    Description: Revolution, Krieg und Nation: Dass dieser Dreiklang den Übergang von der alteuropäischen Gesellschaft zu den modernen Staatsnationen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts begleitete, gehört zu den Grundüberzeugungen der Geschichtswissenschaft vom "langen" 19. Jahrhundert. Im "Age of Revolutions" gaben die Ideen von Freiheit und Gleichheit mit ihrer systemerschütternden Kraft einem ganzen Zeitalter ihren Namen. Aber gilt der Zusammenhang von Krieg, Revolution und Nationalismus auch an den Rändern Europas und über Europa hinaus? Wie steht es um den asiatischen Teil der Sowjetunion, um Mexiko, die Türkei? Angelehnt an die grundlegenden Forschungen Dieter Langewiesches hinterfragen zehn Experten eine der wirkmächtigsten Meistererzählungen der Geschichtswissenschaft. Dabei gehen sie weit über den traditionellen mitteleuropäischen Forschungsrahmen hinaus und untersuchen Beispiele revolutionärer Erhebungen in Süd- und Osteuropa ebenso wie die Entwicklungen auf dem amerikanischen Kontinent. Zwei Zeiträume stehen im Mittelpunkt: Die Jahrzehnte um 1800 als dem klassischen Revolutionszeitalter und die Jahre um den ersten Weltkrieg, in dessen Umfeld erneut territoriale und politische Ordnungen in Frage gestellt und neu gestaltet wurden.

    Description: In der Arbeitswelt der DDR bestanden markante soziale Ungleichheiten, die sich mit der Vereinigung verschärften. Die Gesellschaft der DDR war stark über die Arbeit im Betrieb organisiert, die wesentlich zur »Vergesellschaftung« beitrug. Da Betriebe das soziale und materielle Leben organisierten, prägten sie auch soziale Ungleichheit, obwohl sich die DDR als egalitäre Gesellschaft verstand. Jessica Lindner-Elsner untersucht am Beispiel des VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach, das den Wartburg baute, wie sich Arbeitsbedingungen und soziale Ungleichheit wandelten. Dies zeigt sie für die Kernbelegschaften und vulnerable Arbeiter:innen wie etwa Strafgefangene, Menschen mit Behinderungen und Ausländer. Sie waren gegenüber Mitarbeiter:innen in Normalarbeitsverhältnissen benachteiligt. Deutlich wird zudem die Ungleichbehandlungen von Frauen, die aufgrund fortbestehender Rollenverteilungen weniger flexibel auf Arbeitsanforderungen regieren konnten. Die Autorin fragt, wie solche Benachteiligungen im planwirtschaftlichen System entstanden. Ebenso zeigt sie, wie sich die Muster sozialer Ungleichheit im Übergang zur Marktwirtschaft veränderten, als das Automobilwerk durch die Treuhandanstalt abgewickelt wurde und mit Opel in Eisenach ein neuer Hersteller übernahm.

Zu europäischen Herrschersiegeln dieser Zeit existiert bis heute nicht einmal ein Corpus. Dieser Band greift ebendiese Lücke auf, um die politische Kommunikation mittels Herrscherbildern auf Massenmedien der Franken im ständigen Vergleich mit denen anderer poströmischen Kulturen (Oströmer, Angelsachsen, Langobarden, Westgoten etc.) zu untersuchen und die teils höchst unterschiedlichen Entwicklungen zu erklären. Dabei wird auch vor heißdiskutierten Themen wie dem „Monetarierwesen" oder der „arabo-byzantinischen" Münzprägung nicht haltgemacht. Dabei kommt auch der Filmemacher selbst zu Wort.

Stattdessen hebt er die Notwendigkeit von Aushandlung in einer innereuropäischen kolonialen Kontaktzone hervor, die bisher nicht auf diese Art untersucht wurde.

    Description: In the middle of the 9th century, the Abbey of Fulda founded a subsidiary monastery on the Weser, which was likely transformed into a collegiate monastery in the 10th century. In 1259, the abbot of Fulda sold his rights to the Bishop of Minden. After the Reformation, the episcopal rights passed to the Welfish sovereign in 1576. The collegiate monastery underwent a gradual secularization process from 1850 to 1863. The biographies of the personnel of the Boniface monastery attest to the close connections between the foundation and the city. Beyond Hameln, the book provides prosopographical material for the comparative study of medieval collegiate monasteries.

    Description: "Verantwortung und Passion - Emma und Henry Budge als großzügige Stifter und Förderer der hamburgischen Kultur. Das am Hamburger Alsterufer erbaute, bemerkenswert großzügig dimensionierte Wohnhaus von Emma und Henry Budge trug zu Recht den Titel »Palais«. Heute residiert hier die Hochschule für Musik und Theater. Von der Hansestadt aus entfaltete das Ehepaar eine rege mäzenatische Tätigkeit, in deren Zuge unter anderem Heime für Hilfsbedürftige etabliert und die Universitäten in Frankfurt und Hamburg unterstützt wurden. Vor allem Emma Budge trug zudem eine umfangreiche und hochkarätige Sammlung angewandter Kunst zusammen, die nach ihrem Tod in den Besitz der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg übergehen sollte. Doch dazu kam es nicht: Nach ihrem Tod musste die Sammlung von den Erben versteigert werden, und im Palais am Alsterufer richtete sich der nationalsozialistische »Reichsstatthalter« ein. Das philanthropische Lebenswerk war damit unwiederbringlich zerstört. Mit dieser ersten umfassenden Biographie aus der Feder Karen Michels` über das außergewöhnliche Ehepaar Budge wird es verdient gewürdigt. Emma (1852-1937) und Henry (1840-1928) Budge Jahrzehntelang lebten die Budges in New York, wo der aus Frankfurt stammende Henry Budge als erfolgreicher Banker und Eisenbahnfinanzier ein enormes Vermögen machte. 1903 kehrte er mit seiner Frau Emma nach Deutschland zurück und ließ sich in Hamburg nieder, der Heimat seiner Gattin."

    Description: Rosa Schapire - emanzipierte Frau, leidenschaftliche Förderin expressionistischer Kunst, entwurzelt im Londoner Exil, aber Kämpferin bis zum Schluss. »Hätte ich im Mittelalter gelebt, ich wäre wohl eine Nonne oder Heilige geworden«, schrieb Rosa Schapire kurz vor ihrem Tod 1954. Um die Jahrhundertwende hatte sie sich gegen traditionelle Rollenbilder und für ein Leben als Intellektuelle entschieden. Als eine der ersten Frauen wurde sie im Fach Kunstgeschichte in Heidelberg promoviert, zog 1905 nach Hamburg und begeisterte sich dort für den gerade aufkommenden Expressionismus – besonders für die Künstlergruppe »Brücke« und Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, den sie später als Mäzenin unterstützte. Ihr Einsatz für die neue Kunstrichtung, die von den Nationalsozialisten als »entartet« verfemt wurde, machte sie – zumal als Jüdin – den Machthabern verdächtig. Der antisemitischen Verfolgung entging sie nur aufgrund ihrer Flucht nach London 1939. Während der Kriegsjahre baute sich Rosa Schapire dort eine neue, allerdings zeitlebens prekäre Existenz u. a. als Übersetzerin auf. Ihre Briefe aus den letzten Lebensjahren an Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, die hier erstmals umfänglich ausgewertet werden, zeigen eine exilierte Frau, die trotz Sorgen und Todessehnsucht, doch immer die Kraft fand, sich für die expressionistische Kunst einzusetzen.

