    Description: Les affaires du corps s’opposent aux affaires de l’esprit, le côté aliments au côté croyance. Ce sont là des manières différentes d’exprimer un clivage fondamental de l’existence et de l’univers tels qu’ils sont perçus par les Rapas. Essentiellement, c’est la distinction entre le profane et le sacré. En d’autres termes, les Rapas incluent dans le « coté nourriture » pae ma’a ou dans le « côté corps » pae tino ces aspects de la vie que nous avons coutume d’appeler économiques, sociaux ou politiques. La religion et la morale appartiennent au « côté esprit », pae varua ou au « côté croyance », paea fa’aro’o. Ce livre traite du « côté corps » de l’existence à Rapa. J’ai cherché d’une part à décrire l’économie, la société et la vie politique telles qu’elles me sont apparues au cours d’un séjour d’une année en 1964. J’ai organisé ces données de manière à les rendre intelligibles aux lecteurs de chez nous ; cependant j’essaierai, dans la mesure du possible, de montrer en quoi les diverses coutumes, croyances et organisations qui composent le « côté nourriture » sont signifiantes pour les Rapas. En cela nous suivons les préceptes de Malinowski : « Notre objectif est de saisir le point de vue de l’indigène, sa relation avec la vie, de comprendre sa vision de son monde ». C’est Malinowski lui-même qui souligne.

    Description: Among the literature aimed at students of art science and other image-interpreting sciences are a number of texts that deal with theories and theoretical concepts. However, what is largely missing, and which students often call for, are texts in Swedish that show how theories and concepts can be applied in concrete interpretation situations. The series Theoretical applications in art science aims to fill that gap, with the book Materiality being the fourth in the series. The book introduces and activates a concept that in recent decades has come to take an increasingly important place in humanistic research. Art scholars - but also archaeologists, anthropologists, literary scholars, ethnologists and other humanistic researchers - are increasingly interested in the material conditions for, and the manifestations of, people's social and cultural life and exchange. But despite its topicality in today's scientific conversation, the concept of materiality can seem elusive and elusive. It moves all the way from the most tangible analyzes of the material components of a cultural artefact, to the somewhat impenetrable theorizations of objectivity, agents and networks that are usually sorted under the label ""new materialism"". However, the book Materialitet gives concrete examples of how the concept of materiality can open up interpretations of important layers of meaning in works of art and other cultural artifacts. After the initial introduction where different perspectives and conceptualisations of materiality are discussed, six researchers each do their own analysis based on their subject area. The chapters are based on new research and are written specifically for this book. The different chapters together show the multifaceted nature of the concept of materiality, but do not lock it down to a definition, but open the eyes to a number of different interpretive paths.

    Description: Herbes de cures alliées aux cycles saisonniers, feuilles amères, fleurs « qui font transpirer », « purges » non laxatives, salades ramassées dans les friches, qui nettoient des « crasses » de l'hiver, les dépuratifs ne séparent pas l'aliment du remède, s'adressent davantage à des « états du corps » qu'à des maladies précises. Mais où sont ici les limites de la médecine populaire ? Ne trouve-t-on pas aussi des dizaines de remèdes dépuratifs en pharmacie ? Archaïsme médical déjà combattu voici deux siècles, dès l'apparition du terme, le « dépuratif », entendu à la fois sur les modes botanique, historique et symbolique, suscite de multiples échos. Dans nos contrées, ne conserverait-il pas trace au cours des temps d'une rencontre particulière avec la plante-remède, d'une perception et d'un usage du monde où nos politiques de santé pourraient trouver à réfléchir ? Ce livre montre l'intérêt d'une analyse approfondie de cette « médecine populaire par les plantes », bien mal connue en dépit des célébrations actuelles. C'est à partir de sa passion de naturaliste que Pierre Lieutaghi en est venu aux savoirs traditionnels. Chemin du végétal vers l'homme, inhabituel pour les anthropologues mais qui lui a permis de retrouver le fil des profonds rapports entre les hommes, les plantes et le cosmos.

