction. This short, well illustrated presentation is written with a simple vocabulary and includes a glossary, all of which make it an effective tool for understanding the methods and objectives of micromorphology in the direct interest of field interpretations and methods.

No longer an urban area from the second century AD onwards, it remained rural until the eighteenth century.Organised according to a framework which respected the relief, with both water supply system and drainage, this district contained a group of houses whose plans, construction details, decoration and domestic finds are studied both individually and from a socio-economic point of view.

Mais de quoi parle-t-on au juste? « Je connais tel élu et il a le bras long, il pourra me trouver une place à la mairie! » Si la phrase est courante, quelles réalités et quels fantasmes recouvre-t-elle précisément ? Alors que le phénomène du clientélisme a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs études en sociologie et sciences politiques, cette pratique originale a moins retenu l’attention des historiens du politique. Spécialiste de l’histoire politique française contemporaine, Julie Bour entend étudier les acteurs, causes, modalités et limites du clientélisme via une approche quantitative originale et inédite, reposant sur l’exploitation statistique de corpus importants de courriers de recommandation, dépassant parfois les milliers de lettres entre les élus et leurs administrés et portant sur des dossiers sensibles, symboliques ou plus prosaïques (emplois, décorations, service militaire, aide sociale, affaires communales, etc.). Elle concentre son analyse sur un espace test particulier qui est celui de la Lorraine et l’appréhende sur le temps long qui va de la IIIe République aux années 2000. Au travers d’études de cas portant sur des élus célèbres (Louis Jacquinot, Pierre Messmer, François Guillaume, Christian Pierret) ou plus anonymes (Jean Bernard, Jules Develle, André Savard) qui représentent l’ensemble des courants politiques, le clientélisme apparaît pour ce qu’il est réellement : une pratique très répandue (et non limité à un Sud méditerranéen arriéré), qui structure la vie politique locale, mobilise tout un réseau d’intercesseurs relais, crée des solidarités fines entre l’élu et les électeurs, et joue un rôle parfois déterminant dans l’élection et la longévité politique de certains parlementaires. Cette pratique, ancrée sur la durée, institutionnalisée au point d’être déculpabilisée, interroge la démocratie dans ses limites en termes de corruption et de clientélisme.

The study includes an examination of the finds, most of which are of 6th century date, and an analysis of the faunal remains. The latter shows not only that domesticated species differed from those of the Iron-Age but also that eating habits had changed. The resulting picture is one of significant and long-lasting Romanisation of innerCorsica, and of ongoing trade relations with the rest of the Mediterranean region, even after the Van­dal invasion. The publication marks a major step towards a new understanding of this period of Corsican history.

    Beschreibung: Three Upper Palaeolithic sites have been discovered during the construction of the A5 motorway between Melun and Troyes.Marolles-sur-Seine, in the Seine-et-Mame area, is related to the other Magdaleman sites discovered in the Paris basin. The excellent preservation of the finds (silex, animal bones, heated stones) has made possible a palaeoethnological study of this horse hunting site, a type of research rarely possible in a rescue excavation Technological analysis of the lithic from Lailly (Aungnacian), in the Yonne area, and Fontvannes (Perigordian ?), in the Aube area, has revealed the production techniques for three kinds of artefacts blades, flakes and bladelets. These two sites increase the importance of the Vanne valley in the understanding of occupation of the south east of the Paris basin.Following the publication about the Middle Palaeolithic sites of the Sens area (dAf number 47), this volume renews the study of early Prehistory in this region

    Beschreibung: The plan to extend the TGV high-speed rail link from Lyon to Marseille was a major scientific challenge, comprising 300 km of transect through archeologically highly-sensitive areas and notably the Rhone corridor — a key western European trunk route since prehistoric times. A rescue operation unprecedented in terms of its size and complexity was initiated to take up the challenge and in this volume, Odile Maufras presents the results of the campaign covering the medieval period. No less than 14 separate digs focused on sites of non-village rural occupation from the seventh to the fifteenth centuries. The sites are first described in a series of concise monographs whose standardized layout will help readers easily find their way. The second part studies key environmental aspects, material culture and cultural practices in a series of well-documented and presented overviews and analytical articles. The work throws new light on the sort of isolated habitats which are generally so difficult to pinpoint and updates the geographical and environmental picture of the central Rhone valley. It returns to the question of a break between late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, while at the same time refining our knowledge of organizational development in the countryside.

    Beschreibung: The history of Montbeliard began in the late 9th century with the construction of a castle on a rocky spur overlooking the Allan and the Lizaine rivers. The city developed as a result of contact with both Burgundian and Germanic culture and by the end of the 14th century had become a commercial and religious centre. The second defensive wall, built in the 15th century is a reflection of the city’s prosperity, encircling as it does the original castle, through as well as the two districts of La Halle and Saint-Martin. Excavation work undertaken in 1993-1994 prior to the construction of a shopping centre in the Velotte quarter of the Saint-Martin district has enabled archeologists to define seven build periods of architectural development covering both buildings and the urban defense system. This work has also shed light on various aspects of daily and social life as experienced by the inhabitants of this area within the city walls the bucolic character of which remained intact up to the final quarter of the 19th century.

Infirmières ou pharmaciennes, responsables de services d’hôpitaux et d’hospices, ou gardes-malades à domicile, ce sont les « bonnes » sœurs du xixe siècle. Figures de la charité, elles sont aussi les chevilles ouvrières du système public de santé dont elles accompagnent la médicalisation. Dans une société confrontée à une nouvelle pauvreté massive et alors que l’Église catholique s’inquiète de la déchristianisation populaire, les sœurs soignantes répondent aux attentes sociales et sanitaires, religieuses et morales de leur temps. La laïcisation républicaine signe-t-elle leur disparition ? Rien n’est moins sûr à en regarder leur présence dans Paris au début du xxe siècle. S’appuyant sur de nombreuses archives des couvents et des institutions hospitalières, cette enquête questionne la vocation des sœurs soignantes dans leur quotidien auprès des pauvres de la capitale. Elle propose une histoire du care qui éclaire les enjeux profanes et spirituels de la relation de soin.