With this volume, the Institut für niederrheinische Kulturgeschichte und Regionalentwicklung (InKuR) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, in cooperation with Gerd Dethlefs, has focused on the culture of nobility in the Lower Rhine-Westphalian region. The focus lies on the methods of conflict resolution within this social class in the Middle Ages and early modern period, from duels to court proceedings. Furthermore, an exhibition at the Ruhr Museum on the nobility in the Ruhr region, which was on display in the city of Essen in 2021/22, is presented. Other contributions are dealing with the Christian missionization of the Lower Rhine region and the siege of the city of Moers by Royal Spanish troops during the Eighty Years' War. A fundamental account of the relationship between the Dutch and German languages rounds off the volume.

    Description: Comment expliquer la popularité du football à l’échelle européenne ? Une des pistes pour répondre à cette question est d’étudier le rôle de l’Union des associations européennes de football (UEFA) qui n’a eu de cesse d’agir en vue de renforcer les échanges footballistiques au niveau européen. À partir du dépouillement d’archives inédites, ce livre répond à un vide historiographique en proposant de retracer la genèse et la formation de l’UEFA dans une perspective globale et qui privilégie le long terme. Nous défendons ici la thèse que la mise en place de cette organisation au milieu des années 1950 est un tournant dans l’histoire du football européen. Trois axes principaux complémentaires sont développés tout au long de cet ouvrage. Le premier traite du rôle de la FIFA (Fédération internationale de football association), puis de l’UEFA dans le développement d’une dynamique européenne du jeu. Le deuxième questionne la possibilité qu’ont les dirigeants du football de créer un organisme qui transcende les barrières de la Guerre froide (à sa fondation, l’UEFA compte une trentaine de pays européens). Finalement, le troisième interroge les raisons de la constitution de l’UEFA durant les années 1950 ainsi que le modèle d’organisation choisi par ses promoteurs.

Unter der Herausgeberin Hildegard Brenner wurde die »alternative« zu einem Forum intellektueller Entdeckungen und Wiederentdeckungen. Ideengeschichtliche Traditionen des westlichen Marxismus wurden hier ebenso diskutiert wie der französische Strukturalismus und die feministische Kritik der Psychoanalyse, literaturpolitische Auseinandersetzungen in Ost und West ebenso wie die politischen Bewegungen der Zeit. Einen Leitfaden der »alternative« bildete die fortlaufende Reflexion darüber, wie mit intellektuellen Mitteln gesellschaftliche Wirkung zu erzeugen sei - bis im linken Krisenjahrzehnt der 1970er Jahre vermehrt das Scheitern an diesem Anspruch zum Thema der Zeitschrift wurde. Moritz Neuffer rekonstruiert die Kollektivbiografie der Redakteurinnen, Autoren und Leserinnen und fragt, was das Publizieren in der »journalistischen Form« der Zeitschrift von anderen Formen des Denkens und Schreibens unterscheidet.

    Description: Das Leben Helmuth Plessners - Zeugnis einer Geistesgeschichte zwischen Exil und Remigration. Helmuth Plessner ist einer der interessantesten deutschen Intellektuellen des 20. Jahrhunderts. In der Weimarer Republik wies der Mitbegründer der philosophischen Anthropologie radikale Ideologien zurück. Als »Halbjude« 1933 von der Universität Köln entlassen, emigrierte er in die Niederlande und lehrte an der Universität Groningen, bis er 1943 von der deutschen Besatzungsmacht erneut relegiert wurde. Die letzten Kriegsjahre überlebte er im Untergrund. Nach dem Krieg erhielt er seine Groninger Professur zurück und nahm 1951 einen Ruf nach Göttingen an. Plessner wirkte entscheidend am Wiederaufbau der Philosophie an den deutschen Universitäten nach 1945 mit und gehört zu den Gründungsvätern der bundesdeutschen Soziologie. Bekannt wurde er vor allem mit seiner im Exil entstandenen Deutschlandstudie »Die verspätete Nation«. Carola Dietze legt die erste Biographie Helmuth Plessners vor, die auf Archivquellen basiert. Sie führt in Plessners Philosophie ein und analysiert, welchen Einfluß die Erfahrung der Emigration auf sein Denken hatte. Exemplarisch werden der Verlauf eines Wissenschaftsexils in den Niederlanden, die Gründe für eine Rückkehr nach Deutschland und die Situation eines Remigranten in der Bundesrepublik der fünfziger Jahre untersucht.

Emil Artin zählt zu den maßgeblichen Mathematikern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Geboren 1898 in Wien, kam er 1922 nach Hamburg, wo er in seiner wissenschaftlichen Karriere mit bahnbrechenden Arbeiten wesentlich dazu beitrug, dass die Mathematik an der noch jungen Hamburgischen Universität Weltgeltung erlangte. Im Herbst 1937 verließ Artin wegen der NS-Diktatur und der jüdischen Herkunft seiner Ehefrau Natascha Deutschland. Zwei Jahrzehnte lang lebten sie mit den drei gemeinsamen Kindern in den USA. Artin wirkte als Professor an den Universitäten von Notre Dame, Bloomington und Princeton. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Emigranten kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück und hatte von 1958 bis zu seinem frühen Tod im Dezember 1962 einen Lehrstuhl an seiner »alten« Universität Hamburg inne. Das Porträt zeigt Emil Artin nicht nur als brillanten Forscher, Lehrer und Vortragenden, sondern als vielseitig interessierten Menschen. Artin hatte eine ausgeprägte Neigung zur Musik, spielte mehrere Instrumente und bewegte sich in einem kreativen Freundeskreis aus bedeutenden Wissenschaftlern und Künstlern. Eine zweimonatige Reise nach Island im Jahr 1925 hielt er in einem Reisetagebuch sowie in Fotografien fest. Emil Artin (1898-1962) kam nach seinem Studium in Wien und Leipzig 1922 als Assistent an das Mathematische Seminar der Hamburgischen Universität, wo er innerhalb weniger Jahre zum Ordinarius aufstieg. Von der NS-Diktatur 1937 ins Exil vertrieben, war er zwei Jahrzehnte lang an amerikanischen Universitäten tätig, bevor er 1958 nach Hamburg zurückkehrte.

    Description: This volume concludes the edition of Heinrich von Mügeln's smaller poems. This is the first complete edition of the hymns of one of the most important poets of the 14th century. The volume also contains two of Mügeln's Latin texts: 'Artes liberales' and 'Libri tocius biblie', two summaries on the liberal arts and the books of the Old Testament. The centerpiece of the volume is 'Der meide kranz', an allegorical poem about the struggle between the liberal arts and between the virtues and nature, written in honor of Emperor Charles IV. An index of names and words makes the entire edition accessible and thus forms an essential key to the author's oeuvre.

