    Description: La littérature antique classique dans les bibliothèques : tel est l’intérêt partagé qui réunit dans cet ouvrage littéraires, historiens du livre et chercheurs d’horizons divers pour confronter leurs regards et leurs méthodes. Avec l’Antiquité classique, c’est une tradition qui est donnée à examiner une tradition fondatrice des études littéraires, mais surtout d’un système d’éducation et de pensée, qui à certains moments se confond avec la culture elle-même : l’intense renouvellement qu’elle permet, et son lent et progressif affaiblissement à la fin de l’Âge classique méritaient d’être pris dans le temps long, du xve au xixe siècle. À partir des bibliothèques et de leur histoire se dessine une histoire du « goût antique », celui des estampes comme celui d’une littérature dont les auteurs canoniques évoluent au fil du temps. On y entend les échos d’une histoire intellectuelle, celle des méthodes de classement et de stratification des savoirs, celle qui définit la place de l’Antiquité – et de la littérature – dans l’enseignement. On y lit également une histoire du dialogue qui s’est noué de tout temps, et plus particulièrement à la Renaissance, entre les anciens et les modernes. Histoire culturelle encore, qui renvoie à la formation de l’honnête homme comme à celle de l’homme de l’art, et illustre la force des canons bibliophiliques ou des modes et impératifs sociaux au moins autant que les goûts individuels.

    Description: Besides identifying plants used by men, charcoal analysis may also reconstruct the history of forests, based on the study of charcoal from domestic uses. The reliability of this discipline depends on the definition of rigourous methods, from the archaeological dig to the palaeoenvironmental interpretation, which is the subject of the tint part of this work.In part two, thirteen languedocian sites dating from the end of Prehistory to Antiquity are studied following this method. In the Languedoc region, the early balance between the mediterranean oak forest and human activities leads us to review the history of deforestation. It is only in the lion Age that permanent tree clearance on plains increases, maintained during the roman period, announcing perhaps the first permanent fields. The results of this study, combined with documentary sources, constitute a first synthesis on territory changes.

    Description: La Fontaine affiche nettement sa filiation à l’égard de Marot. Du moins à l’égard d’un Marot. Comme beaucoup d’auteurs de son époque, il voit en effet dans le poète de L’Adolescence clémentine l’efflorescence printanière d’un style proprement français, qui allie au piquant et au brio la naïveté toute vernale d’une écriture. L’auteur des Fables et des Contes admire ainsi le brillant faiseur d’épigrammes. Il y reconnaît « le génie fran­çais », son ingenium, son naturel. Ce naturel s’exprime à la fois dans un esprit gaulois – que Rabelais radicalise trop pour qu’on puisse en faire un allié de marque – et une écriture transparente, non savante, à l’opposé de l’artificieuse et docte poésie de la Pléiade rejetée par le XVIIe siècle comme un accident regrettable dans l’histoire des formes. Cet « élégant badinage », assigné depuis Boileau à Marot, a pu nuire à l’œuvre de ce dernier en en restreignant la portée. La critique moderne a, par contraste, reconnu dans le poète de Cahors un esprit secret, anxieux, au cœur des débats évangéliques du premier XVIe siècle. Le vrai Marot est sûrement à rechercher au carrefour de ces deux interprétations extrêmes ; comme La Fontaine, au demeurant, que l’on ne peut réduire au modèle achevé de l’esthétique galante. La relation qui unit Marot et La Fontaine est bien en tout cas au départ une relation d’ordre formel. Aussi les chercheurs réunis ici ont tous tenté de repenser ou de repréciser les lectures stylistiques de l’un ou l’autre de ces auteurs à travers leur interprétation de L’Adolescence clémentine ou des Amours de Psyché et de Cupidon. La diversité des points de vue adoptés permet d’aider à définir ce qui reste en dernier lieu le plus difficile à caractériser, ce naturel du style, si revêche à l’analyse littéraire.

    Description: Apprendre avec des images et du son : depuis longtemps déjà le cinéma, puis la vidéo et le multimédia, ont investi l’enseignement. Le développement de ces pratiques suit un parcours complexe qu’infléchissent de nombreux facteurs : innovations techniques, histoire du cinéma, évolution des savoirs et de leur didactique, décisions politiques et passions individuelles... Dans ce domaine, le travail des pionniers est parfois méconnu, sinon oublié, et l’accumulation des savoirs et des expériences se fait difficilement. L’histoire des fonds d’archives de films pédagogiques et scientifiques, qui datent quasiment des débuts du cinéma, l’histoire des personnes et des institutions, à l’origine de ces productions d’images et de sons, restent à écrire. Parallèlement, on constate un intérêt grandissant pour les images et les films d’archives. Des cinémathèques spécialisées s’organisent et se développent, leurs fonds intéressent les producteurs et les diffuseurs de films ainsi que les chercheurs. Réfléchir sur ce que nous apprennent les documents anciens, prendre en compte la richesse des fonds d’archives filmées, dans les domaines scientifique et pédagogique, s’interroger sur les usages actuels et futurs, les raisons des oublis et les enjeux de la mémoire, tel est l’enjeu de ce recueil.

    Description: Organized through the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the symposium “Lascaux and Preservation Issues in Subterranean Environments” was held in Paris on February 26 and 27, 2009 under the chairmanship of Jean Clottes. It brought together nearly three hundred participants from seventeen countries with the goal of confronting research and interventions conducted in Lascaux Cave since 2001 with the experiences gained in other countries in the domain of preservation in subterranean environments. Twelve presentations addressed questions related to disciplines such as hydrogeology, climatology and microbiology in relation to the protection and valorization of decorated caves. The talks were followed by debates allowing the experts and all other participants to freely express themselves. This volume, which constitutes the proceedings of this symposium, is composed of the studies presented during the sessions and full transcriptions of the debates. It provides both a synthesis of the conservation activities realized at Lascaux between 2001 and 2009 and the state of research and the conditions of the cave as of 2009.