    Du clos Saint-Lazare à la gare du Nord (2022)

    Beschreibung: La léproserie Saint-Lazare, signalée pour la première fois en 1122, était située à proximité de la ville de Paris, dans le faubourg Saint-Laurent. Elle devint en 1632 le berceau de la congrégation de la Mission que saint Vincent de Paul avait fondée quelques années auparavant. D’imposants bâtiments furent alors construits pour abriter une importante communauté. La petite église gothique accolée aux nouveaux bâtiments reçut la tombe du saint fondateur, devenant un haut lieu de pèlerinage que des tableaux de grands maîtres devaient dignifier. La maison et son clos attenant, qui comptait encore 52 hectares de terres en 1789, étaient devenus un domaine préservé dans un Paris toujours plus densément peuplé. Par la suite, cet espace subit des transformations marquantes au cours des xixe et xxe siècles. Accueillant d’importants projets de lotissement dès la Restauration (Nouveau Quartier Poissonnière), ce quartier situé près de la gare du Nord fut l’objet, sous le Second Empire, de réaménagements dont James de Rothschild est le principal acteur. Transformée tour à tour en prison puis en hôpital, la maison survécut aux aléas de l’histoire jusqu’à la démolition partielle des bâtiments en 1940. Seule la nouvelle chapelle et l’infirmerie bâties par Louis-Pierre Baltard témoignent encore aujourd’hui de l’existence du clos Saint-Lazare. Une infirmerie récemment restaurée par la Ville de Paris et qui abrite depuis 2015 la médiathèque Françoise- Sagan. C’est non pas tant l’histoire de la prison pour femmes qui vit passer Louise Michel et Mata Hari que ce livre tente d’éclaircir, que celle de la maison Saint-Lazare et de son clos et, à travers elle, l’économie de la maison mère d’une des principales congrégations de la France d’Ancien Régime et son adaptation successive à différents usages.

Le bocage a perdu le lien qu'il avait depuis son origine avec l'activité agricole : il reste une composante du paysage rural mais il n'est plus le cadre nécessaire du travail des agriculteurs. C'est la modification la plus importante qu'il ait connu depuis sa création. Le bocage n'est pas un milieu naturel : c'est un paysage construit ; il n'est pas là de toute éternité, mais il a été fabriqué et entretenu par des générations d'agriculteurs qui avaient besoin de haies pour pratiquer à la fois la culture et le pâturage. L'objet de l'ouvrage d'Annie Antoine est de porter un regard d'historien sur le paysage bocager de l'Ouest de la France : explorer les liens forts et durables tissés entre un paysage et ses habitants, lier la construction du bocage et ses transformations à l'évolution des sociétés rurales qui, de la fin du Moyen Âge aux mutations agricoles contemporaines, l'ont utilisé et transformé.

    Beschreibung: Les trois derniers siècles du Moyen Âge voient le déploiement, au sein du duché de Bretagne, de multiples « gens de savoir ». Personnages ayant bénéficié d’un enseignement supérieur ou d’une formation sur le terrain, ils déploient, parfois en les cumulant, leurs compétences dans divers domaines : l’Église, l’État ducal, l’administration judiciaire, le notariat, etc. Le présent ouvrage en est l’analyse, réalisée à partir d’un corpus de données prosopographiques constitué de 5 599 individus (Bretons ou étrangers venus en Bretagne), mis au jour grâce aux sources publiées, mais surtout au dépouillement de 5 238 cartons et registres d’archives. Les parcours universitaires et professionnels, les stratégies, les réussites et les échecs, les réseaux, les biens des gens de savoir ont ainsi été mis en exergue. Majoritairement étudiants à Paris, à Angers, et juristes de formation, ils reviennent de plus en plus dans le duché afin d’y faire carrière, en particulier avec le développement de l’État et des administrations ducale et judiciaire, au cours du xve siècle. Très polyvalents, il est fréquent qu’ils exercent deux ou trois fonctions différentes (évêque et chancelier, secrétaire et sénéchal, chanoine et médecin), auxquelles ils accèdent par toutes les techniques et ruses imaginables. Hommes de savoir, hommes de pouvoir, les plus efficaces d’entre eux veillent aussi à se garantir des revenus et un patrimoine mobilier et immobilier parfois très importants.

Les quatorze contributions réunies ici interrogent les modalités de cette relation en balayant plusieurs siècles d’histoire sur trois continents (Europe, Amérique, Afrique). D’abord, les questions environnementales participent de l’affirmation des pouvoirs : les catastrophes naturelles et le surgissement des risques apparaissent comme des moments privilégiés de cette coconstruction. Ensuite, la définition de l’environnement constitue un attribut essentiel des institutions et des acteurs qui, pour défendre des milieux, sont parfois amenés à les politiser. À travers les aménagements et la gestion des confits, l’environnement apparaît enfin en tant que sujet de négociations et objet de jeux d’acteurs complexes au sein desquels les pouvoirs publics jouent un rôle souvent difficile, à l’interface entre des intérêts divergents.

    Beschreibung: One of the large international and interdisciplinary research projects on the Palaeolithic of France during the middle of the 20th century was the excavation of the abri Pataud (Les Eyzies, Dordogne). From this project, directed by Hallam L. Movius, Jr., came innovations in excavation technique and artifact analysis that have contributed to the methodological synthesis underlying current research. The abri Pataud is one of the key sequences of the earlier Upper Palaeolithic in the Southwest. The publication began in 1975 but was left unfinished because of the death of Pr Movius in 1987. His closest collaborators have summarized here the results of the project, including unpublished studies of the Protomagdalenian, Middle Perigordian, and Aurignacian occupations, new radiocarbon dates, a reappraisal of the geochronology, and an extensively annotated catalogue of Aurignacian and Perigordian sites in Dordogne which allows the abri Pataud to be seen in its regional context.

Il montre les reconfigurations qui s’y opèrent à l’heure postcoloniale en proposant des échelles d’observation complémentaires - internationale, nationale et locale. L’ouvrage revisite par ailleurs quelques-unes des controverses qui se sont développées autour du conflit à propos de l’instrumentalisation de l’aide, de ses liens avec le politique, de la réception des opérations de secours sur le terrain ou encore de la naissance du sans-frontiérisme et du témoignage. Il revient ainsi sur la place occupée par la crise du Biafra dans l’histoire de l’aide humanitaire.

    Beschreibung: In advance of the construction of an underground parking lot on the edge of the Saint-Georges quarter in the city of Lyon, on the right bank of the Saône, a team of Inrap archaeologists conducted an excavation between 2002 and 2004 with the goal of reconstructing the nature of the human installation from the beginning of Antiquity. Strongly supported by previous research and enriched by several complementary disciplines, the long and complex preventive excavation of the Parc Saint-Georges provided an opportunity to reconstruct the history of a riverbank with a difficult natural topography, which was gradually liberated from the river course, while not completely breaking from its influence. At this site, we find key evidence for the genesis of the formation of the alluvial plain of Lyon. At the end of the Protohistoric period, this was the location of the confluence of the original Rhone and Saône rivers, and then that of the new course of the Saône. The vitality of the fluvial network and port activities at Lugdunum are clearly illustrated by the discovery of a pier in association with a ferry dated to the end of the 1st century ad, and five heavy-tonnage barges dated to the 2nd and 3rd centuries. After a period of decreased occupation during the Early Middle Ages, the sector was progressively urbanized starting in the 12th century. At the center of the excavation, a zone with no construction was to be the future site of the port of Sablet. In the 16th century, this fluvial port was well established within the urban framework of the quarter. Seven fishwell boats provide evidence of commercial fishing activities. Significant changes were made in the second half of the 17th century in order to create a monumental port. A boat, which perhaps served for the transport of heavy merchandise, is dated to the middle of the 18th century. Until the end of the 19th century, the construction of the Fulchiron quay deprived the sector of direct access to the river, the bank was modified to accommodate the fluvial port of the quarter, and the environment was composed of "waterfront" houses. The significant historical data presented in this publication, obtained through a thorough exploitation of the information contributed by this excavation, represents a decisive advance in archaeological research, allowing a reconstruction of the early evolution of a major fluvial zone of the city of Lyon.