    Description: Bamberg verfügte seit dem Spätmittelalter über ein differenziertes Gesundheitswesen mit Spitälern, Siechenhäusern, Apotheken und Badstuben; seit dem frühen 16. Jahrhundert stellten die Bischöfe zudem Hof- und Leibärzte an. Anders als in protestantischen Städten wie Nürnberg kam es im katholischen Bamberg jedoch nicht zur Zentralisierung und Kommunalisierung der Gesundheitsfürsorge, so dass diese von einer Vielzahl von Akteuren gestaltet wurde. Charakteristisch für das 16. und 17. Jahrhundert war das Verständnis von Epidemien als Strafen Gottes für die Sünden der Menschen, das nicht nur von Herrschern und Klerus, sondern auch von studierten Ärzten geteilt wurde. Gleichwohl sahen Regierung und Ärzteschaft die Untertanen in der Pflicht, sich bestmöglich gegen Epidemien zu schützen, und empfahlen zu diesem Zweck Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung von Hygiene und Luftqualität sowie zur Isolation und Behandlung von Infizierten. Da nicht alle Untertanen Zugang zu Ärzten hatten und die vormoderne Medizin vielen Krankheiten machtlos gegenüberstand, entwickelte sich in Bamberg wie in anderen Städten überdies ein medizinischer Marktplatz, auf dem auch reisende Heiler sowie der örtliche Scharfrichter ihre Dienste anboten. Auf eine neue Grundlage gestellt wurde das Bamberger Medizinalwesen durch die Gründung des Allgemeinen Krankenhauses im Jahre 1789, das sich der Behandlung heilbarer Krankheiten widmete. Obwohl nach 1800 auch eine medizinisch-chirurgische Schule und eine der ersten Nervenheilanstalten Deutschlands entstanden, blieb das Gesundheitswesen bis weit ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein von vormodernen Strukturen und Vorstellungen geprägt. Diese Entwicklungen werden in einer Ausstellung in der Staatsbibliothek Bamberg, die in einem studentischen Seminar konzipiert wurde, sowie in diesem Begleitband anhand von rund 40 Exponaten nachvollzogen.

Antworten auf diese Fragen gibt die Briefsammlung des Amtsträgers Ludovico Foscarini (1409–1480). Seine Briefe entstanden als Reaktion auf ein Dilemma: Nur als Statthalter und Gesandter konnte Foscarini in der Konkurrenz mit anderen venezianischen Adeligen bestehen. In der Peripherie war er aber von den Verteilungswettkämpfen abgeschnitten, die in der Zentrale in geheimen Abstimmungen abliefen. Kunstvolle Briefe an andere Politiker und politisch einflussreiche Intellektuelle sollten das Problem lösen. Diese Briefe nutzten humanistische, juristische und theologische Metaphern, um Themen anzusprechen, die außerhalb der offiziellen Gremien tabu waren. Foscarini legte eine didaktisch aufgebaute Briefsammlung mit den wirksamsten seiner Briefe an –　ein Erfahrungsschatz, den er seinen Söhnen für ihre politischen Laufbahnen hinterließ.     Description: Kein Krieg wurde sexualwissenschaftlich so intensiv erforscht wie der »Große Krieg« von 1914 bis 1918. Er fiel in eine Phase, als die »Entdeckung« des Unbewussten und die Begründung der Sexualwissenschaft als interdisziplinäres Fach erst wenige Jahre zurücklagen. Richard Kühl untersucht, wie die neuen Expert*innen im Kriegsraum ein regelrechtes Laboratorium der Triebe vorfanden und sich noch bis in die 1920er Jahre hinein mit den sozialen und kulturellen Kriegsfolgen kontrovers auseinandersetzten. Seine Analysen reichen bis in die Zeit um 1930, in der Sexolog*innen wie Magnus Hirschfeld in der »umkämpften Erinnerung« an die Materialschlachten auf eine Weise mitmischten, die das gesamte politische Spektrum beschäftigte.

    Description: Als Produzent für Regenmäntel wurde die Firma Rappolt & Söhne, die seit 1928 den Markennamen ERES trug, bekannt. Drei Generationen prägten die Unternehmensgeschichte. Der Name durfte bleiben, die Familie nicht. Das Hamburger Unternehmen Oppenheim & Rappolt wurde 1862 gegründet, firmierte seit 1897 unter dem Namen Rappolt & Söhne und existierte bis 1982 unter dem Markennahmen ERES. Gründer Joseph Rappolt (1835-1907) und danach seine Söhne Paul, Arthur und Franz leiteten die Geschicke der Firma, deren Sitz sich seit 1912 in der Mönckebergstraße 11 befand. Bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg waren Regenmäntel das Hauptgeschäft, später ergänzten leichte und schwerere Stoffmäntel für Damen und Herren das Sortiment. 1938 mussten die Rappolts ihre Firma verkaufen, als Juden drohte ihnen die Deportation. Die meisten jüngeren Familienmitglieder konnten unter großen Schwierigkeiten aus Deutschland fliehen, die älteren wollten sich nicht zur rechtzeitigen Emigration entscheiden; einige von ihnen wählten den Freitod, andere wurden ermordet. Franz Rappolt (1870-1943) – der sich als angesehener Bürger ehrenamtlich in Vereinen und im Plenum der Hamburger Handelskammer engagierte, diese Tätigkeit jedoch 1933 unfreiwillig aufgeben musste – starb wie seine Schwägerin Johanna (1870-1942) in Theresienstadt, sein Bruder Paul (1863-1940) starb noch vor der Deportation. Das Rappolt-Haus in der Mönckebergstraße 11 und 13 prägt bis heute das Bild von Hamburgs bekanntester Einkaufsmeile. Das imposante Gebäude wurde im Auftrag der Firma Rappolt & Söhne errichtet. Nach 1933 mussten die beiden Firmeninhaber Franz und Paul Rappolt mit ihren Familien erleben, wie die Nationalsozialisten ihre erfolgreiche Arbeit torpedierten, sich Schritt für Schritt ihres Eigentums bemächtigten und sie zuletzt mit dem Tod bedrohten.

In der vorliegenden Untersuchung wird Seeßelbergs Lebensgang, seinem wissenschaftlichen Werk, seiner akademischen Lehre, seinen ehrenamtlichen Tätigkeiten und seinem Verhältnis zum Nationalsozialismus nachgegangen. Eingehend beschrieben wird außerdem Seeßelbergs Sicht auf die Schlüsselbegriffe seines Wirkens: ›Volk‹ und ›Kunst‹. Versucht wird hiermit erstmals eine umfassende Betrachtung von Friedrich Seeßelbergs Persönlichkeit und seinem Gesamtwerk.

    Description: Despite the opposition of two parties - first the Whigs and the Tories, then the Liberals and the Conservatives - 19th century Britain was characterized by a political culture of moderation. The bearers of this political culture were a group of politicians who always sought the middle way between the extremes and were known as Liberal Tories or Liberal Conservatives. This book fills a research gap by examining the development of this British Liberal Conservatism in the period from 1750 to 1850, first looking at Edmund Burke's political philosophy and then showing how the Liberal Tories and Liberal Conservatives who followed him drew on his thinking. It shows how politicians such as George Canning and Sir Robert Peel, based on Burke and the political philosophy of the "Old Whigs", pursued a centrist policy that was always oriented towards the virtues of moderation and prudence. The book thus sheds light on the conservative variant of liberalism that characterized Great Britain throughout the 19th century.

