    Description: Transcending the dialectic between appearance and reality, Euripides succeeded in giving human intelligibility to a new Helena, who never loved Paris nor fled with him. Menelaus' wife must vindicate to her newfound husband that she is the real Helena, quite different from the ghost that the hero brought with him from Troy. The volume analyzes the various resources of re-characterization of Helena in Euripides' tragedy. ; Los personajes de la tragedia ática han sido ampliamente estudiados desde perspectivas en las que, a menudo, sus palabras y actos se explican a partir de nuestras nociones modernas sobre la mente humana y la personalidad, y desde valoraciones éticas y juicios morales ajenos a la Grecia clásica. El ensayo Rescatando a Helena se propone contemplar la caracterización de Helena en la tragedia homónima de Eurípides desde una perspectiva en la que la inteligibilidad humana del personaje no procede del supuesto descubrimiento de su conciencia interna o de su psique individual, sino de la adecuada subordinación de la caracterización de Helena a la acción de la obra en la que dicha caracterización está orgánicamente integrada. En vez de aislar al personaje del contexto dramático al que pertenece, como si estuviese dotado de una identidad idiosincrática, mi ensayo no intenta descubrir quién es realmente Helena leyendo entre líneas por debajo de la superficie textual, sino cómo sus palabras y acciones logran conmover eficazmente al auditorio original de la obra. Frente a nuestras lecturas eruditas y reflexivas de los textos conservados, los espectadores del siglo V a. C. acudían al Teatro de Dioniso para ver y oír las acciones y las palabras de los personajes trágicos dentro de un espectáculo más amplio que incluía música y danza. Es decir, la tragedia ática era ante todo una experiencia emocional, no una ocasión para la introspección psicológica o la reflexión filosófica.

    Description: In an article entitled “Per una nuova valutazione del Quattrocento francese” published in 1957 on the threshold of the first booklet of "Studi Francesi", Franco Simone affirmed that philological restitution of texts and understanding of their place inside the culture that had products were the premise essential, before any exegesis or critical interpretation, to achieve a redefinition of overly limited historiographical paradigms in which the French literature from the late Middle Ages had been located until that time. We know that the research of the Italian scientist has powerfully dissipated the historiographical myth of the 15th century Gothic opposed to the blooming of Italian culture, for the benefit of an enhancement of wealth and fertility a period which testifies, among other things, to an acute historical awareness and of great interest for the ancient tradition, as well as for the great founders of Italian Humanism; in the following decades, synergistic efforts specialists largely trained in French, Belgian and Italian schools have resulted in the publication of numerous studies and editions in the field of literature in French medium, in favor of the base for a imposing critical work that has refined, corrected and deepened the suggested perspective formerly by the author of La coscienza della rinascita negli umanisti francesi.
    Description: Dans un article intitulé « Per una nuova valutazione del Quattrocento francese » paru en 1957 au seuil du premier fascicule des « Studi Francesi », Franco Simone1 affirmait que la restitution philologique des textes et la compréhension de leur place à l’intérieur de la culture qui les avait produits étaient la prémisse indispensable, avant toute exégèse ou interprétation critique, pour parvenir à une redéfinition des paradigmes historiographiques trop limités dans lesquels la littérature française du Moyen Âge tardif avait été située jusqu’à cette époque. On sait que les recherches du savant italien ont contribué puissamment à dissiper le mythe historiographique d’un XVe siècle gothique opposé à l’efflorescence de la culture italienne, au profit d’une valorisation de la richesse et de la fécondité d’une période qui témoigne, entre autres, d’une conscience historique aiguë et d’un grand intérêt pour la tradition antique, ainsi que pour les grands fondateurs de l’Humanisme italien ; dans les décennies suivantes, les efforts synergiques de spécialistes formés en grande partie à l’école française, belge et italienne ont abouti à la publication de nombreuses études et éditions dans le domaine de la littérature en moyen français, en fournissant la base pour un travail critique imposant qui a affiné, corrigé et approfondi la perspective suggérée autrefois par l’auteur de La coscienza della rinascita negli umanisti francesi.

    Description: This book deals with the historical development of a group of four Spanish adjectives and adverbs: preciso / precisamente, justo / justamente, exacto / exactamente and cabal / cabalmente. Based on large historical corpus data-samples, this study combines quantitative and qualitative analysis with semasiological and onomasiological approaches and its focus lies on the diachronic development of three discourse functions (focussing, affirmation and reformulation). The results are discussed with reference to current theories of language change (grammaticalization, pragmaticalization, thetical grammar and cooptation) and explanatory factors such as analogy and changes in frequency.
    Description: Anhand einer historischen Korpusanalyse werden die spanischen Adjektiv-Adverb-Paare justo / justamente, cabal / cabalmente, preciso / precisamente y exacto / exactamente aus semasiologischer sowie onomasiologischer Perspektive analysiert. Die Studie kombiniert quantitative und qualitative Analysen und das Hauptaugenmerk liegt auf der diachronen Entwicklung der drei Diskursfunktionen (Fokussierung, Affirmation und Reformulierung). This volume presents a number of carefully commissioned essays that demonstrate the fertility and originality of recent work in Medieval Studies. Above all, they have been selected for relevance. Most contributors are in the earlier stages of their careers and their approaches clearly reflect how interdisciplinary methodologies applied to Medieval Studies have potential repercussions and value far beyond the boundaries of the Middles Ages. These chapters are powerful demonstrations of the value of medieval research to our own times, both in terms of providing answers to some of the specific questions facing humanity today and in terms of much broader considerations. Taken together, the research presented here also provides readers with confidence in the fact that Medieval Studies cannot be neglected without a great loss to the understanding of what it means to be human.