Des liens inédits unissent beaux-parents et beaux-enfants, demi et « quasi » frères et sœurs, dans une ordonnance différente des lieux et des temps de la vie familiale. Apparaissent de nouvelles manières de vivre et de penser les liens de famille, qui interrogent nos repères traditionnels. Que signifie être père ou mère, beau-père ou belle-mère dans les familles recomposées ? Est-ce donner la vie, donner son nom et ses biens, nourrir et élever un enfant et le chérir, l’adopter ? Que signifie être frère ou sœur ? Avoir eu les mêmes parents biologiques, avoir partagé son enfance dans un même lieu ? Des relations amoureuses et sexuelles entre « quasi » frères et sœurs sont-elles licites ? C’est à ces questions que tente de répondre ce livre à travers l’exploration ethnographique d’une trentaine d’histoires familiales, où le point de vue des « beaux-enfants », devenus adultes, constitue le principal éclairage. A partir de leurs récits, mis en perspective par le recours à l’histoire et à l’anthropologie, Agnès Martial met au jour l’incertitude des termes, des rôles et des statuts qui constituent la trame familiale recomposée dans notre société. En interrogeant les relations entre générations, souvent perturbées par la séparation du couple parental et la notion d’inceste telle qu’elle émerge des pratiques, des discours et du droit, son analyse des familles recomposées permet de mieux comprendre le contenu des relations de filiation, de germanité et d’alliance dans les sociétés occidentales contemporaines.

La biographie a été traduite en espagnol et en italien.

    Description: Le 4 août 1897, des ouvriers agricoles découvrent à La Alcudia, site de l’antique Ilici (Elche, au sud de la province d’Alicante), une sculpture ibérique datant du ve-ive siècle av. J.-C. et connue sous le nom de Dame d’Elche. Sa singularité et « l’étrangeté troublante de sa beauté » (Pierre Paris) attirent l’attention des archéologues européens. Très vite considérée comme le chef-d’œuvre de l’art ibérique, la statue devient une source d’inspiration pour les artistes et, sous la plume des idéologues régionalistes et nationalistes espagnols, une icône identitaire. Le but de cet ouvrage, écrit par un archéologue et une anthropologue, n’est pas seulement de dire ce qu’était la Dame dans l’Antiquité mais aussi et surtout ce qu’elle est devenue pour les hommes et les femmes de notre époque qui se sont interrogés sur elle, l’ont admirée, aimée et souvent réinventée.

En effet, cette catégorie patri­moniale, qui suscite des attentes et un engouement croissants parmi les acteurs sociaux et politiques à l’échelle planétaire, est à l’origine de vives controverses entre acteurs ins­titutionnels et scientifiques. Modelée sur une acception anthropologique de la culture, cette notion ne peut que retenir l’attention des ethnolo­gues, qu’ils choisissent de s’investir dans le chantier d’élaboration de ce patrimoine, ou d’observer à distance l’« effet Unesco » sur des objets tels que la samba de roda ou les fêtes de la Tarasque. Au cœur du débat anthropologique contemporain, l’institution du patrimoine immatériel est trop récente pour avoir déjà fait ses preuves. Mais les difficultés qu’elle pose, aux acteurs sociaux et aux institutions, en France comme à l’étranger, montrent que, loin de simplement élargir le champ patrimonial, elle implique des changements profonds. Les contributions ici réunies en analysent certaines des limites et des potentialités.

    Description: Cultural heritage is not just something from the past, but always also reflects contemporary needs and desires. In the Traces of the Cold War describes the making of a diverse and innovative Swedish military heritage. The book shows how memories and material remains from a period characterized by fear and geopolitical tensions are infused with new meanings when bunkers, decommissioned military facilities and technology are transformed into luxury housing, attractive tourist destinations and museum exhibitions. Through field-visits to military heritage sites across Sweden, the authors examine what material objects, narratives and emotions that today represent the Cold War. These examinations show how military structures and equipment from a time associated with threat and danger become captivating elements of the cultural heritage, while also communicating specific ideas regarding security and protection. In the Traces of the Cold War takes a novel approach to cultural heritage by relating collective memory-making to security policy. Based on theoretical perspectives from critical heritage studies (CHS) and feminist international relations (IR), the analysis focuses on constructions of national belonging and underlines the role of gender and sexuality in narrations of security and protection. In a democracy, the subject of military violence must always be a matter of ethical and political conversations. Setting out from this assumption, the authors critically discuss how Cold War heritagisation produces militarization as “natural” and necessary. The book invites reflection on how history is written as well as on what the requirements are for a safe and secure society. In the Traces of the Cold War presents the results from an interdisciplinary research project. The authors are all researchers at Stockholm University and have written the book together.