    Beschreibung: Fine Middle Palaeolithic sites between Montereau (Seine-et-Marne) and Troyes (Aube) were excavated over large areas during the construction of the A5 motorway : these researches have allowed a renewed approach to this type of open-air deposit. the detailed analysis of the stratified lithic material and the pedo-seditnentary phases have supported the chronostratigraphical attributions : the successions of archaeological levels lie between 200 000 and 40 000 years B.C. The Micoquian industry is recognised at Vinneufl/Les Hauts Massous (Yonne) whilst the Mousterian industries carry on on the sites of the Vanne valley (Aube). This volume constitutes the first survey of the Middle Palaeolithic occupation of this part of the Paris basin, placed in its geological context.

    Beschreibung: The Aubrac plateau and its foothills have been studied by a multi-disciplinary team of archaeologists, historians, ethnologists and environmentalists. This research has shown that the region, despite its reputation as a hostile environment for humans, has a surprisingly rich archaeological potential. Numerous written documents and an exceptionally well preserved environment allowed the spatiotemporal framework of this research to be defined. This work shows how the Domerie (hospital) of Aubrac, which amassed numerous pasturelands, fossilized the habitat since the High Middle Ages. It presents the forms of agropastoral habitats that existed during the 11th to 13th centuries, which is one of the major themes of this study. Through the study of permanent (was) and temporary (buron) agricultural exploitation sites, located between 1100 and 1300 m altitude, it contributes to our knowledge of a rural mountain society during the Middle Ages.

L’auteur montre comment des réseaux autour d’Alfred Naquet participent à un clientélisme républicain et quelles sont les contradictions de ce parlementaire face à ces pratiques, ainsi que ses velléités de réformes constitutionnelles. Celles-ci s’inscrivant dans la quête d’une « vraie république » de certains radicaux au tournant des années 1880, oblitérée dans la mémoire républicaine du fait de l’engagement de certains d’entre eux dans le boulangisme. Enfin l’auteur montre comment Alfred Naquet passe durant sa vie politique d’acteur critique de la corruption électorale sous l’Ordre moral à la place d’accusé de corruption durant le scandale de Panama, scandale qui révèle des conflits normatifs autour de la question de la corruption.

De la promulgation des Articles organiques du 18 germinal an X à la Séparation des Églises et de l’État, l’étude du pluralisme protestant permet de définir de nouveaux espaces ainsi que de nouvelles et multiples formes de structuration institutionnelle. L’existence de lignes de partage externes, visibles au travers des modalités de coexistence, et internes, appréhendables par les points de tension inhérents à cette pluralité, révèle, quant à elle, les différents traits d’une identité protestante qui ne se conçoit que dans la diversité. Au-delà de ses divergences, cette minorité active fait preuve d’une vision collective et spatiale : par la création d’un territoire concurrent de l’Église catholique, par sa reconstruction institutionnelle, par ses réseaux, par ses engagements politiques, par la relecture de son histoire, elle se forge une identité originale et prétend jouer un rôle moteur dans la société de son temps.

Il propose, en définitive, un tableau totalement inédit des mobilités sociales bourgeoises, entre 1600 et 1824.

Lyon, federal capital of the Cauls and later capital of the Burgundian kings. was from the IVth to VIIIth centuries an ecclesiastical centre of prime importance. The remains oftwo churches and of a baptistery forming an épiscopal group (one of the first to be completely excavated). the basilicas built on the tombs of saints and the graveyards, are evidence of the creation of a new Christian architecture, respecting antique traditions, and of the Christianisation of funerary practices. Thorough analysis of the archaeological evidence, confronted with archivai sources and documents, confirms the vitality and prestige of Lugdunum christianum.

En opposition au modèle asilaire développé au xixe siècle, cette désinstitutionnalisation valorisait une prise en charge de la maladie mentale fondée sur les ressources communautaires et les services ambulatoires. Mais est-ce pour autant la fin de l’asile ? En retraçant l’histoire des modalités de sortie de l’asile dans le monde francophone du xixe siècle, cet ouvrage constate la nature mythique de la désinstitutionnalisation. Si on a bien fermé quelques asiles et libéré des malades mentaux pour les réintégrer dans la communauté, on était loin d’atteindre les ambitions des réformateurs de l’après-guerre. En Europe comme en Amérique du Nord, la déshospitalisation s’est en effet déployée tardivement par rapport aux proclamations théoriques et aux injonctions légales, à des rythmes différents selon les régions et de manière souvent conflictuelle. C’est sur les enjeux et les conséquences de ce phénomène historique majeur pour nos sociétés que revient cet ouvrage.

The most interesting of them commemorate a performance in the amphitheatre (figures of gladiators and venatores, scenes showing the spectators and the pompa witch opens the minus) and give the name of the benefactor, Romulus, owner of the villa, whose munificence has provided the performance. The study is completed by a history of the main dwelling-house through the successive transformations of this ground-plan and décor. This publication provides an exceptionally valuable illustration of the life and behavior of local Gallo-Roman notables during the IInd century AD

    Beschreibung: This volume presents important results not only for archaeology in Provence but also increases our knowledge of the Mediterranean world at the very begining of the Middle Ages. The recent excavations of Saint-Blaise oppidum, near the Rhône delta, have brought to light the different stages of the reoccupation, from the 5th to the 7th century, of this protohistoric site. The ceramic assemblage testifies the importance of trade: red slip wares, amphorae, grey coarse wares from North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean and Liguria, regional slip wares (DS.P.), etc. The discovery of glass-ware with christian motifs and of vitrified crucibles indicates the existence of glass-working; stone, bone and metal objects, the coins, the fauna, especially the abundant remains of shellfish consumed, enrich the image of the life on this oppidum, one of the most important in Provence during this period of crisis and of change.

    Beschreibung: The excavations carried out on the lines of the A28 an A29 motorways have brought to light two sites from the Middle Palacolithic (-300 000 - -30 000). The desposits at Pucheuil and at Etoutteville (Haute-Normandie) yielded important lithic series with numerous reassemblies of waste flakes. At Pucheuil, two human occupations were observed in the context of a doline. They ear individualized by their particular technological traditions which both stem from the santé chain of production : the Levallois technique. This, in association with a volumetric conception of the nucleus which resembles those of the Upper Palaeolithic, characterises the laminar production of Etoutteville. The spatial analysis of the reassembled groups of material identify the site as a knapping workshop. These results, complemented by a presentation of the geomorphological and stratigraphical frameworks, represent a solid contribution to our knowledge of the Prehistory of north-west Europe.