    Description: Reviewing the research in recent decades on the links between religions and social classes amounts in part to documenting an absence. However, this eclipse is relatively recent because this topic has long been a classic in the social sciences. Has the articulation between religious and class affiliations become so discreet or, on the contrary, so obvious that it now flies under our radars? The eleven qualitative surveys gathered in this volume reopen this field of investigation. They question our ways of seeing (or not seeing) these links and invite us to further the analysis beyond apparent elective affinities, by looking at the overlaps, the misalignments and the tensions between religions and social classes.     Description: Des travaux récents nous ont fait redécouvrir l’œuvre de science sociale de Frédéric Le Play (1806-1882), mais on ignorait qu’il avait aussi étudié – et avec quelle maestria ! – les forêts. Des Forêts, resté un manuscrit inédit jusqu’à ce jour, nous révèle ce versant de sa multiple activité scientifique. Il s’agit d’un tableau des forêts du globe, dressé vers 1847, où la question forestière est examinée dans toute sa complexité : géographique, botanique, sylvicole, économique, sociale et juridique. On y voit se dessiner une science forestière concrète qui, à la fois, annonce la science sociale des Ouvriers européens (1855) et préfigure la pensée écologique contemporaine. Une présentation par Antoine Savoye et Bernard Kalaora analyse l’ouvrage et le situe dans l’œuvre de Le Play.

    Description: This work presents the findings of research conducted from 1988 to 1993 near the étang de Berre. On the basis of systematic surveying, soundings and the excavation of a Gallo - Roman establishment,F Trément situates the major sites of Saint-Blaise and the Fossæ Marianæ in a globally and dynamically perceived space. Using earth and life sciences (geomorphology, sedimentology, palynology…). and with recourse to texts and iconography, the archaeologist broadens his focus, to encompass the landscape in its entirety. This microregion is characterised by numerous closed depressions, which explain the high population density during the Neolithic, the Iron Age and in Antiquity, and constitute sedimentary records of the evolution of the surroundings. The author seeks to understand how the successive waterside communities adapted to this shifting and harsh environment, how they appropriated the space and set about exploiting it, more or less consciously, leaving their mark, more or less enduring.

    Description: How and when did the world enter the system we call “capitalism”? This is the question at the heart of the Brenner Debate, named after the American historian Robert Brenner. Robert Brenner’s works have exerted a profound influence on the development of Marxist thought since the 1970’s, elevating this debate among historians of capitalism to great significance. In the first part, François Allisson and Nicolas Brisset trace and contextualize the key stages of the debate, which led to Robert Brenner’s seminal work. The authors demonstrate that one’s approach to the history of capitalism is closely linked to one’s view of the economic system. The second part contains a previously unpublished translation of Robert Brenner’s 2007 article, « Propriété et progrès : quand Adam Smith faisait fausse route », which is according to its author the definitive version of his 1976 argument. This book is an introduction to the thought of an economist who is relatively unknown in the French-speaking world but who deserves our attention in view of his significant contributions to Anglo-Saxon historiography.

    Description: The results of the excavation, undertaken in Nîmes from 1966 to 1992, of the sites of the Marseillaise, the Villégiales des Bénédictins, the Hesperides and the Fontaine des Bénédictins, make it possible to follow the evolution of the Bénédictins district from the neolithic to the present day. Near a pre-roman oppidum, on the slopes of mount Cavalier, this area was occupied from the end of the sixth century BC, later finding itself at the heart of the old town after construction of the atywall during Augustus reign. No longer an urban area from the second century AD onwards, it remained rural until the eighteenth century.Organised according to a framework which respected the relief, with both water supply system and drainage, this district contained a group of houses whose plans, construction details, decoration and domestic finds are studied both individually and from a socio-economic point of view.

    Description: Three Upper Palaeolithic sites have been discovered during the construction of the A5 motorway between Melun and Troyes.Marolles-sur-Seine, in the Seine-et-Mame area, is related to the other Magdaleman sites discovered in the Paris basin. The excellent preservation of the finds (silex, animal bones, heated stones) has made possible a palaeoethnological study of this horse hunting site, a type of research rarely possible in a rescue excavation Technological analysis of the lithic from Lailly (Aungnacian), in the Yonne area, and Fontvannes (Perigordian ?), in the Aube area, has revealed the production techniques for three kinds of artefacts blades, flakes and bladelets. These two sites increase the importance of the Vanne valley in the understanding of occupation of the south east of the Paris basin.Following the publication about the Middle Palaeolithic sites of the Sens area (dAf number 47), this volume renews the study of early Prehistory in this region

    Description: The history of Montbeliard began in the late 9th century with the construction of a castle on a rocky spur overlooking the Allan and the Lizaine rivers. The city developed as a result of contact with both Burgundian and Germanic culture and by the end of the 14th century had become a commercial and religious centre. The second defensive wall, built in the 15th century is a reflection of the city’s prosperity, encircling as it does the original castle, through as well as the two districts of La Halle and Saint-Martin. Excavation work undertaken in 1993-1994 prior to the construction of a shopping centre in the Velotte quarter of the Saint-Martin district has enabled archeologists to define seven build periods of architectural development covering both buildings and the urban defense system. This work has also shed light on various aspects of daily and social life as experienced by the inhabitants of this area within the city walls the bucolic character of which remained intact up to the final quarter of the 19th century.