A genealogical reconstruction of Italian migration policies illustrates how the "integration regime" acts simultaneously as a selection management and as a border regime. Against the backdrop of an understanding of self-employment as a life concept, Pierdicca performs a biopolitical analysis of labor narratives and experiences of the protagonists in the field. Her research deals with approaches to affective labor critical of capitalism, considers the integration regime as a laboratory of neoliberal subjectivation, and thereby elaborates specific forms of labor exploitation.

In her travel diary, she writes how the shopkeepers displayed goods in myriad of ways that fooled people into shopping. How did shops look like in Anna Johanna Grill’s hometown Stockholm in the eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century? Were there distinctive shopping streets? Who sold goods, who shopped them and what goods were available? How were goods displayed in shops and marketed? How households act in organising their purchases and consumption? From a microhistorical case studies, this richly illustrated anthology widens the perspective to social, economic and cultural practices in everyday urban life. The chapters demonstrate how shopping streets and shops with their range of silk fabrics, accessories, fashion plates, blacksmithing, wigs and hair pomades not only met the desires of consumers, but also enabled dreams of novel identities and social accession for themselves and their families.

    Description: L’Inde est le pays le plus richement doté d’une tradition orale toujours vivace et trop longtemps masquée par l’aura des épopées prestigieuses du Rāmāyana et du Mahābhārata. Les textes et la fonction de cette tradition font désormais l’objet d’un champ de recherche situé au carrefour de l’ethnologie, de l’histoire et de la littérature. Au moment où la recrudescence des nationalismes et des régionalismes, dans le sous-continent indien comme dans le reste du monde, se décèle, le recours aux répertoires traditionnels vient à jouer un rôle déterminant — tout à la fois cause et effet — dans l’histoire de ces mouvements. L’importance réactualisée des traditions orales dans le sous-continent indien apparaît dans ce volume, où les auteurs, tout en privilégiant la notion de « circulation des textes », notamment à travers le réseau des interprètes itinérants, cherchent à faire émerger les formes urbaines de sociabilité dans lesquelles l’oralité est impliquée. Deux séries de questions se croisent ici. L’une a trait au devenir et à la transformation des répertoires ; l’autre aux modalités d’exploitation des matériaux collectés : — De quelle façon les répertoires traditionnels hérités des périodes classiques et médiévales se transmettent-ils dans la configuration de modernisation et d’urbanisation croissante de l’Asie contemporaine ? — De quel statut l’oralité et ses agents de transmission bénéficient-ils, dans le contexte du développement d’une imprimerie à bon marché, du règne de la chanson de film et du succès commercial des cassettes ? — Dans quelle mesure le pouvoir de la tradition orale sert-il l’affirmation d’une culture panindienne ou bien la quête d’une identité régionale ? — L’oralité, ses rituels, ses jeux langagiers ne sont-ils que miroir de l’imaginaire collectif d’une société hiérarchisée, ou permettent-ils d’exprimer un registre d’émotions plus secret et plus individualisé ?

Realistic utopias, tensions and everyday experiences, 24 researchers explore how resistance to various forms of racism is pursued and embodied among groups of people who dream beyond racism in a variety of ways, often contradictory, rarely successful, but always stubborn and forward-looking. The anthology illustrates the breadth of anti-racism, but also analyses its problems and weaknesses. Inspired by anti-, post- and decolonial traditions, among others, together with social movement perspectives, the anthology challenges a static and essentialising approach found in research and policy that tends to emphasise the stability and immutability of inequality, even in the case of racism. In addition to a variety of concrete analyses and descriptions of historical and contemporary activism, the various authors also show the possibilities of anti-racism and can thus provide some hope, in these dark times, for those who want a society without racism.     Description: Wenn wir Alltag als die immer schon gegebene Weise des In-der-Welt-Seins verstehen, stellt sich bildungs-, kulturtheoretisch und didaktisch die Frage, wie das Subjekt Zugang zu anderen Dimensionen von Selbst und Welt finden kann. Alltag ist schließlich gerade dadurch gekennzeichnet, Lernprozesse zu vermeiden und sich auf Bildungsprozesse nicht einzulassen. Mit der Philosophie der symbolischen Formen Cassirers können die Eigenarten anderer Modi des In-der-Welt-Seins (Kunst, Wissenschaft, Religion, ggf. Spiel) herausgearbeitet werden. Erst in diesen "symbolischen Formen" werden die Bildungsprozesse möglich, wie sie die transformatorische Bildungstheorie beschreibt. Aus verschiedenen klassischen subjektphilosophischen Analysen (Kant, Hegel, Husserl) lässt sich die These ableiten, dass Bildungsprozesse nicht nur auf symbolische Formung angewiesen, sondern zudem auf der Ebene des Selbstbewusstseins zu verorten sind, d.h. nicht schon auf der Wahrnehmungs- oder Verstandesebene. Eine Pädagogik, die sich der daraus erwachsenden Herausforderungen entledigt, indem sie auf eine immer schon vorauszusetzende Alltäglichkeit setzt, zieht daher die Diagnose von Banalisierung auf sich.