In drei Fallstudien folgt Lucas Knierzinger dem Verhältnis von Dokumentation und Format, durch welches ein Nachleben entlang von Arbeitsmaterialien entworfen wird: in den Modellbüchern Bertolt Brechts, in den Notizbüchern von Peter Weiss und den vielfältigen Formaten, in denen Heiner Müller seine Gesprächsaufzeichnungen verarbeitet.     Description: This book addresses the question of vigilance in the face of an epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century, based on the example of the fight against the plague in the French Mediterranean. Because of its trans-Mediterranean trade, this region was particularly exposed to the risk of plague so that it sought to protect itself with concrete measures such as quarantine. ; Cet ouvrage s’intéresse au risque et à la vigilance face à la peste sur la côte méditerranéenne française dans la première moitié du 18e siècle. Entre 1720 et 1722, une terrible épidémie de peste frappe Marseille, la Provence, le Comtat-Venaissin et une partie du Languedoc, causant environ 100'000 décès. Aussi dramatique soit-elle, cette épidémie constitue une exception durant la première moitié du 18e siècle. La première partie de ce travail analyse les rapports entre vigilance, espace et communication et met en évidence une prévention qui s’exerce tant de manière transméditerranéenne que de manière interne au royaume de France. Une véritable «bureaucratie sanitaire» se met en place. La deuxième partie étudie les normes et les pratiques de la vigilance sanitaire, tant sur un plan politico-sanitaire (quarantaines des navires, des passagers et des marchandises) que sur un plan religieux (processions et prières pour endiguer la maladie). Enfin, la dernière partie se limite à la peste de 1720-1722 et illustre le passage d’une vigilance préventive à une vigilance réactive en s’intéressant aux «acteurs de la peste» et aux attitudes et tactiques développées face au fléau épidémique.

    Description: The life and miracles of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia are the subject of the 'Life of Elisabeth' by the Eisenach council scribe Johannes Rothe (ca. 1360-1434). Rothe, who had already written spiritual works and three extensive chronicles ('Eisenacher Stadtchronik', 'Thüringische Landeschronik' and 'Weltchronik'), offers a comprehensive rendition of the chronicle and legendary tradition in the rhyming verse legend of over 4,000 verses, whereby, in addition to the chronicles, he particularly exploits the Latin Vita of Dietrich von Apolda. In the formal connection to the legends of the saints and the orientation towards chronicles in terms of content, Rothe adopts a cross-genre standpoint. Elisabeth's life is integrated into the genealogy of the landgrave's dynasty and thus becomes part of the landgrave's memorial culture. In the history of the text's reception, with numerous copies up to the 18th century, there is evidence of corresponding emphases: the work was used partly as a devotional book and partly as part of the dynastic memoria of the Thuringian dynasty.

Cependant, les vauderies survenues à Lyon et Arras au XVe siècle comme les cas de possession du XVIIe siècle sont autant de témoignages de la présence de la sorcellerie dans les villes européennes. Les études de cas et les essais comparatifs réunis dans ce volume montrent qu'en dépit de la diversité des sociétés urbaines, la sorcellerie apparaît comme un révélateur des enjeux de pouvoir qui traversent les villes modernes.Dans sa postface, Carlo Ginzburg insiste sur la portée d'une approche comparatiste, toujours attentive aux écarts à la norme, et souligne l'importance d’aborder les procès de sorcellerie comme une manifestation particulière des tensions sociales et culturelles.

    Description: Terre de mélanges culturels et de politiques coloniales, la Tunisie a attiré de l’Europe des courants d’immigrations aussi bien que des visées impérialistes. La trajectoire des Juifs italiens, dits Livournais, s’inscrit au carrefour de ces axes. Une communauté enracinée en Tunisie depuis le xviie siècle, mais toujours assimilée au monde européen. Une population cosmopolite, mais jalousement attachée à Livourne et à l’Italie. Une double minorité, à l’égard tant de la nombreuse population juive locale que des cent mille émigrés italiens vivant en Tunisie au début du xxe siècle, mais toujours caractérisée par une forte identité collective. Pendant l’entre-deux-guerres, la place sociale de cette communauté fut remise en cause par une série de phénomènes convergents : l’essor du nationalisme tunisien, les tensions diplomatiques italo-françaises, et surtout par la montée au pouvoir du régime fasciste, résolu à encadrer les communautés d’émigration dans sa politique impériale. Sur la base de fonds d’archives et de témoignages inédits, ce travail reconstruit le parcours des Juifs italiens de Tunisie face aux stratégies de fascisation de Rome, en interrogeant les croisements identitaires dans les contextes d’émigration, la question de l’adhésion de masse au totalitarisme et le poids des médiateurs au sein des sociétés coloniales.

    Description: Organized through the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the symposium “Lascaux and Preservation Issues in Subterranean Environments” was held in Paris on February 26 and 27, 2009 under the chairmanship of Jean Clottes. It brought together nearly three hundred participants from seventeen countries with the goal of confronting research and interventions conducted in Lascaux Cave since 2001 with the experiences gained in other countries in the domain of preservation in subterranean environments. Twelve presentations addressed questions related to disciplines such as hydrogeology, climatology and microbiology in relation to the protection and valorization of decorated caves. The talks were followed by debates allowing the experts and all other participants to freely express themselves. This volume, which constitutes the proceedings of this symposium, is composed of the studies presented during the sessions and full transcriptions of the debates. It provides both a synthesis of the conservation activities realized at Lascaux between 2001 and 2009 and the state of research and the conditions of the cave as of 2009.

    Description: Hoffmann von Fallersleben unternahm 1819 seine erste Reise in die Niederlande. Zahlreiche Werke Hoffmanns bezeugen sein Interesse für das niederländische Sprachgebiet. Aus seiner Autobiographie, seinen Tagebüchern, Notizen, den Vorlesungen, der Korrespondenz sowie aus seinen Zeitungsartikeln lassen sich Erkenntnisse über seine Beziehungen in die Niederlande und nach Belgien ableiten. Aber weder die Beziehungen noch sein Belgien- und Niederlandebild sind bis heute erschöpfend erforscht worden. Diese Untersuchung will Hoffmanns Beziehungen zu den Niederlanden und zum nachmaligen Belgien sowie das Netzwerk, das er dort aufbaute, anhand seiner Korrespondenz und der Akten zu seiner Person rekonstruieren. Hoffmann schildert ein diffuses Bild der Nachbarn, das von einer deutsch-nationalen Einstellung geprägt ist. Zu fragen ist, ob sein positives Verhalten und seine negativen Äußerungen lediglich ideologisch motiviert waren und vorwiegend daher rührten, daß er, wie viele deutsche Intellektuelle im 19. Jahrhundert, versuchte, die Niederlande und Belgien einem deutschen Staatsgefüge einzugliedern, oder ob er vielmehr als Kulturvermittler zu gelten hat. Hoffmanns Briefwechsel umfaßt, soweit sich jetzt feststellen läßt, über 7000 Briefe, die hier erstmals in einem Verzeichnis erfaßt sind. Daneben werden unveröffentlichte Materialien aus deutschen, belgischen und niederländischen Archiven, die bisher in der Forschung nicht berücksichtigt wurden, vorgestellt.