    Description: Dans l’Espagne de la période du franquisme tardif (1957-1975), les critiques d’art jouent un rôle essentiel dans les mouvements de contestation qui agitent une société alors en pleine mutation. Contre la doctrine d’un art moderne autonome et dépolitisé prônée par le régime, ils produisent des discours esthétiques qui rétablissent le lien entre culture et politique et poussent les artistes à inscrire leurs œuvres dans le cadre élargi des questions éthiques et des enjeux sociaux. En s’appuyant sur l’étude d’archives restées jusqu’ici inexplorées et sur des entretiens inédits, Compagnons de lutte s’attache au travail de sept critiques et historiens de l’art espagnols qui ont pris une part extraordinairement active à la vie intellectuelle et politique de leur pays dans les années 1960 : ils publient, éditent, traduisent, ils organisent des expositions, des débats, des rencontres. Grâce à la complicité nouée avec Giulio Carlo Argan et Umberto Eco en Italie, Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez au Mexique, Gérald Gassiot-Talabot, Pierre Restany et le Salon de la Jeune Peinture à Paris, ils s’approprient les théories et les tendances artistiques circulant à ce moment-là en Europe et sur le continent américain, en les adaptant avec succès aux conditions spécifiques de l’Espagne franquiste. Fruit d’une approche interdisciplinaire et transnationale des réseaux artistiques du Sud global, l’ouvrage de Paula Barreiro López révèle un pan longtemps négligé par l’historiographie de l’art européen, en éclairant le fonctionnement de l’avant-garde espagnole dans les dernières années de la dictature, sa diffusion et sa réception critique dans les milieux culturels de gauche à l’époque de la guerre froide.

    Description: Pour Hans Kelsen, la question des conditions de validité d’une norme juridique d’une part, celle des valeurs qui sont censées inspirer et contrôler le droit positif d’autre part, sont deux questions bien distinctes. C’est la première de ces deux questions, objet de ce qu’il nomme la « théorie pure du droit », qui est au cœur de ces études centrées sur le statut des fictions juridiques - et d’abord sur la nature des fictions en général. Cette réflexion se développe ici à travers un débat vivant avec le théoricien des fictions Hans Vaihinger, auteur de la fameuse Philosophie du comme si (1911). Deux questions sont particulièrement stimulantes pour tous ceux qui s’intéressent, de près ou de loin, au droit et à la philosophie du droit : 1) Comment le droit positif comme système de normes existantes peut-il trouver sa justification ultime dans une norme fondamentale fictionnelle, dans une « fiction au sens vaihingerien du terme » ? Autrement dit, comment ce qui est positif, factuel, par exemple telle loi ou telle décision de justice, peut-il trouver son fondement ultime dans quelque chose d’imaginaire, qui ne dénote rien dans la réalité ? 2) Quelle est aujourd’hui la pertinence du modèle kelsénien de validation des normes ?     Description: La poésie de Langston Hughes (1902-1967), poète majeur du xxe siècle américain, s’est développée dès les années 1920 en parallèle avec les musiques populaires que sont le blues et le jazz et parfois même avec les spirituals. Elle se pose à la fois comme un hommage à la culture noire et comme un geste esthétique original. Du début de sa carrière jusqu’aux années 1960, Hughes va chercher à déplacer vers le domaine poétique les caractéristiques rythmiques et thématiques des musiques qu’il aime et qui animent la vie des Noirs américains. Que ce soit dans The Weary Blues (1926) et Fine Clothes to the Jew (1927) ou beaucoup plus tard dans Montage of a Dream Deferred (1951) et Ask Your Mama (1961), Hughes fait le pari de la poésie jazz et de la poésie blues en s’attachant avant tout à la musicalité du poème, indépendamment d’une mise en musique qu’il juge secondaire. Cet ouvrage, qui constitue la première monographie consacrée à Langston Hughes depuis 1964, montre l’évolution de la pensée et de la poésie de l’écrivain et propose la lecture de ses poèmes « musicaux » les plus essentiels. Ce parcours permet de mesurer l’inventivité de sa démarche poétique et sa fécondité puisque des auteurs tels que Gwendolyn Brooks, Jack Kerouac ou encore Margaret Walker se sont largement inspirés de ce que Hughes lui-même appelait ses « poèmes jazz » et ses « poèmes blues ».

Lyon, federal capital of the Cauls and later capital of the Burgundian kings. was from the IVth to VIIIth centuries an ecclesiastical centre of prime importance. The remains oftwo churches and of a baptistery forming an épiscopal group (one of the first to be completely excavated). the basilicas built on the tombs of saints and the graveyards, are evidence of the creation of a new Christian architecture, respecting antique traditions, and of the Christianisation of funerary practices. Thorough analysis of the archaeological evidence, confronted with archivai sources and documents, confirms the vitality and prestige of Lugdunum christianum.

    Description: Gilbert Simondon’s and Jacques Derrida’s works have never been studied jointly, even though the two authors shared a historical context, a theoretical background and a set of common problems typical of the 1960’s. This book suggests to go beyond this lack through a confrontation of their thoughts around three major questions: the question of metaphysics and the relationship between philosophy and science; the question of humanity and the relationship between life and consciousness; the question of technology and the relationship between memory and archives. This articulation of Simondon’s and Derrida’s reflections shows that it is possible to overcome traditional oppositions between animality and humanity, nature and culture or nature and technique. This philosophical gesture enables us to think the relationship between life, technique and spirit outside of dualist metaphysics, as well as to understand the anthropological issues of contemporary technological transformations. Such an understanding has become necessary in order to face the challenges of Anthropocene and transhumanism.

    Description: From 1995 to 1997, four early medieval sites were excavated in the Fougères region as part of archaeological research work carried out prior to the construction of the A84 motarway. As the sites all date from the same period, a comprehensive research plan was implemented from the outset, with special emphasis on paleo-environmental analysis and examination of pottery finds. Examination of the three Carolingian settlement sites, as well as a ford from the same period, reveals an organised, interactive approach to environmental management of the surrounding lands (land division, ditch Systems. tracks, development of a peatcovered valley floor), which were developed and systematically exploited from the 7th to 10th century. The present volume provides a significant contribution to our understanding of early medieval rural settlements in Brittany, an area of study which has hitherto received little attention from archaeologists The research is enhanced by an analysis of bio-archaeological data from the sites, showing the impact of agro-pastoral activities on the landscape and vegetation in nearby areas.