Le nouveau département croît rapidement. À mesure que l’effectif des commis affectés à la gestion des affaires de Marine augmente, des subdivisions, les « bureaux », sont mises en place. Ces derniers sont eux-mêmes divisés en « détails », qui forment le dernier maillon de la chaîne administrative. Le nombre des bureaux s’adapte à l’évolution des besoins. On en ouvre, d’autres sont supprimés ou fusionnent pour donner naissance à de nouvelles entités. Cette subdivision en bureaux persiste jusqu’en 1786, année où Castries réorganise les branches existantes en quatre grandes directions. Les contributions réunies dans ce volume s’intéressent à cette évolution de l’administration centrale de la Marine de 1669 à la Révolution. Elles se penchent également sur les tâches quotidiennes des hommes qui y travaillent, sur leur environnement matériel, ainsi que sur leur recrutement et leurs carrières.

    Beschreibung: From 1995 to 1997, four early medieval sites were excavated in the Fougères region as part of archaeological research work carried out prior to the construction of the A84 motarway. As the sites all date from the same period, a comprehensive research plan was implemented from the outset, with special emphasis on paleo-environmental analysis and examination of pottery finds. Examination of the three Carolingian settlement sites, as well as a ford from the same period, reveals an organised, interactive approach to environmental management of the surrounding lands (land division, ditch Systems. tracks, development of a peatcovered valley floor), which were developed and systematically exploited from the 7th to 10th century. The present volume provides a significant contribution to our understanding of early medieval rural settlements in Brittany, an area of study which has hitherto received little attention from archaeologists The research is enhanced by an analysis of bio-archaeological data from the sites, showing the impact of agro-pastoral activities on the landscape and vegetation in nearby areas.

    Beschreibung: For about ten years numerous studies have been carried out in France about roman lamps. This one, for the first time and for a masters’ degree research, is oriented toward the systematic study of productions from several potters’ workshops in Montans (Tarn), ail from welldated archaeological context. More than a simple descriptive inventory, the author gives us a chronology of the Ist and IInd centuries. Her analysis of three associated criteria (decoration/type/sig nature, mark), based upon the study of 900 pieces, reveals some original aspects of the potters’ practice and leads to interesting interpretations about the technique used most of the time in Montans which consists in making moulds from lamps already in use.

Dès le temps de la lutte et à la sortie de cette phase de longues et intenses convulsions, la question de la place et du rôle des femmes a été soulevée, souvent par les acteurs et les actrices eux-mêmes. Elle a plus encore retenu l’attention de la recherche scientifique à dater des années 1970, quand les revendications féministes ont tait irruption dans le monde intellectuel et sur l’avant-scène publique. En revanche, les questions liées à la catégorie de genre n’ont été prises en compte que tout récemment et de façon inégale en fonction de l’aire géographique. Ce champ d’investigation relève davantage encore actuellement d’un chantier en pleine ébullition que d’un jardin à la française.     Beschreibung: This volume is the first of the series “Archéologie et grands travaux”, created within the DAF series to welcome the publication of large scale rescue excavations, and in part financed by developers of projects in rural or urban situations. Discovered during excavations carried out before construction work on the northern TGV line, the site of jablines uncovered a neolithic flint mine which became the object, for the first time in France, of large scale excavation. More than 1 000 features had been located and 58 shafts completly explored. The results of these studies conducted by a pluridisplinary team are presented here in detail. Finally, the site is placed within its regional environment and compared to sites of the same type in France and the rest of Europe.

    Beschreibung: Discovered during the construction of the A5 motorway, the early metalworking site of the Clérimois (Yonne) delivered the remains of some ten workshops which produced iron between the 4th century B.C. and the 5th century A. D. The published results are many: descriptions and typologies of the structures (18 furnaces studied), anthracology and analyses of the ores and slags. The study of the forges has allowed an estimation of the overall production: 5 000 tonnes of iron from 15 500 tonnes of smelted ore. Four fifths of this iron was produced between the end of the La Tène period and the 2nd century A.D. by large furnaces equipped with systems for removing the slag. These data can already be considered as a reference in the study of ancient metallurgy.

    Beschreibung: Vestiges of Gallo-Roman workshops that were in activity between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD in the city of Augustodunum were found in the course of work carried out at the Lycée militaire in Autun. The workshop buildings are described in detail and situated in their urban setting. The different crafts activities are studied closely: metalworking with copper and iron alloys, ceramics, crafts of bone. This work has enhanced our knowledge of the chain of production in metallurgical crafts in particular. Fresh data on the manufacture of common objects such as brass fibulae and bells of bronze coated iron sheet is obtained from the analysis of mould fragments, of furnace remains and of forge slag and waste. Crafts emerge as a major feature of the economy in the city of the Aedui, according to processes already identified at Bibracte. The rich documentation of this work constitutes a significant contribution to research on crafts in ancient times.

Evidence of different cultural groups passing through the Bresse area of the Jura confirms the Franche- Comlé’s rote as a crossroads.

    Beschreibung: The abundance of megaliths on the cost of Brittany has hidden for a long time the existence of megaliths inside the peninsula This work summarizes four years on the field (1982-1985) and brings new informations about this type of architecture, ignored until now, through three monuments from the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. Laboratory studies add to classical field data informations allowing to replace the megaliths in their environment and to demonstrate the existence of an economic system based upon exchange, ending the myth of autarky inside “the large forest”. This work also analyses modem acculturations of these monuments settled in an area where celtic and arthurian legend is still very much alive.

    Beschreibung: Ce livre sur l’histoire du service de formation des jeunes en Algérie (SFJA) est le fruit d’une recherche collaborative menée avec l’Association nationale-SJFA. Le SFJA a été conçu en 1958 à la suite de la crise du 13 mai. Si à l’origine son objectif était d’encadrer les adolescents non scolarisés dans le cadre de la contre-insurrection, à la suite du discours de Constantine ses missions furent élargies pour en faire un des acteurs de la généralisation de la scolarisation en Algérie, le SFJA intervenant là où l’Éducation nationale n’était pas présente. Organisme hybride, civil et militaire, son rôle était de prendre en charge l’instruction générale et préprofessionnelle des jeunes non alphabétisés. Le SFJA a été une expérience inédite d’une politique menée au titre de la jeunesse dans un contexte de contre-insurrection, la volonté des pouvoirs publics étant de lui faire porter un discours en faveur de « l’Algérie nouvelle » puis de « l’association ». Pour ce faire des équipes mixtes de monitrices (« européennes » et « musulmanes » selon les termes de l’époque) furent organisées pour travailler avec les filles et les femmes afin de les instruire et de faire passer ce message d’intégration. Les monitrices du SFJA sont parmi les premières femmes envoyées par l’armée en zone opérationnelle pour travailler au contact entre civils et militaires, à l’image des « unités de mission féminine » créées en 2009 par les États-Unis pour intervenir en Irak et en Afghanistan. En effet, cette histoire méconnue inspire aujourd’hui les stratèges. Pour réaliser cette recherche, les archives civiles et militaires ont été confrontées à l’expérience des témoins. Le livre propose ainsi une écriture originale articulant l’histoire du SFJA à une biographie collective des ex-monitrices sous la forme d’un récit choral, permettant de connaître au plus près les formes prises par cette politique de la jeunesse, pour les filles et les garçons, dans le contexte de la fin de la guerre d’Algérie.