De nombreuses études ont été publiées depuis une quarantaine d’années sur l’anthroponymie française. Les chercheurs se sont appliqués à collecter des données et à établir des statistiques. Mais il ne s’agit plus ici de comptabiliser mais d’expliquer. Pour ce faire, ce livre multiplie les comparaisons. Il étudie les évolutions sur une période longue et compare les choix de prénomination dans différentes régions pour établir une synthèse générale. Il remet en cause les conceptions courantes sur la prénomination et offrent de nouvelles hypothèses explicatives.     Description: In the late Iron Age, the northwest of Gaul is divided into several independent cities. In the framework of this archaeological investigation, eight of them were studied between the Channel and the Atlantic coasts. Contrary to what researchers have long admitted, this synthesis, outcome of a doctoral thesis, highlights the full integration of these western regions into the social processes that mark the end of the Iron Age in Celtic Europe. These processes lead to the development of urbanism and the structuring of territories between the 3th and 1st centuries BC. The approach consists in analyzing the forms and functions of urban areas, but also in studying the religious spaces (sanctuaries), the hillforts and the aristocratic rural settlements. Nowadays, this extensive data compilation makes it possible to reason on the economic, even administrative, links existing between these various types of sites. Lastly, it allows you to reflect about the social structuring of the cities and the evolution of their organizations until the Early Roman Empire.

Cette étude d’histoire économique ouvre la voie à une histoire des juifs « désenclavée » et réhabilite l’usure. Alors que balbutie le stéréotype qui transforme le juif en usurier, les prêteurs issus de la communauté hébraïque se révèlent dignes de foi et membres du corps politique.

Das NS-Regime nutzte fotoillustrierte Zeitschriften als wirkungsvolles Propagandainstrument, das Unterhaltung und ideologische Beeinflussung geschickt miteinander verband. Ein Großteil der Fotos stammte von Mitgliedern der Propagandakompanien. Neben Frontberichten wurden Beiträge aus Politik, Literatur, Musik, Radio und Film, aber auch Leser*innenbriefe, Privatfotos, Benimm- und Beziehungsratschläge veröffentlicht. Zeitschriften konnten gesammelt, ausgetauscht und zwischen Front und Heimat verschickt werden. Sie waren somit das ideale Medium für die Verknüpfung einer weiblich markierten Heimat und einer männlich visualisierten Kriegsfront – und damit auch der zu etablierenden Volksgemeinschaft. Der methodische Zugang der fotografischen Geste erschließt einen neuen Blick auf die Fotoproduktion als wesentlichem Bestandteil der nationalsozialistischen Öffentlichkeit.

    Description: Dresser pour le xxe siècle un bilan de l’Église catholique en France sur le plan de la morale sexuelle, tel est le projet de cet ouvrage. Le xxe siècle se décompose en trois moments évidents : le triomphe de la morale sexuelle traditionnelle dans la première moitié du siècle, avec une valorisation démesurée de la chasteté et de la fécondité du mariage. Le deuxième moment entre 1950 et 1978 est une longue période de crise de la doctrine traditionnelle que Paul VI tenta en vain d’étouffer. Mais le célibat sacerdotal et la condamnation de l’avortement et de l’homosexualité sont remis en cause. Cette dernière question qui n’émerge que tardivement sera abordée grâce au témoignage exceptionnel d’un prêtre homosexuel et pédophile. La tentative de Jean-Paul II de restaurer la morale sexuelle traditionnelle constitue une troisième phase. Comme chacun le sait, le pape n’a pas ramené les fidèles catholiques au respect des enseignements d’une éthique considérée par eux comme archaïque. Entre la doctrine intransigeante du magistère et des laïcs de plus en plus insoumis, les théologiens ont tenu une position stratégique : ont-ils contribué à renforcer et légitimer l’autorité du pape polonais ou préparé des accommodements tels que le pape François les propose aujourd’hui, voire des changements plus radicaux de la doctrine morale catholique ? Pour l’avenir du catholicisme, dans le monde développé du moins, la question sexuelle tient une place critique. L’Église est-elle capable d’abandonner ses « lois » de morale sexuelle ?

    Description: Au début du xviie siècle, un polémiste averti lançait à son auditoire, mi-protestant mi-catholique, cette sentence lapidaire : « Aujourd’huy, les disputes se réduisent à disputer comment il faut disputer. » Pour notre controversiste désabusé, dans ces rencontres entre théologiens, les moyens mangeaient la fin, les débats s’éternisant dans d’interminables disputes sur les conditions de la dispute. C’est de cette remarque – récurrente – qu’ont germé l’idée de ce livre et la volonté d’élargir le questionnement à des époques plus anciennes : à quoi bon ces rencontres répétées entre théologiens quand la conversion de l’adversaire semble si rarement le fruit des débats ? À nos yeux, l’amer constat que dresse ce théologien – des rencontres interreligieuses infécondes – n’est pas à attribuer à une quelconque myopie. Ce qu’il pointe est plus profond, plus essentiel. Il signale des enjeux alternatifs, il met sur la piste d’autres fonctions, moins évidentes ou moins assumées, des disputes interreligieuses. De ces grands débats, qui pensait vraiment sortir gagnant ? qui pouvait sérieusement se dire convaincu ? À partir de là, que recherchaient les acteurs de ces multiples scènes sans issue ?

    Description: Il existe au moins trois bonnes raisons d’étudier la sociabilité associative rurale en Mayenne entre les années 1830 et les années 1930. Premièrement, la sociabilité est un concept qui, après avoir connu un grand succès en sciences sociales il y a une quarantaine d’années puis avoir été considéré comme passé de mode, mérite qu’on y revienne dans une approche culturelle et sociale. Deuxièmement, le monde associatif dans les campagnes françaises au xixe siècle et au début du xxe siècle est un sujet encore trop peu étudié et auquel il reste à accorder toute la place qui lui revient dans les mutations de l’époque contemporaine, au même titre que l’école. Troisièmement, la France de l’Ouest est un espace injustement disqualifié par l’historiographie pour ce qui relève de la vie sociale. Des sociétés littéraires aux clubs sportifs, en passant par les cercles, les sociétés de cure, les corps de sapeurs-pompiers, les sociétés musicales, les patronages catholiques, les associations conscriptives, les amicales d’anciennes et d’anciens élèves et celles d’anciens combattants, il est alors possible de saisir comment, à l’époque contemporaine, une culture formalisée, incarnée par la sociabilité associative, émerge face à une culture coutumière, moins « civilisée », celle des veillées et des assemblées villageoises. Ce qui se joue là n’est pas tant affaire de remplacement que d’acculturation.

    Description: Considéré d’habitude comme le « père » de l’anarchisme français, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon entretient un rapport ambivalent avec la création littéraire. Cet essai retrace tout d’abord la relation de Proudhon à la littérature, telle qu’elle apparaît à travers ses ouvrages. Il analyse ensuite les discours tenus dans ses quatre journaux sur les triomphes du roman-feuilleton, visant la conception d’un feuilleton révolutionnaire capable de diffuser auprès du lectorat populaire, par le biais de la fiction, les idées et les théories qui aideront à son affranchissement. Une présentation des romans-feuilletons parus dans les diverses incarnations du journal Le Peuple est suivie par une étude plus approfondie de l’un d’entre eux, le roman Le Mont Saint-Michel, qui narre les aventures d’un groupe de républicains lors du célèbre épisode de la barricade du cloître Saint-Merry, clou tragique de l’insurrection avortée de 1832. Convoquant de nombreux auteurs connus (Michelet, Stendhal, Victor Hugo et Alexandre Dumas père) et oubliés, cette analyse veut offrir une réflexion sur la nature du roman historique et de l’écriture historiographique pendant une période clef pour leur développement.