    Description: La République des castors : c’est ainsi que Montesquieu, d’après un témoignage de Pierre Daru, appelait Venise. Qu’entendait-il, au juste, par là ? La ténacité, certes, avec laquelle les habitants de la lagune avaient fait surgir de l’eau la « ville la plus triomphante » du monde, mais sa précarité aussi, qui pouvait à chaque instant la mettre en butte aux convoitises des hommes et à l’usure du temps. Ainsi, en un jour, le 12 mai 1797, la vague napoléonienne devait emporter la vieille République qui avait résisté pendant un millénaire à toutes les menaces, à tous les dangers. C’est autour de cet événement – situé comme « épisode » dans ses tenants et aboutissants immédiats, mais aussi dans une ligne de « tendance » séculaire –, et pour en commémorer l’anniversaire, que ce recueil est organisé. Il ne s’agit pas d’un livre, qui viendrait s’ajouter à l’immense bibliographie sur l’histoire de Venise, mais plutôt d’un guide pour ce qui, dans cette histoire, a fait et fait encore problème : le « mythe politique », le statut des « citoyens », les querelles théâtrales, les circonstances de la chute, les débats et controverses dont la République fut l’objet après 1797, et tout au long du XIXe siècle. Si deux légendes ont fleuri autour de Venise et de son histoire, une légende dorée et une légende noire, ce recueil, en déroulant un fil continu entre les deux, tente de montrer comment l’une ne fut que le reflet inversé de l’autre. C’est ce qui fait, au fond, la singularité de Venise dans l’histoire européenne.

A corpus of sixty objects made of bone and antler, found at eight middle and upper Magdalenian sites m the area bounded by the Pyrénées, the Gironde estuary and the Dordogne river, is methodically analysed.On the basis of this analysis, backed by a previously unpublished and quite exceptional iconography, the author proposes fresh thinking on the artistic gestures of the Magdalenian period, on the operational processes corresponding to mental patterns and collective practices, on the modalities of acquisition and transmission of know-how and skills, and ultimately, on the existence of a thought-out artistic phenomenon in the societies of this epoch.

    Description: Vestiges of Gallo-Roman workshops that were in activity between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD in the city of Augustodunum were found in the course of work carried out at the Lycée militaire in Autun. The workshop buildings are described in detail and situated in their urban setting. The different crafts activities are studied closely: metalworking with copper and iron alloys, ceramics, crafts of bone. This work has enhanced our knowledge of the chain of production in metallurgical crafts in particular. Fresh data on the manufacture of common objects such as brass fibulae and bells of bronze coated iron sheet is obtained from the analysis of mould fragments, of furnace remains and of forge slag and waste. Crafts emerge as a major feature of the economy in the city of the Aedui, according to processes already identified at Bibracte. The rich documentation of this work constitutes a significant contribution to research on crafts in ancient times.

Ten years of excavation and multidisciplinary studies have made it possible to analyse the traces of occupation left in the cave’s fill, and to investigate the parietal motifs which, in addition to naturalistic animal depictions, include a dozen "monsters" and some human figures, which pose the question of a mythology concerning the origins of the world.

    Description: This study gives an account of the results of the archaeological excavations of the Gallo-Roman village at Roanne (Rodumna). The research is based mainly on 22 assemblages of material dating from the 1st century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D., including glassware, iron and bronze objects, and above all an exceptional corpus of pottery. Detailed analysis of the pottery and its relationship with the rest of the material enabled a chronology to be established. Using criteria such as frequency, use, variety of pottery production, datation, origins, etc., this chronology was found to be in continuity with previously studied Gaulish horizons. A series of illustrations places the material within the context of its discovery. The results of this study lead to an outline of the economic development of Rodumna - a small, rural town, built of clay and wood, very much in keeping with Gaulish tradition. This new volume in the dAf collection continues the study of the Gaulish occupations of Roanne begun in the recently published dAf 62. These two volumes, along with the publication on Feurs (dAf 14), constitute an exceptional documentation about the antique Segusiavi region.

    Description: Between 1987 and 1995, rescue excavations were carried out on three Late Bronze Age / Early Iron Age cremation burial cemeteries in the Castres area of the Tarn region (Gourjade and Le Martinet near Castres, Le Causse at Labruguière). These vast funerary complexes, containing more than 1,200 burials, were considered to form an indivisible whole and as such were listed as sites of national importance in 1995. Study of archaeological finds from the sites, comprised of almost 5,300 vessels and some 1,300 metal objects, has led to developing a simple common typology similar to those defined for cemeteries in the western lower Languedoc region. Typological characteristics are examined in detail and presented in conjunction with distribution maps. A detailed study of funerary architecture and deposit distribution, using the same approach as the spatial analysis, is presented in the following chapter. These observations provide the basis for suggestions concerning the chronological sequencing of the burials. The resulting seriation conclusively demonstrates the presence of five groups, thus shedding light on the evolution of material culture and funerary assemblages in the Castres cemeteries over more than three centuries (from the 9th to the first half of the 6th c BCE) and indicating that significant changes took place during the Bronze Age / Iron Age transition period. The study of topographical evolution points to logical patterns of development which were concentric at Causse and Goujade and linear at Martinet. Anthropological analysis, which is based on a remarkable sample comprised of more than 1,200 bone assemblages, unique in France for this period, has provided information on selection within the cemeteries and on changes in deposits and their constituents. A chapter is also given over to animal remains which are both numerous and varied, particularly at Causse. The study demonstrates changes in both the quantity and the qua lit y of meat offerings over time and provides a pertinent view of this practice. The paleosociological analysis which follows adopts a classical approach in which ail parameters are taken into consideration. The results indicate that deposits are relatively uniform and point to a degree of social levelling within the communities. The final chapter considers the cemeteries cultural identity and their regional connections. Study of available documentation over a wide area, extending from Provence to Aquitaine, demonstrates strong links with Mediterranean groups, primarily those from the western lower Languedoc area. The studies and syntheses are based upon abundant documentary evidence which is presented in its entirety in the second and third volumes.