    Description: Cet ouvrage posthume de Bernard Juillerat élève le mythe au rang d’« “objet transitionnel” entre l’inconscient individuel et la société » et permet de repenser encore une fois des questions dont l’intérêt excède évidemment le domaine mélanésien, notamment la sexualité, la procréation, la parentalité, la filiation, l’émergence du social ou la mort. À partir de l’analyse comparative d’un corpus de mythes mélanésiens, essentiellement néo-guinéens, Bernard Juillerat en dégage la logique sémantique globale, en repérant les thèmes disséminés à travers les récits de multiples sociétés qui prennent sens comme autant d’éléments de configurations inconscientes universelles. La transmission orale des mythes, qui véhicule ce sens, contribue surtout à le produire à travers les transformations que leur répétition induit inévitablement au cours du temps. Ainsi, comme il l’écrit, le « sens n’est pas préétabli avant même que le mythe n’existe socialement : il se constitue dans une poussée de la pensée qui, par la médiation du récit, passe dans la parole et devient un bien culturel transmissible ». Au cœur des mythes réside la question des conflits permanents entre la jouissance individuelle et la construction du social qui travaille à sa domestication, le mythe parlant des « concessions que le sujet doit concéder au social pour maîtriser sa part “naturelle” ». Ainsi la pensée mythique fait-elle resurgir ce que la société a refoulé comme non socialisable. Dans la première partie, l’auteur traite des héros phalliques, personnalités solitaires, narcissiques et pulsionnelles qui défient l’ordre social et auxquelles appartiennent notamment les figures répandues des changeurs de peau. La deuxième partie porte sur les héros œdipiens, personnages disposant d’un accès privilégié à l’abondance – qu’elle se dise en termes de richesses matérielles ou de femmes. Ces types de héros vécurent sous le règne du principe de plaisir avant qu’une transgression individuelle n’y mette fin en provoquant l’apparition du principe de réalité qui régit désormais la vie de la société. La troisième et dernière partie concerne l’intrication mythique des thèmes de l’amour, de la mort et de l’abondance. L’analyse se termine sur l’observation qu’une structure ternaire apparaît commune à la presque totalité des récits. Écrit de façon claire et avec la sobriété qui était coutumière à l’auteur, ce livre offre un large panorama de mythes dans lesquels les ethnologues de la Nouvelle-Guinée en particulier retrouveront des échos familiers des récits qu’ils connaissent. L’interprétation qu’en livre Bernard Juillerat ici entend mettre en évidence les récurrences thématiques qui se font jour entre eux, sans chercher à les contextualiser de façon spécifique. Il n’est donc fait référence, par exemple, ni aux rites susceptibles d’être associés à ces mythes et de les éclairer, ni aux modalités sociales de leur énonciation.