L’ouvrage approfondit ensuite l’étude des coopératives, en centrant le regard sur le cas exemplaire du latifondo céréalier de la Sicile intérieure, qui permet d’observer l’influence des structures agraires sur les formes de l’action collective. Par un jeu constant sur les variations d’échelles, sont ainsi étudiées à travers le prisme des coopératives agricoles les transformations des campagnes françaises et italiennes, au cours de la première moitié du xxe siècle.

Son histoire révèle l’évolution des besoins domestiques d’entretien du linge, elle renvoie aux modifications des notions de propre et de sale, elle révèle les modalités de mise en place du machinisme industriel. La machine à laver est donc le lieu de cristallisation d’enjeux considérables, où sont impliqués de multiples acteurs : l’Etat, les constructeurs, les usagers, c’est-à-dire les femmes. Tous ont contribué à constituer cet espace d’échange, qui a fait que cet objet se crée, circule, se fait connaître et acquiert progressivement une existence sociale. Par le détour de la machine à laver, l’ouvrage de Quynh Delaunay nous invite à une lecture désaliénée des objets du quotidien.

Ces machines d’étoffe remplies d’air chaud ou d’hydrogène soulèvent un immense enthousiasme. Le vol humain devient une réalité accomplissant l’idéal prométhéen de maîtrise de l’homme sur la matière. Au-delà de l’histoire bien connue de l’invention, l’ambition de cet ouvrage est de considérer les premières expériences aérostatiques comme un objet à part entière de l’histoire culturelle des Lumières, en cherchant à qualifier les réceptions différenciées de l’innovation et les pratiques sociales qu’elle engendre, au plus près de l’évènement. Échappant un temps aux inventeurs, à l’Académie des sciences et au gouvernement, l’aérostation devient en France une invention partagée par de nombreux amateurs qui construisent un espace public de la technique dont l’expression culmine lors des envols. L’analyse de l’organisation financière et matérielle des entreprises de vol menées dans différentes villes de province en 1784, révèle le modèle utopique d’une économie symbolique mettant en scène le consensus des élites éclairées et du peuple autour du ballon, devenu emblème du progrès. L’expérience qui démontre en place publique les effets des fluides aériens, alors à la pointe d’une chimie en « révolution », se transforme en une véritable fête des Lumières. Mais en interpellant les sens autant que la raison, la radicalité bouleversante de l’envol en fragilise également l’euphorie. Par cette étude, c’est à la fois une cartographie des savoirs et des pratiques, une lecture des milieux urbains et des publics de la France des années 1780 qui s’esquisse.

    Beschreibung: La question de la protection des réfugiés est d’une brûlante actualité. Elle ne peut cependant être bien comprise qu’en explorant son histoire, qui est particulièrement mal connue. L’objectif de ce premier volume publié par le Comité d’histoire de l’Office français pour la protection des réfugiés et des apatrides, à partir d’archives en grande majorité inédites, est de contribuer à remédier à cette méconnaissance. Il porte sur les années 1920 à 1960 et concerne la France et le monde occidental. En tenant compte des nouvelles orientations de la recherche, l’ouvrage a une approche globale du réfugié, et produit les éléments d’une histoire qui érige celui-ci en sujet et non en simple objet de projections des politiques publiques, des mobilisations associatives et des programmes humanitaires. Il permet ainsi de rejoindre la centralité de la figure du réfugié au xxe siècle comme concept-limite mettant en tension les fondements de l’État-nation. Peut-on dire que la protection des réfugiés en France des années vingt aux années cinquante est marquée par des ruptures de pratiques, de normes et d’acteurs significatives ou au contraire, les éléments de continuité l’emportent-ils ? Comment comprendre les articulations entre le national et l’international dans une période de mise en place d’un droit des réfugiés par la Société des Nations puis par l’Organisation des Nations unies avec la convention de 1951 ? Comment mesurer le tournant que constituent la Seconde Guerre mondiale et la création de l’Ofpra en 1952 ? Comment analyser la création d’une institution administrative, qui succède à une gestion nationale et internationale de type consulaire mise en place pour les réfugiés russes et arméniens depuis l’entre-deux- guerres ? L’évolution souvent soulignée à partir des exils allemands et autrichiens, notamment juifs, vers une individualisation du statut de réfugié, c’est-à-dire le passage d’une protection collective, par groupes nationaux, à un statut, celui de 1951 avec la convention de Genève, intégrant la crainte de la persécution et une instruction individualisée est-elle véritablement opératoire ? Ce sont à ces différentes questions que les contributeurs de cet ouvrage essaient d’apporter des éléments de réponse à travers une sociohistoire des pratiques et des acteurs étatiques et transnationaux.

    Beschreibung: Fondé par de Gaulle au printemps 1947, le Rassemblement du peuple français (RPF) se dote d’un puissant service d’ordre pour se protéger de la violence communiste. S’inspirant d’un modèle de gestion militante de la violence politique élaboré depuis la fin du xixe siècle par la droite nationaliste française (des Commissaires de Déroulède aux Dispos des Croix-de-Feu), ce puissant appareil de sécurité, incarné par des chefs charismatiques (colonel Rémy, Dominique Ponchardier), met au point un protocole efficace pour sécuriser les meetings et campagnes d’affichage. Avec ses gros bras et sa « brigade volante », le RPF tient la rue et permet au Général d’exister politiquement. L’ouvrage questionne la nature paramilitaire de ce service d’ordre (niveau d’effectifs, présence d’armes, sur-représentation de militaires, fonctionnement autoritaire et dimension offensive), interroge son rapport banalisé à la violence (effet générationnel de la guerre, propagande accidentogène, virilisme politique), analyse les pratiques de clandestinité, d’infiltration et d’espionnage issues de la Résistance et réactivées par l’anticommunisme de guerre froide. Remobilisé lors des « complots » du printemps 1958 et de la campagne référendaire de l’automne, ce service d’ordre, dans lequel le nouveau chef de l’État recrute ses « gorilles », forme début 1959 le Service d’action civique qui recycle sous l’impulsion du tandem Foccart/Debizet, les hommes et méthodes du RPF. L’ouvrage insiste sur ce que révèle cet appareil de sécurité de la culture politique gaulliste : la place de l’informel et de l’officieux, le rôle de la violence et du secret. Il propose une histoire politique et culturelle de la violence militante en France des lendemains de la Seconde Guerre mondiale aux débuts de la Ve République (1947-1959) via une lecture « par le bas » centrée sur le terrain, et sur des acteurs et types d’engagement souvent négligés car jugés mineurs et prosaïques.