Loin d’être un spectacle devenu un sport ou un sport devenu spectacle, la boxe est dès ses débuts doublement codifiée : pensée et structurée comme un sport, elle est aussi portée et mise en scène comme un spectacle, ces deux dynamiques étant indissociables. Ensemble, promoteurs de spectacles, dirigeants de fédérations, journalistes, managers et boxeurs participent à la structuration d’un marché des spectacles pugilistiques inséré dans un tissu de relations avec d’autres grandes villes européennes. À l’aube de la Première Guerre mondiale, bénéficiant de conditions économiques et sociales spécifiques, la scène parisienne s’impose progressivement comme un des foyers les plus actifs de la boxe, lui donnant la forme d’un spectacle à la fois mondain et populaire, avant de se transformer après-guerre. Comprendre l’historicité des spectacles pugilistiques revient alors à prendre au sérieux l’expression même de « spectacle sportif ».

    Description: Soigner les pauvres, telle est la vocation de milliers de jeunes femmes qui, tout au long du xixe siècle, prennent le voile en France et concrétisent ainsi un désir de vie religieuse et de service. Cet engagement ouvre aux femmes des voies pour s’affirmer hors de la famille, dans l’espace public et le monde du travail. Infirmières ou pharmaciennes, responsables de services d’hôpitaux et d’hospices, ou gardes-malades à domicile, ce sont les « bonnes » sœurs du xixe siècle. Figures de la charité, elles sont aussi les chevilles ouvrières du système public de santé dont elles accompagnent la médicalisation. Dans une société confrontée à une nouvelle pauvreté massive et alors que l’Église catholique s’inquiète de la déchristianisation populaire, les sœurs soignantes répondent aux attentes sociales et sanitaires, religieuses et morales de leur temps. La laïcisation républicaine signe-t-elle leur disparition ? Rien n’est moins sûr à en regarder leur présence dans Paris au début du xxe siècle. S’appuyant sur de nombreuses archives des couvents et des institutions hospitalières, cette enquête questionne la vocation des sœurs soignantes dans leur quotidien auprès des pauvres de la capitale. Elle propose une histoire du care qui éclaire les enjeux profanes et spirituels de la relation de soin.

    Description: Les paysages de l'Ouest de la France connaissent aujourd'hui une évolution rapide. Du Maine à l'Anjou et à la Bretagne, si l'on peut voir beaucoup d'arbres, il n'est pas sûr que l'on puisse encore observer un vrai bocage ! Le bocage a perdu le lien qu'il avait depuis son origine avec l'activité agricole : il reste une composante du paysage rural mais il n'est plus le cadre nécessaire du travail des agriculteurs. C'est la modification la plus importante qu'il ait connu depuis sa création. Le bocage n'est pas un milieu naturel : c'est un paysage construit ; il n'est pas là de toute éternité, mais il a été fabriqué et entretenu par des générations d'agriculteurs qui avaient besoin de haies pour pratiquer à la fois la culture et le pâturage. L'objet de l'ouvrage d'Annie Antoine est de porter un regard d'historien sur le paysage bocager de l'Ouest de la France : explorer les liens forts et durables tissés entre un paysage et ses habitants, lier la construction du bocage et ses transformations à l'évolution des sociétés rurales qui, de la fin du Moyen Âge aux mutations agricoles contemporaines, l'ont utilisé et transformé.

    Description: Le 24 février 2022, la Russie envahissait l’Ukraine, pays géographiquement et historiquement ancré à l’est du continent, mais qui proclama son indépendance du bloc soviétique en 1991 et se rapprocha peu à peu de l’Europe de l’Ouest. C’est dans le contexte brûlant des prémices de cette guerre qu’Angelika Nussberger a prononcé les quatre conférences qui composent ce livre. Au regard de la réception des idées des Lumières, des espoirs de construction d’une « maison commune européenne » (Mikhaïl Gorbatchev) et de la phase de désillusion après 2000, elle explore l’histoire de l’Europe sous l’angle du droit, montre en quoi la diversité non seulement des héritages juridiques – notamment constitutionnels – mais aussi des positions idéologiques peut représenter un obstacle à l’unité de l’Europe, et trace des voies possibles pour un avenir commun. Alors que le conflit russo-ukrainien cristallise aujourd’hui le clivage Est-Ouest, cet ouvrage éclaire l’actualité en analysant les divergences sur les valeurs fondamentales, à savoir la démocratie, les droits de l’homme et l’État de droit, qui fragilisent les relations entre l’Europe orientale et l’Europe occidentale depuis leur rencontre durant la décennie qui suivit la chute du mur de Berlin.

An Werke der neulateinischen Literatur wird zudem die Frage gerichtet, wie die Antike selbst einen Mußeraum eröffnet, wenn sie in späteren Texten rezipiert wird. Im Fokus stehen das griechische Theater, die Bibliothek, die römische Villa, der locus amoenus, der Garten und die Landschaft.

Gestion des risques par les sociétés passées, exploitation des ressources naturelles, mutation du regard porté sur l’environnement constituent quelques facettes d’une historiographie désormais mature et foisonnante. Les contributions réunies par le Réseau universitaire de chercheurs en histoire environnementale (RUCHE), à l’occasion de son 10e anniversaire, offrent un panorama international et pluridisciplinaire de cette révolution historiographique, en partant d’un état des lieux inédit dans quelques champs impactés par l’émergence d’une approche environnementale (telles l’histoire des mondes du travail et l’histoire maritime). La réflexion porte ensuite sur l’usage de sources et sur les méthodologies de recherche, en se fondant sur des exemples (comme les cartes) et en retraçant des expériences collectives de travail sur archives.     Description: Dans les Origines intellectuelles de la Révolution française, publiées en 1933, Daniel Mornet voit en la figure de Brissot « l’image complète de toutes les aspirations d’une génération ». Cet ouvrage vise à relancer son intuition en proposant, grâce à un travail inédit de dépouillement systématique de ses archives privées, une sociologie de l’entrée en révolution (et non de la pré-révolution, car on ne pouvait la prédire alors) d’une jeunesse intellectuelle au crépuscule de la société française d’Ancien Régime. Cet ouvrage permet de comprendre comment un homme du commun éduqué, d’abord désireux d’intégrer les hautes sphères de la société de son temps, devient l’un des principaux agents de son renversement. Habité par une idée de la noblesse fondée sur la vertu plutôt que sur la naissance, il s’en attribue les qualités et tente de les faire reconnaître sur le champ littéraire. Mais il se heurte à l’indifférence de ses pairs illustres et à ce qu’il appelle le « crime de bassesse », soit le destin d’être né dans la « classe des artisans ». Brissot a le sentiment de ne pas occuper sa juste place dans une société d’ordres et d’états. De frustré et méprisé, Brissot renaît à l’identité au sein d’une communauté des opprimés aux côtés du protestant, du juif, du quaker, de l’Américain, du Genevois, de l’Anglais, du Valaque, du Brabançon, du Batave, du paysan, du prisonnier et de l’esclave noir. De victime, il se fait observateur de la souffrance universelle, produit du despotisme, puis acteur de la Révolution, d’une révolution d’abord philosophique puis politique, à la fois universelle et nationale.