The trenches and material of farmers of Neolithic and protohistoric times gave way to a silt quarry, then to the plots of land in a suburbium outside of Lutetia, still present in the 9th century. A 14th century manor house, decorated with mural paintings, preceded the city’s encroachment on this area, seen in the Charles V city wall and the neighbouring faubourg, while the tile Works continued to be active for three centuries. In the 16th century the site was drastically altered by the construction of the Tuileries castle and the Jardin Neuf. Interpretation of the numerous vestiges, supported by palaeoenvironmental studies and archival documents, provides new and sometimes unexpected data on land use before urbanisation, on the social status of the inhabitants, on the fate of renowned edifices. This book tells a story. "the story of a small piece of Paris", one of the great seats of the history of France. In the heart of Paris, the Grand Louvre project led to urban excavation on an exceptional scale. This archaeofogical operation was a model of its kind, both by the nature of its findings and its state-of-the-art exploration strategies.

C’est à la formation de ce concept que ce livre est consacré. À la Renaissance apparaît le concept géographique d’une « Terre universelle » (Gregor Reisch), c’est-à-dire d’un orbis terrarum qui n’est plus limité, comme on l’affirmait auparavant, à la zone tempérée de l’hémisphère Nord, mais se confond virtuellement avec la totalité du globe terrestre. Cette Terre partout habitable, sol désormais universel de l’existence humaine, constitue alors l’objet propre de la géographie. Quelles ont été les conditions de l’apparition du nouveau concept géographique de la Terre ? En fonction de quelles initiatives intellectuelles et graphiques a-t-il été forgé ? Quel a été l’impact spirituel et moral de cette nouvelle condition de l’existence humaine ?     Description: This work introduces the initial results of research at sites occupied by Native Americans in the Sinnamary basin (1660-220 BP), carried ont at the time of the construction of the Petit Saut dam by Electricité de France in French Guyana. A methodological approach pertaining to the tropical sylvan and riparian milieu is followed by a study of the open-air sites, and a commentary focusing on the phenomenon of terra preta and palaeolithic fires. For the first time a typological tramework and a vocabulary are proposed for reference to lithic senes and polishing-tool sites. This work also includes a study of ceramics using two complementary approaches: determination of place of manufacture based on the Chemical make-up of the pestes employed, and codification of the forms and motifs of the 22,000 objects registered. Following up on the publication devoted to the colonial period in this region (dAf 60), this volume makes a signifiant contribution to the renewal of histonographical work on the Guyana plateau.

By adapting to this environment, a typical Pyrenean form Capra pyrenaica pyrenaica appeared several millennia ago. Consumed during Prehistory, the Ibex became, during the Upper Paleolithic, an unavoidable figure of the prehistoric bestiary. Many of its representations are world-famous: painted Ibex from the Salon Noir (Niaux cave, Ariège) or sculpted on sperm whale teeth (Mas d’Azil cave, Ariège). This second volume of the book “Ibex and Pyrenees” is devoted to these prehistoric figurations and offers a detailed inventory for the French and Spanish Pyrenees that is completely new and richly illustrated. It also presents Palaeolithic sites outside the Pyrenees in which the ibex is well represented. Beyond its iconographic interest, accessible to all audiences, this inventory is intended to become a working tool for researchers and teachers; it has therefore been structured with this objective in mind and is coupled with an evolving online database.     Description: L’archéologie préhistorique, inventée il y a à peine deux siècles, est une science récente ; c’est également une science en constante évolution dont les frontières restent indéterminées. Ce qu’elle est aujourd’hui devenue n’a plus guère à voir avec ce qu’elle a pu être : progressant vite, cette discipline rassemble autour d’elle des compétences exception­nellement nombreuses (géologiques, zoologiques, paléoanthropologiques, etc.). L’ambition de cet ouvrage est donc multiple. Interrogeant la provenance de cette discipline et l’évolution de ses rapports avec d’autres sciences, il propose tout d’abord une ­cartographie des avancées en cours. Et, pour cela, quelques-uns des meilleurs spécialistes de la discipline ont été sollicités. Mais il s’agit tout autant, d’une part, de porter un regard critique sur l’épistémologie qu’elle déploie et, d’autre part, de mener une réflexion sur les défis qu’il lui faut relever afin de se rendre pleinement visible. C’est pourquoi quatre axes de questionnement ont ici été privilégiés : le rapport au temps (et à l’histoire plus récente), l’évocation de récentes percées scientifiques, la confrontation aux autres sciences humaines, le partage du savoir au-delà des cercles ­savants. En cela cet ouvrage, à l’instar de ce qu’a finalement toujours été la préhistoire, se veut ­résolument interdisciplinaire. Aussi mobilise-t-il, en plus d’archéologues aux compétences multiples, des anthropologues, des historiens, des philosophes. Seule une telle interdisciplinarité peut nous permettre d’esquisser à petites touches les nouvelles frontières, dynamiques, mouvantes et toujours prometteuses, de la préhistoire.

The work brings together data from excavations carried out since the nineteenth century, presenting a corpus of 240 funerary deposits whose surviving anthropological, faunal and archaeological finds have been completely re-examined. Particular attention is given to the human remains. Seen in relation to hypotheses suggested by historical and ethnological comparisons, this study of funerary practices in the pre-literate world provides insights into organisational structures and social hierarchies, shedding new light on collective notions of death and the after-life.

Teruzzi y apparaît comme un spécimen exemplaire de l’homme nouveau fasciste : conformiste, intéressé, sans scrupule, violent et opportuniste, en plus d’être un jouisseur effréné. Dans cette étude historique majeure, Victoria de Grazia nous rappelle que le privé est toujours politique dans la quête fasciste de la virilité et du pouvoir. Un portrait érudit et captivant des deux décennies du régime fasciste porté par deux récits – l’un politique et public, l’autre personnel et privé – savamment entrelacés.