Sept ans plus tard, lorsque le comité d’action de gauche local conquiert la municipalité, c’est au nom de « Rendre le pouvoir aux citoyens » et d’« Information Participation Contrôle ». L’enquête menée par Hélène Hatzfeld dans les archives et auprès des acteurs de l’époque met à nu les continuités et les transformations d’un projet d’émancipation sociale, politique et humaine qui rebondit d’une décennie à l’autre, jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Une bascule s’opère : les horizons révolutionnaires font place à l’invention d’alternatives ; le mythe d’une municipalité autogestionnaire se construit et se diffuse. Par la diversité de ses emprunts, par l’exercice des pouvoirs et la subversion des institutions, l’histoire de Louviers est révélatrice d’une généalogie complexe de la démocratie participative. Débats, espoirs, désenchantements et conflits sont ici minutieusement décryptés, questionnés et toujours remis en contexte. Louviers est un terrain d’expérimentation de possibles qui, tout en appartenant à l’imaginaire d’une époque, trouvent un écho dans les mobilisations et les attentes de notre début de xxie siècle.

    Beschreibung: Based on the author’s Master’s dissertation, this study deals with Gallo-Roman building materials made from fired clay : particular attention is paid to the firing stage in the production of these materials. The author’s inventory of 142 identified tile factories in France has enabled her to provide new information on kiln technology, to establish a typology and to propose a possible chronological sequence. Although work of this kind has been carried out in Great Britain, a similar study had not been done for France. F. Le Ny’s timely remedy to this problem casts light upon an industry which has seldom been studied. The author is currently working on a doctoral thesis in archaeological science at the University of Rennes I.

    Beschreibung: Settled at the end of the XIIIth century on an unexploited land of the seignory of Mont-Saint-Jean, in Auxois, the “grange du Mont” was abandoned a hundred years later ; it did not resist to the demographic and economie recession at the end of the XIVth century, although it had been built to farm a large territory in a permanent way, as shown by the size and the quality of the structures. The archaeological excavation, the study of the archives and the ethnographic research, associated in an exemplary way, have led to the reconstitution of the structure and aims of such an agro-pastoral settiement in the Middle Age conception. This study brings new informations about a type of farming settiement poorly known until now, the “grange”, as well as about the artefacts and architecture of the rural settlements in mediaeval Burgundy.

    Beschreibung: A large campaign of excavations has saved the gaulish tumulus of Courtesoult (Haute-Saône) from destruction. These researches have put into evidence two main phases of construction and use of the monument which includes 45 tombs. These have been the subject of detailed anthropological and palaeodentographical studies. The typological analysis of the small finds, mainly composed of dress items (brooches, bracelets, belt hooks, coral beads), gives a date ranging from the Hallstatt D1 to the La Tène A period. The data From Courtesoult can be put up against that of other burial sites, such as Gy, Mantoche or Savoyeux. It gives further details concerning the evolution of funeral practices from the first Iron Age in the region between the Jura and Burgundy. This area had hitherto given rise to no recent research far this period.

    Beschreibung: The Orlac boat (Charente-Maritime), dated to the first-half of the XIth century and excavated in 1987 and 1988, comprises the major part of this publication. 15,50 metres in length and 2,10 in width, this vessel, with its own particular caracteristics, is representative of assembled monoxyle boat architecture. The study of this wreck was at the same time combined with a study of river and riverbank improvements at Orlac, and with other medieval wrecks (essentially dug outs) excavated elsewhere in the Charente. This archaeological approach to medieval water transport of the Charente has been continued by an analysis of written sources, the progression of river improvements (Middle-Ages to XIXth century), of navigation and their consequences on the regional economy.

L’analyse de la transaction peut-elle amener à réévaluer les pratiques des archivistes et des bibliothécaires ? Telles sont les questions auxquelles s’efforce de répondre cet ouvrage qui, ni manuel ni encyclopédie du don patrimonial, a l’ambition de replacer le geste du don de documents dans le contexte plus général du don comme créateur de lien social, de l’envisager dans sa dynamique de circulation dans la société et de s’interroger sur la nature symbolique de la relation qui se noue entre donateurs et donataires. Dépouillé de ses habits juridiques, le don d’archives ou de bibliothèques se révèle partiellement singulier. Le donateur s’y défait d’un bien en faveur d’un bénéficiaire collectif et anonyme, un bénéficiaire plus potentiel que réalisé ; l’établissement bénéficiaire – donataire apparent – est réellement le médiateur du don, lieu de conservation et de transmission de l’objet donné vers son destinataire réel, le public.

The research is based mainly on 22 assemblages of material dating from the 1st century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D., including glassware, iron and bronze objects, and above all an exceptional corpus of pottery. Using criteria such as frequency, use, variety of pottery production, datation, origins, etc., this chronology was found to be in continuity with previously studied Gaulish horizons. A series of illustrations places the material within the context of its discovery. The results of this study lead to an outline of the economic development of Rodumna - a small, rural town, built of clay and wood, very much in keeping with Gaulish tradition. This new volume in the dAf collection continues the study of the Gaulish occupations of Roanne begun in the recently published dAf 62. These two volumes, along with the publication on Feurs (dAf 14), constitute an exceptional documentation about the antique Segusiavi region.

    Beschreibung: Between 1987 and 1995, rescue excavations were carried out on three Late Bronze Age / Early Iron Age cremation burial cemeteries in the Castres area of the Tarn region (Gourjade and Le Martinet near Castres, Le Causse at Labruguière). These vast funerary complexes, containing more than 1,200 burials, were considered to form an indivisible whole and as such were listed as sites of national importance in 1995. Study of archaeological finds from the sites, comprised of almost 5,300 vessels and some 1,300 metal objects, has led to developing a simple common typology similar to those defined for cemeteries in the western lower Languedoc region. Typological characteristics are examined in detail and presented in conjunction with distribution maps. A detailed study of funerary architecture and deposit distribution, using the same approach as the spatial analysis, is presented in the following chapter. These observations provide the basis for suggestions concerning the chronological sequencing of the burials. The resulting seriation conclusively demonstrates the presence of five groups, thus shedding light on the evolution of material culture and funerary assemblages in the Castres cemeteries over more than three centuries (from the 9th to the first half of the 6th c BCE) and indicating that significant changes took place during the Bronze Age / Iron Age transition period. The study of topographical evolution points to logical patterns of development which were concentric at Causse and Goujade and linear at Martinet. Anthropological analysis, which is based on a remarkable sample comprised of more than 1,200 bone assemblages, unique in France for this period, has provided information on selection within the cemeteries and on changes in deposits and their constituents. A chapter is also given over to animal remains which are both numerous and varied, particularly at Causse. The study demonstrates changes in both the quantity and the qua lit y of meat offerings over time and provides a pertinent view of this practice. The paleosociological analysis which follows adopts a classical approach in which ail parameters are taken into consideration. The results indicate that deposits are relatively uniform and point to a degree of social levelling within the communities. The final chapter considers the cemeteries cultural identity and their regional connections. Study of available documentation over a wide area, extending from Provence to Aquitaine, demonstrates strong links with Mediterranean groups, primarily those from the western lower Languedoc area. The studies and syntheses are based upon abundant documentary evidence which is presented in its entirety in the second and third volumes.