    Description: The monograph Shranli smo jih v bančah ('We saved them in chests') aims to present Slovenian clothing terminology in the Canale Valley (Slo. Kanalska dolina). It is the result of research conducted in cooperation with the Planika Kanalska dolina Slovenian cultural centre between 2003–2007 and in 2014. It has been formatted as a trilingual (English-German-Italian) concordance dictionary in which the most common collocations are presented alongside clothing terminology. The dictionary includes 657 entries and is based on approximately 1,400 audio extracts from around 16 hours of recording of guided conversations with five informants from Valbruna (Slo. Ovčja vas), Camporosso (Slo. Žabnice) and Uggoviza (Slo. Ukve). The dictionary’s introduction, containing a presentation of the research conducted, the structure of the dictionary entries and a list of abbreviations and acronyms, is accompanied by a transcription of the dialect text Oblačila naših dedkov in babic (Our grandparents’ clothing) by the main informant, Maria Moschitz, together with some photographic material. To make searching through the dictionary easier for users with expertise in several or other languages as well, we have provided lists of entries in which dialect words can be searched against Standard Slovenian, Italian and German, as well as reverse index.
    Description: Izsledki raziskave slovenskega oblačilnega izrazja v Kanalski dolini, ki je v sodelovanju s Slovenskim kulturnim središčem Planika Kanalska dolina potekala v letih 2003–2007, so v monografiji urejeni v trijezični (slovensko-italijansko-nemški) konkordančni izrazijski slovar. Začetna, slovensko-italijanska razdelka vsebujeta prepis narečnega besedila Oblačila naših dedkov in babic glavne informantke Marie Moschitz, obogaten s slikovnim gradivom, in slovarski uvod s predstavitvijo raziskave, prikazom sestave gesel ter seznamom kratic in krajšav. Slovar v celoti temelji na prepisih posnetkov narečnih besedil, urejenih v podatkovno zbirko. Lažje iskanje po slovarju (tudi več- in drugojezičnim uporabnikom) omogočajo knjižnoslovensko-narečni, italijansko-slovenskonarečni in nemško-slovenskonarečni seznam.

    Description: Le soulèvement de 2001 en Kabylie (Algérie) et son traitement politico-médiatique ont amené à interroger la réalité de la tribu (arch) aujourd’hui. Cet ouvrage croisant histoire et ethnologie propose d’abord une réflexion épistémologique sur le concept anthropologique de « tribu » afin de le confronter aux réalités tribales, diverses, du domaine berbère et de caractériser la tribu en Kabylie. Il montre que des référents tribaux participent des catégories classificatoires y fondant les représentations de soi. Le cas d’une tribu révèle le maintien d’un espace tribal vécu et représenté, l’adaptation des institutions anciennes à divers ordres politiques et le foisonnement d’initiatives qui multiplient les acceptions du terme arch. Cela traduit la construction de nouveaux modes de mobilisation qui s’inscrivent dans un processus d’affirmation identitaire désormais séculaire et aboutit, depuis les années 1990, à un travail de reconstruction identitaire à l’échelle locale touchant des objets culturels variés, la mémoire et la langue.

Konrad Celtis, Paul Schede Melissus, Johann Christian Günther), die in ihren medizinhistorischen, theologischen und / oder frömmigkeitsgeschichtlichen Kontexten verortet werden (Syphilis- und Fieberkunde, Medizinaltheologie und Sterbekunst). Was diese Texte verbindet, so die leitende These der Studie, ist ihre konzeptuelle Nähe zum Paradigma der Selbstsorge (cura sui, epimeleia heautou), wie es zunächst von Pierre Hadot, später von Michel Foucault für die antike Popularphilosophie beschrieben wurde. Die Examination des Körpers, die theologisch informierte Reflexion über den pathologischen Zustand, aber auch die Bereitung zum Sterben beschreiben einige der Praktiken, für die die Krankheitslyrik ein ästhetisches Gefäß im Dienst der Selbstsorge bereitstellt.     Description: Wie kann den Protagonisten des höfischen Romans um 1200 eine Vervollkommnung höfischen Lebens gelingen, die tätiges Streben nach êre mit der Wahrnehmung von Erfülltheit in idyllischen Freiräumen vereinbart? Rebekka Becker betrachtet dieses Spannungsverhältnis, indem sie Analogien zwischen literarischen Inszenierungen temporärer Ausbrüche aus der institutionellen Ordnung und einer modernen Phänomenologie der Muße aufzeigt. Dieser Blick ist nicht selbstverständlich, da Muße im höfischen Roman bislang vor allem als gesellige kurzwîle konzeptionalisiert wurde. Gerade in Abgrenzung zu Formen höfischer Vergnügungskultur zeichnet die Autorin eine Topographie von Muße nach, in der sich das spezifische Zusammenspiel von Muße, Minne und Naturraum offenbart. Ihre Studie schließt die Poetologie der Texte mit ein und ist damit auch für das Untersuchungsfeld von Muße und Lektüre relevant.