In Great-Britain some thinkers and scientists warned against “racial decline”, morbid heredity and social pathology. By exploring this context, also marked by the revival of Gothic fiction, this book brings into view a few lesser-known works novels and throws light on popular works of fiction, such as Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Island of Doctor Moreau, Dracula and the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Degenerating creatures go back through their personal, family and biological history. Their bodies are uncanny yet recognizable, monstrous yet readable. Some novelists spoke in favour of regeneration, others blurred the boundaries between morbidity and powerfulness, the patient and the doctor, the degenerate and the social reformer, the moral madman and the moral maniac. In creating characters that were so unfit that they must finally die, late-Victorian writers turned degeneration into a creative act.

Les promesses décryptées ici s’arriment à des produits (pain, probiotiques, compléments alimentaires), à des pratiques (les régimes « sans », le mouvement « zéro déchet ») et à des enjeux (l’autonomie alimentaire des villes, l’alimentation en fin de vie, la malnutrition infantile et l’aide alimentaire).     Description: In 1991, construction work in the north-east neighbourhood of Marseilles was the opportunity of studying the quarter Sainte-Barbe (5th-17th century). These excavations revealed the remains of an extra muros quarter specialized in the production of pottery during the 13th century. For the first time in France, the production of urban polyvalent workshops over a hundred years could be analyzed (common unglazed ware, glazed cooking ware, painted tin-glazed ware...). The presence of a kiln of Islamic tradition as well as the types of shapes suggest a transfer of the know-how, moving-abouts of the craftsmen and of their productions, and offers a newer view upon the history of techniques and the origins of majolica in Southern France. This book presents a study about kilns with clay rods supporting the vessels around the Mediterranean basin an in the Near-East. It sheds light upon a firing technique which has disappeared in the West. An exceptional documentary source concerning ceramic techniques as well as the history of the City of Marseilles.

The considerable transformations of the methodologies have raised the need for a renewal of the questions on the funerary practices during Late Antiquity, a period marked by multiple political, social, demographic and cultural changes. The emergence field anthropology, which was the beginning of archaeothanatology, and then the recent development of collaborative approaches between various scientific fields (archaeothanatology, biochemistry and geochemistry, genetics, history, epigraphy, for example), have been decisive. The research collected in this book is structured around four main themes: Evolution of funerary practices over time; Social identity through death; Changing burial grounds (organisation and topography); Territories of the Empire (from the heart to the margins). These studies propose a review and a revision of the data, both anthropological and archaeological or historical on Late Antiquity, and reveal a mosaic of political, social, and cultural landscapes singularly rich and complex. In doing so, they demonstrate that we can truly understand the cultural and social structures of ancient communities and their potential transformations, based on the study of funerary practices.

    Description: L’ouvrage présenté ici trouve son origine dans un séminaire de l’EHESS, animé par Enric Porqueres I Gené de 2014 à 2017. Ce séminaire a été l’occasion de mener un travail collectif aux perspectives fructueuses et heuristiques. Le point central de la réflexion s’est focalisé sur le statut de l’embryon dans le champ de l’histoire et de l’anthropologie. L’Afrique de l’Ouest, la Mélanésie, le monde Inuit, la médecine ayurvédique constituent autant de cas explorés dans le cadre de ce séminaire, souvent accompagné de spécialistes de ces différentes aires culturelles. La mise en parallèle de ces ethnographies avec les travaux sur les contextes des biotechnologies contemporaines a permis de dégager une série de récurrences qui semblent bonnes à penser. Les parallélismes entre les discours embryologiques dans une approche ontogénétique, de constitution de l’être, et ceux sur les origines de l’humanité propres à chacun des contextes analysés ont été étudiés. Deux parties structurent cet ouvrage qui comporte douze textes, mêlant approche anthropologique, philosophique, historique, sociologique et ethnographique. Une première partie porte sur la vie prénatale, d’abord mise en perspective par l’histoire des idées. Est également évoqué l’embryon tel qu’ici et ailleurs il est thématisé. On y trouve les contributions de Luc Brisson (CNRS), Christèle Barois (Universitat Wien), Stéphane Dugast (IRD/MNHN), Laurent Dousset (EHESS), Mary Picone (EHESS), Alejandro Bilbao (Université de los Lagos, Chili). The starting point of this book is the refusal to take play for granted, as a way of being and doing that is immediately accessible and decipherable: the intention to consider it more as a mental attitude, an inner adventure that is almost impossible to grasp, that we can only identify, designate and describe through words. No one understands themselves, or makes themselves understood, except through ways of saying (and thinking) drawn from common experience. Pierre Corneille’s Psyché, in her confusion, discovers this obvious fact: And I would say that I love you, Lord, if I knew what it is to love. So the player cannot say that he is playing, cannot say if he is playing—and first of all can only play if he knows what it is to play. In this strange roundabout way, the idea of play is more an anthropological approach than a psychological elucidation. When we set out to deal with the inexpressible, is it not appropriate, at least to begin with, to pay attention to what is said about it? Originally published by José Corti in 1989, and out of print for several years, Jacques Henriot’s seminal work urgently needed to be republished, as much as a way of thinking about play as a way of criticising thinking that is too quick to analyse what makes play and, perhaps more importantly, the play itself.

    Description: Under the direction of H. Kértbel, excavation on the site of Fanum Martis. present-day Corseul, has gradually revealed a vast trading and crafts centre within the archaeological protection area of Monterfil II. Uncovering a surface area of over 5000 m2 along the major axis of the former Coriosolati capital has enabled archaeologists to discern architectural and topographical changes which took place in this quarter from 15/10 BCE to the 4th century CE. The finds, which include a high proportion of Italian potters’ marks and Lipari amphorae, attest to the significance ot the town as a marketplace for items produced throughout the Mediterranean Basin. A metrological analysis of the remains, earned out by an archaeologist trained in architecture, has served as the basis for a reconstruction of elevations governed by the Tuscan order. Although there is still much work to be done in Corseul. the excavation carried out thus far at Monterfil II has shown how the urban layout and public and private domains were established during the reign of Augustus.