    Description: La mémoire collective nationale, qui a bien intégré le souvenir de la première femme bachelière, ne se souvient pas de celle qui fut la première à se voir décerner le titre de docteur ès lettres en histoire. Pas davantage dans sa région que dans son département d’origine ! Pourtant, elle est Normande. Après une licence de lettres obtenue à Caen et des études à la Sorbonne, c’est en 1923 que Madeleine Deries, une Saint-Loise, a ce privilège. L’événement est salué partout comme l’aboutissement d’une longue démarche d’émancipation féminine. Les amis, la presse, la communauté tout entière ne ménagent pas leurs congratulations hautement méritées. Ses thèses ont été publiées – Le district de Saint-Lô pendant la Révolution et L’École centrale du département de la Manche : an IV-an XI –, suivies d’articles d’un incontestable intérêt historique. Madeleine Deries représente cette longue revendication légitime d’égalité des sexes devant la connaissance. La jeune Saint-Loise, de ce point de vue, à la manière d’un guide de haute montagne, est une ouvreuse de voie. Son parcours, exemplaire à plus d’un titre, méritait bien qu’on s’y attarde. Et, pour ajouter à la pertinence de l’entreprise, la jeune femme, née en 1895, pleinement inscrite dans la vie locale saint-loise et caennaise du début du XXe siècle, va également vivre intensément les événements liés à la Grande Guerre avant de rejoindre Paris et sa prestigieuse université, la Sorbonne, tout en éprouvant les heurs et malheurs de la vie conjugale et de la maternité. Ce portrait de femme, raconté à la manière d’une passionnante enquête, contribue incontestablement à dissiper l’insupportable silence qui entoure ces pionnières oubliées.

Die Autorin stützt sich auf zahlreiche neu erschlossene Quellen. Mit ihrer Studie regt sie dazu an, über Migration und ihre Wirkungen neu nachzudenken und kommt zu einer im Grundsatz optimistische Prognose für Einwanderungsgesellschaften in Europa.

    Description: Premier ouvrage abordant les violences faites aux femmes dans le 9e art, À coups de cases et de bulles est à même de montrer la façon dont la bande dessinée franco-belge, les comics mais aussi les mangas traitent les agressions et les crimes de sang. La bande dessinée qui ne cesse d’ouvrir de nouveaux chantiers et de revisiter des domaines déjà balisés, soit en les renouvelant, soit en les inscrivant dans une tradition, continue d’investir l’imaginaire des sociétés contemporaines. Quotidiens, hebdomadaires, trimestriels font désormais une place de plus en plus importante aux cases et aux bulles, mais si les femmes de papier ont été parfois mises à l’honneur ou étudiées, c’est rarement le cas des brutalités, des insultes et des viols qu’elles subissent. Et pourtant, les récits graphiques regorgent de femmes victimes de violences les plus diverses : mariages forcés, humiliations, agressions physiques, viols. Des bandes dessinées relèvent du témoignage et de la littérature du réel, d’autres appartiennent au registre de l’imaginaire, mais toutes traitent d’un fléau universel, parfois en une seule case, d’autres fois en plusieurs planches. La visée du présent ouvrage est d’inverser les perspectives communes, de montrer que les femmes ne sont pas enfermées dans la catégorie des femmes aguicheuses, ni dans celle des faire-valoir, ni non plus dans celles des seules victimes. En effet, même humiliées, brutalisées, martyrisées, elles conservent leur dignité ou leur fierté.

Very rapidly, numerous Dijon residents initiated the first protest against the defeat, including a family of the Saint-Michel district known as the Grenier-Godards: Alphonse, a soldier during World War I, gassed on the eastern front in 1917; Blanche, a nurse who became involved in September 1939; and their two young sons, René, fifteen, and Jean, eleven. Blanche, who organised the network, instigated secret activities: prisoner escapes, false IDs, crossing the demarcation line, secret services, and helping Jews. The network counted more than 300 members in 1942. A woman, a family, a district. How and why did the French enter the Resistance in the summer of 1940? How did a secret organisation operate at the beginning of this movement? Why was the Grenier-Godard network forgotten after being honoured and rewarded? These are the questions this monograph addresses so that the Dijon network can be rescued from the oblivion of history.

Personnage de frêle apparence mais de grande séduction, vraie légende de la Russie des années 1970, il est ici présenté dans un contexte caractérisé, sur le plan politique, par la sortie du soviétisme et ses conséquences ; et sur le plan philosophique, par un retour aux sources hellénique et byzantine de la pensée russe. L’auteur fait appel aux témoignages des acteurs de la dissidence politico-culturelle qui, avec Averintsev, ont contribué aux changements de cette période : Lossev, Likhatchev, Mamardachvili, Galtsova, Gasparov, Sedakova. Il souligne combien Averintsev, renouant avec un vaste héritage qui va de l’hellénisme tardif à la poésie de l’Âge d’argent, pose des questions d’aujourd’hui : l’identité européenne et la transmission de l’héritage culturel ; la nécessité et les limites d’une politique conservatrice en réponse aux questions du temps ; l’évolution de la linguistique devenue une approche qui inscrit les sociétés dans une large perspective culturelle ; enfin le rôle de la pédagogie directe dans la transmission du savoir.

    Description: Dans l’entre-deux-guerres, Hong Kong est déjà une ville-monde, un emporium où transitent les marchandises venues de tous les continents, un port franc où commencent et s’achèvent les grandes lignes maritimes, une colonie britannique où s’entrechoquent les existences et, parmi celles-ci, des Françaises et des Français. À Hong Kong, la France est d’abord officiellement représentée par un consulat. Autour de cette sphère gravitent des acteurs aux statuts formels qui participent à l’essor des intérêts français. Maisons de négoce, compagnies maritimes, établissements bancaires ou encore congrégations religieuses ont des besoins similaires : se développer à partir d’un environnement stable, puis rayonner en Asie orientale. Ces groupes ne reflètent toutefois qu’une partie de la communauté française. Des présences marginales s’ajoutent, éphémères, interlopes, rebelles ou simplement jugées insignifiantes. Tous ces éléments sont liés. Leurs interactions tissent la trame d’une société hybride dont les perceptions diffèrent de celles de leurs compatriotes restés en métropole. Ce tableau de la France à Hong Kong interroge les nombreuses réalités de la notion de présences – celles-ci pouvant également être désincarnées, voire immatérielles – et questionne ce qui conduit des Français hors de leur empire. La colonie britannique est un observatoire privilégié pour étudier ces réseaux et les acteurs qui les animent.

    Description: Hippolyte Luc (1883-1946) est l’un des bâtisseurs de l’enseignement technique et professionnel français. Orphelin de l’Assistance publique devenu agrégé de philosophie puis haut fonctionnaire, sa trajectoire emblématique de la méritocratie républicaine est celle d’un « transclasse » pétri de doutes et d’ambivalences. Directeur général de l’enseignement technique de 1933 à 1944 dont il a théorisé le rôle dans le développement d’une économie moderne, Luc a puissamment contribué à développer le réseau d’écoles publiques de formation technique et professionnelle, à instituer les diplômes d’État comme critères de qualification et de rémunération des salariés, et il a été un des pionniers de l’orientation. Resté à son poste jusqu’en juillet 1944, authentiquement anti-nazi, Luc n’a pas collaboré avec les autorités allemandes, ni manifesté d’opinion antisémite, mais ne s’est pas davantage engagé dans une action résistante. Au prix d’une compromission avec un gouvernement dont les choix politiques étaient à l’opposé de ses convictions, il a obstinément poursuivi l’accomplissement de ce qu’il considérait comme l’œuvre de sa vie : bâtir un enseignement technique au service du peuple et du pays. En se plaçant au croisement de l’histoire intime et de l’histoire collective, ce livre apporte ainsi des éclairages inédits sur l’histoire scolaire, sociale et politique de la France contemporaine.