    Description: Malgré la parution ininterrompue de livres, d’articles et d’études sur Tahiti depuis sa découverte – pour la bibliographie qu’il prépare, le Père O’Reilly compte déjà plus de 10 000 fiches – les ouvrages dignes de foi qui nous donnent une description exacte et détaillée de l’ancienne société tahitienne sont très peu nombreux. Les récits de Banks, Cook et Commerson et les rapports des divers membres des trois expéditions espagnoles entre 1772 et 1776 nous fournissent bien sûr des renseignements souvent très précis sur les vêtements, les armes, les outils, les habitations et sur d’autres aspects limités de la culture matérielle des Tahitiens. Cependant les préjugés et l’optique européenne de ces trois chroniqueurs les rendaient souvent incapables, malgré leur bonne volonté, de bien comprendre les coutumes tahitiennes. Ce qui nous manque surtout ce sont des descriptions de leurs propres cultures et histoire faites, sans intermédiaire, par des savants et historiens tahitiens, sur le modèle, par exemple, des Hawaiian Antiquities de Malo. Même les petits atolls des Tuamotu ont été mieux servis puisqu’il existe parmi les nombreux documents recueillis par les ethnologues du Bishop Muséum dans cet archipel, entre 1929 et 1934, au moins une douzaine de manuscrits de ce genre. Il se peut qu’à Tahiti aussi des individus aux ambitions littéraires aient entrepris la même tâche, après avoir appris à écrire au début du siècle dernier. Mais, quoi qu’il en soit, il n’a été préservé jusqu’à nos jours qu’une seule oeuvre d’un auteur tahitien, à savoir les Mémoires d’Arii Taimai, présentée ici ; encore n’a-t-elle malheureusement pas tout à fait la même authenticité et originalité que les écrits comparables des autres archipels polynésiens. Ceci n’empêche pas ces Mémoires – qui contiennent principalement des légendes, des chants et des généalogies des tribus des Teva – d’être, pour tous ceux qui s’intéressent à l’histoire et à l’ethnologie tahitiennes, une source d’une valeur inestimable.

    Description: Sur le terrain, le bon ethnographe s'attache à ce qui empêche ses interlocuteurs de dormir tranquilles, à ce qui les passionne, les fait débattre à l'infini, les met en joie ou en larmes, les émeut… En France et en Europe, il y a à peine un demi-siècle que le patrimoine fait pleinement partie de ces causes pour lesquelles individus et collectifs se mettent en mouvement. Le présent ouvrage analyse cette révolution discrète mais profonde. Il la saisit dans la diversité concrète des mobilisations. Les unes sobres, les autres expansives. Certaines canalisées par le savoir-faire administratif, quelques-unes débordant tous les cadres et s'épanchant en résistance inattendue, spectaculaire, radicale. Une question anthropologique court dans cette enquête : comment est-on sorti du « temps des monuments », au cours duquel ces derniers incarnaient de façon très persuasive la patrie, grande ou petite, pour entrer dans le « temps du patrimoine » où se forge un tout autre rapport sensible au passé et où s’inventent des engagements inédits ? Ce nouveau régime patrimonial, plus ou moins promu à l’échelle du monde, se heurte un peu partout à des réactions politiques puissantes que la comparaison ethnologique nous aide à identifier.

    Description: In this volume of studies, Animal: Moments of Affect, Moments of Pain, eight ethnologists apply a cultural perspective to people’s varied and complex relationships with other species. The contributions focus on wild animals, that is, those that are rarely found in the authors’ immediate vicinity. Based on ongoing research, the articles discuss themes such as conflicts and joys in the birdwatching world, charismatic animals in various exhibition contexts, children’s fears, morbid animal jokes and the ritual transformation of living animals into edible meat. The texts range from the tender, comical and cute to death and existential vulnerability. The book begins with the editors presenting an overview of how animals have been produced, noticed and studied in a mostly Nordic humanistic research context. Then the articles follow. Based on the idea of affective logic, Elin Lundquist follows the on-site monitoring of the bird hunting that takes place annually in Malta. Mattias Frihammar uses observations at a wilderness gallery with taxidermied animals to reflect on local identity. Lars Kaijser examines the ambivalent and conflicted portrayal of sharks in public aquariums. Sverker Hyltén-Cavallius writes about the death of extinct animals and how this is displayed in natural history museums. Susanne Nylund Skog examines birdwatchers’ stories as an expression of collecting and as a way of manifesting status. With lobster cartoons as a starting point, Simon Ekström shows how these depict both animal rights issues and human anxiety. Helena Hörnfeldt investigates animal fear and the diffuse boundary between humans and animals. Proceeding from different depictions of slaughter and the preparation of meat, Michelle Zethson problematizes how some animals are made edible. The volume ends with an epilogue by the editors commenting on the findings.