Excavations (1992-1997) were carried out with the dual objective of studying both the hull’s remains and its natural environment.Using the traditional techniques of ship archaeology to examine the wreck from the stem to the stern-post has enabled archaeologists to draw an ‘architectural portrait" of an early 7th century coaster. The 14.30 metre carvel built "frame-first" boat was intended for river navigation and built to carry a cargo of up to ten tonnes.     Description: The construction of the dam at Petit Saut by Électricité de France in the French Guyane gave place to an important archaeological rescue operation. Carried out from 1990 to 1995, this was the largest ever programme for an overseas French department of which the history was scarcely known. This volume represents the results of these researches in the Sinnamary river basin for the last four centuries of our millenium. Based on archives, travellers tales, old maps and archaeological work, this study brings new elements to the history of this part of South America : the formation of the colony during the 17th and 18th centuries, its settlement, its economy and material culture. With the development of gold production from the 19th century, the Guyane appears to be another California. The jail at Saut Tigre was created in 1933 for Indochinese prisoners who worked on development projects in the Inini territory up until 1944. This work contains an important dictionary of place-names which constitutes a documentary source without precedent. A second volume will soon be consecrated to the Amerindian sites discovered during the same operation.

Does the proliferation of data available online, coupled with the progress of artificial intelligence, impact the way we govern? Can algorithms ‘predict’ citizens' behaviour? How are these so-called predictive algorithms made, and by whom? Are they neutral and objective? What are the social, ethical and political issues involved in using data? And what are the commercial and market strategies at work? Can we still protect our data? Behind the processing of data, there are many different visions of the world at work. The point is to consider the algorithm as a political and social object, produced by actors as the result of private and now public commissions as well. These lines of code and complex calculations cannot be dissociated from the conditions of their production: they are embedded in a specific organisational and professional set-up and carried by political intentions and goals. Based on a series of case studies and through the contribution of extensive and unpublished empirical investigations, this volume provides a context for how our data are used and how this may influence governance and decision-making. The strength of this book, at the crossroads with economic sociology, law, political science and computer science, is to lay down the foundations for a political sociology of data and the digital age with the aim of surpassing and deconstructing the myths and beliefs conveyed by big data.

    Description: Identifying discursive features of hate speech is a complex process which could be affected by digital practices. On the one hand, it is relatively easy to analyse what we have called “discours de haine directe” (direct hate speech) which relies on three concomitant conditions: the pathemic discursive dimension, the negation of otherness and judgement speech acts (provocation, offence, threat…). But the “discours de haine dissimulée” (covert hate speech) is to be viewed from the perspective of the role played by power relations and ideologies in determining hate speech through rhetorical figures such as argument ad hominem, indirect speech acts (blame, contempt, guilt…) and the concepts of preserved ethos and “discursive memory”. In this sense, data analyses also involve a critical argumentative and sociolinguistic approach to discourse. Hate speech resorts to numerous rhetorical features that need to be clarified. Based on current events, explored through argumentative or discursive analyses that illustrate the theoretical propositions developed, this book presents concepts linked to the diversity of hate speech. Among other notions, let us mention: performativity, the figure of the enemy, disqualification, gender-bias, the “fascist-sphere” or prevention. The papers, which are relatively short and echo each other, offer an insight into what is at work within hate or radicalization speech.

    Description: Archaeological prospection by test trenches covering about fort Y hectares of a future gravel pit and archaeological excavations of about 15 hectares, conducted between 1989 and 1994, allowed a study of human occupation, settlement history and landscape change from the Neolithic to the Roman times. The study area covers an exceptionally large surface situated in the Holocene river plain of the Moselle valley near Crévéchamps, Meurthe-et-Moselle. With about 7000 recorded archaeological features, Marie-Pierre Koenig and her team followed a rigorous methodology to determine how, overt wo millennia, humans settled and lived in a landscape and settlement micro-region impacted by the shifting course of the Moselle river. The scientific approach comprises the grouping of the archaeological features according to their function, a typological analysis of them and the study of their setting in the former landscape, reconstructed by means of different environmental analyses. Due to a remarkable study of the Bronze and Iron pottery, supported by comparisons with numerous sites of Northwestern Europe, the authors suggest an evolutionary scheme of the settlement and its history. This approach is already considered to be a major reference for settlement archaeology. The first land clearing began during Neolithic times. During the following Bronze and Iron Age, settlement density increased. Palisades, roads and trenches followed the natural delimitations formed by the ancient river channels, while agricultural activities on the gravel domes in the alluvial river plain were moved cyclically. Later, the Gallo-Roman population drained and parcelized the land. Farms continued to exist, with Gallic traditions persisted, but human activities became more diverse with the opening of a large clay-pit -until a flood in the 2nd century AD led the occupants to abandon this excessively humid zone. The scientific results are enriched by a meticulous iconography and ample documentation: pottery catalogue, building descriptions, results of 14C datings, an index of the features, general maps and an index locorum. Chapter summaries given in English and German provide international readers with quick access to the main results.

    Description: Les linguistes spécialistes de l’espace francophone usent depuis plus d’une vingtaine d’années du concept de norme(s) endogène(s) élaboré initialement à partir de situations africaines. La question est de savoir si ce concept peut être étendu à d’autres situations de plurilinguisme, et à quelles conditions. Elle est posée depuis les aires franco-créolophones que sont les DOM, dans une démarche de confrontation avec d’autres situations de francophonie (Wallonie romane, Côte d’Ivoire, Louisiane, Maghreb). L’observation attentive de ces situations de contact révèle une permanente activité de brouillage et de négociation des lignes frontières antérieurement posées. Partant, les auteurs de cet ouvrage avancent que l’heure est davantage aux appartenances multiples qu’à une allégeance à une norme unique ; mais aussi, que la langue doit s’appréhender en termes de projet négociable, et non plus d’objet préconstruit, c’est-à-dire d’essence. La question des normes endogènes ou plus exactement du processus de leur production s’actualise alors non pas à partir d’une langue artificiellement coupée de son milieu écologique, mais à partir de ce qui se parle, un vernaculaire marqué par le plurilinguisme, même si les valeurs assignées aux différentes formes linguistiques demeurent, quant à elles, inscrites dans une sémiotique résolument discrète et socio-historiquement marquée.