Vingt ans après sa promulgation et face à la crise toujours permanente des finances publiques, la LOLF a-t-elle atteint ses objectifs ? Comment a évolué le rôle du Parlement depuis 2001 ? La démarche de performance guide-t-elle vraiment l’action de l’État ? Comment ont évolué les principes budgétaires ? L’intégration des finances de l’État avec les autres secteurs des finances publiques a-t-elle connu des avancées ? De multiples questions se posent aujourd’hui quant à l’avenir de la LOLF et de ses perspectives de réformes. Le colloque organisé par l’Institut Fédératif de Recherche « Mutation des normes juridiques », l’Institut Maurice Hauriou et la Société Française de Finances publiques (avec le soutien de la Faculté de droit de Toulouse et de l’Institut Universitaire Champollion d’Albi) se propose de participer à cette vaste réflexion sur les institutions financières de la France.

Lentement façonnée par les siècles, la Sérénissime est le produit de l’histoire et le miroir le plus éloquent du passage du temps comme le prouve le curieux dialogue qui s’est peu à peu instauré entre la nature et les vieilles pierres de ses édifices. Comment les voyageurs ont-ils perçu, d’un siècle à l’autre, l’étroite connivence qui se manifeste à Venise entre la nature sauvage et le bâti harmonieux ? Tout en se démarquant de la domination qu’exercent les études littéraires dans le domaine du voyage à Venise, cette étude reconstitue donc les transformations du regard sur l’architecture et analyse le processus de « réévaluation » progressive de l’eau lagunaire, du voyage naturaliste de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, à l’apparition d’un tourisme balnéaire dans la Venise des Habsbourg.

Chastagnaret a directement abordés ou qu’il a su encourager : l’histoire des mines, des entreprises, des innovations, l’histoire de l’État et des élites de la fin du xviiie siècle au milieu du xxe siècle.     Description: Without Rosi Wolfstein and Paul Frölich, our image of Rosa Luxemburg would be completely different today. In the 1920s, the couple worked together on the estate of the murdered politician, which made it possible to produce the first edition of her works. Later, when Frölich and Wolfstein had fled from the National Socialists into exile in France, one of the earliest and at the same time most authentic biographies of Luxemburg (Rosa Luxemburg: Gedanke und Tat) was written by both of them in 1939 under Frölich's name, which was fed by this rich store of knowledge. But who were Rosi Wolfstein and Paul Frölich, who seem almost forgotten today? Their own political careers each started in the SPD before World War I, led them through the anti-war camp to the founding congress of the KPD (Communist Party). While Frölich was elected to the Reichstag, Wolfstein sat in the Prussian Landtag. Out of anti-Stalinist conviction, they left the KPD and eventually became co-founders of the SAP (Socialist Workers' Party), which they headed before fleeing. But they returned to Germany... Riccardo Altieri illustrates in a very readable way the result of his research of several years into a double biography from the point of view of network history. Only by consulting international sources from Wolfstein's and Frölich's network could the study come into being at all, since the protagonists had not left a closed estate due to the persecution during the Nazi era.

    Description: Pierre Uri (1911-1992), normalien, agrégé de philosophie et économiste, méritait que son parcours et sa contribution à la reconstruction de la France et à l’édification de l’Europe soient mieux connus. Collaborateur de François Perroux à la Libération, il rejoint Jean Monnet au Plan, où il dresse les premiers comptes de la Nation. Associé dès le début au Plan Schuman, il prend une large part à la négociation du traité de Paris puis dans sa mise en œuvre à la Ceca. Auteur du rapport Spaak, il joue un rôle décisif dans l’introduction du Marché commun à la conférence de Messine puis dans les négociations des traités de Rome qui instituent la CEE et l’Euratom. À partir de là, ses activités se multiplient : expert international, il est l’auteur de nombreux rapports pour la Commission européenne comme pour les Nations unies ; éditorialiste et essayiste, il a été aussi professeur à l’ENA, à l’université Paris Dauphine et membre du Conseil économique et social. Théoricien et homme d’action, soucieux d’égalité et de justice, Pierre Uri a été membre du Club Jean-Moulin puis du Parti socialiste. Après avoir conçu le programme fiscal de la CGT après la guerre, il a multiplié les projets pour réformer la fiscalité en France comme en Europe et inspiré de nombreux programmes politiques. Couvrant quatre décennies, l’action de ce fondateur de l’Europe est retracée dans ce volume où sont publiés les actes du colloque qui lui a été consacré en novembre 2021 à l’occasion du 110e anniversaire de sa naissance.

    Description: De 1879 à 1898, la Troisième République traverse une période mouvementée faite de crises, de tensions, de divisions du parti républicain et d’essor du nationalisme. Dans ce contexte, les républicains modérés se trouvent au cœur des événements qui permettent l’émergence et les premiers pas de la « République des républicains », contribuant à donner au régime certains de ses traits les plus marquants et les plus durables. Cependant, si les événements nationaux et les débats à l’Assemblée ou dans les grands quotidiens parisiens sont bien connus, l’évolution et les recompositions du courant républicain modéré en province demeurent peu étudiées. Dans ce département particulier qu’est celui des Alpes-Maritimes, cas original de modérantisme méridional, ce livre analyse les partis, les pratiques et les différentes structures politiques afin de montrer comment le républicanisme modéré se transforme, se recompose et parvient à surmonter ses difficultés et ses remises en cause, tout en demeurant attaché aux valeurs libérales de 1789. Au-delà d’un « modèle » unique et parfois fantasmé, le cas des Alpes-Maritimes montre ainsi la souplesse, la capacité d’adaptation et la diversité du régime républicain.

    Description: Aux sources d’une pensée démocratique et socialiste ou social-démocrate en Allemagne, longtemps occultée par le(s) marxisme(s) et par la pensée antilibérale et antidémocratique, voire crypto-nazie, ce texte intéressera ceux qui, au sujet du « couple franco-allemand » en Europe, souhaitent réfléchir au-delà des clichés sommairement pessimistes ou naïvement optimistes. Alors que l’échec des révolutions de 1848 est général, Arnold Ruge, hégélien de gauche et député au Parlement de Francfort, exprime l’espoir d’une « seconde révolution » plus radicale que la première, celle de mars 1848, et qui fonderait une république sociale et démocratique. La formule est du socialiste français Louis Blanc, avec qui Ruge, avant sa rupture avec Marx, fut en contact à Paris en 1843-1844. Opposé au despotisme ancien, au libéralisme bourgeois et au communisme et anticipant, en citant Proudhon, sur les projets autogestionnaires du xxe siècle, Ruge propose la suppression du salariat et un coopératisme généralisé avec maintien d’un État régulateur.

    Description: Issu d’un colloque international tenu à l’occasion du onzième centenaire du traité de Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, ce volume s’intéresse aux débuts du duché de Normandie et aux différents aspects de l’expansion ou de la présence des Normands dans les îles Britanniques et en Méditerranée. Il expose les interprétations données aux conquêtes, explore la formation de réseaux et la construction d’espaces, ainsi que les notions de diaspora et d’identité « normandes ». La pertinence de l’expression « monde(s) normand(s) » est discutée en soulignant son caractère à la fois singulier et pluriel, sa dimension européenne, sa valeur heuristique, capable de se dégager d’historiographies trop étroitement nationales et de remettre en question certains modèles explicatifs.