Gaston Duplat – PG matricule 2677 détenu du 23 juin 1940 au 7 mai 1945 au camp de Coëtquidan (Morbihan), puis au Fronstalag 183 de Vannes, enfin au Stalag XVIII C de Markt Pongau (Autriche) – resta lui aussi pudique sur son histoire : un long silence jamais rompu. Un silence, mais deux carnets de captivité, plus de trois cents lettres, deux albums photographiques et un herbier annoté retrouvés dans les archives familiales après son décès et celui de son épouse. Ces documents furent le point de départ d’une longue enquête sur la vie de cette famille brutalement et durablement touchée par la guerre et la captivité du père. Essayer de reconstituer la vie de cette famille et de la comprendre au travers de ses mots et des archives, s’intéresser à l’histoire de la Captivité, des Stalags et des Kommandos mais aussi se pencher sur une histoire singulière, évoquer le destin du prisonnier matricule 2677 mais aussi celui de son épouse et de ses enfants, voilà l’objet de cet ouvrage.

Currently the study of such domestic structures is subject to detailed examination in France and has produced an abondance of material and elements to interpret concerning the typology, fonction, cultural data, evolution and typology of such structures. This research has lead to a typological approach of prehistoric domestic structures in Mediterranean Languedoc region and complements studies which have up to the moment concerned essentially the upper Paleolithic of northern France.

Comment la Ve République a-t-elle construit un cadre qui sert les intérêts des cultes tout en respectant l’interdiction de leur financement public posée en 1905 ? Le présent ouvrage montre que des responsables catholiques ont su trouver une oreille attentive auprès de décideurs politiques appartenant aux différentes familles de la droite. Dans les années 1960, leurs demandes visaient à abaisser le coût de construction des églises. Au cœur des années 1970, l’enjeu était l’intégration à moindres frais des prêtres, religieux et religieuses à la Sécurité sociale. Une décennie plus tard, il s’agissait de relancer le denier du culte en autorisant sa déductibilité fiscale. Chemin faisant, le rapprochement de l’État et des religions organisé par la loi Debré (1959) sur le terrain scolaire a été complété sur le plan cultuel par une série de dispositifs qui restent d’actualité.

The trenches and material of farmers of Neolithic and protohistoric times gave way to a silt quarry, then to the plots of land in a suburbium outside of Lutetia, still present in the 9th century. A 14th century manor house, decorated with mural paintings, preceded the city’s encroachment on this area, seen in the Charles V city wall and the neighbouring faubourg, while the tile Works continued to be active for three centuries. In the 16th century the site was drastically altered by the construction of the Tuileries castle and the Jardin Neuf. Interpretation of the numerous vestiges, supported by palaeoenvironmental studies and archival documents, provides new and sometimes unexpected data on land use before urbanisation, on the social status of the inhabitants, on the fate of renowned edifices. This book tells a story. "the story of a small piece of Paris", one of the great seats of the history of France. In the heart of Paris, the Grand Louvre project led to urban excavation on an exceptional scale. This archaeofogical operation was a model of its kind, both by the nature of its findings and its state-of-the-art exploration strategies.

Interrogeant les paradigmes de ces moments de basculement dans une autre temporalité, ils en définissent l’échelle la plus pertinente pour capter la perception des contemporains face à cette expérience traumatisante qui bouleverse les repères. Pour cela, ils analysent les traces scripturales, visuelles, matérielles produites par les contemporains, figures en vue comme anonymes. Mais cet ouvrage propose aussi une réflexion sur les processus de construction mémorielle de ces années terribles, en termes de filiations comme de décalages, avec l’objectif de leur instrumentalisation politique.

    Beschreibung: This work introduces the initial results of research at sites occupied by Native Americans in the Sinnamary basin (1660-220 BP), carried ont at the time of the construction of the Petit Saut dam by Electricité de France in French Guyana. A methodological approach pertaining to the tropical sylvan and riparian milieu is followed by a study of the open-air sites, and a commentary focusing on the phenomenon of terra preta and palaeolithic fires. For the first time a typological tramework and a vocabulary are proposed for reference to lithic senes and polishing-tool sites. This work also includes a study of ceramics using two complementary approaches: determination of place of manufacture based on the Chemical make-up of the pestes employed, and codification of the forms and motifs of the 22,000 objects registered. Following up on the publication devoted to the colonial period in this region (dAf 60), this volume makes a signifiant contribution to the renewal of histonographical work on the Guyana plateau.

    Beschreibung: This work, which summarises the author’s doctoral dissertation, presents an original approach to the study of lamps from the Early Roman Empire. Using a method more often applied to the study of samian pottery, the author has carried out a systematic analysis of the associations of signature, form and decoration. The purpose of the study was to verify a hypothesis, that characteristic types could be associated with a spécifie potter’s signature, and, at the same time, to identify actual workshops. The research is successful not only in demonstrating the existence of significant connections between several potters, but also in questioning the uncritical use, still frequently made, of chronoiogical typologies. The author argues for setting up reference corpora of makers stamps and decorative marks and for cataloguing characteristic forms, thus enabling the lamp to play a significant rôle in the archaeological evidence, as well as bringing to light a new craft.

This study, based on a regional inventory of the settlement sites of Limousin, is a contribution to filling that gap. The author considers archaeological, numismatic and historical data from Corrèze, Creuse and Haute-Vienne in relation to information from other regions of France, and proposes an analysis of Gaulish society and political structures in the immediately pre-Conquest period. The study is avowedly regionalist in perspective and offers a critique of earlier, brooder- scale models of change during this period.

    Beschreibung: L’archéologie préhistorique, inventée il y a à peine deux siècles, est une science récente ; c’est également une science en constante évolution dont les frontières restent indéterminées. Ce qu’elle est aujourd’hui devenue n’a plus guère à voir avec ce qu’elle a pu être : progressant vite, cette discipline rassemble autour d’elle des compétences exception­nellement nombreuses (géologiques, zoologiques, paléoanthropologiques, etc.). L’ambition de cet ouvrage est donc multiple. Interrogeant la provenance de cette discipline et l’évolution de ses rapports avec d’autres sciences, il propose tout d’abord une ­cartographie des avancées en cours. Et, pour cela, quelques-uns des meilleurs spécialistes de la discipline ont été sollicités. Mais il s’agit tout autant, d’une part, de porter un regard critique sur l’épistémologie qu’elle déploie et, d’autre part, de mener une réflexion sur les défis qu’il lui faut relever afin de se rendre pleinement visible. C’est pourquoi quatre axes de questionnement ont ici été privilégiés : le rapport au temps (et à l’histoire plus récente), l’évocation de récentes percées scientifiques, la confrontation aux autres sciences humaines, le partage du savoir au-delà des cercles ­savants. En cela cet ouvrage, à l’instar de ce qu’a finalement toujours été la préhistoire, se veut ­résolument interdisciplinaire. Aussi mobilise-t-il, en plus d’archéologues aux compétences multiples, des anthropologues, des historiens, des philosophes. Seule une telle interdisciplinarité peut nous permettre d’esquisser à petites touches les nouvelles frontières, dynamiques, mouvantes et toujours prometteuses, de la préhistoire.