Le propos de cet ouvrage, premier essai consacré au Fou d’Elsa depuis quarante ans, est de lier l’étude des thèses développées dans ce poème à celle de son armature déconcertante : jouant à la fois de la cohérence et de l’opacité de ses propos, le poème s’offre en effet à lire tel une citadelle demandant qu’on l’investisse. La description de cette citadelle nécessite aussi bien l’étude des matériaux à partir desquels le poète l’a édifiée que celle des voies d’accès qu’il ménage à son lecteur.

The evolution of the settlement area from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC is described in detail. The study of the linds shows an important analysis of then evolution and the different stages of development in what was a crucial period for the history of Gaul culminating in the « romanization ». The discoveries also allow an interpretation of several aspects of daily life : the domestic architecture, diet industries, trade… Based on the material culture, these studies allow us to deal with certain aspects of the economy and to describe the material culture of theSegusiavi within the regional context.This volume is followed by another monograph in the Daf series on the Gallo-Raman occupation.

André’s Une prison pour mémoire is based on a wealth of archival documents, but it also draws on no less than fifty interviews with living subjects, all conducted by the author between 2012 to 2021, in France and in Algeria. The editors of ENS Éditions and the author believed it was important to give voice to these historical actors whose memories and testimonies dwell far beyond the archive walls, and are therefore unheard, or even silenced. Their testimonies, now made available to the public, allow us to relay a layered history, one that is tied not only to Montluc prison, but also to Algerian immigration and the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962) as it unfolded in metropolitan France. The author has selected five interviews for this appendix. These form a chorus, each testimony resonating with another. We hear first from the FLN resistor, Salah Khalef, as he shares his memories of the war: the minutiae of his movements and life in France, the remarkable details of the attacks he carried out in the name of the FLN, his time on death row, and the relationship he forged with Claudie Duhamel, a young French student sentenced to ten years in Montluc prison for aiding the FLN. Khalef is followed by René Costechareire, a visitor to the prison. Third, we have Zohra Belghacem’s invaluable testimony, of herself as a young Algerian woman detained for her political activism. Khalef returns with his account of the conscientious objectors whom he encountered in Montluc, and finally, Didier Poiraudarrives with his testimony, adding even more depth to the evocations. The voices we hear in the present recount events of the past, but not only. These accounts take us into the historian's workshop. We hear the author confide in his interviewees his own story as he encourages the interlocutors to speak. At times, the discussions turn on questions about the writing of history rather than on those about actual events. What do we make of all of this? What is the role of the witness and that of the historian? Why do we tell each other stories? How do personal stories differ from the historical? Or do they? These are the questions that surface in this volume.

The sets of objects studied, primarily ceramics, have come to constitute a valuable reference resource for the Lyon region. They testify to a composite cultural profile for the early Bronze Age. combining northern and southern characteristics, while the Bell Beaker cultural background subsists. During the late Bronze I period, however. the southern features give way to influences of the Jura and Burgundian regions and those derived from the north-western façade of the Alps. Palaeo-environmental studies conducted in conjunction with the archaeological work provide the basis for an investigation of the landscape during the Bronze Age and the foundation of the populations’ subsistence economy, in keeping with the basic outlines established for the temperate regions of Western Europe.

This research examines how, through the practices of recruiting, training and deploying these women, “Filipina” otherness is co-constructed by multiple local, national and transnational actors, such as recruitment agencies and pre-migration training centres. This book thus offers the opportunity to consider the construction of otherness from the perspective of the migration industry and the colonial history of the archipelago. It contributes to the reflections on the coloniality of power, the gendered and racial construction of qualification, the normalisation of bodies and the transnational governance of migration.

    Description: Walter Benjamin est resté célèbre grâce à ses travaux en tant que philosophe, historien de l’art ou encore critique littéraire. Cet ouvrage présente un aspect méconnu de ses activités : entre 1927 et 1933, Benjamin a enregistré une centaine d’interventions au microphone sur les antennes de Berlin et Francfort et s’est efforcé de dépasser les formes journalistiques de pur divertissement. À travers ses chroniques littéraires ou ses contes radiophoniques pour enfants, le philosophe berlinois a souhaité repenser le matériau sonore diffusé sur les ondes. Ce livre original propose d’aller à la rencontre de Walter Benjamin par le prisme de sa voix. Les recherches de Philippe Baudouin à l’origine du présent ouvrage tendent à faire entendre l’écho du philosophe, en proposant de redécouvrir l’intérêt à la fois théorique et pratique dont il témoigna pour la radio. L’ouvrage comprend également des annexes sonores, avec d’une part les deux seuls témoignages sonores du philosophe connus à ce jour, extraits de la pièce radiophonique pour enfants Chahut autour de Kasperl, diffusée à la radio de Cologne le 9 septembre 1932, et d’autre part une interview de Stéphane Hessel réalisée par Philippe Baudouin pour France Culture, dans laquelle ce premier témoigne reconnaître la voix de Benjamin dans le personnage de Kasperl. Ce livre est une réédition augmentée du livre de Philippe Baudouin paru en 2009 aux Éditions de la Maison des sciences de l’homme. Il a reçu le prix Inathèque décerné par l’Institut national de l’audioviosuel.

    Description: Dans le débat qui s’est noué autour de la gestion du couple coût-valeur dans la littérature, les contributeurs partent soit du coût, soit de la valeur pour le client, mais ne proposent pas de dispositif formel d’articulation. Notre proposition de pilotage de la performance organisationnelle par la valeur ajoutée horaire (VAH), outre sa cohérence avec une stratégie fondée sur les ressources, amorce la mise en place d’une articulation entre la valeur vendue et ses modalités de production à travers le concept de l’heure de valeur ajoutée, puisque le temps est à la fois un indicateur de mesure (sa représentation) et un indicateur de pilotage (son interprétation). La méthode VAH se présente à la fois comme une méthode de calcul de la production de valeur et comme une méthode de management par la valeur de l’organisation.