    Beschreibung: Lorsque Attilio Teruzzi, officier militaire décoré, épousa une jeune juive américaine à l’orée d’une brillante carrière de chanteuse d’opéra, sa bonne fortune semblait acquise. Le mariage fut couronné par la bénédiction de Mussolini en personne. Pourtant, trois ans plus tard, ce converti de la première heure à la cause fasciste, devenu commandant des Chemises noires, répudia sa femme, l’accusant d’avoir compromis son honneur masculin. C’est avec une autre jeune femme juive et étrangère que Teruzzi se dota d’un semblant de vie familiale, complétée par la naissance d’une enfant. Alors que les nazis s’impatientaient, il se trouvait nanti de deux épouses juives, l’une qu’il ne pouvait épouser légalement, l’autre dont il ne pouvait divorcer. À travers le récit intime d’une cour tapageuse et d’un mariage désastreux – brillamment reconstitué grâce à des lettres de famille et des archives judiciaires –, Le parfait fasciste nous invite au grand spectacle de l’ascension et de la chute de Mussolini. Teruzzi y apparaît comme un spécimen exemplaire de l’homme nouveau fasciste : conformiste, intéressé, sans scrupule, violent et opportuniste, en plus d’être un jouisseur effréné. Dans cette étude historique majeure, Victoria de Grazia nous rappelle que le privé est toujours politique dans la quête fasciste de la virilité et du pouvoir. Un portrait érudit et captivant des deux décennies du régime fasciste porté par deux récits – l’un politique et public, l’autre personnel et privé – savamment entrelacés.

    Beschreibung: Les historiens s’intéressant rarement au cadre urbain des séjours de la cour, ce livre vise à réconcilier l’histoire de la cour avec l’histoire urbaine en général, et avec Paris en particulier. Il s’agit alors moins de saisir la ville dans sa dimension de capitale, que dans sa fonction de « ville de résidence », pour isoler le facteur curial de l’équation urbaine. Parce qu’il y a une vraie difficulté à penser le rapport entre Paris et la cour – au Moyen Âge parce qu’elle est itinérante, à l’époque moderne à cause de Versailles – le livre explore les liens entre la ville et la cour sur le temps long, du xiiie au xviiie siècle, par petites touches, en six parties rassemblant des contributions d’historiens, d’historiens de l’art et de littéraires, dans un esprit comparatiste (époque médiévale/époque moderne, Paris/Londres-Madrid-Lisbonne). Il s’agit d’un véritable livre collectif qui explore le problème de la présence physique du roi et de ses gens dans la ville, mais aussi celui des effets socioéconomiques et politiques de la consommation curiale, des représentations que les citadins et curiaux se font les uns des autres, et enfin celle de l’investissement symbolique des gens de cour dans Paris.

    Beschreibung: Two exceptionally well preserved sites were discovered in 2000 on the backshore of Baie Orientale on the island of Saint Martin, Lesser Antilles: Mesoindian camps (800 BC — 100 AD), where subsistence activities were associated with stone, shell and coral tool manufacturing, which was previously unknown for the Preceramic period, and a Early Neoindian site (740-960 AD) interpreted as a specialized satellite camp of the village of Pointe du Canonnier, thus corresponding to a territorial settlement pattern that is characteristic of this period. The innovative and original study proposed by Dominique Bonnissent sheds light on the complex lifestyle of the nomadic Preceramic populations that moved about the Caribbean Ocean. This work henceforth provides an indispensible resource for Caribbean Pre-Columbian archaeology. At the beginning of each chapter, a substantial summary with bibliographic references and figure citations allow English and Spanish speaking readers to consult the essential data and arguments.

    Beschreibung: Cet ouvrage se propose d’analyser l’impact du Front populaire sur le Finistère, département rural fortement marqué par la question religieuse. Évitant une approche surplombante, le cadre choisi permet d’appréhender au plus près les fractures de la société finistérienne, entre villes et campagnes, entre blancs et bleus, entre dominants et dominés. La pénétration des idées sociales est faible dans les campagnes. Un puissant syndicalisme agricole s’y développe en s’arrogeant le rôle d’un contre-État. En face, la société urbaine vit ses propres antagonismes. L’Église catholique, présente dans les deux mondes, tente de conforter son emprise sur l’ensemble de la société et se retrouve de fait en concurrence avec les élites agrariennes. L’arrivée des gauches au pouvoir radicalise les positions. L’irruption d’une séquence gréviste inédite oblige les uns et les autres à s’adapter. Les forces adverses mettent en place des stratégies mimétiques qui cherchent à accompagner plutôt qu’à affronter le réveil ouvrier. Les changements d’échelle permettent d’étudier tous les moyens utilisés, du consentement jusqu’à la coercition. Loin d’une histoire fractale, nous avons privilégié une histoire mosaïque. Pour autant, le Finistère du Front populaire, avec ses particularités, s’inscrit dans le cadre national. Cet ouvrage est une contribution à l’histoire de cet événement majeur dans un département catholique et rural.

    Beschreibung: This work is the result of rescue archaeology carried out at Feurs (Loire) from 1978 to 1981. A series of excava­tions on the site of the Roman town revealed an earlier Gaulish settlement at its height during the late La Tène period. The discovery of evidence of pre-Roman occupation was completely unexpected since the cantonal capital of the Segusiavi, Forum Segusiavorum, was founded by Augustus and its origins were assumed to date from this period. Based upon the systematic analysis of a large number of finds series, the author’s study outlines how the different aspects of the Gaulish settlement of the site developed during the century preceding Caesar’s conquest. Seen within the context of inner Gaul, Feurs is of funda­mental importance to our understanding of Gaulish civilisation at the end of the Iron Age.

    Beschreibung: This work, with a preface by the Minister of Cultural Affairs, is the first volume in a series devoted to the research currently being carried out on Mont-Beuvray, a site of major historical importance which was declared a "national heritage" by the President of France in 1985. Fanette Laubenheimer, a Research Director with the French government research council the CNRS, here makes a detailed study of the extraordinary mass of amphorae discovered at the turn of the century by two pioneers of archaeological investigation within France itself. The author first analyses how the collections were made up, the method used by the two archaeologists in dealing with a vast and difficult mass of material about which virtually nothing was known at the time. Until now only brief and summary publications of this material have been available: nonetheless, they have been widely used. They are now superseded by a rigorously organized and welldocumented catalogue presenting the whole of the collections for the first time, and giving an entirely new interpretation of the data. These 195 stamped amphorae, mostly italic, are exceptional in Gaul for their quantity, which demonstrates the extent of imports of Etruscan and Campanian wine into one of the largest oppida of independent Gaul during the 1st century BC, and the subsequent emergence of a new current of wine, oil and fisch sauce imports from the Iberian Peninsula. This work of reference, the first important publication since the recent reopening of excavations in the Aedui capital, bridges the gap between the diggers of the last century and the archaeologists of today.
